The Columbia University School of Nursing PhD program is a full-time, research-intensive curriculum that prepares nurses for careers as nurse scientists who will conduct research across a broad range of populations and health conditions. Importantly, much of our research is focused on health disparity populations with the long-term goal of informing health policy and clinical practice across the lifespan.

Columbia Nursing provides three years (eight semesters) of funding for tuition, related fees, health insurance, and a stipend for full-time PhD students.

Program Design

Our PhD program provides students with an understanding of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of nursing science and a strong foundation in research methods (design, statistics, measurement, quantitative and qualitative methods) for clinical, translational and health services research. All students are mentored by research advisors with active programs of research as they move toward independent research and assume the roles of doctorally prepared nurse scientists.  

As a Columbia Nursing PhD student, you will learn to:

• Design, conduct, and report multidisciplinary research studies that increase knowledge to improve the health and well-being of patients and families across the lifespan
• Advance the state of the science in a substantive area of research through application of innovative and rigorous methods
• Promote health and well-being for individuals and families in the context of their communities
• Provide leadership in improving the health care delivery system at local, national, and international levels
• Collaborate with other professionals to evaluate and develop policies for delivery of health service
• Translate evidence accumulated through research into practice and policy at multiple levels

As part of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), Columbia Nursing enjoys a unique collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, and the College of Dental Medicine. CUIMC provides myriad opportunities for interprofessional collaboration in research . 

The PhD curriculum builds on the foundation of nursing science by bringing together practice, policy, translational research, and leadership. The core courses provide the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct relevant and well-designed research studies. Electives strengthen an area of clinical interest or intensify understanding of a specific research or analytic method. 

Both post-master's and post-BSN students admitted to the program will complete a minimum of 57 credits. The curriculum plan is designed to make it possible to complete the program in three years for those students with clearly defined plans for their dissertation research.

PhD courses are offered in three major areas:

• Theoretical foundations of nursing science
• Analytical foundations of nursing science
• Electives and application

Students must be registered as full-time for the duration of the program (typically three to four years). The minimum number of semester credits in required coursework is 37 (four semesters) for eligibility to progress to the qualifying exam. Six of the 37 credits required to be completed prior to the qualifying examination are elective courses tailored to the student’s dissertation topic and/or dissertation methods. The PhD program requires nine credits of elective courses. A minimum of 57 total credits is required for program completion.

Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination helped me to combine the content I learned in my courses and my research interests so I could further articulate my research question. Performing a scoping review on my topic of interest immersed me in the current literature and was crucial to the development of my dissertation. This experience prepared me to successfully work independently through the rest of my Ph.D.

In addition to coursework, students must successfully complete a qualifying examination with written and oral components. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded after successful completion of the qualifying examination and the student enters doctoral candidacy status.

Dissertation

Students are expected to successfully defend a dissertation reporting original research. Four dissertation credits are required each semester during the dissertation phase of study.

The coursework and research mentoring at Columbia Nursing helped prepare me for the next steps in my education and career post-PhD. In addition to structured coursework and educational seminars, the school provided beneficial informal support and resources. Feedback sessions with both peers and faculty were very helpful in preparing me to present posters and presentations at research conferences. The school also provided funds for travel to conferences where I presented my research. The grant writing workshop and mock reviews of grant applications provided me with tools and feedback needed to successfully apply for additional funding for my research. Finally, interdisciplinary research collaborations with faculty provided me with opportunities to work with researchers from several disciplines to complete my dissertation.

What is it like to be a PhD student at Columbia Nursing?

Required courses (excluding electives).

Building upon the foundations provided in the quantitative and qualitative research method courses, in this course students examine advanced methods and frameworks frequently used in studying health policy, health services research problems and comparative effectiveness research. In addition to a critical review of the methods, the course examines the relationship among science, policy and healthcare delivery, and identifies critical questions shaping the future policy research agenda.

Interdisciplinary research is an approach to advancing scientific knowledge in which researchers from different disciplines work at the borders of those disciplines in order to address complex questions and problems. Successful interdisciplinary efforts require mastery of specific competencies. This seminar will introduce students to competencies in interdisciplinary research through a combination of readings, case studies, and lectures in each necessary aspect, chosen from fields essential to successful interdisciplinary research. It is intended to assist learners to understand why and how different professional disciplines must work together to generate and disseminate knowledge. We will examine: different conceptualizations of interdisciplinary; barriers to and facilitators of interdisciplinary research; approaches, benefits, and limitations of collaboration and team science; methods for measuring interdisciplinary collaboration; the intersection of translational and interdisciplinary scientific strategies; and individual researchers' experiences with and evaluations of their own interdisciplinary scientific projects. Learners will develop a set of skills to be effective members and leaders of interdisciplinary research teams.

The student works with a faculty member or other scientist who is conducting a research project. The specific nature of the experience depends on the nature and stage of the research, but might include search and review of relevant literature, data collection, data analysis and/or grant preparation.

This course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are associated with dissertation research.

This foundational course will examine the philosophy of nursing knowledge including foundations of nursing theory, concept development, and its application to research. Students will explore approaches to the analysis and development of concepts and the application of nursing concepts and frameworks to clinical practice and research. Ideas, assumptions, events, people, and writings are examined for their influence, inter-relationships, and significance to nursing. Types of reasoning will be evaluated within the context of nursing and health. Major theories, frameworks, and concepts of nursing and health and their implication for research will be discussed. The focus of the course will be on development of critical thinking skills in analyzing key elements of philosophies, concepts, and conceptual frameworks.

In this foundational course students will study the links between theory and the psychosocial and biophysical measures used in nursing research.  Students will employ the principles of classical test theory and item response theory to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurement.  Application of computational techniques will be covered in the lab portion of the course.  Course topics include types and uses of measures, item/scale development and validation, survey methods, reporting for publication, and the relationships between measurement and research ethics, cultural competency, and health disparities.

This course provides a foundation for quantitative research methods and design. Research process topics examined include: appraisal of the quality of existing evidence; identification of gaps in the literature; formulation of researchable questions and testable hypotheses; types of research variables; sampling designs and power analyses; and the uses, strengths, and weaknesses of various experimental and quasi-experimental research designs.

This course provides an in-depth examination of qualitative study designs and methods through a combination of theoretical discussion and hands-on practical experience. Topics include paradigm distinctions, theoretical perspectives, designs and methods, critique of research reports, and ethical issues in qualitative research.

The course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are not associated with the required course sequence. Such activities must accrue more than 20 hours/week.

This course is intended to provide a hands-on introduction to delivering data visualizations to serve as a critical lens through which individual and population level health can be examined. The proposed course will combine concepts and theory in data visualization and exploration and practice to enable the student to gain the necessary knowledge to use graphics and statistics to explore the data, find and construct a narrative, and share findings in ways colleagues and decision-makes can readily understand and act upon.

This course is designed to provide the tools for the doctorally prepared nurse to evaluate, translate and integrate published research results into clinical practice. During the course, students will learn how to conceptualize clinical practice problems and transform them into answerable clinical research questions, how to search for the best clinical evidence, and how to assess clinical evidence using basic epidemiological, biostatistical and scientific principles. The course will culminate in a systematic review or meta-analysis of a body of research relevant to advanced practice nursing.

Introduction

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)1 degree represents the highest level of formal education to prepare individuals to advance the scholarship of discovery for a given discipline (AACN, 2010). The PhD is a prerequisite for academia and certain senior leadership roles in multiple disciplines within academic institutions and development of independence in scientific or scholarly pursuits outside academia. The PhD is a research-focused degree that prepares individuals to create, translate, and communicate new knowledge as leaders within institutions of higher education and outside of academia. Postdoctoral study is recommended for individuals who plan to pursue careers in a research-intensive environment and wish to acquire expert understanding of the theories, methods, and analytics of a field. Conferral of the PhD demonstrates the graduate’s strong scientific emphasis within the discipline as well as an understanding of the importance of translational science, dissemination of innovations, and engagement in interdisciplinary 2 collaboration. In the field of nursing, the PhD graduate is prepared to steward the profession, develop its science, define its uniqueness, maintain its professional integrity, and educate the next generation of nursing professionals. To achieve its vision of improving health outcomes for all people, particularly those in populations experiencing social and health inequities, the profession must produce and support PhD-prepared nurses, nurse educators, and nurse scientists who reflect the broad diversity of society as a whole.

Background: Few quantitative studies have documented the types of research topics most commonly employed by nursing PhD students and whether they differ by program delivery (in-person vs. online/hybrid programs).

Objectives: We examined a large set of publicly available PhD dissertation abstracts to (a) describe the relative prevalence of different research topics and methods and (b) test whether the primary topics and methods used differed between online or hybrid and in-person PhD programs. A secondary goal was to introduce the reader to modern text-mining approaches to generate insights from a document corpus.

Methods: Our database consisted of 2,027 dissertation abstracts published between 2015 and 2019. We used a structural topic modeling text-mining approach to explore PhD students' research topics and methods in United States-based doctoral nursing programs.

Results: We identified 24 different research topics representing a wide range of research activities. Most of the research topics identified did not differ in prevalence between online/hybrid and in-person programs. However, online/hybrid programs were more likely to engage students in research focused on nursing education, professional development, work environment, simulation, and qualitative analysis. Pediatrics, sleep science, older adults and aging, and chronic disease management were more prevalent topics in in-person-only programs.

Discussion: The range of topics identified highlights the breadth of research nursing PhD students' conduct. Both in-person and online/hybrid programs offer a range of research opportunities, although we did observe some differences in topic prevalence. These differences could be due to the nature of some types of research (e.g., research that requires an in-person presence) or differences in research intensity between programs (e.g., amount of grant funding or proximity to a medical center). Future research should explore why research topic prevalence may vary by program delivery. We hope that this text-mining application serves as an illustrative example for researchers considering how to draw inferences from large sets of text documents. We are particularly interested in seeing future work that might combine traditional qualitative approaches and large-scale text mining to leverage the advantages of each.

Diane Dahl started at Bethel in 1998, primarily teaching medical surgical nursing, cultural diversity, foundations, and leadership courses. She has served in various dean roles since 2010.  Diane assisted in the development of multiple nursing programs and assisted with successful accreditation visits. She has traveled to Uganda Christian University multiple times, facilitating nursing curriculum development and teaching in UCU's Masters of Nursing Education courses.  She is an active leader in the Minnesota Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Dr. Joyce Black is back as host for this NPIAP episode, and she is joined by Susan Solmos who is a PhD graduate of the UNMC College of Nursing. Dr. Solmos is currently a part of the University of Chicago Medical Center's Center for Nursing Professional Practice and Research. Drs. Black and Solmos discuss the horrific nature of facial pressure injuries brought on by the (very important) mask wearing of our nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Solmos wrote her dissertation on how nurses shared their pressure injuries to the world via Instagram. This qualitative data was then used to show how the N95 masks were protecting yet also harming the nurses on the frontlines. While not news to our listeners, this is a great discussion between two passionate wound specialists on how our most beloved fighters during the COVID-19 pandemic, were fighting their own physical battle.

You can renew your license up to 60 days before your current license expires.

Renewal notifications will be emailed to your email address on file with the board at 60, 50, 40 and 30 days prior to the license expiration date. Renew your license early to avoid a late fee or lapse in licensure. All continuing education requirements must be completed pior to license renewal. 

Continuing Education

Licensees are responsible for meeting all continuing education requirements and should review the rules carefully and frequently. Review the rules for detailed information about continuing education definitions, requirements, standards, criteria and other important specific to this profession.

How to Select and Document Continuing Education

The licensing board does not pre-approve continuing education providers, sponsors or individual programs. It is the licensees’ responsibility to determine if the continuing education programs they attend meet the requirements of their professional licensing board.

A percentage of licensees are randomly audited following each license renewal cycle. If selected, the licensee must submit to the board office an individual certificate of completion issued to the licensee or evidence of successful completion of the course from the course sponsor. These documents must contain the course title, date(s), contact hours, sponsor and licensee's name. In some instances, licensees will be requested to provide to the board additional information, including program content, objectives, presenters, location and schedule. Many times an inclusive brochure meets this requirement.

When selecting continuing education programs, licensees need to make sure they are compliant with administrative rule requirements. Some professions require licensees to meet specific requirements as a condition of renewal.  These may include limits on presentation method (e.g. self-study, ICN, etc.), specific hours on ethics and Iowa law and rules, clinical content, or hours required in a specific practice discipline.

To ensure compliance, each licensee must understand the continuing education administrative rules for their profession prior to choosing and attending a particular program. No matter what a program brochure indicates, it is the responsibility of the licensee to ensure compliance with licensing requirements.

In summary all licensees should:

• Be familiar with the continuing education requirements of their professional boards.
• Obtain inclusive written materials about continuing education programs from program sponsors for post-renewal auditing purposes.
• Maintain certificates of completion that includes the program or course title, date(s), contact hours, sponsor and licensee's name for four years.

Extension or Exemption for Disability or Illness

A licensee who had a physical or mental disability or illness during the license period may apply for an extension or exemption. An exemption provides for an extension of time or exemption from some or all of the continuing education requirements. An applicant shall submit a completed application form approved by the board for an exemption.

• Application for Continuing Education Extension/Exemption for Disability or Illness

The application requires the signature of a licensed health care professional who can attest to the existence of a disability or illness during the license period.

If the application is from a license who is the primary caregiver for a relative who is ill or disabled and needs care from that primary caregiver, the physician shall verify the licensee's status as the primary caregiver.

A licensee who applies for an exemption shall be notified of the decision regarding the application. A licensee who obtains approval shall retain a copy of the exemption to be presented to the board upon request.

Guidelines for Continuing Education Sponsors

Potential sponsors are responsible for independently determining if the programs they provide conform to the continuing education requirements set forth in the rules regulations of the professional boards.

To make this determination, thoroughly review the rules for the board(s) in which you are interested prior to offering continuing education to Iowa licensees. By providing inclusive information about the content, objectives and applicability of your program to professional practice, you will assist licensees to make informed decisions when selecting continuing education.

• Be familiar with the continuing education requirements of their professional audiences.
• Provide inclusive written materials to all program participants.
• Notify licensees that materials should be retained for four years for auditing purposes.
• Provide a certificate of completion that includes the program or course title, date(s), contact hours, sponsor and licensee's name.

Iowa Practitioner Program

The Iowa Practitioner Program (IPP) is available to licensees across multiple licensing boards in Iowa. The Iowa Practitioner Review Committee (IPRC) reviews self-reports made by licensees to determine eligibility for participation. 

IPP was established in 1996 to support licensees who struggle with impairments due to alcohol or drug abuse, mental health conditions, and/or physical disorders. 

The IPRC designs an individualized health contract to meet the needs of the licensee. State law mandates that information in the possession of the IPRC remain confidential. Participation in the program is not a matter of public record.

" Impairment " means an inability to practice with reasonable safety and skill as a result of alcohol or drug abuse, dependency, or addiction, or any mental or physical disorder or disability.

" Self-report " means the licensee providing written or oral notifications to the board that the licensee has received or may receive a diagnosis as having an impairment before the board's receiving a complaint or report alleging an impairment before the date of self-report.

Criteria for Participation in IPP

The IPRC determines whether practitioners are eligible to participate in the program monitored by the committee. A person is ineligible to take part in the program for any of the following reasons:

• The practitioner engaged in the unlawful diversion or distribution of controlled illegal substances to a third party, or for personal gain or profit;
• The practitioner is already under a board order;
• The practitioner has caused harm or injury to a patient;
• The board is investigating the practitioner that concerns serious matters related to the practitioner's competence;
• The practitioner failed to provide truthful information or refused to cooperate with the board or the IPRC; or
• The practitioner has been subject to a civil administrative or criminal sanction for serious infractions of law, professional ethics, or administrative rules related to the practice.

The Health Contract

Based upon the recommendation of an approved evaluator, the IPRC creates an individualized health contract, which provides a detailed description of the goals of the program, requirements for successful completion, and the practitioner's obligations.

Note: The IPRC may refer to the board participants who are not compliant with the terms of their contract for consideration of disciplinary action.

IPRC Composition

The chairperson of the board appoints the members of the IPRC. The IPRC includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Executive Director of the board or the director's designee from the board's staff;
• A practitioner who has remained free of addiction for two or more years after completing a recovery program for drug or alcohol dependency, addiction, or abuse;
• A physician/counselor with expertise in substance abuse/addiction treatment programs;
• A psychiatrist or psychologist; and
• A public member.

Why Use IPP?

The program encourages practitioners who have impairments to get the help they need. All information received by IPP and IPRC remains confidential as long as the practitioner complies with the terms of their agreement or health contract.

By self-reporting to IPP, the practitioner may avoid formal disciplinary action by the licensing Board. Formal disciplinary action taken against a practitioner is a matter of public record. The board reports the action to the press, the National Practitioners Data Bank (NPDB), insurance companies, and to other state and federal authorities. Participation in the program is confidential.

Health care practitioners must report knowledge of another practitioner's possible impairment to the board. Health care practitioners who fail to report colleagues with a possible impairment may be subject to disciplinary action by the board. It is in the practitioner's best interest to self-report an impairment before someone else files complaint or report.

When Should Someone Self-Report to IPP?

If any of the following apply to a practitioner, it is in that person's best interest to self-report to IPP as soon as possible:

• Charged with, and/or arrested for OWI, or for another alcohol or drug related offense;
• Disciplined by another federal or state agency for alcohol or drug abuse;
• Evaluated or treated for a substance use disorder, or is currently enrolled in a recovery program;
• Diagnosed with a mental health condition and/or a physical health condition;
• Practiced after drinking alcohol or taking an illegal or mind/mood altering substance;
• Addiction/dependence on drugs, alcohol or prescription medication; and/or
• Urged by friend(s), family or colleagues to get help for alcohol or drug abuse, or a mental or physical condtion.

Sana D. Karam, MD, PhD, a renowned radiation oncologist widely known for cutting-edge cancer research that combines radiation therapy and immunotherapy to treat head and neck, and pancreatic tumors, has been named the James S. Karam comes to WashU Medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she is the Marsico Endowed Chair of Head and Neck Cancer Research and a professor and vice chair of translational research in the Department of Radiation Oncology.

A passionate clinician, Karam also is an innovative scientist. She holds three investigator-initiated R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and multiple industry-sponsored awards, is project leader of the Head and Neck Cancer SPORE at the University of Colorado and leads numerous investigator-initiated trials focused on advancing research from the laboratory bench to the bedside.

“Our leadership team was deeply impressed by Dr. Karam’s experience and accomplishments and unanimously endorsed her to shepherd the Department of Radiation Oncology from its current prestigious position into the new era of technology and scientific innovations revolutionizing the science and practice of radiation therapy,” said David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs, the George and Carol Bauer Dean of the School of Medicine, and the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor. “Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Karam has led research that has challenged some long-standing paradigms in radiation therapy, and we are delighted she will be joining WashU Medicine to help push the field forward and lead the department in developing the next generation of cancer therapies.”

A native of Lebanon, Karam was the first in her family to attend college and also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Her research is focused on understanding how radiation therapy changes the immune microenvironment of tumors and how that knowledge can be harnessed to develop new therapies for hard-to-treat cancers of the pancreas and head and neck. She has shown that targeting key immune cell receptors with radiation can enhance the ability of T cells to attack and kill pancreatic cancer cells. Her research also suggests that the practice of irradiating lymph nodes near the tumor in head and neck cancers may dampen the anti-tumor immune response by reducing the activation of killer T cells. Based on this observation, immunotherapy may be more effective in head and neck cancers if radiation to the lymph nodes is reduced. Her work also has led to the translation of a combination of radiation therapy and immunotherapy from animal models to early clinical trials in patients with head and neck cancer.

In addition, Karam had led multiple studies on population health services that have resulted in initiatives focused on improving patient care. She also collaborates in clinical and preclinical research with several leading industry partners, including Roche, Genentech, Amgen, Tvardi and AstraZeneca. Karam is a co-inventor on two U.S. patents and three pending patents. She is also the principal investigator on an NIH-funded training grant in lung and head and neck cancer and leads her department’s diversity, equity and inclusion program.

“It is an immense honor to be selected to lead the Department of Radiation Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine,” Karam said. “I look forward to working with the dedicated and talented physicians, researchers and trainees at WashU Medicine to deliver innovative care to patients and carry out critical research to improve outcomes for patients in the future.”

Karam also excels in teaching and mentorship, including training many junior faculty members, resident physicians, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, undergraduate students and research technicians. She has been recognized for her work with trainees, including with the National Educator of the Year Award from the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology, in 2019.

Karam has an extensive educational background in science and medicine. She earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the American University of Beirut, where she later worked as a charge nurse in the coronary care unit. She continued her nursing training at the University of Maryland, where she earned a master’s degree in trauma and critical care nursing while also working at the multi-trauma intensive care unit at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

She earned her doctoral degree in 2001 in physiology and biophysics from the University of Washington. During her doctoral training, which focused on developmental neurobiology, she also worked as a nurse in the critical care unit of Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Karam later completed a postdoctoral fellowship in oncology at Johns Hopkins University and then attended medical school. After earning her medical degree from Georgetown University in 2008, she pursued her internship in internal medicine at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. For her residency in radiation oncology, she returned to Georgetown, where she served as chief resident from 2012-13.

In 2013, Karam joined the faculty of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Colorado. She is the institutional principal investigator for multiple clinical trials and chairs many committees and task forces, including at NCI, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Head and Neck Society, and the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

She also has received the Bob Bast Translational Research Grant by the V Foundation, an honor for a research project that receives the highest rating by the organization’s scientific advisory committee.

Karam will succeed  Dennis Hallahan, MD , who has led the department for 15 years. Hallahan, the Elizabeth H. and James S. McDonnell III Distinguished Professor of Radiation Oncology, will continue leading his own research laboratory.

Open subject Scholarships

The open subject scholarships allow for research to be carried out on all subjects linked to the PhD.

It is not possible to participate by selecting a specific open subject scholarship . The option to compete for a specific scholarship can only be made for thematic  scholarships. The research topic of each open subject scholarship will be agreed with the Board of Professors.

When applying, you must specify if you intend to compete or not for a scholarship: if you choose to compete, you’ll automatically compete for open subject scholarships.

UCF Nursing Student Making a Purposeful Impact in Public Health

After commencement this week, nursing student Rebekah May plans to pursue her dreams to make a big impact in public health in the U.S. and around the world.

“I came to UCF determined to improve the world, but I had no idea how,” says Rebekah May, who will graduate this week from UCF’s College of Nursing.

She quickly figured out how. After arriving at UCF from Spring Hill, Tennessee, May got involved on campus. First, she volunteered with the UCF Police Department as a LEAD Scholar and then served as a co-leader at an afterschool club at the Orange County Public Schools Academic Center for Excellence in the Parramore neighborhood in downtown Orlando. That is when the then environmental studies major began to realize her true calling.

“My eyes were opened to the disparities even 20 minutes away from me, and I knew I wanted to help people who needed help the most.”

At that time, May was taking an anatomy class and discovered a passion.

“I loved the biological mystery of the human body, and how I could always keep learning,” she says. “I found the intersection of that purpose and interest in nursing.”

A Calling to Care

Once in the competitive, upper-division traditional bachelor’s in nursing program at the Orlando campus, May’s calling came into a clearer focus. In her first public health clinical, she worked with local service organizations as part of the college’s service-learning curriculum.

“I continued working with those organizations after that clinical, and I joined the President’s Leadership Council to advocate for further UCF volunteer awareness and involvement,” says May, who was inducted this spring and awarded the 2024 Order of Pegasus — UCF’s highest student honor. “Since I discovered what I believe to be my purpose, I am intent to make a difference in any way that I can.”

The clinic seeks to provide asylum seekers with free medical affidavits to support their court cases. The interdisciplinary effort also provides real-world experience for student volunteers to connect with law, nursing, medicine, social work and psychology.

This summer, May plans to transition to a mentor role at the clinic and pass it to new leadership for future UCF students to learn about global health and serve local asylum seekers.

“This project has incredible potential, and I want nothing more than to develop it and hand it off to similarly passionate students to nurture,” she says.

A Curiosity for Research

In addition to service and volunteer activities, the Burnett Honors Scholar maintained a 3.9 GPA in the rigorous nursing program and conducted original research.

May’s Honors Undergraduate Thesis, “Breakfast Skipping in College Students and its Associations with Eating Behaviors,” was presented at Harvard’s National Collegiate Research Conference this past winter.

Last month, she orally presented her two-stage observational study at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in California.

“It was an honor to share the podium with the next leaders in research,” she says.

She plans to continue this research after graduation, seeking additional opportunities to present findings and working with her research chair, Assistant Professor Shante Jeune to publish her original research in a peer-reviewed dietetics journal.

A Passion for Service

Her bachelor’s in nursing degree from UCF is just the beginning for May.

“I will make my mentors proud, and I will pay it forward,” she says. “I am determined to empower nurses in low-resource settings so we can develop self-sufficient, community-based healthcare networks to enhance the accessibility of care for all.”

May has many plans after graduation to accomplish her goals and the drive to be successful in her endeavors. First, she will complete a summer public health internship with Osceola Community Health Services to learn more about the effective application of public health principles to marginalized populations in Osceola County through advocacy, outreach, and hands-on clinical work.

Next, May will attend the American Enterprise Institute’s Summer Honors Program in Washington, D.C., where she will be a part of a small undergraduate cohort discussing regional poverty and economic mobility in the U.S.

“I will represent a nursing perspective and add first-hand experience with Orlando’s regional poverty to the conversation,” she says.

She will also take the national licensing exam to officially become a registered nurse, and in that new role, will serve as a medical team volunteer at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla.

In August, she will move a little closer to home and begin a nurse residency at Duke Regional Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

To continue to become an effective nurse leader on a global scale, May plans to apply to the Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright scholarship programs and continue her volunteer work to make a difference in global health. She also plans to further her education, eventually becoming a nurse practitioner and earning a doctoral degree in epidemiology of public health.

May credits UCF College of Nursing’s curriculum, faculty and instructors to finding her calling and to supporting her success.

“I had no idea when I began the program that I would be in a position to see so much hardship and have the potential to do so much good,” she says. “I will always be a Knight nurse because my big dream started here.”

Her advice to future students, “Never participate in anything that you are not passionate about. It is the only way that you can be honest in front of the mirror or a committee and say that you spent your time worthwhile.”
