Christopher Carduff, 'Wall Street Journal' Books Editor, Dies at 66

Christopher Carduff, books editor at the Wall Street Journal and former contributing editor at Library of America, died on August 14 at New York University Hospital following complications related to a sudden brain bleed and blood clot. He was 66.

Carduff graduated from Macalester College in 1979 and, after many years in bookselling, he attended the Radcliffe (now Columbia) Publishing Course. His publishing career included jobs at Addison-Wesley Publishers, the New Criterion magazine, Houghton Mifflin, Counterpoint Press, and David R. Godine Publishers.

From 2006 to 2017, he was an editor and publishing consultant at the Library of America, overseeing the publication of American classics. He conceived and supervised multivolume editions of the collected works of many writers, including Jane Bowles, Shirley Jackson, Carson McCullers, Katherine Anne Porter, Virgil Thomson, Kurt Vonnegut, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Carduff expanded the scope of the Library of America series by embracing graphic novels and children's literature. A lifelong sports fan, he also developed projects outside the core LOA series, among them String Theory: David Foster Wallace on Tennis , American Pastimes: The Very Best of Red Smith , and Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu: John Updike on Ted Williams .

In 2017, he was named books editor at the Wall Street Journal .

An expert on the work of John Updike, he was a trustee for the John H. Updike Literary Trust. As the publishing consultant to the Trust, he edited Updike's Higher Gossip , Always Looking , Collected Stories, and Selected Poems, as well as multiple collections of Updike’s novels. He also recently oversaw a forthcoming collection of his letters.

In addition to Updike, Chris was the estate-appointed editor of posthumous works by Maeve Brennan, Penelope Fitzgerald, Daniel Fuchs, and William Maxwell.

He lived in New York City with his wife, the cookbook editor Elizabeth Skinner Carduff, and was the father of Emily Van Brunt Carduff and Eliot Skinner Carduff.

Wall Street Journal Names Christopher Carduff Books Editor

May 8, 2017 (NEW YORK, NY) The Wall Street Journal announced today the hiring of Christopher Carduff as Books Editor. He will be responsible for the daily book reviews as well as the collection of reviews in the weekend Review section.

Chris brings to the Journal a wealth of experience as a distinguished editor in book and magazine publishing. Since 2006 he has been an editor and publishing consultant at the Library of America, where he has conceived and overseen multi-volume editions of the collected workers of classic writers including Carson McCullers, Katherine Anne Porter, Virgil Thomson, Kurt Vonnegut and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

He is the estate-appointed editor of posthumous works by Maeve Brennan, Penelope Fitzgerald, Daniel Fuchs, Willam Maxwell, and, most notably, John Updike. As the publishing consultant to the Updike literary trust, he has edited Updike’s Higher Gossip, Always Looking, Collected Stories and Selected Poems, and is currently overseeing the Library of American edition of his novels and a forthcoming collection of his letters.

Wall Street Journal launching book review section

The Wall Street Journal is set to launch a weekly book review section this month, even as newspapers across the country cut back on book coverage.

The pullout section is part of an expanded Saturday edition set to appear in the next couple of weeks. The newspaper’s daily book review, called Bookshelf, will continue unchanged.

Under Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp. bought the Journal in 2007, the newspaper has been expanding beyond financial news to compete head on with general-interest newspapers, especially its main rival, The New York Times.

The new book section comes as other newspapers have been dropping or scaling back literary criticism. The Washington Post eliminated regular publication of its weekly Book World section last year, moving book reviews to its Style and Outlook sections. The Los Angeles Times folded its book section into the newspaper’s opinion pages in 2007.

The expansion also comes as other media companies are paring their print editions and focusing more of their attention on the Web. Murdoch, a self-described “romantic” about printed newspapers, added a metro section earlier this year to compete with The New York Times.

The Times still publishes a book review section that runs more than 20 pages on Sundays. The Journal would not disclose the number of pages it plans to devote.

The new section, which was reported earlier by The New York Observer, will be led by Robert Messenger. He was an editor at the now-defunct New York Sun, from which the Journal has drawn a number of its cultural reporters and editors.

The rest of the Journal’s expanded weekend edition, including the glossy WSJ. magazine and a new lifestyle section in the newspaper, will be led by Deborah Needleman. She was the founding editor of Conde Nast’s Domino, a home decor magazine that folded last year.

2 Top Editors to Depart Wall Street Journal

The changes are the latest under the news organization’s new editor in chief, Emma Tucker.

Two of The Wall Street Journal’s top editors will leave the publication, its new editor in chief, Emma Tucker, said on Thursday.

In an email to the staff, Ms. Tucker said Neal Lipschutz and Jason Anders, both deputy editors in chief, would depart “after many years of distinguished service.”

“A new deputy editor will be announced in due course,” Ms. Tucker wrote.

Mr. Lipschutz, who has spent 41 years at Dow Jones and The Journal, said in an email to his colleagues on Thursday that “the time has come for me to move on to new things.” He was previously a top editor for the Dow Jones newswires and had been a deputy editor in chief since 2019.

Mr. Anders has worked at The Journal for more than 25 years and was one of the organization’s first digital reporters. He was promoted to deputy editor in chief in 2022. He wrote in an email to colleagues on Thursday that he was at home with Covid, but “I’ll look forward to saying farewell in person over the next couple of weeks.”

Their departures are the latest in a string of changes since Ms. Tucker took over the newsroom in February.

Days after she started, Ms. Tucker let go of Karen Pensiero, the managing editor. She was replaced with Liz Harris, an editor who previously worked with Ms. Tucker at The Sunday Times in London.

Last week, Ms. Tucker announced that the news organization would no longer use honorifics, the courtesy titles like Mr. and Ms.

“The flood of Mr., Ms., Mx. or Mrs. in sentences can slow down readers’ enjoyment of our writing,” she wrote.

Ms. Tucker has also ended the use of corporate designations, such as Inc. or Corp., in news articles.

Ms. Tucker is the first woman to run The Journal’s newsroom. She has worked for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp since 2007, and became the editor of The Sunday Times, a sister paper to The Times of London, in 2020.

Several weeks after she took over at The Journal, Russia arrested Evan Gershkovich , one of the organization’s foreign correspondents, and charged him with espionage. Ms. Tucker has vehemently denied the accusation and pushed for his release, as has the U.S. government.

According to a new report, German media company Axel Springer is considering an acquisition of The Wall Street Journal, expanding its already significant presence in the United States. The company currently owns Insider, Politico, and other media assets.

Axel Springer recently opened a new headquarters in the United States, which could be a sign of its growing ambitions in the country. A 2023 Economist report also pointed to the media company looking to increase its presence in the United States.

The company could also be looking to spin off assets in Europe, moves that would come as it boosts its U.S. presence, and also to bring a return on investment to KKR & Co (NYSE:KKR), which is the largest shareholder in the company.

Döpfner is also a key owner of around 22% of the company.

Reports of a larger U.S. presence comes as one of the company's key American assets (Insider) is in conflict with leading American investor Bill Ackman.

According to the report, Döpfner pushed to fire Nicholas Carlson , a Business Insider editor, over his coverage of Ackman's wife Neri Oxman .

The report indicates that while Axel Springer has publicly defended its coverage of Ackman's wife, private discussions indicate the company is considering some of Ackman's demands. The conversation centers on whether meeting Ackman’s conditions could circumvent a costly legal battle, with Ackman represented by the defamation law firm Clare Locke.

As the company pursues acquisitions in the U.S., the Ackman issue has the potential to divert significant time and financial resources, potentially impeding the company’s growth in America until the case is resolved.

Why It's Important: The report on Axel Springer also hits on the company's relationship with people close to former President Donald Trump in years past.

Axel Springer worked to maintain a relationship with the Trump administration during his time in the White House.

The media company prides itself in trying to be neutral in politics coverage. A 2022 Washington Post story that showed leaked emails in which Döpfner appeared to express support for the re-election of Trump, seemingly contradicting this stance. Döpfner later said he was being sarcastic.

"All media executives, including Mathias, take meetings and have professional relationships with business leaders, political figures and government officials who hold a wide array of political views – it's part of the job," an Axel Springer spokesperson told Semafor.

Axel Springer also has had a strong relationship with Richard Grenell in the past. Grenell is the former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and considered a potential Secretary of State candidate if Trump is re-elected.

With its past relationships with the Trump administration and potential expansion through further U.S. media acquisitions, Axel Springer may increasingly influence the landscape of American political coverage.
