I’ve been bumping into this book for a long time, as it’s one of the most recommended books by entrepreneurs. Filled with stories and memories of Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize for physics, who was always questioning the status-quo and testing assumptions. In this book he recalls all the experiences he conducted, but also his pranks and adventures (even the ones he pulled in the years he was working on the Manhattan Project).

Google’s co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin , are among the fans of this book. Noah Kagan , founder of Sumo, even said that he if you ever meet him in person, he always has an extra copy, “ because it’s just that amazing “.

I have to agree – I finished it recently, after a few nights of reading Feynman’s adventures until 4 AM (yes, it’s just that addictive!).

Here's one way I’d write a first-person bio:

"I'm a freelance writer specializing in small business content. I've worked with companies in a variety of industries like home care to fine leather goods."

Speaking in the first person here connects you with a client or brand based on your experience and opinions. Put another way, writing a first-person bio is like telling your story to your audience.

Here are a few tips to make your first-person bio great:

Don’t start every sentence with "I."

Showing instead of telling is a great approach.

Let’s say you’re a writer who wants to create a short professional bio. Instead of saying, "I love to write," you can say, "Writer. Bad but enthusiastic dancer."

This portrays your writing skill, shows your personality outside of writing as a dancer, and includes a little sense of humor, which is essential for a writer.

Remember, you know yourself better than anyone.

Third-person bios sound more authoritative and objective. So, if you’re job searching in a formal industry, applying for grants, or trying to get published, you may want to stick to the third person.

For instance, when you write a third-person bio, you may start with:

"Jasmine Montgomery is a Senior Hiring Manager at L’Oreal based in New York. She recruits across several business units to connect with the brightest talent from around the globe."

By only using your name and pronouns to speak about yourself here, you are letting your title and skill set speak for themselves.

These bios create distance between the subject of the bio (you) and the reader through a third person. This person could be anyone, but they usually speak in a tone emphasizing their expertise.

This makes third-person bios feel aloof or overly formal sometimes.

Ideally, your third-person bio should sound friendly but polished, like a message from a close colleague at work. Here are a few tips on how to write a great third-person bio.

If you’re anything like me, you probably don't think about your professional bio until you’re asked to "send one over via email."

You have one afternoon to come up with it, so you scramble together a bio that ends up reading like this:

"Rodney Erickson is a content marketing professional at HubSpot, a CRM platform that helps companies attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.

Previously, Rodney worked as a marketing manager for a tech software startup. He graduated with honors from Columbia University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing."

To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.

Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.

1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.

You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):

  • Facebook Business page .
  • Industry blog byline .
  • Instagram account .
  • Personal website .
  • LinkedIn profile .
  • Industry website .
  • Personal blog .

As you'll see in the professional bio examples below, the length and tone of your bio will differ depending on the platforms you use.

Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.

2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.

If your readers remember nothing else about your bio, they should remember your name. Therefore, it's a good idea for your first and last name to be the first two words of your professional bio.

Even if your name is printed above this bio (hint: it should), this is a rare moment where it's okay to be redundant.

For example, if I were writing my bio, I might start it like this:

3. Mention any associated brand name you might use.

Will your professional bio represent you or a business you work for? Ensure you mention the brand you associate with in your bio. If you're a freelancer, you may have a personal business name or pseudonym you advertise to your clients.

Here are a few examples:

  • Lindsay Kolowich Marketing.
  • SEO Lindsay.
  • Kolowich Consulting.
  • Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).

Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."

4. State your current position and what you do.

Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the following few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Refrain from assuming your audience knows what your job title entails.

Make your primary responsibilities known so readers can know you and understand what you offer to your industry.

5. Include at least one professional accomplishment.

Just as a business touts its client successes through case studies, your professional bio should let your audience know what you've achieved.

What have you done for yourself — as well as for others — that makes you a valuable player in your industry?

6. Describe your values and how they inform your career.

Why do you do what you do? What might make your contribution to the market different from your colleagues? What are the values that make your business a worthwhile investment to others?

Create a professional bio that answers these questions.

7. Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.

Transition from describing your values in work to defining who you are outside of work. This may include:

  • Your family.
  • Your hometown.
  • Sports you play.
  • Hobbies and interests.
  • Favorite music and travel destinations.
  • Side hustles you're working on.

People like connecting with other people. The more transparent you are about who you are personally, the more likable you'll be to people reading about you.

8. Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.

End your professional bio on a good or, more specifically, a funny note. By leaving your audience with something quirky or unique, you can ensure they'll leave your website with a pleasant impression of you.

Following the steps above when writing your bio is important, but take your time with one section. People consume lots of information daily. So ensure your bio hooks 'em in the first line, and you won’t lose them.

  • The tone of the bio is professional and informative rather than overly personal or casual.
  • The bio focuses on Lena’s audience. This lets readers know that Lena wants to help.

5. Mark Levy : Branding Firm Founder

Mark Levy is a small business owner. While the professional bio on his website takes a traditional approach, it still speaks to Mark’s audience.

What I love about his bio is the way he‘s set it up: On his business' "About" page, he‘s listed two biographies, which he’s labeled "Mark Levy's Biography #1" and "Mark Levy's Biography #2."

The second is the "long version," which is even more interesting than the first. Why? It reads like a story — a compelling one, at that. In fact, it gets hilarious in some parts.

The second sentence of the bio reads: "He was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball and football, ran home to watch ape films on the 4:30 Movie, listened to The Jam and The Buzzcocks, and read magic trick books."

Wonbo Woo is the executive producer of WIRED's video content and has several impressive credits to his name. What does this mean for his professional bio? He has to prioritize.

I wouldn‘t necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that’s something I can get behind.

Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio — it makes you seem approachable.

  • It highlights Chris’s achievement without bragging.
  • The last sentence portrays Chris as a responsible man who loves his family.
  • The well-written bio speaks to nature lovers who like the outdoors, surfing, and more. This gives them reasons to follow Chris.

10. Lisa Quine : Creative Consultant

Creative professionals who specialize in visual art may find it challenging to balance the writing of their bio and displaying of their portfolio. Not Lisa Quine. Lisa has an exceptional balance of her professional bio and creative work.

Throughout her bio, you'll notice the number of murals she's completed and a brief timeline of her career. This helps her paint the picture of who she is as a professional.

The rest of her bio similarly focuses on Twine's strengths as someone who’s able to take hair care "back to basics."

Mouzon effectively grips the reader's attention with this introduction and then dives into some of her impressive accomplishments — including a brand now sold at Urban Outfitters and Target.

The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.

For instance, in the second paragraph, she admits:

"While building a brand may have looked effortless from the outside, starting a business at age 23 with no resources or funding quickly forced me to realize that early-stage entrepreneurship was anything but transparent."

As an avid Zumba fan, I was excited to include this one. Perez styles his LinkedIn bio as a short story, starting with his background as a hard-working teen who held three jobs by age 14.

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

Short Bio Examples

Many platforms require professionals to list short bios, falling below a set number of characters. Other professionals opt for a shorter bio in order to most efficiently describe themselves to readers. The following short bio examples will help when writing your own brief professional synopsis.

An effective business bio doesn’t have to come from a template. In fact, if you’re a skilled at creative writing, you can grab a reader’s attention and impress potential clients with a creative business bio on your company page or various social media platforms. Should I write a bio in the third person?

A professional bio can be written in first person or in third person. Professional and more formal bios are often written in third person, while personal and more casual bios typically use first person.

It’s vital, however, that the chosen tense is consistent throughout the bio. For example, if the bio starts off in third person, referencing the subject by name and using pronouns such as “he,” “she” and “they,” then it’s important to continue using third person throughout the entire entry.

If, however, you start your bio by referencing yourself as, “I,” or using first person, then that should remain consistent, as well.

After 95 years in business , Fortune Media has finally picked a woman to run its magazine, event and digital news brands. The media company announced today (April 9) that its chief financial officer Anastasia Nyrkovskaya had been promoted to CEO, replacing Alan Murray , who announced in October 2023 he would step down at the end of this month.

“Anastasia has steered Fortune through three years of profitable growth—almost unheard of in the legacy magazine business,” Murray, a former Fortune editor who was named CEO in 2018, said in a statement. “She has helped lead Fortune’s transformation into a profitable global multi-platform media company and is the right person to lead it into its second century.” 

Nyrkovskaya, who came to Fortune in 2019, told The New York Times in an interview that Fortune was profitable and had expanded by adding 130 employees in the last 12 months, bringing the total staff count to 360. She also said the company’s newsroom had doubled in size since 2021, to 100 employees. Fortune launched a paywall in March 2020, shortly after Nyrkovskaya joined. The same year, it turned a profit. 

Nyrkovskaya revealed in her interview with the Times that 40 percent of Fortune’s revenue came from digital advertising and online subscriptions, 30 percent was from branded events and 25 percent was from the print magazine. 

“For the past five years, I have been focused on fiscal responsibility and the development of new revenue streams to sustain and grow the business,” Nyrkovskaya was quoted as saying in the press release. “Looking ahead, I am excited to drive more focus and growth in journalism and business as Fortune expands globally.” 

Before Fortune, Nyrkovskaya held financial leadership positions at BirchBox, XpresSpa and NBCUniversal. Fortune also hired its first female editor-in-chief, Alyson Shontell, in 2021. Coming from over a decade at Business Insider, she was tasked with catching up Fortune’s newsroom with the rest of digital media .  

Fortune is owned by Thai billionaire Chatchaval Jiaravanon, the chairman of Thailand’s largest business conglomerate, Charoen Pokphand Group. He bought the magazine for $150 million in cash in 2018.

How to find opportunity in a crisis: Launching a spinoff business

Drop lets members receive targeted offers and earn rewards by shopping with their debit or credit cards. From the time CEO Derrick Fung cofounded Drop with his brother Darren Fung and Cameron Dearsley in 2015, he also recognized the enormous potential value in having large volumes of consumer transaction data. In 2020, the company launched Cardify (now called Drop for Business) to responsibly monetize that data.

In a conversation with McKinsey’s Siavash Habibi and Matthias Lange, Derrick Fung discusses the importance of initially walling off the new business, the challenges of securing buy-in from employees, and the importance of having a long-term vision for the new business, including how it fits with the core.

Key insight #1: Initially setting up a new business separate from the core has culture, brand, risk, and other advantages.

Siavash Habibi: Drop was a fast-growing scale-up when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in early 2020. You started Cardify the same year. Why did you set up Cardify as a separate business?

Founded in 2015, the Drop platform allows members to earn rewards for making online and offline purchases and completing surveys. Drop has driven more than $1 billion in sales to North America’s largest brands and merchants, and its members have answered more than 100 million survey questions. Drop has raised over $90 million from top-tier investors in North America.

Derrick Fung: I remember speaking with a board member even before the full COVID-19 shutdown. He counseled me to use the next board meeting to forecast a world in which e-commerce could shut down. It is in moments like those—in challenging times—when some of the most creative ideas come about.

Before everything shut down, we had already begun to execute our long-planned data strategy. We established a separate team to create this new business, despite some internal resistance, because it allowed us to think more independently and take more risk, and because it is more of a B2B play.

Siavash Habibi: How was Drop performing at that point?

Derrick Fung: E-commerce went crazy in the pandemic. People started doing all their shopping online. We saw that growth in our data and in our core business. Also during that period, our merchants were ramping up their marketing spending and consumers had a lot more money to spend. This ties in with the concept of loyalty. Drop was doing well, and continues to do well.

Siavash Habibi: In an economic downturn, many startups and scale-ups focus narrowly on safeguarding the business; Drop started a new business instead. Were you forced to make tradeoffs between the new and core businesses?

Derrick Fung: At that time—and even today—we were focused on defining the right efficiency metrics for our core Drop business. We quickly shifted from top-line growth and user acquisition to unit economics. We ensured the lifetime value of the members we were acquiring outweighed the cost of acquisition. We optimized for gross margins over low-margin revenues. And we made sure everything companywide laddered up to those key metrics—except for Cardify.

Cardify’s goal was to generate top-of-funnel buzz under a different name. We wanted our data to be viewed in as many publications and channels as possible by key decision makers who might ultimately be interested in our data themselves. Continually generating new content continues to be central to our strategy. Moving fast and taking bigger risks was critical to going to market with that data product.

Matthias Lange: What were some of the challenges launching and scaling two businesses in parallel?

Derrick Fung: We have an efficiency mindset at Drop. We’re more buttoned up and focused on increasing profits. Having another part of the business that was moving fast created a mindset gap among our employees. It helped that Cardify was walled off but it was also important that we paint a longer-term picture to show all our people how Cardify fit into Drop. The data asset is a big part of the vision for Drop in the long term. We want to be a high-growth company with an e-commerce marketplace as our core business and margins of 30 percent. As a software company, we can’t achieve those margins without the data assets. Helping everyone understand how the two businesses work together ultimately helped us fix the mindset gap.

Derrik Fung is the CEO and a co-founder of Drop. He began his career with roles in sales and foreign exchange trading in Toronto and New York at investment banks including Merrill Lynch, BNP Paribas, and CIBC Capital Markets. He also previously served as CEO of Tunezy, a music company that was acquired by SFX Entertainment in 2013. He holds a BBA in finance and economics from the University of Toronto.

Derrick Fung: Imagine having a dividend deposited into your Drop points balance every month. The more we use the data, the more that dividend increases. Long term, consumers may share even more data with us, for example, receipt data or location data. From polling, we know our members will give up a good chunk of their data in exchange for our value.

Consumers also receive value from a more personalized experience. Although we technically could do personalization without Cardify, that business accelerated our personalization efforts because we clean and contextualize the data.

Additionally, we now have offerings for merchants at the top and the bottom of the marketing funnel. In addition to helping build loyalty with consumers, we offer data (in accordance with privacy measures and the approval of members) they can use for market share analysis, pricing strategy, retention analysis, and more. Access to real-time data that shows shopping behaviors and where a merchant is winning and losing is very meaningful.

Internally, our business model has also benefited substantially. Drop for Business essentially has 90 to 95 percent margins, and we use that high-margin revenue to pump investment back into the core business to continue to scale. Culturally, we also identify much more as a data company now and are embedding that into our DNA. It’s differentiated us and gives us a more defensible strategy long-term.

Derrick Fung: Move fast and go with your gut and intuition, but also verify with data. In our case, almost overnight everyone moved to shopping online so real-time shopping data became a very interesting opportunity and we had those assets. But it’s also very important to dedicate time initially to getting everyone aligned and helping them see the rationale behind the strategy.

Key insight #4: Clear communication is critical when setting up a new business.

Siavash Habibi: Has this experience changed how you communicate to your Drop team?

Derrick Fung: Totally. When I first started talking about creating a data business internally, I was very casual about it. “Hey, we have this data, and we’re going to start monetizing it.” In retrospect, I should have presented the strategy more formally. Even at a fast-moving scale-up, employees still want clear and pragmatic communications. You also have to be mindful of the audience. A data engineer might get excited about the technical challenges of a new strategy while your sales team wants to hear about the revenue opportunity. I probably needed too many additional cycles of communication to explain the strategy and get buy-in because I didn’t have this foresight.

Richard Leibner, the accountant-turned-agent who turbocharged the careers of numerous TV journalists, died Tuesday after a long illness. He was 85.

Jay Sures, vice chairman of talent agency UTA (which acquired Leibner’s firm N.S. Bienstock in 2014), said in an internal memo that Leibner died at his home in Manhattan surrounded by family members.

“Richard will be remembered as the agent who transformed the news business,” Sures said in the memo. “To say that Richard was iconic and larger than life is truly an understatement.”

Over a nearly six-decade career, Leibner was known as a fierce negotiator for a who’s who of network TV news stars including Diane Sawyer, Mike Wallace, Norah O’Donnell, Ed Bradley, Bill Whitaker and Charlie Rose. Former clients, many of whom he represented for decades, continued to consult with him after his retirement in 2022.

Leibner had the ability to recognize changes in the TV news landscape and then capitalize on them.

When legendary sports TV executive Roone Arledge took over ABC News in the late 1970s, he told Leibner to bring him clients from CBS and NBC who believed they were underpaid. Leibner swung into action and lifted the earning power throughout the entire TV news industry as a result.

As part of Arledge’s recruitment drive, he aggressively pursued CBS News star Dan Rather. Rather stayed at CBS, but Leibner used the offer as leverage to get him named as successor to “CBS Evening News” anchor Walter Cronkite — even though the job had been promised to the network’s Washington correspondent Roger Mudd. Rather’s new assignment came with a record-setting contract that paid $2.2 million a year.

When Ted Turner launched CNN in 1980, Leibner brought the mogul established names such as Daniel Schorr, who gave the nascent cable news operation credibility.

The legendary news agent who shook up the television news industry retires from UTA.

“Richard broadened the definition of talent in the television news business and increased its value enormously,” Andrew Heyward, a former CBS News president, said in a 2022 interview. “Not just for the big-name stars, but for other people that may not be in the top echelon. You had this phenomenon of associate producers walking around saying, ‘I have another year in my contract’ with no irony. This was a new thing.”

Some network news executives were not happy with how Leibner’s agency disrupted their business model. Ed Joyce, a CBS News president in the early 1980s, referred to the Bienstock agency as “flesh peddlers.” Leibner maintained his goal was to get clients “a fairer share of what the business is grossing.”

Leibner was born in Brooklyn and graduated from the University of Rochester. He joined his father’s New York City accounting firm in 1964. Most of their clients were the music publishers and small record companies that operated out of the legendary Brill Building in Times Square.

Leibner and his father eventually joined forces with Nate Bienstock, a life insurance salesman whose clients included CBS News commentator Eric Sevareid and author John Steinbeck. As more journalists started doing television work in the 1960s, Bienstock started handling contracts for them as a side business.

The younger Leibner observed Bienstock and the growth of TV news. Correspondents and anchors covering the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement became household names. Soon, Leibner was representing television news talent.

“The major agencies were all focused on movies and television and making the big money in package fees,” Leibner told The Times in a 2022 interview. “We were specialists, and that’s how we got the foothold and got ahead of everybody.”

By the end of the 1970s, Leibner’s client roster included Rather, Morley Safer, Wallace and Andy Rooney , all part of the cast of “60 Minutes” as it grew into the most popular news program.

Leibner represented Sawyer when she became the first female correspondent on “60 Minutes,” and Bradley, the program’s first Black journalist. He later engineered Sawyer’s move to ABC News, where she eventually became anchor of “ABC World News Tonight.”

Leibner’s business grew with the help of his wife, Carole Cooper, a former TV commercial producer he met on a blind date in 1962. She joined Bienstock in 1976, helping develop the careers of Bill O’Reilly, Megyn Kelly and CNN’s Anderson Cooper, whom she still represents at UTA, where she continues to work.

Leibner said Cooper complemented him, often softening his brash personality.

“She knows my excesses,” Leibner said. “She knows when to stop me from telling dirty jokes. She also had more confidence in my ability to take risks and do things than I even thought. I guess our marriage has lasted as long as it has, and has been as good as it is, because we’re not afraid to be critical and honest with each other.”

In recent years, Leibner devoted much of his time to a family foundation, which contributes to organizations that provide scholarships for students wanting to get into the TV news business. He was also a major supporter of the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation, which houses the papers of journalists at the University of Maryland.

Leibner is survived by Cooper and two sons, Jonathan and Adam, who is also an agent at UTA, and four grandchildren.

O.J. Simpson, Football Star Whose Trial Riveted the Nation, Dies at 76

He ran to football fame and made fortunes in movies. His trial for the murder of his former wife and her friend became an inflection point on race in America.

O.J. Simpson, who ran to fame on the football field, made fortunes as an all-American in movies, television and advertising, and was acquitted of killing his former wife and her friend in a 1995 trial in Los Angeles that mesmerized the nation, died on Wednesday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 76.

The cause was cancer, his family announced on social media.

The jury in the murder trial cleared him, but the case, which had held up a cracked mirror to Black and white America, changed the trajectory of his life. In 1997, a civil suit by the victims’ families found him liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman, and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. He paid little of the debt, moved to Florida and struggled to remake his life, raise his children and stay out of trouble.

In 2006, he sold a book manuscript, titled “If I Did It,” and a prospective TV interview, giving a “hypothetical” account of murders he had always denied committing. A public outcry ended both projects, but Mr. Goldman’s family secured the book rights, added material imputing guilt to Mr. Simpson and had it published.

In 2007, he was arrested after he and other men invaded a Las Vegas hotel room of some sports memorabilia dealers and took a trove of collectibles. He claimed that the items had been stolen from him, but a jury in 2008 found him guilty of 12 charges, including armed robbery and kidnapping, after a trial that drew only a smattering of reporters and spectators. He was sentenced to nine to 33 years in a Nevada state prison. He served the minimum term and was released in 2017.

Over the years, the story of O.J. Simpson generated a tide of tell-all books, movies, studies and debate over questions of justice, race relations and celebrity in a nation that adores its heroes, especially those cast in rags-to-riches stereotypes, but that has never been comfortable with its deeper contradictions.

There were many in the Simpson saga. Yellowing old newspaper clippings yield the earliest portraits of a postwar child of poverty afflicted with rickets and forced to wear steel braces on his spindly legs, of a hardscrabble life in a bleak housing project and of hanging with teenage gangs in the tough back streets of San Francisco, where he learned to run.

“Running, man, that’s what I do,” he said in 1975, when he was one of America’s best-known and highest-paid football players, the Buffalo Bills’ electrifying, swivel-hipped ball carrier, known universally as the Juice. “All my life I’ve been a runner.”

And so he had — running to daylight on the gridiron of the University of Southern California and in the roaring stadiums of the National Football League for 11 years; running for Hollywood movie moguls, for Madison Avenue image-makers and for television networks; running to pinnacles of success in sports and entertainment.

Along the way, he broke college and professional records, won the Heisman Trophy and was enshrined in pro football’s Hall of Fame. He appeared in dozens of movies and memorable commercials for Hertz and other clients; was a sports analyst for ABC and NBC; acquired homes, cars and a radiant family; and became an American idol — a handsome warrior with the gentle eyes and soft voice of a nice guy. And he played golf.

It was the good life, on the surface. But there was a deeper, more troubled reality — about an infant daughter drowning in the family pool and a divorce from his high school sweetheart; about his stormy marriage to a stunning young waitress and her frequent calls to the police when he beat her; about the jealous rages of a frustrated man.

Calls to the Police

The abuse left Nicole Simpson bruised and terrified on scores of occasions, but the police rarely took substantive action. After one call to the police on New Year’s Day, 1989, officers found her badly beaten and half-naked, hiding in the bushes outside their home. “He’s going to kill me!” she sobbed. Mr. Simpson was arrested and convicted of spousal abuse, but was let off with a fine and probation.

The couple divorced in 1992, but confrontations continued. On Oct. 25, 1993, Ms. Simpson called the police again. “He’s back,” she told a 911 operator, and officers once more intervened.

Then it happened. On June 12, 1994, Ms. Simpson, 35, and Mr. Goldman, 25, were attacked outside her condominium in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, not far from Mr. Simpson’s estate. She was nearly decapitated, and Mr. Goldman was slashed to death.

The knife was never found, but the police discovered a bloody glove at the scene and abundant hair, blood and fiber clues. Aware of Mr. Simpson’s earlier abuse and her calls for help, investigators believed from the start that Mr. Simpson, 46, was the killer. They found blood on his car and, in his home, a bloody glove that matched the one picked up near the bodies. There was never any other suspect.

Five days later, after Mr. Simpson had attended Nicole’s funeral with their two children, he was charged with the murders, but fled in his white Ford Bronco. With his old friend and teammate Al Cowlings at the wheel and the fugitive in the back holding a gun to his head and threatening suicide, the Bronco led a fleet of patrol cars and news helicopters on a slow 60-mile televised chase over the Southern California freeways.

Networks pre-empted prime-time programming for the spectacle, some of it captured by news cameras in helicopters, and a nationwide audience of 95 million people watched for hours. Overpasses and roadsides were crowded with spectators. The police closed highways and motorists pulled over to watch, some waving and cheering at the passing Bronco, which was not stopped. Mr. Simpson finally returned home and was taken into custody.

The ensuing trial lasted nine months, from January to early October 1995, and captivated the nation with its lurid accounts of the murders and the tactics and strategy of prosecutors and of a defense that included the “dream team” of Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. , F. Lee Bailey , Alan M. Dershowitz, Barry Scheck and Robert L. Shapiro.

The prosecution, led by Marcia Clark and Christopher A. Darden, had what seemed to be overwhelming evidence: tests showing that blood, shoe prints, hair strands, shirt fibers, carpet threads and other items found at the murder scene had come from Mr. Simpson or his home, and DNA tests showing that the bloody glove found at Mr. Simpson’s home matched the one left at the crime scene. Prosecutors also had a list of 62 incidents of abusive behavior by Mr. Simpson against his wife.

But as the trial unfolded before Judge Lance Ito and a 12-member jury that included 10 Black people, it became apparent that the police inquiry had been flawed. Photo evidence had been lost or mislabeled; DNA had been collected and stored improperly, raising a possibility that it was tainted. And Detective Mark Fuhrman, a key witness, admitted that he had entered the Simpson home and found the matching glove and other crucial evidence — all without a search warrant.

‘If the Glove Don’t Fit’

The defense argued, but never proved, that Mr. Fuhrman planted the second glove. More damaging, however, was its attack on his history of racist remarks. Mr. Fuhrman swore that he had not used racist language for a decade. But four witnesses and a taped radio interview played for the jury contradicted him and undermined his credibility. (After the trial, Mr. Fuhrman pleaded no contest to a perjury charge. He was the only person convicted in the case.)

In what was seen as the crucial blunder of the trial, the prosecution asked Mr. Simpson, who was not called to testify, to try on the gloves. He struggled to do so. They were apparently too small.

“If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit,” Mr. Cochran told the jury later.

In the end, it was the defense that had the overwhelming case, with many grounds for reasonable doubt, the standard for acquittal. But it wanted more. It portrayed the Los Angeles police as racist, charged that a Black man was being railroaded, and urged the jury to think beyond guilt or innocence and send a message to a racist society.

On the day of the verdict, autograph hounds, T-shirt vendors, street preachers and paparazzi engulfed the courthouse steps. After what some news media outlets had called “The Trial of the Century,” producing 126 witnesses, 1,105 items of evidence and 45,000 pages of transcripts, the jury — sequestered for 266 days, longer than any in California history — deliberated for only three hours.

Much of America came to a standstill. In homes, offices, airports and malls, people paused to watch. Even President Bill Clinton left the Oval Office to join his secretaries. In court, cries of “Yes!” and “Oh, no!” were echoed across the nation as the verdict left many Black people jubilant and many white people aghast.

In the aftermath, Mr. Simpson and the case became the grist for television specials, films and more than 30 books, many by participants who made millions. Mr. Simpson, with Lawrence Schiller, produced “I Want to Tell You,” a thin mosaic volume of letters, photographs and self-justifying commentary that sold hundreds of thousands of copies and earned Mr. Simpson more than $1 million.

He was released after 474 days in custody, but his ordeal was hardly over. Much of the case was resurrected for the civil suit by the Goldman and Brown families. A predominantly white jury with a looser standard of proof held Mr. Simpson culpable and awarded the families $33.5 million in damages. The civil case, which excluded racial issues as inflammatory and speculative, was a vindication of sorts for the families and a blow to Mr. Simpson, who insisted that he had no chance of ever paying the damages.

Mr. Simpson had spent large sums for his criminal defense. Records submitted in the murder trial showed his net worth at about $11 million, and people with knowledge of the case said he had only $3.5 million afterward. A 1999 auction of his Heisman Trophy and other memorabilia netted about $500,000, which went to the plaintiffs. But court records show he paid little of the balance that was owed.

He regained custody of the children he had with Ms. Simpson, and in 2000 he moved to Florida, bought a home south of Miami and settled into a quiet life, playing golf and living on pensions from the N.F.L., the Screen Actors Guild and other sources, about $400,000 a year. Florida laws protect a home and pension income from seizure to satisfy court judgments.

The glamour and lucrative contracts were gone, but Mr. Simpson sent his two children to prep school and college. He was seen in restaurants and malls, where he readily obliged requests for autographs. He was fined once for powerboat speeding in a manatee zone, and once for pirating cable television signals.

In 2006, as the debt to the murder victims’ families grew with interest to $38 million, he was sued by Fred Goldman, the father of Ronald Goldman, who contended that his book and television deal for “If I Did It” had advanced him $1 million and that it had been structured to cheat the family of the damages owed.

The projects were scrapped by News Corporation, parent of the publisher HarperCollins and the Fox Television Network, and a corporation spokesman said Mr. Simpson was not expected to repay an $800,000 advance. The Goldman family secured the book rights from a trustee after a bankruptcy court proceeding and had it published in 2007 under the title “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.” On the book’s cover, the “If” appeared in tiny type, and the “I Did It” in large red letters.

Another Trial, and Prison

After years in which it seemed he had been convicted in the court of public opinion, Mr. Simpson in 2008 again faced a jury. This time he was accused of raiding a Las Vegas hotel room in 2007 with five other men, most of them convicted criminals and two armed with guns, to steal a trove of sports memorabilia from a pair of collectible dealers.

Mr. Simpson claimed that he was only trying to retrieve items stolen from him, including eight footballs, two plaques and a photo of him with the F.B.I. director J. Edgar Hoover, and that he had not known about any guns. But four men, who had been arrested with him and pleaded guilty, testified against him, two saying they had carried guns at his request. Prosecutors also played hours of tapes secretly recorded by a co-conspirator detailing the planning and execution of the crime.

On Oct. 3 — 13 years to the day after his acquittal in Los Angeles — a jury of nine women and three men found him guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping, assault, conspiracy, coercion and other charges. After Mr. Simpson was sentenced to a minimum of nine years in prison, his lawyer vowed to appeal, noting that none of the jurors were Black and questioning whether they could be fair to Mr. Simpson after what had happened years earlier. But jurors said the double-murder case was never mentioned in deliberations.

In 2013, the Nevada Parole Board, citing his positive conduct in prison and participation in inmate programs, granted Mr. Simpson parole on several charges related to his robbery conviction. But the board left other verdicts in place. His bid for a new trial was rejected by a Nevada judge, and legal experts said that appeals were unlikely to succeed. He remained in custody until Oct. 1, 2017, when the parole board unanimously granted him parole when he became eligible.

Certain conditions of Mr. Simpson’s parole — travel restrictions, no contacts with co-defendants in the robbery case and no drinking to excess — remained until 2021, when they were lifted, making him a completely free man.

Questions about his guilt or innocence in the murders of his former wife and Mr. Goldman never went away. In May 2008, Mike Gilbert, a memorabilia dealer and former crony, said in a book that Mr. Simpson, high on marijuana, had admitted the killings to him after the trial. Mr. Gilbert quoted Mr. Simpson as saying that he had carried no knife but that he had used one that Ms. Simpson had in her hand when she opened the door. He also said that Mr. Simpson had stopped taking arthritis medicine to let his hands swell so that they would not fit the gloves in court. Mr. Simpson’s lawyer Yale L. Galanter denied Mr. Gilbert’s claims, calling him delusional.

In 2016, more than 20 years after his murder trial, the story of O.J. Simpson was told twice more for endlessly fascinated mass audiences on television. “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Ryan Murphy’s installment in the “American Crime Story” anthology on FX, focused on the trial itself and on the constellation of characters brought together by the defendant (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). “O.J.: Made in America,” a five-part, nearly eight-hour installment in ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary series (it was also released in theaters), detailed the trial but extended the narrative to include a biography of Mr. Simpson and an examination of race, fame, sports and Los Angeles over the previous half-century.

A.O. Scott, in a commentary in The New York Times, called “The People v. O.J. Simpson” a “tightly packed, almost indecently entertaining piece of pop realism, a Dreiser novel infused with the spirit of Tom Wolfe” and said “O.J.: Made in America” had “the grandeur and authority of the best long-form fiction.”

In Leg Braces as a Child

Orenthal James Simpson was born in San Francisco on July 9, 1947, one of four children of James and Eunice (Durden) Simpson. As an infant afflicted with the calcium deficiency rickets, he wore leg braces for several years but outgrew his disability. His father, a janitor and cook, left the family when the child was 4, and his mother, a hospital nurse’s aide, raised the children in a housing project in the tough Potrero Hill district.

As a teenager, Mr. Simpson, who hated the name Orenthal and called himself O.J., ran with street gangs. But at 15 he was introduced by a friend to Willie Mays, the renowned San Francisco Giants outfielder. The encounter was inspirational and turned his life around, Mr. Simpson recalled. He joined the Galileo High School football team and won All-City honors in his senior year.

In 1967, Mr. Simpson married his high school sweetheart, Marguerite Whitley. The couple had three children, Arnelle, Jason and Aaren. Shortly after their divorce in 1979, Aaren, 23 months old, fell into a swimming pool at home and died a week later.

Mr. Simpson married Nicole Brown in 1985; the couple had a daughter, Sydney, and a son, Justin. He is survived by Arnelle, Jason, Sydney and Justin Simpson and three grandchildren, his lawyer Malcolm P. LaVergne said.

After being released from prison in Nevada in 2017, Mr. Simpson moved into the Las Vegas country club home of a wealthy friend, James Barnett, for what he assumed would be a temporary stay. But he found himself enjoying the local golf scene and making friends, sometimes with people who introduced themselves to him at restaurants, Mr. LaVergne said. Mr. Simpson decided to remain in Las Vegas full time. At his death, he lived right on the course of the Rhodes Ranch Golf Club.

From his youth, Mr. Simpson was a natural on the gridiron. He had dazzling speed, power and finesse in a broken field that made him hard to catch, let alone tackle. He began his collegiate career at San Francisco City College, scoring 54 touchdowns in two years. In his third year he transferred to Southern Cal, where he shattered records — rushing for 3,423 yards and 36 touchdowns in 22 games — and led the Trojans into the Rose Bowl in successive years. He won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s best college football player of 1968. Some magazines called him the greatest running back in the history of the college game.

His professional career was even more illustrious, though it took time to get going. The No. 1 draft pick in 1969, Mr. Simpson went to the Buffalo Bills — the league’s worst team had the first pick — and was used sparingly in his rookie season; in his second, he was sidelined with a knee injury. But by 1971, behind a line known as the Electric Company because they “turned on the Juice,” he began breaking games open.

In 1973, Mr. Simpson became the first to rush for over 2,000 yards, breaking a record held by Jim Brown, and was named the N.F.L.’s most valuable player. In 1975, he led the American Football Conference in rushing and scoring. After nine seasons, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, his hometown team, and played his last two years with them. He retired in 1979 as the highest-paid player in the league, with a salary over $800,000, having scored 61 touchdowns and rushed for more than 11,000 yards in his career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

Mr. Simpson’s work as a network sports analyst overlapped with his football years. He was a color commentator for ABC from 1969 to 1977, and for NBC from 1978 to 1982. He rejoined ABC on “Monday Night Football” from 1983 to 1986.

Actor and Pitchman

And he had a parallel acting career. He appeared in some 30 films as well as television productions, including the mini-series “Roots” (1977) and the movies “The Towering Inferno” (1974), “Killer Force” (1976), “Cassandra Crossing” (1976), “Capricorn One” (1977), “Firepower” (1979) and others, including the comedy “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad” (1988) and its two sequels.

He did not pretend to be a serious actor. “I’m a realist,” he said. “No matter how many acting lessons I took, the public just wouldn’t buy me as Othello.”

Mr. Simpson was a congenial celebrity. He talked freely to reporters and fans, signed autographs, posed for pictures with children and was self-effacing in interviews, crediting his teammates and coaches, who clearly liked him. In an era of Black power displays, his only militancy was to crack heads on the gridiron.

His smiling, racially neutral image, easygoing manner and almost universal acceptance made him a perfect candidate for endorsements. Even before joining the N.F.L., he signed deals, including a three-year, $250,000 contract with Chevrolet. He later endorsed sporting goods, soft drinks, razor blades and other products.

In 1975, Hertz made him the first Black star of a national television advertising campaign. Memorable long-running commercials depicted him sprinting through airports and leaping over counters to get to a Hertz rental car. He earned millions, Hertz rentals shot up and the ads made O.J.’s face one of the most recognizable in America.

Mr. Simpson, in a way, wrote his own farewell on the day of his arrest. As he rode in the Bronco with a gun to his head, a friend, Robert Kardashian, released a handwritten letter to the public that he had left at home, expressing love for Ms. Simpson and denying that he killed her. “Don’t feel sorry for me,” he wrote. “I’ve had a great life, great friends. Please think of the real O.J. and not this lost person.”

Mary and George Villiers’ plot to gain favor and wealth from King James I is the basis of a new Starz miniseries starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine.

Penniless after the death of her first husband in 1606 and with four children to support, Englishwoman Mary Villiers desperately searched for a way to turn her family’s fortune around. Her radical solution—to infiltrate the court and personal life of King James I—would catapult Mary and her second son, George, to the center of the English monarchy and earn them a rather notorious reputation throughout history.

In what could be described as an extreme case of helicopter parenting, the series explores how Mary helped her son manipulate the king for their family’s own benefit—with George gaining plenty of property and prestige along the way. Eventually, though, his outspokenness caught up to him with unintended consequences.

Mary was eager to provide for her children

Although Mary eventually became a major part of the king’s circle, her early life was much less noteworthy. Believed to have been born in 1570, Mary was the daughter of a Leicester squire named Anthony Beaumont. With little money or status, she began working as a waiting woman —essentially, a personal servant—to a richer relative in her teenage years. It was during this time she married her first husband, a sheep farmer named George Villiers who was also her cousin.

George, who already had six children from his first marriage, had four more kids with Mary. They welcomed one daughter, Susan, and three sons: John, George, and Christopher.

In 1606, when the younger George was in his early teens, his father died and left the family broke. Mary hastily remarried a much older wealthy nobleman named William Raynor , hoping to benefit financially. However, he quickly fell ill and died only two years later. Mary’s hopes of economic security went unfulfilled when Raynor’s estate went to his daughter Elizabeth, instead.

And so Mary wed a third time to Thomas Compton, whose brother had a role in the court of King James I. Looking to exploit the connection, Mary scraped together enough money to send 16-year-old George to France for two years, where he became an accomplished rider and dancer and learned the skills necessary to be a courtier.

All George had to do now was work his way into the king’s good graces.

George quickly became the king’s favorite assistant

Once described by a bishop as “the handsomest-bodied man in all of England,” George did charm James I with help from Mary and some members of the court, who saw a political opportunity.

At the time, Robert Carr , the Earl of Somerset, was the king’s favorite adviser. However, courtiers viewed him as high-handed and possessive, not to mention easily influenced by the king’s Scottish connections (James also ruled Scotland), and they saw a chance to replace him with George. According to The Telegraph , they appointed George as the royal cupbearer, responsible for handing the king his drinks. The plan worked; soon after, George and the king began hunting and riding together.

George was knighted in 1615 and also became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber—an adviser who helped dress the king, guard his chambers, and accompany him in public. His title and role continued to evolve over the next decade, from viscount to earl (officially taking Carr’s appointment) to marquis. Finally, in 1624, George became the Duke of Buckingham. By that time, he had married Lady Katherine Manners , one of the richest women in England with whom he had four children.

Mary experienced her own rapid ascent, befriending the countess of Salisbury and becoming a confidante to the king. She appeared at court so much that George once petitioned her to stay away so as “not to intermeddle with business.” Still, she gained the title of Countess of Buckingham in 1618, further proof her family had attained the wealth and prestige she desired.

George and James were likely lovers until their relationship soured

Although George and King James wouldn’t have disclosed it, evidence suggests their relationship became sexual. James married Ann of Denmark in 1589 and the couple had multiple children, three of whom survived into adulthood. However, he was also notorious for his cadre of male favorites and is described by historian Michael B. Young as “the most prominent homosexual figure in the early modern period.”

George and the king’s connection was reflected in letters the pair exchanged. James referred to his young assistant as his “sweet child and wife,” while George described himself as James’ “most humble slave and servant.”

Despite their personal affinity for each another, the king and duke’s clashing political motives began to drive them apart. George became a tutor and ally of James’ son Charles , the heir to the throne, and was eager to declare war on Spain after a failed marriage negotiation for the young prince in 1623. The king refused, committed to maintaining peace.

Meanwhile, James’ health had begun to decline. He eventually died in March 1625 after contracting a malaria-like fever—sparking rumors that George might have poisoned him to gain favor with Charles and pursue his war. While no conclusive evidence was found, Woolley explored this theory in his book and it could also appear in Mary & George .

In 1628, George met a bloody end

With his ally Charles now on the throne, George ordered multiple attacks, including against Spain. However, they failed miserably, leading parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him . King Charles I was able to spare him that fate, but the duke’s reputation had become irreparable.

According to Portsmouth Cathedral , George hoped to organize another military campaign, this time into France, in 1628. However, an angry mob of 300 sailors surrounded his carriage in Portsmouth, and the duke used deadly force to push them back. The stage was set for more violence.

On August 23, 1628, John Felton, a disgruntled army lieutenant who George owed money and had denied a promotion, arrived in Portsmouth with a dagger he bought with money borrowed from his mother. He stabbed the 35-year-old duke, killing him, inside a crowded room at the Greyhound Inn. Felton immediately confessed to the crime inside a kitchen area then formally pleaded guilty and was hanged that November.

The duke’s body was returned to London, where King Charles ordered a burial inside Henry VII’s chapel at Westminster Abbey—a place previously reserved for royals . Meanwhile, Mary, who had likely known her son was vulnerable given his declining reputation, lived not much longer after his murder. She died on April 19, 1632, and was likewise buried at Westminster.

Although the mother and son couldn’t sustain their grip on power forever, their prolonged influence on the royal family and dignified interments illustrate just how successful their scheme ultimately proved.

Mary & George , a seven-episode limited series rated TV-MA, features Julianne Moore as Mary Villiers, Nicholas Galitzine as George Villiers, and Tony Curran as King James I. Moore explained to Vanity Fair in March 2024 that the show offers a nuanced perspective of Mary’s political shrewdness and relationship with her son.

“I don’t think it’s particularly great parenting,” Moore said. “But [Mary’s] someone who featured in history who’s not talked about and when she is talked about she’s vilified. And it’s like, wait a minute. Why would she be vilified? Why would someone have depicted her as a witch when, in fact, she managed to achieve a lot for herself and set up all of her kids?”
