Preposition worksheets and activities.

Prepositions are words that express locations in time and space. They indicate relationships between nouns and other words. Learning prepositions is cornerstone to understanding the English language. Since prepositions are used quite frequently, it is worth taking the time to learn them.

It's often said that one shouldn't end one's sentences with a preposition. Most grammarians now agree that this is NOT a rule but a signal. There is nothing wrong with ending a clause or sentence with a preposition, but it's often an indication that the preposition is redundant or unnecessary. For example: Where did you go to school at?

This is grammatically incorrect, not because it ends with a preposition, but because the preposition is redundant. The example sentence should just say, Where did you go to school? The preposition at adds nothing to the sentence. It is unnecessary and should be removed. So while there is nothing wrong with ending a sentence with a preposition, it is often a signal that your preposition is redundant. Try to avoid constructing sentences with redundant prepositions .

Here are some preposition worksheets and activities that I've developed over the years. I hope that these resources help you achieve your goals.

Interesting Classroom Activities with Prepositions

Here are a couple of interesting ways to teach prepositions:

  • Practice Use: Hold a book above a desk. Ask students where the book is. Hold the book below the desk. Ask students to describe where the book is in relation to the desk. Move the book on the side of the desk, behind the desk, and in front of the desk, asking students to describe the location of the book in relation to the desk. Make the connection that prepositions are words that show location. Do a similar activity with their class period in relation to their lunch period to show how prepositions express time relations as well.
  • The Poser Game: Have one student leave the room. Have another student volunteer get up and hold a crazy pose, like a statue. Students should use prepositions to describe, with as much detail as possible, how the student is positioned. Then, the student on the outside is invited back into the classroom. Students try to have the new arrival replicate the pose of the former based on their descriptions.

Prepositions Lessons

Prepositions Lesson - Here is an animated PowerPoint slideshow covering prepositions. It provides definitions, examples, and practice problems. There are two versions of this presentation: one with sounds and one without. The one with sounds has voice actors reading the examples. Some students may find this distracting, however, so I have also included a version of this lesson without sounds. Would you like to see how I present this lesson? Click on the YouTube video posted after the links to the lesson. Prepositions Lesson - With Sounds | PPTX Prepositions Lesson - Without Sounds | PPTX

Prepositional Phrases Lesson - Prepositional phrases connect prepositions and their objects. This PowerPoint slideshow will help students understand, identify, and better use prepositional phrases. It includes definitions, examples, and practice problems. I've included the files with and without sound effects. I've also embedded a video of this lesson below. Prepositional Phrases Lesson - With Sounds | PPTX Prepositional Phrases Lesson - Without Sounds | PPTX

Prepositions Lesson 2 - Here is an older slideshow lesson that also explains prepositions. It provides a list of common prepositions and includes a practice activity where students identify prepositions in sentences. Prepositions Lesson PPT

Thank you very much for the wonderful site, really helped me.

what is difference between who works in the office? who does work in the office?

thanks anyway

In the first sentence, the predicate is “works.” In the second sentence, the predicate is “does” and “work” is an object. It is a thing that an unknown individual does. Both sentences express the same idea. More native speakers of English would probably use the first sentence.

Your Preposition Worksheet 2 directions say that each sentence will at least 2 prepositions. The answer key says that two of the sentences have only one preposition. Which is the error?

I see why that was confusing. Thank you for reporting this.

I updated the worksheet sometime ago and forgot about the 2 prepositions per sentence rule that I had established.

I have fixed the sentences that did not have 2 prepositions, and some of the other awkwardly phrased sentences.

Thanks for helping to make the site a better place,

Dr. Clifton Drawdy

One should never end a sentence with a preposition because all prepositions must have an object. Please quit dumbing down grammar.

Citation please?

thank you this has helped me so much but hasn’t given me the answer yet i will keep on reading and try to figure it out thanks. Xx

What’s your question?

In reference to the previous comment and your reply back on Sept. 3, 2015, I’d be interested in knowing whether the corrections were made to the worksheets. Please provide an update on the status of what is currently online as of April 13, 2016. Thank you.

Thank you for reporting these errors.

I’m sorry that it took nine months to fix.

The errors have been addressed: http://www.ereadingworksheets.com/free-grammar-worksheets/prepositions-worksheet-answers.html

If not for your persistence, it would have taken much longer.

Thanks again.

As of April 12, 2016, were the corrections made the worksheets on prepositional phrases?

I really like this site. It has help my students figure out different language methods. I appreciate it!

I’m going to add some new resources to this page in the next couple of months. Thank you for appreciating what I currently have too. Best wishes.

christy peterson

I think some of the words you marked as prepositions on your worksheet are actually subordinating conjunctions.(dependent clauses)

You’re right. I’ve been meaning to update these errors a while ago and still haven’t found time. I hope to get to it in the next month when I overhaul this section of the site and add a bunch of new content. Thank you for pointing this out. Best wishes!

What is a preposition?

According to the Cambridge dictionary , a preposition is “a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word”.

Sadly, this definition is probably of little use to children, so they may need to see them in context to fully understand.

The School Run explains that prepositions are “linking words in a sentence” and that “We use prepositions to explain where things are in time or space.

“Prepositions tell us where something is (for example, beside, under, on, against, beneath or over) or when something is happening (for example: until, during, after, before or more specifically ‘on Christmas Day’, ‘at 12 o’clock’ or ‘in August’).

Preposition examples

The School Run entry above also features a preposition list of some of the most commonly used ones in English:

What is a prepositional phrase?

A prepositional phrase is made up of a preposition, its object, and any other words that might further describe that object.

There are two main kinds of prepositional phrase:

  • Adverbial phrases: This is where the prepositional phrase modifies a verb
  • Adjectival phrases: This is where the prepositional phrase modifies a noun

Prepositional phrase examples

  • We got here as fast as we could .
  • The tiger behind the tree .
  • The house on the hill .
  • She put her gloves in her pockets .

1 | Prepositional phrases

preposition homework year 5

This Lower Key Stage 2 grammar resource provides everything you need to teach five 15-minute lessons on prepositional phrases.

As well as learning how to identify prepositional phrases and explain their use, children are challenged to come up with creative responses in their writing to this area of grammar, with colourful images included to help inspire their work.

The five SPaG lessons are designed to be taught across one week. Alternatively, you may wish to teach the sessions in larger chunks, spread over a longer period of time, or intersperse them with different grammar, punctuation and spelling lessons.

The resources included in this pack are a PowerPoint, a prepositional phrases worksheet, prepositional phrase cards, a writing plan and an uplevelling writing worksheet.

Get this pack here.

2 | Prepositional phrases video guide

Give students a short visual guide to watch with this Khan Academy video that introduces the concept of prepositional phrases.

Watch it above, or on their YouTube channel, here.

3 | KS2 Adverbial Phrases – Model Sentences for Reference, Display and Activities

preposition homework year 5

This KS2 grammar resources features a wide range of sentences using adverbial phrases for connection, which children in Year 3 and 4 can use as models for their own writing.

Because they are not all fronted adverbials , the sentences will be useful for children in Year 5 and 6, too.

The sentences are available in two versions:

  • For the table – pupil reference sheets show all of the model sentences on 2 mats which can be kept on tables and referred to during lessons. Additional versions are provided which separate the sentences into easily trimmable columns. This enables you to provide a pupil with a smaller group of phrases at a time.
  • For display – the sentences are presented at a larger size so they can be used as part of a wall display.

Check out this resource here.

4 | Prepositional phrase examples

preposition homework year 5

This list here neatly separates the prepositional phrases into commonly used (eg ‘around the world’, ‘off the top’), ones acting as adverbs (‘The present inside the big box is mine’) and ones acting as adverbs (‘Our team won against all odds ‘).

Find the full list here.

5 | Prepositional phrase examples and explanations

preposition homework year 5

Another handy list, this one includes short explanations as to what the prepositional phrase in each sentence is.

Give it a browse here.

6 | Year 5 adverbial phrases sentence builder game

preposition homework year 5

Use this sentence builder Game to develop Year 5 pupils’ use of adverbials in their sentences.

They will do this by: understanding what an adverbial or adverbial phrase is; and understanding how this can be positioned in different places within a sentence.

Pupils will use the noun, verb and adverbial phrase cards to create sentences, rehearsing them orally before writing.

The grammar game will also give pupils the opportunity to use and understand the year 5 grammar terminology in English appendix 2 when discussing their sentences.

Get this resource here.

7 | Year 6 adverbial phrase story starters worksheet

preposition homework year 5

This adverbial phrase worksheet has been designed to help children revisit and recall adverbials in KS2 – a key grammatical concept from the National Curriculum programme of study for Year 6.

The session provides a motivating and memorable image to stimulate discussion, before introducing adverbials. Children have time to practise using this feature, before undertaking a short writing task to apply what they have learnt in the context of creative writing.

The essay writers who will write an essay for me have been in this domain for years and know the consequences that you will face if the draft is found to have plagiarism. Thus, they take notes and then put the information in their own words for the draft. To be double sure about this entire thing, your final draft is being analyzed through anti-plagiarism software, Turnitin. If any sign of plagiarism is detected, immediately the changes will be made. You can get the Turnitin report from the writer on request along with the final deliverable.
