Travel Grants
Amanda Jones Field Study Abroad Award
In honor alumna, Amanda (Mandy) Jones, the Department of Anthropology is pleased to invite applications for the Amanda Jones Field Study Abroad Award. Amanda was an anthropology major with a keen interest in applied work. Her desire was to learn about other cultures by working in conjunction with communities to build sustainable futures. She participated in a field program for applied anthropology in Peru and found the experience to be one of the best of her undergraduate career, one that took her beyond the borders of the United States and brought to life her anthropology training. The Amanda Jones Award will provide $5,000, subject to tax withholding, to defer costs of an international field school or program in applied anthropology.
To be eligible for the award, you must:
- have completed 15 credits of an anthropology major at Colorado State University,
- identified an international field school or academic program that features applied anthropology,
- and complete a one-page essay describing the chosen program of study, your interest in the specific locale of the program, how the completion of the program will further your career goals, and how you expect to be affected by participation in such work.
Applications are due March 31 by 11:59 p.m. MST. A committee appointed by the Department of Anthropology Chair shall select the recipient(s). Applicants will be informed of the selection by April 15.
Graduate School Travel Award
Graduate Student Council and the Graduate School are offering Travel Awards for graduate students. These awards provide partial funding for conference travel-related expenses. Recipients of each award will be determined by evaluating the type of presentation, the type of conference, service the student provides to the university and community, and what the recipient hopes to gain from the attending the conference.
Please visit the Travel Award page for eligibility and requirements. Applications must be submitted electronically through the following page:
Graduate School Research Award
The Student Research fund is for graduate students to travel, nationally or internationally, for field research. Smaller sums of money will be awarded for local and regional research. Students may apply for travel funds one time per fiscal year (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019) but may reapply each fiscal year during their graduate career.
- be currently enrollment in the CSU Anthropology Master of Arts graduate program ,
- conduct research between March 1 and December 31 of application year,

Anthropology Major
Are you fascinated by the diversity of the human experience and its effect on modern science and society?
At a glance
The Anthropology major will prepare you to analyze and interpret the human condition. You will learn about the diversity of humanity from a broad, holistic perspective, or specialize in a particular subfield. You’ll come out with skills that can apply to nearly any career path, including writing, critical thinking, and understanding how theory, methods, and data intersect. Additionally, you’ll have chances to attend CSU’s summer field schools, where you’ll do archaeological digs and fossil prospecting alongside researchers and professors.
Concentrations
A concentration allows you to specialize in a certain area within your major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences that you may not otherwise get. Many students in this major will concentrate in one area to work in a specific field after college, as well as find mentors and internships before they even graduate.
Archaeology
You’ll focus on culture and humanity throughout the Americas, including prehistoric and historic archaeology.
Biological Anthropology
You’ll interact with both the physical and natural sciences, including biology, anatomy, genetics, chemistry, biometry, or endocrinology as well as the social sciences.
Cultural Anthropology
You’ll focus on contemporary experiences of culturally distinct communities encountering a rapidly globalizing political economy.
Some Career Options
Anthropology provides you with a broad academic background suitable for a variety of jobs in the public and private sectors. You’ll be trained to think independently and critically, communicate effectively, and function in a multicultural world , while focusing on the human condition throughout history . Careers for graduates are available in international development, health care, education, business, natural resource management, and government.

Anthropology focuses on the evolution of the human condition and provides a cross-cultural view of humanity. The description and explanation of human activities in other societies and during different periods of time provides a sense of perspective for individuals operating within their own culture. A minor may be focused on one or more of the sub-disciplinary divisions such as biology, archaeology, cultural anthropology, or applied anthropology. The minor may also be distributed across the fields, similar to the requirements of the major.
To declare this minor, please visit Clark B 218.
Effective Fall 2001
Students must satisfactorily complete the total credits required for the minor. Minors and interdisciplinary minors require 12 or more upper-division (300- to 400-level) credits.
Additional coursework may be required due to prerequisites.

Graduate students Yuti Gao, Kelsey Hoppes, Patrick McKenzie, and Nicholas Puente and receive Beverly Sears Graduate Student Grant Program Awards. They will use the funding to continue their ongoing doctoral dissertation research and writing (see below for their topics).
Yuti Gao (Biological Anthropology, PhD in progress) - Yuti's research is on the nonhuman primate oral microbiome. The funding will help her finalize lab work for her dissertation's pilot study.
Kelsey Hoppes (Archaeology, PhD Candidate) - Kelsey's research is on identifying processes of coalescing of diverse groups and ethnogenesis of past GreatPlains and Midwest communities in North America.
Patrick McKenzie (Cultural Anthropology, PhD Candidate) - Patrick’s research focuses on how nested forms of marginalization manifest in two Bulgarian state institutions ostensibly dedicated to care: the public hospital and the refugee camp.
Nicholas Puente (Archaeology, PhD Candidate)- Nicholas’s research explores how ancient Maya peoples engaged with subterranean caves during a period of frequent droughts. Caves are doorways to the underworld realm of ancestors and deities who can be petitioned for rain during times of stress. The funds will support fieldwork at the archaeological site of Punta Laguna, where two caves will be mapped and surface artifacts.
