Criminology, Law and Society Ph.D. program

​​ The Ph.D. program in Criminology, Law and Society is ranked #2 in the US News and World Reports rankings. The program focuses on the causes, manifestations, and consequences of crime; the impacts of crime on society; social regulation; the civil justice system; the social and cultural contexts of law; and the interactive effects of law and society. With high-caliber faculty and an interdisciplinary perspective, the program aims to develop students’ theoretical and methodological sophistication to prepare them for faculty positions at major universities and colleges or for research, training, and administrative work in the justice system.   

Program Overview

In this doctoral program, students must pass nine (9) required courses and four (4) electives, all with a grade of B or higher. For a description of the following courses and others, please visit the UCI Course Catalogue .

Students are also required to complete a Second Year Project, pass comprehensive examinations (comps), prepare & defend a dissertation proposal, and prepare & defend a dissertation.

Second Year Project/Master's Thesis

Beginning in their first year, students initiate independent research projects under faculty supervision. Approaches to research vary widely and may include questionnaire and survey analysis, systematic field observation, computer simulation, archival searches, ethnographies, oral histories, and legal analysis. This project is further expanded on and completed during the second year. This Second Year Project is designed to introduce students to developing their own research projects and writing for an academic audience. The report of the Second Year Project should be comparable in scope and format to articles that appear in leading journals within the field of criminology, law and society. Each project is evaluated and approved by the advisor and one other faculty member.

Students may submit the written report of their Second Year Project as a Master's Thesis for an M.A. in Social Ecology. For the Ph.D. degree, however, an M.A. is not required, and most students move directly to the completion of the doctoral requirements.

Comprehensive Exams

The comprehensive examination (comps) is an untimed take-home written exam consisting of two essays, to be completed in the third year of graduate study. The goal of comps is to allow graduate students to demonstrate mastery of major theoretical, substantive, and methodological issues in both criminology and law & society. The examination consists of two sections – criminology, and law & society. Beginning in 2021, students must complete the exam by the first day of classes in the Winter Quarter of their third year (adjusted for any Leaves of Absence), and must pass all sections of the exam by the last day of classes in Winter Quarter of their third year (adjusted for any Leaves of Absence). Students who do not pass one or both sections on the first attempt will retake the failed section(s) in the subsequent quarter. Students are allowed to take the exam twice, but must pass all sections according to this timeline.

Dissertation

During the fourth year of study, students draft and defend a proposal for dissertation research. The proposal is developed under the guidance of a faculty advisor, and clearly presents the research questions, theories, and methods which will inform the doctoral dissertation project. Once students complete the proposal, they must defend the proposal to a committee comprised of the faculty advisor and four other faculty members. Upon approval of the defense, the student will advance to candidacy for the Ph.D. Students generally complete the proposal defense by the end of the fourth year.

Once students have advanced to candidacy, they spend their remaining time at UCI completing data collection and analysis for their dissertation. Following the completion of the written dissertation, students must orally defend their project to a committee comprised of the faculty advisor and two other faculty members. The dissertation defense usually occurs in the fifth or sixth year. Upon passage of the oral defense and approval of the committee, the student has completed all of the requirements of the Ph.D. program.

Asian American Studies

This graduate emphasis is a formal component of graduate studies at the University of California, Irvine, in addition to the fulfillment of requirements towards the Ph.D. or M.F.A. degree in an array of fields in the Schools of Humanities, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, and the Arts. Designed to complement existing graduate degree-granting programs by providing interdisciplinary training in Asian American Studies, this particular specialty is comprised of four courses: two foundation courses introducing theories, methods, and historical and contemporary special topics in Asian American Studies; one elective course in Asian American Studies; and one related elective course in a student’s specific discipline or area of study. The Critical Theory Emphasis (CTE) graduate specialty is the curricular arm of UCI's Critical Theory Institute (CTI). Scholars of Critical Theory explore and develop theoretical models to analyze and critique cultural forms from literature and art to more general systems of information, social relations, and symbolic categories of race, gender and ethnic identity. Law, Society and Culture Emphasis

The Center for Law, Society and Culture sponsors the LSC Emphasis. This concentration is designed a) to instill an intellectual ethic on inter -disciplinarity among participating students early in their training and b) to create trans -disciplinary communities of emerging socio-legal scholars whose intellectual development is enhanced by formal and informal exchange across diverse fields. In the spring of each year, students in their first through third years of graduate study are invited to apply to the Emphasis, which is composed of 4 inter-connected components: 1) a year-long theory and research seminar, with each quarter taught by one faculty member from a different school at UCI; (2) cross-disciplinary mentorship and advising; (3) ongoing professionalization opportunities and responsibilities; and (4) a culminating intellectual project.  Each student is assigned a faculty mentor outside of his or her home department and will meet with that mentor on a monthly basis to discuss the student's ongoing research. Race and Justice Studies Emphasis

Students from any UCI state-supported graduate or professional program, including J.D., Master’s and M.F.A. students, are eligible to apply to the Emphasis in Race and Justice Studies (RJS), housed in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society (CLS). The Race and Justice Studies Emphasis is comprised of four requirements that promote inclusive excellence in graduate training at UCI: (1) A first-year mentorship proseminar offered over three quarters by faculty from across campus whose research and teaching foster inclusive excellence; (2) one RJS-approved course offered under the supervision of the Emphasis; (3) a writing seminar in which a paper developed through the Emphasis will be workshopped and revised toward publication; and (4) a public presentation which translates the student’s RJS-influenced research for an interdisciplinary audience. Research Centers

Students in the Ph.D. program often work with various Research Centers, including the Center for Evidence-Based Corrections , the Center in Law, Society and Culture , the Center for Psychology and Law , the Newkirk Center , the Irvine Lab for the Study of Space and Crime , and the Metropolitan Futures Initiative .

Financial Support

Students in the Ph.D. program have a variety of financial support options. The most common sources of support are Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships.

Research Assistantship. Many students work with faculty on research projects funded by external grants or university monies. As with Teaching Assistants, RAs generally work for up to 20 hours per week and are involved in a wide variety of research activities (e.g., data collection and analysis, article preparation, etc.). Compensation for RAs is roughly equivalent to that for a Teaching Assistant, and covers fees and tuition.

Teaching Assistantship. Ph.D. students in CLS are eligible for 12 quarters of support as a Teaching Assistant (TA), making this the most common means of financial support. TAs work up to 20 hours a week, are responsible for assisting the professor with many common classroom tasks (e.g., creating exams, grading papers, etc.), assist students understand course material and meet course requirements, and experience the opportunity to practice the art of teaching (usually through discussion sections and/or guest lecturing). To maintain their eligibility, students must be in good academic standing and must have a satisfactory record as a Teaching Assistant . Some students may even receive a TAship after this 12-quarter period (subject to CLS and Graduate Divivsion approval). A Teaching Assistantship is not only an important means of financial support (a monthly salary plus fees and tuition coverage), but the work also serves a vital role in training Ph.D. candidates, particularly those who intend to pursue academic careers.

Additional funding is available through student loans, departmental and university fellowships, and outside funding sources. In addition to support during the academic year, students are often able to secure research grants from the Department for the summer. These grants are allotted on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

Graduate Student Housing

A number of housing alternatives are available for graduate students at UCI. Two apartment complexes and a residence hall are available exclusively for graduate students and those with families who wish to live on campus. In addition, there are many off-campus options, including apartments/houses at the beach or apartment complexes just across the street from the university. Due to their affordability and convenience, more than half of our graduate students choose to live on campus.

Among the on-campus options are Verano Place Apartments, Palo Verde Apartments, and Vista del Campo/VdC Norte. Verano Place includes 862 units which are one-, two-, or three-bedroom unfurnished apartments. Palo Verde is designed solely for graduate students and post-doctoral students, and consists of 204 apartments that range from studio to three-bedroom apartments. Vista del Campo is a privately owned and managed apartment community located on the UCI campus, offering furnished apartments to single students who are sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students. A research-oriented and practice-oriented doctoral program..

The doctoral program in Criminology and Justice Policy is student-centered with the goal of preparing students for academic careers as well as careers in research and policy development. Students of this full-time, fully-funded Ph.D. program complete the degree in five years on average. Through our curriculum, students learn the process of research from the ground-up. Our courses teach students to construct viable research questions through qualitative and quantitative analysis, write scholarly research articles, and create technical reports appropriate for policy consumption.

At the Epicenter of Effectiveness

The PhD in Justice, Law & Criminology in the School of Public Affairs draws from the breadth and depth of resources across American University. Our program is rooted in contemporary theory, principles, practices, and research methods in criminology, criminal justice, terrorism and homeland security studies, and legal studies. Students come here not only for the academics, but for the chance to work firsthand with experts in our nation's capital.

Our students organize their programs around two fields of study. Our department offers options in three fields: Justice, Law & Society, and Terrorism & Political Violence. PhD students select one of these as their primary field. Their secondary field may be one of the other two, or they can take courses in Political Methodology or Public Policy from other departments in the School of Public Affairs. Students also have the flexibility to select relevant coursework from other schools at AU, or to take courses in another PhD-granting department at AU or through the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, which includes George Washington University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, University of Maryland, and others.

They dive into research that addresses today's most pressing challenges and produce scholarship with real-world connection and immediate impact.

Each of our doctoral programs reflects values that guide the School of Public Affairs. We encourage engagement and discourse to influence policy makers; formulate critical thinking skills that are crucial to advancing lines of inquiry; cultivate strong leadership skills; prioritize evidence-based reasoning and analytics when addressing societal issues; and challenge the guideposts on equity, fairness, and inclusion to ground students in the institutions of justice and the rule of law. Along the way, we champion truth and self-awareness, as students undertake personal and professional journeys.

The PhD degree in Justice, Law & Criminology requires 36 credit hours of coursework.

All students must complete 12 credits of research design and methodology courses, 12 credits in their primary field of study, and 12 credits in their secondary field of study.

As work on the dissertation project progresses, students register for dissertation credit in order to maintain enrollment. They take Doctoral Continuing Enrollment (JLC-898) and Doctoral Dissertation (JLC-899) after their dissertation proposals are approved.

A minimum grade point average of 3.20 in all coursework is required to remain in good standing and to earn the degree. Full-time status is considered to be nine credit hours per semester.

Students advance to PhD candidacy by successfully completing all required courses, passing the oral qualifier and two written comprehensive exams (one in each of their fields of study), and defending their dissertation proposals. To earn the degree, students must pass a final oral defense of the dissertation.

While previous academic or professional work in justice, law, or criminology is not required, applicants need to demonstrate a serious commitment to a career in this field. The personal statement on reasons for pursuing graduate study in the program is essential, along with the other required application materials .

We accept PhD applicants for full-time study only. Students must be funded either by the School of Public Affairs or by an external sponsoring organization (self-funding is not permitted for newly-admitted doctoral students).

The PhD in Justice, Law & Criminology is a 36-credit-hour program for students who already have a related master’s degree. To estimate the cost of tuition, please see the current cost per credit hour for graduate students.

Unless applicants expect to be funded through a reliable external source, they must request consideration for funding on their application. Upon acceptance into the program, students selected for AU funding are granted a fellowship with full funding for four years of study, contingent on maintaining satisfactory progress each year, with opportunities for further funding available.

As a requirement for the fellowship, students work 20 hours a week with a faculty member. If at all possible, our graduate office will assign students to faculty members with expertise in their areas of research interest.

Students must advance to candidacy by the end of their third year of study to continue receiving funding and to maintain their enrollment.

• The Center on Crime, Race, and Justice (CRJ), comprised of the Corrections and Reentry Lab (CRL), the Crime Prevention Lab (CPL), the Race and Justice Lab (RJL), and the Violence and Justice Research Lab (VJRL), offers the students the opportunity to participate in action-oriented research.
• Students complete a foundations exam, area exam, and publishable paper before defending the dissertation proposal and embarking on the dissertation.
• Students enroll in both a teaching practicum and a writing and publishing practicum.
• Produce research-productive scholars in criminology and criminal justice.
• Emphasize action-oriented work by linking students to local, regional, and national agencies.
• Instill criminological and organizational theoretical knowledge via rigorous coursework.
• Provide the methodological, qualitative, and quantitative tools needed for an array of research, teaching and policy careers.
• Prepare students to teach undergraduate courses independently via a teaching practicum.
• Discuss the rigors of academic publishing and guide students through the process of formulating a research question and submitting a publishable paper through a writing a publishing practicum.

Funding Opportunities

The department has funds to support selected graduate students. A Graduate Assistantship provides a $25,800 annual stipend, tuition waiver and health insurance. Students receiving these assistantships work 20 hours per week. These are awarded on a competitive basis and all applicants are considered. We abide by the resolution of the Council of Graduate Schools that requires that graduate programs give students until April 15th to accept offers.

1 Arizona State University (USA) – PhD in Justice Studies

Continuation of fellowships and a stipend depend upon funding, satisfactory progress towards a degree, and satisfactory performance in re teaching assistantships and research.

Once doctoral students approach the final stages of their program, they can apply for competitive Dissertation Completion Fellowships from the University’s Graduate Education. These fellowships provide an opportunity for students to completely focus on their doctoral dissertations. In case a student’s ultimate goal is a professorial career, they will  be encouraged to participate in University’s Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program after the first year of doctoral studies. Additionally, to support the off-site research and participation in professional meetings and conferences, the University’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) offers competitive research grants and travel funding .

Housed within their School of Law and Social Justice, this program foregrounds issues of social justice in its qualitative and legal methodologies. It focuses on three broad areas of research: urban space and culture, crime and regulation, and critical social policy (including welfare, inequality, and social justice). In addition, the University of Liverpool maintains an active, cross-disciplinary research community that emphasizes collaboration.

Funding details : If you are planning to undertake the PhD program you may need to seek financial support from various sources. There are several different ways of meeting the costs of studying for a PhD at the University of Liverpool: through PhD studentships , which usually cover the cost of research degree and provide a stipend to cover living expenses, self-funding PhD by covering the costs yourself or through other sources, applying for PhD scholarships, grants and bursaries which might cover fees and help with other expenses, and working alongside your PhD.

The University of Liverpool offers a range of PhD scholarships and awards to the UK, the EU and international students. 3 University of Massachusetts, Boston (USA) – PhD in Global Inclusion and Social Development

If you want to focus on global issues, this program centers on human rights and social justice as they intersect with global development, health and wellness, and economic policy. Students are trained in research and policy methods that will improve educational opportunity, community wellness, economic parity, and social opportunities for people across the globe regardless of race, gender, class, or sexual orientation. In addition to core classes, each student selects an additional concentration to further focus their research. Some options include human rights, transnational studies, and nonprofit management. The department also has a close relationship with the medical and public health fields and offers training in disability studies, gerontology, rehabilitation counseling, and vision studies.

Funding details:  Research assistantships are offered on a competitive basis to fulltime students for up to three years of study, with responsibilities over and above course and seminar requirements. Graduate Assistants (GAs) are expected to work 18 hours a week on a grant based within SGISD and projects within the Institute for Community Inclusion, the disability-focused research and training institute. The University makes efforts to match students to projects in their interest area; however, that is not always possible. Students’ responsibilities under assistantships are work obligations, and projects rely on the GAs to complete project work. During assistantships students receive a stipend for their work, which is paid bi-weekly throughout the academic year. Besides the stipends, assistantships also support tuition, educational fees, and health insurance. UMass Boston also administers the Coverdell Fellows Program that offers partial scholarships to returning Peace Corps volunteers.

4 University of British Columbia (Canada) –  PhD in Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice

Part of UBC’s Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, this interdisciplinary program provides a solid basis in feminist, intersectional, and de-colonial theory as well as qualitative research methodologies. The department also supports four focused research networks pulling students from across the university: Critical Racial and Anti-Colonial Studies, Ecologies of Social Difference/Social Justice, Indigenous Pedagogies, and Rethinking Responses and Responsibilities in River Regions. While many of their PhD students are engaged activists, the rigorous theoretical focus of this program makes it a good fit for those who are looking for careers as academic researchers, writers, and teachers.

Funding details : All successful admitted applicants to the PhD program will be considered for financial support and no separate application is necessary for this process. The UBC’s Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) is a major source of funding for PhD students and the Graduate Entrance Scholarships are assigned during the admissions process itself. Through this fellowship, students are provided with financial support of at least $18.200 per year plus tuition for up to four years of their doctoral student. Both domestic and international PhD students can also apply for Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Academic Assistantships. All Canadian students are expected to apply for the SSHRC and CIHR fellowships , while international students are expected to apply for the UBC Affiliated Fellowships. 5 University of Toronto (Canada) – PhD in Social Justice Education

This program provides rigorous scholarly training in both social justice and the field of education, producing scholars who understand how to bring social justice issues into the classroom. Using approaches from history, philosophy, sociology, and political science, student research explores the relationship of education to society and breaks down systemic barriers in education. The department supports two major research centers – Centre for Integrative Anti-Racism Studies and Centre for Media and Culture in Education – and is affiliated with other centers focusing on francophone education, urban schooling, women’s studies, comparative education, and transformative learning.

Funding details:  The University offers base funding packages to students in full time PhD programs. Base packages provide students in the funded cohort a minimum level of support to offset the cost of graduate education. The estimated value of the base funding package for the academic year 2020/21 is at least $24.850, including tuition and incidental fees; however, the average income of students is typically more than the base. 6 Vanderbilt University (Tennessee, USA) – PhD in Community Research and Action

If you are looking for a PhD program that gives you the opportunity to work in either academia or public policy, this program may be a good fit. Students engage in active, community-based research that is oriented towards social justice philosophies. The Community Research and Action department grew out of a community psychology program and represents an interdisciplinary model that combines psychology, community development, organizational change, health policy, and social policy. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, students focus on multi-level problem solving, interdisciplinary perspectives, collaborative and transformative action, and a dynamic theory of social change.

Funding details : All entering students receive financial support covering 18 hours of tuition/semester, a stipend, and health insurance for up to five years in the program in the form of teaching or research assistantships. The funding packages usually require 20 hours a week of graduate assistant work. In some cases, hours are split to 10 hours as teaching assistant duties and 10 hours as research assistant duties working with a faculty member. One of the options is also to work 20 hours per week in one of these areas.  There are also limited funds to support conference-related travel and support.

7 Australian Catholic University – PhD in Social and Political Thought

Part of the University’s Institute for Social Justice, this program asks its students to read and think critically about justice, equality, freedom, democracy, and the public good. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and the faculty and students have backgrounds in a variety of disciplines, including philosophy, political science, sociology, anthropology, and gender studies. While theoretically rigorous, the department encourages students to combine their theoretical research with social justice action. They also have the Sydney School for Critical Social Thought, a yearly 2-week-long symposium featuring public lectures, masterclasses, and discussions with leading academics and public intellectuals in the social justice community.

Funding details : While funding is not guaranteed, there are full scholarships (including living allowances and health coverage) available for domestic, international, and indigenous students. Domestic students can apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) Scholarship, while International students can apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship. The Criminal Justice Policy Review (CJPR), edited by IUP professor Jennifer Gossett, is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal committed to the study of criminal justice policy through quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methodological approaches.

CJPR serves as a bridge between academics, policymakers, and practitioners by publishing sound research that addresses critical issues in crime and justice and examines the implementation and effectiveness of criminal justice policies, programs, and practices. This journal appeals to criminologists, sociologists, political scientists, and other scholars and professionals with an interest in policy and research.

CJPR is published quarterly and accepts articles, essays, research notes, and book reviews. Manuscripts appropriate for submission include:

• Full-length articles that present the findings of original empirical research
• In addition to its regular issues, CJPR also provides a forum for scheduled special issues on notable topics in crime and justice
• Research notes, allowing authors to present early and preliminary results

Before you start your application, you should:

• Develop your own research proposal and project title.
• Find a supervisor by browsing our academics' profiles, and reach out directly to discuss if they are interested in supporting your research.
• Consider how you plan on funding your research and discuss this with your supervisor.

When you submit your application, you must include each of the below required documents:

• A 1,500 word PhD research proposal;
• Copies of the academic transcript and certificate from both your Bachelor's and Master's degrees. If your Master's degree is pending, please provide an interim transcript;
• An up to date academic CV, detailing your education and qualifications; employment history; publications; and any other relevant information.
• You must nominate two academic referees (including one from your most recent institution). Your referees will be contacted directly via the Referee Portal following submission of your application form. You may wish to contact your referees to request they submit your reference in a reasonable timeframe as this forms part of the review process;
• International applicants must additionally provide English Language evidence (e.g IELTS).

How your application is considered

Once a full application (application form along with all supporting documents) has been received by the School, it will then be passed to academic staff for their consideration.

Several factors will be taken into consideration when the decision to offer a place or not is made.  The academic merit of the applicant will be one.  Other important factors will be whether or not the topic chosen is appropriate for study at PhD level; whether the University's library facilities are adequate to support that study; and whether there is a member of staff available who has the expertise to supervise the chosen topic.

Interview requirements

The interview is designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of the broad topic area, the viability of your proposed research and its intellectual contribution, alongside the fit of your project with the supervisory team. You also may be asked to identify and address any potential ethical considerations in relation to your proposed research, and discuss how best to progress your ideas in line with University of Manchester ethics guidance.

The interview panel will consist at minimum of your proposed primary supervisor and an independent interviewer.

The Department of Criminology has specialists in research around five key themes:  

• Fraud, white-collar and organised crime;
• Prisons, punishment and policing;
• Violence, abuse, exploitation and intersectionalities;
• Quantitative measurement and evaluations of crime and deviance;  
• Drug markets, consumption and policy.

Coursework and assessment

For a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), you must successfully complete a period of supervised research and training, the results of which show convincing evidence of your capacity to pursue research and scholarship, and to make an original contribution and substantial addition to knowledge.   

You must prepare a substantial thesis, usually of no more than 80,000 words and satisfy the examiners in an oral examination on the subject of the thesis. The subject is chosen by the PGR but must be approved by the School's Research Committee.

• Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago

Anthropology Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago can receive funding for up to eight years of study, assuming they are in good standing at the university. During that time, they will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus health insurance and a living stipend – which equated to $33,000 for the 2022-2023 school year – and can apply for external fellowships.

Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health at Harvard University (MA)

Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston offers a Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health that aims to provide students with expertise in disease prevention and treatment. This program includes tuition, a stipend and health insurance for five years as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress. International students receive the same benefits. Current research in the school's laboratories involves diseases like AIDS, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, malaria and tuberculosis.

According to Cornell University 's website, all students admitted to the chemical engineering Ph.D. program at the New York school receive a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend. This funding can come from a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship, and full stipends are granted for nine months with the likelihood of additional aid in the summer.

The stipend also carries into a student's fourth year. These doctoral fellows "may be expected to serve" as graduate teaching or research assistants. Students typically complete the mentor-matched program, which includes a full-year internship, in five to seven years.

Ph.D. in computer science at Brown University (RI)

Brown University 's Ph.D. students in computer science have access to "full financial support while completing the degree," plus the option to take classes at nearby schools without incurring additional costs, according to the school's website. In fact, doctoral students in any program at the Rhode Island university are guaranteed five years of financial support, which includes tuition remission, a stipend, health services fees and a subsidy for health insurance.

Ph.D. in computer science at Georgetown University (DC)

Georgetown University 's Ph.D. program in computer science provides scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition at the Washington, D.C., school and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years. Once enrolled in the program, students must complete the Apprenticeship in Teaching Program and ultimately write and defend a full research dissertation in a seminar open to the public.

Ph.D. in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis

Ph.D. students in the computer science or computer engineering program at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support and health insurance. According to the university's website: "As a doctoral candidate, you will also receive a generous stipend to cover living expenses and a new, high-end Apple laptop computer. This support is guaranteed as you continue to make satisfactory progress towards your degree." Doctoral students may also qualify for one of three fellowships.

• Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison

Incoming Ph.D. students at the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin—Madison are guaranteed full funding for the duration of the time that they are expected on campus, according to the university's department of counseling psychology website. Doctoral students also receive a benefits package that includes health insurance. Funding may come from financial aid, fellowships, assistantships and/or traineeships.

Emory University |

Ph.D. in economics at Emory University (GA)

Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding, according to the Georgia university's website. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student's cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.

New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers more than 30 degree programs. Many can be pursued on campus or online. Ph.D. degrees are offered in areas like developmental psychology, educational leadership and childhood education. The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education provides full funding to Ph.D. students as part of a fellowship and research apprenticeship package. This funding includes a living stipend, health insurance and coverage of tuition and fees for up to four years if the student maintains full-time enrollment. This funding includes full-time tuition, a nine-month stipend and subsidized health insurance. Funding comes from some combination of teaching assistantships, traineeships, research assistantships and fellowships. Students in the program can specialize in areas like cognitive and brain sciences, industrial-organizational psychology and social psychology.

University of Notre Dame doctoral students who focus on French and Francophone studies, Iberian and Latin American studies or Italian studies are guaranteed five years of funding. Anyone who completes the Ph.D. degree requirements at the Indiana university within five years will automatically receive a one-year postdoctoral fellowship via the university's 5+1 Program. Fellows will have a teaching load limited to one course per semester.

Ph.D. in social work at Bryn Mawr College (PA)

Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College 's Ph.D. program in social work receive full tuition waivers and "substantial stipends" toward living expenses. The Pennsylvania college's website says: "Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework." The program's cohorts typically include only three or four students each year. According to the college, it awarded the first Ph.D. degree in social work in the U.S. in 1920.

Vanderbilt University |

Ph.D. in special education at Vanderbilt University (TN)

Funding is guaranteed for all admitted doctoral students enrolled in the special education Ph.D. program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. This includes full tuition, a "competitive" monthly stipend and health insurance for up to four years. Students may also be nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships. Areas of focus within the Ph.D. program include high-incidence disabilities and early childhood education.

Ph.D. in theatre and drama at Northwestern University (IL)

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. The program's students receive a five-year full-tuition scholarship plus an annual living stipend. Ph.D students enrolling at this program in fall 2022 will receive a living stipend of at least $36,960 during the 2023-2024 school year. Stipend amounts may change from year to year. UMD Undergraduates Investigate Medical Merits of Common Mushrooms

The gemstone honors students are researching whether common varieties of mushrooms can prevent infections linked to medical implants..

University of Maryland biochemistry major Ranita Chowdhury was working in Chemistry and Biochemistry Assistant Professor Myles Poulin’s lab one day when an unusual shipment arrived.

“The grad students in the lab asked us, ‘Are you cooking in here? Why do you have shiitake mushrooms?’” recalled Chowdhury, who will begin her senior year in the fall.

Besides being a beloved pizza topping, shiitake and other common mushrooms have shown promise in medicine, thanks to their wealth of bioactive compounds. For their four-year research project in the Gemstone Honors Program in the Honors College , Chowdhury and 10 other students are investigating whether mushrooms can help prevent infections in patients with mechanical heart valves, urinary catheters, artificial joints and other surgically implanted devices.

Though medical implants are becoming more advanced, infection is still an inherent risk. Bacteria inadvertently introduced during surgery can form a slimy biofilm on the surface of an implanted medical device. In severe cases, these biofilms can cause life-threatening infections that are resistant to antibiotics. As a result, a follow-up surgery may be needed to remove the device, but even that may not prevent further infection.

“Infections require the implants to be taken out, but that doesn’t guarantee that an infection will not reoccur,” Chowdhury explained. “We want to decrease the cost for the patient as well as the hospital by creating a solution so that these infections don’t occur in the first place.”

The student researchers, dubbed Team Fungi , are working to identify fungal extracts that could act as a sterilant or disinfectant when applied to a medical device, preventing biofilms from forming. To date, no biofilm sterilants have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but it is an active field of research.

In recognition of their novel research, Team Fungi was named one of three winners at the 2023 Gemstone Do Good Showcase and received a University Libraries Award for outstanding Gemstone teams that same year.

While their research is already attracting interest, Team Fungi didn’t initially set out to study biofilms. Inspired by the documentary “Fantastic Fungi” that debuted in 2019, team member Annette Eldo, who will be a senior neuroscience major in the fall, suggested researching whether mushroom extracts could help treat cancer.

“Like most Gemstone teams, we evolved based on what resources are available as well as what is feasible,” Chowdhury said. “We shifted from cancer to bacteria because we saw that it is probably not feasible to cure cancer within three years, but also because our mentor Dr. Poulin’s lab has access to bacterial strains.”

The team has been experimenting with different methods of taking extracts from three common mushroom species: shiitake, turkey tail and shaggy mane. All of their mushrooms are organic and grown in the United States, but they are also widely available in other countries.

“If this were to become an approved sterilant, it can be used worldwide because these are mushrooms that we can find anywhere,” said team member Lili Bao, an incoming senior biological sciences major.

The team plans to test its mushroom extracts against several species of bacteria, including two common sources of infection: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (staph). While their experiments are ongoing, early attempts to inhibit the growth of biofilms have been encouraging.

“Qualitatively looking at the bacterial growth, we’ve seen a decrease in bacteria growth when applying the fungi,” Chowdhury said.

Poulin said Team Fungi has come a long way since freshman year when the team members first entertained the idea of studying biofilms.

“I have been very impressed by the team's motivation and enthusiasm for research,” Poulin said. “They started this project with only a limited knowledge of the medical significance of bacterial biofilms but have worked diligently to learn. It has been a pleasure to watch this team go from having no real research experience to fully developing their own research goals.”

Ultimately, Team Fungi hopes to publish its findings in a peer-reviewed journal. As the students enter their senior year—and final year of Gemstone research—they are reflecting on everything they’ve gained from their experience so far.

“Doing research, especially biochemical research, is very interesting. I love using lab equipment and creating solutions, but I also really enjoy our team culture,” Chowdhury said.

Bao agreed, adding that the leadership aspect of the project is part of what makes Gemstone so unique.

“At the end of the day, it’s our project. Dr. Poulin is helping to guide us, but he’s not the one leading it,” Bao said. “I think the culture that we’ve created is great, and being a part of something fully student-led has been really fulfilling.”

In addition to Chowdhury, Eldo and Bao, students on Team Fungi include biochemistry majors Matthew Kong and Sumangal Myers; biological sciences majors Andrew Cardillo (who is also pursuing a criminology degree), Leah Crowley and Anju Meda; environmental science and policy majors Catalina Gibney and Beyza Gul; and public health science major Ketki Shah.
