Whether you’re on Zoom or in a meeting room, you have to speak on your data if you want to get ahead.

If that makes your palms sweaty, don’t panic. Skills can be learned. It just takes time and practice.

If you’re ready to start giving more compelling social media presentations, you’re in the right spot. In this article, you’ll find a list of the essential elements of a social media marketing presentation, expert advice on speech delivery and templates to speed up your deck creation process.

What is a social media presentation?

A social media presentation is a speech, lecture or pitch in which elements of a social media strategy are shared and explained to an audience—senior leaders, internal stakeholders, clients, etc.

  • Pitch presentations : Here, the speaker aims to persuade the audience on a strategic initiative. This could involve pitching services to a potential client in an agency setting, or in-house teams pitching a new tool or process.
  • Update presentations : These presentations keep stakeholders informed about the progress of a strategy—wins, opportunities, lessons learned, etc.
  • Knowledge-sharing presentations: The speaker aims to educate stakeholders on insights gained through social media data collection .

The 4 elements of a persuasive social media presentation

It can be difficult to tell when a presentation is ready to share. After spending hours developing a talk track and creating a deck, the lines between critical information and fluff can blur. The following list will help you plan and audit presentations to ensure they’re well-received every time.

1. A cohesive narrative

Why are you delivering your social media presentation?

Behind every exceptional presentation lies a central thesis—a significant idea or perspective that you intend to convey to your audience. Even routine performance updates should have a driving purpose.

Starting from this point will align all of the information you incorporate—from your opening hook to your concluding thoughts—to create a cohesive, compelling story.

2. Succinct slides

Each slide you present should be simple, focused and void of unnecessary distractions. According to Paul Jurczynski, a TED Talk coach and cofounder of Improve Presentation, “The golden rule is to have one claim or idea per slide. If you have more to say, put it on the next slide.”

3. Compelling data visualizations

Social media marketing presentations often come down to proving ROI for stakeholders. Data visualization like graphs and charts are a compelling way to make your case.

In data journalist David McCandless’s TED talk , he explains that the beauty of data visualization is “that we can see the patterns and connections that matter and design that information so it makes more sense, it tells a story or allows us to focus only on the information that’s important.”

Create space throughout your presentation to seek feedback on crucial concepts or areas of concern. Tailored questions create engaged audiences.

Expert advice for delivering your next social media presentation

If you’re looking for presentation advice, who better to turn to than a salesperson? That’s why we went to John Barrows, CEO of JB Sales for his guidance on presenting. Barrows provides professional sales training to companies like Salesforce, LinkedIn and Amazon, plus he has over 25 years worth of presentation experience.

We asked him for his expert advice on giving exceptional presentations. Here’s what he had to say.

Know the ins and outs of your business priorities

A great presentation is all about delivering value. You need to draw distinct lines between the content and its business value . Otherwise, you risk losing your audience’s attention right from the start.

“We have seconds to get people’s attention these days,” says Barrows. “A person’s most valuable asset is their time.”

You can give more engaging presentations simply by staying up to date on company goals and priorities. Get to know what’s top of mind for senior leaders and other stakeholders so you can tailor your presentation content accordingly.

On sales calls, Barrows does this by asking each individual attendee what they’d like to get out of the meeting. You can mimic this approach by setting up regular 1:1’s with team members to stay up to date on their priorities.

Practice, practice, practice

According to Barrows, practice can and will make perfect. “Public speaking is one of the biggest fears that most people have, but a lot of it comes down to confidence and preparation. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll be in your presentation.”

Barrows refers to confidence and preparation as the art and science of giving a good presentation. The art can be seen in skilled delivery and a snazzy deck, but it’s preparation that keeps everything on track. “If you come in unprepared to a meeting and you get one curveball of a question, you tend to fall apart. Preparation gives you the confidence you need to adjust on the fly.”

Watch your playback footage

It may make you cringe, but the best way to improve your presentation skills is to record yourself and watch it back.

Barrows figured this out after taking a presentation skills course, but not through instructor feedback. It was watching himself back on video that showed him everything he wanted to fix. Common public speaking issues—like overusing filler words and standing with closed body language—are easy to spot on tape.

Remember you’re a person speaking to people

This is especially important to keep in mind when talking to business leadership. You may look around and see a group of senior executives but at the end of the day, it’s really just another person.

“When I was first starting out in sales, I would get nervous presenting in front of CEOs and people who I perceived to be smarter or more important than I was,” says Barrows. “Presenting can cause imposter syndrome. The goal is to make training as convenient as possible for all employees. When managers start to complicate things or make learning a challenge, they’ll lose employee interest fast. 

Harness your expert brand ambassadors to help lead training

You may have seen this stat somewhere before or perhaps in our previous content, but here it is again:

Employees are already sharing and talking about your brand online. Thus, a great place to start is to discover who some of your top social brand advocates already are and then harness their knowledge!

You can’t force these top advocates to help, but they are likely willing — and will be excited — to help their organization empower more employees on social media. 

Additionally, you can gather their knowledge and ideas when it comes to building materials for your social media training plan.

What To Include in Your Social Media Training Plan

In order to become a social business and see success with an employee advocacy program, you need to build a training plan around employees. 

Below are some of the necessary steps to build brand advocacy and get employees active in social sharing. 

Create An Accessible Social Media Policy

Before building a social media training plan, it’s important to have an accessible social media policy.

Many times, especially at larger companies, not all employees are aware of what the current social media policies are and that misunderstanding can actually be discouraging to employees.

If employees are not aware as to their company’s social media policies or what is okay to post, they may worry about the potential repercussions of what they share and consequently not participate in any training or in an employee advocacy program.

Partner up with executives and HR to easily define this and ensure that employees understand it. Here are some great examples of other social policies . 

Make social a part of work culture and onboarding

In a previous article in which I wrote about scaling employee advocacy , I included this quote from a client of ours:

“We’ve stopped calling Advocacy a ‘program’ and are working to simply make it WHAT WE DO . This is part of our culture, and the platform is available to everyone. If you work here, part of what we do is share, discover, and create great content.”

If you want employee advocacy to become part of your work culture, the concept must be consistently instilled into the business mission and company values. 

During team meetings, company town halls, org-wide emails, whatever it may be — make it clear that employee advocacy is core to your brand. 

This also includes the onboarding process for new hires. This is the ideal time for new employees to learn about the social and community culture of your organization.

The inaugural post or photo of a new hire is also a great opportunity for everyone on the platform to share that piece of content out to their networks, giving the hire, themselves, and their company wholesome exposure.

By explaining the value, including training and the tools needed, new employees have an easier time transitioning right in. 

Provide guidance on how to represent the brand

One difference between successful and unsuccessful employee advocacy programs comes down to whether the company allows their employees to be authentic on social — as they should!

Too often organizations want to lockdown commentary and be more guarded with brand representation. 

It’s okay to have some regulations (more on that in the next step), but you don’t want a squad of monotoned employee spammers either. 

Instead, within your training sessions and social policy, make sure to include some guidelines around your brand voice and proper social etiquette. 

In all the years our team has worked in this space, companies who follow this imperative of authenticity have never had an issue with employees representing the brand in the wrong way.

Yes, even pet photos go a long ways for employer branding, especially if an executive posts them (or views them from another company once shared externally).

Explain any compliance and regulations

While you don’t want to stifle authenticity or the personalities of your employees, there may be a need for compliance and regulations to some degree.

Industries vary and depending on what your company does, there may be some requirements. 

By law, you might have to disclose your connection to the company, avoid certain terms, etc. Such instances as this is when your company must include a simple list of rules to follow while using an employee advocacy program. 

Additionally, employee advocacy platforms include options to lockdown certain commentary if needed, can add mandatory company disclosures, specific hashtags, etc.

But even with these admin privileges, you can still allow employees to include their own voice.

Encourage employees to share, do not force it

The one area that must be clear with employee advocacy to leaders and all employees, is that participation is not required.

You cannot force anyone to share to their social media accounts, nor expect that everyone will be involved.

Forcing something on others is not a great way to build authentic ROI on any initiative, and especially on social media where contrived content and insincere voices can be easily identified. 

Employees have the right to choose to share on social media and they take their accounts with them if they move on from your organization. It’s imperative that everyone understands this from day one.

Instead, the training should show employees why their advocacy matters to the company and to them professionally. Show them how their efforts build the company up, help marketing, sales, and recruiting.

But ensure they see how it can impact their career growth and professions as well. 

Employee recognition and achievements

People love to be recognized for their awesome work and achievements. This is especially true for employees when their colleagues, company executives, and the public can see this. 

Give your top advocates, new hires, or employees who are just getting involved with social sharing some praise for their employee advocacy efforts.

This could be awards, spotlight posts on social media accounts, or other opportunities within the company.

By doing this, it can help encourage more employees to get involved, builds a positive work culture, and helps drive more productivity. 

With employee advocacy software, you can gamify the experience and use leaderboards to help drive engagement. 

But, beware of focusing too heavily on gamification as it can adversely affect the authenticity of content by incentivizing winning the leaderboard over the larger objective of employee/er branding.

Final Thoughts

Every employee has their own personal brand, and every company has their own official brand. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all employee advocacy program.

How to run a successful social media workshop: your 7-step plan.

Ready to run an awesome social media workshop? Follow these 7 steps and you’ll have it in the bag. 

1. Figure out the what, why, and who

The key to a successful social media workshop is to have a clearly defined purpose. Before you do anything else, you need to figure out the what, why, and who: 

  • What is the goal of your social media workshop? Think about what you want to achieve. What problem do you want to solve, and what outcomes and deliverables (tangible or otherwise) do you want to end up with?
  • Why is it important to tackle this particular issue? Why, how, and where will it bring value?
  • Who should attend the workshop? Whose ideas, perspectives, and insights do you need? Who should have a say in the matter? Likely candidates for a social media workshop include the social media manager, someone from the content/copywriting team, a rep for the design team, and the person responsible for the overarching social media strategy—but it ultimately depends on the topic of your workshop. 

As you answer these questions, aim to keep your focus narrow. Social media marketing is a vast and multifaceted space, so don’t fall into the trap of trying to tackle multiple things at once. Only with a clear, specific goal can you achieve concrete outcomes. 

2. Get stakeholder buy-in

You’ve scoped out the fundamentals of your social media workshop, and you know who you want on the guest list. Now you need to convince them not only to turn up, but to come engaged, enthused, and ready to get stuck in. 

Think of this step as your value proposition. You want to clearly and succinctly communicate the value of this particular workshop. What’s in it for them? What big wins can they expect, and in what timeframe? How will it help them achieve their goals and/or improve their day-to-day work? 

You can do this by sending a well-crafted email, sharing a brief presentation deck, or via a quick video call. Think about what style of communication your stakeholders will welcome the most; you want their buy-in, after all. 

Whatever approach you choose, just be sure to highlight the value and benefits front and center. 

3. Plan your agenda

Spend ample time drafting, revisiting, and refining your workshop agenda until you’ve got it spot on. Here are our top tips for writing a solid workshop agenda:

  • Incorporate icebreakers to get people relaxed and set the tone. We share our favorite icebreaker activities in this post .
  • Build breaks and buffer time into your agenda. Breaks are crucial for keeping people energized, and buffer time will ensure you’re able to comfortably cover everything without stress.

4. pick your workshop exercises.

The exercises you choose for your social media workshop will depend on what kind of challenge you want to tackle. Whatever the goal of your workshop, you’ll need to incorporate the right exercises and activities to achieve your desired outcomes. 

If you’re not sure how to format your social media workshop, here are two of our favorite exercises to get you started. 

The Lightning Decision Jam (LDJ)

This is AJ&Smart’s signature approach to workshopping, and it’s excellent for solving tricky problems without all the typical back-and-forth and inconclusive discussions. 

In a nutshell, the Lightning Decision Jam:

  • Is a group exercise which takes about 40 minutes in total
  • Offers a clear and structured process for making decisions, fast
  • Is broken down into 9 short exercises, starting with problem definition and ending with solutions and actionable tasks
  • Requires nothing more than Post-it notes, pens, voting dots (stickers or digital), and some background music of your choice

10 for 10 brainstorming exercise

For an even quicker brainstorming exercise, try the 10 for 10 method. This is an extremely lightweight, solution-focused way to generate ideas for pretty much any challenge or scenario. 

In a nutshell, the 10 for 10 exercise:

  • Takes literally 10 minutes!
  • Is broken down into 4 simple steps: Generate, Curate, Vote, and Arrange
  • Turns the topic you want to brainstorm into a “How Might We” question, keeping the group focused on solutions and outcomes
  • Requires just sticky notes, pens, voting dots, and a timer

5. Tools & supporting materials at the ready 

Whether you’re running an online workshop , an in-person session, or a hybrid workshop , you’ll need the right tools to hand. 

For a remote social media marketing workshop, you’ll want a collaborative whiteboard tool like Miro or FigJam . Then, depending on your chosen exercises, you might need pen, paper and/or sticky notes, as well as templates for specific activities.

In terms of supporting materials, prepare anything your participants will need to take part in the workshop. For example, if part of the workshop involves reviewing past social media content, put together a slide deck with screenshots and links. If you want to use the workshop to review your competitors’ social content, have some examples at the ready. 

6. Keep attendees engaged and energized

The best workshop facilitators know how to keep participants engaged and energized throughout. It’s natural that people will get distracted, start to zone out, or grow a bit fidgety, so have some techniques at the ready to recapture their attention. 

  • Shaking things up with a physical activity—for example, instructing everyone to move seats/position 
  • Playing a quickfire game which requires people to think on the spot
  • Putting something unexpected in your slide deck, like an unrelated photo or video
  • Interspersing a few upbeat songs throughout your playlist 

And, as we mentioned already, build breaks into your agenda. Workshopping is thirsty work, so give your participants time to recharge. 

7. End with clear outcomes and action points

The purpose of running a workshop instead of a meeting is to come up with actionable solutions. So, to ensure your social media workshop is a success, leave your participants with concrete outcomes and action points. 

Bear in mind that outcomes and action points doesn’t necessarily mean a finished product or the ultimate solution to your workshop challenge. It can also be the next steps that are required in order to move things forward and help the group progress towards their ideal state.

For example: Let’s say you’re running a workshop to kick-start the creation of a social media style guide. You won’t end the workshop with a fully-fledged style guide, but you’ll have reached a consensus on things like tone of voice and emoji usage. Possible action points for after the workshop could be for the social media manager to draft the “tone of voice” section of the style guide and share it with others for review. 

Every workshop is unique, and so are the outcomes. The most important thing is to make sure that what’s achieved in the workshop is translated into real-world action and impact. 

Follow those 7 steps and you’ve got yourself a productive, effective social media workshop. Woohoo!

The Master Resilience Training Course (MRTC) provides Soldiers with an opportunity to enhance their leadership and effectiveness and to learn how to teach resilience skills to Soldiers, Family members and Department of Army Civilians. The 10-day MRTC includes immersion in core concepts and skills as well as instruction for training others. Each day incorporates a mix of large group sessions, small-group work and exercises to do alone or with a partner.

Students learn the six MRT competencies (self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strengths of character and connection) that have been proved to be critical characteristics of a resilient individual.

MRTC students also learn 14 distinct skills that allow them to develop themselves and others in the six MRT competency areas: self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strengths of character and connection. With these skills, students develop the ability to understand their thoughts, emotions and behaviors, as well as the thoughts, emotions and behaviors of others. They master skills to strengthen relationships through communication strategies and learn how to praise effectively, to respond constructively to positive experiences and to discuss problems effectively.

Interested in Becoming a Master Resilience Trainer?

Here are the requirements to attend the MRTC.

  • Nominees must have more than 12 months remaining in their position (24 for DA Civilians).
  • Enlisted Soldiers must be in grades E-6 through E-8; qualified E-5s may submit an exception-to-policy request.
  • Officers must be in grades O-1 through O-4.
  • Warrant officers must be in grades WO-1 through CW-4.
  • DA Civilians must be in grades GS-7 through GS-13.
  • Nominees must have a valid Army Physical Fitness Test score.

- Active component for six months - Army National Guard/Reserve for one year - Not required for DA Civilians or spouses

  • Nominees must have excellent communication and presentation skills.

Upon completing the course, MRT graduates are expected to:

  • Be the commander’s principal adviser on resilience.
  • Provide and sustain resilience training for the unit.
  • Assist the unit training NCO in incorporating resilience training quarterly.
  • Ensure the implementation of the commander’s training guidance as it relates to resilience training.
  • Provide resilience training for Family members and DA Civilians.
  • Coordinate deployment-cycle resilience training.
  • Train supervisory-level leaders to incorporate resilience skills and techniques into professional and developmental counseling.

Note: MRTs are not authorized to conduct MRT courses that train 8R-certified MRTs or award ASI 8R.
