My greatest reason to go to the library is that I can read my favourite books there. My school's library is tastefully decorated. It is a sizable hall that is well illuminated and ventilated. There is a huge section in the middle intended for seating children. We sit in rows most of the time. The books are arranged all around the seating area.

Our library is staffed by a librarian and a caretaker. Our Librarian is a sympathetic person. When we request one of the books, she always beams and gives us the book. The library also provides a selection of newspapers, journals, and current events in both English and Hindi. With the exception of those marked "could not be issued," the majority of the books in our library can be signed out. If the book is lost, harmed, or delivered too late, we are charged with a fine. There are many different types of books in the library and I love spending time there.

Essay on My School Library

Where can a student find a dimension of knowledge to scout apart from the classrooms? It is the school library that offers so many universes of books that a student can traverse and find enlightenment along with the ultimate reward of knowledge. Libraries are the prime element of a school’s infrastructure. It contains the respective books that students might need to enhance their knowledge in a particular subject.

They also find entertainment and an unfound treasure of emotions from different types of books. This is what a school library means to us. We have discovered so many types of emotions when a school library introduced us to the world of unlimited knowledge trapped in white pages.

It is not an easy task to manage a library. It is fascinating that there are certain bachelor’s courses that aspirants have to study to understand how a library works and how it is managed. Library sciences are one of the most popular subjects taught by the leading universities in the world. It is an important aspect of learning that we have in our schools. An educational institution without a library is thus incomplete.

In a library, we find a plethora of books from different genres.  We find nonfiction and fiction books. We find biographies and autobiographies. We discover books related to literature and poetry. There are reference books that link the literature of one book to the others. Books related to all kinds of subjects are available in a school. The more advanced an institution is, the more advanced its library becomes. A full-fledged library contains books for all genres that school students generally like to read. From literature to art, subject-based books to entertainment, you will find different choices.

Why is a library important? A school is a place where knowledge is delivered. There is no limit in gathering knowledge. The classroom sessions are there to encourage us to learn something new about a particular concept. The enthusiastic students then find their way out to the library to gather more knowledge regarding the same concept and enhance their understanding. This is considered to be the first step in professional development via effective learning. Hence, apart from classrooms, a library is another platform for knowledge delivery and skill development.

Libraries are generally invaded by enthusiastic scholars to find more knowledge regarding a new concept. Their enthusiasm to seek knowledge and learn new concepts via scouting new books is the first step to professional development via effective learning. This is what a school also promotes among the students. The authority keeps special periods for the library where the students will find books of their choices and read them. These young minds are also allowed to take the books home and read them with the utmost enthusiasm.

In our school, we have a huge library. It is probably the most peaceful place in our entire school. We find so many students reading new books of their choices with an undiluted concentration. It has a very encouraging environment for those who love to read new books and gather information. Our school has an excellent collection of different genres of books apart from the subjects taught.

We like to borrow the books from the authorities and take them home to enjoy the genres we admire. It helps us to develop personally and mentally. We get a beautiful way to scout different thoughts and concepts of many authors and poets. We also learn about the fascinating facts of our planet and the universe. It is the library that provides us with the best books related to our level to make our knowledge grow and help us understand different concepts accordingly.

My favourite section is the cabinet with novels and plays. I love reading short stories, novels and dramas. So, I just inquired the librarian to suggest an interesting book to read. She gave me ‘Pygmalion, a play by George Bernard Shaw.

What we read from books in the school library is an integral part of the school curricula, hence the importance of writing essay on my school library.

My school library

My school has a large library, it is very organized, and technology is used in it, as it contains a large number of books, magazines and scientific research, in addition to the electronic library, where books can also be read using a computer.

The school library is characterized by calm and order. All students abide by the rules of the library, such as calm and not disturbing others, not eating food and drinks inside the library, and the most important rule is to preserve books and not destroy them.

School library

The school library is of great importance in education , and we can mention the description of the library in the essay on my school library as follows:

  • The library is a place designed to learn and increase knowledge, to research, and to benefit from the experiences of past scholars.
  • The library provides us with the references and resources needed to write any research.
  • The library is the best place where we can keep all the sciences of mankind.
  • The library includes many references, books and volumes.
  • In my school library there are many books such as books on languages, medicine, politics, history, science and technology, physics and chemistry, cooking and art, literature, poetry, short and long novels.
  • The library is a place for communication between students, making new friends, and it is possible to hold discussions or seminars.

The importance of the school library

There is no doubt that the library gains its importance from the importance of reading, as the library provides you with valuable books that you cannot buy, and also provides you with rare books, which cannot be obtained.

And in the essay on my school library we will mention the importance of reading in educating and raising awareness among individuals.

  • The school library is part of the educational process, in which the student can rely on himself in obtaining information and data.
  • The school library helps students develop their mental abilities.
  • The student can get reliable information on any topic he wants to know.
  • The school library develops in the student a love of reading, searching for information, analysis and conclusion.
  • The library provides a good opportunity to view recent books and research.

School library and technology development

There is no doubt that technological development is used in all areas of life, and therefore the school library has benefited from this technological development, and the school has provided a large number of computers in the library.

Thus, the student can use the computer to search for the book he wants to read, as well as watch documentaries, and educational videos related to the subject of the book he is reading.

Advantages of having a school library

There are many advantages to having a library in the school, because the role that the school library plays is a complementary role to the educational process and in the essay on my school library I will mention some of the benefits of the library for both students in particular, and society in general.

  • The school library helps the student to gain a lot of general information.
  • The student can educate himself, by reading books in various fields.
  • The school library helps students to understand the educational subjects easily.
  • The student can use the books in the school library to write research papers and articles.

At the end of the essay on my school library, I showed the important role that the school library plays in education , as well as the importance of the school library.

Writing the essay on my school library is very important, so I hope you benefited from this topic.

Essay on My School Library

Essay on my school library

My school has a very big library. It is on the ground floor of the school building. It has hundreds of books. It has books on all subjects. It also has a number of storybooks and magazines.

Inside the library, there are rows of tables and chairs. Big cabinets are kept all around the library. Books are alphabetically arranged in these cabinets.

Students of all classes visit the library as per schedule. We all have library cards which we carry to school every day. We can borrow one book at a time from the school library.

Our librarian is a very nice lady. She has a lot of knowledge about books. She makes sure all books are returned to the library on time. She maintains the library very well. Many a time she helps us in locating and selecting books.

I love to visit my school library, as this is one place where I can sit and study peacefully without any disturbance.

Essay on “Our School Library” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Our School Library

A library is a temple of learning. A book is the life blood of an author. A book is a treasure of wisdom. So for having the best book every school  has a library. A library is a place where books on different subjects are kept. The school library is for the use of  students and teachers.

Our school has a good library. It is housed in a big hall. The books are kept in many big wooden almirahs. Our librarian manages the library. He arranges books. The  almirahs have glass panes. Besides text books we have books on travels, biographies, history, geography, science etc, in each library almirah. Topics of Subjects are written to find books easily. Different subjects and Topics have different codes.

All the books are arranged subject –wise. Each almirah has a catalogue. One almirah has books on teaching and reference books. They are only for teachers.

There is a class library system in our school. The students do not get the books directly from the librarian. Once a month the class teacher goes to the library. He selects four or five sets of books for his class students. The sets are well- graded. The teacher finds no difficulty in the selection of books. Each set has thirty books. The teacher issues the books once a week to the students in the class library period. The students are expected to read these books during the week. They return them in the  following week. Nobody is allowed to keep a book for more than two weeks.

Our library has a reading room. It is full of tables and chairs. The newspapers magazines and periodicals are placed on the big tables for the use of boys. The walls of the room are  decorated with good mottos and paintings. There is a row of photos of different authors, poets who developed their life for literature and are known at world and Indian level.

The school library is a good way to give general knowledge to the boys. Students beget studious habits. It creates a taste for good books after school life. Biographies from character of  the students. the library creates love for books among the weak boys. It gives chance to make best use of the leisure time. It gives us day –to-day news of the world. Different reference books and dictionaries make our library very rich.

I ma, in fact, proud of my school library. I have learnt punctuality, regularity, habit of hard working and moral teachings from books. It has created love in me for books. A good library in indeed an asset to a school. Our school library hall is very decorated and attractive. We never feel tired here. Beside it, there is class library. We have also poor boys library from where we can borrow books for a whole session.

Essay No. 2

I study in a big school. The library in the school is also a very big one. It has over 50,000 books in it. It is on the first floor of our school and occupies almost half the floor. The classrooms are all on the ground floor. This keeps the library calm and quiet and the noise of the students does not reach here.

The library is huge hall and divided into sections with glass partitions. It has a reading room and one room for the librarian and the staff of the library.

Different sections in the hall are meant for different kinds of books which are placed on iron shelves. One section is meant for languages, one for literature, one for humanities, on for sciences, for sports and so on.

All kinds of books are available in our school library such as books on literature, history, civics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, painting, music, sports, magic, geography, zoology etc.

The biggest section of books in the library contains children’s books. These books cover stores, adventure, fairy tales etc.

I visit the library very often because it is a charming place; I sit and read a book in my free period. Once a week we get a chance to issue a book of our choice.

The library also contributes to a number of magazines and newspapers. A book is given to a student for a week. We have to look after the book and not let it get torn. The magazines and newspapers have to read in the library itself.

Our librarian is a kind man. He helps us locate the books we need. In case of any problems he consults the catalogue to help the students in locating a book of their choice.

I like my school library very much.

Essay No. 3

My School Library

A library is a must for a good school. No school is complete without a library. A well equipped library is a great asset to a school. It is equally useful for students and teachers both. It helps to develop reading habit. It increases their knowledge. For teachers too , a school library is of great use.

It is generally seen that in spite of the library facilities available in good schools, the students rarely take benefit out of it. Very few students and teachers are seen absorbed in studies in the  libraries. The causes can be many. The work- load on the students is so much that they do not get any time to look for books and magazines or they do not find the matter available in the books catering to their taste. Whatever the reason may be, the trend is quite unhealthy and needs attention.

We are fortunate to have a very good library in our school. Our school library is  housed in a spacious room on ground floor. It is divided into two sections. One section contains books for students while in the other section there are reference books for teachers. The reading room is adjacent to the Library Room.

There are separate tables and chairs for students and teachers where they can sight and read books. The reading room has a large round table. Chairs are arranged around it. The reading room is supplied with a number of Newspapers and Magazines. there are six newspaper stands on which newspapers are placed. Magazines and journals are placed on the table. The reading Room can accommodate more than fifty persons at a time.

There are more than fifteen thousand books in our school library. Books are arranged serially and subject wise in almirahs. The name of the subject and that of the language are written on the alimirahs. Each students is issued a Library Card. At a time , a student is issued a library Card. At a time , a student can get two books form the library. Books are issued for a period of two weeks. Dictionaries and reference books are not issued.

Books are issued to the students during school hours only. Each class has its turn once a week Besides, two periods a week are allotted to each class for the Reading Room. Students can read newspapers and magazines in their vacant periods and during the recess also.

Our librarian knows all the books in the library. He is very gentle and kind- hearted.  He is always ready to guide the students in the  selection of books. An assistant helps the librarian in his work.

Our school library is a place of great attrition  for students as well as teachers. Most of the students devote their vacant periods to reading newspapers and magazines. this has helped a lot in improving the school discipline. Teachers to spend their spare time in the library. They refresh their knowledge. Thus high educational standards in our school are the result of an excellent library.

Essay No. 04

Our school library is housed in a big room. It is room of recreation and information. There is a big table in the centre.

There are more than five thousand books on almost all subjects in our library. The books are kept in the almirahs. The newspaper and many magazine stands are placed in a corner.

Sixty students can sit on benches. They read newspapers and magazines. There is a pin drop silence in the library.

There are five big almirahs. The almirahs are made of Iron and glass. Books are arranged on them.

The library is looked after by the librarian. He guides in selecting good books.

The students return the old books. They borrow fresh books. A student can borrow two books at a time.

I visit the library regularly. I like my school library very much.

Essay No. 05

Our School Library

Even since I was admitted to this school, I was very keen to see the spacious hall, where only the students of the higher classes were allowed to go during the lunch hour. To others it was something very important, where only one could go with the prior permission of the class-teacher. It was on July 20, that I got a chance of peeping through the glass-panes of big door.

I found out that there were some heavy and some small volumes. These were liketoys which even my younger brothers and sisters would like to have. Most of the other books were of an average size and I found that someone was gazing at me.

I could read from the name-plate that he was the librarian. He was having heaps of books on all sides of his table and in shelves. It looked as if he was drowned in a sea of books.

Here I remembered. This library had a Reference Section for teachers also. In all, there were about 6,000 books on various subjects. I was happy that I saw the library that day.

Once Centers Of Soviet Propaganda, Moscow's Libraries Are Having A 'Loud' Revival

Moscow's Fyodor Dostoevsky Library was renovated in 2013 and now sees some 500 visitors a day, up from just a dozen or so per day in earlier years. The library hosts language clubs, readings, lectures and concerts.

The Chistye Prudy neighborhood is one of Moscow's liveliest, with restaurants and cafes clustered along a boulevard with a tram line and grand old apartment buildings.

Before the bars fill up in the evenings, the neighborhood's most popular hangout is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Library, named for the 19th century Russian writer. While young people huddle over laptops as city traffic growls past the large windows in the main reading hall, a theater group is rehearsing a play in another room. A constant stream of visitors comes through the entrance, with the front door banging behind them.

"It's one of the best libraries here in Moscow just because it has changed so much," says Alsu Gorbatyuk, 40, an English teacher who popped in after a visit to a skating rink. "I suppose that right now, Moscow is one of the centers of library culture."

Until recently, that culture seemed doomed to become a relic of the analog past. After Russia's rocky transition from Communism and the rise of the Internet, there seemed little use for the more than 400 city libraries as public spaces fell into neglect and Russians found new sources of information. Unexpectedly, Moscow's libraries are now experiencing a transformation from musty houses of Soviet propaganda into bustling work spaces for 21st century city-dwellers.

"People are voting with their feet, we get a lot of visitors," says Andrei Lisitsky, the director of the Dostoevsky Library. "But this isn't just a busy place like a train station, church or cafe. It's a place for creating new ideas about the urban space and a center of informal learning."

An outside view of the Dostoevsky Library in Moscow. In recent years, the city's team in charge of libraries has discarded almost all traditional conceptions of what a public library is.

In recent years, the city's team in charge of libraries has discarded almost all traditional concepts of what a public library is.

"We have a different idea from the way things used to be. A library can be a loud place," says Maria Rogachyova, the official who oversees city libraries. "Of course there should be some quiet nooks where you can focus on your reading, but our libraries also host a huge amount of loud events."

The Dostoevsky Library hosts three to four events a day, including language clubs, readings and lectures. Once an acoustic music concert got so loud that there were noise complaints from the hookah lounge in the basement, Lisitsky recalls, laughing.

If a dozen or so people per day came through the doors of the Dostoevsky Library before its renovation in 2013, Lisitsky says it now gets 500 daily visitors, who are drawn by its modern facilities and evening events.

Andrei Akritov, 22, an aspiring standup comedian from out of town, says he discovered the library when he walked by and saw people reading inside.

"I'm staying at a hostel, and it's impossible to concentrate there," he says. Working on his monologues, he says, "Here I can spend three, four, even five hours."

The Dostoevsky Library was part of a pilot project to renew Moscow libraries. The city commissioned a Russian-Dutch design bureau to do away with the library's original floral curtains, potted plants and mustard-yellow paint in favor of a contemporary look with open stacks, modern lighting and white walls. Opening hours were extended until 10 p.m.

The library now has its own website , Facebook page and even YouTube channel .

"Moscow libraries aren't competing with modern technology, they're trying to use it," says Rogachyova. "The rise of electronic media shouldn't spell the death of libraries as public spaces."

While some employees certainly preferred whiling away their time knitting in empty libraries, she says, most of the changes have taken place thanks to the initiative of librarians, who came up with new ideas to attract visitors. Only last May did the mayor's office allocate an additional 500 million rubles (about $7.5 million) per year for library renovation.

"Our job is to develop the most democratic and accessible cultural locations for Muscovites," Rogachyova says. "This isn't about libraries for the sake of libraries, as it sometimes seemed in the past. We need to listen to what Muscovites' needs are, so they start loving us."

The city's libraries aren't just competing with the city's myriad parks and museums, she says, but also with the lure of the couch and TV set. That has meant coming up with events to attract professionals and families, putting catalogs online and even opening onsite coffee shops.

"The library of my childhood was a lot more boring, and I wouldn't have imagined it as a place to spend time," says Ksenia Yeltsova, 20, a student who likes to study at the Dostoevsky Library. "This isn't just a place to check out a book but where you can work, learn something new, listen to a concert and meet people."

While Moscow is at the vanguard of rethinking its libraries, Lisitsky says the trend is picking up across Russia.

"Probably the most negative legacy of the Soviet Union was that people expected the state to take care of everything," he says. "Now they are coming to understand that they can solve many of their own problems without the government."

And the public space where people can meet and discuss solutions, Lisitsky says, is their local library.

Harvard removes cover made of human skin from 1800s book stored in library

Don’t judge a book by its cover — unless, of course, it’s made from human skin.

Harvard University announced it removed a binding made of the skin of a deceased woman from the 19th-century book “Des Destinées de l’Ame,” which they house in their library.

The Ivy League school “concluded that the human remains used in the book’s binding no longer belong in the Harvard Library collections, due to the ethically fraught nature of the book’s origins and subsequent history,” Harvard said in a statement on their website.

The book, written by French novelist Arsène Houssay, translates into “Destinies of the Soul” and has been in the school’s library since 1934.

The book’s first owner, a French doctor named Dr. Ludovic Bouland, bound the book with skin from an anonymous dead patient without her consent.

“The Library is now in the process of conducting additional provenance and biographical research into the book, Bouland, and the anonymous female patient, as well as consulting with appropriate authorities at the University and in France to determine a final respectful disposition of these human remains,” the school’s statement continued.

Until recently, the book was available to people who asked for it for whatever reason.

“Lore suggests that decades ago, students employed to page collections in Houghton’s stacks were hazed by being asked to retrieve the book without being told it included human remains,” the statement revealed.

In a Q&A issued by Harvard , Tom Hyry, an archivist at the school’s Houghton Library, called the decision about the book an “unusual circumstance.”

“ The core problem with the volume’s creation was a doctor who didn’t see a whole person in front of him and carried out an odious act of removing a piece of skin from a deceased patient, almost certainly without consent, and used it in a book binding that has been handled by many for more than a century. We believe it’s time the remains be put to rest,” he said.

After 2014 tests confirmed the book was bound with skin, Harvard had a more flippant response, The Guardian reported .

“Good news for fans of anthropodermic bibliopegy, bibliomaniacs and cannibals alike,” the school said at the time.

They have since issued a mea culpa for their “sensationalistic, morbid and humorous tone.”

“We apologize on behalf of Harvard Library for past failures in our stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being at the center,” said Hyry.

Tired of Sucking It Up as a Climber, I’ve Embraced a Softer Strength

An illustration of a woman sitting above the tree line on a mountain slope.

By Beth Rodden

Ms. Rodden is a professional climber and the author of the forthcoming memoir, “A Light Through the Cracks.”

I don’t know what time it was when my husband at the time, the rock climber Tommy Caldwell, finally scrambled over the summit. The sun had risen sometime during the first part of the climb and had set again hours later. I squinted up at him, tired eyes burning as I watched his shadow moving in the beam of my headlight. He had just completed the second free ascent of the Direct Route on the northwest face of Half Dome, a 2,000-foot climb in Yosemite National Park.

We were elite professional climbers, and this was what we did best. Sometimes we made history together; other times I supported him in his feats, belaying and carrying all the gear. Either way, the days were long and hard.

The climber Todd Skinner spent 61 days in 1993 working to establish the Direct Route, then considered the most difficult big wall climb in the world, before reaching the top. On our climb in 2007, our 2 a.m. wake-up, more than 24 hours earlier, hadn’t even felt all that early to me. Sleeping in past midnight? That meant what I was getting up for wasn’t that rad, that hard core. Tommy made it to the top in a day, adding a move that made the climb more difficult than the one Mr. Skinner had pioneered. It felt routine.

Hanging in the middle of Half Dome was an ordinary thing. Ascending ropes with bloody knuckles and a heavy pack thousands of feet off the ground was as conventional to me as grabbing the bananas and apples in the produce section: just part of my day. Climbers pride themselves on being better than normal people. Not just in the “I climbed a mountain and you didn’t” type of way, but in the fabric of how we approach life. How we eat, where we sleep, the stories we walk away with: It’s all better.

By the time I was in my mid-20s, I was a walking archetype of how to succeed in that world because of the belief system I followed: suck it up, persevere, win. I was used to pushing the level of climbing further, used to doing things that no other women had done — and even, a couple of times, things that no guys had done.

I specialized in free climbing, a particular (and particularly challenging) discipline that requires a climber to rely on her gear only for protection from a fall, not for any assistance in moving up the rock. I had free-climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan three times, by three independent routes. Elsewhere in Yosemite, I had established a new route in 2008, Meltdown , that was widely viewed then as the hardest traditional climb in the world, not repeated until 2018. (“Traditional” meaning I depended on a rope suspended by gear I placed myself, rather than on bolts permanently installed in the rock.) For a decade, I had appeared in climbing films and on the pages of climbing magazines. Pushing through the pain, sacrificing my body, shoving my fear away: It’s all what made me better than the rest. I liked being better than the rest.

As we stumbled to the car after that daylong effort on the Direct Route, my arms and legs felt tired, my mouth parched. I was good at this. I didn’t need to eat much food, drink much water. I was a low-maintenance girl. I always got patted on the back for not taking up too much space and being able to suffer with the best of them. There were times when I was climbing that I wept with fear, with fatigue, with regret. But when I did, I tried to hide it. I’d had that instinct from my earliest climbing days, even before I survived a days-long kidnapping during an expedition to Kyrgyzstan. After I made it home (Tommy had pushed one of the armed kidnappers off a cliff — a fall we later learned he had survived — enabling our group of four climbers to escape), I had more than doubled down. Scorning and hiding my feelings, shoving them down, felt admirable to me then. I’d been told it was strength. It felt like strength.

There wasn’t much room for women or feelings at the top of the sport back then. A handful of us were landing on the covers of magazines or vying to be the token featured woman at a climbing film festival, but I learned early on that as good as I was at actually climbing, I needed to be able to suffer to stand out. Climbing through a broken foot? Amazing, here’s a raise. Did you hear how many hours they went without food and water for the summit? Make a feature movie about them. As much as logistics and physical prowess, subscribing to the bravado was part of the job description in climbing. And for years, I was all in.

I can’t say there was one moment, a specific event that made me start to question the “suck it up, Rodden” theme song I had lived by for so long. I got divorced, and eventually remarried; I got injured over and over. After years of injuries I had a child, and that led to relearning my body. Maybe it was the scale of all those changes in my life that forced me to reconsider the way I’d always done things, or maybe I just got fed up with the facade. Why was it noble to climb through cracks on El Cap soaked with climbers’ urine, but leaking while jogging postpartum was something to be ashamed of?

Gradually, I began to question the old mentality. I began to be more open about what I found value in, and learned to share my pain and my fears with friends instead of hiding them behind a perma-smile. I started to be kinder to myself, and to be frank that, as effective as it had been for me and my career, I just didn’t see the point in suffering for the sake of a climb anymore. In letting go of that, I was surprised to find a new kind of strength — something perhaps truer and more durable than the ability to just plow through.

I am still a professional climber, though I haven’t been at the peak of the sport in a very long time. I still have goals, and I still love the feeling of trying hard and succeeding, but I love easy days at the crag with a group of girlfriends just as much. My sponsors have found value in partnering with me beyond the number grade assigned to a climb that I’ve done. Instead, we’ve realized together that none of these topics that have plagued the community for so long will go away if left in silence. Making the sport more inclusive, speaking about the ways that climbing can and should evolve as it grows in popularity, is my current project.

This past winter found me injured and on the sidelines yet again. But this time, instead of hobbling around with a crutch and a cast on my leg or having a finger splinted up, I was carrying a foam pad wherever I went, so that I could easily get into a horizontal position. Ten years after I’d given birth, my postpartum bladder prolapse symptoms had returned. Naturally, people would ask why I wasn’t climbing. Years earlier, I would have been mortified. But now I answered bluntly: “I blew out my pelvic floor .” To my surprise, most everyone would sit down, ask what that meant, how it happened, what the symptoms were, what recovery would look like.

I’m not the only one who’s changed. Climbing has come so far in the 30 years since I started in the sport. Today, instead of getting dropped by their sponsors, women can continue their careers with vigor after having children. Mental health awareness and therapy are widely accepted (which is imperative in a community that experiences so much death and trauma), and now, perhaps even conversations about vulnerabilities like perimenopause and prolapse don’t have to be hidden. I like to think we’re starting to embrace a softer kind of strength. Maybe taking care of ourselves, whatever that looks like, can now be as celebrated as dodging death for a summit.

Beth Rodden is a professional climber and the author of the forthcoming memoir, “A Light Through the Cracks.”

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Kingston Library Martin Laforse Memorial Scholarship Fund will offer two $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Kingston High School seniors, according to an announcement.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarship can receive an application at the school’s Guidance Office. Applicants are required to submit an essay in 500 words or less, reflecting on how a reading or library experience affected their life.

According to the announcement, scholarships will be awarded based not only on the quality of the essay but on the applicant’s current academic standing, as well as financial need and a letter of recommendation. Scholarship recipients will be announced during an award ceremony at Kingston High in early June.

Book made with dead woman's skin removed from Harvard Library amid probe of human remains found at school

By Li Cohen

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 8:59 AM EDT / CBS News

Harvard Library says it has removed a book that's been in its collection for nearly a century that is partially made with human skin that was taken from a deceased hospital patient without consent. The book's space in the library has long been in question, as it was bound with a woman's skin and included a handwritten note from its first owner saying, "a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering."

The library announced that it would remove the book, "Des Destinées de L'âme" ("Destinies of the Soul"), earlier this month. The book, published by Arsène Houssaye in 1879, was not originally made of skin. That part was added by the book's first owner, French physician Dr. Ludovic Bouland, who, according to Harvard Library, "bound the book with skin he took without consent from the body of a deceased female patient in a hospital where he worked."

master-headlines-16x9.png

Bouland included a handwritten note in the volume that says, "a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering," Tom Hyry, associate university librarian for archives and special collections, said in a Harvard Library update.

"Evidence indicates that Bouland bound the book with skin, taken from a woman, which he had acquired as a medical student," Hyry said. "A memo accompanying the book written by John Stetson, which has since been lost, told us that Bouland took this skin from the body of an unknown deceased woman patient from a French psychiatric hospital."

Bouland died in 1933 and the book was added to Harvard's collection in 1934 on deposit. That note also included a description of the process that was used to treat the skin so that it could be bound with the book. The book was formally donated to the university in 1954 and Harvard Library said that it tested the binding in 2014 to confirm that it was bound with human remains.

Until recently, the book had been available to "anyone who asked for it," Harvard Library said, "regardless of their reason for wishing to consult it."

"Library lore suggests that decades ago, students employed to page collections in Houghton's stacks were hazed by being asked to retrieve the book without being told it included human remains," the library states. "Harvard Library acknowledges past failures in its stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being whose remains were used for its binding. We apologize to those adversely affected by these actions."

Anne-Marie Eze, associate librarian of Harvard's Houghton Library, said the book's removal was the culmination of years-long efforts and "as part of the University's larger project of addressing human remains in its collections."

In 2022, the university published a report about human remains found in university collections. A committee found remains of 15 people who "may have been enslaved" in the Peabody Museum, which also holds "one of the nation's largest collections of human remains of Native American individuals." Most of the human remains found across the university collections system are rooted in archaeological context or are used for educational purposes.

The book was not included in that category – and it's not the only piece of human remains believed to be in the library system.

"There is a bone fragment purportedly of Saint Sebastian (ca. 3rd century) in a medallion reliquary," the report states.

The library says that it's now conducting additional research into the book, Bouland and the female patient whose skin was removed, and that the skin itself is in "secure storage at Harvard Library." They are also working with France to "determine a final respectful disposition of these human remains."

Eze said that the book has been "fully digitized" – sans binding – and that those scans have been made publicly available. All images of the skin have been removed from the online catalog and blog posts, and the book itself will only be made available to researchers in the future without its cover.

"The core problem with the volume's creation was a doctor who didn't see a whole person in front of him and carried out an odious act of removing a piece of skin from a deceased patient, almost certainly without consent, and used it in a book binding that has been handled by many for more than a century," Hyry said. "We believe it's time the remains be put to rest."
