3. Create an Assignment

Once your class is ready, it's time to set up your first assignment. A Turnitin assignment forms the basis of accepting student submissions. Once your assignments are set up, you start adding students to your class.

• Click the relevant class name
• From your class, click the green Add Assignment button
• Enter an assignment title
• Opt to only allow students to submit file types that generate Originality Reports or to allow any file type
• Next, select your assignment's start date, end date, and post date; the assignment post date is the date from which your students can view your feedback
• To customize your assignment further, click the optional settings button to reveal an array of options; each option will be accompanied with contextual help icons
• Click Submit to add your assignment to your Turnitin class

4. Add Students

There are three routes available for adding students. You may find it convenient to add students one by one, or add a large portion of students at once by uploading a list. Alternatively, why not allow your students to enroll themselves at their own pace?

Add Students One by One

You may prefer to use this method when adding fewer than ten students.

• Click Home from any Turnitin page to direct you to the homepage
• From the Class homepage, click the Students tab at the top of the page
• Click the Add Student button to the right
• Enter the student's first name, last name, and email address
• Click Submit to add the student

Upload a List of Students

For adding ten students or more, you may find it quicker and easier to upload a list.

• In a Word™ or plain text file, each student should be written as: first name, last name, email address format with one student per line. In Excel™, separate the first name, last name, and email address into different cells in a column.
• From the student list, click the Upload List button
• Click the Choose file button and browse for the plain text, Word™, or Excel™ file that you wish to upload
• Once the file has uploaded, click the Submit button to upload
• Check the student details displayed on screen, then click yes, submit to add the students, or no, go back to amend the file

Allow Students to Self-Enroll

Allowing students to self-enroll can save you time.

• Make a note of the seven-digit Class ID for the class you would like your students to join
• Next, select the cog icon under Edit
• From the Edit Class page, make a note of the enrollment password
• Pass the Class ID and enrollment password to your students
• Ensure this information is kept safe at all times

A 16-year-old North Carolina high school student says he was suspended just for saying “illegal alien” while discussing word meaning in English class — possibly ruining his chances of landing a college sports scholarship.

Christian McGhee, a student at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, received a three-day suspension last week after he used the term in English class, the Carolina Journal reported .

His mother, Leah McGhee, said his teacher had given an assignment that used the word “alien,” and Christian asked: “Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?”

Another student reportedly took offense and threatened to fight Christian, so the teacher took the matter to the assistant principal, according to the Carolina Journal.

Eventually, his words were determined to be offensive and disrespectful to Hispanic classmates, so he was suspended.

 “I didn’t make a statement directed towards anyone — I asked a question,” Christian told the outlet.

“I wasn’t speaking of Hispanics because everyone from other countries needs green cards, and the term ‘illegal alien’ is an actual term that I hear on the news and can find in the dictionary,” he added.

The suspension may also affect the student-athlete’s prospects of securing a college sports scholarship, the Journal noted.

“Because of his question, our son was disciplined and given THREE days OUT of school suspension for ‘racism,’” Leah wrote in an email describing the incident.

“He is devastated and concerned that the racism label on his school record will harm his future goal of receiving a track scholarship. We are concerned that he will fall behind in his classes due to being absent for three consecutive days,” she added in the message, which was shared with the outlet.

The irate mom said the assistant principal has refused to remove the suspension from the boy’s record, so the family has hired an attorney.

On Tuesday, Leah appeared on “The Pete Kaliner Show,” which airs on radio station WBT, and said her family had once lived in England, and Christian mentioned how Britons also need green cards to live in the US, Newsweek reported . She said she and her husband told the assistant principal that “illegal alien” is a term their son can look up in a dictionary. “It is a term used as federal code, and it is a term that is heard frequently on many news broadcasts,” Leah said on the show. “I feel that if this was handled properly in the classroom, it could have easily been used as a teachable moment for everyone.”

Republican state Sen. Steve Jarvis said he has contacted the school district superintendent about the matter — but he has not yet taken a stance on what should be done.

“I do not see that that would be an offensive statement, just in getting clarification,” Jarvis told the Journal. “But there again, I don’t know. I don’t know the situation of this particular incident.”

“Please support this based student by helping to raise awareness to his story!” the conservative account wrote in the post, which has received more than 4 million views.

Among those to respond was X owner Elon Musk, who wrote: “This is absurd.”

Conservative personality Ian Miles Chong called it “insane.”

“How does one get suspended for using the term illegal alien?” he asked.

Libs of TikTok added: “Hopefully North Carolina officials can step in and ensure his record isn’t tarnished in any way because he’s trying to secure an athletic scholarship for college.

“He should not be persecuted for using the correct term just because the left is trying to change our entire language,” the account added.

A staffer at Central Davidson High School told Newsweek that they could not comment about a specific student due to federal protections.

“Please know that Davidson County Schools administrators take all discipline incidents seriously and investigate each one thoroughly,” the rep told the mag. “Any violation of the code of conduct is handled appropriately by administrators.”

The student handbook says that “schools may place restrictions on a student’s right to free speech when the speech is obscene, abusive, promoting illegal drug use, or is reasonably expected to cause a substantial disruption to the school day,” the Carolina Journal reported.

A former five-star recruit from Pinson Valley High School in Pinson, Alabama, he was the state's number one recruit and the state's number one cornerback in the 2021 recruiting cycle. He was also the 13th overall recruit in his class. He was nicknamed Kool-Aid as a child by his grandmother; his birth name is Ga’Quincy McKinstry. He attended the same high school as Bo Nix and was a WR for the former Oregon/Auburn signal caller during his freshman season at Pinson Valley High School. McKinstry helped Pinson Valley win a state title and was first-team All-State on defense.

McKinstry was named Alabama’s Mr. Football and the USA Today Male Athlete of the Year after a stellar senior season at WR and CB. He was receiving Division I offers during his freshman season of high school. McKinstry grew up a Crimson Tide fan and stayed in Alabama to play for Nick Saban.

McKinstry was a Freshman All-Sec selection in 2021, he earned a spot as a Second-Team All-American in 2022 while leading the SEC in passes defended, and then was First-team All-American in 2023. He started 33 of 42 career games. McKinstry did not test at the combine due to a Jones fracture in his right foot. He tested the explosive drills and the forty-yard dash at Alabama’s pro day.

Kool-Aid McKinstry is a press-man mirror-match CB with an excellent understanding of concepts and the coverage rules of his defense. He’s very patient at the line of scrimmage, with disciplined eyes and good technique from the LOS, up the route stem, and into the break. McKinstry is also disruptive at the catch point but could do a much better job locating the football to increase the probability of creating turnovers (only two interceptions in his career).

McKinstry has the size, physicality, and fluidness to be an impact player as an outside CB in the NFL; while he isn’t slow, his game is more predicated on short-area quickness than long speed. He is smart, sound in run support, and can play in any defensive style. He fits what Shane Bowen is looking for from a CB; great eyes/awareness, match experience, good tackler, etc. It’s not surprising that the Giants brought him in for a Top-30 visit.

No. 5: Tailback Davis Penn

Offers: Arizona State , Texas State , Toledo , Wisconsin

The Word: Wisconsin offered Davis Penn , who rushed 160 times for 1,594 yards and 30 touchdowns as a sophomore, earlier this month during an unofficial visit. He also had eight receptions for 101 yards, an element coordinator Phil Longo and position coach Devon Spalding found appealing.

"I met with some of the offensive coaches and I really like Coach Spalding and Coach Longo," Penn told BadgerBlitz.com. "I think they are really nice and have great ideas. Coach Longo said he liked my frame and said that I can be an all-purpose back and a great weapon for them.

"I think Coach Spalding is a great coach but an even better guy. He does a really good job of staying in communication with me each week and he does a great job of making me feel wanted during the recruiting process. They were telling me that Wisconsin is 'RBU' and that they've had a lot of Doak Walker winners. Jonathan Taylor , Melvin Gordon , Ron Dayne ... they have a lot of tradition there."
