Task 2 Essay: Music and Relationships

ielts writing task 2 essay on music

Question: Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) It is believed by some people that music has an ability to bring people closer regardless of their cultures and ages. While I agree that music can connect people from different countries/backgrounds, it fails to bring people from different generations together.

(Body 1) On the one hand, it is justifiable to say that music can remove the geographical barriers between people. As songs are the combination of lyrics and melody, people can still enjoy the songs without fully understanding the message that the song conveys when they are exposed to that/the music. Take concerts as an example. It is not uncommon to see thousands of young millennials from a diverse range of countries to gather together at a gigantic stadium to enjoy a performance by chart-topping singers, such as Taylor Swift or Adele. In these cases, the power of music to connect people f is undeniable.

(Body 2) However, it seems to me that it is impossible for music to bridge generational differences. The reason for this is that people’s choice of music is based on their life experience and personality, which deeply differ when people enter different stages of life. While children are interested in songs with catchy tunes and animated visuals, senior citizens prefer songs which can arouse melancholy feelings and trigger memories of the past. When the taste in music of the young and the old is not in harmony, it is difficult to bring them together to enjoy the same songs together, but not impossible as some limited common ground can be achieved, for example songs sung at Christmas, or traditional songs updated by current pop stars

(Conclusion) In conclusion, despite the fact that people from different cultures can become closer thanks to music, I am of the opinion that music cannot connect people of different ages because of the stark differences in their music tastes. Given this situation, the kind of music played for a diverse age range should be carefully chosen to catch people’s interest and avoid potential offence. (332 words).

Ielts writing task 2 – why is music important.

People listen to music for different reasons and at different times. Why is music important to many people? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.

( 276 Words , 19 Sentences, 5 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Music plays an essential role in our everyday life. We listen to music every day and even sometimes do not realize it. There are many resources where we can listen to music. We listen to the radio while driving our cars. We turn on the TV and watch movies where music influences our mind and makes people’s tremble at the fear. For several reasons, which I will mention bellow, I believe that music is important to humankind.

First of all, music is one of the best way to relax after stressful day. Many people prefer to listen to music in the evenings. For example, my cousin likes to listen to the classic music. He has a great collection of CD disks with many famous musical compositions. In old days people gathered around a fireplace and played and listened to music.

Second of all, music often helps people to cheer up. Personally, when something is bothering me I prefer to turn on my radio and listen to some of my favorite songs. It helps me to feel better about everything, leave my troubles behind and enjoy my life. I am sure that many people will agree with me on this issue.

Finally, music plays an essential role in different ceremonies. For example, I think it is rather difficult to imagine a wedding without solemn music or the Olympic Games without anthems.

In conclusion, I think that music is the unique language, which is understood by everyone all over the planet. Music is a great way of communication and people all over the world listen to the music of other nations and understand what an author wanted to tell by it.

( NB: Follow the above writing structure for getting higher IELTS band score in the examination. This sample answer can be an example of good writing out of many possible approaches.)

IELTS Music Essay: A Complex Essay Question

In this lesson we’ll look at an  IELTS music essay  in order to explain how to approach a more complex IELTS task 2 question.

Many questions have a clear  task . For example, the task may clearly state that you need to agree or disagree, offer solutions to a problem, or give the reasons why a problem exists.

Some though may have more general questions. Take a look at the example below:

There are many types of music in the world today.

Why do we need music?

Is the traditional music of a country more important and should it be preserved or is international music that is heard everywhere nowadays more useful to a society?

This is quite complex - the IELTS music essay question is long and ‘music’ is quite an abstract topic.

Understanding the Question

When you get a more complex IELTS task 2 question like this you should make sure you underline important words and carefully break it down into its different parts.

This will make sure that you do not miss something when you answer the question.

When you have done this, you should hopefully end up with something like this:

  • Why is traditional music important?
  • Should it be preserved?
  • Why is international music important?
  • Which is the most important?

You need to discuss all these things as they are all within the IELTS music essay question. If you address all of these points then you will be fully answering the question .

These kinds of question are usually asking your opinion in some way, and this question is no exception.

All of the points listed are asking for your opinion, but most importantly you MUST make it clear which type of music, traditional or international, you think is more important/useful (if indeed you do think one is more important than the other - you may think they are equally important).

Planning and Organizing your Answer

You can use these questions to brainstorm and plan your answer.

With a question like this there is no ‘fixed’ way to organize it. There could be many different ways. But you must ensure that, as always, it is logical and covers everything .

One clear way would be to discuss why we need music first, then go on to discuss/compare the relative importance of traditional and international music, ensuring that you finish by stating your opinion (or re stating your opinion if you already gave it in your introduction).

Now, take a look at the IELTS music essay model answer.

IELTS Music Essay Model Answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Music exists in some form or another in every culture around the world and it provides enjoyment to millions of people. However, some people are concerned that traditional music is being lost because of the popularity of international music.

Without a doubt, music is a necessity. Firstly, music is important as it provides enjoyment and pleasure in daily life. People listen to music to relax at home, to relieve the boredom of long journeys, and to dance to in the evening at clubs. Not only this, music is also an expression of culture, often being an essential part of religious ceremonies such as weddings and funerals or yearly festivals. It is also now common in educational development as children learn to play music at school.

In considering which kind of music is the most important, international music is certainly useful to society because it can be argued that it helps us to understand and relate to other people, cultures and countries as we all listen to the same songs. This has occurred as globalization means Western music is heard around the world. However, it is critical that this is not at the expense of traditional music. It should be a priority to preserve this since it teaches people about their history, and helps societies remember and retain their national and cultural identity.

To conclude, I would argue that one type of music is not more important or useful than another. Traditional music is vital and should be preserved as it is part of a country’s cultural identity, but both are needed as they provide enjoyment to people in different ways.

(270 words)

As you can see, the IELTS music essay answer is 270 words.

There is a lot more you could have written about this topic and I could have made the answer longer, but this is to show you that you can address quite a few points in a short space.

If you are a good writer and you can write more then that is fine, but most people cannot write much more if they have to brainstorm, plan and check their grammar as well as write the answer.

The question has quite a few points to discuss and they are all within the essay.

Writing Task 2: Music for bringing people of different cultures and ages together

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least  250  words.

Sample Answer 1: [Agreement]

Music plays a crucial role in our lives and eliminates differences among various cultures and generations. It symbolises harmony and reflects humanity. So, I agree with the notion that music helps bring people from various cultures and generations together. One of the reasons music excretes the barriers among different nations and cultures is that people enjoy music from every part of the world, and it speaks the same language, which embodies human emotion, joy, love and sorrow. Music does not need interpretation to be enjoyed and understood as it touches our hearts and resonates in our minds. No matter what language we speak or understand, we appreciate the melody and depth of music which is why people of all ages can sit together and enjoy the same music. For instance, some viral music in foreign languages in our country signifies how it speaks our minds and hearts rather than just a human language. Moreover, nations influence each other with the type of music they produce and the type of musical instruments they use. This amalgamation reduces cultural differences and brings people from different cultures and ages to a common platform. To cite an example, many music genres, that we enjoy these days, were derived from multiple nations and cultures and people from all these cultures enjoy and love them. Finally, music is an art form which is enjoyed by all, and this helps reduce the generation and age gaps among people. To illustrate, when the national anthem is played, children, adults and elders all tune to the same emotion, which is patriotism, and their unity is stronger than ever. The same can be said when music evokes other emotions like love, sadness and so on. Besides, some music categories are loved by all, and the listeners feel a sense of togetherness in a divine way which is almost absent in other art forms. It not only eliminates age gaps but also the generation and cultural gaps. In conclusion, music, as a universally accepted and supreme art form, enriches our lives and strengthens the connections between us, regardless of our backgrounds, culture and age.

Sample Answer 2: [Disagreement]

Music can stimulate our minds and bodies and also offer some temporary relief from mental agony and sadness. Music probably can do many other things, but it can not bring people of different cultures and ages together. And this essay will explain why we can not rely on music to accomplish such a difficult task.

Music has some elements and qualities to bring some like-minded people within, not outside of a certain culture, country or nation closer together in a common bond because the tone and tune of that music sound so familiar to them. Many music lovers even suggest that music is the food for our soul, regardless of our ages. True that may be, but when we are pinning our hopes on music to unite people of different cultures and ages, we are becoming too much optimistic, to say the least, because culture is a very difficult subject to understand and so is “human nature”.

Culture is not only about what we like to listen to, or what we do not for some temporary pleasure or gratification.  Rather, culture, among other things, very predominantly is also about “how we are so dissimilar to each other”, and it is essentially this “wish” or “sentiment” that helps us cling to our own ways of life, no matter how “peculiar” or “weird” that may look to other cultures. It is because of this strong “sentiment” that even though, almost all the countries in the continent of South America essentially speak the same language or practice the same religion, they are not merged into only one country. The same applies to different ages as well, and that is why we see, more often than not, that while a young guy likes some heavy rock or heavy metal music, an older person likes a more traditional or classic type of music.

So, from the discussion above, it should be fairly clear to us that music is important for our life, but it is not a good way to bring people of different cultures or ages together.

Introduction:  with our position Body Paragraph 1:  answering the first question Body Paragraph 2:  answering the second question Conclusion:  repeating our position

You can see a more general and detailed  template for Task 2 questions  on this page. We have also written a more detailed analysis of how to answer the  different Task 2 question types here .

The Question

There are many different types of music in the world today.

Why do we need music?

Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

IELTS Task 2 Model Essay on Traditional Music by Andrew Turner @ EnglishWithAnExpert.com

Humans have long sought to harness the expressive power of music to convey their feelings. It is inconceivable to imagine a human civilisation without its own traditional musical instruments.   However, due to globalisation, many people fear that national and traditional music will be eroded by the international industry. I agree with this stance, and I believe that more efforts should be made to maintain the musical heritage of diverse cultural groups.

Music has played a central role in shaping people’s cultural identity. For this reason, music is deemed to be an indispensable tool, through which a sense of belonging can be developed among younger generations. An excellent example of this role is national anthems which are played at national events. Additionally, music is a repository of the collective memory of people, and this is why composers have deployed their musical prowess to narrate and record history. If we allow international music to be embedded within our culture, we will dilute our sense of belonging.

It might be argued that younger generations should be acquainted with different musical traditions to develop tolerance towards other cultures. Others think that broadening our musical horizons can enrich our traditional music by infusing it with various genres of music. I agree with these views; however, a priority should be given to local musical traditions in our national curriculum. To maintain the diversity of humanity’s musical heritage, children should be taught how to play their own inherited musical instruments.

In conclusion, over the span of our history, music has played a pivotal role in developing a sense of belonging among the young. However, the changes that are wrought by the globalised music industry can weaken our traditions and heritage. As such, greater space should be given to local music in education systems worldwide.

Band 7 Sample Answer for Writing Task 2 Question – Why is Music Important for Many People

Most people find music to be highly important. There are other factors that account for this love of music.

Firstly, music is popular as it is universal. Anyone who can hear sound can listen to and understand music. It helps people connect artistically through music. For example, in music festivals, individuals from various backgrounds and different corners of the world meet and unite through music, irrespective of language barriers. Secondly, music has the power to evoke memories, sentiments, and emotions in listeners. For example, a sad musical passage may occasionally bring up memories of challenging circumstances in your life.

Also, everybody can listen to music, regardless of their financial situation, because we can sing or make pleasant noises with a simple hand clap or use objects from daily life like spoons or glass tumblers, etc. Lastly, in today’s fast-paced world, music provides an effective means of stress relief. It brings about joy and helps to let go of the tension. Pharell Williams’ new song, “Happy”, is a prime example, as this song greatly benefits people throughout the world. As a result, a few days following the song’s release, many videos featuring people laughing and dancing can be found on YouTube!

Thus, music plays a significant role in our lives as each of us uses the “power” of music for various purposes, such as emotional expression, therapeutic effect, and social relationships. (230 words)

Model Essay for IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Function of Music is to Help People Relax

Some people think that the most important function of music is to help people relax. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model essay for IELTS Writing Task 2 Opinion Essay - Topic Music

IELTS Writing Task 2 Question

Sample answer.

Nowadays the music industry has grown dramatically (drastically) and has become one of the most popular (=sought-after) hobbies of many people. Many believe that one of the most characteristics (attributes/ features) of melody is to help people become calm and reduce stress. I completely agree with this opinion and think that music is the nutrition of the spirits, which is why people can benefit from listening to the melody. In the next few paragraphs, I will be explaining my point of view.

First of all, there is no second doubt that music is needed and everyone listens to music at least once a day, and it helps individuals reduce their stress after a stressful (nerve-racking) long day. Music has the magical power of reducing stress for those who work under pressure . Moreover, it is known that music has been used as a healing method to treat some mental health issues. For example, mental health facilities use music as a method of treatment to heal clients who have mental tiredness, such as depression (the state of feeling very unhappy and without hope) and anxiety, and the result shows that people who listened to music are thinking more positively and feeling much better than before.

Secondly, the most noticeable (=significant, major) advantage of music is that it helps people who need focus and concentration, such as doctors, pilots and engineers. In other words, these jobs need precise (=exact) calculations, and if not, it can cause losing money, wasting time and even death. For instance, a surgery doctor has to concentrate when he does the operation, if he is not calm, he might not focus while doing the operation, and it can cost the patient’s life. Thus, music is an essential need for people who have to pay more attention to their job.

In conclusion, people could benefit from listening to music to relax, and music can be used to heal some mental health problems, and also can help people who need high focus and concentration in their jobs.

Structure of the opinion essay

Essay 55 – Music is a good way of bringing people together

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 55.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer: [Agreement]

Some believe that music transcends cultural boundaries and blurs the disparity in generations. Although I believe that they exaggerate the impact of music patching up the differences in ages, I steadfastly agree with the notion that music is a handy tool for bringing people of different cultures together.

To begin with, music is not good at reconciling the generation gaps. In fact, from empirical evidence, it seems that most people incline to enjoy the songs from their formative stages and they very often look upon the current vogue of music with disdain. This happens because every epoch has its trend of music that profoundly shapes a particular paradigm of thought and people tend to pick specific songs and singers that they relate to a certain period of their lives. To justify the same, there is an epitome of our family. I love to enjoy the songs of Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, whereas my father prefers the insightful lyrics of The Beatles and Scorpions. Thus, music keeps the differences between generations in a salient way rather than bridging the gaps due to the different trends and characteristics of different eras.

However, music has become the universal language that unites people around the world, regardless of nationality, race, religion, or creed. This is because the underlying structures and melodic elements of music are similar across the world. Some recent research reveals that humans worldwide share the same universal musical grammar. So, people all over the world can comprehend the messages of music regardless of its origin. That is to say that music can serve as an emotional hub of cultures, expressing feelings that are common to all. A good example here is Wind of Change by Scorpions. The song has become an international sensation due to its rallying cry for unification, liberty, and a message of hope. The song brings nations of disparate cultures together through an overwhelming urge for solidarity, freedom and a sense of optimism.

To reiterate, music contributes to generational disparity for its intrinsic fashions of a particular period. However, there is compelling evidence that it is a magical instrument that forges the bonds between the disparate cultural groups.

Model Answer: [Disgreement]

Music is claimed to be a good instrument for narrowing cultural differences and generation gaps. This essay completely disagrees with this notion and believes that music cannot bring people of different cultural backgrounds together due to nationalism and also cannot alleviate generation barriers simply because it conveys different meanings to different generations.

Music is not a particularly good connector in terms of cultural differences by reason of nationalism. This is because nationalism offers fellow countrymen the consciousness of the distinctive characteristics of a nation and the intent to emphasize and glorify those characteristics that play a significant role in music. Music, therefore, creates a strong identification with a particular political group. For example, people are likely to enjoy music that evokes a sense of shared collective heritage as well as a common cultural past. Thus, the music fails to bridge the cultural gaps.

Likewise, music means different things to different age groups. Each generation’s music embodies the aspirations, emotions, and struggles of people living in that specific era. And as individuals carry different views on many political and social issues they get further divided by the distinctive tastes of music. That is why a father is rarely found enjoying the same music as his son. It is quite common for people to complain about others’ music choices are too slow, too shallow, too fast, too soft, or too loud. Even singers with a wide range of appeal, like John Lenon, are not always favourite by both extremes of the generation disparity.

To conclude, music is not a good bone of connection among different cultures because nationalism has a profound influence on music that develops a sense of shared collective heritages. Similarly, it also cannot reduce the generational differences because music signifies different meanings to different generations.

Step 1: Read and Understand the Question

The first step to nailing task 2 essays is to read and understand the question carefully. Most of the time, candidates answer the question without understanding what it demands. Candidates should carefully analyse the question, identify the question type and try to identify the keywords. Finally, they should clearly understand the instructions and then attempt to answer.

Step 2: Plan the Answer

Once students have understood the question, they need to plan the structure of the answer. This will allow candidates to organise their ideas and produce a clear and coherent response.

Step 3: Write a Solid Introduction

The introduction of the essay should give an idea of what the essay is all about. Make sure to write an appropriate introduction conveying the gist of the essay.

Step 4: Carefully Curate the Main Body
