What is Google Lens?
Google Lens is a set of vision-based computing capabilities that can understand what you’re looking at and use that information to copy or translate text, identify plants and animals, explore locales or menus, discover products, find visually similar images, and take other useful actions.
Search what you see
Google Lens lets you search what you see. Using a photo, your camera or almost any image, Lens helps you discover visually similar images and related content, gathering results from all over the internet.
How Google Lens works
Lens compares objects in your picture to other images, and ranks those images based on their similarity and relevance to the objects in the original picture. Lens also uses its understanding of objects in your picture to find other relevant results from the web. Lens may also use other helpful signals, such as words, language, and other metadata on the image’s host site, to determine ranking and relevance. When analyzing an image, Lens often generates several possible results and ranks the probable relevance of each result. Lens may sometimes narrow these possibilities to a single result. Let’s say that Lens is looking at a dog that it identifies as probably 95% German shepherd and 5% corgi. In this case, Lens might only show the result for a German shepherd, which Lens has judged to be most visually similar. In other cases, when Lens is confident it understands which object in the picture you’re interested in, Lens will return Search results related to the object. For example, if an image contains a specific product - like jeans or sneakers - Lens may return results providing more information about that product, or shopping results for the product. Lens may also rely on available signals, like the product’s user ratings, to return such results. In another example, if Lens recognizes a barcode or text in an image (for example, a product name or a book title), Lens may return a Google Search results page for the object.
Relevant and useful results
Lens always tries to return the most relevant and useful results. Lens’ algorithms aren’t affected by advertisements or other commercial arrangements. When Lens returns results from other Google products, including Google Search or Shopping, the results rely on the ranking algorithms of those products. To ensure Lens results are relevant, helpful, and safe, Lens identifies and filters explicit results. These results are identified using Google-wide standards such as Google SafeSearch guidelines.
Lens & location
When you agree to let Lens use your location, it uses that information to return more accurate results - for example, when identifying places and landmarks. So if you’re in Paris, Lens will know that it’s more likely you’re looking at the Eiffel Tower rather than a similar-looking structure somewhere else in the world.

Google’s search tools can help with your homework.
Focused on STEM
Google has become invaluable to students and teachers, especially with remote learning becoming a necessity all around the world. Despite some of their shortcomings , the company's tools are generally incredibly helpful, and now, Google has highlighted a few more education-focused features in its core product Search.
Google has added over 2000 STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts to its results, giving you easy and fast access to educational overviews of topics such as " chemical bonds ." The overview provides details on types, examples, practice problems, worksheets, and calculators. The STEM resources and the practice problems have been available on desktops for a while following a smaller redesign , but it looks like Google is only making them more widely available in the US now. Google has also re-introduced its AR 3D models of chemistry, biology, physics, and anatomy concepts, which have been available on phones for a while now . And if you're stuck on math problems during homework, you can ask Google Lens for help.
For the next few weeks, Google has another neat new option planned. It wants to help with complicated STEM questions such as " 0.50 moles of NaCI are dissolved in 2.5 L of water, what is the molarity? " You'll be able to punch questions like this into Google Search, which will help you with detailed explanations and provide you with similar questions for practice.
While the announcement doesn't bring too many new things to the table, it's great to see Google reiterating its focus on education. That's right in line with recent adjustments to the parental supervision tool Family Link and child accounts.

Most Stunning Photo of the 'April 2024 Solar Eclipse' Was Taken in 2017. Here's What We Mean
Nasa's james webb space telescope (jwst) has revolutionized space imagery since its first photos were released in 2022., published april 9, 2024.
About this rating
This is a digital drawing that recreates a real photo. That real photo was not taken by JWST, nor was it taken in 2024.
Perhaps the best part about a total solar eclipse, other than actually seeing it yourself in real time, is looking at some of the absolutely stunning photographs of it that circulate on social media.Â
Following the eclipse that arced across North America on April 8, 2024, posts on X (formerly Twitter) went viral, claiming that NASA's very own James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) had the best pic.
Snopes investigated the origin of the photo at the request of readers. We found a photo that closely resembled the one posted online. However, it was not taken by NASA's JWST, nor was it of the 2024 solar eclipse. A reader tipped us off that the exact image present in the viral post was actually a recreation of the same photo we discovered created by an artist named Cathrin Machin. Here's what we found:
First, we investigated social media profiles from NASA and JWST — we figured that the scientists and astronomers who took the photo would be proud of the telescope's capture and post about it.
Instead, we found posts from the official JWST X account explaining that the Webb telescope cannot look at the sun, because it was designed to detect and view much, much fainter signals. JWST was designed with a sunshield specifically to block sunlight from interfering with the instruments. This means that the image could never have been taken by Webb.
Next, we ran the image through reverse-image search engines like TinEye and Google Lens , which provided us with mixed results. While TinEye found no matches, Google Lens came up with several, many of which, we noted, were posted before the eclipse on April 8. So, in addition to not being from JWST, the image isn't of the 2024 North American solar eclipse.
It does actually show a solar eclipse in North America — it's just the one that happened on Aug. 21, 2017 . Several of the links provided by the Google Lens search credited the picture to Dr. Sebastian Voltmer , a filmmaker and astrophotographer.
By looking at Voltmer's social media , we confirmed he took the original photo, with the best version of the photo coming from his Flickr page . According to the details provided in the Flickr caption, Voltmer captured the image through a telescope in Wyoming using a photographic technique called HDR, which combines several different images taken with different exposure lengths to best capture detail in images with high light/dark contrast. When Voltmer posted the photo to social media , he rotated it 90 degrees to fit a vertical aspect ratio.
In 2020, Australian artist Cathrin Machin took Voltmer's social media image and redrew it in painstaking detail over the course of 10 days. Comparing Machin's version, posted on her Instagram page , to the versions that went viral after the 2024 eclipse, the colors cleanly matched. We suspect that Machin's image was mirrored and filtered, which may be why we did not find it using reverse-image search sites like TinEye.
So, no, the image in question was not taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. However, don't think of it as a discredit on the limitations of JWST — instead, think of it more as a credit to the telescope, which has changed our perception of astronomical imaging ever since its launch, astrophotographers like Voltmer, who managed to take an absolutely stunning photo from the Earth's surface, and talented artists like Machin that add even more on top.

O.J. Simpson dead at 76
By Tori B. Powell , Ashley Williams, Matt Meyer and Adrienne Vogt , CNN
We've wrapped up our live coverage. You can read more about the life of O.J. Simpson by scrolling through the posts below.
Attorney for Simpson expresses condolences to his family
From CNN’s Stephanie Becker
Attorney Carl Douglas, who represented O.J. Simpson during his murder trial alongside Robert Kardashian and Johnnie Cochran, expressed condolences to Simpson's children upon the news of his death.
"I was shocked and surprised to hear of O.J. Simpson's death at the relatively young age of 76," Douglas said.
"I expect our names will forever be linked together in some way," he continued, adding, "may he rest in peace."
Kardashian died in 2003, and Cochran died in 2005.
Simpson's death is a reminder of the system "failing battered women," attorney Gloria Allred says
Gloria Allred, the star Los Angeles attorney who represented Nicole Brown Simpson's family during O.J. Simpson's criminal trial, said the former football star's death is a reminder of the justice system "failing battered women" and allowing "celebrity men to avoid true justice."
Simpson was acquitted of murder in the 1995 criminal case stemming from the brutal killings of Brown Simpson, his ex-wife, and her friend Ron Goldman. A civil trial jury unanimously deemed Simpson liable for the deaths two years later.
The couple's years together were rife with allegations of domestic violence and reports of abuse.
In a statement Thursday, Allred once again accused Simpson of the murder, and she referenced an alleged episode of domestic violence that occurred five years prior to Brown Simpson's death.
"Even though he beat her, inflicted a black eye on her, and left her terrified hiding in the bushes, in 1989 he was never jailed by a judge for the spousal violence to which she was subjected and to which he plead no contest," the lawyer wrote.
"Simpson’s death reminds us that the legal system even 30 years later is still failing battered women, and that the power of celebrity men to avoid true justice for the harm that they inflict on their wives or significant others is still a major obstacle to the right of women to be free of the gender violence to which they are still subjected," Allred wrote.
CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister, Dakin Andone and Ray Sanchez contributed reporting to this post.
Photos: O.J. Simpson through the years
From the CNN photo team
O.J. Simpson was a highly decorated athlete — winning the 1968 Heisman Trophy at University of Southern California and then starring in the NFL — before he became one of the most controversial figures of the late 20th century when he was charged with the murders of his former wife and her friend.
A jury found him not guilty in a trial that saw America's fascination with celebrity collide with its centuries long struggle with race, as well as issues of class, policing and criminal justice.
The trial held the country's attention in a vise grip for nearly nine months, and remained a cultural touchstone up through Simpson's family announcing his death from cancer Thursday.

Ron Goldman's father says Simpson's death is a painful reminder of loss of his son
From CNN's Dakin Andone and Ray Sanchez
Fred Goldman, the father of Ron Goldman — who was killed alongside his friend Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994 — told People magazine O.J. Simpson's death is a "reminder for us how long Ron has been gone, how long we have missed him and nothing more than that."
“That is the only thing that is important today. It is the pain from then until now. There is nothing today that is more important than the loss of my son and the loss of Nicole," he said.
What to know about the 2007 robbery that landed Simpson behind bars
From CNN staff
O.J. Simpson was released from prison  in 2017 after serving about nine years of a 33-year sentence for a kidnapping and armed robbery in Las Vegas.
In the 2007 robbery, Simpson was part of a group that raided a hotel and casino to steal sports memorabilia from two dealers at gunpoint.
Simpson was convicted on charges including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The former college and pro football star said at his sentencing that he was trying to reclaim family heirlooms and other personal items that had been stolen from him, and claimed he was unaware his associates were carrying guns.
During his years in prison , Simpson passed the time playing fantasy football, coaching softball, and, at least in the beginning, eating lots of junk food, according to guards and an inmate who were there with him.
Simpson was granted an early parole discharge in 2021 , according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
Simpson spent a lifetime in the limelight, first for his athletic prowess in college and the NFL, then as an actor and pitchman, then as a murder suspect in the 1994 killing of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.
O.J. Simpson's infamous white Bronco chase sparked one of the most-watched events in TV history
From CNN's Doug Criss
On June 17, 1994, O.J. Simpson got into a white Ford Bronco and rode down a Los Angeles interstate, starting one of the most-watched events in TV history .
That was the day Simpson was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. He was supposed to have turned himself in to face the charges but didn’t. He was declared a fugitive and a warrant was put out for his arrest.
At about 6:45 p.m., police saw Simpson on the expressway in a white Ford Bronco driven by his best friend and former teammate, Al Cowlings. Simpson was riding in the back, and he reportedly had a gun. And with that, the 60-mile, two-hour, low-speed pursuit through Southern California was on.
A cavalcade of police cars followed in pursuit. TV helicopters swooped in to join the chase. As the Bronco traveled under highway overpasses, crowds of people cheered Simpson on with shouts and signs.
About 95 million people watched the chase that night in total.
Watch CNN's coverage at the time:
Simpson was receiving chemotherapy treatment for prostate cancer, Hall of Fame president says
O.J. Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and received chemotherapy treatment before he died, Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said in a statement Thursday, after the former running back's family confirmed his death.
CNN has recently reported on a stark racial disparity in prostate cancer diagnoses , which has spurred health advocates to urge  Black men to consider getting prostate cancer screenings.
One in six Black men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the advocacy organization ZERO Prostate Cancer. Research from the American Cancer Society shows Black men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease  than their White counterparts.
CNN's Nicquel Terry Ellis contributed reporting to this post.
Simpson was "not just admired, but beloved" as a household name, says sportscaster Bob Costas
From CNN's Alaa Elassar
Veteran sportscaster Bob Costas, who became friends with O.J. Simpson after they worked together broadcasting on NBC, said Simpson was not only a Hall of Fame-quality player, but embodied "a quality that's difficult to define; statistics alone don't capture it."
"He was not just admired, but beloved," Costas told CNN. "He was, if not the first, he was the first to do it in a big way, an African American who broke through."
Although he was known as an accomplished athlete and "one of the handful of greatest running backs in the history of college football and then the NFL," Simpson also became a household name for his appearance in movies and a variety of commercials, including a famous 1978 Hertz car rental commercial showing Simpson running through an airport.
"Everything about him, people feel it, more or less," Costas said.
Sports analyst Christine Brennan called Simpson an "American icon" who transcended sports.
“What we see now with athletes today, be it Caitlin Clark recently, of course Tom Brady, Serena Williams, LeBron (James), I could go on and on, the first-name basis that we’re on with these athletes, the fact that we absolutely expect to see them on commercials,” Brennan told CNN. “This, to me, really started with O.J. and the Hertz commercials."
Even people who didn't watch sports or knew him as an athlete recognized who Simpson was, she added.
“I knew him as an athlete, but I also knew him as a pitch man, and that crossover appeal into every living room, so even if you didn’t love football, you knew O.J. because of his ability to transcend sports and of course become the businessman and the pitchman that he was," Brennan said.
“And then the trial, and the civil trial, the civil case he lost, and the fall from grace that was extraordinary and well-deserved, absolutely self-induced, and a man that would never be seen the same again," she added.

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.
Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.
Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.Â
The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.
Total solar eclipse 2024 highlights: Live coverage, videos and more

Here are moments of the celestial activities across the country:
