Movie Review: Stud Life
This movie, stud life, touches upon the stereotypes of butch and femme..
Drama/Romance
Starring: T’Nia Miller, Kyle Treslove, Robyn Kerr
JJ, a wedding photographer, hails from London, England, and identifies as a butch (stud) lesbian. JJ’s best gay friend is Seb, who regularly helps her take photos. One night JJ is out nightclubbing and meets the soon-to-be love of her life, Elle. Sex becomes challenging as JJ likes to ‘make love to a woman, whereas Elle enjoys rough sex. Jealousy rivals Seb and Elle, which poses some issues of its own. There is also a dark secret looming that Elle holds close to her – this is what will test the true love that has engulfed JJ and Elle.
This movie touches upon the stereotypes of butch and femme. The film discusses sex toys and shows discrimination against butches in women’s bathrooms, rough sex, and gay bashing.
Stud life is a good movie. I think the film could have done the face-smacking scene differently. There are different fetishes and different tastes out there for everyone.

“Stud Life” spends some time in the agreeable company of a mega-butch black lesbian and gay white “pretty boy,” London fringe-dwellers perpetually scurrying back from their latest romantic travails to one another’s safe company. Like “Go Fish” 18 years ago, Campbell X’s raffish, seriocomic debut feature is rough-hewn in technical and narrative terms but offers a bracingly uncompromised peek at a subculture that should appeal to (primarily) lesbian audiences. Offshore niche home-format sales should be brisk.
For JJ (T’Nia Miller), the day begins not atypically with her waking up next to best friend Seb (Kyle Treslove), who’s crashed at her place once again — this time evoking an “ewww” response with his morning erection, a breach in decorum they both quickly laugh off. Very little is off limits in their relationship, which extends to a shared business photographing weddings (seemingly only gay ones).
Popular on Variety
On their own, though, each struggles to find a less platonic form of long-term love. JJ grows infatuated with gorgeous femme Elle (Robyn Kerr), but can’t cope when she reveals her envelope-pushing trade, prompting an ugly breakup and subsequent remorse. Seb’s taste for rough trade is sure to invite trouble sooner or later; meanwhile, he fends off an effete, besotted suitor in many-monikered drug dealer Smack Jack aka Perry aka Tristan (Simon Savory). Their eventual coming together feels like pure formulaic contrivance.
Light on story, with nonexistent scene transitions and lazy connective issue in JJ’s YouTube video-journal posts, the pic is often crudely wrought. Yet a certain esprit keeps it ingratiating throughout. The winning principal element here is the lead characters’ credibly lived-in, loyal affection, with thesps Miller and Treslove (who suggests a more androgynous Russell Brand) in perfect synch. Writer-helmer Campbell X is also variously billed as Campbell Ex and just plain Campbell in some materials.

Film Review: Stud Life
British writer/director Campbell X Depicts Urban Queer London’s Stud Life on the Silver Screen
Stud masculinity hit the silver screen with a vengeance in Stud Life, a new feature-length project from the award-winning British filmmaker Campbell X.
The film, which played to sold-out audiences in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and Trinidad, tells the story of a young black stud who’s faced with the “mates before muff” question when she falls in love with Elle, the film’s hot femme lead, played by Robyn Kerr.
T’Nia Miller stars as JJ, a butch lesbian who is as vulnerable as she is fly; Kyle Treslove portrays JJ’s best friend, Seb, a gay white man who struggles with his femininity before finding his own true love. And while the romantic comedy strikes a lighthearted tone as Seb and Elle wrestle for JJ’s attentions, what’s really exciting about Campbell’s film is her decision to feature a black, masculine-of-center protagonist, which attracted a whole new audience demographic. Stud, aggressive, tomboi, butch, and masculine-of-center queers of color flocked to the LGBT film festival screenings of Stud Life , eager to see themselves on the big screen.
“Studs have responded with joy to the film—it is a result of not seeing too many images of themselves looking hot on the big screen. Some have come up to me and said, ‘That was my life up there—you put my life up there.’ They would tweet me back lines from the film,” says Campbell.
A dapper black stud herself, Campbell empathizes with the audience’s desire to see female masculinity represented on screen. “It makes sense. Why would they come, if they’re not seeing themselves? To see the same thing you can see on telly? There are no masculine-of-center people of color in mainstream queer cinema, or even in indie cinema,” she says.
In the U.S., a few African American lesbian filmmakers actually have tackled the challenge of representing stud lesbians on screen. Director Cheryl Dunye launched Strangers Inside back in 2001; the project was a made-for-cable drama about a mother-daughter stud reunion in prison. Dunye’s recent independent film Mommie’s Coming handled the subject of black butch identity by taking a more playful approach.
She cast her dandy self as the Berlin cab driver who transports her protagonists to and fro. Director Dee Rees’s recent feature Pariah also moved African American studs right into the mainstream. “It is mind-blowing, really. It is the first time somebody has made a film with a black lesbian protagonist who has broken through [to mainstream] consciousness,” Campbell says.
With so few studs on the big screen, writer/director Campbell found her inspiration for the film in her community and on the Internet. “The film is inspired by London and its very vibrant multicultural life and where it comes into creative collision with diverse LGBT people. It’s also inspired by all the bois on YouTube, who are inadvertently creating an archive of female masculinity for generations to come,” Campbell says. “Also, there are web series between women that have stud characters on them. They were influential to my film.”
Seasoned by nearly 20 years of making film, Campbell has stakes in breaking the mold of LGBT films, not only by putting masculine women of color in the foreground, but also by putting kink into the limelight of the rom com genre. “My intention when making any film is to tell a good story with lush visuals. I also challenge us as minorities, whether LGBT or [people of color]. I create nuanced, complex characters who have to be true to themselves—in spite of the temptation, led by my own personal politics, to make them perfectly saintlike and politically correct.”
Elle’s admission that she is a dominatrix is met with outrage when JJ first finds out what her lover does for work. Campbell explains, “JJ is conventional. She is not a perfect stud. She has her flaws. Elle accepts her, but [JJ] does not accept Elle. Often this happens when a stud wants to control a femme, through anger or whatever. So I wanted to raise these concerns.”
Campbell’s focus on desire and femininity in Stud Life is also meant to expand the range of LGBT films. “I wanted to show through Elle, who is a powerful femme, that submission is an active process, not a passive one,” she says.
By rejecting a myopic mainstream view of lesbian characters, Campbell knew she would face funding issues, so she took matters into her own hands, creating the full-length feature on a near-zero budget. “Masculine-of-center females do not represent the idealized ‘saleable’ woman—who can be packaged to mainstream audiences of any sexual orientation. She is being erased from our dominant media—LGBT and straight. I am interested in putting anyone who is forced to the margins right back into the center of the frame.”

With its focus on queer character exploration rather than plot, Stud Life ‘s main issue is one of medium. The characters here could’ve inhabited a trendy and relatable E4 dramedy series from the era. As a film, there’s too much character work to comfortably fit and not enough plot to glue it all together.
Stud Life’s lead character is JJ, a black stud lesbian. JJ’s closest friend is a white, effeminate gay man named Seb. Both JJ and Seb long for romantic relationships and search for them online and at local gay clubs. One such club is where JJ first meets Elle, a confident and sexy femme. But as JJ and Elle fall into a relationship, Elle begins to co-opt all of JJ’s time and dislikes JJ’s friendship with Seb. However, their actual breakup comes when Elle reveals she works as a dominatrix for men. Unable to handle this, JJ leaves. However, Seb himself has recently found love and encourages JJ to work things out with Elle.
Stud Life clearly comes from a desire to see representation. JJ’s identity as a black stone butch lesbian gets majority focus in the film. This is great to see. JJ’s identities are not often given onscreen representation. Black leads are still go heavily underrepresented in WLW film. Properly butch leads are rare too. Onscreen depictions of queer women veer so femme that a “butch” character often means little else than a woman with short hair. There’s more to the butch identity than that. The characterization of JJ and these facets of her identities are the most successful part of the film. Not only is JJ likable and extremely cool but she feels very real. The film is also very good at informing and teaching its audiences about these identities. Because JJ feels realistic and cool, it really helps keep these moments from feeling preachy or patronizing.
The film is also great at simultaneously celebrating JJ’s identity while also outlining the negative attention that these identities sometimes get. A woman accosts JJ in a female bathroom because of her gender presentation. She’s also gay bashed in her own neighbourhood. The film does not shy away that existing at the intersection of being black, queer and gender non-conforming isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. But it’s great at balancing these realistic concerns with people who celebrate and supports JJ’s identity. After JJ is accosted in the bathroom, Elle walks in for a sexy piece of flirtation. And when JJ is attacked, her nearby parents come to the rescue and offer her comfort and support.
But all this character focus does make the film feel like a TV pilot. Stud Life struggles with pacing and conflict. It spends nearly half the movie without much conflict and then overcompensates with a break-up scene so dramatic it doesn’t fit the rest of the movie. Individual scenes in Stud Life work extremely well on an on-paper basis. But the film fails to make these strong individual scenes tie together.
JJ and Elle’s relationship starts very romantic before taking a quick dip into concerning territory. Seb warned JJ from the start about Elle. Elle then proves Seb’s concerns right when she tries to come between them as friends and makes disparaging comments about Seb being gay. Neither Elle nor JJ come out looking great during the dramatic breakup scene. JJ’s reaction gets pretty anti-sex work which isn’t great. But Elle tries to prevent JJ leaving and physically hits her. Yet after the breakup, Seb is suddenly on the side of JJ should take Elle back. That’s a switch of opinion on his part and also, he’s wrong. Despite JJ and Elle working things out and ending in what is hopefully a healthier relationship, I’m not sure this couple should be together.
The directing is a problem here. There is a distinctly amateur feel to Stud Life . Part of this is mere budget constraint. Unsurprisingly, they couldn’t secure a huge budget for this black butch lesbian slice of life drama. But while that’s an explanation, it doesn’t change the fact that the film isn’t great to look at or to hear. The sound mixing in Stud Life is one of the weakest aspect. And when it comes to visuals, not all of this is down to lack of budget. The framing of scenes is often weak. Just because budget necessitates using a handheld camera doesn’t mean that effort can’t be put into filling the frame with more interesting or balanced visuals. The camerawork here is just poor. The framing in some scenes was poor in a way that draws attention to itself and away from the actual action of the scene.
My final issue with Stud Life is JJ’s YouTube channel. The film occasionally cuts to vlogs JJ uploads on YouTube where she talks about romance, sex and identity. These vlogs feel like a contrived way for the director speaking through the guise of a character speaking through the guise of a vlog to state opinions she couldn’t fit into the rest of the movie. Some of these vlogs could easily be reworked as dialogue scenes. The other ones could probably just get cut. The vlog where JJ discusses sex toys and disparages people who use non-realistic sex toys doesn’t add anything to the film. If anything, it takes something away. These vlogs are uploaded to a channel named StudLifeMovie. That’s a huge immersion break. It’s clear they’ve actually uploaded these videos to a YouTube account and then screen recorded them and edited them into the film.
Stud Life has a great lead character and passion for character exploration. It really should’ve been a TV series. Despite how solid JJ is as a lead, the directing and plot of the film let her down. Stud Life’s exploration and celebration of marginalized queer identities is strong enough for me not to give this a negative review. But the medium chosen to tell this story and the quality of directing brings down Stud Life’s vibrant, likeable and realistic protagonist.

this movie felt so real, almost like a documentary, i don't know if it's the depiction of ordinary things of life or the acting or the directing, i don't know, but i believed with all my heart these characters were real. now, the internalized mysoginy and homophobia is outstanding and outrageous, i know the movie was written and directed by a woman but some dialogues and actions still left a bitter taste in my mouth, there's nothing worse than a…

The romance felt a bit stale but the movie’s charm lies on how it portrays queerness: messy breakups, silly found family, fags supporting dykes after a hate crime, dysphoria, illicit internet affairs, truly welcome to party city vibes. I’m looking at you “stud chest binding while doing lines on the table with her white twink bestie” scene.

Stud Life is a romantic drama film from 2012 that explores the complexities of love, friendship, and sexual identity. The movie tells the story of JJ (T'Nia Miller), a black lesbian who works as a wedding photographer, and her best friend Seb (Kyle Treslove), a white gay man who is trying to find his place in the world. JJ and Seb have been friends for years and know each other inside out. They share a flat, their aspirations and their conquests; and know how to live life on their own terms. However, when JJ falls for a new client, the androgynous Elle (Robyn Kerr), things get complicated. Elle initially flirts with JJ, but it is unclear whether she is interested in men, women, or both.
As JJ and Elle start seeing each other, JJ becomes increasingly unsure of what she wants out of the relationship. She is attracted to Elle's masculine qualities but also feels like she is losing a part of herself in the process. Elle, on the other hand, is struggling with her own identity and is unsure of how to navigate her attraction to JJ.
Meanwhile, Seb starts dating a new guy, but their relationship is also fraught with difficulties. Seb is still reeling from a painful breakup and is scared of getting too close to someone again. His new boyfriend, K, is also dealing with his own baggage and is not ready for a serious commitment.
As the four friends navigate their respective relationships, they learn about the complexities of love, sexuality, and identity. They learn that love does not always follow a straight line and that it can be messy and confusing. They also learn that friends can be the most important people in their lives and that they need to lean on each other when things get tough.
Stud Life is a beautifully crafted movie that captures the essence of modern love and the complexities of identity. The movie is a welcome addition to the LGBTQ+ movie canon and explores themes that are rarely tackled in mainstream cinema. The film is a testament to the power of independent cinema and the depth of talent that exists in the industry.
The acting in Stud Life is superb, with T'Nia Miller and Kyle Treslove delivering standout performances. Miller, in particular, shines in her role as JJ, bringing depth and nuance to the character. Kerr is also excellent as Elle, capturing the ambiguity and complexity of the character with ease.
The cinematography in Stud Life is stunning, with director Campbell X using bold colors and imaginative camera angles to create a visually striking film. The soundtrack is also a standout, with an eclectic mix of music that perfectly complements the mood of the film.
In conclusion, Stud Life is a must-see film for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ cinema or anyone who appreciates good storytelling. The film is a powerful exploration of love and identity and offers a poignant reminder of the importance of friendship and community. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
Stud Life is a 2013 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8.

3 minutes read. Stud Life is a stunning tribute to Black butches. The debut feature of Campbell X, this film is a story about friendship, love, and community set in modern-day London. JJ (T'Nia Miller) is a photographer whose dapper good looks make her popular with the ladies - resulting in plenty of fun and more than a little trouble.
This movie touches upon the stereotypes of butch and femme. The film discusses sex toys and shows discrimination against butches in women's bathrooms, rough sex, and gay bashing. Stud life is a good movie. I think the film could have done the face-smacking scene differently. There are different fetishes and different tastes out there for ...

Stud Life's exploration and celebration of marginalized queer identities is strong enough for me not to give this a negative review. But the medium chosen to tell this story and the quality of directing brings down Stud Life's vibrant, likeable and realistic protagonist. Overall rating: 5.1/10.
Truly one of the worst films I've ever seen. This has to be the reason why niggas in the UK don't get enough film work, the few that do get the opportunity seem to fuck it up royally. The romance felt a bit stale but the movie's charm lies on how it portrays queerness: messy breakups, silly found family, fags supporting dykes after a hate crime, dysphoria, illicit internet affairs, truly welcome to party city vibes. I'm looking at you "stud chest binding while doing lines on the table with her white twink bestie" scene.
