Love Mocktail 2 review: Darling Krishna’s Adi is on a quest to find Nidhi

  • Prathibha Joy

Last Updated: 10.27 PM, Feb 16, 2022

Story: Two years since he lost his wife Nidhima (Milana Nagaraj) to cancer, Aditya/Adi (Darling Krishna) is yet to come to terms with it. His friends Vijay (Abhilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) remain his pillars of strength during these tough times. Determined to get Aadi to move on in life, Vijay gets match-maker Jankana (Sushmitha Gowda) to set him up. But when he finally agrees to get married again, there’s an obstacle. Will Adi find his happily-ever-after?

Review: When I spoke to actor-director-producer Darling Krishna a couple of days ago, he reiterated multiple times that Love Mocktail 2 was as simple tale that could be split in two halves – the first he said was for die-hard fans of the original Love Mocktail , and the second for more discerning viewers to see how the story progresses. And let me tell you, he wasn’t kidding.

Personally, I thought the first half was quite pointless – a supposedly fun flashback of sorts of the events of Love Mocktail. In fact, I walked out of the theatre last night thinking that if I had caught it from the interval onward that would have sufficed. The thing about both Love Mocktail and Love Mocktail 2 is that these are films based on wafer-thin plots. It’s the presentation that clicked with audiences the first time around and Krishna, it seems, is counting on that again.

While the first film was a mostly fun film about his character Aditya/Adi’s quest to find love, in school, college and as a working professional, with a tragic ending, Love Mocktail 2 explores if time can heal the wounds caused by the loss of a loved one and if a new beginning is on the horizon for Adi. Yes, he does get a new beginning, but it’s not what many of you would expect and you will have to watch the film in theatres to find out what and how.

Since there’s not much by way of a story, it makes no sense delving into that and giving away spoilers. So, let’s look at whether the presentation and the characters click this time around. Last night, the movie hall was almost packed and it seemed that a majority of the audience (mind you, this was a paid premiere) enjoyed the film, especially the first half. I thought that the forced humour in a police station with a female constable who sticks out her tongue and winks at her superior officer after everything she says was in bad taste, but hey, everyone around me was rolling around in peels of laughter.

Love Mocktail 2 brings back most of the principal cast from the original film. Vijay, Sushma, Nidhi, Aditi, and Jo are all there, and the film actually doesn’t benefit much from the inclusion of the last two. Aditi (Rachana Inder) gets one terrible scene and Jo’s (Amrutha Iyengar) arc feels forced in the narrative, only to cater to Love Mocktail fans. The stand-out performers are Rachel David as Sihi, who makes her Kannada film debut with Love Mocktail 2 and Shwetha as Renu. Rachel brings the right amount of cute to her character and is the best thing about Love Mocktail 2. But despite all these cast members and a comedy track with Giri Shivanna, this film is from start to finish about Nidhi (Milana). There’s just a wee bit too much of her in Love Mocktail 2. In fact, Krishna had told me that as a next directorial he’d like to make an intense love story starring him and Milana, considering that she got only one half of the movie in Love Mocktail. But haven’t you already done that with Love Mocktail 2, Krishna?

The actor-filmmaker even manages to throw in a few subtle messages about not taking loved ones for granted, realizing the value of someone only after you’ve lost them, the importance of the tireless work put into running a household by a homemaker, etc. There’s a nod to mental health and the need to seek help too, but that isn’t explored well enough.

Verdict: Truth be told, I have mixed feelings about Love Mocktail 2. But in the larger scheme of things it feels that Krishna played safe by incorporating elements that will appeal to various segments of audiences. What worked for me, may not for another and vice versa. And even though I thought that it was only the last 30-odd minutes that pulled the film together, audiences may find elements that appeal to them at various points of the narrative. That’s why, Love Mocktail 2 may just find takers.

Love Mocktail Movie Review: A cocktail of emotions that leaves you with a musical hangover

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

True love they say, happens only once in a lifetime. But for our protagonist, Adi (Krishna), love happens at different stages of his life – this was the first detail we were told in the trailer of  Love Mocktail by Sudeep. This is just an extract that is brought to life in Krishna’s debut directorial, which also sees the actor playing the lead.

Staying true to the title, the first-time director has brought together the bittersweet ingredients of life in a film that represents the new urban trend. Love Mocktail  is a conversation-based journey as told by Adi to Rachna (Aditi). In a series of flashback episodes, Adi narrates the different stages of his life. The first half is more or less the experience of many among us.

Adi’s younger version, as a schoolboy, is played by Dhanush. He falls in love with Reema (Vibha), and his excitement leads him to compare her to Rose, the heroine of  Titanic . His weakness, that of not being able to communicate in English, results in him having to let her go.

His second love happens with Jo (Amrutha Iyengar), a girl from a well-to-do family, when he is at an engineering college. However, the happiness is short-lived, and differences develop between the two. Jo is apprehensive about whether Adi can provide the lifestyle she wants. Adi’s school friend (Vijay) goes all out to settle his life, and he is introduced to Nidhi, a strong independent woman and an IT employee.

Adi marries Nidhi, but it’s not a happy ending. There is more to this love story, which happens after marriage when Nidhi reveals that they are going to be parents. The happiness in the couple’s life comes to a standstill after she suffers a miscarriage. While Adi reassures Nidhi,  he himself goes through a difficult process. How he gradually copes with life is brought forth through a range of emotions that leaves you with a musical hangover.

Having taken on the responsibilities of direction, production, and acting, the multi-tasker Krishna has more or less enjoyed the process of the making and it is clearly visible. He takes us through different stages of life, which are as close to reality as possible, and at times takes us on a nostalgic journey. While the film’s takeaway will be those little elements in this romcom, there are moments where he puts the audience through an emotional ride.

Though the subject is familiar, the presentation is fresh. Krishna gets strong support from the film’s music director, Raghu Dixit. The beautiful picturisation by Sri Crazy Minds elevates the film.

This is Krishna’s first attempt at direction, and he has done well. There are some kinks to be ironed out, which is something that can be rectified in his future projects. His role as Adi, who comes in different shades, is done with perfection.

Love Mocktail , which features limited characters, thrives on the actors’ capabilities.  It is a unique role for Milana Nagaraj, and she shows maturity in her acting. Likewise, Armutha Iyengar’s character hints at a negative shade, which she pulls off with ease. A good show from the rest of the artistes too, including Rachna, Abhilash, and Kushi.

Summing up, Love Mocktail  makes for a delightful watch. It’s definitely a film for those who enjoy emotions.

Love Mocktail (Duology) ~ An Uncanny Tale of Romance

Love Mocktail 2 Review

Star Cast : Darling Krishna, Milana Nagaraj, Rachel David,  Amrutha Iyengar,  Sushmitha Gowda, and Ravi Seetharam Music Composed by Nakul Abhyankar Edited by Sri Crazy Mindz Directed by Darling Krishna

Watched it in PVR: Irrum Mazhil (Screen 3), Hyderabad.

Before you pass a judgment that I like films from other languages and not my mother-tongue Telugu, I like films from any language and would a Simple yet pungent dose of Romance love to promote films from other languages more than Telugu films as my friends, close-knit family members, people I mostly hang out with and my groups don’t get a chance to watch those other films as much as I do. Hence, an extra amount of promotions are done from my side to bring those films to their notice and also hopefully your notice. If a Telugu film inspires me to write about it like this, soon I will write about it too. Well, after giving you all this personal information that might be termed unnecessary by some, I just wanted to clear out a few things for regular readers.

What is this Love Mocktail ?

The movie is a Kannada Rom-Com that I have watched after some of my Kannada friends recommended it. And recently got a chance to catch Lock Mocktail 2 at the theatres. Wanted to write about what I liked and what worked in it for me.

Darling Krishnaa wrote, directed, and even produced this series. Milana Nagaraja , his wife in the film and real-life too, seemed perfect as Nidhi. She is the one, who made the film for me. Her performance and screen presence made the simple premise believable and enjoyable too. In a day and age, when over-the-top Television serials are exploring such themes, watching such dramas with romance don’t really bore well with a viewer, in a theatre. While romantic films are being made, everyone is trying to make them as spicy as they can and as lust fuelled as they can, to attract a more impressionable young audience member. This Love Mocktail doesn’t do that and present every problem in life with a spice of comedy .

Cocktails usually work as a mix of two or three drinks and they have to have the correct combination. When it comes to mocktails, they really are mocking us for not drinking alcohol. A correct mocktail though works as a supplement to alcoholic drinks. This Love Mocktail also feels the same. It is a supplement to over-the-top dramas with such romantic drama themes. You don’t feel the necessity to reach out for the tissues while watching it. It is not like the makers are pushing you to feel with them or laugh with them. They are not telling you to feel here, feel there. A background score keeps playing but it is used to add to the content that the scene is trying to tell not to force you to “feel” or “do” something.

Even Darling Krishnaa, the writer and director, doesn’t really go for over-the-top moments to deliver any wisdom or show how love works. He understands that romance lies in simple life moments . The moments that we tend to overlook and his style is simple too. He is not trying to go for symbolism or representation of some sort in his direction. He likes to keep it all simple and to a point, real. The difference between a film and a real-life incident can be noticed in his writing but he has that quality to not overwrite and hence, it is kept simple, mostly believable.

When you feel like his technique has nothing special to offer, his choice of actors surprises you. Everyone is chosen to give their lines an extra believability. It is not about how good are outside these characters but here in these characters, they look perfect. There is no problem of caricatur-ism coming into the writing or execution part as every situation is being played with an intention to make you laugh. Even in serious scenes, there is a constant joke going on. Unless the moment will be completely ruined by that joke, the writer wants to go there and deliver it. This shows how mature Darling Krishnaa is as a writer. How much he understands this romantic comedy writing and how much he is willing to take a risk as well.

To talk about the plot, this is your everyday daily serial. In fact, whatever you can notice happening in a daily serial happens here. But this is a mocktail of emotions while they are cocktails . They are aimed at audiences who believe over the top is life, here these moments are played in a fashion where youngsters can connect with. Hence, you get a mock every now and then, while a serious and sincere tale of romance is going on. For example, the wife of the lead actor, Nidhi , kicks him out of bed when he forgets her birthday. The same man doesn’t try to make it a “big scene” before deciding that he doesn’t need a high-paying promotion if his wife misses him. She complains to him very sweetly that she misses him and he thinks on his own about what is more important to him. She is adamant on many occasions but when he starts to not respond to her calls on the first ring or when he arrives home late regularly, she first scolds him, threatens him that she will kill him if he chooses another woman over her but then respects his decision to work longer for a better life. She keeps complaining at the same time tends to get used to it. These kinds of very day moments that this young generation is not thinking about or making them as big problems, issues in their marital life, are played very naturally.

Even other characters are also used to forward the story rather than using them just for the sake of it. If there is no obsessed lover , then we will not feel that the lead is stuck in his own web of emotions. If there is no widower then we won’t get the monologue that defines the journey of the lead. Even the friends of the lead keep pushing the story in the right direction while acting as comic relief. This kind of writing is something our own industry can learn from and seek. Comedians can be used as characters rather than just comedians for the sake of marketing the project .

The solutions are offered in a comic way. The hero doesn’t try to give a monologue after monologue or doesn’t threaten someone. Just pours his heart out to another widower . Even being haunted by memories is dealt in a comic way. The main character knows that he is hallucinating, but at the same time, he chooses to live with those hallucinations. This kind of writing is hard to find in today’s confusing times. Keeping your sensibilities intact and writing what works for you, is the first lesson every writer should learn . But somewhere, we miss all that in emulating romantic comedies from other languages. While you may take inspiration from them, it is important to keep them as real as fresh as original as you can. Darling Krishnaa without resorting to preaching does the same with the Love Mocktail series of films. His production values do give you an example on how to make a decent film during such an overbearing pandemic.

Music by Nakul Abhyankar should be appreciated for the kind of background score and songs, he gave to the film. He added another layer to the proceedings with his soothing score. It is the score that inspired me to watch the first film, actually.

One of my friends, complained that the execution makes it all look like a web series . Yes, the budgets are tight and one can easily see that the director and producer have kept a leash on the costs. Still, the premise, the writing, and the performances work for the viewers. All in all, I can say that this mocktail of romance and comedy works as a fresh Breeze of air when we visit mountains. You don’t necessarily be craving for something like that but when those valley breezes or winds hit you, you feel relaxed and amazed by the experience . Love Mocktail one and two belong to that category of films. Keep your expectations in check and let the actors familiarise themselves with you for the starting ten to fifteen minutes . This Uncanny mix of romance and comedy with an everyday appeal makes Love Mocktail a fun drink to gulp while you need to bare some pulp.

'Love Mocktail' review: Mocktail of emotions with a musical hangover

A still from Love Mocktail.

True love they say, happens only once in a lifetime. But for our Adi (Krishna), love happens at different stages – the first detail we are told in the trailer by Sudeep. This is just an extract, which is brought to life in Krishna’s debut directorial, Love Mocktail, which also sees the actor playing the lead. Staying true to the title, the first-time director has brought in the bittersweet ingredients of life, which emote mixed feelings. A film, which represents the new urban trend, Love Mocktail, is a conversation-based journey as told by Adi to Rachna (Aditi). In a series of flashback episodes, Adi narrates the different stages of life. The first half is more or less experiences by many individuals.

The happiness in the couple’s life comes to a standstill after she miscarries. While Adi reassures Nidhi,  he himself goes through a difficult process. He takes us through different stages of life, which are as close to reality as possible, and at times takes us on a nostalgic journey. While the film’s take away will be those little elements in this rom-com,  there are moments where he puts the audience through an emotional drain.

Though the subject is familiar, its presentation is what brings out the freshness. He gets strong support from the film’s music director, Raghu Dixit, who has brought a perfect mix of medleys and gets the right placement in the film. The background score and beautiful picturisation by Sri Crazy Minds elevates the film’s emotions.

The film, which comes with limited characters, thrives on the actors’ capabilities. This is Krishna’s first attempt at direction, which of course, has its own loopholes, and is something that can be rectified in his future projects. His role as Adi, who comes in different shades, is done with perfection.

A unique role for Milana Nagaraj, she shows maturity in her acting. Likewise, Armutha Iyengar’s character hints a negative shade, which she pulls off with ease. A good show from the rest of the artistes, including Rachna,Abhilash and Kushi. Summing up, Love Mocktail, which comes with mixed feelings, makes for a delightful watch. One can indulge in the fun and fizzy moments. It’s definitely a film for those who enjoy emotions.

A romantic comedy that takes you on a journey of life and love with familiar beats. It’s a mixed bag with some really refreshing enjoyable moments and cliched underwhelming ones. Despite being inconsistent and predictable, the well executed situational comedies keep you hooked, with an effective and emotional final 30 minutes. The cinematography and music are pleasant. A passable watch.

One of the bleakest films I have ever seen because of its inability to decide on it's tone. Story critique: (skip for mild spoilers, really mild though) Pretty much everyone who recommended this movie kept telling me that it's innovative and fresh. But the movie starts off with a clichéd guy saves girl from some pervs which crumbled all my hopes. Then, the movie jumps back to the 90s. I have never seen so much carelessness and lack of effort in filming something from the 90s. NOBODY dressed like that in the 90s. NOBODY talked like that in the 90s. NOBODY did whatever the fuck happened in that sequence in the 90s. I ended up being really mad during the whole…

After saving a woman, Adi recollects about his love life and informs her about all the despairs he tolerated in his expedition to locate his true love.

Darling Krishna gives a very good performance in his role as Adi, the man who acts like he is determined to find the woman of his dreams, while also painfully going through his past relationships.

Elsewhere, there are fine performances to be had from Amrutha Iyengar, Milana Nagaraj and Abhilaash in their respective parts as Jo, Nidhi and Vijay, with Jo…

Of all the pieces of crap I've seen in my life, this has to be among the most garbage tier of the lot, moreso because it was hailed as this new era defining love story, which it isn't, and I know for a fact that the hailing was a result of low self esteem of Kannada audience that even an inkling of preachy lines like "KannaDdhalli mathaDu" is enough to celebrate terrible movies.

The movie neither has any focus on what story it wants to tell nor does it have a consistent tone. It starts off as a typical Kannada movie with a fight sequence rescuing a manic pixie dream girl but apparently it needs to show off as it's…

Love Mocktail? More like Love Mixed Fruit juice.

Girish Kasaravalli said that a movie which sets out to manipulate the audience is the most dangerous film of them all. This movie does exactly that. It manipulates the audience's emotions to make itself look good, but deep down the movie is flawed, in almost all aspects.

There was a huge wave of support to this film when it released as it did not get a lot of showings (major problem for Kannada films in Karnataka) and it was hailed as a unique, refreshing film but all it did was tell the same old stories that mainstream Kannada language movies tell. A love story completely from a male's perspective, like we've not…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ EMOTIONAL...

Everything in the movie - the screenplay, story, direction, background score, and the acting just shouts wow. Each of the actors has performed very well, but Krishna and Milana Nagraj take it away with a combination of acting, screen presence, beautiful chemistry. Their dedication and effort to completely blend into their character is very very appreciable and they do that seamlessly and effortlessly. My first Kannada movie :)

Love Mocktail is a 2020 Indian Kannada-language romantic drama film directed and written by Krishna, and produced by himself and Milana Nagaraj. The film stars Darling Krishna and Milana Nagaraj in lead roles, while Amrutha Iyengar plays a supporting role. The movie was released on 31st January 2020 and received a lot of positive reviews from critics and audiences.

The story revolves around Adi (Darling Krishna), a young aspiring filmmaker who reminisces his past relationships and experiences with women before he finally settles down with the love of his life. The movie is set in a non-linear narrative, and it seamlessly transitions from the past to the present.

The movie begins with Adi, who has become a successful filmmaker, receiving a phone call from his ex-girlfriend, Seetha (Milana Nagaraj) after many years. The call reignites his memories of his past relationships, his first love, Rachana (Amrutha Iyengar), his fleeting romance with a girl named Simmy, and his relationship with the bold and beautiful Nidhi (Shraddha Srinath). As he flips through the pages of the book he has been writing, he takes us on a journey of his life, love, heartbreaks, friendships, and aspirations.

Through Adi's character, the movie shows the vulnerability and complexities of relationships. It questions societal norms around love and promises to break the shackles of conventional expectations from a relationship. The story also highlights the importance of communication and how it can make or break relationships.

The movie takes us through the picturesque locations of Karnataka, which serves as a perfect backdrop to the movie's emotions. The cinematography by Sri Crazymindz is spellbinding, and each frame in the movie is a visual treat. The songs in the movie are soulful and are composed by Raghu Dixit and music director Charan Raj.

The acting in Love Mocktail is top-notch, with all the actors delivering amazing performances. Darling Krishna is outstanding in his portrayal of Adi, and he brings to life his character's emotional journey. Milana Nagaraj plays her role with utmost grace and poise, and her chemistry with Krishna is electrifying. Shraddha Srinath and Amrutha Iyengar, who play Adi's love interests, bring a refreshing charm to their roles.

The movie stands out for its unique storytelling approach and the way it deals with the intricacies of relationships. It also challenges traditional gender roles and stereotypes and portrays women as confident and strong individuals who are in charge of their lives, just like Adi. Love Mocktail is a perfect blend of romance, drama, and emotions, and it will leave you with a smile on your face.

In conclusion, Love Mocktail is a must-watch movie for all the Kannada film lovers. It is a beautiful film that celebrates love, life, and relationships in its truest form. The movie will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, and you will come out of the theatre feeling uplifted and inspired.

Love Mocktail is a 2020 romance movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 33 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 8.2.

Gurthunda Seethakalam Movie review: ‘Love Mocktail’ remake remains tasteless

Gurthunda Seethakalam Movie review: ‘Love Mocktail’ remake remains tasteless

Happening actor Satya Dev comes with breezy entertainer “ Gurthunda Seethakalam ,” featuring Tamannaah , and Megha Akash. The film created huge buzz in film circles with their trailers and promotions. The other reason for this response is that this is the outcome of Satya Dev after a terrific performance in Chiranjeevi’s “godfather.” The fil got released in theatres and let’s see how the film fares at box-office.

Satya Dev meets Megha Akash at a hill station in Karnataka and these two, who are strangers to each other, then start the journey to Bengaluru. Satya starts narrating his story to Megha and opens up about his marital life with his wife, played by Tamannaah. What is the marital story? How do Satya and Megha end the journey is the remaining plot of the story.

This film is a remake of Kannada film “Love Mocktail” and the director Nagasekhar pretty much sticks to all the elements of the original. But he fails to get the same emotional connect as the original which is very crucial for such subjects. Towards the end, when the narrative gets sobbing, the desired emotional connect is inexistant.

The love track between Satya and Tamannaah is okayish at best. The film just appears to be an combination of one formulaic love scene after another. There are a few bright moments here and there. But as a whole, this film lacks the desired emotional connect that is needed for a film that essentially runs on heartfelt emotions.

On a whole, “Gurthunda Seethakalam” is a love drama but it struggles due to the lack of emotional drive. Better writing and narration could’ve helped the film. The all-important emotional climax ends underwhelmingly. This film ends up as a below-par love drama.

Performances

Satya is a proven performer and he is in his element as he plays a man with an emotionally stirring past. His portrayal is of top quality. He looks settled and emotes the key emotions very well. Megha Akash plays a brief role and she delivers what is expected from her. Tamannaah is alright in her role. She sports a de-glam look in the closing portion. The role is a challenging one and she has done a passable job at it. Remaining cast tried to show their presence and they are okayish in their given portions.

Technicalities

Writer and director Nagasekhar could have spent much more time in developing the script for a better result. He should recognise that breezy scenes and performances will not give a positive result to a film. The background score by Kaala Bhairava is adequate and his songs are alright. The cinematography by Satya Hegde is decent. Editing could have been much better as the film lags in some pieces. Production values are very good as the film looks fresh and colourful.

Satya Dev’s performance

A couple of breezy scenes

Lack of emotional drive

No freshness in the presentation

Underwhelming climax
