IT Trends: Tech, Strategy, Hiring, and More in 2024

Peer into the future of IT trends ranging from layoff bouncebacks to AI tactics.

Information Technology (IT) is a fast-paced, ever-changing domain. Staying current with the latest trends is essential for both established and aspiring professionals. In the following article, you’ll find general and industry-specific IT trends related to emerging technologies, infrastructure, and jobs. First, let’s look at 2023 to identify persistent trends that may continue to shape the industry. 

2023 IT trends: Where are they now?

Technological research and consulting firm Gartner reported the following three movements among the "top 10 strategic technology trends of 2023” [ 1 ]: 

AI Trust, Risk, and Security Management (AI TRISM) . According to IBM data, 30 percent of global IT professionals say employees are saving time using AI tools and automation in their organization [ 2 ]. AI TRISM is a framework designed to increase transparency, protect data, and enforce AI ethics . It includes both technology and methodology. AI TRISM continues to emerge alongside AI advancements, topping the list of Gartner’s top 10 strategic technology trends of 2024 [ 3 ]. 

Sustainable technology. Sustainable technology is defined as solutions that increase the efficiency of IT services, conserve resources, and help both organizations and consumers reach their sustainability goals. Although technology is the primary focus, methodologies, and strategies also contribute to sustainable technology in IT. Sustainable technology moved up from 10th place in Gartner’s 2023 list to third place in 2024 [ 3 ].

Metaverse. In 2022, Gartner predicted that 25 percent of people would spend at least an hour per day in the metaverse by 2026 [ 4 ]. It’s important to note that the metaverse is not limited to Mark Zuckerburg’s metaverse . The metaverse is an amalgamation of vendors creating a virtual reality environment with immersive experiences and an economy. Around 400 million people use the metaverse today, but over half of them are under 13 years old, and 83.5 percent are under 18 [ 5 ]. Most popular digital platforms include Roblox and Minecraft, centering entertainment over other predicted usages such as work, shopping, and education.

IT industry trends in 2024

In recent years, hype has cycled rapidly for technologies ranging from NFT art to ChatGPT . These changes in perceived popularity don’t discredit the merit of these technologies, but they may help us view them more objectively. For example, generative AI remains at the top of many minds so far in 2024. CompTIA expects this excitement will wane over the next year, not because the tech was overhyped but because companies will turn their attention to building the infrastructure needed to employ it responsibly [ 6 ]. In the following sections, we’ll explore more trend forecasts for 2024, ranging from cutting-edge technology to organizational strategy.

According to Statista, IT automation technology is the top IT trend among organizations in North America and Europe for 2024 [ 7 ]. 

IT security trends

The demand for governance is growing in the cybersecurity and data science spaces. CompTIA reports that only 5 percent of individuals cite governance as a key priority for cybersecurity initiatives and suggests this view is due to the belief that governance is synonymous with regulatory compliance [ 6 ]. In truth, governance practices serve many more purposes than just compliance. Organizations are beginning to realize that structured business processes surrounding vast amounts of data can provide more advanced analytics, informing critical business decisions and strengthening valuable insights. Human intelligence will also be a key factor in IT security for 2024 as generative AI increases the scale and believability of social engineering cyber threats.

IT automation trends

Generative AI advancements are driving modern IT automation. Gartner predicted in 2023 that hyper-automation would trend upward to meet accuracy and productivity requirements. In 2024, automation has also helped improve cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency. In addition to traditional robotic process automation (RPA) use cases like data entry, AI has propelled the automation of more complex workflows such as fielding customer service inquiries, scheduling jobs, and screening candidates for hiring.

IT infrastructure trends

While the adoption of cloud infrastructure is not a new trend, it’s one that is surpassing expectations. Worldwide spending on cloud computing by businesses is projected to reach $1 trillion in 2024 [ 8 ]. Hybrid cloud computing has become especially integral to digital transformations, helping companies transition fully or partially from legacy IT systems without compromising integrity or performance. 

IT hiring trends

In 2022 and 2023, layoffs dominated headlines. The outlook for 2024 paints a much brighter picture, with Google research showing that 39 percent of hiring leaders plan to increase their financial commitment toward hiring [ 9 ]. The same research reveals the following:

Forty-three percent of job seekers cited upfront access to salary ranges as the top feature on job search platforms.

Fifty-eight percent of hiring leaders and 52 percent of job seekers agree that it’s important for large recruitment sites to use AI in the search process. Top use cases for AI in hiring include applicant matching, screening, and ranking, and identifying or removing old, unavailable positions. 

Emerging use cases for generative AI in hiring include auto-generating job descriptions, responding to candidates via email, and advertising open positions. 

IT outsourcing trends

The IT outsourcing industry accounted for over $460 billion in revenue last year [ 10 ]. A central component of IT outsourcing today is managed services. The term managed services refers to outsourcing IT functions like cybersecurity or cloud services to managed service providers (MSPs). Digital transformations like the cloud migration mentioned above are advancing IT outsourcing, especially given the rise of segments like software as a service (SaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS). 

IT recruitment trends

In 2024, large recruitment websites are the most commonly used mode of contact between employers and job seekers [ 9 ]. Fifty-eight percent of hiring decision-makers reported large recruitment sites as their top sources for discovering qualified candidates, placing them above their own company’s career web pages and even employee referrals. Job seekers also identify these large job search engines as their number one source, with a colossal 92 percent claiming to use them monthly.

The present and future of AI

How has artificial intelligence changed and shaped our world over the last five years? How will AI continue to impact our lives in the coming years? Those were the questions addressed in the most recent report from the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100), an ongoing project hosted at Stanford University, that will study the status of AI technology and its impacts on the world over the next 100 years.

The 2021 report is the second in a series that will be released every five years until 2116. Titled “Gathering Strength, Gathering Storms,” the report explores the various ways AI is  increasingly touching people’s lives in settings that range from  movie recommendations  and  voice assistants  to  autonomous driving  and  automated medical diagnoses .

Barbara Grosz , the Higgins Research Professor of Natural Sciences at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is a member of the standing committee overseeing the AI100 project and Finale Doshi-Velez , Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, is part of the panel of interdisciplinary researchers who wrote this year’s report. 

We spoke with Doshi-Velez about the report, what it says about the role AI is currently playing in our lives, and how it will change in the future.  

Q: Let's start with a snapshot: What is the current state of AI and its potential?

Doshi-Velez: Some of the biggest changes in the last five years have been how well AIs now perform in large data regimes on specific types of tasks.  We've seen [DeepMind’s] AlphaZero become the best Go player entirely through self-play, and everyday uses of AI such as grammar checks and autocomplete, automatic personal photo organization and search, and speech recognition become commonplace for large numbers of people.  

In terms of potential, I'm most excited about AIs that might augment and assist people.  They can be used to drive insights in drug discovery, help with decision making such as identifying a menu of likely treatment options for patients, and provide basic assistance, such as lane keeping while driving or text-to-speech based on images from a phone for the visually impaired.  In many situations, people and AIs have complementary strengths. I think we're getting closer to unlocking the potential of people and AI teams.

There's a much greater recognition that we should not be waiting for AI tools to become mainstream before making sure they are ethical.

Q: Over the course of 100 years, these reports will tell the story of AI and its evolving role in society. Even though there have only been two reports, what's the story so far?

There's actually a lot of change even in five years.  The first report is fairly rosy.  For example, it mentions how algorithmic risk assessments may mitigate the human biases of judges.  The second has a much more mixed view.  I think this comes from the fact that as AI tools have come into the mainstream — both in higher stakes and everyday settings — we are appropriately much less willing to tolerate flaws, especially discriminatory ones. There's also been questions of information and disinformation control as people get their news, social media, and entertainment via searches and rankings personalized to them. So, there's a much greater recognition that we should not be waiting for AI tools to become mainstream before making sure they are ethical.

Q: What is the responsibility of institutes of higher education in preparing students and the next generation of computer scientists for the future of AI and its impact on society?

First, I'll say that the need to understand the basics of AI and data science starts much earlier than higher education!  Children are being exposed to AIs as soon as they click on videos on YouTube or browse photo albums. They need to understand aspects of AI such as how their actions affect future recommendations.

But for computer science students in college, I think a key thing that future engineers need to realize is when to demand input and how to talk across disciplinary boundaries to get at often difficult-to-quantify notions of safety, equity, fairness, etc.  I'm really excited that Harvard has the Embedded EthiCS program to provide some of this education.  Of course, this is an addition to standard good engineering practices like building robust models, validating them, and so forth, which is all a bit harder with AI.

I think a key thing that future engineers need to realize is when to demand input and how to talk across disciplinary boundaries to get at often difficult-to-quantify notions of safety, equity, fairness, etc. 

Q: Your work focuses on machine learning with applications to healthcare, which is also an area of focus of this report. What is the state of AI in healthcare? 

A lot of AI in healthcare has been on the business end, used for optimizing billing, scheduling surgeries, that sort of thing.  When it comes to AI for better patient care, which is what we usually think about, there are few legal, regulatory, and financial incentives to do so, and many disincentives. Still, there's been slow but steady integration of AI-based tools, often in the form of risk scoring and alert systems.

In the near future, two applications that I'm really excited about are triage in low-resource settings — having AIs do initial reads of pathology slides, for example, if there are not enough pathologists, or get an initial check of whether a mole looks suspicious — and ways in which AIs can help identify promising treatment options for discussion with a clinician team and patient.

Q: Any predictions for the next report?

I'll be keen to see where currently nascent AI regulation initiatives have gotten to. Accountability is such a difficult question in AI,  it's tricky to nurture both innovation and basic protections.  Perhaps the most important innovation will be in approaches for AI accountability.

McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook 2023

After a tumultuous 2022 for technology investment and talent, the first half of 2023 has seen a resurgence of enthusiasm about technology’s potential to catalyze progress in business and society. Generative AI deserves much of the credit for ushering in this revival, but it stands as just one of many advances on the horizon that could drive sustainable, inclusive growth and solve complex global challenges.

To help executives track the latest developments, the McKinsey Technology Council  has once again identified and interpreted the most significant technology trends unfolding today. While many trends are in the early stages of adoption and scale, executives can use this research to plan ahead by developing an understanding of potential use cases and pinpointing the critical skills needed as they hire or upskill talent to bring these opportunities to fruition.

Our analysis examines quantitative measures of interest, innovation, and investment to gauge the momentum of each trend. Recognizing the long-term nature and interdependence of these trends, we also delve into underlying technologies, uncertainties, and questions surrounding each trend. This year, we added an important new dimension for analysis—talent. We provide data on talent supply-and-demand dynamics for the roles of most relevance to each trend. (For more, please see the sidebar, “Research methodology.”)

New and notable

All of last year’s 14 trends remain on our list, though some experienced accelerating momentum and investment, while others saw a downshift. One new trend, generative AI, made a loud entrance and has already shown potential for transformative business impact.

Research methodology

To assess the development of each technology trend, our team collected data on five tangible measures of activity: search engine queries, news publications, patents, research publications, and investment. For each measure, we used a defined set of data sources to find occurrences of keywords associated with each of the 15 trends, screened those occurrences for valid mentions of activity, and indexed the resulting numbers of mentions on a 0–1 scoring scale that is relative to the trends studied. The innovation score combines the patents and research scores; the interest score combines the news and search scores. (While we recognize that an interest score can be inflated by deliberate efforts to stimulate news and search activity, we believe that each score fairly reflects the extent of discussion and debate about a given trend.) Investment measures the flows of funding from the capital markets into companies linked with the trend. Data sources for the scores include the following:

  • Patents. Data on patent filings are sourced from Google Patents.
  • Research. Data on research publications are sourced from the Lens (www.lens.org).
  • News. Data on news publications are sourced from Factiva.
  • Searches. Data on search engine queries are sourced from Google Trends.
  • Investment. Data on private-market and public-market capital raises are sourced from PitchBook.
  • Talent demand. Number of job postings is sourced from McKinsey’s proprietary Organizational Data Platform, which stores licensed, de-identified data on professional profiles and job postings. Data is drawn primarily from English-speaking countries.

In addition, we updated the selection and definition of trends from last year’s study to reflect the evolution of technology trends:

  • The generative-AI trend was added since last year’s study.
  • We adjusted the definitions of electrification and renewables (previously called future of clean energy) and climate technologies beyond electrification and renewables (previously called future of sustainable consumption).
  • Data sources were updated. This year, we included only closed deals in PitchBook data, which revised downward the investment numbers for 2018–22. For future of space technologies investments, we used research from McKinsey’s Aerospace & Defense Practice.

This new entrant represents the next frontier of AI. Building upon existing technologies such as applied AI and industrializing machine learning, generative AI has high potential and applicability across most industries. Interest in the topic (as gauged by news and internet searches) increased threefold from 2021 to 2022. As we recently wrote, generative AI and other foundational models  change the AI game by taking assistive technology to a new level, reducing application development time, and bringing powerful capabilities to nontechnical users. Generative AI is poised to add as much as $4.4 trillion in economic value from a combination of specific use cases and more diffuse uses—such as assisting with email drafts—that increase productivity. Still, while generative AI can unlock significant value, firms should not underestimate the economic significance and the growth potential that underlying AI technologies and industrializing machine learning can bring to various industries.

Investment in most tech trends tightened year over year, but the potential for future growth remains high, as further indicated by the recent rebound in tech valuations. Indeed, absolute investments remained strong in 2022, at more than $1 trillion combined, indicating great faith in the value potential of these trends. Trust architectures and digital identity grew the most out of last year’s 14 trends, increasing by nearly 50 percent as security, privacy, and resilience become increasingly critical across industries. Investment in other trends—such as applied AI, advanced connectivity, and cloud and edge computing—declined, but that is likely due, at least in part, to their maturity. More mature technologies can be more sensitive to short-term budget dynamics than more nascent technologies with longer investment time horizons, such as climate and mobility technologies. Also, as some technologies become more profitable, they can often scale further with lower marginal investment. Given that these technologies have applications in most industries, we have little doubt that mainstream adoption will continue to grow.

Organizations shouldn’t focus too heavily on the trends that are garnering the most attention. By focusing on only the most hyped trends, they may miss out on the significant value potential of other technologies and hinder the chance for purposeful capability building. Instead, companies seeking longer-term growth should focus on a portfolio-oriented investment across the tech trends most important to their business. Technologies such as cloud and edge computing and the future of bioengineering have shown steady increases in innovation and continue to have expanded use cases across industries. In fact, more than 400 edge use cases across various industries have been identified, and edge computing is projected to win double-digit growth globally over the next five years. Additionally, nascent technologies, such as quantum, continue to evolve and show significant potential for value creation. Our updated analysis for 2023 shows that the four industries likely to see the earliest economic impact from quantum computing—automotive, chemicals, financial services, and life sciences—stand to potentially gain up to $1.3 trillion in value by 2035. By carefully assessing the evolving landscape and considering a balanced approach, businesses can capitalize on both established and emerging technologies to propel innovation and achieve sustainable growth.

Tech talent dynamics

We can’t overstate the importance of talent as a key source in developing a competitive edge. A lack of talent is a top issue constraining growth. There’s a wide gap between the demand for people with the skills needed to capture value from the tech trends and available talent: our survey of 3.5 million job postings in these tech trends found that many of the skills in greatest demand have less than half as many qualified practitioners per posting as the global average. Companies should be on top of the talent market, ready to respond to notable shifts and to deliver a strong value proposition to the technologists they hope to hire and retain. For instance, recent layoffs in the tech sector may present a silver lining for other industries that have struggled to win the attention of attractive candidates and retain senior tech talent. In addition, some of these technologies will accelerate the pace of workforce transformation. In the coming decade, 20 to 30 percent of the time that workers spend on the job could be transformed by automation technologies, leading to significant shifts in the skills required to be successful. And companies should continue to look at how they can adjust roles or upskill individuals to meet their tailored job requirements. Job postings in fields related to tech trends grew at a very healthy 15 percent between 2021 and 2022, even though global job postings overall decreased by 13 percent. Applied AI and next-generation software development together posted nearly one million jobs between 2018 and 2022. Next-generation software development saw the most significant growth in number of jobs (exhibit).

This bright outlook for practitioners in most fields highlights the challenge facing employers who are struggling to find enough talent to keep up with their demands. The shortage of qualified talent has been a persistent limiting factor in the growth of many high-tech fields, including AI, quantum technologies, space technologies, and electrification and renewables. The talent crunch is particularly pronounced for trends such as cloud computing and industrializing machine learning, which are required across most industries. It’s also a major challenge in areas that employ highly specialized professionals, such as the future of mobility and quantum computing (see interactive).

Information Technology and the U.S. Workforce: Where Are We and Where Do We Go from Here? (2017)

Progress in many of the basic computing and information technologies has been rapid in recent years, and the committee does not expect the pace of change to slow down in the foreseeable future. While some technologies are reaching maturity now, many important technologies have enormous future potential. As more of the world’s information is digitized and more people and things are networked, the economics of the digital, networked economy will become ever more important. This includes the ability to make copies of goods and services at almost zero cost and deliver them anywhere on the planet almost instantaneously. Furthermore, digitization of products, services, processes, and interactions makes it possible to measure and manage work with far more precision. Data-driven decision making and machine learning provide vast opportunities for improving productivity, efficiency, accuracy, and innovation.

The committee expects important innovations to come in the area of artifical intelligence (AI) and robotics. Several decades ago, humans were unable to converse with machines using ordinary speech; now it is done routinely. Machines are learning to effectively translate from one language to another, a task once seen only in science fiction. We are moving from an era where machines were blind, unable to recognize even simple objects, to an era where they can distinguish faces, read street signs, and understand the content of photographs as well as—or better than—humans. They are being put to work reading X-ray and MRI images, advising doctors on potential drug interactions, helping lawyers

sift through documents, and composing simple stories about sports and finance for newspapers. Machines are becoming much better at reasoning and can now defeat the best humans at most games of skill, from checkers and chess to trivia and Go. Machines are learning to drive cars, which could potentially save thousands of lives in the United States and millions worldwide. Bipedal robots are learning to navigate stairs and uneven terrain, while their cheetah-like brethren can outrun even the fastest humans. Many of the technologies with the greatest impact will likely look unlike any human or animal, but will transport shelves of inventory throughout warehouses, assemble basic electronics in factories, fly to disaster zones with medicine, swim beneath the waves to gather data for oceanographers, and haunt computer networks in search of cyberattacks. In fact, many of these exist in some form already, although they are likely to become more widespread and more competent.

While there are undoubtedly important technological breakthroughs to come, it is critical to note that the technologies that exist today and those under active development have important implications for the workforce. They create opportunities for new products, services, organizational processes, and business models as well as opportunities for automating existing tasks, even whole occupations. Many cognitive and physical tasks will be replaced by machines. At the same time, we expect new job opportunities to emerge as increasingly capable combinations of humans and machines attack problems that previously have been intractable.

Advances in IT and automation will present opportunities to boost America’s overall income and wealth, improve health care, shorten the work week, develop new goods and services, and increase product safety and reliability.

These same advances could also lead to growing inequality, decreased job stability, increasing demands on workers to change jobs, and changes in business organization. There are also important implications for other aspects of society, both intended and unintended, not the least of which include potentially profound changes in education, privacy, security, social relationships, and even democracy.

The ultimate effects of these technologies are not predetermined. Rather, like all tools, computing and information technologies can be used in many different ways. The outcomes for the workforce and society at large depend on our choices. Technology can be a powerful tool. What do we want for our future society? How do we decide this?

Potential future technological capabilities and innovations are largely unpredictable, and their implications and interactions are complex. Investing in extensive and effective data gathering, a robust infrastructure for analyzing these data, and multidisciplinary research will enable a deeper

understanding of emerging changes in technology and the workforce. The results of this research will inform the adoption of policies that will help maximize the resilience and prosperity of the institutions, organizations, and individuals in our society.

Recent years have yielded significant advances in computing and communication technologies, with profound impacts on society. Technology is transforming the way we work, play, and interact with others. From these technological capabilities, new industries, organizational forms, and business models are emerging.

Technological advances can create enormous economic and other benefits, but can also lead to significant changes for workers. IT and automation can change the way work is conducted, by augmenting or replacing workers in specific tasks. This can shift the demand for some types of human labor, eliminating some jobs and creating new ones. Information Technology and the U.S. Workforce explores the interactions between technological, economic, and societal trends and identifies possible near-term developments for work. This report emphasizes the need to understand and track these trends and develop strategies to inform, prepare for, and respond to changes in the labor market. It offers evaluations of what is known, notes open questions to be addressed, and identifies promising research pathways moving forward.

Identifying Three Trends in Information Technology

Introduction, artificial intelligence in hiring practice and machine learning.

As part of the business or other enterprises, information technology (IT) is a rapidly progressing industry in the modern technology-based society. It implies the use of “computers and other devices for exchanging, retrieving, storing, and networking of electronic data” (Morkes, 2018, p. 23).

IT engages with various companies, ranging from start-ups to large international corporations, by providing them with the most efficient information technology systems. The critical elements of the IT industry include broad sectors such as hardware, software, services, infrastructure, and information, as well as business objectives. As an IT professional, one must attain strong analytical and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and stay current on the latest technology and trends due to ongoing changes and new implications of the constantly evolving industry.

The IT market in the United States is considered the largest and the most advanced in the international arena, earning $1.5 trillion in revenue in 2017 (Morkes 2018). Therefore, the steady growth of IT is inherently linked with the high performance from the major markets such as financial services and insurance providers. According to Vault, the demand for information technology consultants will increase up until 2021 due to the rise of mergers and acquisitions in other industries. Hence, it is essential to examine the crucial trends of the information technology industry for a proper awareness of the current situation and better performance results for the permanent development of one’s career path.

Blockchain is the emerging technology that can exclude large amounts of record-keeping, save money, and intrude the IT industry in a completely new way since Internet emergence. It is the distributed ledger database that manages an ever-increasing list of records that cannot be changed. Its mechanism implies each entry to be time fixed and connected to the previous entry. This technology can be either an open system that allows anyone to add the information or a controlled one for the users with permission. This is a dynamic trend in IT due to the raised interest in cryptocurrency, a digital cash system that is commonly used as a replacement or a complement to traditional currency.

Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency in today’s business world. Hence, blockchain technology contributes to cryptocurrency transactions. Moreover, this technology can also be applied to other fields, such as the international shipping industry, finance, and even the jewelry industry. Loosvelt (2019) states that the ability to manage an initial coin offering, create new cryptocurrencies, and write proposal plans for technologies employing blockchain, are crucial skills for such industry (par. 3). It was reported that blockchain was the second amongst the top 20 fastest-growing job skills providing high-rate salaries for its specialists. Such a tendency was caused by the growing interest in blockchain technology; however, it is still in the early stages of development with specific obstacles.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are two separate notions; however, they are often used as interchangeable. As described by Maldonado (2019), “advances in artificial intelligence are driving the future of businesses” (par. 1).

Considering AI an older and broader concept, it implies the programmed machines that are able to perform tasks in a smart way by imitating human decision-making processes. This technology facilitates multiple possibilities and implications for every aspect of the company. AI is widely used to assist in the recruiting efforts, as it contributes to developing the problem-solving skills for computers, such as software applying machine learning to review the resumes and filter the applicants. Hence, AI might be a time-saving approach for the recruiters and HR tasks.

In the interview by Maldonado (2019) of the founder and CEO of Performia CIS, Vladimir Sidorenko, it was mentioned that the great number of AI applications are based upon the category of algorithms. Besides, gender and racial bias were noted in AI that is critical in the gap between men, women, and minorities in tech. Sidorenko classified four primary tips for HR teams aiming at overcoming the diversity gap, including “cultivating trust in AI, building a culture around skill-building, implementing diversity training initiatives, and reaching out to community organizations” (Maldonado, 2019, par. 5).

Furthermore, he is discussing the ways of improvement for the current AI landscape. Machine learning, on the other hand, is a method of data analysis that involves AI to promote studying data by computers, identify patterns, and take actions with minimal or no interference by humans. For example, machine learning applications can determine the text’s meaning or the music’s sentiments. Thus, the AI and machine learning advancements led to the enhanced demands for IT professionals with this expertise as well by providing top emerging job positions.

To conclude, the emergence of new products and trends, as well as new career opportunities, are arising from the technological achievements, modifying preferences of the consumer and business, and other progressing facets of the IT industry. The emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, are amongst the current trends of IT that are influencing the future of the technology-based business scene. These trends are based upon the critical constant of technology and tech careers, which is the change that results in multiple technological advancements, transforming or disrupting the modern IT landscape.

Emerging Trends in Technology Essay

This paper proposes to take up the matter of emerging trends in technology and concerns itself just with mobile, or wireless technology. From a non-entity a few decades ago, this is now the current trend of human lives and could rightly take pride in having around 2 billion subscribers worldwide, and this rate is increasing exponentially with each passing day.

Speed of transmission, relative ease and convenience of operations, and the ability to rapidly convert and transmit information to any part of the world are the scoring points for mobile. Its combination with the internet has raised the prospects of carrying out virtual business from one’s palms.

While mobile technology has tremendous potential for a wide range of applications, hitherto untapped, which could add to the quality and convenience of human living, it is also necessary that it needs to be sustainable and progressive over a while, and not get relegated just as the wire technology has been made secondary, because of its advent and consolidation in modern living.

Introduction

Future advancements in mobile or wireless technology promise to be a hot subject for the future of the globe, especially about lifestyle and conduct of business.

It is seen that this technology is one of the major innovations and creative developments of the 21st Century and yet has tremendous potential for enhanced benefits to human society in the future.

Description of mobile technology

In the future it is believed that greater use of the following main types of wireless communication networks could be as follows:

  • Laptop computers.
  • Personal Digital Assistants (PDA’s).
  • Smartphones with greater competencies and capabilities than conventional wireless mobiles.
  • Global positioning system (GPS) devices. (Mobile Technology: What is Mobile Technology and What are the Benefits).
  • Payments made through wireless pay points.

Justification

It is believed that such kind of advanced use of technology could be most beneficial to parties in the business. A sales manager could make a sales presentation through his laptop or could use it to send PDF files to customers.

It is thus seen that mobile technology has revolutionized the way business is done in the 21st century and has made quantum leaps in the progression of human lifestyles and business communications. Some two decades ago, nobody dreamt of owning a mobile phone, but today there are nearly “1.4 billion” who required it for their personal and business matters. Mobile technology has surpassed “landlines” in sheer quantum and relatively shorter periods. (Smyth, p.ix).

It is seen that the business world is becoming more competitive and e-commerce and internet trading would play very important roles in the future. This augurs well for mobile technology, now in the third generation since the synergy between the internet and mobile technology has ushered in a powerful and speedy combination of mobile and data services. This could ensure that users are assured of the best of both mobile and data networking servicing, which could even enhance current ways of doing global business.

Specific products that are part of this trend

The latest mobile know-how that connects devices with advanced searching-and-tracking functions. The main intention o this is to make good use of internet competencies in a handheld mobile device.

“Choose a building and touch a floor and it tells you more details of the building. You can use it when you want to know a car model, an insect name, what kind of food is served at a restaurant and how much, who built a bridge, etc.” (Futuristic Mobile Device with Advanced Search Function).

Thus it could be said that the future of mobile technology has immense potential for both private and business applications. Having made robust contributions in the field of electronic telecommunications, it is now poised to make more crucial offerings for the overall progress, development, and harmonious co-existence of mankind in the universe. However, caution and circumspection also need to be exercised to ensure that the positive attributes of mobile technology are sustainable and harnessable for the cause of mankind, without which later improved technologies could replace it in the future, just as the mobile technology has itself relegated wire technology.

The software is now so rapidly evolving that quarterly trend forecasts seem so redundant before they even go on life as a blog post or article. As technology evolves, it can be created and enhanced quickly, and rates are that before they eventually become exponential.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)   has been strongly influenced in recent years but is still a trend to be seen as the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the way we live, work and play are only at an early stage. Certain types of AI have been developed to which we will refer, including machine learning. AI refers to computer systems programmed to mimic the understanding of people and execute tasks such as pictures, speech, patterns, and decision-making. Such tasks can be done faster and more accurately than people can.

AI is a component of what we commonly refer to as automation and a hot topic due to the potential reduction of jobs. The artificial intelligence programmer is another such feature. Many people say that he will challenge data scientists who need skilled professionals rapidly. The AI group is machine learning. Computers are programmed to recognize something that is not meant to be achieved through machine learning: by patterns and observations into data. Therefore, two types of knowledge were tracked and unattended.

In some instances, we have seen drawbacks in cloud computing, as the information we manage continues to grow. Advanced computing has been developed to address these problems to eliminate network software jamming and access to information at a data centre.
