The end game on the road to March Madness has been laid out for area boys and girls basketball teams.

The IHSA has announced assignments and hosts for sectionals and supersectionals as well as regional sites. The sectional seeds and regional assignments will be released in February.

Mendota will host a Class 2A boys sectional, which will include Bureau Valley , Hall and Princeton along with Morrison, Oregon, Rock Falls, Seneca and Erie-Prophetstown in subsectional A. E-P and Hall are the regional hosts.

The Mendota Sectional will meet the winner of the Elmhurst Timothy Christian Sectional at the Class 2A Sterling Supersectional.

Fieldcrest was assigned to the Clifton Central subsectional A.

In Class 1A, some area boys teams have been assigned to the Hanover River Ridge Sectional with Amboy , Annawan, DePue , LaMoille , St. Bede and Sterling Newman all in subsectional A. Wethersfield and Forreston will host the regionals.

Elgin Harvest Academy will host the other Class 1A boys sectional feeding into the DeKalb Supersectional with Earlville, Leland and Ottawa Marquette assigned to the subsectional B.

Henry-Senachine and Putnam County have been assigned to the Class 1A Abingdon-Avon boys subsectional A.

Ottawa will host a Class 3A boys supersectional, assigned to the East Peoria subsectional B with Morris , LaSalle-Peru and Streator . The regional sites are Streator and Sterling.

Hall will also host a Class 2A girls regional as part of the Oregon subsectional A. Other teams assigned there include Bureau Valley, E-P, Mendota, Morrison, Rock Falls, Sandwich, Somonauk and regional host Alleman.

Bureau Valley will host the Class 2A supersectional.

Fieldcrest will host a class 2A regional out of the Canton subsectional B while Seneca was assigned to the Class 2A Tolono Unity subsectional B.

For 1A girls, Amboy, DePue, Putnam County, Serena, St. Bede and regional hosts Earlville and Ottawa Marquette have been assigned to the Gardner-South Wilmington subsectional A. Elgin Harvest Academy will host the Class 1A supersectional.

LaSalle-Peru will host a Class 3A girls supersectional, assigned to the East Peoria subsectional B with Morris, Ottawa and Streator.

Area teams ranked

Rockridge (7-1) drew the No. 1 ranking in the first Class 2A boys poll of the year. The Rockets beat Princeton, which had been ranked No. 1, for the sectional championship last year and took fourth at state.

Fieldcrest (7-0) the Colmone Classic champion, is ranked No. 5 in 2A.

Serena is ranked No. 7 and Fulton is No. 10 in 1A while Sterling received votes in Class 3A.

The Princeton girls (9-2) received votes in Class 2A. Breese Central (9-0) received three first-place votes at No. 1. Petersburg PORTA (9-0) and Peoria Notre Dame (9-0) also received three first-place votes to come in behind No. 2 Nashville (9-0), which did not receive any.

Annawan (9-2) was ranked No. 4 in Class 1A girls while Serena (6-0) tied for No. 7. Galena (7-0) is No. 1.

Analyzing the IHSA Class 4A boys high school basketball sectional assignments

The illinois high school association released its basketball sectional assignments wednesday afternoon. here’s a look at all the changes..

Allen Cunningham/For the Sun-Times

The Illinois High School Association released its basketball sectional assignments Wednesday afternoon. The assignments change significantly every two years. This is a year of change.

Here’s a look at all the area sectionals in Class 4A with the team to beat — as of mid-December — and if there were any winners and losers based on the IHSA’s movement of teams.

Elgin Sectional

Thoughts: This looks like a Mid-Suburban League Conference Tournament, along with a small sprinkling of the North Suburban Conference.

Team to beat: Rolling Meadows

Coach Kevin Katovich’s Mustangs are 7-1 and have a ton of familiarity with a heavy dose of Mid-Suburban League teams. This is where Rolling Meadows should have been playing the past two years (see below).

Biggest winner: Rolling Meadows

Yes, Rolling Meadows wins because it finally is sent where it belongs, both geographically and with the teams that make the most sense. Instead, the IHSA had them traveling and playing the North Shore powers (New Trier, Evanston, Glenbrook South, Loyola).

The bitterness is knowing it sure would have been nice to be in this sectional with last year’s loaded team, led by Cameron Christie.

Rockford Guilford Sectional

Thoughts: This sectional is always quirky, particularly with the two sub-sectionals (Why do we continue to do this in Class 4A?). Once again there won’t be a whole lot of familiarity among many of the teams, and today’s “team to beat” will have to travel 62 miles for its sectional games.

Team to beat: Warren

The Blue Devils have been one of the big, bright stories of the young season, and it’s a story that could extend well into March in a sectional where the host school, Guilford, and DeKalb could pose the biggest threats.

Biggest winner: Warren

It’s a new look for Warren with its sectional assignment, and it’s an opportunity to take advantage of it, especially in a sub-sectional that is certainly less than stellar. At this point it would be stunning if Warren didn’t win its first regional title since 2012.

East Aurora Sectional

Thoughts: The makeup of this sectional is how it looked for years — several years back — both with the teams in it and the host site. It does feel right. This one has the potential to be a dandy but also a seeding nightmare.

Team to beat: Downers Grove North

With just one loss on the season — a tight loss to No. 2 ranked Curie last weekend — DGN and star guard Jack Stanton look to be the favorite over the likes of Benet , Bolingbrook, Waubonsie Valley, West Aurora, Oswego East, Naperville North and others.

Biggest winner: Downers Grove North

A year ago the Trojans worked some magic in winning a brutally tough sectional where Young, Curie, Hinsdale Central and Lyons stood in their way. That sectional was a minefield.

While this East Aurora Sectional is far from being a walk in the park — it’s actually extremely deep — the heavy hitters are missing at the top. That’s good news for a team like DGN where it’s sectional title or bust after the year it had a year ago.

Biggest losers: Benet, Naperville North and Yorkville

If all things remained the same as a year ago, Benet would be a heavy sectional favorite with Lake Park lurking. Now? A rugged game as early as the regional final awaits in this deep field.

Naperville North could look at this sectional assignment and politely ask, “Can we please head back to the Addison Trail Sectional?”

Yorkville came into the season with huge expectations, but they have been flattened in the first three weeks of the season by missing personnel. There is plenty of time to get back in sync. But when it does there will be a whole different postseason look than it had a year ago.

Yorkville was one of three area schools shipped far west to the Moline Sectional last season. This year that sectional seems way more palatable in trying to win its first regional title in 19 years than where it’s headed in 2024.

Rich Sectional

Thoughts: There was a shakeup in this sectional assignment as a couple of past sectionals merged this year, bringing the likes of Joliet West, Romeoville and Lincoln-Way East together with Homewood-Flossmoor, Bloom and Marist.

But, oooooh, this could be fun. A bunch of south suburban teams flexing their March muscle at Rich? There will be no shortage of sleepers in this field.

Team to beat: Homewood-Flossmoor

Yes, a lot will have to come together for the Vikings to uphold this “team to beat” label. But right now, on paper — and with its win over Bloom — HF is that team.

Biggest winner: South suburban fans

This sectional will get the fans in this tradition-rich basketball area pumped for the postseason.

Biggest losers: Romeoville and Joliet West

Just in comparison to a year ago, the sectional path became a whole lot tougher for both the Spartans and Tigers.

Riverside-Brookfield Sectional

Thoughts: Downers Grove North, Hinsdale Central and Lyons did it last year, but will anyone be able to take down the public league powers in this sectional this year?

Team to beat: Curie

The Condors have been impressive and are currently ranked No. 2 in the Super 25.

Biggest winner: The anti-Public League fans.

Virtually all the city powers in Class 4A, including Curie, Young, Kenwood and Simeon — and they even threw Lincoln Park in there for good measure — have been lumped together. Only one can get out of here.

Biggest loser: St. Ignatius

It was inevitable, really. Once St. Ignatius made the move to Class 4A, it likely would be sent to the near-west suburban sectional, one that is always loaded and top-heavy.

But let’s compare last year’s road to Champaign to what it potentially could look like this March for Ignatius.

A year ago the Wolfpack took care of Perspectives-MSA, Westinghouse, Fenwick and Grayslake Central to reach the Class 3A state semifinals. This year? Curie, Young, Kenwood, Riverside-Brookfield, Simeon and Oak Lawn are among the teams standing in their way.

Addison Trail Sectional

Thoughts: This is a very winnable Class 4A sectional. Right now there is only one team ranked in the Super 25.

Team to beat: Lake Park

This is the only team currently ranked, sneaking in at No. 23. But it’s a team that also tasted sectional basketball last year and has a bonafide star in Cam Cerese .

Biggest winner: Lake Park

First, the IHSA shipped perennial power Benet out of this sectional, the very team that ended Lake Park’s season a year ago in the sectional semifinals.

This isn’t the strongest Wheaton-Warrenville South team, always a nuisance in this sectional.

Proviso East is down. The two St. Charles schools were brought in and both are just so-so.

You get the point. This sectional assignment release is a win for the Lancers. But they will have to hold off their DuKane Conference brethren (Batavia and Glenbard North) and a sneaky good York team to advance deep into the state tournament.

Biggest loser: There are no losers in one of the softest 4A sectionals in the state.

Maine South Sectional

Thoughts: As always, there will be some tough sledding for the teams on the north shore as the top eight jockey for position over the next two months. The list of contenders here is lengthy.

Team to beat: Glenbrook North

Even with an upset loss to Prospect on Tuesday, the first of the season for Glenbrook North, this Josh Fridman-led team is a very slight favorite right now over New Trier and Loyola.

Biggest winner: Glenbrook South

Of all the top contenders in this sectional, and there really are quite a few in this sectional, Glenbrook South is the only one that was awarded a regional. The Titans will be able to play that title game in the comfort of their unique home gym.

Biggest loser: Oak Park

This is one of the more bizarre moves the IHSA made with their new sectional assignments. Just take a look at the teams in the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional. Then take a glance at the teams in this Maine South Sectional. And then wonder how this makes sense? The Huskies do get to host a regional.

3 interesting things we noticed with the release of 2024 IHSA basketball playoff assignments

ihsa regional assignments basketball

Assignments were released Wednesday for the Illinois High School Association basketball postseason .

Here are three interesting things that come out of those groupings, from which the IHSA soon will build the 2024 state tournament pairings . The playoffs culminate with the girls and boys state finals next spring in Normal and Champaign.

Four ranked teams, two regionals

Ranked teams litter just one-half of the Class 3A East Peoria Sectional complex.

Four of the state's top 10 teams — including the top three in No. 1 Peoria High, No. 2 Lincoln and No. 3 Galesburg — are all in the same sub-sectional. Those three and No. 6 Morton will be separated into two regional sites in Galesburg and Genseo. Dunlap and Richwoods, which will be looking for an upset, are also in that field.

In the other sub-sectional, No. 9 Washington has the chance to play one of those fellow ranked teams — or a Cinderella squad could make a run to East Peoria.

Peoria basketball: Dunlap girls basketball aims to end playoff drought behind new coach, Division I recruit

Peoria teams give Class 2A a new look

With the Peoria Notre Dame and Manual boys in Class 2A now, both head to the Canton Sectional at Alice Ingersoll Gymnasium and give it a new look.

Along with the Irish and Rams, the sub-sectional also includes Bloomington Central Catholic, Clinton, Downs Tri-Valley, El Paso-Gridley, Eureka, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Illinois Valley Central, Normal U-High, Tremont and Olympia, which will host one of the regionals.

Manual is ranked No. 3 statewide , while PND, which hosts the other regional, is No. 7. Top-rated Taylor Ridge Rockridge is in the other sub-sectional feeding into Canton.

On the girls side, PND slides into 2A and will be in the sub-sectional where Canton is the host. The fourth-ranked Irish will head to either the IVC or Macomb regional. In the other sub-sectional, No. 5 Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Eureka, El Paso-Gridley and Manual are teams to watch.

Peoria basketball: Sisterly bond something special for Peoria Notre Dame's newest basketball teammates

'Peoria' sectional in Pontiac

Add Pontiac to the list of Class 3A schools to host the so-called "Peoria" Sectional.

Pontiac will be home to the Peoria-area 3A boys teams with the winner heading to the Elite Eight. The sub-sectional has so many great teams highlighted by reigning state champ Metamora along with No. 4 Richwoods and No. 10 Morton. Limestone and Geneseo will be the regional hosts.

In the last decade and a half, Galesburg, LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa and Rock Island also have hosted the sectional. Those schools stepped when a Peoria-area school wasn’t using Bradley’s Renaissance Coliseum as the sectional site.

Area Hoops Wrap: IHSA releases basketball postseason assignments

By Jeff Vorva Staff Writer

Most of the holiday basketball tournaments have not even started, but the IHSA has already released its 2023 postseason assignments.

For some area schools, the placements into some sectionals are not exactly gifts from Santa.

Area teams Reavis, Brother Rice, Hubbard, Marist, St. Rita, Oak Lawn, Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg are all in a Class 4A sectional that features Kenwood, which is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A by the Associated Press in its latest rankings. Bloom and Homewood-Flossmoor are other top programs in the sectional, for which a host school has not been named.

Brother Rice is ranked fifth in the state and St. Rita seventh in the poll that was conducted before the Mustangs’ recent win over the Crusaders.

That’s three of the state’s top-ranked teams that will be fighting for the title in February and March.

Also in Class 4A, Morton, Curie, Kelly, Lyons, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo are at the Hinisdale Central Sectional.

In Class 3A at the Glenbard South Sectional, St. Laurence, Back of the Yards, Bogan, Goode, Kennedy, Mount Carmel, Solorio and Nazareth are in the 18-team tournament. As is Simeon, the No. 1-ranked Class 3A team in the state.

JIM SEXTON VS IKE scaled

Another sectional that does not yet have a host will feature area schools Evergreen Park and Richards. Hillcrest, the third-ranked team in the state, Lemont, which is eighth, and Marian Catholic, which is 10 th , are also in the mix.

The De La Salle Sectional features the host as the only area team among its 20 schools.

In Class 2A, Catalyst-Maria and Chicago Christian are in the 25-team Julian Sectional.

Girls Basketball Postseason In Class 4A, the Proviso East Sectional features Morton, Reavis, Curie, Kelly, Mother McAuley, Lyons, Oak Lawn, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo.

The Romeoville Sectional features Marist, Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg.

In Class 3A, Nazareth, which finished second in the state last season, is at the Goode Sectional along with the hosts, St. Laurence, Back of the Yards, Bogan, De La Salle, Kennedy and Solorio.

Evergreen Park and Richards will participate in the Hillcrest Sectional.

In Class 2A, Chicago Christian and Catalyst/Maria are in a sectional that is still seeking a host.

EP takes three of four The Evergreen Park boys basketball team had a four-game-in-five-day stretch of basketball action, and went 3-1.

The Mustangs opened the busy stretch Dec. 13 in Blue Island and survived a 76-74 victory over Eisenhower in the South Suburban Red. Junior Nolan Sexton had 23 points and freshman Lonnie Mosley had 21, including five free throws in the final 22 seconds.

The next night they beat Addison Trail, 73-56, in a non-conference game. Sexton had 22 points, Ulises Cardinas had 17 and Isaiah Mosley had 16. Nathan Haugabook brought down 12 rebounds.

The Mustangs beat Andrew, 67-54, on Dec. 16. Sexton and Lonnie Mosley each had 18 points.

On Dec. 17, they had a noon home game and dropped a 50-45 non-conference battle with DePaul. Sexton led the way with 12 points.

The Mustangs entered this week 8-4.

Big win for SXU The Saint Xavier men’s basketball team racked up its biggest win of the year with a 97-82 non-conference home victory over Huntington (Indiana) on Saturday.

Huntington was ranked 25 th in NAIA by the coaches.

Jaeden King led the Cougars (11-3) with 33 points, while Cedric Johnson had 20 points and 15 rebounds.

The Cougars entered this week with six straight wins and have scored 93 or more points in three of those games.

Heading to Dartmouth Niko Abusara may not be a household name in south suburban basketball circles because he is playing for Benet, but he is making some noise.

Abusara, of Orland Park, has verbally committed to Dartmouth.

Through the Redwings’ first nine games, the 6-foot-5 senior is averaging 11.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

According to the Naperville Sun, he has been mentored by former Sandburg player Tommy Demogerontas, who is now playing in Argentina.
