Writing an IELTS Essay Introduction

In the writing for task 2, you must write an IELTS essay introduction , but you only have 40 minutes.

In this time you need to analyze the question, brainstorm ideas to write about, formulate an essay plan, and then write your response. Even for a native writer of English, this is a lot to do in 40 minutes!

So you need to use your time carefully . You need a good IELTS essay introduction, but one thing you do not want to do is spend too long writing it so that you end up rushing your paragraphs. Your paragraphs are the most important thing as they contain all your supporting arguments and demonstrate how good you are at organizing your ideas.

The Two Elements of an IELTS Essay Introduction

You therefore need a method to write your IELTS essay introduction fairly quickly. When you write an introduction, you should make sure you do two things:

Write a sentence (or two) introducing the topic and giving some background facts about it
Tell the reader what you are going to be writing about (thesis statement)

How you do this will vary depending on the question, but here is an example:

Blood sports have become a hot topic for debate in recent years. As society develops it is increasingly seen as an uncivilized activity and cruel to the helpless animals that are killed. Blood sports should be banned.

To what extent to you agree or disagree?

Sample IELTS essay introduction:

Despite the fact that killing animals for sport is popular in modern society, it remains a contentious issue. I believe that blood sports are cruel and uncivilized and so should be banned as soon as possible.

This does the following things:

First sentence: consists of the topic plus some background facts on the topic which have been taken from the rubric.
Second sentence: gives the writers opinion and tells us that in the essay the writer will be arguing the reasons why it is cruel.

The topic does not have to be in the first sentence, but it should be made clear somewhere in the introduction. You must always have a thesis.

Paraphrasing

Another important point - don't copy from the question! You must paraphrase (put it in your own words). To do this you can use synonyms and move the order of the sentence around.

Using some of the same words is acceptable, but don't copy whole phrases .

You can see how the question above has been paraphrased. All the information is from the question, but it has been written in a different way and has not been copied.

Some people think children in secondary school should study international news as part of the curriculum. Others think that this would be a waste of time as there are already too many subjects for children to concentrate on.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

While some people are of the opinion that it would be useful to include international news as a subject in the school curriculum, others believe that this is a waste of students time because they are already overloaded with subjects to study. This essay will examine both sides of the issue.

This tutorial contains useful phrases and vocabulary for IELTS writing task 2 .

When students ask for general lines for writing task 2, they are looking for phrases that are going to impress the examiner but can be used flexibly.

Use these phrases for introductions, body paragraphs, and supporting sentences. Copy and adapt them . This is perfectly legitimate, however, you absolutely must adapt the phrases to your essay topic in the IELTS exam !

1. Useful phrase best for introductions

This essay will analyse this issue using the examples from… to demonstrate points and support arguments.

You will need to supply examples in accordance with your particular topic. For instance:

This essay will analyse this issue using examples from wartime countries and conflict zones to demonstrate points and support arguments.

This essay will analyse this issue using examples from Canada, Australia and Rwanda to demonstrate points and support arguments.

Many students struggle with starters for writing task 2, but there is no need to memorise more than one or two. One of the best starting lines for writing task 2 is:

It is undeniable that ___(insert problem from question)___ is one of the most challenging issues in the western world.

You can adapt this slightly to become:

In the modern world… (insert problem from question)___ is one of the most challenging issues of our time.

2. A phrase best for body paragraphs showing opinions

When injecting an opposing thought, the best general line for task 2 is that instead of using only “However,” you can use:

However, it should not be forgotten (that)… and add the opposing point. Even if you strongly disagree, you must object in a proper way and using good vocabulary as practiced in higher education.

Same idea, much higher level of vocabulary.

3. A phrase best for body paragraphs showing examples

A great way to boost your IELTS writing task 2 vocabulary (lexical resource) score is to cite examples from research or studies made, using the phrase,

“For example, a recent study by _________ showed…”

“There are also studies being performed on a global level to discover the source of these important problems. One solution proposed by the _ (insert global organisation) ___ is to_________.”

For instance:

Cite examples from research or studies made, using the phrase,

“For example, numerous studies by _________ showed that people support…”

“There are also studies being performed on a global level such as those concerning global warming, to discover the source of these important problems. One solution proposed by the _ (insert global organisation) ___ is to_________.”

For example, a recent study by the WTO (or U.K. government ) showed pressing issues… (then supply the details of the findings).

4. Best for body paragraphs

It is fairly easy to comprehend the arguments as to why this proposal has been made.

There would be at least two facets to this proposal.

There is also, however, a strong argument not to implement this proposal.

The issue of __X__ in western / African countries has grown in importance over the past few decades .

The issue of __X__ in most continents has fallen in importance over the past few years .

5. Best for supporting sentences

Instead of saying “There is proof that…” you can say, instead:

There is ample evidence to suggest that…

There is ample evidence to suggest that scientists will promptly discover…

There is ample evidence to suggest that local governments will be implementing …

6. Best for supporting conclusions

Give your findings a supportive introduction using the phrase:

Numerous studies have consistently found that …

Then provide your conclusion, for instance:

Numerous studies have consistently found that children from economically advanced countries…

Numerous studies have consistently found that students who learn three languages have a reduced chance of contracting Alzheimer’s.

7. A phrase best for strengthening an argument by being specific

It’s also useful to memorise some general lines for IELTS writing task 2 that can be used flexibly anywhere in the body paragraphs.

Instead of generalising, enumerate or cite samples. For instance:

Recent electronic gadgets have…

Electronic gadgets such as the smartphone, the laptop, and the 3D printer have drastically increased worker productivity.

Serious diseases are a recurring matter…

Serious diseases such as malaria, ebola and dengue fever bring about a considerable amount of expenses.

8. Useful phrase 8 -best for conclusions

As such it can be concluded that…

This phrase is specifically useful during a closing argument, it ties together every trail of thought. Example: As such it can be concluded that in the era and age of technology, globalisation and the need to be trendy, social media marketing can influence what consumers buy. Therefore, when it comes to starting your conclusion, there is no need to memorise several general lines for task 2 on different topics. This one works for every essay type and topic.

These may be little additions of 3-9 words per phrase but many little phrases go a long way toward a complete error free essay. Using the phrases above are going to be much more useful than searching for a ‘phrases for IELTS writing task 2 pdf’ or ‘common lines for IELTS essay pdf’ because we have worked hard to make sure these phrases can be used with any essay type.

Warning! When using these useful phrases for IELTS writing task two…

Make sure you have adapted them to your specific essay topic. General lines for task 2 are all over the internet and if you just write them down as a list you will not get credit for them.
To improve your grammatical range and accuracy experiment with these same structures but using different verbs and nouns.
You can find more structures by reading academic material and copying phrases you think you could adapt in your essays. Academic material is easily found by searching in Google like this: Your topic (crime) + .edu + pdf -this will usually pull up academic reports about your given topic. You may also find some new phrases to expand your writing task 2 vocabulary.

A quick guide on how to find useful phrases for IELTS writing task two (60 seconds!)

Now you need to take notes and exercise using the relevant examples and phrases in your own sentences for better retention. Note that these phrases need not necessarily be copied. Merely copying can cause you trouble in the future. You must make sure that the way you use the phrases and other words fit your essay perfectly to maintain coherent thought and correct grammatical structures as you would find in an English-speaking country.

IELTS Writing Task 2: How to write a good introduction

Introductions are an important part of a Writing Task 2 essay. They let your examiner know what to expect from your essay. That’s why we have put together a quick list of tips you can use to write an effective introduction for Writing Task 2.

An introduction is important to the essay because it creates an initial impression in terms of the quality of your writing. A clear, well-organised and relevant introduction will most certainly create a positive first impression on the examiner. So, what makes up an effective introduction? Let’s take a look.

Tip 1: Stop to read and analyse the question

In Writing Task 2, you need to address all the parts of the question or task in a relevant way. Because your introduction is the first step towards achieving this goal, you need to introduce your answer to all the different parts of the question. This is why it is important to take some time to read and analyse the task before you start writing, so you know exactly what you are being asked to write about.

Tip 2: Begin with a general statement and then focus in on the details of the question

Writing Task 2 questions usually begin with a general statement before focusing in on more specific points or questions about the topic. Using a similar model in your own introduction is a great way to start your essay, but make sure that your general statement is clearly related to your topic and is not too broad.

Tip 3: Use your own words

While it is perfectly acceptable for you to use the task as a guide for your introduction, make sure you do not copy material from the task.

Copying the task word-for-word shows the examiner that you have a limited range of language, which can affect your band score. Instead, change the order of the information, use synonyms, and explain more complex ideas in your own words.

It is also important not to use a memorised introduction where you insert words related to the question topic. Examiners read thousands of responses so can recognise memorised scripts.

Tip 4: State your position

In Writing Task 2, you will need to develop a position while exploring the different parts of the task. It is then important that you clearly state your position in your introduction.

Tip 5: Explain how you plan to develop your essay

Even though this strategy can be considered as optional, briefly explaining how you plan to develop the topic can help you better organise your writing. It is also a good way to let the examiner know what you’ll be covering in the essay.

Review your introduction

Don’t forget to re-read your introduction once you’ve finished writing your essay. It is common for test takers to begin their essays thinking about a specific argument, or a specific way to organise their writing but change their minds as they develop the topic. So, after completing your Writing Task 2, make sure that your final draft still matches your introduction.

Now that we have gone over some important strategies for writing a good introduction for Writing Task 2, it’s time to look at a sample introduction. Start by reading and analysing the prompt, as mentioned in tip 1. Then, carefully read the sample introduction and notice the different strategies used, which have been highlighted for you.

Sample question

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy.

The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Sample introduction

General Statement:

Nuclear technology has been around for many years.

Details:

Whether this technology is used for weapons of mass destruction or as a source of energy, many are of the belief that the use of nuclear energy has more advantages than disadvantages.

Position:

In my opinion, nuclear technology can indeed be a very efficient energy source. However, nuclear weapons possess such enormous destructive power that any benefits that this technology may offer to humankind are not enough to counter its potential devastating effects.

Plan:

This essay will address why the drawbacks of nuclear technology outweigh the benefits and will include relevant examples to support this position.

Just as an effective introduction will let the examiner know what they can expect from your essay, a good conclusion will remind them of the main points presented and will summarise what you want your examiner to remember from your writing. Writing Task 2 Introduction Starting Lines: Writing a perfect introduction for the IELTS writing task 2 plays a very important role. But most of the students find it difficult. So in this article, I will teach you how you can write IELTS writing task 2 introduction easily and effectively in a short time. There are a total of five types of questions in the IELTS writing module. I will guide you on how you can apply this introduction formula to all types of IELTS writing questions

What and How to write in IELTS writing task 2 Introduction

1. First sentence

The first sentence you want to write of every introduction for any essay question type is a neutral background sentence. I’ll show you what that means in a second. I’m going to go through and show you how to apply this introduction to every single question type.

The first sentence of your introduction is the neutral background sentence. It’s broad, and what ‘neutral’ means is that it does not have an opinion. No opinion, it’s just a background sentence on the topic.

2. Rewrite or paraphrase the question

The second sentence is where you rewrite the question in your own words.

You need to rewrite the question. You’re getting closer now to the topic. You rewrite the question.

3. Start with a phrase

In the third sentence, you use this phrase, which is ‘this essay will,’ and you tell the reader what you will tell them.

So, what we’re going to do is we’re going to apply this introductory three-step framework to all of these IELTS essay types:

the problem-solution
double question
agree/disagree
discuss both views
discuss both views and give your opinion
advantages/disadvantages
advantages/disadvantages, and give your opinion.

How to Write IELTS Introduction for Problem/Solution

Let’s look at problems and solutions first. So, imagine this is what you see on test day, okay? It says:

“ Every year, more and more students choose to study online rather than attend classes on campus. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest? “

So, you need to be able to write the introduction of your essay in a very short time. You need to know how to do it. [Writing Task 2 Introduction Starting Lines]

1. Neutral background sentence

Let’s have a look at the neutral background sentence:

‘ Studying online is becoming increasingly popular .’

This sentence is a neutral background sentence.

2. Rewrite the Question

Now, I rewrite the question in my own words. So, here question prompt says:

Question: ‘Every year , more and more students choose to study online rather than attend classes on campus.’

‘ Each year, more students opt to study online as opposed to attending classes on campus.’

3. This essay will…

The third sentence, because this is the problem-solutions question:

‘This essay will discuss the reasons why this is happening and put forward several solutions for this issue.’

How to Write IELTS Introduction for Double Question

First, read the IELTS writing task 2 prompt for a double type of question. It says:

‘Every year, more and more students choose to study online rather than attend classes on campus. Why do students prefer to study online? What can universities do to attract students to study on campus?’

‘ Studying online is becoming increasingly popular.’

Well, we need a broad neutral background sentence. ‘There’s no opinion in there, it’s just a background sentence.

2. Rewrite the question

‘Each year, more students opt to study online as opposed to attending classes on campus.’

3. This essay will …

‘ This essay will discuss why students prefer studying online and provide options for how universities can bring them back to campus.’

This essay will discuss, The reason for studying study online and what strategies universities adopt to attract students to study on campus. [Writing Task 2 Introduction Starting Lines]

How to Write an Introduction for Agree/Disagree Essay

This time, we’ll apply our there sentence writing task 2 formula to agree and disagree type of question.

‘Studying online is far more effective than studying on campus. To what extent do you agree or disagree?’

‘The effectiveness of studying online is debatable.’

There’s the question on top, broad background neutral statement.

2. Rewrite the question :

Well, what’s the question? The IELTS writing task 2 prompt says:

‘Studying online is far more effective than studying on campus .’

We will rewrite it like this: ‘Some people believe that it is much more effective than traditional classroom-based learning.’

3. This essay will discuss…

‘ This essay will discuss why online study is far more effective than campus-based study.’

How to Write an Introduction for Discuss Both Views Essay

I must say, my three-sentence introduction. It works every time like a little Jim 3-step introduction. Neutral background sentence, rewrite the question.

‘Some people think studying on campus is the most effective way to learn, while others believe that studying online is more effective. Discuss both views, don’t give your opinion.’ 1.

This is what I said:

‘Some people believe that it is much more effective than traditional classroom-based learning, while others do not.’

3. This essay will discuss …

‘This essay will discuss both sides of the argument in detail.’

How To Write IELTS Introduction For Discuss Both Views + Give Opinion

So it’s exactly the same “ discuss both views ” type of question but this time there’s a little phrase here that says, ‘and give your opinion. ‘ So the third sentence is going to change. Sp the IELTS writing task 2 prompt says:

‘Some people think studying on campus is the most effective way to learn while others believe that studying online is more effective. Discuss both views and give your opinion.’

2. Rewrite the question:

This time, this essay will discuss both sides of the argument in detail and provide evidence as to why online learning is superior.

You can see that I’ve got this opinion part there as well. So, I’m going to discuss both views and I’m going to give my opinion.

So that third sentence is really critical because what the third sentence does is, you start off with the broad background neutral statement, you rewrite the question in your own words, that third sentence sets the trajectory for your essay. This essay reader will discuss whatever it is and then, of course, in your following paragraphs, you follow up on that third sentence. This is how you write a logical, coherent essay that flows. How To Write IELTS Introduction For Advantages/Disadvantages

Let’s write a step introduction for IELTS writing advantages and disadvantages type of question.

‘Some people think studying online is more effective than studying on campus. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying online?’

Fine, so again, I’ve used a broad background one here:

Question prompt: Some people think studying online is more effective than studying on campus .

Rewritten prompt: Some people believe that it is much more effective than traditional classroom -based learning, while others do not.

The question says: discuss the advantages and disadvantages.

Written sentence: This essay will discuss the positive and negative aspects of online study.

How To Write Introduction For Advantages/Disadvantages + Opinion

Let’s do another one with a three-step introduction formula. This essay will, let’s do the advantages and disadvantages plus opinion. This is the final one.

‘Some people think studying online is more effective than studying on campus. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying online and give your opinion about which one is best. ‘

So it’s not just both sides, the advantages and disadvantages, it’s also your opinion.

1. Nuatral background sentence

‘Some people believe that it is much more effective than traditional classroom-based learning while others do not.’

The first and second points are the same as the previous one. But this time, you are asked to add your opinion. So, we will write the third point like this:

This essay will discuss the positive and negative aspects of online study and argue why studying online is superior.

Because it asked me which one is best. Fine, last one, advantages, disadvantages, as an opinion.

How To Write Introduction For Advantages Outweigh the Disadvantages Essay

This one is the question that asks you this: ‘Do you think the advantages of studying online outweigh the disadvantages?’ So, the prompt is:

‘Each year more and more students choose to study online. Do you think the advantages of studying online outweigh the disadvantages?’

It says each year more and more students choose to study online, so this is not about effectiveness, this is about popularity, increasing popularity. Do you think the advantages of studying online outweigh the disadvantages?

So, my broad background neutral sentence is based on this, and it’s about popularity.

Studying online is becoming increasingly popular.’

‘While studying online does have some deficits, these are negligible compared to the benefits.’

because it’s talking about the advantages here, so I’ve rewritten that part.

But my final sentence. So, what did it ask me? It said, ‘Do you think the advantages of studying online outweigh the disadvantages?’

‘This essay will discuss why the advantages of studying online do, in fact, outweigh the disadvantages.’

I’ve actually just used language from there directly. So I wrote ‘why’ instead of ‘outweigh’ You can write this in your own words, that would be fine.

This was the three-sentence introduction: broad background neutral statement, rewrite or paraphrase the question, and guiding the third sentence. [Writing Task 2 Introduction Starting Lines] I described how you can write the IELTS writing task 2 introduction for all question types such as: agree or disagree, double question type, advantages/ disadvantages question and give your onion type of question. let me summarize our the-sentence introduction formula:

Always make sure you read the prompt to write down your background statement related directly to the prompt.
Then, in the Second sentence, rewrite the question in your own words. You can use some words directly from the prompt, you don’t have to change every word into a synonym.
The third sentence is the critical one. This essay will, and I like the word ‘discuss,’ personally, it just works for every essay. This essay will discuss, whatever. Okay, so make sure you read that question carefully.

The large amount of time and money that is spent on conserving wildlife would be better spent on improving the lives of humans.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years a lot of time and money has been spent on attempting to preserve endangered animals rather than be used to aid human needs. Personally, I disagree with this philosophy and the remainder of this essay shall outline my reasons for this position.

Firstly, the value of a human life is greater than the value of an animal’s life. Every person that has ever been born has had a loving mother, or father who cared deeply about them. Most people also enjoy close relationships with other relatives and friends too. Therefore when any human life is destroyed it impacts upon more than just that one individual. However, when an animal dies the impact is not the same because animals do not possess the same level of consciousness as humans. For instance, humans hold funerals and gather to mourn, whereas animals generally continue with their lives as normal.

Furthermore, if a particular species needs help to survive then surely it is only a matter of time before it becomes extinct anyway. The Giant Panda is a great example of an animal that has basically been prevented from becoming extinct by the efforts of humans alone. The panda itself is poorly adapted to life in the world’s current environment and any attempts to preserve this beast will eventually be proved futile. The Chinese government spends over $12 million US dollars per year trying to keep alive a species which will probably eventually die out anyway.

In conclusion, humans lives are of greater importance and species that are dying out should be allowed to do just that. Government around the world need to recognizes the importance of human lives over animal lives.

How To Start an IELTS Essay Teaching point: Always start your essay with an introduction which rephrases the original question. You should try to use different words i.e. synonyms and paraphrases of the original words in the question so that you can show to the examiner that you have a good range and level of vocabulary.

However, do not try to use words that you are not confident with as it is better to use words that are correct rather than trying to 'show off' higher level words inaccurately.

The remainder of the introduction should give your own opinion if you are asked for it and then say what the rest of your essay will do. In this way you are building a logical introduction which will score highly for 'coherence and cohesion'.

The competitive nature of school where students are awarded for their best among the rest of their performance accelerates their hard work in the right direction. Winning in any activity not just fosters a sense of decision making but also leads to fulfilment and self-achievement.

Moreover, competitive values infuse self-independence and self-confidence in pupils, which brings them laurels in academics, sports, cultural activities, and professionally. This stands true when children grow to become a vital part of a country’s growth. The qualities of governing, balancing work, and pushing the envelope harder to reach goals enable them to contribute to nation-building.

While competitive values provide children with the zest to become the best in their profession, it is needless to say that without the values of cooperation, their skills will not stand effective. How to Start an Agreement Essay

In IELTS writing task 2, you could be asked to write an agree or disagree essay, also known as an “agreement essay.” Today, however, I want to show you how to start an agreement essay . This will focus on the first few lines.

What are the requirements of an agreement essay?

First of all, let’s look at what an agreement essay actually is and what you need to do. Here’s an example:

All cars that burn fossil fuels should be banned and electric cars should replace them. Do you agree or disagree?

An IELTS agreement essay will typically give you a statement and then a line that says something like:

Do you agree or disagree?

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?

Your objective is to state whether (or to what extent) you agree or disagree with the idea expressed in the first line of the question. For the above example, you would either:

Completely agree
Partly agree
Neither agree nor disagree
Partly disagree
Completely disagree

Your essay should explain your position and your view should be clear throughout the entire piece of writing.

Now let’s look at the first lines.

How to start an agreement essay

Considering the above, what should you write in the opening lines of your essay?

Generally, an IELTS task 2 introduction should feature 2-4 sentences that clearly tell the reader what the essay is about and what your opinion is. You should write 1-3 sentences that explain the overall idea (basically introducing the topic) and then you should write an outline sentence .

Important: Your opinion must be stated in the introduction . Regardless of whether you agree, disagree, or have no strong opinion either way, you must make this clear to the reader. If you fail to do this, you will not score band 7 or above.

Thus, here is how you should start an agreement essay:

You often hear people say that you should paraphrase the question. This is certainly a possible approach, but it presents many problems and often results in terrible first sentences. In fact, it can ruin your whole introduction. You can learn about paraphrasing here .

Examples of agreement essay introductions

To further explain how you can start an agreement essay, let’s look at some examples.

All cars that burn fossil fuels should be banned and electric cars should replace them.

Intro to sample band 9 answer:

During the twentieth century, people around the world began using vehicles powered by fossil fuels, and in this new millennium that trend has continued, with a vast uptick in the number of privately owned cars. However, it has become apparent that this phenomenon is causing major environmental damage and needs to be stopped. This essay will argue that humans ought to switch to electric cars.

Instead of paraphrasing the question, I have taken the approach of explaining the wider situation. This is much better! I have used the next sentence to give a more focused introduction, raising the idea of banning traditional cars. Then, I gave my opinion. It is nice and clear and the reader would understand the topic fully before reading the body paragraphs.

A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.

There are numerous ways in which a person can be valued, and these vary widely from culture to culture. They also vary over time, and some people suggest that in the modern era it is more common for people to be judged according to their wealth, rather than personality attributes. This essay will argue that it is probably not true.

Again, you can see that I have avoided blindly paraphrasing the question. Instead, I started with a nice, broad overview of the main idea, then focused it specifically in the next sentence. My opinion is made very clear in the final sentence.

Note: This is a notoriously difficult question and many people struggle with it. I’ve made this video to explain why it is so hard and how people can answer it intelligently.

Using a computer every day can have more negative than positive effects on young children.

Nowadays, it is quite common for children to have access to some kind of computer, and some people argue that this is damaging for their health. This essay will look at both sides of the argument, but ultimately conclude that it is not entirely negative.

This introduction is a little more “standard” in that I have sort of paraphrased the question. Still, it is hard to see that it is paraphrased because it is totally my words and ideas. I have then given my opinion clearly. Note that this may seem like an introduction to a “ discuss both views ” question but really I just wanted to talk about both sides because I feel that there is no clear-cut answer here. In other words, I’m providing balance because I neither wholly agree nor disagree.

Question #4

Some people think that women should not be allowed to work in the police force.

Traditionally, there were some jobs that could only be done by men. These days, however, it is common to see women doing jobs that they were once forbidden from doing. Some people still hold onto the traditional view in regards the police force, but this essay will argue that women shouldn’t be unfairly restricted.

This goes back to my favoured approach, which is starting with a general statement, then refining it to a more specific point. As always, I have made my opinion very clear in the essay outline sentence. Note that I have avoided personal pronouns by saying “this essay will…” This is a good way to increase the level of formality without making it convoluted.

When you start your agreement essay, you should introduce the main topic and then provide your opinion. That is the key to writing a great introduction. Keep it relatively simple and make sure that your primary aim is to let the reader know exactly what your position is. Don’t try to show off with any fancy language or complicated ideas. Just make it straightforward and your essay will be off to a great start!

Opening Line for IELTS GT Letter WT1

The opening line in IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Letter. You need to change the opening line for your letter depending on whether you are writing formally, to a company or another organisation, or if you are writing informally, for example to a friend.

Below are some sample opening lines for an IELTS GT writing task 1 letter: both formal and informal. You can also read how the opening statement sets the tone of your IELTS letter.

Formal Letter Opening Statement

In a formal letter, the opening sentence should indicate the aim of your letter. The first line of a formal letter will show if you are writing a complaint letter, requesting information, answering an invitation, applying for a position, making a formal apology or making arrangements. You will also see that the letter might start “Dear Sir” or Dear Mr …”. IELTS will give you instructions on your test paper about how to start your letter.

Below is are examples of how to begin your letter :

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to complain about … / to request information about … / to apply for … / to enquiry after …. / to inform you … / to thank you …

Full Opening Statement: I am writing to apply for the position of manager in your company which you recently advertised in the Times newspaper on June 4th.

Dear Mr Brown,

I am writing to you regarding my recent stay at your hotel … / regarding an article you wrote …. /

Full Opening Statement: I am writing to you regarding the road works that are being carried out in Church Street, where I currently reside.

Dear Mrs Jones,

I am writing in reply to …

Full Opening Statement: I am writing in reply to your invitation to the seminar which you will be holding on “Historical Artefacts in the Ancient World” on Saturday, June 26th.

Comments: You can see, above, that the first line of your IELTS formal letter is very structured. There is little variety. This is normal. Formal letters are not creative or descriptive, they are informative and without personal reference.

Informal Letter Opening Line

In an IELTS informal letter, your first line will often start with a friendly remark or comment. The beginning of the letter doesn’t always show the aim, it shows your relationship with the person. This means there is a variety you can choose from.

See some examples below for the beginning of an informal IELTS letter :

How are you and your family? It feels like forever since we last got together for a catch up … / How are things going? It’s been ages since we were last in touch.

How are you? It was great seeing you again this summer.

It was so good seeing you last weekend. I just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for such a great time.

Comments : You can see that most of the opening lines are offering greetings or just small talk. It’s a chance to for you reestablish your friendship before getting into the aims of the letter.

I have a question. For an informal or semi-formal letter do you we have to always include our purpose/ aim of writing the letter after we have written our greetings to our friend?

Formal letters usually have an opening line with a purchase stated. Informal letters usually have a greeting of some kind. After this you follow the prompts given for the content of the letter. There are no special rules, just write normally.

I don’t fully understand your comment. The words “and, but, because” are all linking words that should be used in an essay. The words “which, when, who” are used with clauses which are part of the higher band score criterion for grammar. These are normal words to use in any IELTS essay. You certainly should NOT avoid using them.

Can I start my letter with “Respected Sir or Madam”. or Can I loose marks if I do so?

Just start normally. Your aim is not to try to impress, it is to avoid errors.

In my last IELTS exam I was asked to write to a newspaper editor about some issues with local historical place of great importance.

It was not clear to me that is that a complaint, request, suggestion or what is the purpose. What can newspaper editor do for such a cause? so i ended up being very confused and the result was a poor letter. Can you suggest something?

What were the points to include in your letter? There should have been three points. They will also help you understand the purpose.

I can only give advice based on what you have told me. It looks like this is a letter which is aimed to bring something to his attention. Sometimes people write letters to the editor which are then published in a newspaper for others to read. The aim is just to bring an issue to light. For this I would write: “I am writing to you concerning ….”. It can’t be addressed as a complaint letter because you are not complaining directly to the editor – it is not his responsibility to fix anything. But you are writing concerning an issue which you are reporting to him. Does that help?

I mean if the word end with s for possession is it considered wrong if I did not write it?? for example : children’s actions : is this count 2 or 3 words? You will be marked on plurals. If you write a singular answer but the answer should be plural, it will be marked wrong. So, listen out for that “s” and remember that uncountable nouns don’t have “s”.

The instructions will tell you if you need to introduce yourself. If you are writing to a teacher, it will be a teacher who knows you so you don’t have to introduce yourself. Just follow the instructions and plan your paragraphs according to them.

Hi there i took the test only reading part was bit messed up.. due to time shortage last 6 questions i answered without reading them. could u tell me if there are six or 7 mistakes in IELTS general what will be the band score for reading. I heard marking of reading of general test is different from academic test. Is it true? How to check the band score according to number of mistakes for general test?

Who Could Catch Bird Flu First? These Experts Have an Idea, and a Way to Help.

H5N1 is in a better position than ever to move between species and spill over aggressively into humans: This bird flu virus is now thought to have been spreading among dairy cows for many months , and federal regulators have found viral fragments circulating widely in the commercial milk supply chain across the United States (though live virus has not been found).

The one person we know of so far who has tested positive for infection (a mild case) was a Texas dairy worker. Agricultural workers have always been an underprotected population for zoonotic diseases, including influenza viruses of animal origin. When it comes to H5N1, the dairy work force — which includes on-farm workers and milkers, people working in the milk processing plants and in slaughterhouses, truck drivers and other professionals who come onto farms — is among those with the highest exposure.

Not only do we owe these at-risk workers better protection, but we also must do a much better job — immediately — of monitoring and testing them to ensure the virus doesn’t spread beyond our control. Otherwise, we might not find out about a significant outbreak in humans until it’s too late.

So far, bird flu testing of this cohort has been woefully inadequate. Testing is usually under the purview of state authorities following federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Tests are recommended for symptomatic workers. The exact number of dairy workers and other people who have so far been tested for H5N1 is not publicly available at the federal level. There is no excuse to continue only limited testing of this vulnerable population. Any serious surveillance efforts of H5N1 demand that the country do better to ensure proper testing and health care is provided to these workers now, lest we risk being caught flat-footed by a new pandemic so soon after Covid.

This is especially important for a work force whose broader social and economic circumstances may discourage them from seeking out timely testing and treatment. A majority of hired farmworker s in the United States are from Mexico and Central American countries; many lack authorization to work here legally. Undocumented workers may be worried about public health reporting systems putting them at risk for immigration enforcement or preventing future chances of gaining a visa or permanent residency status.

Communication is a further concern. According to a 2019 survey, over half of U.S. dairies have employees whose native language is not English ; these individuals most often speak Spanish, but some speak only Indigenous languages such as K’iche’ or Nahuatl. Many workers have limited literacy and education that dairy farms accommodate with pictorial signage and visual training materials. Any effective bird flu education campaign would have to be similarly tailored to these workers’ communication needs — a capacity that not many health departments have .

These workers are further endangered from a public health standpoint thanks to the industry’s low wages and benefits and lack of enforcement for health and safety standards. In 2019, the Center for North American Studies reported an average hourly starting wage of $11.24 for novice dairy workers, and an average hourly wage among all dairy workers of $13.90. It also found that more than 40 percent of U.S. dairy farms do not provide health insurance , and only 47 percent offer paid sick leave. Significant income could be lost while traveling to distant rural health services for an eye infection or flulike symptoms — health conditions that a majority of the work force reasonably brush off . Even worse outcomes may go unreported out of a fear of losing out on work .

Farms across the country also need to make these workers’ day-to-day tasks safer. Some state surveys have shown that many dairy worker respondents lacked personal protective gear such as masks, goggles, gloves and aprons, or were noncompliant in its use despite the risks of infectious disease exposure.

When protected, dairy farm workers can be a force multiplier for surveillance and resilience efforts around emerging disease threats like H5N1. Individuals who work with livestock on a daily basis, given the right training from the U.S. Department of Agriculture or other veterinary professionals, can serve as field-based surveillance teams; their frequent interaction with animals means they are the first to notice abnormalities in demeanor, physical appearance or production of eggs and milk. They can share information among peers and be provided a public platform like ProMED (the disease outbreak communication system for the International Society for Infectious Diseases) for anonymously reporting infectious diseases to local, state or federal public health authorities. The federal government and state officials can increase support of local surveillance programs, and reduce economic barriers for dairy owners who want to provide better access to health care services for employees.

These efforts are about more than just responding to bird flu and preventing a human outbreak. Our agricultural industry will always be on the front lines against zoonotic disease threats. We need to empower it to protect workers from these biological dangers, not just for the workers but for all of us. Providing widespread H5N1 testing now to the dairy work force is a necessary step — but only the first.
