The metaverse is an emerging concept which embraces three important elements. First, it embraces a social element, i.e. it is not only a virtual space where users spend time (and money) on their own or with a selected few. Rather, the metaverse is intended to resonate with the very social fabric which underpins human society. Once in the metaverse, you and/or your avatar are able to interact humanly by looking into each other’s eyes, perceive body language and maybe even shake hands.
Second, it has a strong virtual narrative where our experiences and ways of social interaction are significantly augmented with persistent virtual content, consumed via VR or AR. Access to the virtual world of the metaverse and haptic interaction therein is enabled by eXtended Reality (XR) devices, and in the interim via today’s screens leveraging WebXR technologies.
Third, it is accelerated through novel technologies, like Web 3.0 and blockchains, digital twins, real-world graphics rendering, artificial intelligence and 5G/6G, just to name a few.
After decades of technology enabling personalization, perhaps now – with the emergence of the metaverse – we can build a native technology that allows us to interact and share realities together with our surroundings. Augmenting our reality while blending it with the digital world underpins a shared reality where people come together instead of apart. Digital sharing via socials caused us sharing less in our real lives. Immersive tech can be the inflection point where we share and socialize more in our real life in a healthier and more sustainable way. We also know that the paradigm shift from “content inside a screen” to “users inside the content” needs to be inclusive of people who can’t do wearables or who can’t do embodied interactions. This calls for new ways of enabling content flow, infrastructure, accessibility that will ultimately redefine our ecosystems and daily activities, work and social lives.

Title: a survey on metaverse: fundamentals, security, and privacy.
Abstract: Metaverse, as an evolving paradigm of the next-generation Internet, aims to build a fully immersive, hyper spatiotemporal, and self-sustaining virtual shared space for humans to play, work, and socialize. Driven by recent advances in emerging technologies such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, metaverse is stepping from science fiction to an upcoming reality. However, severe privacy invasions and security breaches (inherited from underlying technologies or emerged in the new digital ecology) of metaverse can impede its wide deployment. At the same time, a series of fundamental challenges (e.g., scalability and interoperability) can arise in metaverse security provisioning owing to the intrinsic characteristics of metaverse, such as immersive realism, hyper spatiotemporality, sustainability, and heterogeneity. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the fundamentals, security, and privacy of metaverse. Specifically, we first investigate a novel distributed metaverse architecture and its key characteristics with ternary-world interactions. Then, we discuss the security and privacy threats, present the critical challenges of metaverse systems, and review the state-of-the-art countermeasures. Finally, we draw open research directions for building future metaverse systems.

Work-in-Progress—Exploring the Impact of Metaverse Worlds on Cross-Cultural Understanding in International Collaborative Presentations
- Hayashi Masako Tohoku University, Sendai Miyagi 9808576, JAPAN
This work-in-progress paper explores the effectiveness of multimedia, particularly Metaverse worlds, in enhancing cross-cultural understanding among students in international collaborative presentations. Challenges arise from constraints on direct cross-cultural experiences in online conferencing systems. This paper aims to determine if Metaverse worlds deepen crosscultural understanding. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of student evaluations, results highlight Metaverse worlds' efficacy in fostering interactivity, immersion, and realism. Active engagement and interactivity are determined to be pivotal in leveraging the efficacy of Metaverse worlds. By emphasizing immersive technologies' role in cross-cultural education, the study provides insights for instructional design and international exchange initiatives.
