A Long Term Strategy for People and the Planet

The Earth is at a tipping point. Here are 3 actions global leaders must take now.

Last updated January 10, 2024

Our planet faces the interconnected crises of rapid climate change and biodiversity loss. We have years, not decades, to address these existential threats.

Global Insights Newsletter

We explore the top sustainability issues and their solutions—in a 5-minute read or less.

In 2023, a new word was born to describe interacting current and future risks with potentially catastrophic consequences: polycrisis.

Another word is about to enter our collective dictionaries: permacrisis. Will this be our fate, or will 2024 be a time for resolution, resilience and recovery? This is a pivotal moment for global leaders attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, where they will develop a long-term strategy to prepare for and respond to these risks.

What we do between now and 2030 will determine whether we slow warming to 1.5° Celsius while also conserving enough land and water to fix biodiversity loss. The good news is there is much that global leaders can do now to keep the polycrisis from becoming a permacrisis.

Two people walk on a trail in the direction of steep mountains with a forest at the base.

3 Things We Must Do To Save The Planet

Solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss won't come from any one sector: they'll come from governments, finance, business and civil society. We can achieve a nature-positive world by 2050 while providing affordable, secure and inclusive access to energy, food and water.

Here are three ways we need to up-end “business as usual” and act boldly to advance conservation.

1. Produce more food on less land.

Today’s version of large-scale agriculture is the biggest source of land conversion, drives deforestation that worsens climate change, uses 70% of the world’s freshwater supply and relies on fertilizer practices that pollute our waters. As the need to feed a billion more people increases, agricultural expansion could devastate habitats, release even more carbon into the atmosphere, and dry up rivers.

Transitioning to Regenerative Food Systems

Our global food system can help us achieve our climate and biodiversity goals.

How to fix it:

Produce food where it’s most likely to thrive, which will use less water and less land.

How we’re taking action right now:

We’re analyzing satellite images and local yield potential to pinpoint where soy farming and cattle ranching can expand without destroying nature. This approach is especially vital in Brazil’s Cerrado region, where half of all natural habitat has already been converted to cropland and pasture. Cooperating with farmers on sustainable practices can help save what’s left of the Cerrado’s rich savanna.

2. Increase clean energy.

Climate change is the single most serious threat facing our planet today. We must reduce carbon emissions to, or below, levels agreed to in the Paris Climate Agreement to prevent catastrophic harm. And with global energy demand expected to increase 56% over the next couple decades, it will be impossible to meet those emissions targets if we stick primarily with traditional fossil fuels.

Benefits of Solar Energy on Former Mine Sites

An affordable path to repurposing former mines into clean energy hubs.

Shift 85% of the world’s energy supply to non-fossil fuel sources and invest in strategies like reforestation that capture carbon dioxide.

We’re championing regulations that allow former mining lands to be repurposed for solar and wind energy. Tens of thousands of acres of degraded mine sites in Nevada’s Great Basin are now available for renewable energy development. By targeting already-disturbed land, new turbines and solar panels won’t need to destroy more natural habitat.

There is much that global leaders can do right now to build a better future for people and the planet. Our newsletter explores potential solutions to our top challenges, all in a five-minute read or less.

Aerial view of a winding river lined with green bushes and surrounded by rocky areas.

3. Get $700 billion to finance nature.

Our economies depend on healthy, supportive natural systems. In fact, around half of the gross world product is dependent on nature. Globally, we're already spending up to $143 billion USD each year on activities that benefit nature, but we need more. A lot more. We need to spend at least $722 billion (and as much as $967 billion) USD every year, putting the nature finance gap at $579-824 billion USD.

A Finance Plan for the Planet

Here's how we get $700 billion each year to reverse the biodiversity crisis.

We need to close the funding gap—and spend at least $700 billion USD on nature every year—to reverse the decline in biodiversity by 2030. Fortunately, this number is only 1% of annual gross global product, or about what the world spends on soft drinks.

Through our Nature Bonds program, we’re taking a holistic approach to leverage debt refinancing for effective, durable conservation and climate action. We work with governments to help them refinance debt and generate new funding to invest in conservation, and in climate mitigation and adaptation measures. Like in Barbados, where we worked with the government, partners from the financial and conservation sectors, and local communities to develop a set of commitments for durable conservation that is tailored to meet the country’s specific needs.

We truly do have the power to build a future in which nature and people can thrive together.

A more sustainable path is possible. But we need to rally individuals, governments, companies and communities around the world to take action with us over the next decade. When we’re at the table with leaders around the world, it gives us great strength to show how many people are with us.

Solutions with Impact

Regenerative Food Systems

Together we can turn one of today’s biggest challenges into our greatest opportunity—a food system that goes beyond sustainable and creates positive growth for communities, economies and the planet.

Nature Bonds Program: Unlocking Funds for Conservation and Climate Action

TNC’s Nature Bonds Program combines debt refinancing, science, planning and policy to help countries protect ecosystems and support communities.

Renewable Energy Transition

We no longer need to choose between abundant energy and a cleaner environment. A renewable energy revolution is happening across the globe.

Earth

The United Nations suggests that climate change is not just the defining issue of our time, but we are also at a defining moment in history. Weather patterns are changing and will threaten food production, and sea levels are rising and could cause catastrophic flooding across the globe. Countries must make drastic actions to avoid a future with irreversible damage to major ecosystems and planetary climate.

But what about individuals? What can we do to pitch in and help save Earth? There are plenty of things you can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint to make a less harmful impact on the environment.

Taking care of Earth is not just a responsibility; it's a necessity. In that spirit, HowStuffWorks has come up with 10 things you can do now to help save the planet.

  • Conserve Water
  • Be Car-conscious
  • Walk, Bike or Take Public Transit
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Give Composting a Try
  • Switch to LEDs
  • Live Energy Wise
  • Eat Sustainable Foods
  • Plant a Tree (or Two)
  • Give Up Plastics

1. Conserve Water

The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth, you're doing something good.

Got a leaky faucet? You might be dripping as much as 90 gallons (340 liters) of water down the drain every day [source: EPA ]. So fix it! It's easy and cheap.

And stop drinking bottled water . Switch to filtered tap water. You'll save a ton of cash and help reduce a ton of plastic waste in the process.

2. Be Car-conscious

If you can, stay off the road two days a week or more. You'll reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds (721 kilograms) per year [source: EPA ]. It's easier than you think. You can combine your errands — hit the school, grocery store and dog daycare in one trip.

And talk to your boss about working remotely on some days. It's a boon for you and your company.

But being car-conscious also means maintaining your car on a regular basis. You can improve your gas mileage by 0.6 percent to 3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure, and be sure to make necessary repairs if your car fails emission [source: EPA ].

3. Walk, Bike or Take Public Transit

man biking to work

Walking and biking are obvious ways to reduce greenhouse gases. Plus you'll get some good cardio and burn some calories while you do it.

If you live in an area that's not walkable , take advantage of your local mass transit if you can. Or carpool. Even one car off on the road makes a difference.

4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

You can help reduce pollution just by putting that soda can in the recycling bin. It really does make a difference. Paper, too. The average American household dumps 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year, most of it junk mail and packaging [source: Brigham Young University ].

But you can also take reusable bags to the grocery, and avoid using disposable plates, spoons, glass, cups and napkins. Contact companies that send you junk mail to get off their mailing lists.

When you order online, see if you can group your packages together for mailing. Buy products that are made of recycled materials. And don't forget to recycle your own paper. It all makes a difference.

5. Give Composting a Try

In 2018, (the last year figures were available) Americans generated 292.4 million tons (265.3 million metric tons) of trash . Only 25 million tons (23 million metric tons) of that was composted. Some was recycled and some was combusted for energy, but half of it — 146 million tons (132 million metric tons) — ended up in the landfill.

Imagine if you could divert more of that to your own compost: It would help reduce the amount of solid waste you produce, as well as what eventually winds up in your local landfill. Plus, compost makes a great natural fertilizer.

6. Switch to LEDs

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) are great. They can last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and they use at least two-thirds less energy, but even CFLS have issues. They're hard to dispose of because they contain mercury.

Enter light-emitting diode , or LED, bulbs. They emit light in a very narrow band wavelength so they're super energy-efficient.

Start replacing your old incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs now (if you haven't already). They do cost more than CFLs and incandescents, but equivalent LED bulbs can last at least 30,000 hours compared to 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs, or 8,000 to 10,000 hours for CFLs.

7. Live Energy Wise

Make your home more energy efficient (and save money). Your home's windows are responsible for 25 to 30 percent of residential heat gain and heat loss. If they're old and inefficient, consider replacing them.

Also be sure your home has proper insulation. Insulation is measured in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value — the higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. The amount of insulation your home needs depends on the climate, type of HVAC system, and where you're adding the insulation.

Smaller things you can do right away include replacing your air filter regularly so your HVAC system doesn't have to work overtime. Keep your window coverings (e.g., curtains or blinds) closed when it's extremely hot and cold outside.

You can also consider installing a programmable thermostat like Nest so your system isn't running (and wasting energy) when you're not home.

8. Eat Sustainable Foods

Today, large-scale food production accounts for as much as 25 percent of the greenhouse emissions . So how do you eat sustainably? Choosing food from farmers that aim to conserve the natural resources and have as little impact on the land as possible.

But even buying as much as you can from local farmers makes a difference. Eating more whole grains, vegetables, fruits and nuts, and less red meats and processed foods does too. You can also try growing your own fruits and vegetables. Grow a garden !

9. Plant a Tree (or Two)

The 2023 United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report found that things are worse now than ever before. Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and most countries are not reducing carbon emissions.

But there is a natural way to combat climate change: Plant a tree.

Plants naturally absorb carbon from the air. One young tree can absorb CO2 at a rate of 13 pounds (5 kilograms) per tree . Every. Single. Year.

And that's just an itty bitty baby tree. Once that tree reaches about 10 years old, it's at its most productive stage of carbon storage. Then it can absorb 48 pounds (21 kilograms) of CO2 per year.

Trees also remove all other kinds of junk from the air, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and small particles . So go ahead, plant a tree. It's good for everybody.

group planting tree

10. Give Up Plastics

The statistics are shocking: People around the world buy 1 million plastic drinking bottles every minute , and use up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags every year.

Humans are addicted to plastic, and hardly any of it — about 9 percent — gets recycled. A staggering 68 to 219 million tons (75 to 199 million metric tons) of plastic is currently in our oceans.

Break the cycle . Stop buying bottled water. Say no to plastic shopping bags and use cloth bags instead. Don't use plastic straws . Drink from a reuseable cup instead of a plastic one. Avoiding plastic can divert a ton of waste from the oceans and landfill.

This story is part of Covering Climate Now, a global collaboration of more than 250 news outlets to strengthen coverage of the climate story.

For Earth Day, Try These Green Classroom Activities (Downloadable)

  • Share article

Earth Day is April 22 in the United States and the day the spring equinox occurs in some parts of the world. It’s a day to reflect on the work being done to raise awareness of climate change and the need to protect natural resources for future generations. Protecting the earth can feel like an enormous, distant undertaking to young people. To help them understand that they can play a role by focusing on their backyards or school yards, educators can scale those feelings of enormity to manageable activities that make a difference.

We collected simple ideas for teachers and students to educate, empower, and build a connection with nature so that they may be inspired to respect it and protect it. Classrooms can be the perfect greenhouse to grow future stewards of the environment.

Speech On Save Earth Save Life - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

  • Speech on Save Earth Save Life -

Earth is the only known planet in the universe that has life. The earth has provided various natural resources for the existence of life. By utilizing these resources, all living things can survive. "Save Earth" is an advertising campaign that shows the importance of Mother Earth. It teaches us how saving the planet can help not only humans but also other creatures.

10 Line Speech on Save Earth Save Life

Short speech on save earth save life, long speech on save earth save life.

Speech On Save Earth Save Life - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Earth is our only home, and we should do everything to protect it.

Climate change and other environmental problems threaten all life on the planet.

Deforestation and pollution are leading to the loss of biodiversity, which is essential for the survival of all species.

The actions we take today will determine the fate of the Earth for generations to come.

Simple changes such as reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy, and recycling can significantly impact us.

Protecting natural habitats and wildlife is crucial for maintaining the ecosystem's delicate balance.

We must work together as a society to address the issues endangering our planet.

Governments, corporations, and individuals all have a vital role to play in protecting the environment.

Investing in clean energy, such as solar and wind power, is essential to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

It's always possible to start making a difference. Let's work together to save the Earth and secure a bright future for all life.

A warm welcome to everyone. Today I will be talking about the importance of saving the earth.

Earth: Most Precious

The earth is the most precious thing in this universe; it has oxygen and water, which are essential for life. The earth's natural resources are being depleted day by day due to various wrong practices of people. Due to the lack of a favorable environment, different forest animals have become extinct. The incidence of various types of pollution, global warming, and other environmental problems is increasing day by day. It is very necessary to stop all bad practices to reduce the negative impact of the same. Earth Day on April 22 every year is celebrated to raise awareness of people all over the world. Every year it is observed how much people care about the earth's natural environment.

Our earth gets nothing in return from us but demands to receive it for the continuation of healthy life on earth. We are not alone on earth. Many unknown creatures inhabit the earth. So we should not be selfish and think of all life on earth. We must reduce the amount of waste, plastic, paper, wood, etc., to protect the earth and the environment. To reduce waste, we should develop habits of reusing and recycling things.

A warm welcome to everyone present here. Today, in my speech, I would like to tell you about the topic "save earth, save life" . To save life on this earth, you must first save the world.

Earth and its Resources

The earth and its resources make life possible. It is impossible to imagine our life without these resources. Life cannot function without the sun, air, plants, and water. But if we don't save the planet now, this will soon become our reality. The resources that the earth gives us are limited. Those are countless blessings. Humans have become selfish and are rapidly exploiting the Earth's resources. We must protect them to save our lives. This is because humans and all living things depend on the earth for survival.

Destruction of Earth’s Resources

Development is progressing rapidly, making people's lives more convenient. But that doesn't give humans the power to corrupt the Earth. Waste is dumped into rivers and other bodies of water, affecting aquatic life. Technology has also improved, and the radiation levels in the air are so high that they affect birds. Some migratory birds forget their way. Trees are cut down, and forests are restricted, making it difficult for wildlife and birds to survive.

Initiatives to be Taken

If we don't protect nature now, only we and future generations will suffer. Our survival is impossible. By destroying nature, we influence our lives. Development is important in today's world, but nature is much more important. Evolutionary logic does not exist if people do not live to use it. We all must participate in volunteer activities to maintain a clean and green environment in our communities. We should recycle without throwing garbage away. We should not forget to schedule regular maintenance for your car.

We must Encourage people to avoid using polyethene and other plastic products. We must bring a cloth bag when we go to the grocery store. We must make it a point to encourage others to save water themselves. Although it is our responsibility to protect the earth we live on, we tend to be selfish and do things that further pollute the environment.

As we are the most evolved species in the environment, it must be understood that Earth is the only planet that supports life. So if Earth is in danger, moving to another planet for safety is not an option. So it's important to use what we have sustainably. Our approach not only saves the planet, but it also saves our lives. Moreover, our future generations will be given a healthy living environment.

Now is the time. It is not logical to take nature for granted. The health of our planet depends significantly on the small actions of humans. If possible, we must take a walk to the neighborhood market. We should carpool with a friend or colleague to get to work. We must be kind to all living things. Most importantly, plant at least one tree daily. If we do not save mother earth, we will all be in great pain.

Warning: this episode contains strong language.

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.

A large crowd of people in a chaotic scene. Some are wearing police uniforms, other are wearing yellow vests and hard hats.

Background reading

As crews cleared the remnants of an encampment at U.C.L.A., students and faculty members wondered how the university could have handled protests over the war in Gaza so badly .

Biden denounced violence on campus , breaking his silence after a rash of arrests.

A deep dive into one of science’s great unknowns: Extraterrestrial life

Lisa Kaltenegger’s “Alien Earths” describes intriguing and potentially habitable worlds that have only recently been discovered around distant stars.

presentation on save earth save life

Of all the unknowns in science, the greatest may be extraterrestrial life. Despite stunning advances in astronomy and planetary science, alien life forms — whether microbial and slimy, animated and bounding around, or highly technological and spacefaring — remain conjectural. That doesn’t mean they aren’t a worthy subject to write a book about.

Lisa Kaltenegger proves that with “Alien Earths,” which explains for lay audiences the young field of astrobiology and describes intriguing and potentially habitable worlds that have only recently been discovered around distant stars. This is a science book through and through, and will disappoint anyone who wants to hear that the aliens are already here, secretly zipping around.

“So far, despite wild claims to the contrary, we have not found any definitive proof of life on other planets,” Kaltenegger, an astrophysicist at Cornell University, writes in her introduction.

What she can report is that astronomers now know that the universe is jammed to the rafters with planets. Although most are not Earth-like (something we know just from scanning our own solar system), many newly discovered planets are close to Earth in size and orbit their stars in what scientists consider the habitable zone. In the near future, employing current and planned telescopes, astronomers could detect signs (“biosignatures”) of extraterrestrial life by studying the atmospheres of those planets.

That would be a tremendous discovery. It might generate robust debate about whether such biosignatures were truly signed by living things. And it wouldn’t tell us about extraterrestrial intelligence. When people ask, “Are we alone?” I don’t think they’re wondering if there is algae on some distant world.

Kaltenegger wisely avoids litigating the topic of UFOs (or UAPs — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, as the Pentagon calls them ), which in recent years has enjoyed a rebound in public interest, fueled in part by unexplained sightings by military pilots. (The claim that strange things seen in the sky are spacecraft from another world is a leap of reasoning lacking the safety net of evidence and logic. Don’t get me started .)

Kaltenegger’s skepticism about alien visitors is appropriate given her status as the founder and director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell. She cites Sagan repeatedly as an inspiration.

Sagan was the most influential and popular promoter of the theory that the universe is rife with intelligent life. He estimated that our galaxy alone could have a million civilizations. But, like Kaltenegger, his pole star was science, and he spent his career throwing his body in front of UFO conjectures and pseudoscience more generally. To his dying day in 1996, Sagan acknowledged that we still did not know what was out there.

Like Sagan, Kaltenegger is a science popularizer. She approaches her subject with the air of someone who does not want to scare off readers averse to books that get too technical, too down in the weeds of astronomy, planetary science or biology.

Some of the text reads like a very basic primer. It includes a tour of the solar system that explains how the sun works and introduces us to Mercury, then Venus and onward to Neptune, the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. As a space nerd, I got a bit fidgety.

But hold on: Kaltenegger kept surprising me with nuggets about science and nature. She seems to know a little bit about everything, which is probably required for an astrobiologist.

Among those surprising takeaways:

  • Earth was not always a blue marble. Billions of years ago, Earth’s continents had rusted, and “may have looked like a large, wet Mars, with red continents separated by blue oceans.”
  • When the moon formed more than 4 billion years ago after Earth slammed into a Mars-sized object, the moon was more than 10 times as close to Earth as it is today, a huge object in the sky, its face blackened by cooling lava, with red veins of hot lava breaking through to the surface. That’s a much scarier satellite than the one in “Goodnight Moon.”
  • The mountains on Saturn’s moon Titan, which has such a dense atmosphere that “if you strapped wings to your arms, you could fly,” are named after the fictional world of Middle-earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

She meticulously outlines what we actually know about planets, their habitability and the evolution of life on Earth — which, as she points out, took its jolly time to produce anything as elaborate as a clam, much less a space-faring technological species.

(She can also attest that the evolution of human intelligence is incomplete: She describes the maelstrom of sexism that she encountered as a young female scientist in a field dominated by men, some not fully emerged from the Stone Age. “How many brilliant ideas and discoveries have already been lost because gifted young women had to use most of their energy to fight to be even allowed to do research?” she asks.)

There is an obvious reason to assume we are not the only intelligent civilization in the universe: It’s a big universe. What happened here could, in theory, happen elsewhere. Biology is built upon chemistry, and the chemistry of the universe today is fundamentally congenial to life.

To my ear, Kaltenegger sounds far less optimistic than Sagan about the likelihood that our galaxy abounds with intelligent life. Complex life doesn’t emerge instantly when you add water to dirt. “Alien Earths” walks us through the fundamentals of what life is. This takes us back to the beginning of time: the Big Bang that created a hot young cosmos made of hydrogen and helium and not much else. Stars ignited, cooked up heavier elements in their cores, and then exploded, spewing material into deep space. The vast clouds of gas and dust, now laden with a variety of elements, condensed into new stars and planetary systems. We know that on at least one planet, the third rock from its parent star, life — chemistry in its most interesting form — took hold and evolved.

And then, after about 3 billion years, there were forms most beautiful: clams, jellyfish, worms. Eventually trees, flowers, dinosaurs. Furry critters. Astrophysicists. Readers.

That, at least, is the scientific origin story, one that Kaltenegger explains patiently and clearly. There is nothing supernatural about this story — but if it doesn’t blow your mind just a little bit, I don’t know what will.

Chris Pine had negative $400 in his bank account before his 'Princess Diaries 2' payday changed his life

  • Chris Pine said that "The Princess Diaries 2" was a major turning point in his career.
  • The actor said that he had overdrafted his bank account before learning he would be paid $65,000.
  • Pine said that he'll never forget learning that he had booked the role.

Insider Today

If you would describe "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" as an "earth-shattering," life-changing film, you're not alone — Chris Pine would say the same, but for likely different reasons.

In a preview clip for "Sunday Today with Willie Geist," Pine spoke about how his $65,000 payday from the film helped him turn around his finances.

"I was on my little Verizon tiny little flip phone, and I got a call from my agents that I booked the job," Pine said. "I pulled over onto the side of the freeway and they said, 'You're getting paid $65,000,' and it was like they had just told me that I'd made $50 million."

Related stories

"It was absolutely earth-shattering," he added.

The 2004 film is a sequel to "The Princess Diaries," which stars Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a geeky teen who learns that she's actually the heir to a small European kingdom run by her estranged grandmother, Queen Clarice (Julie Andrews). In the sequel, Mia has to find a suitor within a month so that she can assume the throne. Pine plays one of her love interests. With a Shonda Rhimes -penned screenplay, it's delightful — and if we're lucky, maybe we'll get a "Princess Diaries 3."

Pine told Geist in the preview clip that he felt like booking the film represented the moment when he truly "started working." Prior to that, he had done some commercials and had a spot on the medical drama "ER." And while the $65,000 payday only turned out to be "about $15,000" after various deductions in the end, it was significant for him at the time.

"I had an overdraft in my bank account, it was like $400 over, I was gonna have to ask my parents for money, and I got that $65,000 and I just remembered distinctly knowing in that moment that my life had changed somehow," he said.

"That lasted no time at all, and I owed my parents rent money. But that is a wild feeling. I'll never forget that," he continued..
