When Gym Met Dewey: The Unexpected Collaboration of the Library and Physical Education

Breon Derby and Emily Benvenga

Author photo: Dr. Breon Derby

To celebrate National School Library Month and promote physical activity, Black Hills State University physical education students set up a mini golf course in the Spearfish High School Library.

A whole-school approach to education integrates multiple components of the school system to create balanced, well-rounded students who can transfer and apply knowledge and skills into their current, and future, lives.

Supporting and incorporating cross-disciplinary units, lessons, and ideas fosters student engagement, helps students build connections and form relationships between topics and disciplines, provides students a chance to explore and discover a deeper meaning and understanding of multiple concepts, and allows students to apply their knowledge and skills. One cross-disciplinary connection not often considered—or seen—is how the library can support the physical education classroom.

Traditionally, physical education has been looked at as a “bat and ball” content area. However, the new era of physical education aims to create a well-rounded, physically literate individual by equipping students with the knowledge and skills to remain physically active throughout their lifetime. The book SHAPE America National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K–12 Physical Education outlines what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school. Physical literacy is attained through the use of the following five standards outlined in the framework. The physical literate individual

  • demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns;
  • applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance;
  • demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness;
  • exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others; and
  • recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. 1

Physical education not only builds a foundation for enjoyment of lifelong physical activity, but also emphasizes applying the knowledge and skills gained to make healthier choices throughout one’s life. Standard 4 reflects an additional emphasis on character building. The physical education curriculum promotes the development of responsibility, respect for self and others, self-management, problem solving, honesty, effective communication skills, and continuous reflection and goal setting for personal growth. Traditionally, libraries have been perceived as quiet environments. However, today’s libraries foster inquiry and creativity, requiring a flexible environment. Within the library, students are encouraged to pursue curiosities, develop character, and become conscientious users of information. As the learning world for students has changed and evolved, the standards for the school library have also changed and evolved, and a new picture of libraries has developed.

Three key standards in the new American Association of School Librarians (AASL, 2018) framework stand out as support components to the physical education classroom:

  • Inquire: Build new knowledge by inquiring, thinking critically, identifying problems, and developing strategies for solving problems.
  • Collaborate: Work effectively with others to broaden perspectives and work toward common goals.
  • Explore: Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection. 2

Based on the desired outcomes of the AASL and the SHAPE America frameworks, the librarian and the physical educator can collaborate to create experiences that transfer beyond the classroom. The librarian’s role emerges as one that supports collaboration in the physical education classroom. Both areas work together to achieve the common goal of immersing the learner in more than just knowledge and skills and providing experiences that carry over to the real world.

The standards lay the foundation for the following activities. Many of the concepts listed below meet multiple AASL and SHAPE America standards. The teacher or librarian can combine and interchange the standards based on the lesson focus. Consider the following scenarios:

  • Elementary (K–5): The librarian comes into the classroom or gymnasium as a guest. The alphabet, or a portion of the alphabet, is emphasized at stations where the letters are tied to actions introduced by the physical education teacher (i.e., J = jump). At each station there is also a book with a title that starts with the letter J. The same stations can be set up at the students’ next library visit.
  • Middle School (6–8): The librarian and physical education teacher work together to come up with fitness facts that are true and untrue. During the next physical education class, the class visits the library to play a trivia game where students view fitness facts from various sources and determine whether the fitness fact is credible or not. If the class gets the fact right, they perform a physical activity, and if the class is wrong, they perform a different physical activity.
  • High School (9–12): As an out-of-class assignment, students in the physical education classroom choose a relevant topic (i.e., wellness, sport specific, fitness, etc.) to research. Students work with the librarian to learn about the research process.

Additional Ideas

  • To celebrate School Library Month, the school library hosts an expert visit with upper level students or local university students who are working towards their degree in physical education. The expert students set up a mini-golf course or other activities in the library that students can complete as a team or individually during their free hour. Students view the library setting as a welcoming and actively changing place.
  • The physical education teacher sets up an obstacle course or activities to mimic a story/theme being presented in the library. Alternatively, the librarian finds a virtual reality experience in the library that mimics skills/activities being taught in the physical education classroom.

Collaboration within the school environment creates a holistic, standards-based curriculum that leads to rich, diverse, memorable experiences for students that will carry on to their future lives. The library and physical education classroom have always been familiar elements to a school system. Combining the two disciplines is unexpected, but can lead to positive outcomes that have a lasting impact on students. &

Sample Essay on Library

The library is an important place for the community. It includes books, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, DVDs, and more such informational sources. It plays a significant role in the kid’s learning phase. Despite the advancement in technology , the library still plays a critical role in everyone’s life. One can borrow books from the library. There are two types of libraries one is a private library that is controlled by the school and college authorities, whereas the other is a public library that is open to all.

100 Words Essay on Library

A library is a place where books belonging to different subjects and genres are stored. My school also has a very big library next to the computer lab. Our timetable is designed in such as format that we could visit the library twice a week and explore books apart from our syllabus. This practice of visiting and exploring books in the library induces a habit of reading in all the students.

My school library has autobiographies, picture books, comics, novels, fictional books, books on culture, art, and craft, and many other materials. Students can borrow the desirable book to read for one week and then, on a specific date we need to return that book to the school library.  Thus, the library teaches us the value and importance of books and inculcates the habit of reading and imparting knowledge.

200-250 Words Essay on Library

The library is the place where people come together to learn and gain knowledge. Books are arranged on large bookshelves. Books belonging to similar genres are arranged on the same shelf by the librarian. The librarian is in charge of the library.

Some libraries have digital software to keep track of books issued and received to and from the library. Owing to technological advances, books are nowadays available on online platforms. Readers can read the book on apps like Kindle. But still, the library has its role, it is easily accessible plus it will provide a trustworthy source of information.

Good raiders prefer books to read in their physical form as they cherish the quality of pages, type of writing , and the authenticity of book covers. Thus, the library plays an important role in the student’s as well as adults’ life.

Every school allots specific hours for students to visit and read books from the library so that they can induce reading habits from childhood itself. Students also refer to books from the library to complete their assignments or summer vacation homework.

There are set rules and regulations of the library. Generally, we are not allowed to talk so that readers won’t get distracted and lose their pace of reading. Besides that, if any book issued from the library gets misplaced, damaged, or lost from the borrower then, he/she has to pay a fine to the librarian.

Thus, the library is an excellent resource for books that spread knowledge and information along with entertainment .

Templates for structuring argumentative essays with practice exercises and solutions

On this page, thesis statement, referring to others’ work.

  • Using impersonal language

Agreeing with what you’ve reviewed in the “They say” section

Disagreeing with what you’ve reviewed in the “they say” section.

  • Agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously

My critics say

This page introduces a framework for writing argumentative/analytical essays, following a structure dubbed “They Say, I Say, My Critics Say, I Respond.” [1]

This page also includes a number of templates [2]   or examples that you may find helpful for writing argumentative/analytical essays. Keep in mind that it is possible to change the sequence of the framework sections. Also, the templates can be used interchangeably.

A principal element of an argumentative/analytical essay is the thesis statement.

A thesis statement is one or two sentences (maybe more in longer essays) typically occurring near the end of an essay introduction; it shows your position regarding the topic you are investigating or your answer(s) to the question(s) that you are responding to.

Here are some templates that may help you write an effective thesis statement:

  • In this paper, I argue that .......... because ..........
  • In the pages that follow, I will argue that .......... because ..........
  • Although/Even though .......... this essay argues that/I will argue that .......... because ..........
  • This paper attempts to show that ..........
  • This paper contests the claim that ..........
  • This paper argues that ..........
  • The central thesis of this paper is ..........
  • In this essay, I attempt to defend the view that ..........

Thesis statement exercise and solutions

Imagine that you have been asked to write an argumentative essay about physical education in the Canadian high school system. Use one of the templates suggested to write a thesis statement about this topic.

  • In the pages that follow, I will argue that physical education in the Canadian high school system has been largely ineffective because it has remained limited in its range of exercises and has failed to connect with students’ actual interests, such a dance and martial arts.
  • This paper attempts to show that physical education is a crucial aspect of the Canadian high school system because many teenagers do not experience encouragement to do physical activity outside of school and contemporary life is increasingly sedentary for people of all ages.

The body of an essay usually begins by providing a background of the topic or a summary of the resources that you have reviewed (this is sometimes called a literature review). Here, you bring other people’s views into the paper. You want to show your readers what other scholars say (“they say”) about the topic, using techniques like paraphrasing, summarizing, and direct quotation.

You can start this section using one the following templates or examples to delve into the topic.

They say exercise and solutions

Imagine that you are now trying to incorporate some sources into your academic paper about physical education in the Canadian high school system. Try using a couple of templates from the “They Say” section of the handout.

Bonus exercise: See if you can identify the “template” structure that each of the sentences below is using (hint, they are different from the templates provided above).

  • Brown (2018) rejects the idea that the levels of climate change we are currently seeing can be considered “natural” or “cyclical” (p. 108).
  • According to Marshall (2017), we can see evidence of both code-switching and code-meshing in students’ reflective essay writing (p. 88).
  • Previous studies of physical education have revealed that teenagers experience a significant degree of dissatisfaction with their gym classes (Wilson, 2010; Vowel et al, 1999; Mossman, 1986).
  • A number of studies conducted prior to the 1990s have demonstrated that teenagers used to experience more encouragement to engage in physical activities outside of school hours (Sohal, 1954; Silverman, 1965; Lu, 1970; Mossman, 1986).
  • Jones’ (2017) investigations of sedentariness among young people have shown significant increases in illness among teenagers who do not engage in regular physical activity.

After the background section (e.g., summary or literature review), you need to include your own position on the topic (“I say”). Tell your reader if, for instance, you agree, disagree, or even both agree and disagree with the work you have reviewed.

You can use one of the following templates or samples to bring your voice in:

  • It could be argued that ..........
  • It is evident/clear/obvious that the role of modern arts is ..........
  • Clearly/Evidently, the role of education is ..........
  • There is no little doubt that ..........
  • I agree (that) ..........
  • I support the view that ...........
  • I concur with the view that ..........
  • I disagree (that) ..........
  • I disagree with the view that ..........
  • I challenge/contest the view that ..........
  • I oppose/am opposed to ..........
  • I disagree with X’s view that .......... because, as recent research has shown, ..........
  • X contradicts herself/can’t have it both ways. On the one hand, she argues ........... On the other hand, she also says ..........
  • By focusing on .........., X overlooks the deeper problem of ..........
  • Although I agree with X up to a point, I cannot accept his overriding assumption that ..........
  • Although I disagree with much that X says, I fully endorse his final conclusion that ..........
  • Though I concede that .........., I still insist that ..........
  • X is right that .........., but she seems on more dubious ground that when she claims that ..........
  • While X is probably wrong when she claims tha ..........., she is right that ..........
  • Whereas X provides ample evidence that .........., Y and Z’s research on .......... and .......... convinces me that .......... instead.
  • I’m of two minds about X’s claim that ........... On the one hand, I agree that .......... On the other hand, I’m not sure if ..........
  • My feelings on the issue are mixed. I do support X’s position that .........., but I find Y’s argument about .......... and Z’s research on .......... to be equally persuasive.

I say exercises and solutions

Try using a template from each of the sections below to bring your own position into your writing:

  • Agreeing with what you’ve reviewed
  • Disagreeing with that you’ve reviewed

Using impersonal language There is little doubt that the teenage years are important for establishing life-long habits.

Agreeing with what you’ve reviewed in the “They say” section I support the view, presented by Vowel et al (1999) that effective physical education needs to consider the heightened self-consciousness that many teenagers experience and, in particular, needs to be sensitive to the body image issues that can be pervasive among young people.

Disagreeing with what you’ve reviewed in the “They say” section By focusing on school physical education programs and their shortcomings, Wilson (2010) overlooks the deeper problem that young people are experiencing a lack of motivation to incorporate healthy exercise into their daily lives.

Agreeing and Disagreeing simultaneously Though I concede that school physical education programs are valuable, I still insist that they cannot be the sole or even the primary way that we promote an active lifestyle among young people.

In a good argumentative essay, in addition to expressing your position and argument, you should consider possible opposing views to your argument: refer to what your opponents say (“my critics say”) and why they may disagree with your argument.

Including the ideas of those who may disagree with you makes up the counterargument section of your paper. You can refer to actual people, including other research scholars who may disagree with you, or try and imagine what those who disagree with you might say.

Remember, a thesis should be debatable, so you should be able to imagine someone disagreeing you’re your position. Here are some templates that may help you in writing counterargument:

My critics say exercise and solutions

Using one of the templates, try imagining a counterargument for the thesis you drafted earlier.

Sociocultural theorists used to believe that adolescence was a time of “natural defiance” (Fung, 1995) and therefore discounted the role of educational programs aimed at supporting teenagers to form healthy habits. Much of the focus of schooling therefore became about teaching specific content and skills.

Critics may call into question my assumption that effective physical education can help establish life-long healthy living habits.

After explaining what your opponents say, you have to refute them. This is sometimes called the rebuttal. Here, you can show your readers that your opponents either fail to provide enough evidence to support their argument or their evidence lacks credibility and/or is flawed.

Alternatively, you may argue that your opponents’ argument is valid, but not persuasive enough to be used in your study, or that their argument could be valid in a different context.

Don’t forget that for each part of your argument, you must provide enough evidence for the claims that you make. This means that if you include one of these templates in your essays, you have to explain the evidence it presents in a way that is clear and convincing for your reader.

I respond exercise and solutions

Using one of the templates, craft a rebuttal to the counterargument you just created.

Sociocultural theorists used to believe that adolescence was a time of “natural defiance” (Fung, 1995) and therefore discounted the role of educational programs aimed at supporting teenagers to form healthy habits. Much of the focus of schooling therefore became about teaching specific content and skills. However, this argument fails to demonstrate that the defiance observed during adolescence was “natural” or inherent and not a product of a specific cultural environment. It therefore does not convince me that education during the adolescent years needs to remain rigidly focused on content and skills.

According to Christine L. Borgman of the Department of Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, the best scholarly definition of a digital library is an electronic or computer-based collection that contains “richer content and fuller capabilities” than a traditional database or “information retrieval system” (1999, p. 231). However, a more broad and comprehensive definition proposed by Borgman in 1992 when Internet access and computer use in public and academic libraries was relatively limited runs as thus–“a set of information resources, databases of text, numbers, graphics, sound, video, and a set of tools and capabilities to locate, retrieve and utilize the information resources available” (1999, p. 233).

In simplest terms, a digital library, sometimes housed in a traditional brick and mortar library, contains materials that have been digitally transferred from conventional “hard copies” like books, magazines, academic journals, newspapers, and other print sources; this may also include artwork, graphics, and audio/visual material. In some instances, materials have been transferred to what is known as microfiche which can be viewed with special devices similar in nature to the now outdated microfilm storage system. A prime example is the Internet Archive or Internet Library which contains mostly “historical collections that exist in digital format,” along with audio, moving images, software, and archived web pages that can be accessed free of charge by students, researchers, historians, and academic scholars (Internet Archive, 2013).

In addition, a digital library can be a specialized collection of information and data designed for a specific group of users or a community. As Borgman explains it, this type of digital library provides “functional capabilities (that) support the information needs and uses of that community.” In many instances, this specialized digital library allows “individuals and groups (to) interact with each other” via the use of data, information, and knowledge resources and systems” (1999, p. 234).

For example, museum curators and archivists can access information and data on historical objects, artwork, and their provenance or history of ownership; also, police organizations can access special collections that contain criminal records held by state-based law enforcement organizations and of course the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice.

In contrast to a digital library, the traditional physical library or brick and mortar institution holds collections made up of “hard copies” like books, magazines, academic journals, newspapers, and audio/visual materials stored on magnetic tape, microfilm, and microfiche. A good example is the traditional university library which provides access to materials for students and instructors. However, as pointed out by J. Pomerantz, the services provided by a traditional physical library are somewhat limited when compared to a true digital library. Although both of these entities or environments provide needed services to users, the recent “development of DLs has enabled the realization of services both like and unlike those traditionally provided” by a library that occupies a physical space (2008, p. 2). Perhaps the most important difference between a physical library and a digital library is that the first, in relation to service, is provided by a human being (a librarian), while a digital library is served by a search engine or electronic database which when compared to a person allows rapid access. Thus, as time and technology progresses, the day may arrive when physical libraries become non-existent and redundant.

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 100 Words

A collection of books is called a library. It is a place that plays many primary and functional roles in the lives of both readers and learners. Many people like to visit libraries weekly, and book aficionados pay their visit religiously every day. A bookworm’s favourite location is the library.

Extroverts explore the unexplored territory in the numerous novels the library offers, while introverts take sanctuary in its quiet nooks. A person with resources goes to the library to improve their talents, while a person with limited resources goes to the library because books are the most cost-effective way to learn new skills. It is the only place that provides something to all who seek comfort under its roof.

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 200 Words

A library is a place that maintains a collection of all forms of literature and important journals. The importance of a library in the lives of both readers and learners cannot be overstated. Many people go there once a week, while book enthusiasts go there every day. For a bookworm, the library is the best place to be.

Extroverts explore the unexplored territory in the numerous novels it has to offer, while introverts take solace in its snug corners. A person of means goes to the library to improve their talents, but a person of limited means goes to the library because books are the most cost-effective way to learn new skills. A student visits the library searching for reference books to boost his confidence for impending tests. A teacher, on the other hand, goes to the library to find latent information that isn’t readily apparent in the set curriculum.

Libraries are gaining more importance in the lives of one and all with digitalisation. As more and more things become digitised, several libraries have created their digital versions. It is user-friendly and simply accessible. It is even less expensive than a traditional library’s annual subscription. The value of libraries cannot be adequately expressed in words. It also has something to do with aesthetic enjoyment. Readers enjoy reading, learners enjoy learning, and educators enjoy exploring, yet neither can get enough of the library as a whole.

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 400 Words

A library is a place that maintains a collection of all forms of literature, reference books, periodicals and important journals. It plays a vital role in the lives of readers and learners alike. It is the most favourite place for a bookworm. While introverts seek refuge in its cosy corners, extroverts explore the uncharted territories in the many books it has to offer.

A student looks for reference books in the library to earn more confidence for the upcoming exams. In contrast, a teacher picks up reference books from the library to discover the latent knowledge that is not easily found in the prescribed curriculum. A keen learner wants to leave no book untouched, whereas a writer wants to read and write all the books at once. A person with obsessive-compulsive disorder visits the library to adore its different sections and, in the process, picks up new ways to or organised reorganise their bookshelves

Library memberships make reading economical and help one in taking up reading as a hobby. It makes one more informative, wise and knowledgeable. It also makes us more disciplined and gives our minds a place to think. The silence maintained in the library helps one focus and concentrate on the right things.

It channelises and re-channelises our thoughts by bringing us new ideas. It is an escape from reality. Under its roof, the old and the young come together to read the celebrated classics. It maintains a record and helps us understand the importance of keeping a journal. A library, most importantly, makes one fall in love with the pages of books time and again.

Libraries charge membership fees and take late charges if the book is not returned on time. This makes the borrower time-bound, and they try to complete the entire book within the given time interval. It makes one time-efficient and improves time management skills. It also nurtures self-discipline and teaches us to value all the resources such as time, money and knowledge alike.

Many libraries, such as the British Council, conduct important seminars and sessions that expose keen academicians. It acts as a venue for exchanging creative ideas and helps one with their respective career goals. Some libraries also conduct English speaking sessions to improve speaking skills and vocabulary. These days, as everything is getting digital, many libraries have come up with their digital version too.

It is user friendly and accessible easily. It is even cheaper than the annual membership of the physical library. One cannot estimate all the importance of libraries in words. It has got to do with aesthetic pleasure as well. Readers like to read, learners like to learn, educationists like to explore, and neither can have enough of the library as a whole.

Hopefully, after going through this lesson, you have a holistic idea about the importance of libraries in our lives. I have tried to cover every aspect of a library’s need and significance within and outside the lives of learners within limited words. Physical Education Dissertation Topics

Physical Education (PE) can provide many areas to investigate whether this is related to teaching styles, communication methods, the application of theory or how to encourage students to remain physically active. This guide will provide you with some of the latest trends that are occurring in PE literature as well as noting some key practice related focuses. Whether you are studying as an undergraduate, PGCE or postgraduate student, here are some key research topics for you to consider:

Teaching Practice

Lesson planning.

  • Do male PE staff focus more on skill development to support student physical development?
  • How does teaching style influence engagement and achievement in students?
  • What challenges arise in low-level PE lessons?
  • How can PE teachers help to reduce obesity in teenage students?
  • How can PE teachers increase knowledge and understanding of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle?
  • How do cultural differences impact active participation in PE lessons?
  • Is there a place for exer-gaming in the UK PE curriculum?
  • The impact of visual aids in communicating in PE teaching practice.
  • What is the role of student voice in the PE classroom?

Lesson planning is a key element of all teaching; however, PE teachers need to consider additional factors such as risk assessments, weather conditions or injuries which can influence students’ participation in their lessons. Therefore, ensuring additional elements are in lesson planning – such as the role of non-doers as officials or coaches – and ensuring to have a plan B should lesson plans not be able to be implanted. Here are some potential topics you might like to consider:

  • How do online resources support improvements in creative lesson planning in secondary PE lessons?
  • How does the use of ‘Joe Wicks’ style lessons support improvements in primary school students engagement in PE lessons?
  • How do trainee teachers in England use and evaluate lesson plans?
  • Do PE teachers see the value in reflective practice to improve future lesson planning?
  • How do PE teachers enhance motivations in lessons?
  • Do game-based activities increase engagement and enjoyment in secondary school students?
  • Is there still a place in the UK PE curriculum for traditional teaching methods?

Motivation is one of the most hotly debated and investigated areas in teaching, especially in PE where students engagement can differ greatly. While many studies have focused on girls’ motivation and engagement factors, there remains further motivations and the role of school provisions such as after school clubs and providing additional sources of motivation. Here are some potential topics for you to consider:

  • The impact of competitiveness in PE lessons on student’s motivation.
  • Factors influencing male KS4 motivation in core PE lessons.
  • Understanding the association between engagement, motivation and achievement in PE lessons.
  • Understanding the association between theoretical and practical engagement in PE lessons.
  • Key differences in male and female PE lesson motivation.
  • Are student motivation levels impacted by teaching style?
  • How does student choice impact motivation?
  • Does the inclusion of external teachers (local sport club coaches) support improvements to in and out-of-school sports participation?
  • How can PE teachers enhance students engagement in sport and exercise?

Similar to motivation, engagement is a key focus for PE teachers as without engagement, we are unable to meet the goals of the PE curriculum. By focusing on engagement, it is possible to understand how we can communicate with students and ensure that they are fully participating in lessons. Additionally, engagement can relate to the teachers’ engagement in practice and other areas. Below are some considerations for research regarding student engagement in PE lessons:

  • Effective differentiation in supporting student engagement in PE lessons.
  • The role of assessment for learning in supporting PE teachers’ engagement practice.
  • How can teachers adapt their practice to deliver fully inclusive lessons to enhance engagement?
  • Teacher and student perceptions of engagement in PE lessons.
  • How teacher personality and approach influence engagement in PE lessons.
  • PE Teachers’ engagement in theoretical-based practices to develop and deliver PE lessons.
  • How do PE teachers prepare for theoretical vs. practical lessons: Engagement with resources, planning time and additional factors.
  • How do creative lessons influence engagement in PE lessons?
  • Individual, Instructional and Department determinants of student engagement in PE lessons.
  • Students behaviours and engagement in PE lessons.
  • How to engage the unengaged in PE lessons?
