My Hero Academia: 10 Crazy Facts You Didn't Know About Present Mic

My Hero Academia's Present Mic might dress like a punk, but he has a heart of gold.

Many colorful and fun characters populate the cast of the hit Shonen anime series My Hero Academia , which (as of this writing) is about to wrap up its 4th season. Another season is on the way, and we can't wait to see more action scenes with some of our favorite heroes. One of them might even be Present Mic, a teacher at UA.

Most staff members at UA are pro heroes, from the homeroom teachers Eraser Head and Vlad King to the art teacher, Midnight , and the English teacher, Present Mic. In fact, Present Mic is one of the first teachers whom we see at UA, and he made quite an impression. But there may be more to him than meets the eye. Let's gt to know him a little better.

10 He's Young

In fact, the whole cast of My Hero Academia is on the youthful side; hardly anyone cracks 40 years old. True, All For One is quite old (possibly over a century), and Gran Torino is in his golden years. But most of the teachers at UA are all Millennial-aged.

This includes Present Mic, who is a sprightly 30 years old in the first few episodes of My Hero Academia . He's still got a long career ahead of him, and we're willing to bet that he's still training his quirk and combat skills in case trouble comes knocking. He's not yet ready to pass the baton to the next generation.

9 He's Impulsive

These are Present Mic and Eraser Head back in their student days, and they had different levels of enthusiasm for hero names and costumes. Aizawa just wants to get the job done, while Present Mic wants to make a show of things.

In fact, Present Mic came up with Aizawa's name "Eraser Head" all at once, prompted by Aizawa's lack of interest in making up a name. Present Mic wasted no time in creating the ridiculous but lovable name Eraser Head.

8 He Has Punk Style

Every hero costume needs to have its own distinct style and pattern, as opposed to UA's student uniforms, and many hero costumes are designed to enhance the user's quirk. The colors, materials, and accessories can vary widely.

RELATED: My Hero Academia: 10 Astonishing Eraser Head Fan Art Pictures You Need to See

Present Mic is fully decked out in the punk style of the 1970s UK and 1980s USA, with black leather, fingerless gloves, a studded belt, boots, and a tall variant of a mohawk. Fortunately, he only dresses like a punk; his heart is just as gold as his hair.

7 His Blood Type

In Japan, it is common to believe that your blood type determines your personality, not unlike astrology signs or Chinese zodiac birth years. Present Mic's blood type, according to official My Hero Academia sources, is B.

So, what are B-type people supposed to be like? They are free-spirited, creative, have short attention spans, curious, and adventurous. Overall, we have to say that yes, Present Mic has the right blood type for his personality!

What's in a name? Author Kohei Horikoshi took care to give all his characters meaningful names based on the kanji used to write them, and the meanings often tie into the owner's quirks. What about Present Mic?

RELATED: 10 Unused My Hero Academia Designs That Look Better Than You'd Expect

His name is Hizashi Yamada, and we should mention that there is a real-life Japanese radio host named Hisashi Yamada, who hosts "Hisashi Yamada's Radi-Unlimited" on TOKYO FM. Care to tune in?

5 He Loves To Explain Quirks

It is Present Mic who explains the quirks of everyone who appears on screen, and we get the impression that he really enjoys it. Not only did he volunteer for the job, as opposed to some generic narrator, but he's enthusiastic.

He helps make quirks more fun this way, and for his own quirk's outline, it was Aizawa who narrated the details. Based on the wording, Present Mic wrote the description for his quirk himself. He must have enjoyed that, too.

4 He Was Radically Redesigned

We all know and love Present Mic for his outgoing personality and colorful ways, but at first, a character like this wasn't even going to appear. At first, author Horikoshi was only going to have a fat, bald old man host the school orientation ceremony.

RELATED: My Hero Academia: 10 Outstanding Pro Hero Cosplay You Need to See

But the author soon decided that such a character would feel dull, so he invented Present Mic as we know him to keep the excitement up. And as a tribute to the original design, Present Mic has "baldness" written on his hero costume's speaker device.

3 He Gets Concerned About Students

While Present Mic is a goofy and reckless fellow, he is not irresponsible. In fact, he cares a great deal about the UA students, like a big brother, and he was disturbed when Ochaco and Bakugo 's duel in the sports festival heated up.

After seeing Bakugo's devastating power, Present Mic panicked and called for an early end to the match, so Ochaco wouldn't get badly hurt. But Aizawa talked him down, explaining that as a proper student, Ochaco deserved a fair chance to show off her abilities and try to win the match on her own terms. She didn't need other people sheltering her like that, though we appreciate that Present Mic cared that much.

2 He Lives A Radio Life

It's easy to see that Present Mic likes to act and look like a radio DJ, with his punk clothes and his headphones and outgoing personality. But it's not just a gimmick for his costume; he lives the life, too.

He likes to watch TV and listen to the radio, and better yet, he has his very own radio show, and named it "Put Your Hands Up Radio." He broadcasts music every Friday night, with no commercials included.

1 He's Modestly Popular

The students and staff at UA seem to have mixed feelings on Present Mic, since he certainly does his job, but he's loud and silly, and he doesn't captivate an audience as well as he'd like. But do the fans like him?

Somewhat, yes. In the first popularity poll for My Hero Academia , he ranked pretty low, at 36th place. He got a break in the second poll, climbing the charts to 17th place. That's not bad; we're guessing his cool personality and outfit made up for his lack of great action scenes.

Screen Rant

The office: 9 hilarious memes that sum up michael and jim's friendship.

Michael and Jim's bond on The Office continues to be the subject of several entertaining and accurate memes from the fandom.

LEGO 's 1164-piece The Office set ensures the classic workplace mockumentary remains in the spotlight. Included in this set are mini figurines of Dunder Mifflin staffers such as the bossman, Michael Scott, and the prankster, Jim Halpert. The said build is the perfect callback to some of the funniest fan-favorite characters, and locations from the acclaimed sitcom.

Out of the several interesting relationships on The Office , Michael and Jim's dynamic had an edge of quirkiness to it. The relationship continues to be honored through many memes on the internet, and out of those, these nine are the most entertaining and accurate.

Jim Was Michael's Favorite

Michael often snubbed Dwight and thought of him as an uncool eccentric guy. In "Sexual Harassment," he compared him to Seinfeld 's doofus, Cosmo Kramer.

RELATED: 10 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up The Office's Michael As A Character

The Dwight-Michael dynamic draws a sharp contrast with the Michael-Jim dynamic. Michael thought of Jim as a cool guy, and his love for him never faltered. This meme encapsulates the fact that the bossman acted favorably towards Jim more so than Dwight. It points to the fact that Michael played favorites and tried to be more in tune with Jim than Dwight.

Problematic Energy Vs. Calm Demeanor

Michael's problematic energy acted as a foil to Jim's calm demeanor, and it prompted the latter to break the fourth wall by giving a smug sideways glance at the camera.

In season 6's "The Promotion," Dunder Mifflin, Scranton staffers were still adjusting to having both Michael and Jim as their bosses. Jim ran interference just when Michael called his staff members for another pointless conference room meeting. He reminded Michael that the meetings were a bit disruptive and Michael in response called him "Jimothy." This meme simply points to Michael Scott's knack for bungling sayings on The Office . Though he'd butchered Jim's name this time around, the latter didn't mind at all because he meant business that particular day. Jim and Michael could easily talk out their differences without making too big a deal out of things.

The episode, "Goodbye, Michael" features one of Michael Scott's most wholesome moments on The Office . The plot, as the name suggests, revolves around Mr. Scott's exit from Scranton. He decides to leave a day early without telling anyone, and thus bids individual goodbyes to each employee. Jim meanwhile gets to the bottom of his plan and confronts him about it in his office.

This meme is an ode to the evolution of Michael and Jim's relationship. It's a testament to the fact that Jim and Michael had perfectly navigated their relationship in a professional setting, and in the process, become very close friends.

The Perfect Cross-Over

Michael also loved Jim and Pam as individuals and as a couple. Early on in season 2's "Booze Cruise," he demonstrated that he was a good friend to Jim by motivating him to not give up on Pam. He was over the moon when the pair's relationship was finally outed to the Dunder Mifflin staffers.

RELATED: 10 Memes That Sum Up The Office's Jim As A Character

Michael danced at Jim and Pam's wedding, and he was there was they had a baby. This cross-over meme blends meme text of Game of Thrones ' Cersei and Jamie Lannister and House of the Dragon ' s Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen to point out that in Michael, Jim and Pam found their cheerleader. He offered them support, and love, and most of all celebrated their wins.

The Office 's "Stress Relief" is home to one of the times when fans rooted for Michael Scott . The bossman forces his employees to take him down to relieve office stress, but roast leaves him distressed. He leaves the warehouse and doesn't show up to work the next morning.

Michael eventually does come back to take a jab at each of his employees. He starts off with his favorite, Jim, saying, "Jim, you're 6'11, and you weigh 90 pounds. Gumby has a better body than you. Boom! Roasted!" This meme celebrates the fact that John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert, has shone in intense physical roles such as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan . Jim and Michael's back-and-forth roast is proof that their relationship blossomed over time and that they could handle the playful exchange of teasing remarks with sensitivity.

From Boss-Employee To Partners In Crime

After learning Karen Filippelli was trying to poach Stanley Hudson, Michael and Dwight trick Jim into going down to Utica to steal their copier as revenge. They dress in warehouse uniforms and don fake mustaches and hope to go unnoticed. The trio's plan ultimately backfires, and Karen reprimands them for their unprofessional behavior. The said episode - "Branch Wars," marks one of the times in The Office when Jim and Dwight joined forces . The premise combines absurd with The Office 's branch of cringe-worthy comedy.

This meme points out the fact that Michael and Jim's relationship could easily switch from that of boss-employee to partners in crime. Though Jim was unwilling to join Michael in his sinister, unprofessional plan, he eventually gave in, and what's more, agreed to Michael's plan of disguising himself as a warehouse worker.

Michael's Ridiculous Behavior And The Jim Halpert Face

In the season 3 finale of The Office , Michael, Jim, and Karen interview for a job at corporate. Michael thinks of himself as the most qualified person and demonstrates idiosyncratic behavior as the three wait for their turn to be interviewed.

RELATED: One Meme That Perfectly Sums Up Each Supporting Character On The Office

This meme encapsulates the fact that Michael was an outlandish boss, who couldn't read the room, and his questionable behavior almost always led to Jim's camera stares. While Michael acted completely oblivious to the demands of a work environment, as pointed out in the meme above, Jim couldn't help but look into the camera to react to his inconceivable actions. The majority of Jim's on-camera looks were a reaction to Michael's ridiculous behavior, and while he couldn't point it to Michael outright, he expressed it to the camera.

Michael Let It Slide

It is pertinent to mention Michael almost always lets Jim's prank-playing on The Office slide. Accountability and responsibility weren't his strong points, and he clearly favored Jim over Dwight.

The Office began with Michael asking Dwight to eat out his office stapler from the gelatin instead of holding the culprit, Jim, who'd encased it in the first place, responsible. Jim always took advantage of Michael's lack of accountability, and the pilot is a great example of that direction.

Michael Vies For Jim's Attention

In season 3's "The Convention," Jim, recently transferred to the Stamford branch, and his boss, Josh Porter head to Philadelphia for the Office Supply Convention. Meanwhile, Michael and Dwight participate on behalf of the Scranton branch. Michael is rather sad about Jim leaving Scranton for Stamford, and thus tries to one-up Josh whenever he gets the chance.

This meme text artfully compares Michael and Dwight's reaction to the classic sitcom, Friends , to point out just how much Michael hated being left out of the loop, especially when the situation involved Jim. Jim was one of his favorite employees, and he'd missed their boss-employee friendship.

The Ultimate Ranking of the Best Memes of The Office That Will Have You Laughing Through the Daily Grind

T hese days, it’s hard to imagine a world in which The Office doesn’t exist. But NBC’s beloved mockumentary sitcom wasn’t always as popular as its present-day reputation — and ubiquitous meme presence — suggests. In fact, the show may have been cancelled after its second season if it hadn’t been for its soaring iTunes sales .

As we now know, The Office was destined to stay on the air for nine seasons. It even survived the departure of Steve Carell, who played Dunder Mifflin Scranton’s iconically cringey boss, Michael Scott, at the end of season 7.

But it perhaps has been the new life that The Office found on Netflix that has transformed the show into the meme-generating viral juggernaut it’s known as today. Although memes inspired by The Office were popular throughout the show’s run, as one of the most-watched shows on Netflix’s at the height of meme culture, it has become a true beacon of online humor.

Netflix has given younger viewers who never saw The Office on TV the opportunity to watch the series for the first time and fans who loved the series during its original run to revisit it time and again. In turn, like Spongebob Squarepants , the show has become one of the most memed shows in internet history. And from Michael screaming “No God, please no!” to Jim (John Krasinski) and Dwight’s (Rainn Wilson) infamous “It is your birthday” sign , it truly does seem like there’s an Office reaction GIF for pretty much every occasion.

Now, Netflix has announced that The Office will be leaving in January 2021 to move to NBCUniversal’s new streaming service. But before that happens, TIME is here to rank the best The Office memes ever that the show has inspired in the nearly 15 years since its March 2005 debut — and boy, are there a lot to choose from.

Because as long as the absurd workplace comedy of The Office remains relatable to the modern world, people will keep watching and the memes will keep flowing.

Why do moments from The Office so easily lend themselves to memes?

THE OFFICE -- 'A Benihana Christmas' Episode 9 -- Aired 12/14/06 -- Pictured: Back Row (l-r), Creed Bratton as Creed, Paul Liberstein as Toby, Brian Baumgartner as Kevin Malone, Kate Flannery as Meredith Palmer, Leslie David Baker as Stanley Hudson, Phyllis Smith as Phyllis Lapin, Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor, B.J. Novak as Ryan Howard, Front Row (l-r) Rainn WIlson as Dwight Schrute, Angela Kinsey as Angela Martin, Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly, Steve Carell as Michael Scott, John Krasinski as Jim Halpert

If you had never heard of The Office and someone told you that it was about the everyday lives of people working at a paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, you probably wouldn’t be too keen on watching it. But that description fails to account for the show’s incomparable slapstick comedy and sharp satirical take on contemporary work culture.

For those reasons and more, The Office continues to keep people coming back for more. Reddit user Mike Lazenby, a longtime moderator of /r/dundermifflin , tells TIME that, thanks to repeat viewings, the subreddit is more active than ever before.

“People finish the series and go straight back to the start. You simply can’t watch once and never go back to it,” he says. “It’s interesting to see the show still reaching new levels of popularity.”

And, according to Lazenby, it’s that undeniably addictive quality The Office possesses that makes it so memeable.

“Do you ever see a GIF of one of your favorite lines from a film or show and you can hear it being said in your head? There are a hundred lines from the show that will stick with you in that way, you simply never get tired of them,” he says. “I think it’s fair to say that there is a fitting Office GIF for every possible reaction.”

We couldn’t agree more. Here’s our ranking of the top 10 best memes of The Office .

10. The Office meme where Andy’s sorry he annoyed you

Season 3, episode 14: “the return”.

Ever get a snarky response from someone when you’re just trying to be nice? Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) knows what you’re going through. After trying and failing to win Michael over in the wake of the Stamford branch merging with Scranton, a hurt Andy segues away from the conversation with this passive aggressive apology. Of course, he follows it up by punching a hole in the wall, ruining any chance he had of remaining calm, cool and collected.

9. The Office meme where that’s what she said

Obviously, Michael Scott didn’t coin the phrase, “That’s what she said.” But he definitely contributed to a resurgence in its popularity among Office fans. Michael’s NSFW response to anything that could remotely be construed as sexual innuendo became his signature catchphrase over the course of the show and was often uttered at the slightest provocation. It has since been regularly employed by memers hoping to recreate the awkward magic of him uttering those words aloud.

“That’s what.” - She — Michael Gary Scott, Dunder Mifflin (Parody) (@Da_MichaelScott) December 19, 2019
someone else: *says literally anything* my brain: don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it me: “that’s what she said” pic.twitter.com/0AVg6nbcMi — Michael Gary Scott, Dunder Mifflin (Parody) (@Da_MichaelScott) November 26, 2018

8. The Office meme where Dwight lays down cold, hard facts

“False!”

If you’re a fan of The Office , you probably couldn’t help but read that in the voice of the one and only Dwight Schrute. As Assistant to the Regional Manager, one of Dwight’s favorite pastimes was correcting his coworkers in the least subtle way possible, loudly declaring that what they were saying was “false!”

When Jim pranked Dwight by imitating him , he even threw in his own declaration of “false!” to bring the impersonation home.

And thus, the Schrute Facts meme , a picture of Dwight overlaid with text imagining how he would refute various statements, was born. This one is mostly useful for getting on people’s nerves in classic Dwight style.

7. The Office meme where Michael is Beyoncé, always

Season 6, episode 25: “the chump”.

After Michael discovers that Donna (Amy Pietz) is cheating on her husband with him, Andy, who was cheated on by Angela (Angela Kinsey), tries to teach him a lesson about what it feels like to realize someone is being unfaithful to you. Referencing the 2009 thriller Obsessed , Andy insists that Michael is the villain, Ali Larter, in this scenario while he’s the hero, Beyoncé.

Michael’s response to this logic remains one of the most flawless comebacks of all time: “I am Beyoncé, always.”

This reply not only shuts down pretty much any further argument, it also establishes that no matter what others think, in your mind, you can always be the hero of your own story. Not to mention that this reaction GIF is essential for whenever Queen Bey demonstrates anew how perfect she is — which happens quite frequently.

6. The Office meme where Kelly has a question

Season 4, episode 15: “night out”.

After getting promoted to corporate, Ryan returns to Scranton to acquaint his old branch with the new Dunder Mifflin website, “Dunder Mifflin Infinity 2.0.” But Kelly (Mindy Kaling) has no intention of letting him get off easy for dumping her. So when Ryan asks if she has a question during his meeting, Kelly doesn’t waste the chance to make her feelings known. “Yeah, I have a lot of questions,” she retorts. “Number one, how dare you?”

It pretty much goes without saying, but this is the perfect meme to have in your back pocket when you need to capture the sheer indignity of an unfair situation — like, for instance, The Office leaving Netflix.

5. The Office meme where Michael is ready to get hurt again

Season 4, episode 14: “chair model”.

Who else was going to give us the ultimate relationship meme if not Michael Scott, the king of being unlucky in love?

After breaking up with Jan (Melora Hardin) and becoming enamored with a chair catalog model, as one does, Michael asks his employees to set him up with some of their female friends (using the model as a blueprint). Pam eventually agrees to give Michael the number of her landlady, who she describes as “really sweet.”

As per usual, Michael royally screws the situation up, but not before gifting fans with the one of the most relatable post-breakup lines in TV history: “No question about it, I am ready to get hurt again.”

Thanks to the constant flux in people’s relationship statuses, the memes for this one are always in demand.

4. The Office meme where Pam feels God in Chili’s

Season 2, episode 1: “the dundies”.

Who among us hasn’t had a few too many during a night out with coworkers? That’s where relatable queen Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) comes into play. After downing several drinks to calm her nerves over once again receiving the Dundie for “World’s Longest Engagement,” Pam is called on stage for the “Whitest Sneakers” award instead. Her tipsiness and surprise then combine to produce the greatest acceptance speech ending of all time: “I wanna thank God because God gave me this Dundie. And I feel God in this Chili’s tonight.”

Later in the episode, Pam is handed a lifetime ban from Chili’s for sneaking drinks. But that didn’t stop Fischer from trying to revisit the scene of her character’s crime. In 2017, she tweeted a photo of herself standing outside the restaurant with a guilty look on her face. “Should I try to go in?,” she captioned the picture, prompting the official Chili’s account to deliver the only appropriate response, “we hope you felt God tonight,” before lifting her ban.

BREAKING: Chili’s lifts permanent ban on Pam ( @JennaFischer ), welcomes her back to any #Chilis restaurant: https://t.co/jw76381O8K — Chili's Grill & Bar (@Chilis) February 7, 2017

During a 2018 appearance on The Late, Late Show , Fischer told host James Corden that she prepared for the scene by going out and getting drunk with co-star B.J. Novak, who played “fire guy” Ryan Howard.

“I had a drink, and he asked me how I was feeling and we analyzed it. Then I had another drink and he asked me how I was feeling. And then I had another drink,” she said. “I don’t remember a lot after that. But I researched it!”

The iconic line has since been heavily memed and is often used in response to a scenario that unexpectedly goes your way.

3. The Office meme where Jim looks at the camera

One of the best parts of The Office was that the show being framed as a documentary allowed the characters to break the fourth wall in hilarious ways. After all, it was that formula that gave us Jim Halpert looking directly into the camera whenever something particularly awkward or ridiculous was happening.

Jim’s many looks of uncomfortable disbelief have taken on a life of their own on the internet over the years, with Office fans frequently employing GIFs of them in response to bizarre online happenings. Even just writing some variation of the sentence, “Looks at the camera like I’m on The Office,” is usually enough to get the point across.

2. The Office meme where Stanley didn’t stutter

Season 4, episode 16: “did i stutter”.

When Michael tries to get Stanley to participate in a brainstorming session about how to energize the office instead of finishing his morning crossword, Stanley takes drastic measures to ensure that Michael understands just how much he wants to be left alone. Of course, while it does serve to get your point across, yelling at your boss in a company-wide meeting usually doesn’t go over very well. And that’s exactly why this moment became an instant Office classic — it’s something that could only really happen at Dunder Mifflin Scranton.

Now, the “Did I stutter?” meme is often used to convey the message that no one need question a statement that has been made.

1. The Office meme where Michael needs to know why

Season 2, episode 22: “casino night”.

There are so many laugh-out-loud instances of Michael hating on human resources representative Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein) that it was tempting to fill this list up solely with those moments (“I hate so much about the things that you choose to be,” “You are a thief of joy,” etc.) But in the name of spreading the love, we’ve settled for only including the time that Michael questions the essence of who Toby is as a person after Toby tells him that it’s inappropriate to invite children to Dunder Mifflin Scranton’s casino night party.

No other line gets to the heart of why Michael hates Toby more than the simple question, “Why are you the way that you are?” And it has subsequently become many Office fans’ go-to response for questioning the shady behavior of others.

How to use memes in presentations

Remember the last presentation you sat through? No? Exactly!

As part of our career and education, we've sat through a number of presentations but none of them are sticky because everyone follows the same approach to presentations.

In this article, we'll talk about why it's important to add humour in your presentation to make it stand out

presentation michael meme

Why use memes in presentations?

Help retain more information.

Memes, often humorous in nature, can evoke positive emotions, capture attention, and create enjoyable learning experiences. This emotional engagement can lead to better information retention.

For Associative Learning

The novelty and unexpectedness of memes make them memorable, while their ability to create strong associations between concepts and ideas can aid memory recall. These associations can also encourage deeper cognitive processing.

For Social Bonding

Memes can foster social connections and shared experiences, positively influencing memory. Additionally, their humorous nature can reduce stress and anxiety, creating a more receptive learning environment.

How to use memes in your presentation?

Step 1 - identify meme-able areas in your presentation.

Look through your presentation and identify areas which are ideal to use memes . Remember, memes are a great tool to communicate problems.

So if your presentation topic is about a solution, consider using memes to highlight them problem to make it stick in your audiences head

Here are some areas to consider

  • Icebreakers - to set the tone for the rest of the presentation
  • Key Problems - to make them remember some of the problems you propose to solve
  • Audience Engagement - to keep a slide in the background
  • Changing mindsets - to challenge popular views or misconceptions
  • Highlight success stories - to illustrate before and after for a success story
  • Closing remarks - to leave them with one key message

For example, if I'm making a presentation on boring presentations. I would use a meme like this. Here I'm highlighting the key problem of how audience feel about wasting their time

audience after losing 1 hour of time after a very boring presentation

Step 2 - Choose the areas to use them. Limit to 20%

Once you've identified the potential areas to use memes in your presentation, now you have to limit them. You should be mindful of the quantity and placement of memes throughout your presentation to maintain their effectiveness and avoid overwhelming your audience.

30% is a rough estimate. If you have a presentation of 50 slides (Why, though?) consider using no more than 10 memes.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself before choosing:

  • Does this section contain a complex or abstract concept that could benefit from a simplified, visual explanation using a meme?
  • Is there a key point or idea that needs to be emphasized, which could be reinforced by incorporating a relevant and memorable meme?
  • Are there any moments in the presentation where audience engagement might start to wane, and a well-timed meme could help recapture their attention?
  • Are there any common misconceptions or stereotypes related to the topic that can be addressed using a meme in a humorous yet thought-provoking manner?
  • Can a meme be employed to encourage audience participation or interaction during a specific segment of the presentation?

Try Supermeme.ai, an AI meme generator that can turn your text into memes.

Step 3 - Create memes and embed in slides

Once you have your meme-able areas in the presentation, you can start generating memes using any meme generator.

Here are some of the things to keep in mind while creating memes for your presentation

  • Relevance: Make sure the meme you create is directly related to the topic of your presentation and reinforces the key points you're trying to convey.
  • Audience appropriateness: Consider the demographics, interests, and preferences of your audience when creating memes. Ensure your memes are suitable, relatable, and respectful to avoid offending or alienating your audience.
  • Simplicity and clarity: Create memes with simple, clear visuals and text that are easy to understand. Overly complex or confusing memes may fail to communicate your message effectively.
  • Humor and tone: Aim for humor that is light-hearted, witty, and inoffensive. Be mindful of the tone to ensure it aligns with the overall mood and purpose of your presentation.
  • Visual quality: Ensure that the images and text in your memes are high-quality, clear, and easy to read, even when projected on a large screen.
  • Get feedback: Share your memes with a trusted peer or colleague to gather feedback on their effectiveness, clarity, and humor. Use this feedback to refine your memes before incorporating them into your presentation.

Once you have the memes ready, you can start placing them in the meme-able areas that you've identified earlier

Step 4 - Practice delivery

Just like any other presentation, practice is very important. However, when your presentation involves memes you need to take that extra step to make sure that the meme really lands. It's almost like performing standup comedy.

Before a meme slide:

  • Practice: Rehearse the delivery, timing, and explanation of the meme to ensure seamless integration into your presentation.
  • Set up context: Introduce the topic or concept related to the meme, preparing your audience to understand its relevance and message.

During a meme slide:

  • Timing: Pause briefly before revealing the meme to build anticipation and give your audience time to absorb the humor.
  • Maintain engagement: Maintain eye contact and use a confident, relaxed tone while presenting the meme.
  • Clarify: Be prepared to explain or elaborate on the meme if necessary, ensuring your audience fully grasps its intended message.
  • Gauge reactions: Observe the audience's reaction to the meme, and adjust your delivery or explanation accordingly.

After a meme slide:

  • Reinforce the message: Summarize the key point or concept conveyed by the meme to emphasize its relevance and importance.
  • Transition smoothly: Use the meme as a bridge to the next topic or section of your presentation, maintaining a steady flow and keeping your audience engaged.
  • Invite interaction: Encourage audience questions, comments, or discussions related to the meme to foster a more dynamic and collaborative learning environment.

Incorporating memes into presentations can elevate audience engagement, simplify complex concepts, and create memorable experiences. By selecting relevant memes, crafting them thoughtfully, and delivering them effectively, presenters can strike the perfect balance between humor and professionalism, leaving a lasting impact on their audience.

How can I maintain professionalism while using memes in presentations? To maintain professionalism, ensure the memes you use are relevant, appropriate, and align with the overall tone of your presentation. Balance humor with informative content, and avoid overusing memes to preserve credibility.

How can I ensure the humor in my memes is effective and inoffensive? Focus on light-hearted, witty humor that is relevant to your presentation's topic and audience. Avoid controversial, offensive, or overly niche jokes that may not resonate with your audience or could alienate them.

What factors contribute to the effectiveness of memes in presentations? Effective memes are relevant, clear, visually appealing, and appropriate for the audience. Their strategic placement within the presentation, combined with thoughtful delivery and timing, can enhance audience engagement and retention.

Can using memes in a presentation negatively impact my professional image? If memes are used excessively, inappropriately, or are unrelated to the topic, they may detract from your message and undermine your professional image. Use memes thoughtfully and sparingly to balance humor with professionalism.

How should I choose meme templates?

Focus on choosing templates that are both relevant to your presentation topic and suitable for your audience. Avoid offensive or NSFW templates.

What do memes tell us about self and time during the pandemic.

presentation michael meme

“I want a haircut” has become a rallying sign for people demanding a relaxation of social distancing rules, and a prompt for ridicule among people worried about the pandemic death toll. What’s in a haircut? We are sociologists who study the self and time. During the weeks of social distancing, we have examined online Corona memes in an effort to map how this crisis has modified our experience of time and our presentation of self.

The missing haircut is just the tip of the iceberg in the recent predicament of the quarantined self. Disorderly hair signals disrupted schedules and stressed relationships, going on long enough for hair and despair to grow. A haircut stands for a fresh beginning, a hopeful return to the way things were.

presentation michael meme

In his influential book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), sociologist Erving Goffman argued that the self is something akin to a theatrical performance in social interaction, not an immutable aspect of personality. Persistent disruption and mingling of our frontstage and backstage encounters undermine the integrity of our self-presentations. According to Goffman, we are constantly staging our identity for the sake of multiple audiences because, in one way or another, we depend on their validation. This identity upkeep unfolds in time and requires a certain sequence of preparation, acting, and audience reception. If temporal order is upset, selves are disrupted, and the ensuing embarrassment can be comic or tragic, depending upon what is at stake (e.g., SNL’s sketch on the pandemic New Normal). In the theater of social interaction, our identities are defined by these performances. Thus, we have a vital interest in the presentation of self. We ourselves assess the efficacy of these performances, along with lovers, colleagues, or strangers in the metro. Apparently minor troubles in self-maintenance acquire existential connotations if they lead to humiliation or other interactional fiascoes.

presentation michael meme

Daily life confronts each of us with myriad opportunities for success or failure in our presentation of self. With so much at stake, social interaction becomes an information game as individuals and groups engage in impression management. The stakes were high before the pandemic, but COVID-19 wreaks havoc on our performances, though not for all alike. Upkeep of personal appearance suffers. Our clothing (i.e., costume) is often shabby, unclean, and in disarray. Zoom and Google Meet audiences have unprecedented access to what were backstage areas. The visible things in our homes and offices (i.e., props) reveal intended and unintended aspects of our identities. As Goffman put it, instead of giving information, we end up giving it off.

presentation michael meme

Social interaction depends on temporal coordination. Shared means of time reckoning (via clocks, calendars, and schedules) enable us to go to school, meet with colleagues, visit the dentist, and have dinner with our family, in concert with others. Thus, a crucial aspect of social interaction consists of our efforts to manage temporal coordination and temporal experience, what sociologist Michael G. Flaherty calls “time work.” We alter or customize our own experience of time or that of others. We are doing time work when we attempt to make the duration of an interval seem longer or shorter than it really is, when we choose to increase or decrease the frequency of a particular activity, when we modify the sequence of our conduct, when we decide the timing for an event, and when we “make” time for something, or “steal” time from someone.

The presentation of self and our time work are profoundly interwoven. Our claims to being a good person are discredited if we are late, if we take too long, if we are abrupt, and if we do something too frequently or not frequently enough. Yet the coronavirus and social distancing have disrupted calendars, have upended our finely tuned synchronization, have distorted our perception of time, and, in this process, they have created a lot of trouble for the staging of ourselves.

presentation michael meme

Online memes give us an opportunity to notice these changing mores of self and time. Simultaneously, memes express our angst and humor, but they also mark emerging efforts at adaptation, which makes them a vivid and often amusing source of data. In order to “work” and be shared, memes must touch a nerve. Memes capture the many small disasters of self-presentation and reveal the challenges of time work.

We aim to spotlight collective reflection on self and time, as embodied in memes circulating online during the period of social isolation and shutdown for the COVID-19 pandemic (from March to July, 2020). Like jokes, memes are a great medium with which to illuminate problematic aspects of the social order, decrying but also enjoying shared frustrations and insights occasioned by the pandemic’s massive disruption of everyday life. Our project was inspired by Erving Goffman’s study of photographs in magazines and newspapers ( Gender Advertisements , 1979).

1. The tribulations of working from home have become the new normal.

presentation michael meme

Telework is one of the strongest disruptions of sequence and timing in our enactment of self. Work and home have usually offered us separate stages and audiences for our performances. Now, the spatial separation of the two settings has disappeared, leading to temporal merging and confusion. Unexpected videoconference sightings of pets, family, or intimate clothing have become a regular source of excitement in pandemic life. Video meetings in half-formal attire and half-underwear, on kitchen tables or balconies, have become common references.

presentation michael meme

The home-workspace and equipment are not up to our usual standards. There is widespread neglect of personal upkeep. Our appearance becomes careless and unprofessional as diligence erodes and motivation evaporates. Instead of “Leaving so soon?” we imagine the Netflix sign-off says “Maybe you should take a shower and come back later.” How we look depends on whether we are communicating with others via video, audio, or email. In the absence of support staff and the usual resources, our children and pets become misbehaving and troublesome “co-workers.”

presentation michael meme

Interestingly, as more and more social interaction transpires online, our hair seems to become a growing existential concern. Our hair is a symbolic banner and often expresses tacit claims to a particular identity. Unruly hair undermines our presentation of self and threatens the validation we seek from others. Controlling our hair is an important aspect of body discipline. Crucially, hair is still visible in our online performances whereas many other facets of our physical presence have become irrelevant. Sight and sound have taken over other senses in the impoverished scenes that we e-play on screens.

presentation michael meme

By the same token, certain aspects of our presentation of self are liberated. Suddenly, hair on female legs is celebrated, and breasts are allowed to move freely more often than before. We can wear whatever we want below the waist in Zoom meetings as long as we stay seated. The memes display celebration as well as frustration.

presentation michael meme

2. There is a blurring of days and weeks.

presentation michael meme

Without the rhythmic alternation from office to home, from morning to afternoon, from work to leisure, and from weekdays to weekend, we lose track of time. The days of the week have lost their conventional routines and distinctive meanings, and every day seems the same. Days and weeks merge into one long and shapeless interval that dilutes self-presentations. There are no special days that punctuate the calendar.

presentation michael meme

3. Time is perceived to pass slowly.

presentation michael meme

Waiting, anxiety, and boredom magnify attention to self and situation. As a result, there is a feeling of protracted duration. Thus, a great many memes represent distortion in the perceived passage of time. Each hour, day, week, and month of social distancing seems endless. Last week felt like a year; March felt like a decade or even an epoch.

presentation michael meme

With the cloistered repetition of our days, time seems stretched to gigantic proportions. Ordinarily, the social organization of time enables us to coordinate our actions with others, but this becomes nearly superfluous with social distancing and widespread unemployment. Time reckoning becomes a basis for exaggeration and joking. And those Zoom meetings? They seem to go on forever.

presentation michael meme

4. It would appear that, for many of us, the vicissitudes of life during the pandemic demand more diligence with self-medication.

presentation michael meme

Coffee and alcohol are two of the most widely used chemical props, stimulating, or dimming awareness, respectively. In memes, caffeine and alcohol facilitate adaptation through humor, self-expression, and weary sociability. Daily calendars are marked with beverages. On an impoverished stage, and confronting a pent-up audience, resorting to mood enhancements has intensified.

presentation michael meme

5. All of this time on our hands provokes despair in some people, creativity and contentment in others.

presentation michael meme

When all structure fails, we collapse on the furniture or floor like children overcome by lethargy and despair. Lying around has become the quintessential position in that grey area between asleep and awake, work and leisure, frontstage and backstage. Other structures that gave days direction and meaning, from horoscopes to regular outings with friends, are also lost. Not much is going on to generate interesting stories for our presentations of self. We are in sore need of quality stories and settings.

presentation michael meme

Yet there is also heroism and hedonism in un-structured time. Some love it, some hate it, some try to make the best of it. In the seventeenth century, Blaise Pascal wrote that “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It turns out that the apocalypse is not filled with zombie terror. Instead, a ruined or stale presentation of crummy self is met with boredom and loathing on the part of an audience that is way too familiar with this performance. The elusive character of our enemy, the new coronavirus, is also partly to blame: its delayed attack, asymptomatic contagion, and lack of horrendous skin marks make it easy to underestimate from the closed confines of our impoverished home theatres.

presentation michael meme

There is a lot of variation in how we cope with the disruption occasioned by the pandemic. Indeed, for some of us, social distancing is normal social life or even something better. Self-indulgence may now be redefined as a heroic effort at containing the spread of COVID-19.

presentation michael meme

Memes point to the emergence of strange outcomes and unexpected benefits. Here, we find new and ironic forms of courage, happiness, and adaptation, as well as complaints about those who do not rise to this occasion. With nothing else to do, we exhibit extraordinary inventiveness and ludicrous inspiration. An entire kitchen is covered in glitter, and a cow’s udder on a carton of milk is pierced just so it becomes anatomically correct. Trapped in these strange circumstances, we may welcome or deplore unruly hair and unstructured time.

6. The deterioration of self during the long period of social distancing.

Persistent social distancing and temporal disruption take a toll on our presentation of self. The memes depict us drinking more, aging quickly, and fearfully hording toilet paper. Look, for instance, at what happens to the Mona Lisa. She was young, beautiful, and carefree. Now she is haggard and anxious – yet clinging to those few means of self-control that she has left, from nail painting to facial treatments and, of course, the stereotypical wine.

presentation michael meme

Overeating and gaining weight are common concerns. Like the cat or the baby, we may consume the food we had supposedly set aside for a possible quarantine, changing our figure in the process. We are eating our feelings and anything else we can find. We mark time and make it go away by snacking. With decreased face-to-face interactions with others, the balance of incentives has changed: There is self-indulgence instead of a finely-tuned presentation of self.

presentation michael meme

Repeatedly seeking solace in our pantries and refrigerators, we envision ourselves as annoying pests at home, constantly trying to salve our souls with something to eat. We imagine that our refrigerator grows tired of seeing us, rebuffing us reproachfully. Food adds to the gravity of the situation.

presentation michael meme

Therefore, a lot of the memes display a before-after design. We were svelte before the pandemic, but after weeks of social distancing we fear becoming considerably rounder. Our bodies could be changing in ways that reflect the newfound inertia and immobility in our lives. The humor in these memes reflects the growing tension between our new time-less and structure-less situation, and hegemonic ideals for personal self-control.

presentation michael meme

There is a great deal of voluntary and involuntary experimentation with one’s appearance. Laughable outcomes offer proof that intention matters less than skill in shaping our unruly bodies and fitting them with props. We inflict these experiments on others (including pets) as well as ourselves.

7. Memes suggest that our intimate relationships have been strained by prolonged hours of co-presence.

presentation michael meme

Our relationships entail demands on the self. Some time for privacy is intrinsic to liberty – moments of freedom from the obligations of impression management. It would appear that we miss intervals of absence or aloneness. What happens to the presentation of self when the individual confronts a nearly unchanging audience? Partners and other members of the family become inescapably and annoyingly present. One’s performance as husband or mother suffers as irritations emerge and relationships deteriorate. Memes depict the resulting discontent with gallows humor.

presentation michael meme

We have been spending a lot more time at home, alone or with our families. The other members of our household witness much the same show day after day. With few new experiences, our performances grow increasingly stale. Constantly on stage for this unavoidable and unappreciative audience, without the wherewithal to improve the script, to renew props and costumes, or to enact dress rehearsals with strangers, the presentation of self loses vibrancy and risks dullness. Tomatoes may be thrown in all directions.

presentation michael meme

The erotic situation, a dangerous but possibly rewarding stage for self-presentation, has not fared well during the pandemic. At the outset, it seemed that a new baby boom might result from months of lockdown, but will it? Couple intimacy has been strained by continuous co-presence and overfamiliarity.

presentation michael meme

Outside of established relationships, the subtle eroticism of daily flirtation with attractive colleagues or strangers is impeded if not impossible. The pandemic diminishes opportunities for the erotic presentation of self. Will there be an upsurge in online porn and virtual encounters?

presentation michael meme

Restrictions, risks, and sheer distance make dating difficult, and change a game that had volatile rules to begin with. Optimism seems more like wishful thinking than before, and emergent dating norms are mocked in the memes.

8. For many of us, our performance of intimate relationships is further complicated by the challenges of home schooling.

With comic ingenuity, memes invoke a newfound respect for the work teachers do and a decided unwillingness to add teaching at home to working from home. Judging from these memes, our ability to teach our own children is more difficult than we might have guessed before the pandemic forced it upon us.

presentation michael meme

As for kids, the most wonderful but also the most terrifying and unrewarding audience at times, our prolonged and more frequent presentations of self in front of them have brought increased risks of onstage disaster. Our usual temporal rhythm of alternating presence and absence, routine time and quality time, compartmentalized by long hours apart at schools and jobs, is no longer possible. Our homeschooling performances cast us in the role of stand-in for absent teachers, but, poorly trained and lacking requisite props, the stage is set for novel forms of bungling and fiasco.

presentation michael meme

Memes litter online platforms. It is tempting to trivialize or dismiss them, but, by turns funny or poignant, they illuminate our thoughts and feelings during this extraordinary chapter in our lives. In new ways, never envisioned by Erving Goffman, they show us that our efforts at impression management are artifacts of dramaturgy. The self is a harried and problematic performance before an audience that may be empathetic or critical. Moreover, COVID-19 has changed time reckoning and temporal experience. Under its onslaught, our standard units of time become elastic, prolonged, and unrecognizable. We feel “stuck,” unable to imagine or plan for an uncertain future, but a sense of humor is a powerful source of resilience and adaptation during these difficult days. It seems that so much has changed, but even in these unprecedented circumstances, memes confirm that the self and time are facets of social interaction.

presentation michael meme

This article is part of the outreach component of a research project, PN-III-P4-ID-PCE-2020-1589, “The manufacture of doubt on vaccination and climate change. A comparative study of legitimacy tactics in two science-skeptical discourses”, available online at https://skepsis-project.ro/ To observe changes in self and time during the Covid-19 pandemic, we collected English-language memes circulating in multiple digital media, including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and WhatsApp, as well as collections of “best memes” available online. We found them by separately scrolling through postings on these platforms every day for more than sixteen weeks, and by using Google Search to locate aggregations of memes related to the Coronavirus. To date, we have assembled 111 memes, but we include only 83 of them in our manuscript in order to avoid redundancy and strike a balance between images and text. The principal criterion for inclusion was that memes must comment on social isolation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We excluded from consideration memes that did not invoke the pandemic as well as memes which were not visually clear or intelligible.

‘Lost for words’: Joe Biden’s tale about cannibals bemuses Papua New Guinea residents

President’s suggestion that his ‘Uncle Bosie’ was eaten by cannibals harms US efforts to build Pacific ties, say local experts

Joe Biden’s suggestion that his uncle may have been eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during world war two has been met with a mixture of bemusement and criticism in the country.

Biden spoke about his uncle, 2nd Lt Ambrose J Finnegan Jr, while campaigning in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, describing how “Uncle Bosie” had flown single engine planes as reconnaissance flights during the war. Biden said he “got shot down in New Guinea”, adding “they never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea.”

Official war records say Finnegan was killed when a plane on which he was a passenger experienced engine failure and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. The records do not mention cannibalism or state that the plane was shot down.

Analysts in Papua New Guinea who were shown his comments described the claims as unsubstantiated and poorly judged, pointing out that they come at a time when US has been seeking to strengthen its ties with the country, and counter Chinese influence in the Pacific region.

“The Melanesian group of people, who Papua New Guinea is part of, are a very proud people,” said Michael Kabuni, a lecturer in political science at the University of Papua New Guinea. “And they would find this kind of categorisation very offensive. Not because someone says ‘oh there used to be cannibalism in PNG’ – yes, we know that, that’s a fact.

“But taking it out of context, and implying that your [uncle] jumps out of the plane and somehow we think it’s a good meal is unacceptable.”

Cannibalism was practised by some communities in the past in specific contexts, said Kabuni, such as eating a deceased relative out of respect, to prevent their body from decomposing. “There was context. They wouldn’t just eat any white men that fell from the sky,” said Kabuni.

The practice was not due to people lacking food, he added, pointing out that archaeological evidence illustrates that agriculture was practised in Papua New Guinea more than 10,000 years ago.

About 79,000 US soldiers remain unaccounted following the second world war, Kabuni added. “They’re spread from south-east Asia to the Korean peninsula and Europe. What is [Biden] implying? All 79,000 that were never found were eaten?”

Others were simply bemused by the remarks. “I am lost for words actually,” said Allan Bird, governor of the province of East Sepik, who was recently selected as the alternate prime minister for the opposition. “I don’t feel offended. It’s hilarious really. I am sure when Biden was a child, those are the things he heard his parents say. And it probably stuck with him all his life.”

Maholopa Laveil, economics lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea, said the claims were unhelpful, and pointed out that it comes after Biden cancelled a brief trip to the country last year. “It paints PNG in a bad light. PNG has already had a lot of negative press around riots and tribal fighting and this doesn’t help, and [the claims are] unsubstantiated,” he said. “For a US president to say that – particularly after a lot of deals have been struck with PNG and the work they’ve been doing in the Pacific – even off the cuff, I don’t think that should have been said at all,” said Maholopa.

According to the Pentagon’s Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Biden’s uncle died on 14 May 1944, while a passenger on an A-20 havoc aircraft that departed Momote Airfield, Los Negros Island, bound for Nadzab airfield, New Guinea.

“For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea,” the agency says. “Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft’s nose hit the water hard. Three men failed to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash. One crew member survived and was rescued by a passing barge. An aerial search the next day found no trace of the missing aircraft or the lost crew members.”

Prosecutors at hush money trial say Trump led 'porn star payoff' scheme to 'corrupt' 2016 election

Donald Trump "orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election," a prosecutor told jurors Monday during opening statements in the first criminal trial of a former president.

"This case is about a criminal conspiracy and a cover-up,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo told the 12-person jury and six alternates. Trump, he said, conspired to corrupt the 2016 presidential election by scheming with his lawyer Michael Cohen and David Pecker, who was the publisher of the National Enquirer at the time.

“Then, he covered up that criminal conspiracy by lying in his New York business records over and over and over again,” Colangelo said.

Pecker was called as the prosecution's first witness following opening statements from both sides. Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche told the jury his client was not guilty because no crime was committed.

Trump, who had his eyes closed for periods during the morning proceedings, seemed much more engaged when his old ally and friend Pecker was taking the stand. Trump craned his neck when Pecker walked in, almost as if to see whether Pecker would meet his eye. Trump also poked at his attorney Emil Bove and whispered something as Pecker, 72, got situated, and he leaned forward attentively when he began testifying.

Pecker did not get to his relationship with Trump by the time the court day ended. The proceedings ended early because a juror had an emergency dental appointment.

Trump told reporters afterward that the case was "unfair" and launched into an attack against Cohen, who's expected to be called as witness.

"When are they going to look at all the lies that Cohen did in the last trial? He got caught lying in the last trial. Pure lying," Trump said, apparently referring to Cohen's statement in the civil fraud case against Trump that he lied under oath during part of his 2018 guilty plea. "When are they going to look at that?” Trump said.

The comments are likely to come up at a hearing Tuesday morning, when Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office is scheduled to argue that Trump has repeatedly violated a partial gag order barring him from making "public statements about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses concerning their potential participation in the investigation or in this criminal proceeding."

Prosecutors have said Cohen and Pecker, the longtime former publisher of the Enquirer, are central figures in the alleged scheme to bury claims from women who said they had had affairs with Trump.

Colangelo told the jurors they will hear about a 2015 meeting at Trump Tower with Trump, Cohen and Pecker. Both Cohen and Pecker had specific roles to play in the scheme, Colangelo said. “Cohen’s job really was to take care of problems for the defendant,” he said. “He was Trump’s fixer.” Pecker, meanwhile, would act as “the eyes and ears” for Trump and would let him and Cohen know about any allegations that could hurt his campaign.

The DA alleges the three conspired to hide “damaging information from the voting public.” That included allegations from a former Playboy model named Karen McDougal who said she had a 10-month sexual relationship with Trump that ended in April 2007. Pecker’s AMI agreed to pay her $150,000 in a deal to essentially buy her silence — a practice that was referred to as “catch and kill.” Trump has denied McDougal's claims.

The situation took on a greater sense of urgency for Trump in October 2016. That's when The Washington Post published the " Access Hollywood " tape, which caught Trump on a hot mic saying he could grope women without their consent because "when you're a star, they let you do it."

Judge Juan Merchan barred the DA from playing the tape for the jury for fear it would be too prejudicial, but he did allow prosecutors to use a transcript of Trump's remarks.

Colangelo said the impact of the tape was “immediate and explosive.”

“The defendant and his campaign were concerned that it would irrevocably damage him with female voters,” he said, and "the campaign went into immediate damage control mode."

It was around that time that the Enquirer heard that adult film actress Stormy Daniels was interested in coming forward with a claim that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump was "adamant" he didn't want that claim, which he denies, to become public for fear it would be "devastating" to his campaign, Colangelo said.

Cohen then struck a deal to buy Daniels' silence for $130,000, Colangelo said.

"It was election fraud, pure and simple," Colangelo said, adding “We’ll never know, and it doesn’t matter, if this conspiracy was a difference maker in the close election.”

Colangelo said the Trump Organization, Trump’s company, couldn’t cut Cohen a check with the memo “reimbursement for porn star payoff” so "they agreed to cook the books" and make it look like the reimbursement was income.

"The defendant said in his business records that he was paying Cohen for legal services pursuant to a retainer agreement. But, those were lies. There was no retainer agreement," Colangelo said.

“It was instead what they thought was a clever way to pay Cohen back without being too obvious about it,” he said. But what they did was a crime, Colangelo said. “Donald Trump is guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree,” he concluded.

Trump's attorney Blanche countered in his opening statement that his client hasn’t committed any crimes. “The story you just heard, you will learn, is not true,” he said. "President Trump is innocent. President Trump did not commit any crimes."

He said the only thing Trump did was sign checks for legal services rendered by his lawyer.

“The invoice is processed, somebody at Trump Tower generated a check, the check was ultimately signed, and there was a record in the ledger,” Blanche said. “He’s the only signatory on his personal checking account, which is why he signed the check.

"So what on Earth is a crime? What’s a crime, of what I just described?” Blanche said. "None of this is a crime," he said, adding that nondisclosure agreements like the one Daniels signed are legal.

As for the election interference argument, Blanche said, “I have a spoiler alert: There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election. It’s called democracy.”

In a preview of his trial strategy, Blanche also attacked Daniels' and Cohen's character and credibility. He accused Daniels, whom he described as "extremely biased," of trying to "extort" Trump, a word that the judge ordered stricken from the record. Blanche then said what Daniels had been threatening to do by going public with her allegation was "sinister" and "damaging to [Trump] and damaging to his family.”

Blanche also said Daniels' testimony, while salacious, doesn't matter because she doesn't know anything about how Cohen was repaid.

The bulk of Blanche's attacks were reserved for Cohen, who pleaded guilty in 2018 to numerous crimes, including some that he said he carried out on Trump's behalf.

“Michael Cohen was obsessed with President Trump. He’s obsessed with President Trump, even to this day,” Blanche said, calling him a "convicted felon" and a "convicted liar."

“He has talked extensively about his desire to see President Trump go to prison,” Blanche said, including in public on Sunday.

He told the jurors that if they listen to the evidence, they'll return "a very swift not guilty verdict."

Cohen said in a statement afterward, “The facts will come out at the time of trial that contradicts Todd Blanche’s mischaracterizations of me.”

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the hush money payment to Daniels. Trump, who has pleaded not guilty , could face up to four years in prison if he is convicted.

On his way into the courtroom Monday morning, he told reporters: “It’s a very, very sad day in America. I can tell you that.”

The day got off to a rough start for Trump, with Merchan, the judge, ruling that if he winds up taking the stand in his own defense, prosecutors can cross-examine him about another New York judge's finding that he and his business committed "persistent" fraud and violated a gag order, juries' finding him civilly responsible for sexual abuse and defamation in the E. Jean Carroll cases and a settlement in a case that found he used his now- shuttered foundation to improperly further his campaign in the 2016 election. Trump's attorneys had argued that all of those topics should be out of bounds.

Trump didn't show concern — he sat with his eyes closed through much of Merchan's ruling. He briefly opened his eyes when the jury was brought in for the judge's instructions and then closed them again.

Bragg was sitting in the front row of the courtroom ahead of opening statements.

Cohen, Daniels and McDougal are also expected to testify during the trial, which is estimated to take six weeks.

The jury consists of seven men and five women. The final day of jury selection, Friday, was particularly intense , as some potential jurors broke down in tears and said they were too anxious to be seated. They were excused. A man also set himself on fire outside the courthouse.

Trial proceedings Tuesday will be abbreviated, ending at 2 p.m. ET because of the Passover holiday.
