Events and festivals have become increasingly important policy tools for cities and regions. They are able to produce a wide range of externalities, including economic impacts, image change, social capital and cultural regeneration. All of these event-related externalities have impacts and effects on the places in which they are staged. In many cases, these event-related impacts are analysed separately, but in fact the most powerful effects of events are more holistic, able to impact not just on individual economic sectors or social groups, but on places as a whole. Over time, the use of events by cities and regions has grown more sophisticated and complex. The range of policy goals for which events are utilised has expanded, and the range and type of events staged has increased as well. Increasingly, public administrations seek to coordinate the events in their jurisdiction to create synergies between events and to maximise the benefits generated. Event policies make frequent references to the development of programmes or " portfolios " of events (Antchak, 2016). The ability of events to effect a broad range of changes in different places has added to their attractiveness as a placemaking tool, and has led to more cities developing " events units " and other forms of event-based placemaking.

DR. Andriani Kusumawati

The importance of events for urban development is discussed by many experts. This paper emphasizes the event tourism industry and its impact on the economy and local communities. In this article, some cases from the literature of event tourism and their findings were reviewed. This paper examines the important factors affecting the role of event tourism and its progress and prospects for the tourism and hospitality industry. Specifically, this paper aims to investigate the importance of tourism events to promote urban development. A model is proposed based on the concept of shared economy as well as shared values related to the tourism and hospitality industry. The overall conclusion is that city events affect the host community primarily by increasing the sharing economy. The cash addition is important but not at the level that could trigger city development. Thus, the impact on the local people must be central to event management for promoting destination development. Further rese...

Tourism is the movement of people out of their permanent residence to a different location for a temporary stay. It originated predominantly because of religious centers. But after the advent of industrialization, and with the progress in science and technology, connectivity and communication infrastructure developed rapidly and this shifted the earlier objective of tourism from religious to variety of purposes, like education, leisure, relaxation, etc., thus making tourism a broad phenomenon. Now, in 21st century tourism has emerged as an innovative face providing versatility in its types, like, food tourism, agro tourism, heritage walks, cultural tourism, eco-tourism, etc. Simultaneously, advancement in science and technology has led to a transition in the lifestyle of people, has redefined urbanscape and built environments ceasing the importance of the older ones. Tourism is a link between people, travel and built environment. It has a potential to revive the perishing civilizations and cultures. This paper will address the experience of tourism in an urban setup and its influence on social mass. The methodology adopted to investigate this influence will be through case studies. Behavior of tourism as a catalyst on an urban setting will be analyzed and a tourism strategy will be formed. Further the paper will show future scope of the strategies to be applied on any urban area.

Redefining Pragati Maidan - Kartik Khurana

ABSTRACT The demolition of the Hall of Nations has created an empty pocket within Delhi’s heart and also for the people of the city. Delhi now lacks urban spaces which are people friendly and social with growing urbanization, the land is getting more saturated with fewer places to emphasize on a free and green quality of life. Pragati Maidan is a hub for all people from the society and hence an ideal option for taking an initiative to improve the deteriorating social and urban life. This thesis thus aims at roping together all these aspects and giving Pragati Maidan back its glory of the Hall of Nations. It aims at creating an iconic structure that will be revolutionary for the current architectural scenario and will be a revived and lively environment for all people.

SITE APPROACH The site proposal is an eager attempt to pay homage to Ar.Rewal.There is a strong sense of axis from the demolished Hall of Nations to the proposed Convention Centre, implying its superiority maintained. A Nation’s Square has been proposed on the place of Hall of Nations, continuing the journey from the memory to recollecting the shattered emotions of the structure. The central part will be the Public Realm which is an attempt to give back to the city what belongs to the city i.e. returning a living space to Delhi.

FORM EVOLUTION | CONCEPT Our country is known for its unique architecture and style. The best of examples of contemporary architecture have been witnessed in New Delhi and the crowning glory of the city was the Hall of Nations. It took the entire world by surprise by being an architectural and structural marvel. Er. Mahendra Raj, a stalwart made a structure that would stand tall and be immortal for all the architects and architecture students.

To pay homage to the lost Architectural marvel, I tried to re-unite the “shattered pieces” of Hall of Nations which was demolished by the people who are “architecturally illiterate”. Keeping in mind the strongest site context and respecting the past, tried to take the basic unit of the Hall of Nations i.e. triangular pieces are interlocked organically growing out of the ground which are arranged in a particular manner according to the daylight and other climatic factors which are overall seen RANDOM just like the broken glass shattered into pieces and again tried to recreate.

Why do we need to activate convention centers as hotspots for public interaction?

Convention centers form an integral part of the fabric and civic identity of our towns and cities. Due to their ability to accommodate large inflow capacities at a single time, they have an important role to play in facilitating community participation and cohesion.

Site analysis- design inferences.

More private functions can be placed on the site edges where the noise levels are less.

Building should be oriented in the direction of wind- The prevailing wind direction is from SW to NE direction

Only one access road flanks the site limiting the access points to the site. Retail, hotel and offices can abut this edge for easy servicing and public access.

Longer face of the building should face north to get maximum diffused light.

Screenshot 2022-11-01 232130.png

The site edges adjacent to the Airport road and the university, expose these to high pedestrian footfall. The other 2 edges of the site abut the boundary walls of an industrial plot and INFOSYS campus, away from high footfall. Relatively less public functions can be placed here.

A cluster of trees exist at the core of the site, the open space thus created can be used as an interactive space to maximize the interaction within the site.

The 2nd major green is formed at one of the quieter site edges and thus, can be utilized as an extended outdoor space for workshops and exhibitions.

After studying the site and its surrounding context, the potential user groups were identified which were then used to understand what functions can be incorporated in the design that would attract these different types of user groups.

Activated Public realm on the ground floor

Achieved by sprinkling public functions throughout the site., multiple spill out zones on upper floors, creation of activity nodes, breakout terraces for different activities to foster interaction between different users, opening up the pedestrian paths into plazas which become nodes for public gathering and public activities. this helps to direct the pedestrian flow throughout the site., connectivity of spaces, walkable roofs connect the ground to the upper floors, making the built form iconic and the spaces more user friendly and playful at the same time..

Working on this project, I got to handle the contextual research, analysis, and design development single-handedly. This project was a good way for me to conduct self-directed background research and contextual analysis. Research played an important role, since it shed light on the prevalent issues on the site as well as the potential opportunities that I could make use of through my design.  As I translated the different user needs and my learnings from the site analysis and background research, I had to think of how different functions connected with each other to develop a smooth user flow through the site.  Thus, I had to work on multiple design iterations, and take constant feedback in order to achieve that.

Thesis - Convention Center

In literature it is possible to find styles that are in constant fold and deployment. One of the things that most impresses about it is the act of provoking images and sensations in a white paper with black ink. If we use this example, a stroke in a paper we know it as a line ... in this precise moment as we read this line ceases to be a simple stroke and begins to fold and deploy on itself giving rise to letters, words, sentences, languages, symbols and expressions equipped with meanings that communicate an idea to be interpreted.

Democratic Party leaders meet in Chicago this week for pre-convention talks

In chicago, the democratic national committee leaders will pick the members of the party’s platform, rules and credentials committees at the last party meeting before the august convention to renominate president joe biden..

The logo for the 2024 Democratic National Convention is displayed on the scoreboard during the DNC Winter Media Walkthrough at the United Center in January.

The logo for the 2024 Democratic National Convention is displayed on the scoreboard during the DNC Winter Media Walkthrough at the United Center in January.

Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times file

WASHINGTON — About 400 Democratic Party officials will meet in Chicago this week, beginning Tuesday, to learn more about the convention in August at the United Center and to name the members of the platform, rules and credentials committees.

No major floor fights are anticipated inside the arena during the convention, where President Joe Biden will be nominated for a second term.

Outside the United Center, though, will be another story. Protesters are already gearing up to demonstrate against Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war , with some saying they will attempt to shut down the convention.

The gathering, the last major party meeting before the Aug. 19-22 convention, consists of two groups: The roughly 65 members of the Democratic National Committee’s executive committee; and hundreds of representatives from the Association of State Democratic Chairs who lead 57 parties in U.S. states and territories.

The attendees will hear from Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison and Minyon Moore, the Chicago native who is the chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

There will be a news conference featuring state party leaders from the Midwest battleground states, where officials from Michigan will likely be asked about the impact of the large “uncommitted” vote in their primary, a protest against how Biden is handling the war.

Mayor Brandon Johnson will address the gathering, a mayoral spokesman said. Johnson is on a high-wire when it comes to the convention. Pro-Palestinian protesters upset with Biden are part of Johnson’s political base. At least three Jewish lawmakers rebuffed Johnson’s invitation for a Monday roundtable to discuss antisemitism, a reaction to Johnson’s tie-breaking vote in January in support of a resolution calling for a cease-fire in the war in Gaza.

Though the state Legislature remains in session in Springfield, Gov. J.B. Pritzker hopes to meet with Democratic leaders convening in Chicago this week, a spokesman said.

When Chicago was announced as the 2024 host city a year ago, Harrison promised that all 77 Chicago neighborhoods would have a stake in the convention.

The Chicago 2024 host committee, which aims to raise between $90 million and $100 million for the convention, has been working to award contracts and throw business to local, minority-owned event space and hospitality industry and service vendors. Toward that end, association members will visit Mi Tierra, a Mexican restaurant in Little Village to, a convention planner said, “connect with local Latino small business owners” at an evening reception.

Last September, state Democratic chairs toured the United Center and McCormick Place, where daytime activities such as briefings and regional state party meetings will be held. Through the week, association members will get their own tour of the United Center and McCormick Place and visit the eight downtown hotels where their delegations will be housed. The Illinois delegation is staying at the Royal Sonesta.

The meeting comes as Democrats prepare for their first live convention in eight years, with 2020 a virtual gathering because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The standing committees

The main business of the Democratic Party executive committee is to select members of the three convention standing committees. Each state and territory is represented on the rules, platform and credential committees, but their votes are weighted, based on the state’s Democratic and electoral votes for the 2012, 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Biden and his team, for all practical purposes, control the party platform, which will be written in the White House.

Since Biden has almost all of the delegates, there will be no replay of 2016, when presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton’s backers, faced with the strength of her chief rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, gave him seats he controlled on the Platform Committee.

With the Israel-Hamas war a divisive issue, Biden will not be immune from outside pressure to include a plank dealing with the Palestinian situation or some other issue. However, the platform committee will be comprised of his delegates.

The credentials committee has, at present, only one issue — whether to reconsider punishing New Hampshire Democrats by taking away their delegates after the state kept it’s first-in-the-nation primary, even after the DNC said South Carolina should go first. It is likely, a source close to the situation said, that this will be resolved before the convention.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
