Every year on September 16, International Ozone Day is celebrated to draw attention to the harmful effects of ozone depletion and to highlight the importance of the ozone layer. This day is a reminder of the need to protect the ozone layer. It also highlights the need for more effective action. Several reports claim that the already affected ozone layer will continue to be affected for 50 to 100 years or more, which could worsen the human condition in the future. There are many ways to celebrate World Ozone Day, and one of them is to educate people about the benefits of protecting the ozone layer.

Every year on September 16, we monitor the world's ozone layer and disseminate information about it.

The United Nations General Assembly declared this day as World Ozone Day.

Ozone is made up of three oxygen atoms and exists in the stratosphere.

It protects us from the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can be fatal to live organisms.

These rays can cause serious injuries such as cancer if the ozone is weakened.

However, scientists have found several holes in it, which is not a good sign.

This is due to environmental deterioration and rising temperatures.

Human activities that harm the environment should be monitored regularly.

Increased vehicle use, heating and cooling, and deforestation, even over short distances, are just a few factors contributing to ozone depletion.

Planting trees and using sustainable products protects the ozone layer.

Ozone Day is a day established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer. Also on this day, they talk about harmful substances that threaten the condition of the ozone layer. The United Nations General Assembly designated September 16 as Ozone Day because it signed the Montreal Protocol for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1987.

Every year, World Ozone Day for the preservation of the ozone layer is celebrated with a unique theme. This theme is presented by the United Nations and is the basis of numerous events, debates and celebrations around the world. This year's theme for ozone day 2022 was "Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth".

The theme of World Ozone Day 2022 represents the need to work together to overcome global crises such as climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer.

Ozone Layer Day is considered an important annual event. Many prominent global organisations gathered on this day to talk about the need to protect the ozone layer. Depletion of the ozone layer poses a serious threat to existing life on Earth. As such, events such as Ozone Day highlight global cooperation to eliminate substances and human activities that threaten the ozone layer.

The main purpose of celebrating World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness to people about the depletion of the ozone layer and to find possible solutions to save it. First, it is important to understand what the ozone layer is and why it is so important to human life. It contains high concentrations of ozone (O3) in different parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important for protecting human life because it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth from the sun. Plants cannot live or grow in strong UV light, and plankton cannot be food for most marine life. A weakening of the ozone layer will make people more vulnerable to skin cancer, cataracts and compromised immune systems.

However, there is an important point we need to keep in mind. Ozone can either protect the Earth or harm it. For example, if there is an ozone layer in the atmosphere's stratosphere, it acts as a protective barrier. However, when ozone is present in the troposphere (about 10 km above the Earth's surface), it is harmful. In the troposphere, it is a pollutant that can damage lung tissue and plants. Most of the ozone remains in the stratosphere, where it acts as a shield and protects the earth's surface from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 as World Ozone Layer Preservation Day to protect the ozone layer. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on substances that use up the Ozone Layer turned into signed, a global conference used to shield the ozone layer. It is designed to protect the Earth's ozone layer by stopping the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and reducing their concentrations in the atmosphere.

The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful environmental agreement signed in 1987. It established a mandatory schedule for phasing out ozone-depleting substances.

Governments of all countries take necessary steps to protect the ozone layer, but did you know that they can also take several other steps to protect the ozone layer? For example, it is said to minimise vehicle use. You may want to avoid using some cleaning products that are harmful to both you and the environment. What many people don't realise is that many cleaning products on the market today also contain caustics and solvents, and these harmful substances can be replaced with products that are not environmentally toxic, such as bicarbonate or vinegar. There are a few more things we can do to protect the ozone layer.

As responsible citizens, all we can do is educate people on this serious topic. We should share them with our friends, family and followers. It's a wonderful and inspiring job for us to do. One person doing something and another person doing it all add up to a big change.

Ozone Day is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol. This milestone led to a collaboration between 24 countries to protect the ozone layer and fight substances that threaten it. On September 16, 2009, the Montreal Protocol became one of the first treaties to receive universal ratification.

There are few global agreements as successful as the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.  Today, on World Ozone Day, we celebrate 35 years of this convention, which was the first step in fixing the hole in the planet’s ozone layer.   Gases used in aerosols and cooling appliances were causing this hole.  Under the convention’s Montreal Protocol, governments, scientists and industry cooperated and have so far replaced 99 per cent of these gases.  The ozone layer is now healing, safeguarding human and ecosystem health.   But the work of the Montreal Protocol is not over.  Through the Protocol’s Kigali Amendment, the international community is finding alternatives for coolants that contribute to the growing menace of climate disruption.  If fully implemented, the Kigali Amendment can prevent 0.4 degrees Celsius of global warming.  I congratulate the 100 Parties that have been leading by example.   As we look ahead to global recovery from the social and economic devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we must commit to building stronger and more resilient societies.  It is imperative that we put our efforts and investments into tackling climate change and protecting nature and the ecosystems that sustain us.   The ozone treaties stand out as inspiring examples that show that, where political will prevails, there is little limit to what we can achieve in common cause.  Let us take encouragement from how we have worked together to preserve the ozone layer and apply the same will to healing the planet and forging a brighter and more equitable future for all humanity.   ***** Peu d’accords mondiaux ont permis de remporter autant de succès que la Convention de Vienne pour la protection de la couche d’ozone. Aujourd’hui, en cette Journée internationale de la protection de la couche d’ozone, nous célébrons les 35 ans de cette convention, qui a été la première étape d’un processus visant à réparer le trou dans la couche d’ozone de la planète.   Ce trou, ce sont les gaz employés dans les aérosols et les appareils de refroidissement qui en sont à l’origine. En application du Protocole de Montréal se rapportant à la Convention, les gouvernements, les scientifiques et l’industrie ont coopéré et ont, à ce jour, remplacé 99 % de ces gaz. La couche d’ozone est en voie de cicatrisation, préservant ainsi la santé des êtres humains et de l’écosystème.   Pour autant, le travail au titre du Protocole de Montréal n’est pas terminé. Je félicite les 100 Parties qui ont montré l’exemple à cet égard.   Dans la perspective de la reprise mondiale après les ravages sociaux et économiques provoqués par la pandémie de COVID-19, nous devons nous engager à construire des sociétés plus fortes et plus résilientes. Il est impératif que nous consacrions nos efforts et nos investissements à la lutte contre les changements climatiques et à la protection de la nature et des écosystèmes qui nous font vivre.   Les traités sur l’ozone sont des sources d’inspiration qui montrent qu’en présence d’une volonté politique, il n’y a guère de limites à ce que nous pouvons accomplir pour une cause commune. Inspirons-nous de la manière dont nous avons travaillé ensemble pour préserver la couche d’ozone et appliquons cette même volonté à la guérison de la planète et à l’édification d’un avenir plus brillant et plus équitable pour l’humanité dans son ensemble.

Message on international day for the preservation of the ozone layer, 16 september 2023.

The international treaties to protect the ozone layer have made a dramatic and measurable difference to protecting people and planet. They show the power of multilateralism. And they should inspire hope that, together, we can avert the worst of climate change and build a sustainable and resilient world. 

Limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius is still possible if we immediately and drastically accelerate climate action. I have proposed a Climate Solidarity Pact and an Acceleration Agenda to help achieve this. I urge all leaders to work together to put them into effect – and to support these efforts by getting behind the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and limiting planet-heating hydrofluorocarbons.

Fully ratifying and implementing the Kigali Amendment could avoid up to 0.5°C of warming by 2100. Combining the transition away from planet-heating gases with energy efficiency measures in cooling equipment could double this figure.

I call on all countries to ratify the Amendment. And I urge governments, along with business leaders, civil society, academia, youth groups, local communities, and others, to intensify efforts to bring about real change, and to ensure developing countries have the support they need to do so.

Let’s harness the spirit of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol to build a world where humans, nature and the planet thrive together.

World Ozone Day is observed on September 16, every year. It is celebrated to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. On this day, people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol to join the talks and seminars. A number of commonly used chemicals have been found to be extremely damaging to the ozone layer.

Life on Earth would not be possible without sunlight. But the energy emanating from the sun would be too much for life on Earth to thrive were it not for the ozone layer. This stratospheric layer shields Earth from most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.

World Ozone Day: History

On December 19, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16 the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date, in 1987, on which the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.

On September 16, 1987, the United Nations and 45 other countries signed the Montreal Protocol, on substances that deplete the Ozone layer. Every year, this day is celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer.

World Ozone Day: Theme

“Ozone for life” is the slogan for World Ozone Day 2020. This year, we celebrate 35 years of global ozone layer protection.

What is the Ozone layer?

The Ozone layer is a piece of the atmosphere that has high ozone concentrations. Ozone is a gas that is made of three oxygen atoms O3. Depending on where the ozone layer is, it can either harm life or protect life on Earth.

This year’s theme is “A Healthy Atmosphere-the Future We Desire.” Since 1995, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer has been observed on September 16th. The United Nations General Assembly chose this date in its resolution to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987. The ozone layer is a natural part of our atmosphere. It acts as a sun screen by blocking the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Certain chemicals, such as CFCs, HCFCs, and halons, have been shown to deplete the ozone layer. These can cause holes to form in the layer and allow more UV rays to reach the earth’s surface. As a result of ozone depletion, the earth’s temperature will rise, glaciers will melt, cancerous diseases will spread, ocean levels will rise, and many other effects will occur.

Our Queen Azhi Jetsun Pema, Bhutan’s ozone diplomat, is still working hard to ensure that the ozone layer is well protected. As a result, in order to fulfil Her Majesty’s dream of protecting the ozone layer, there are numerous and simple ways in which we can save our ozone layer. Avoid purchasing and using CFC-containing aerosols and sprays. Avoid the use of ozone-depleting fire extinguishers. Choose a CFC-free refrigerator or air conditioner. Use alternative modes of transportation such as buses, bicycles, or simply walking or carpooling. Follow the 4Rs policy at home and school: reduce, reuse, refuse, and recycle. Purchase energy-saving devices and bulbs.

We can all do our part to protect the environment. Before we demand that politicians implement policies to protect the ozone layer, let us start doing something for the environment ourselves.

Finally, let us make the well-known phrase “Any long journey begins with a first step” a part of our daily lives as we work to create a sustainable planet.

Good morning, everyone, today on the occasion of World Ozone Day , I would like to pay my gratitude to my teachers, seniors, and friends who have given me a chance to present my views on this important topic. Do you know, why we celebrate ozone day on September 16 every year? What is the importance of this day? Well, the main purpose to celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. First, it is important to have an idea about what the ozone layer is and why it is so important for human life. The ozone layer or we can say ozone shield is a region of Earth’s stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a high amount of concentration of ozone (O 3 ) in other parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important to protect human life, as it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun. Without the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, life on Earth would be challenging. Plants cannot able to live and grow in heavy ultraviolet radiation, nor can the plankton serve as food for most of the ocean life. Because of the weakening of the Ozone Layer shield, humans would be more susceptible to skin cancer, cataracts, and impaired immune systems.

I am pleased to confirm the theme for this year’s World Ozone Day on 16 September.  It is:

Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change

This year’s theme aims to highlight and reiterate the positive impact of the Montreal Protocol on ozone layer recovery and reducing climate change, especially through the Kigali Amendment, which phases down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a group of strong greenhouse gases.

With universal ratification and full implementation of the Kigali Amendment, the avoided warming by 2100 is estimated to be up to 0.5º C. Combined with energy efficiency measures while phasing down HFCs, these gains could potentially double.

Our planet is heating up. Average temperatures are soaring and with it the demand for cooling. This could also increase the amount of HFCs being used and emitted. Universal ratification and implementation of the Amendment to phase down HFCs from cooling systems and make them more sustainable is a critical climate warming mitigation tool. 

With the theme visualized in the posters, we are inviting all parties to join the celebration of World Ozone Day and use the assets created to raise awareness among the public on the important work of the Montreal Protocol to safeguard us and the planet.

As always, the World Ozone Day theme and taglines are available in all the six official UN languages on the WOD 2023 website .

• In December, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly- UNGA proclaimed September 16 as World Ozone Day.
• According to the UN, the Montreal Protocol has led to the phase-out of 99% of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators, air-conditioners and many other products.

Global Conventions to Protect Ozone Layers

• It prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer.
• The Vienna Convention provided the framework necessary to create regulatory measures in the form of the Montreal Protocol.
• Its purpose is to regulate the production, consumption, and emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs).
• The parties to the Protocol meet once a year to make decisions aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the agreement. These include adjusting or amending the Protocol, which has been done six times since its creation.
• The most recent amendment, the Kigali Amendment, called for the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in 2016.
• According to the amendment, the signing countries are expected to decrease the manufacture and usage of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by about 80-85% from their baselines until 2045.

Biden's Holocaust memorial speech holds key to his future as protests, antisemitism rage

WASHINGTON — Seven months after Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust, President Joe Biden will be tasked with delivering one of the most high-stakes, closely watched speeches when he addresses the Holocaust memorial ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

His remarks also fall squarely seven months from an Election Day where Biden is trying put together a coalition of young, Black, Muslim and progressive voters that sent him to the White House. But many no longer see eye-to eye with his stance in the Israel-Hamas war.

With Biden at the Holocaust commemoration will be Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana who dashed for Columbia University two weeks ago as anti-Gaza war protests and record antisemitism spiked across college campuses. President Biden’s charge will be two-fold: Assuage the fears of Jewish American voters and offer reassurance to them while acknowledging the sense of betrayal felt by his base as he continues to support Israel with military aid.

In his address, Biden will talk about the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that led to the “deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust” and a surge in antisemitism , White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

The president will speak to the “horrors of October 7th,” and how “we've seen an alarming rise in antisemitism in the US and our cities, our communities, and our on our campuses,” Jean-Pierre said.

The speech will be delivered during the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Annual Days of Remembrance ceremony, which occurs the day after Israel's Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate the six million Jews murdered by Nazis during World War II.

On Oct. 7, Hamas killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and took about 250 more as hostages. In the seven months since , Israel's retaliatory attacks have killed more than 34,000 Palestinians , according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

The war has also unleashed a humanitarian crisis. About 1.1 million people in Gaza – half of the population – have completely exhausted their food supplies and coping capacities and are struggling with catastrophic hunger and starvation, according to the U.N’ s World Food Program.

In recent weeks, protests over Israel’s war on Gaza have engulfed college campuses with "Gaza Solidarity Encampments" springing up coast-to-coast demanding an immediate cease-fire. Meanwhile, Jewish students across the country are reporting a rise in antisemitism.

Biden faces commemorating the biggest massacre of Jewish people at a time when Jewish students on college campuses are feeling unsafe. All the while, key voting blocs have said they believe Israel is perpetrating a "genocide" against thousands of Palestinians in Gaza. Chants of "Genocide Joe has got to go!" has been a common refrain at college protests across the country.

After an initial deal in November, the U.S. has been unsuccessful in brokering a second deal between Israel and Hamas. On Monday, Hamas announced it would accept a cease-fire proposal that was negotiated in Egypt without Israeli involvement surprising the Biden administration.

State Department spokesman Matt Miller said the Biden administration was reviewing the Hamas announcement and "will be discussing this response with our partners over the coming hours."

Israel said it would dispatch negotiators to Cairo to discuss an agreement they would be willing to sign. However, Israel began striking targets near Rafah, which has been a point of contention between the Biden administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"You can expect the president to make clear that during these sacred days of remembrance, we honor the memory of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, and we recommit to heeding the lessons of this dark chapter Never again," said Jean-Pierre, during the White House press briefing on Monday. "He will speak to the horrors of October 7th, when Hamas unleashed the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust."

The Anti Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy group, recorded 732 campus-based antisemitic incidents between October 7 and the end of 2023 alone. It was 1,062% higher than the same two-month period in 2022, when ADL recorded only 63 incidents.

Biden’s speech comes on the heels of  former President Donald Trump  accusing Biden of running a "Gestapo administration," a reference to Nazi Germany at a private campaign fundraiser over the weekend.

The comments followed Trump complaining that the multiple indictments against him were politically motivated.

“These people are running a Gestapo administration. And it’s the only thing they have,” And it’s the only way they’re going to win, in their opinion, and it’s actually killing them. But it doesn’t bother me.”

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said the president is focused on bringing Americans together, "instead of echoing the appalling rhetoric of fascists,  lunching with Neo Nazis , and fanning debunked conspiracy theories that have cost brave police officer their lives."

But Biden must strike a delicate balance. Young Americans are more likely to sympathize with the Palestinians than the Israeli peoples, according to a new Pew report. A third of adults under 30 say their sympathies lie either entirely or mostly with the Palestinian people, while 14% say their sympathies lie entirely or mostly with the Israeli people.

A  Gallup survey released March 27 , showed 55% of all Americans disapprove of Israel’s military action. That includes 75% of Democrats, which is up from the 63% who said the same last November.

“At this time of alarming antisemitism and Holocaust denial, remembering the history and lessons of the Holocaust is crucial,” Stuart E. Eizenstat, chairman of the Holocaust museum said in a statement. “The combined presence of these leaders is an important statement to our nation at this very challenging moment.”
