You will learn standard units of time and explore the relationship among the units.

You will learn how to read and record time using a variety of clocks such as digital, analog and 24 hour clocks.

You will learn how to read times on clocks to provide information about relevant situations such as:

  • comparing start and finish times to determine how much time has passed.
  • estimate how long before an event begins, e.g., How long until lunchtime?
  • planning events.
  • reading schedules.

Telling time to the hour

There are 24 hours in a day; however, time is often described using the 12-hour clock. On a 12 hour analog clock, the hours go from 1:00 in the morning until 12:00 noon and then it repeats the cycle from 1:00 in the afternoon until midnight.

Have a look at the following timeline to illustrate the use of a.m. and p.m.

Read and Record Dates and Time

Read and record time on digital and analog clocks.

A clock with numbers and hands ia an analog clock. A clock face shows the numbers from 1 to 12. There are 24 hours in a day. Each day the hour hand moves twice around the clock. It takes one hour for the hour hand to move from one number to the next. There are 60 minutes in 1 hour. Each hour, the minute hand moves onces around the clock. It takes 15 minutes for the minute hand to move 1/4 of the way around the clock. It takes 30 minutes for the minute hand to move half-way around the clock. It takes 45 minutes for the minute hand to move 3/4 of the way around the clock.

A clock with numbers and no hands is called a digital clock. It shows the time using numbers and a colon.

Elapsed Time Games

Try these games and activities at home to help your children practice elapsed time.

Daily Schedule

Let your children keep track of their schedule and ask them to figure the elapsed time for each activity. For example, how long did your child spend eating breakfast, reading, taking a bath, or playing video games?

How Long Will It Take?

Give your kids practice with elapsed time by encouraging them to figure out how long daily activities take. For example, the next time you order a pizza online or by phone, you'll probably be given an estimated delivery time. Use that information to create a word problem that's relevant to your child's life, such as, "It's 5:40 p.m. now and the pizza shop says the pizza will be here at 6:20 p.m. How long will it take for the pizza to arrive?"

Order a set of time dice from online retailers or teacher supply stores. The set contains two twelve-sided dice, one with numbers representing the hours and the other with numbers representing minutes. Take turns rolling the time dice with your child. Each player should roll twice, then calculate the elapsed time between the two resulting dice times. (A pencil and paper will come in handy, as you'll want to jot down the time of the first roll.)
