→ The bus arrives at the stop at 7:15 a.m. sharp every weekday. → Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. → The train departs from the station every hour. → Plants photosynthesise in the presence of sunlight. → Christopher Columbus discovers America in 1492.

Present Continuous

The present continuous tense describes actions that are happening right now or around the present moment. It is formed using the present tense of the verb "to be" (am, is, are) and the present participle of the main verb (the base verb + -ing).

→ Shelly is reading an interesting book at the moment. → James is not playing video games now; he is studying for his exams. → Are you working on your project this afternoon? → Isn't she usually working on her assignments at this time? → At the moment, the chef is preparing a delicious meal for the guests.

Present Perfect Tense

The present perfect tense is used to express an action that began in the past but is still relevant to the present. It is formed by using the present tense of the auxiliary verb "have" (have/has) and the past participle of the main verb.

Subject + Have/Has + Past Participle

→ Shelly has lived in Paris for five years. → They have visited three different countries in the last month. → By the time she arrived, the team had already finished  the project. → I have never been to Turkey before. → He has never tasted momos before today.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense

The present perfect continuous tense is used to express an action that started in the past, is still ongoing in the present, and is expected to continue. It is formed using the present perfect of the verb "to have" (have/has), the past participle of the main verb, and the present participle of the main verb (-ing form).

Subject + Have/Has + been + verb (ing) + Object

→ She has been working on the project since last month. → We have been waiting for the bus for half an hour. → They have been living in this city for five years. → I have been studying for three hours. → Hasn't he been waiting for you since morning?

2. Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used to describe an action that was completed in the past. It is formed by adding "-ed" to the base form of regular verbs. Irregular verbs, however, have unique past tense forms.

→ Susan studied for her exams late into the night. → Tom ate dinner and then went for a jog. → The author wrote a fascinating novel that captivated readers around the world. → They went to the museum last weekend. → She walked to the store yesterday.

Past Continuous Tense

The past continuous tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing or in progress at a specific point in the past. It is formed using the past tense of the verb "to be" (was/were) and the present participle (verb + ing).

Subject + Was/Were + Verb + -ing + Complements

→ The team was working on the project when the power outage occurred. → While I was studying in my room, my brother was playing video games. → She was not watching TV when the phone rang. → They were not running fast enough to catch the bus. → Was he eating dinner when the guests arrived? → Were you listening to music when the earthquake happened? → Was she eating dinner when the guests arrived?

Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action in the past. The past perfect tense is formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb "have" (had) and the past participle of the main verb.

Subject + Had + Past Participle

→ She had already cooked a delicious meal. → The teacher had already collected the exam sheets. → When he reached the bus stop, the bus had already left. → By the time we arrived , the movie had already started. → The train departed , and the passengers had already boarded.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

The past perfect continuous tense is used to express actions that were ongoing and had been happening continuously before another action or point in the past.

Had been + Present Participle (verb + ing)

→ I had been studying for two hours before the phone rang. → She had been cooking dinner when the guests arrived. → They had been playing football for a while when it started raining. → We had been waiting at the bus stop for half an hour when the bus finally arrived. → He had been practising the guitar for months before his first performance.

3. Simple Future Tense

The simple future tense is used to talk about actions or events that will happen in the future. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb "will" or "shall" followed by the base form of the main verb.

→ Tomorrow evening, I will have a delicious dinner at my favourite restaurant with my friends. → Shall we plan a picnic in the park next Sunday to celebrate your birthday? → Due to a prior commitment, she will not be able to attend the important business meeting scheduled for tomorrow. → Based on the dark clouds forming in the sky, it will probably rain later in the day, so we should carry umbrellas. → By the end of next month, they will complete the challenging project they've been working on tirelessly.

Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense is used to describe actions that will be ongoing at a specific point in the future. It is formed using the future tense of the auxiliary verb "will" along with the present participle (base form + -ing) of the main verb.

→ She will be diligently working on her research project. → The team will not be participating in any competitions → Will you be sleeping when I call you later? → Will they not be watching the live concert on TV? → She will be travelling to Paris next month.

Future Perfect Tense

The future perfect tense is used to describe an action that will be completed at some point in the future before another action or time. It is formed by using the future tense of the auxiliary verb "will" or "shall" with the past participle of the main verb.

→ By the time we arrive at the party, the chef will have prepared a delicious feast for us. → The team will not have finished the project by the deadline. → Will you have completed your homework by the time the teacher collects it? → Won't the scientists have discovered a cure for that disease by the end of the decade? → The explorers will have reached the summit of the mountain.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense

The future perfect continuous tense is used to describe an action that will be ongoing and still in progress at a specific point in the future. It is formed using the future perfect tense of the auxiliary verb "will have been" along with the present participle (base form + ing) of the main verb.

→ By 2025, I will have been working on this project for five years. → They will not have been studying English for very long by the time the exam arrives. → Will she have been practising the piano for two hours by the time we reach her house? → Will they not have been living in that house for a decade by the end of next year? → How long will they have been waiting for the train when it finally arrives?

Arctic foxes have beautiful white coats that allow the animal to blend into the region’s ubiquitous snow and ice. When the season changes , the fox’s coat turns as well, adopting a brown or gray appearance. The average lifespan of this animal is 3 to 6 years. It can reach a height of up to 30 centimetres and may weigh up to 8 kg.

What is tense?

Tense means time. Time is expressed by using the appropriate form of the verb in a sentence . Hence the tense of a verb shows the time of action.

For Example:

  • Rohan is doing his homework.
  • Rohan did his homework.
  • Rohan will do his homework

Now we can see, in the first sentence, is doing , which means he is still working in his present. In the second sentence, did , the verb indicates the past, in the third sentence, will do , the verb indicates the future.

From the above examples, we know there are 3 types of tenses:

  • Present tense
  • Future tense

Time and Tense 

The relation between time and tense is not as simple as it appears to be. Sometimes past tense does not refer to past time but present time also.

For Example,

I wish I were at the party.

Here I wish   refer to the present tense but I were referring to the past tense

Likewise, present tense refer to future tense

For Example ,

We are leaving for the airport.

Here, We are refers to the present tense, and leaving refers to the future tense.

  • Present: We are having no financial problems in our family. Future: We will have no financial problems in our family.
  • Past: We had all kinds of facilities in our city. Future: We are having all kinds of facilities in our city.
  • Present: He is not in the city. Past: He was not in the office.
  • Past: Were they happy with the terms and conditions? Future: Will they be happy with the terms and conditions?
  • Past: Riya was a nurse at the hospital. Future: Riya will be the nurse at the hospital.

Simple Present Tense

Formation of simple present tense

Singular Subject

When the subject of the sentence is singular (he, she, it) and with other singular subjects, we add -s or -es to the root form of the verb. We write: root form+ s/es.

For example

  • He loves sweets.
  • Rohit likes to sing.
  • He swims well.
  • She teaches English.
  • The waves rise high in the moonlight.

Plural Subject

When the subject is plural (we, they), or any other plural subject. We do not add -s or -es to the root word. We just write as it is.

  • They read books.
  • The boys play cricket.
  • The chefs cook .
  • We pray together.

First Person Subject

When ‘I’ is used as a subject we do not add -s or -es in the root word.

  • I cook meals.
  • I play tennis.
  • I go to the office.
  • I finish my work.
  • I took a walk in the park.
  • With first person, second person, and all plural subjects we use the root form of the verb.
  • With third person, we add -s or -es to the root of the verb.

Simple present tense used in a negative sentence .

The sentence pattern will be:

Subject+ do/does+ not + root form of verb

We add does not before the root verb of he, she, it, and all other singular subjects.

For example: 

  • She does not cook.
  • He does not lie.
  • Riya does not live near my house.
  • She does not like driving.
  • It does not detect negative thoughts.

We add do not before the root form of the verb with I, we, you, they, and all other plural forms.

  • I do not know the way.
  • They do no t go for a swim.
  • We do not play badminton.
  • The boys do not like cricket.
  • The girls do not like makeup.

Simple present tense for interrogative sentence 

For yes/no question, the sentence pattern is:

Do/does+ subject+ root form of the verb+ …………..?

  • Do I need to do that work?
  • Do you need tea?
  • Does she like mangoes?
  • Does he play volleyball? Do I need to sing?
NOTE: We use “do” with I, they, we and all plural subjects. We use “does” with he, she, it and all singular subjects.

When the sentence is beginning with a question what, when, how ……

The sentence is written in the following pattern

Question word+ do/does+ subject+ root form of the verb…………

  • How does he reach school?
  • Where do I find ketchup?
  • Why does the boy crying loudly?
  • Where does Jack work?
  • How do the girls reach so soon?

Where is a present continuous tense used?

  • An action that is going to take place or is in the progress of taking place.
  • For an action that is to be taken placed in near future.
  • Talking about an action to be taken placed.

Formation of present continuous tense 

In affirmative sentences, the sentence pattern is,

Subject+ is/are/am + ing form of the verb…………..

For example 

  • Ron is playing chess.
  • I am going to the market.
  • We are having a party tonight.
  • She is bathing .
  • He is buying clothes for himself.

In negative sentences, the sentence pattern is:

Subject+ is/am/are+ ing form of the verb………

  • We are not playing poker.
  • I am not going to school.
  • She is not finishing her homework.
  • He is not working today.
  • They are cooking pizza.

Interrogative sentences are formed by, adding is/am/are before the subject, the sentence pattern is,

Is/am/are+ subject+ ing form of the verb+………

For example  

  • Are you singing?
  • Is she cooking?
  • Are we playing?
  • Am I snoring?
  • Are they watching a movie?

For questions beginning with question words, the sentence pattern is,

Question word+ is/am/are+ subject+ ing form of the verb+…………

  • What are you watching?
  • Where is she going?
  • What are they cooking?

Present Perfect Tense

We use present perfect tense for:

  • For the actions which were performed in past but we can see the results in present.
  • To talk about actions that have just been completed.
  • To denote an action that has started in past and is still happening.

Formation of the present perfect tense

In an affirmative sentence, the sentence pattern is:

Subject+ has/have+ past participle of the verb+……..

  • I have finished my homework.
  • The metro rates have gone up.
  • We have done our dinner.
  • She has finished her drink.
  • They have played poker.

In negative sentences, the pattern of the sentence is like this:

Subject+ has/have+ not+ past participle of the verb+……………….

  • The guest has not arrived.
  • Riya has not bought a new car.
  • They have not submitted their homework.
  • We have not done our work.
  • She has not got her notebook.

An interrogative sentence, the sentence pattern is,

For the yes/no question, the sentence pattern is:

Present Perfect Continous Tense

The present perfect continuous tense is used to talk about action that started in past and still continues.

  • They have been telling a lie.
  • She has been going for shopping.
  • He has been playing football.
  • The mother have been cooking food.
  • We have been working since last two hours.

When we use present perfect continuous tense

We use the present perfect continuous tense to represent an unfinished action that started in the past.

It can use to depict an action that started in the past and still continues in the present.

  • It has been raining since last night.
  • They have been working as teacher from last two years.
  • She has been practicing dance for a long time.
  • The baby has been sleeping since morning.
  • They have been working on the project from last year.

Formation of the present perfect continuous tense

In an affirmative sentence, the sentence pattern is

Subject + have/ has+ been + present participle of the verb +……

  • She have been working on the project.
  • They have been dancing .
  • I have been writing all day.
  • He has been going to gym.
  • She has been learning English this week.

In negative sentences, the sentence pattern is

Subject + have/ has +not + been+ present participle of verb+…..

  • She has not been cooking food.
  • He has not met him since last month.
  • They has not been taking English classes.
  • You have not been starting from last week.

Simple Past Tense 

Where do we use the simple past tense:

  • An event that has occurred in past.
  • Describe an action that began or ended in the past.
  • Express an action taken at a particular time in the past.
  • To narrate a story

  • Cath attended a fair at Times Square last night.
  • The waves rose high in the moonlight yesterday at the beach.
  • My friends visited me an hour ago.

The formation of simple past tense 

In an affirmative sentence, the sentence pattern is :

  • I met her last night.
  • The soldier won the battle last week.
  • Police caught the thieves last yesterday.
  • I had completed my homework.

In negative sentences, did not is used before the root form of the verb. The sentence pattern is:

  • He did not go to the fair last night.
  • She did not cook pasta.
  • They did not have a party yesterday.
  • We did not celebrate our son’s birthday.
  • I did not buy that dress from the store.

In interrogative sentences, the sentence pattern is:

Where do we use past continuous tense

  • Express an action that was continuing in the past.

  • The shopkeeper was cutting a piece of cloth.
  • The passenger was carrying their luggage.
  • Last night at 9 pm, I was eating dinner.
  • The king was sitting in the garden.
  • When Abay entered the room, Chloe was sleeping.

The formation of past continuous tense 

Subject+ was/were+ ing form of the verb +…………..

  • Tia was reading a novel.
  • He was solving the problem.
  • Bees were buzzing around the flowers.
  • She was teaching the class.
  • They were cooking food.

Subject+ was/were+ not+ ing form of the verb+………….

  • Tia was not reading the novel.
  • He was not solving the problem
  • Bees were not buzzing at the flowers.
  • She was not teaching the class.

In the interrogative sentence, just put was/were before the subject

The past perfect tense is used to indicate an event that has happened in the past.

  • They had swum in the river.
  • Priya had attended a fair in Pragati Maidan.
  • The waves had slowed down at the beach.
  • My parents had visited the market.
  • We had our lunch before coming.

Where do we use past perfect:

  • We use past perfect to talk about a past event that has taken place after a past event. In simple words, we call it ‘past of past’.
  • When we arrived the film has started.
  • He had learned Chinese before he moved to Hong Kong.
  •  She had her dinner before the guests arrived.
  • We were practicing before the coach arrived.
  • He had to reach early before our boss reached.

When we use past perfect continuous tense

We use past perfect continuous tense denote an action that has been started in the past and continuing her progressing in a particular time in the recent past. For Example:

  • They had been travelling from last two days.

  • You had been waiting here from a long time.
  • Myra had been studying since morning.
  • Neha had been cleaning the room since morning.

Simple Future Tense

The future tense is used to talk about an event that is going to occur.

For Example 

  • The girl will swim in the river.
  • Manya will attend the fair in London.
  • The waves will rise high in the moonlight.
  • Rio will visit Big Bang during his visit to London.
  • I will go shopping today.

Where we use simple future tense

  • We use will to talk about future events in which our own wishes won’t matter.
  • We also use will when we decide to do something at that time.
  • We all use will to express predictions.
  • We also use will to make offers and promises.

For Example

  • They will get married in October.
  • She will make sandwiches.
  • I think team England will win the world cup.
  • I will call you when I arrive.
  • She will go for a swim at 6:00 pm

For Example  

  • I will go to the market.

Where we use the future perfect tense

Introduction

Tense is an English grammar concept. It represents the form taken by the verb to comprehend the situation referred to in time. For example, in the sentence, Yash walked for 2 hours and then he went to sleep, the past tense verb form, walk(+ed) signals the time of the walk in the past. Tense is used to assign a time factor to the sentence. Tenses just like time are divided into 3 parts-

Past tense - I swam

Present Tense - I swim

Future Tense - I will swim

Before we start with the More complicated divisions there are three rules we should keep in mind-

Only indicative forms of verbs are tensed.

All the tenses have progressive and non-progressive forms for eg, I work here/I am working here, are both Present tense. 

When a verb form is a very important complex, which involves more than one auxiliary, it is the first auxiliary that is marked for tense, not the main verb.

Types of Tenses 

Present Tense

Simple Present Tense:: It is used to express daily tasks, facts, and universal truths. The present tense is used to express what is happening or happens daily or is a fact in itself. Adding the letter s or es makes a simple present tense.

Like- Likes

You, We, They: Like to play outside.

He, She, It: likes to play outside

for example-

She writes a book.

Moon comes out at night.

New Delhi is the capital city of India.

Present Perfect Tense: The present perfect tense is used to describe actions that are completed.

I, You, We, They: have killed time.

He, She, It: has killed time.

I have seen the movie you love the most.

He has been to India 

Present Perfect Continuous Tense: We use the present perfect continuous when the focus is on an action that is not yet finished or completed.

I, You, We, They: have been playing for a day.

He, She, It: has been playing for a day.

I have been waiting for the car for an hour.

It has not been raining since last Friday.

Simple Past Tense: Used to indicate an action that happened in the past. It often comes with an adverb of time. Sometimes it can be used without an adverb of time. Used for past habits. 

I went to school.

You worked very hard in exams.

She did not

Past Continuous Tense: The past continuous tense is a very important tense in English. We use it to express what we were in the middle of doing at a particular moment in the past. 

I, she, he, it- was playing in the garden.

They, We - were playing in the garden

I was cooking last night for my sister’s children.

They were not playing scrabble when I checked on them.

Past Perfect Tense: The past perfect tense is easy to understand and to use in a sentence. This tense talks about an event which happened in the past. If two actions happened in the past, the past perfect tense is used to display the action that took place earlier.

I, he, she, it, we, they  - had arrived at the station

We were too late when the movie started. 

I thought I had seen the movie before but I was wrong.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense: Used to denote an event that started before a certain point in the past and continued up to some time in the past.

I, he, she, we, it, you, they - had been sleeping on the couch when I arrived.

Sita was very tired. She had been dancing.

Had the student been roaming outside the classroom?

Future Tense

Simple Future Tense: The period of time after speaking a sentence is considered future tense.

This tense is used to express future events and happenings.

Rule – Will/Shall + Verb (Ist form)

I, He, she, it, we, you, they - will/shall play the piano tomorrow.

Sita will ask the questions tomorrow.

They will never speak about this.

Future Continuous Tense: It is used to express an action that is going or continuing in the future. e.g. He will be distributing promotion letters in the office tomorrow at 12 o'clock. In the example, the action will commence in the future (tomorrow) and action is assumed to be continued till sometime in the future.

I, he, she, you, it, they, we- will be arriving at the airport tomorrow.  

I will be playing football on the ground tomorrow.

She will be writing a letter.

Future Perfect Tense: It is used to express an action that will happen/occur in future and will be completed by a certain time in future. We use the future perfect to say that something will be finished by a particular time in the future.

I, he, we, she, they, it - will have dinner at 10 pm

She will have forgotten him by then. 

She will not have written a letter.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense: It is used to talk about actions that will start at a fixed point of time in the future and will go on for some time in the future. 

The future perfect continuous focus on the duration of an activity that will be in progress before another time or event in the future. 

Tomorrow at 4 pm, I will be on my way to Kolkata. 

It is also used to talk about planned actions or actions expected to happen.

 Relatives will be staying at Aunt Mina’s house.

In the first sentence the Verb ‘fly’ refers to the Present time, in the second sentence the Verb ‘flew’ refers to the action in the Past, while the Verb in the third sentence ‘shall fly’ refers to the Future.

2. The Tense of a Verb shows the time when an action takes place. There are three Tenses :

I. Present Tense II. Past Tense III. Future Tense

3. In order to show at what stage an action is, each of the three tenses has been sub-divided into four heads. These sub-divisions are—

Thus, the tense of a verb does not show the time of an action or event alone. It shows the state of that action also.

I. The Present Tense

A. Simple Present Tense The Simple Present is used to express : (i) A habitual action (ii) A general truth (iii) What is happening (in exclamatory sentences only) (iv) An order or request.

(i) A habitual action : I go for a walk daily. He comes to school at 8 O’clock.

(ii) General truth : The sun rises in the east. Two and two make four.

(iii) What is happening : Here comes the chief guest !

(iv) An order or request : Obey your teachers.

B. Present Continuous Tense (Is/am/are + Verb + ing)

(i) In order to form the Present Continuous Tense, we add Present Participle to is, am or are. The Present Participle is formed by adding ‘ing’ to the first form of the verb. ‘Is’ is used with he, she, it or Third Person Singular Noun, ‘am is used with T and ‘are’ is used with we, you, they and plural Nouns. Examples: She is singing a song.

(ii) In Interrogative form, the helping verb is used before the subject. [Is/am/are + Subject + (Verb + ing)……….. ?] Examples : Are you going home ?

(iii) In Negative form, we add ‘not between the Principal Verb and the operative helping verb. [Subject + is/am/are + not + (Verb + ing) …] Examples: She is not weeping.

Uses of the Present Continuous Tense The Present Continuous Tense is used with the words—at this time, at present, at the moment, now, nowadays, still etc. and in the following cases :

(a) To describe an action in progress and/or the continuity of the action. The girls are singing a chorus.

(b) To describe an action in progress, but not necessarily at the time of speaking. India is exporting onions to the Middle East. What are you writing these days ?

C. Present Perfect Tense (Subject + Has /have + III form of the verb)

(i) In the Present Perfect Tense the past participle (III) form of the verb is used with has or have. ‘Has’ is added with third person singular subjects, as—‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’ and ‘Have’ is added with T, ‘we’, ‘you, ‘they’ and plural nouns. He has won a prize. You have insulted me. I have taken the dose of medicine.

(ii) In Interrogative form [Has, have are placed before the subject.] (Has/have + Subject + III form of the Verb…?) Have they crossed the river ? Where have you seen my brother ?

(iii) In Negative form [‘not’ is used between the main verb and the helping verb.] (Subject + has/have + not + III form of the Verb…) She has not come yet. I have not received any information.

Uses of the Present Perfect Tense The Present Perfect Tense is used with the words : yet, as yet, already, just, just now, so far, since, ever since, presently, once, twice, thrice etc. and in the following cases :

(a) To express an action that has been recently completed. I have just received the letter.

(b) To describe an action the time of which is not given. The train has steamed in.

(c) To describe a past experience. I have seen this picture several times.

(d) To express an action that began in the Past and still continues. He has worked in this school for five years, (is still working)

D. Present Perfect Continuous Tense [Subject + has/have + been + I form of the Verb + ing…)

In order to form the Present Perfect Continuous Tense, we put has been or have been before the Present Participle Form of the Verb ; as— It has been raining for two hours. I have been flying a kite since 2 O’clock.

(a) The Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to describe an action that began in the Past, is still continuing and may extend into the Future ; as— She has been waiting for you for three hours. They have been playing cards since 10 A.M.

(b) This tense is also used to express an action in a sentence which begins with ‘For how long or ‘Since when’, as in— For how long have you been sitting here ? Since when has he been living in this house ?

(c) This tense is also used to express an action which began in the past and has been just completed. However, its result is visible in the present, as in— I have been studying since morning and I am much tired now. She has been washing the dishes for an hour and her clothes are dirty now. Note : Since is used fora point of time. For is used for a period of time.

II. The Past Tense

A. The Past Indefinite Tense Or The Simple Past Tense (Subject + II form of the Verb…)

In the Simple Past (Past Indefinite) Tense the second form of the Verb is used : as— He came here yesterday. ‘Did’ is used in the Interrogative and Negative sentences. ‘Did’ is also used to lay emphasis. Only the first form of the Verb is used with ‘did’.

(i) In Interrogative Sentences [‘did is placed before the subject and verb in first form after it ; as—] (Did + Subject + I form of the Verb…?) Did you show me your homework ?

(ii) In Negative Sentences [‘did not’ is put after the subject and first form of the verb is used thereafter : as—] (Subject + did + not + I form of the Verb…) I did not apply for leave. Exception—I never told a lie. (This sentence means—I did not ever tell a lie)

(iii) To lay emphasis I did try to solve the question but was not able to solve it.

Uses of the Past Indefinite Tense The Past Indefinite (Simple Past) Tense is used : (a) To express an action completed in the past with reference to the time of speaking. I saw many birds in the zoo. (b) To express habitual or regular action in the Past. Gandhiji always spoke the truth. (c) To express an event which occurred at a particular point in the Past. My father came back home yesterday. (d) To express an action which occupied a period of time in the Past, but is now ended. We lived in this house for ten years. (do not live now) I stayed at the Green Hotel for two months. (not staying now) (e) To express an action where some word, showing past action (yesterday, ago. last, etc.) is given in the sentence, as, He received your message yesterday. I passed the S.S.C. Examination last year.

B. The Past Continuous Tense (Subject + was /were + I form of the Verb + ing…)

(i) The Past Continuous Tense denotes an action going on in the past. In order to form Past Continuous Tense we add Present Participle to was or were ; as— The train was running at full speed.

(ii) In Negative form [‘not’ is placed between the helping verb and the principal verb ; as—] (Subject + was/were + not + Verb + ing…) She was not weeping.

(iii) In Interrogative form [the helping verb is placed before the subject ; as—] (Was/were + Subject + Verb + ing + … ?) Were the sheep grazing in the field?

Uses of the Past Continuous Tense (i) The Past Continuous Tense is used to express an action that was happening in the Past at the time of speaking. The time of the action may or may not be mentioned. Examples: The old lady was crying at the top of her voice. They were not making a noise.

(ii) The use of this tense with Simple Past Tense denotes that the previous action was going on when the latter action took place; as— My mother was cooking the food when I reached home.

C. THE PAST PERFECT TENSE (Subject + had + III form of the Verb )

We often make mistakes while using the Past Perfect Tense. We use ‘had’ at random wherever we view ‘past action’ in a sentence in our mother-tongue. I had gone to Delhi yesterday. This sentence should be formed in Simple past. I went to Delhi yesterday. The structure of Past Perfect is— In order to form the Past Perfect Tense we use ‘had’ before the Past Participle (III) form of the Verb.

(i) In Interrogative form [‘Had is used before the subject] (Had + Subject + not + in form of the Verb + ……… ?) Had he left when you came ?

(ii) In Negative form [‘not is used after ‘had’] (Subject + had + not + III form of the Verb + ………… ) I had not seen you before.

Uses of the Past Perfect Tense (a) The Past Perfect Tense is used to express an action completed before another action took place ; as— When he came to me, I had posted the letter. (b) (i) It is also used to express an unfulfilled action in the past ; as— If she had worked hard she would have passed. (ii) It is also used to express an unfulfilled wish in the past ; as— I wish I had won the election. (c) To denote the action or event which has been completed before some point of time. By afternoon he had completed much work.

Use of Past Indefinite and Past Perfect Tenses in Time Clauses We can express time by using some ‘time-denoting’ Adverbs or through Adverbial clauses of Time. The combination of two past actions depends upon their mutual relevance. Examples: I had waited for my friend until he arrived. After he had sailed many days, the mariner reached the coast.

D. The Past Perfect Continuous Tense (Subject + had + been + Present Participle…)

(a) The Past Perfect Continuous Tense expresses an action that had been going on for some time in the past. In order to use this tense we use had been with Present Participle (ing) form of the verb. Examples: Children had been playing since morning.

(b) The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is also used to express an action that had been going on for some time before another action took place in the past ; as— Examples: They had been playing chess for two hours when I joined them. (i) In Interrogative form, ‘had precedes the subject and ‘been’ comes after the subject; as— Had he been quarrelling with you for some time ? (ii) In negative form, ‘not’ is placed after ‘had’ and before ‘been’ ; as— They had not been working on this project for many years.

He behaves nicely at tables, talks gently, remains cheerful, thinks of others, keeps an eye on the company and tries to be pleasant and polite in every way.

II. Rewrite the following sentences changing the Verbs into the Present Tense : 1. No one knew what was in store for him. 2. Work, not worth, shall rule mankind. 3. Why did he abuse you ? 4. Fortunately the fighting was over soon. 5. Meanwhile President Kennedy’s father fell ill. 6. A school bus accident killed scores of children.

III. THE FUTURE TENSE

A. The Simple Future/Future Indefinite Tense (Shall/ will + Verb) The Future Indefinite Tense is used to express the action or event which is likely to happen in Future. In this tense we use shall/will between the subject and the first form of the verb. Normally we use ‘shall with pronouns of first person (I, We). In the same way. we use ‘will with the pronouns of second person (you) and third person (he, she, it, they). (i) In Negative sentences ‘not’ is added after ‘shall/‘will as the case may be ; as— We shall not see the picture today. (ii) In Interrogative sentences ‘will’/‘shall’ is placed before the subject and first form of the verb after it ; as— Will you go to college today ?

B. THe Future Continuous Tense (Will/shall + be + Verb + ing) The Future Continuous Tense is used to express an event that is expected to take place in the normal course or at some time in the future ; as— We shall be playing a football match on Sunday. The new edition of this book will be coming out shortly. When I reach Calcutta, it will be raining heavily there. Will you be taking part in the debate ? (Interrogative) The farmers will not be watering the plants at this time. (Negative)

C. The Future Perfect Tense (Shall/will + have + III form of the Verb) (i) The Future Perfect Tense expresses an action which is expected to be completed by a certain time in the Future ; as— She will have covered half of her journey by Monday next. (ii) The Future Perfect Tense sometimes expresses the speaker’s belief that something has taken place. In such sentences it does not express the Future ; as— “You will have discussed the plans how to celebrate the function”, said my mother. (iii) It is also used for an action which at a given future time will be in the past; as— In two years’ time (i.e., two years from now) I shall have taken my degree.

Common Errors In The Use Of Verbs

* In the past form, ‘Hanged’ is used in the sense of awarding ‘capital punishment’ suspending by the neck until dead. The murderer will be hanged tomorrow. He took off his coat and hung it on a peg. ** ‘Not’ is included in ‘lest’. ‘Lest’ = in order that—not.
