I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

Man holding resume in front of a computer

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

Resume created by Rezi.ai

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

Resume created by Resumaker

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

Resume created by Teal

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

Resume created by Kickresume

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

Honorary score: 4/5

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

AI resume builder FAQs

What is an ai resume builder.

An AI resume builder is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to assist users in creating their resumes. These tools often have features like customized templates, content suggestions, optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), custom tailoring, feedback, and revision options.

What features does Enhancv’s AI resume builder offer?

Enhancv offers a range of AI features to help you create your resume with ease:

  • Templates and customization: AI resume builders typically offer a variety of templates that users can choose from. These templates are designed to be both visually appealing and to meet the standards expected in different industries.
  • ChatGPT-powered resume content writing and suggestions: Enhancv suggests content based on your input. For example, after entering your job history, you will receive suggestions for expanding upon your professional accomplishments or skills that align with your experience.
  • Optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): These systems are used by employers to screen resumes before they are seen by a human. Our builder suggests keywords and phrases that are likely to be favorable in these systems based on your job title.
  • Feedback and revision suggestions: we’ve got a resume checker that provides feedback on the overall quality of the resume, including suggestions for improving layout, grammar, and wording.

How do I use ChatGPT on my resume?

You can use ChatGPT on your resume for a range of activities, related to resume building, including:

  • Rewriting or writing from scratch difficult-to-write resume sections, such as your resume summary and job descriptions.
  • Making your resume bullet points more action and performance-oriented.
  • Suggesting skills and other keywords to include in your resume based on a job title.
  • Suggesting extra sections that can help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Using your resume as a starting point for an interview preparation mockup.
  • Using your resume as a base for writing your cover letter.

Can recruiters tell if my resume was written by ChatGPT?

As long as your application is customized with your job history and accomplishments, it’s unlikely that recruiters can tell if you used ChatGPT. ChatGPT can only help improve your resume writing, but lying on a resume is unacceptable.

Are resumes scanned by AI?

Resumes in some companies are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may or may not have AI features. These systems parse resumes and match them with job descriptions. Enhancv’s resume templates are tested for ATS compatibility, though a 100% parsing rate is not guaranteed due to varying ATS models because the content of the resume is more important for ATS-friendliness than the template itself.

Enhancv Executive has changed my life: One week & four interviews later, I will be making 150% more doing the job I chose.

Your resume is an extension of yourself – make one that’s truly you.

AI Resume Writer FAQ

While we’ve tried to make this tool as easy to use as possible, it’s okay to have questions. If you don’t find your answers here, contact our customer support.

What is Kickresume AI Resume Writer?

Kickresume AI Resume Writer is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3 neural network which is a powerful language model able to produce texts that are indistinguishable from texts written by human writers.

In other words, the AI Resume Writer does exactly what you’d think it would — automatically writes your resume.

  • All you have to do is enter your job title, click “Use AI Writer” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.
  • If you don't like these bullet points, you can either edit them or delete them and click the button again.
  • If you like the bullet points but feel like that section is still too short, simply click the button again and the AI will add more phrases to it.

But naturally, since the text is written by AI and not you, you still need to tweak some details in the end. Nevertheless, it can still help you write your first draft.

Is the AI Resume Writer free?

Even with a free account, you get a limited number of uses. Every premium subscription (starting at $5/month) includes a substantially higher number of AI requests.

At the beginning of every billing period, credits are added to your account (whether it’s a month, three months, or a year).

GPT-3 is a paid tool and we have to pay Open-AI for every API request. We’re “buying” the use of their AI technology. Because of that, we had to put a limit on how many times you can use the AI Writer per month.

Kickresume’s AI Resume Writer is able to generate a work experience section based on a provided job title.

All you have to do is:

  • Sign up or log in to your Kickresume account. When logged in, on the dashboard scroll down to Your Documents and click on Create New.
  • When filling in the Work Experience section, enter your job title, click “ Use AI Writer ” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.

Our AI Resume Builder is easy to use, generates unique resumes every time, and uses natural language indistinguishable from resumes written by human writers.

What is an AI resume builder?

An AI resume builder is an interactive resume-building tool that uses artificial intelligence to generate a polished resume in minutes.

The algorithms incorporated into AI resume builders analyze vast amounts of data to deliver personalized content and design suggestions based on user input.

Resume builder AI integration allows users to create effective resumes quickly and easily without the hassle of starting from scratch.

Benefits of AI resume builders

Writing a standout resume is no easy task. Job seekers often spend a significant amount of time researching how to write a resume and analyzing the best resume formats .

An AI resume builder saves time by offering professional resume templates that eliminate the need for hours of research, formatting and writing.

Here’s what an AI resume builder can do for you:

  • Save time and effort by instantly generating the first draft of your resume.
  • Improve an existing resume by incorporating professional skills and keywords .
  • Instantly catch spelling and grammar issues and fix them for you.
  • Target a specific job or industry with data-driven content suggestions.
  • Optimize your resume format to pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS) .

Can using an AI resume builder help you land a job?

Considering the many benefits of AI resume builders, it’s fair to assume using one can help you get hired faster. Does research agree? Let’s find out.

A recent experiment conducted by MIT Sloan Ph.D. student Emma van Inwegen and co-researchers analyzed the impact of algorithmic resume writing assistance — i.e., assistance from an interface that suggests spelling and grammar fixes — on job seekers’ hiring prospects.

Additionally, the job seekers who received algorithmic resume-writing assistance landed jobs with 8.4% higher wages than those of the control group.

These results suggest a correlation between error-free resume content and improved job prospects, confirming the integral role an AI resume builder can play in landing a new job.

  • Leverage AI insights: Some AI resume builders offer suggestions or insights based on successful resumes in your field. Take advantage of these features to refine your resume’s content and structure.
  • Keep the layout professional and readable: While it’s tempting to use elaborate designs, prioritize clarity and professionalism. • Review and edit: After using the AI builder, carefully review your resume. AI is a powerful tool, but it’s not infallible. Look for any inaccuracies or awkward phrasings that might have slipped through.
  • Include a personal brand statement: Start with a brief summary or objective that defines your professional identity and goals. This can set the tone for your resume and immediately tell employers who you are and what you’re looking for.

How do AI resume builders work?

AI resume builders use artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of data to identify key skills, experiences and credentials you should include in your resume.

Although the resume-building process varies between platforms, you will follow the same basic steps for most of them:

  • Select a resume template according to your design preferences.
  • Complete a brief questionnaire about your work experience, education level and contact information.
  • Get recommended bullet points and skills to add and edit as needed.
  • Finalize content and design before downloading your resume.

It is important to note that while AI resume builders are a useful tool, they are not a substitute for human editing and proofreading. This is particularly true if the builder you use features AI-generated content. It is always recommended to have a trusted friend or colleague review the final product before submitting it to potential employers.

MyPerfectResume’s powerful Resume Builder uses AI to provide personalized content suggestions every step of the way. This content is written by Certified Professional Resume Writers to ensure that your resume impresses hiring managers and wins interviews.

Key takeaways

  • AI resume builders are a great tool for job seekers looking for personalized resume content and design suggestions.
  • AI resume builders can scan your resume for spelling and grammar errors you may otherwise miss, resulting in a more polished resume.
  • AI-written content should always be edited to reflect your unique personality and professional experience.

Is there an AI tool for creating a resume?

Yes, there are several AI-powered resume builders available that can assist job seekers in creating professional and polished resumes.

These tools use natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to analyze job postings and extract relevant keywords and phrases, which are then incorporated into the resume to optimize it for applicant tracking systems (ATS).

Additionally, some AI resume builders like MyPerfectResume offer features such as personalized content recommendations, formatting suggestions and expert suggestions (such as what to put on a resume ) to help job seekers tailor their resumes to the specific job requirements and stand out from other applicants.

What is the best AI resume builder?

MyPerfectResume is the best AI resume builder for job seekers looking for instant spell check, ATS-friendly templates and expert guidance every step of the way.

What sets MyPerfectResume apart is that while the builder uses AI technology to serve up ready-made content suggestions, these suggestions are written by Certified Professional Resume Writers, not generated by AI.

AI-generated content lacks the human touch and industry expertise required to impress employers and win the interview.

Our builder offers the best of both worlds: AI technology to offer personalized content suggestions that match your skills and target role, with those content suggestions written by real professionals.

Can ChatGPT generate resumes?

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot tool developed by OpenAI. While the tool can generate a resume for you, it will be a plain-text ChatGPT resume that needs to be copied into a separate document or resume-building platform for formatting.

Additionally, a ChatGPT resume will lack the nuance and personalization of a resume that you write yourself or with the help of a professional resume builder.

Many AI resume builders are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3 model so that you can format and write your resume with the help of AI all in one place. However, you’ll still be left with content that lacks a human touch and is unlikely to stand out to employers.

MyPerfectResume offers content written by Certified Professional Resume Writers so that you can enjoy the ease of ready-made content at your fingertips without sacrificing the quality of your resume.

Is there a free AI resume builder?

Most AI resume builders (and AI cover letter builders ) require a one-time purchase or monthly subscription. However, there are several free AI-powered resume builders available online.

You can try the MyPerfectResume AI resume builder free and download your resume in TXT format. To enjoy additional features, we recommend upgrading to a full-access plan.

Can an AI resume builder tailor your resume to a specific role?

Yes, a resume AI generator is a great tool for tailoring your resume to a specific role or field. MyPerfectResume’s resume builder is a great option that suggests skills and bullet points reflective of specific job titles and industries.

How can you use ChatGPT to write a resume based on a job description?

Here’s how you can use ChatGPT to assist your writing process and tailor your resume to a specific job description:

  • Introduce the job description: Begin by providing the job description to ChatGPT. You can include the key responsibilities, required qualifications, skills and any other relevant information from the job posting.
  • Specify your background: Share your background information with ChatGPT. Include details such as your education, work experience, certifications and any other qualifications that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.
  • Edit and customize: Make any necessary edits or additions to the generated resume. Personalize it by incorporating your unique experiences, achievements and career objectives. Ensure that the resume reflects your individual identity and professional brand.

It’s important to note that ChatGPT is an AI tool and should be used as a guide rather than a replacement for human judgment and decision-making.

Can an AI resume builder help you create an ATS-friendly resume?

Yes, an AI resume builder can make your resume ATS-friendly. Applicant tracking systems are software used by employers to manage and filter a large number of resumes.

These systems scan resumes for specific keywords, formatting and other criteria to determine whether an applicant is a good match for a job.

AI resume builders are designed to optimize resumes to increase the chances of passing through ATS filters. They can do this by:

  • Keyword optimization: AI resume builders can identify and incorporate relevant keywords from the job description into your resume, increasing the likelihood of matching the criteria set by the ATS.
  • Formatting and structure: AI resume builders use ATS-friendly templates and formatting to ensure that your resume is properly parsed by the system.
  • File compatibility: AI resume builders can generate resumes in popular file formats (such as .docx or .pdf) that are compatible with most ATS systems.

MyPerfectResume’s AI Resume Builder also includes an ATS resume checker tool that allows you to test how well your resume will be parsed by ATS, allowing you to make adjustments as needed.

How can AI tailor your resume to a job description?

AI can tailor your resume to a specific job description by using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to analyze both the job description and your resume.

Here’s a general process of how AI can achieve this:

  • Job description analysis: AI algorithms analyze the job description to extract key information such as specific job titles, industry keywords and any preferred certifications or degrees mentioned.
  • Resume analysis: The AI system then analyzes your resume, identifying the language you used to describe your experiences and the keywords you’ve included throughout the document.
  • Recommendations and suggestions: Based on the analysis, the AI system provides recommendations and suggestions for optimizing your resume such as highlighting relevant skills and experiences ow rephrasing certain sections to better align with the job description.

It’s important to note that while AI can assist in tailoring your resume, it’s still essential to review and customize the suggested changes to ensure accuracy and coherence.

Using ChatGPT to write resumes and cover letters

Job hunting can feel like a job of its own, which is why some are using ChatGPT to write resumes and cover letters. Learn how AI can make the process of creating these documents easier as well as its limitations.

Should I use AI in my job search?

The process of searching for a new job is rarely easy. Not only are you constantly checking job boards to find positions that both interest you and fit your skillset, but you’re also updating your resume and cover letter with every new application and editing these documents to suit each potential employer.

Using AI like ChatGPT for your job search can help you if you’re truly stumped for how to express your thoughts. Of course, it isn’t foolproof, either. Because this technology is so new, its output won’t be entirely accurate, and is no substitution for putting in the work yourself. The AI does the best it can with the information it’s given, which means it’s up to the job seeker to be both specific and accurate when inputting prompts, and to make any necessary adjustments to achieve a specific result.

If you plan to use ChatGPT for resume writing or crafting a cover letter, make sure you have a solid understanding of how to write both documents. After all, they’re a potential employer’s first impression of you; if you’re not well-represented because you relied on AI instead of your own skills, you’re not likely to get the job. ChatGPT can be useful for helping you come up with new ways to talk about your relevant skills and experience, but your personal touch is what will really make your resume and cover letter stand out.

Tips for writing a resume and cover letter

Whether you’re editing existing documents or starting from scratch, here are some tips to make sure that your resume and cover letter can help you make a good first impression.

  • Use simple, professional formatting. Use a template to ensure that you’re delivering something that makes you look your best and is easy to read.
  • Less is more. A busy resume can feel overwhelming for a recruiter. Show results where you can and leave off any unnecessary details.
  • Proofread. Even if you’re using ChatGPT to help you with your job search, you’ll still need to look over the results to not only make sure that the content is accurate, but that it’s grammatically correct and sounds like you.
  • Insert yourself. Make sure that your resume and cover letter are representative of you and not a chatbot. Your own personality should shine through, even if you’ve used AI to help you put things together.

At the end of the day, recruiters want to learn about you and whether you’re a good fit for a job. The best way for you share that information with them is with a well-written cover letter and a resume that’s easy to read .

What are the drawbacks of using ChatGPT to write a resume or cover letter?

Leveraging AI like ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter does have a few pitfalls:

  • This AI is very new technology and is certainly not foolproof. It’s constantly being tested and adjusted due to its newness.
  • It may accidentally generate inaccurate statements due to its limited knowledge of the world after 2021.
  • If you’re not proofreading carefully, you may gloss over some major errors. ChatGPT may generate content that is biased or harmful and it’s on you to catch those statements and not use them in your resume or cover letter. The AI may also repeat information between sections of a generated resume.
  • The AI works with the information it’s given. The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input.
  • If you’re not specific enough when entering your prompts, you will get vague, generalized output. Similarly, if your prompt is poorly formatted, the AI may not understand what you’re asking for.
  • ChatGPT may embellish some of your accomplishments. While it may be tempting to leave these in place, it’s never a good idea to lie about what you have and have not done.

This AI is not a replacement for doing the actual work yourself, but it can be a useful tool during the process of looking for a new job. Only you can truly know what you’ve achieved through your work and life experiences, and you’re the one who is best suited to crafting any type of resume or cover letter.

Entering resume and cover letter prompts into ChatGPT

The goal of using ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter is to lessen the stress of creating these documents. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You still must give the AI very clear instructions about what you want it to generate.

Prompts for using AI to write a resume

You can use AI to review an existing resume and provide feedback or tailor your resume to a specific posting. Make sure you ask very clear questions about what you’re looking for, as well as providing very clear guidance to the AI about what its role is. In both scenarios you’ll need to include your resume in its entirety, but if you’re looking for tailored edits, you should also include the job posting.

Prompts for these scenarios might look like:

  • I am going to provide my resume and want you to act as a reviewer and provide feedback on it. How can I make it more readable? Are there any action verbs I should use? Am I using too many buzzwords?
  • I will provide you with a job description for a position I am applying for. Understand the key points and requirements for this role and summarize them. Then review my resume and provide feedback on how to tailor it for this job.

These might seem overly specific but if you’re not specific enough, you won’t get the response you’re looking for.

Prompts for using AI to write a cover letter

When using ChatGPT to work on your cover letter for a specific job, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your resume
  • The job description of the role you’re interested in
  • Information about what kind of tone you’d prefer

You can also ask the AI to review your cover letter for readability and help you get through a bout of writer’s block.

Prompts for these sorts of asks might look like:

  • Write a cover letter for a [position] role at [Company] in a professional tone. Use my resume and the job description as a reference.
  • I want you to review my cover letter for readability and relevance to a job post. I will share the job post as a reference. Tailor my cover letter for the job referenced in the post and adjust wording to make it more relevant.

These prompts may feel awkward to write, almost as though you’re explaining something to a small child. But the clearer and more specific you are, the more pleased you’re likely to be with the results.

While AI like ChatGPT is making some waves on the tech scene, it doesn’t totally replace human writing and editing skills, especially when it comes to resumes and cover letters. It certainly has value but comes with a few caveats. Use ChatGPT with caution, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for grammatical errors .

woman preparing resume for ATS

Through job-matching platforms and AI-powered games and interviews, companies are relying more and more on artificial intelligence to streamline the hiring process. But some job seekers feel frustrated and misunderstood by these technologies.

Malika Devaux is a student at the HOPE Program , a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that provides job training. Devaux is looking for a job, and we asked her to complete a trial of a 90-second personality test, which assesses candidates on the Big Five personality traits.

Her results indicated that she was pragmatic and carefree, but Devaux didn’t agree with the AI’s read on her personality. And she found the test confusing. “I think [this test] would have made me lose a chance to have this position or an opportunity finally where I can shine,” she says.

So how can you make the algorithms work in your favor when you apply for your next job?

In the latest episode of MIT Technology Review’s podcast “In Machines We Trust,” we asked career and job-matching experts for practical tips on how to succeed in a job market increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.

Ditch conventional advice about résumés. Instead of choosing a unique design or color scheme and including robust job descriptions, focus on making it as simple and straightforward as possible, says Ian Siegel , cofounder and CEO of ZipRecruiter .

“Conventional wisdom will kill you in your search for a job,” Siegel says. “You want the simplest, most boring résumé template you can find. You want to write like a caveman in the shortest, crispest words you can.”

In most cases, when candidates apply for jobs their résumés will first be processed by an automated applicant tracking system (ATS), Siegel says. To increase your chances of advancing to an interview, you should submit a résumé that the AI will interpret accurately.

Use short, descriptive sentences to help an AI parse your résumé, Siegel says. Clearly list your skills. If possible, include details about where you learned them and how long you’ve used them, plus any licensing or certification numbers that verify your expertise. “You want to be declarative and quantitative, because software is trying to figure out who you are and decide whether you will be put in front of a human,” he says.

And don’t be discouraged from applying to jobs that require more experience than you have, as long as you meet some of the qualifications in the job description.

“If you have any of the skills listed, I want you to apply to it,” Siegel says. “Let the algorithms decide whether or not you’re a great match, and they will sort you to the top or bottom.”

Create multiple versions of your résumé. Once you streamline your résumé for an AI, you may worry that you’ve damaged its flow and readability. So prepare another version for human review, says Gracy Sarkissian , the interim executive director of New York University’s Career Center .

“Some students tell me, ‘I did what you guys told me to do. I made sure that my résumé was filled with keywords. And now it sounds kind of like a cheesy marketing document,’” Sarkissian says. She tells them to make another one, with a personalized design and format, to send by email or to hand to hiring managers at an interview.

You should also modify your résumé to reflect the description of each job to which you apply, Sarkissian says. Each job posting contains keywords that a prospective employer’s ATS is likely using to prioritize candidates. Choose a few that are appropriate to your experience and sprinkle them throughout your résumé.

Test your résumé with an AI. Upload your résumé and the description of the job you’re applying for to an automated résumé checker like Jobscan . Jobscan will score how well it matches the job description, to help you optimize it for each prospective employer’s ATS. Creating an account on Jobscan is free, and the basic tier of membership offers two match-rate calculations per month.

VMock also provides software to universities and other institutions that issues feedback on users’ résumés by highlighting inconsistent dates and simplifying descriptions of previous roles that aren’t as relevant to the one for which they’re applying.

VMock’s algorithm helps users identify transferable skills as well. The program will say, “Here is something else you did, but that translates into the soft skills that recruiters are looking for,” says Kiran Pande, cofounder and head of products at VMock. “You have communication skills; it’s not necessarily marketing oriented, but you do have good communication skills. You did other things that developed your communication skills. Write about those too.”

Practice makes perfect. Why not use AI to help you prepare for your interview with an AI? Several companies, including VMock, offer tools to help job seekers prepare for virtual interviews.

Interview Stream will ask you questions via webcam and allow you to record and review your responses. The platform offers a 30-day free trial to individual users and is also available through some institutions. Big Interview uses AI to coach users on their interview responses. It offers three packages for individuals, priced at $79 for one month, $149 for three months, and $249 for six months.

The HOPE Program uses a platform called Talk Hiring , which includes 10-minute mock interviews consisting of five questions each. Talk Hiring scores interviewees on their responses, taking into account factors such whether their answers contained a problem, action, and result, as well as the pace and volume of their voice. The platform offers free trial accounts for individual users and partners with organizations for $18 per user per year.

Several AI interview services, like HireVue , Retorio , and Yobs , also let you test out their platforms before your scheduled interview. Some will even allow you to view the personality profile they create based on your performance.

“When we’re interviewing with AI, it feels like a stranger, right? It feels like a stranger without a face. It’s a blank screen,” Sarkissian says. But rehearsing on these platforms allows you to become more familiar with the process: “You can practice, and the more you practice, the better you get at these things.”

And the more information you can find about prospective employers’ hiring processes and the assessment tools they rely on, the better. Job seekers can also find user-generated videos on YouTube and elsewhere about how to beat AI-powered games and interviews, though the quality and accuracy of this advice may vary.

writing a resume with ai

Looking to take your resume to the next level and land the job? Here’s a how-to guide about using artificial intelligence to build your resume.

Using AI to Build Your Resume: Tips & Prompt Examples

Did you know that 99% of Fortune 500 companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS)? Unless your resume is ultra-targeted to the position, it’s unlikely to rank well or snag a recruiter’s attention.

But artificial intelligence (AI) can help. In today’s fast-paced world, AI has become increasingly popular for crafting winning resumes that beat the bots. After all, having a well-written resume can make all the difference in landing the job.

If you haven’t yet explored the idea of using AI in your resume writing, we’ve gathered answers to some common questions. Get a feel for AI tools on the market, brainstorm how you can utilize AI to help you create an impactful resume , and most importantly, understand AI’s limitations and why it’s not a replacement for your personal touch.

Benefits of Using AI to Write Your Resume

Looking to win out your job competition and spruce up your resume in a fraction of the time? There are several reasons AI might top your list of tools to explore.

— Save Time

Realistically, writing a resume from scratch can be intimidating and time-consuming. It’s often a style of formal writing that most of us don’t often use unless we’re looking for work. Add to that the general stress and anxiety that a job search can bring, and the words just won’t flow at times.

With an AI-powered tool, you can input the job description and your information and let AI do the heavy lifting for you . That time you’re saving? You can use it on networking , strategizing , and relationship-building tasks instead.

— Get Objective Feedback

Do you usually have a friend or family member look over your resume? They can provide a fantastic second set of eyes and ideas. But they might also color their feedback to avoid hurting your feelings or unintentionally misinform you if they’re not up to date on industry practices.

AI-powered tools can critique everything from your tone, grammar, and spelling to your job match . That’s certainly not to say it’s infallible, but using AI tools as prompts can help you create a more compelling resume.

— Tailor Your Resume to Fit

By now you’ve realized that job searching isn’t one-size-fits-all process. And that’s evident when you’re writing your resume. Rather than trying to tweak a generic template, you can create a custom, highly targeted document. AI can respond well to industry, position, and even experience-level prompts .

FlexJobs Career Expert Keith Spencer points out, “It’s usually beneficial to give ChatGPT information to work with, like using information from your current resume to revise what you’ve written and make it more impactful.”

3 Ways to Use AI to Build Your Resume

Consider your needs and goals when choosing an AI tool for resume creation. Research and compare features of different tools to find the one that best aligns with your requirements. Remember, one size doesn’t fit all!

Your resume is full of several distinct sections, and you can use AI to assist with each section individually and create a rough draft for your entire document.

1. Use AI to Help Write Your Professional Summary

Front and center at the top of your resume is your professional summary . Often the first thing that recruiters and hiring managers see, your summary should hook their attention quickly.

AI can analyze your career history and the job description . You can generate multiple versions in different tones to help you brainstorm how to weave in keywords and targeted skills .

2. Use AI for Better Bullet Points

Once a recruiter moves past your summary, they will likely scan your resume bullet points . You can leverage AI tools in a few different ways here. For one thing, AI can suggest more concise phrasing . Or, if you’re unsure how to quantify an achievement, AI can offer some suggestions.

When you’ve included the job description, AI can suggest short, punchy statements that match the targeted qualities more closely. That alone can help you rank higher in an ATS .

3. Use AI for Consistent Tone

While you’ll still need to infuse your personality throughout your resume, you can use AI to ensure consistent tone and styling throughout your document.

General AI tools, like ChatGPT and Grammarly, can really shine with this task. These tools will help you polish your resume by highlighting any readability issues, offering more concise phrasing, and ensuring that you’re maintaining your target messaging throughout.

Concerns About Using AI to Write Your Resume

Before you get started, take a moment to consider some potential drawbacks of using AI for resume writing.

— Lack of Personal Touch

AI isn’t you. This is the most glaring concern that deserves more than a glance. AI won’t understand anything about your history that you don’t tell it . Also, it doesn’t necessarily understand nuances, such as industry-specific jargon. And those are factors that can make your resume grab a hiring manager’s attention and start imagining you in the role.

— Possibility of Disqualification

Sure, everywhere you look today, AI use is becoming mainstream. Having said that, it’s important that you know that using AI to generate your entire resume can be frowned upon or considered deceptive by some recruiters.

Not to mention, if AI-generated bullet points oversell your qualifications and you can’t meet expectations, you could be fired for providing misleading or false information.

— Potential Errors

Beware that AI isn’t incapable of making errors. AI tools are advancing daily, but there’s still much room for error. You might need several tools to ensure you have the right tone and grammar and are typo-free. AI outputs can contain incorrect or misleading information .

“If you directly use ChatGPT-produced text by copying and pasting into your documents or communications, you might accidentally send grammatically or factually incorrect information to someone,” Spencer cautions.

— Data Privacy and Security

Ensure you are proactive in protecting your personal information. Your resume contains sensitive data, so it’s essential to be mindful about where you input your resume and how much information you share. Many conversations are occurring about copyright and legalities around AI-generated outputs and tools .

What you input and generate might not be yours once AI gets involved. Unless definitive laws are put in place protecting your information, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI

Below are some common questions about sourcing AI tools and utilizing them to write your job application materials.

1. Can AI help me write a resume?

Yes, AI can definitely help you write a resume. AI can be your resume’s new best friend, from analyzing your career history and experiences to customizing your summary and bullet points. However, AI won’t necessarily reflect your personal brand , career goals , or interests. It’s still essential that you review and edit all AI-generated content .

2. Which AI is best for resume writing?

There isn’t a straightforward answer to which AI is best for resume writing, as different AI-powered tools and platforms excel in various aspects of the resume-writing process. To choose the best AI for your needs , consider what you’re looking to accomplish and evaluate the features offered by each tool.

There’s a lot of talk about ChatGPT, which still has a free membership option, but if you’re fully immersed in a job search, you can save a bit of time by using resume builders , like MyPerfectResume . For editing grammar, the industry standards are Grammarly and Hemingway Editor .

3. Can I use ChatGPT to rewrite my resume?

ChatGPT can act as either a writer or an editor. Learn some basic prompting to get higher-quality outputs. With its natural language processing (NLP), you might enjoy the back-and-forth conversational aspect of using that tool instead of more traditional interfaces.

“ChatGPT responses often need to be refined, meaning that you should give it follow-up prompts or ask it additional questions to get the type of information you need or want,” Spencer notes. “You need to be specific in what you are asking ChatGPT to do and you can ask additional questions to get it to revise the response it previously gave you.”

4. Is there a free AI resume writer?

While there isn’t a comprehensive free AI resume writer covering all aspects of resume writing, several AI-powered tools and platforms offer free versions or trials with limited features. ChatGPT still offers free accounts. Grammarly and Hemingway Editor also provide free versions with limited functionality.

5. What other ways can AI help me with my job search?

Outside of resume creation, AI can be a valuable assistant when writing any of your job application materials . AI can be like having a professional editor in your pocket, from your cover letter to your LinkedIn profile , follow-up emails to social media posts . You won’t get the friendly Slack or text messages that you would from a live editor, but instant feedback and idea generation are available 24/7.

You can also use ChatGPT and similar tools to brainstorm the types of jobs you might be interested in when you input your work history, passions, or career goals. There are nearly limitless ways to let AI help you expand your boundaries by asking questions that get your creative juices flowing.

AI Prompt Examples to Build Your Resume

Using AI to build your resume will take some practice. And, you should always hand review and update each time you utilize artificial intelligence. As FlexJobs’ career expert Keith Spencer states “Your interactions with ChatGPT will feel like a back-and-forth conversation, where you refine your requests or share information as you go along to help it improve the quality, accuracy, and relevance of the responses it provides.”

You should think of AI as an assistant looking to fill in gaps you may be missing. AI won’t ask you questions when they don’t understand, so you must clarify to obtain the results you need. Fortunately, getting higher-quality writing with just a few tweaks is not hard.

How to Write an AI Resume Prompt

Consider the following as a starting point to build your resume with AI:

  • Purpose : Clearly state the goal or objective of the content you want the AI to generate.
  • Format : Specify the desired format or structure. You can say “resume” but you could also try “resume header” or “resume experience section.”
  • Tone : Indicate the desired tone of your content. Play around with suggestions, like professional, conversational, casual, etc.
  • Length : Provide a guideline for the desired length of your resume. Specify either word count or section count.
  • Key points : List the main points you want the AI to cover.
  • Audience : Briefly describe your target audience for the content, like a human resources professional or hiring manager.
  • Examples : You can provide an example if you have previous resumes you’re proud of. Let the AI know you’re providing an example that shouldn’t be included in the output.
  • Include your cover letter : Provide AI with your cover letter and ask it to use the cover letter as a guide and support for the resume. For cover letter AI tips, see Using AI to Generate Your Cover Letter: Tips & Prompt Examples .

Use the Best Tools for Your Job Search

AI can be a great addition to your job-searching toolbox . Used responsibly, you can easily craft an impressive resume that helps you catch a hiring manager’s attention. While you embrace new technologies, continue to grow your professional expertise and skills to ensure you stand out from the competition.

What Is a Resume AI?

An AI resume (or artificial intelligence resume) is one you create when you want to apply for AI jobs. It can also mean an ATS-friendly resume as well as a is a resume created with AI assistance. In this article, we will discuss this last definition of an AI resume. What seemed like a sci-fi story a few years ago is now a hot topic for every person thinking about creating a resume quickly, effortlessly, and with ease.

There are many online resume builders out there, and they use algorithms to help users create their resumes. For instance, Zety resume builder generates content tailored to the user’s profile, which can later be tailored any way you like. Plus, you also get AI-generated suggestions for each section of your document.

Writing a resume doesn’t have to require AI assistance. Find out how to make a resume that stands out with our step-by-step guide: How to Make a Resume for 2024

How an AI Resume Writer Can Help You with Writing a Resume?

Let’s talk more about using different chatbots to create your resume. If you think you will be able to simply ask ChatGPT or any other artificial intelligence, “Make me a resume!” or even “Make me a resume, please!” then you’ve got another thought coming. Because those chatbots don’t know you, do they?

They don’t know your educational background, work experience, skills, or any other things you might want to include in your resume to impress the hiring manager. So…

Can a chatbot write your resume from the top?

The simple answer is: no. And also: wouldn’t that be a bit creepy? But the longer answer is: no, but they can definitely help you write a job-winning resume.

However, there are certain tasks you can distribute to AI resume builders that will make the entire process faster. But please, keep in mind that none of these tasks can go without you double-checking if everything was done 100% correctly. All of them also require some fixing on your side to make it more human-like. According to Harvard Business Review , it is necessary for us, humans, to remain in the loop and to override decisions made by AI, as it is not ready to make unsupervised decisions. And remember, we’re talking about your career here, so you certainly don’t want to handle it over to a chatbot, do you?

So, what’s it good for?

Writing Sentences with AI Resume Builder

That’s a big one for someone who is not trying to land a job with a resume for a creative writer . Sometimes you don’t know how to turn your thoughts into sentences that are 100% correct, look great, are not generic, and have a lot of synonyms and action words for a resume . And that’s how you impress the recruiter because your resume should not only contain great achievements but should also read well.

Using AI whenever you face writer’s block can work magic in your writing process. Asking a chatbot to rephrase your resume summary or to write something for you from your notes will definitely make the entire process faster than googling for synonyms.

Improving Sections on Your Resume with AI

You know the answer to the “ Can you lie on a resume? ” question. When using AI to improve sections on your resume you might face a temptation to do so. If you simply ask the chatbot to create a resume education section based on what did you graduate from, it will deliver a list of achievements, extracurricular involvement, relevant coursework, and even your honors thesis.

Quite often, it looks so impressive that you might wonder whether you have definitely used your time at the university well enough to land the job of your dreams! The same goes for your work experience section , where chatbots list your achievements based only on a company name. Not to mention asking about some relevant skills for a resume you’re working on!

But you know well that at least some of them are not quite true. And when you ask, i.e., ChatGPT to write a resume , it will tell you to tailor the given example to your specific experiences. So it can work well as an inspiration for the improvement of your resume sections , but you should always adjust it to your real experience history.

Looking for some inspiration regarding your soft and hard skills? Visit our guide: Hard Skills vs Soft Skills

Double-Checking Your Resume with AI

You can read your resume many times and still miss some minor grammatical errors or some lost commas. Your recruiter might spend only seven seconds on your resume and still catch that mistake. And if you’ve put a detail-oriented skill on your resume , you might have just proved you’re not right about that. So perhaps you’re not right about some other skills. So perhaps it’s best to move on with the resumes to the next candidate…

Sounds like a nightmare. But having a mistake in your document is a big resume don’t . An AI can help you with that by spotting and correcting any mistake you’ve made on your resume. And, unlike a human friend you might ask for help, it won’t make any mistakes checking your document! It’s like a friend that’s also a dictionary! Huzzah!

Now you know what a resume AI writing done well means. So let’s have a look at the pros and cons of using AI resume builders.

Resume AI: Pros and Cons

Bard, ChatGPT, Wonsulting Resume AI are only some of the chatbots out there, but they all have their pros and cons to consider before picking them over other online resume builders. Time to find out about both sides of choosing a resume AI writing.

AI Resume Writing: Pros

There are some big advantages of using resume AI support.

Passing the ATS

Applicant Tracking Systems are supported by artificial intelligence. The chances of passing their screening grow when choosing AI resume writing.

Saving Time and Money

Hiring a professional resume writer to help you with your resume will cost you. And what’s the benefit of an AI resume builder? Free of charge. And it’s also done way faster that way!

Keeping Consistency

With some help from AI your resume will be written in a consistent, professional style that will easily impress the hiring manager.

AI Resume Writing: Cons

Those pros are impressive. But let’s take a look at the other side of that coin.

Having a Generic Resume

When relying completely on an AI resume, there’s no place for creativity. The effect of their work is yet another generic resume . And with no human touch, you cannot impress the recruiter. You’d need to add a lot to make it as unique as possible because that’s how your resume gets remembered among other candidates’ files.

Delivering Outdated Information

Chatbots take their knowledge from the internet. What they will pull out of there might be incorrect or outdated and may require double-checking on your side. So you might reduce the number of grammatical errors but still can face some major misinformation.

Increasing Chances of Disqualification

If a recruiter finds out you’ve used a chatbot to write a resume, will they still trust you as a reliable, independent, and hard-working candidate? With AI on the rise, employers may soon start using already available algorithmic checkers to determine which candidate decided to work on a resume and which one chose to use a chatbot instead.

No Resume Templates

Even if you have your resume written by a chatbot, re-written by you to add some creativity and stand out, and proofread again to check if everything’s 100% correct… You’d still need a good resume template to get remembered and to impress the recruiter.

And since most resume builders deliver tips from professional resume writers (and not from a robot!), resume proofreading tools, pre-written sentences, ATS checkers, and modern resume templates, is it really a good idea to rely 100% on artificial intelligence?

AI Resume Writing: Verdict

Creating a resume with an AI resume builder can be helpful. There are great things that come with AI for resume writing that are helping you overcome writer’s block or check if you haven’t made any mistakes in writing a resume. However, you’d still need to work on that document to deliver a job-winning resume to your recruiter’s inbox.

Once you have your AI generated resume ready to copy it from the chat window, what’s next? You’re not gonna just paste it to the message you’ll send. To really secure the job you’re applying for, you need to do more than that.

You need a modern resume template that will boost readability, and help your resume stand out among other competitors. With tips from pro resume writers and a cover letter builder, your chances will be way higher than relying completely on AI resume writers. That’s why choosing a professional online resume builder (that’s also supported by AI algorithms!) such as Zety is always a better idea than choosing an AI resume builder.

Pro tip: Boost your chances of getting the job you’re after by creating a cover letter in a consistent, eye-catching template.

Plus, a great cover letter that matches your resume will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here.  Here's what it may look like:

There are some things you must remember when deciding on taking a helpful robotic hand and choosing AI resume writing:

  • Never rely 100% on AI to get the job you’re after. Use it to help you write parts of your resume and overcome writer’s block.
  • Always double-check what AI wrote. It might stretch the truth, and there’s no AI support when you get asked about it during an interview.
  • Having a resume written by AI is not enough to land a job. It’s true. Though you can get an AI resume free of charge and money-saving, you still need to apply some changes to your document. Even the best AI for a resume won't give you that human touch you need to impress a recruiter with how unique of a candidate you are. AI Resume Writer Frequently Asked Questions

How does an ai resume writer work.

An AI resume writer analyzes thousands of existing resumes across industries and job titles to learn how to write the perfect resume for any application. Simply input basic information such as your current job title and skills, and let our AI resume writer generate text for your resume’s summary and work experience sections.

Can my AI resume be personalized to each job I apply to?

AI resumes are the perfect option when you’re applying for many positions, because they allow you to personalize each resume quickly and efficiently. Whether you choose to personalize the content manually, or request changes from the AI itself, our AI resume builder can generate unlimited personalized resumes.

How effective are resumes generated by an AI resume writer?

Resumes generated by an AI resume writer are just as effective, if not more effective, than traditional, manually written resumes. Because our AI resume writer has analyzed so many effective resumes, it understands exactly what to say to help you stand apart from the crowd and catch a hiring manager’s attention, fast.

How long does it take to build a resume using AI?

An AI resume can take just minutes to build. Once you’ve input your information, VisualCV’s AI resume writer will generate your content in a matter of seconds. After that, it’s up to you how much or how little you’d like to change the content or add any extra sections, such as skills, to your resume.

What information should I provide an AI resume writer?

The more information you provide an AI resume writer, the better. However, VisualCV’s AI resume writer can create resume summaries and resume work experience entries using minimal information, such as your industry and level of experience. For example, telling the AI resume writer that you work in finance and your current job title is portfolio manager will lead the AI writer to create content based on previously analyzed portfolio manager resumes. This approach may require more editing on your end, but can be a great jumping off point when you’re feeling stuck. On the other hand, if you include more information about your accomplishments at your current position, the AI resume builder can give your work experience or summary sections that extra bit of polish you’re looking for.

Will my resume pass Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software?

All of VisualCV’s professionally designed resume templates have been formulated specifically to pass ATS software. Using our AI resume builder will not impact your resume’s ability to be seen by a real person in any way!

Should I use an AI resume writer, or a professional resume writer?

Whether to use AI or a professional resume writer can be a tricky decision, but, in general, our AI resume builder is a perfect jumping off point when you’re not sure how to begin writing. If your career has been especially long, you have many jobs to speak about, or your journey can be difficult or complicated to explain in a resume, you might find it easier to work with a (human) professional resume writer. However, the majority of resumes are straightforward and perfect candidates for our AI resume writer.

Can I make edits to my resume after the AI resume writer creates it?

You can always edit your resume in VisualCV’s resume builder after our AI resume writer has created it. If you aren’t happy with the content the AI resume builder provides, you can either edit the existing content or regenerate the provided content for a new suggestion.

How to use AI to write a resume: A guide to what works and what doesn’t

March 28, 2024

Man imagining collaborating with AI on resume writing

Artificial intelligence is revolutionising recruiting, presenting both risks and rewards.

This guide demonstrates how to enhance your resume with AI without becoming overly reliant on it,   aiming to make your application stand out and catch hiring managers' attention. We'll show you how to use AI to amplify your personal touch in crafting a standout resume.

According to Neil Manfred, Director of IT at Airswift, what distinguishes a tech professional’s CV is a blend of hard skills, people skills and the candidate's portfolio, Manfred explains:

Skills and certificates are great, but there is no substitute for scenarios and key accomplishments. We need to ensure we can translate requirements into business solutions. Having access developers' GitHub libraries to view their spare time projects and contributions is always valuable.

As the job market tightens, the insights and resources in this guide will help you spotlight your unique skills and experiences, offering you a competitive edge.

How to start co-creating with AI the right way

Group brainstorming with AI over creative project

To start that conversation and get the most out of the co-creation process with AI, you must follow the following steps and be aware of some specific concepts.

Before prompting, understand the role-playing technique

Understanding the role-playing technique is crucial before you begin crafting your resume. It’s a powerful strategy for mirroring the tone of voice a specific job calls for, helping you tailor your resume to align perfectly with employer expectations.

This involves emulating the language, style, and demeanour of professionals in your desired role or industry. By doing so, your application communicates in the same language as your potential employer, making a stronger impact.

Here's how to integrate role-playing into your AI-enhanced resume crafting:

Steps to using the role-playing technique with AI

  • Research and analyse:   Begin by thoroughly researching the job requirements and company culture of your target employers. Understand the professional jargon, key responsibilities, and the attributes of individuals who excel in these positions.
  • Emulate professionals:   Seek out leaders in your field or those in the role you’re applying for. Study their LinkedIn, publications, and interviews to grasp their way of communicating.
  • Craft AI prompts using the role-playing technique:   Use your research to craft AI prompts that emulate the voice, tone, and communication style of these professionals. Ask the AI to generate content as if it were one of these professionals describing it your achievements and skills.
  • Iterate and refine:   Polish the AI-generated drafts, ensuring they reflect your experiences more closely. This will help you craft a resume that’s not only aligned in content but also nails the tone and style expected by employers.

Five examples of the role-playing technique in action

Here are five streamlined examples of using the role-playing technique to craft compelling AI prompts, each tailored to specific professional personas:

  • Tech industry leader:  "Imagine you're a renowned tech entrepreneur known for innovation and disruption. Write a summary of my software engineering background, emphasising innovation and my contributions to open-source projects. Ready for my resume details?
  • Mechanical engineer: "Imagine you're an esteemed mechanical engineer known for innovative designs in renewable energy. Write about my project work, focusing on CAD modelling, prototyping and teamwork. Shall we begin with the details of my resume?"
  • Senior developer:  "Act as a senior developer recognised for leading agile, high-performing software teams.  Highlight my full-stack development skills, project leadership, and commitment to tech innovation in a single paragraph. Are you ready for my resume details to begin? "
  • Cloud architect:  " Embody a visionary cloud architect with a knack for scalable, secure cloud solutions. Describe my involvement in migrating enterprise data centers, emphasizing architectural design and cloud service selection. Ready to start with my resume input?"
  • Cybersecurity engineer:   "Pretend you're a top cybersecurity engineer with a track record of fortifying defences for critical infrastructure.   Outline my role in developing security protocols against cyber threats, highlighting threat analysis and penetration testing. Should we proceed with my resume information?"

These examples are designed to instruct AI how to mirror the communication style and professional depth across various fields whilst also highlighting your technical skills and achievements against industry standards and expectations.

Enhance your resume with these AI prompt tips

Woman consulting AI on crafting a detailed resume

Leveraging AI in your resume hinges on your ability to communicate, especially through writing.

To captivate hiring managers and recruiters, honing your self-promotion skills is key.

Remember, you're the main character, and the real test is conveying your story effectively, whether on paper, a computer screen, or within ChatGPT.

  • Show, don’t tell:   Instead of stating facts about your professional achievements, use AI to help illustrate these moments. For example, transform "Managed a team to meet company objectives" into a story about overcoming challenges, fostering teamwork, and achieving goals beyond expectations.
  • Use the active voice:   Use AI to convert passive constructions into active statements, making your resume more dynamic and engaging. For instance, "A project was completed on time" becomes "Completed the project ahead of schedule."
  • Incorporate sensory details:   Sensory details can highlight your experiences vividly. Describe the bustling environment of your successful project management or the quiet focus required during your analytical work. AI can suggest phrases and environments related to your field to make your experiences come alive.
  • Create a narrative arc:   Your resume can tell a story, with each role or project building upon the last. Use AI to help structure your career progression as a narrative arc, showing growth, challenges, and triumphs. This approach turns a list of jobs into a compelling career journey.
  • Emphasise conflict and resolution:   Highlight challenges you faced and how you overcame them, using AI to refine the storytelling. This technique showcases your problem-solving skills and determination to overcome common workplace hurdles we all may face, such as   impostor syndrome .
  • Utilise parallel structure:   For lists of skills or accomplishments, AI can ensure that each item is presented with a parallel grammatical structure, making your resume more cohesive and organised.
  • Incorporate keywords strategically:   Use AI to identify and integrate keywords from the job description into your resume. This not only passes through   Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)   but does so in a way that feels natural and engaging.

What else can your AI co-worker do for you?

Friendly robot waving, embodies unlocking AIs potential

Utilising AI in resume writing equips job seekers with the means to optimise their CVs based on job requirements, making them more noticeable to Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

These systems, filter applications by searching for specific keywords and qualifications relevant to the job posting.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) rank and categorise candidates in specific ways. Certain formats, such as CVs with columns, may not be interpreted correctly by an ATS. Additionally, resumes presented as images are unreadable by these systems.” Explains Hugo Dopheide, a Global Tech Recruiter with Airswift.

AI tools can recommend the perfect resume format, highlight necessary skills, and identify achievements that align with the demands of the job, giving the candidate a competitive edge.

Not to mention that when critiquing resumes, AI tools offer objective feedback, analysing elements such as tone, grammar, spelling, and job match. This feedback is crucial for creating a compelling resume.

The do's and don'ts of how to use AI to write a resume

A wise uncle once said, 'With great power comes great responsibility.' This is especially true when using AI to generate content, where understanding the dos and don'ts is essential to avoid pitfalls.

AI is not going back into the box; it's here to stay, prompting us to figure out how to wisely integrate it. Embracing AI innovation involves careful consideration. Manfred highlights the importance of clear communication about AI's use, treating it “as an enabler rather than a complete solution.”

He emphasises the significance of recognising bias and understanding the data used in public models versus those in a closed environment while utilising AI technologies. “Don't just jump in but look before you leap” he advises.

To grasp the consequences of misusing AI, Dopheide recalls interviewing a candidate who seemed to rely entirely on AI for responses, leading to an unnatural and chatbot-like conversation. “This reliance on AI can undermine a candidate's credibility by suggesting an inability to communicate authentically."

Here are some best practices for how to use AI to write a resume:

  • Tailor your resume:   Research your target company’s culture and incorporate industry-specific keywords.
  • Highlight achievements:   Use AI to craft bullet points that focus on accomplishments using strong action verbs.
  • Embrace design:   Employ AI-powered design tools to ensure your resume’s layout is professional and visually enticing.
  • Proofread with AI:   Run your resume through AI grammar checkers but add personal touches based on the job you’re seeking.
  • Over-rely on AI:   While AI can do the heavy lifting, infuse your resume with a vast personal touch that reflects your unique professional experience.
  • Ignore the ATS:   Applicant tracking systems parse resumes for relevant content; ensure your AI-generated resume is optimised with the right terms.
  • Use generic descriptions:   Custom prompts create richer content. Provide detailed information to the AI tool for more tailored job descriptions.
  • Neglect soft skills:   AI excels at detailing hard skills and career history, but remember to also express   soft skills   relevant to your previous roles and dream job.

Again, be wary of generic content!

Relying solely on AI to create your resume can result in it lacking individuality. Therefore, it's important to personalise AI suggestions to truly reflect who you are as a job applicant.

As Dopheide reminds us:

AI may detail software and skills from past roles, but be cautious - it can make your resume sound generic and impersonal. Watch out for overly standard content that seems unnatural. If you've been a data analyst for 15 years at different companies, your experiences should demonstrate both similarities and differences. However, AI-generated content often lacks variation between roles.
  • Embrace co-creative tools:   Tools that offer co-creative features, where AI and human input merge, can provide a balanced approach to resume writing. This ensures the output is both optimised for applicant tracking systems and appealing to human recruiters.
  • Seek tools that offer contextual advice:   Look for AI tools that go beyond basic spell check or grammar suggestions and can offer contextual advice on content, such as suggesting missing skills or highlighting overused phrases.
  • Avoid tools that lack transparency:   Be wary of tools that do not explain how they generate suggestions or those that do not allow for customisation beyond AI recommendations. Transparency in how AI decisions are made is crucial for trust and effectiveness.
  • Continuously update your resume:   In an AI-driven world, staying updated with the latest trends and technologies is essential. Regularly review and update your resume to ensure it reflects the current best practices in resume writing and presentation.

The integration of AI in resume writing powers up the future for job seekers. However, the human element remains irreplaceable, emphasising the importance of using AI as a tool for enhancement rather than a complete substitute for the human touch in resume development.

Using AI to Craft the Perfect Resume

by Nathan Eddy Apr 1, 2024 12 min read

One of the benefits to modern A.I. is how it can handle human language, including reading, writing, processing, and even improving written text. The science behind this is incredibly complex, and thankfully we don’t need to understand it to use it. And we can make use of it in many ways, including writing resumes.

Can I use A.I. to write my resume?

A.I. tools such as ChatGPT can be a big help in writing and improving your resume. But the key is to realize the shortcomings of A.I.: these tools are not humans, and they base their understanding of language on what they’ve read. They make complex word connections, which allows them to understand the text we provide; and through such word connections they can write sentences and paragraphs that sound like they were written by a human–mostly.

But spend some time with such tools and it won’t take long before you start to see common themes to their wordings and phrasings. In other words, ChatGPT and other A.I. tools have their own voice, just as most humans do.

In terms of resume writing, that means you will want to use AI tools to assist you in creating your resume, rather than write the whole thing. Yes, you could probably feed your experience into ChatGPT as a prompt and say, “Give me a resume!” And you’ll get one. But it will likely be imperfect.

For example, I asked ChatGPT to provide me with an item for a resume. I supplied the following prompt:

"Provide me with an eye-catching item for my resume to describe the following experience. I want this to stand out ahead of all the other resumes the recruiter is reading. Here is my experience for one job: I worked from January 2018 to June 2021. I led a team of six programmers in a project using C# for the backend and Angular for the front end. We used agile practices. The app we created included a MongoDB database, and I want to really bring this part out in my resume. We completed the first version in 6 months. Users were happy with it. We worked closely with someone who did the devops stuff, including CI/CD, to put a new release in the cloud every two weeks. Over the next year, we sold enough subscriptions that the app raised 2.3 million dollars."

Sure enough, ChatGPT delivered:

"Led High-Impact Development Team to $2.3 Million Success: Spearheaded a Dynamic Team of Six Programmers in Crafting a Cutting-Edge Application Utilizing C# and Angular, Enhanced with MongoDB Integration. Applied Agile Methodologies to Achieve Rapid Deployment, Delivering Initial Version in Just 6 Months. Collaborated with DevOps Expertise for Seamless CI/CD Pipeline, Ensuring Bi-Weekly Cloud Releases. Resulted in Exceeding Subscription Sales Targets, Garnering $2.3 Million in Funding Within a Year."

Although this might seem like a great read at first, it has several problems. Most importantly, job recruiters and interviewers (which is part of my current job) grow weary and tired of resumes that use extremely boastful language. I interview people for their technical skills. And I don’t care if the app you built was “cutting edge” and frankly, I don’t actually care how much money the application generated, because usually the application was the idea of somebody in management or marketing. The developers built what they were told to build.

When I’m reading a resume, I want to know about your technical skills and how good you are at catching bugs or building database schemas and how well you work in an Agile environment. If the app generated millions or was a financial bust, that’s on management. Even if it was a financial failure, you could have done an awesome job developing it, and that’s what I want to know about.

Also, before we try again, notice there’s a slight error. My intention was to say that the application’s sales were 2.3 million dollars in gross revenue. But I mistakenly used the word “raised” and ChatGPT thought that meant it was such a good app, the company used it to raise $2.3 million in venture funding. So you have to read what ChatGPT creates very carefully.

Now let’s push aside the “eye-catching” part and try again. I’ll ask ChatGPT to rewrite it with this prompt:

“Instead of making it eye catching, please rewrite it so that it sticks to the points that a technically-minded manager will appreciate. The manager wants to know about my technical abilities, not how much money it made, for example. Please rewrite it accordingly.”

Here’s what ChatGPT gave me:

“Technical Leadership in Full Stack Development: Directed a Team of Six Programmers in a Project Utilizing C# Backend and Angular Frontend Technologies, Enhanced with MongoDB Integration. Employed Agile Methodologies to Achieve Efficient Development Cycle, Delivering Initial Version in 6 Months. Collaborated with DevOps Specialist for Seamless CI/CD Pipeline Implementation, Ensuring Bi-Weekly Cloud Releases.”

Much better! The only thing I would change is to replace “utilize” with “use” as it’s a simpler term. Otherwise this is pretty good.

An A.I. Resume Template

One great thing about ChatGPT and similar A.I. tools is you can feed it information in multiple steps. That means you can start with a template of sorts. If you were to just ask ChatGPT to build you a resume, it wouldn’t really know what you want first, second, and so on. And instead it will just take its best guess.

So instead of letting ChatGPT decide for you, tell it what you want in terms of format. But what’s interesting here is that while you could describe in detail the order of items on the resume, ChatGPT is actually familiar with different types. I asked it: “What are some popular resume formats today?” and it listed several, including a few obscure ones I’m not familiar with. The first one it mentioned was “Chronological resume.” I asked it for an example, and here’s what it provided:

[Your Name]

[Your Contact Information]

Summary:

Motivated and results-driven professional with [number of years] years of experience in [industry/field]. Proven track record of success in [highlight relevant achievements or skills]. Strong [specific skills or attributes].

Experience:

[Job Title]

[Company Name], [Location]

[Month Year] - Present

Description of responsibilities and achievements in this role.

[Month Year] - [Month Year]

Education:

[Degree], [Major], [University Name], [Graduation Year]

[Any relevant certifications or additional training]

Skills:

[List relevant skills, such as technical skills, software proficiency, languages, etc.]

References:

Available upon request.

This is probably the most common format today (and has been for a long time). Yes, you’ll see resumes that have a beautiful graphical layout and definitely catch the eye, but ultimately the best ones still list the experience and provide the hiring manager with exactly what they’re looking for.

The only thing you might want to change with this format is to move the Skills section up above the experience, especially for technical positions. (You can do that manually after ChatGPT builds the first draft. Copy it into your word processor and rearrange the parts.) As a hiring manager myself, I want a quick summary before all the experience. I want to see if you know MongoDB or if you’re an expert in Python without having to read through all the experience. But remember! ChatGPT is your assistant. It will build a first draft resume that you can then take and rearrange and clean up.

Tips and Tricks for Using A.I. to Write a Resume

So how do you use A.I. to write a resume? The key is to type in the experience items, with the appropriate dates, title, and company name. Then roughly describe what you did on that job. Use as many technology keywords as you can. (Some larger companies use A.I. and other tools themselves to filter out resumes missing required technologies based on words in the resume.) Then ask ChatGPT to write you a resume with all of this. Ask it to write the summary section based on what you’ve provided in the experience.

And don’t be afraid to ask ChatGPT to redo the whole thing from scratch, or to rewrite a certain part of it. (For example, you might type, “Can you rewrite the job from 2018 to 2020 but put more emphasis on agile?”) Remember, even though it really does feel like you’re talking to another human, you aren’t, and you won’t hurt its feelings!

Also, understand that ChatGPT sees a chat session as a single entity that it continues to learn on. It remembers everything you wrote for that session. So you can ask it to rewrite a certain section and it will know what you’re talking about. But if you were previously asking ChatGPT about the meaning of some song lyrics, and then in the same session ask it to build you a resume, you might find lyrics from that song working their way into the resume. Probably not a good thing. So the first tip is to start a new session when you’re ready to ask it for help with your resume.

The next tip: ChatGPT is far from perfect! Read and reread whatever it gives you. Don’t automatically accept it as perfect. If you find something wrong, fix it manually.

Also: Save everything into a word processing document: Everything you typed in as a prompt, everything it provided. Just in case you need to redo everything.

Finally: Practice! Writing good prompts is a skill in itself.

Prompts You Can Use

While coming up with great prompts is a skill, here are few ideas to get you going. I’ve put the prompts in italics, and then some comments after each.

What are some popular resume formats today?

You might want to see other options besides chronological. And ChatGPT knows about several.

Can you give me a short example of a chronological resume using a sample, made-up person with a few years of experience?

But you can substitute the word “chronological” with one of the other types it provides you with.

How far back should I go with experience on my resume for a software developer position? What items should I leave off if I’m applying for a React front-end position?

Don’t be afraid to ask it questions like these! Although it’s not a person, it has amassed a serious amount of information from many, many sources, and it might provide a good suggestions. But remember: You don’t have to listen to it.

ChatGPT and similar such tools can really help with your resume building. But be wary of it; it’s far from perfect. Treat it as your assistant, not your boss. Go through what it gave you, and see if you like it. If not, ask it for a revision. (Such as how I asked it to rewrite the item to be less flowery in language.) And remember to practice!

Can AI Write Your Resume?

Let’s get the obvious question out of the way—yes, the AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Bard, Bing’s chatbot “Sydney,” and many others can write resumes. How they do it is as follows.

AI chatbots work by using language and information databases, pattern matching, deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and more IT magic. In turn, they gain the ability to write near-human-like answers to questions, complete given tasks, and engage in conversations. So, when we ask AI, “ How to write a resume? ” it’ll give us an answer based on its own knowledge database and write it down algorithmically. That’s the extremely simplified version of it.

But most of us don’t need a detailed explanation. We need the results. So what would the answer be? How does one write a resume? Well, it’ll tell us to choose the right resume format , add a header, write your resume profile , and so on. All the things that make a good resume.

What if we asked to write a resume from scratch?

How to Use AI to Help With Resume Writing?

AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard, and others can help you with your resume in the following areas:

Creating a Resume Profile

Writing a resume summary or resume objective is often the most troubling part of the resume writing process. And because it’s so tricky to write it, especially since it’s the first thing on your resume yet best to tackle last, you might want to use AI to help you. You can do that by either:

  • Asking the AI chatbot to write you a sample of the resume profile and edit it to suit you
  • Inputting your resume into the chatbot and asking it to write the profile from your data

The result? The AI-generated resume profile made using the first method can be a total miss and need a rewrite. The second one is much more reliable but requires all resume sections to be carefully and strategically prepared.

Improving Your Work Experience Section

Writing this part of your resume with AI can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can compile a lot of professional achievements to choose from. On the other, it’s easy to fall into the trap of lying on your resume by including achievements that aren’t yours.

When using AI to help with your work experience section , you have to curate a list of potential achievements you want to and can add.

Remember to input factual information when quantifying your wins, only add stuff you’ve actually done, and remember to keep all details relevant.

Skills List Inspiration

You’ll always hear us say not to copy skill lists from the internet. This is no exception. The AI doesn’t know what you’re skilled at. Only you do. But it can provide a list of potential skills you might want to include in your resume’s skills section .

Whether you’re looking for managerial skills or IT skills , remember to do one thing before writing down this section. Read the job ad carefully and locate resume keywords . The ad itself will tell you which skills are the most sought-after by the company.

Proofreading and Correcting Mistakes

It isn’t uncommon to use various language tools to proofread your resume. After all, you don’t want your application rejected because instead of “revenue,” you contributed to “revenge.” However, some common tools like Grammarly won’t pick up on that. That’s because revenge is a valid word. But if you let an AI proofread your resume, it‘ll likely notice something wrong and correct your job-costing blunder.

And yes, spelling and typographical errors do have a negative impact on recruiters .

Generating an AI Resume from a LinkedIn Profile

This is quite possibly the most impressive thing. Some specialized software and extensions allow chatbots to scan your LinkedIn profile and use the details there to create a complete resume. The result, of course, depends on the quality of your LinkedIn profile. If you’ve used LinkedIn like a pro , editing will be much easier than when you only have basic information.

In Which Areas Do AI Resumes Fall Flat?

But not all is rainbows and unicorns in the AI resume land. So let’s talk about that.

Writing the Education Section

The education section is often regarded as unimportant or just overlooked. But it couldn’t be farther from the truth for so many job-seekers. If you’re making a resume with no experience , what else are you going to show?

Unfortunately, the AI doesn’t know where and when you’ve been to college, your major, your GPA, which clubs you joined, etc. So, you’ll have to make the education section on your resume without AI.

Including Extra Resume Sections

In all our resume guides, you’ll learn that additional resume sections can improve your application exponentially. By additional, we mean the following:

  • Foreign languages
  • Memberships
  • Certifications & licenses
  • Courses & training
  • Volunteer work
  • Hobbies & interests
  • Conferences
  • Extracurriculars

The problem is, again, AI doesn’t know you. It can’t tell you what certificates you completed or whether you volunteered at the local animal shelter. Also, the AI algorithms will often randomly create certificate names, courses, and conferences, out of thin air.

Creating a Resume Template

Even if you create the perfect resume with ChatGPT, there is something your chatbot won’t do. And that’s put the information into a cohesive, visually pleasing resume template . It’ll write everything down, creating a standard resume layout , but that’s it. Now ask yourself: if you were a recruiter, would you accept a block of text printed out on a blank A4 sheet?

AI-Generated Resumes: What Are the Benefits?

Now that you know the resume AI writing process, let’s pass a verdict on AI resumes. First, let’s talk about the good sides of resume AI writing:

Saving Time

Resume AI writing is super quick. All you need to do is input a couple of sentences, and in just a few seconds, they turn into a fully-fledged resume. This can be especially helpful if you need to create multiple resumes for different job applications.

Easy Personalization

Speaking of making resumes for multiple applications. Targeting a resume is one of the most crucial things that help you get a job offer. AI can analyze job descriptions and mark the keywords to tailor your resume's content to match the specific requirements of a job.

Language and Grammar Assistance

AI-powered tools assist with language and grammar checks. They help identify and correct errors, awkward phrasing, or unclear sentences. And an error-free resume is a happy resume.

Overcoming Writer’s Block

It’s a universal problem. You may often find yourself with a bad case of writer's block. And unfortunately, staring at a blank document and a blinking cursor doesn’t help. Resume AI writing can provide a starting point or suggestions that can help overcome writer's block and guide the resume writing process.

Learning From Data and Trends

By leveraging AI-generated resumes, you can benefit from insights on what works well and adapt your own resume accordingly. And in the case of new and emerging trends, AI chatbots with access to a search function (Bard, Bing, etc.) can immediately recognize and implement them.

Do AI-Generated Resumes Have Any Disadvantages?

We told you the “good,” and now, let’s discuss the “bad” of resume AI writing:

A Lack of Human Touch

AI resumes lack the personal touch and human element that can make a resume stand out. They may not capture the nuances, individuality, and storytelling aspects you bring to your resume. This could result in a generic resume or an impersonal representation of your skills and experiences.

Limited Creativity

AI algorithms operate based on predefined patterns and data. They are only really capable of creating general resumes that are formulaic and lacking originality. As a recruiter, when you’re browsing through hundreds of applications, you’ll quickly be able to recognize which resumes are poor copy-paste made by an AI.

Difficulty in Representing Complex Experiences

AI resume writing struggles with an accurate representation of complex career paths and experiences. If you find yourself in need of creating a functional resume to hide your gaps in employment , AI may not fully capture the breadth and depth of your skills. This will result in a subpar application that ultimately won’t help you get the job.

Overemphasis on Keyword Optimization

While AI-generated resumes can help optimize your resume for specific job requirements, there is a risk of overemphasizing keyword optimization. Focusing solely on incorporating keywords can result in a resume that lacks depth and fails to communicate your true value beyond meeting the immediate job criteria. In other words, you may create a perfectly valid ATS-friendly resume that will fail the moment it gets picked up by a human recruiter.

Potential Misrepresentations

AI chatbots are trained on the largest database there is—the internet. But, as great as the Internet is, it’s also full of inaccuracies. Mistakes can occur in the generation process, leading to misleading information on the resume. It's crucial to always thoroughly review and validate the content generated by AI.

Reliance on Technology

Relying too heavily on AI-generated resumes can reduce your own ability to develop and refine essential resume-writing skills. And it’s not just about resume writing. The ability to express yourself in written words is a very important skill to have.

Should You Use AI to Write Your Resume?

The answer as to whether you should use AI to write your resume isn’t only negative. AI chatbots are a great tool, and when used properly can benefit your resume-writing process. You can improve your resume by employing keywords, inspiring yourself with generated skills and achievements, and checking your resume for errors.

But you do need to watch out for pitfalls when writing your ChatGPT resume . Don’t lie on the resume, don’t include factually false information, or apply with generic, bottom-of-the-barrel resumes. To top it all off, writing a cover letter , which requires way more personalization than a resume, is even tougher for the AI to create convincingly.

What Alternatives Are There to AI-Generated Resumes?

Resume builders have existed for years and are tried-and-tested methods for creating engaging, visually pleasing, and effective resumes. Unlike AI resumes, with resume builders, you get an expert-made template and are guided through every step of the creation process to make it much simpler and faster than writing a resume from scratch.

The most important things to remember about AI resume writing are:

  • Use the AI as a tool, not a replacement. A GPT resume will not be as effective as an application you personalized yourself.
  • Balance automation with your creativity. Inject your own creativity, personal brand, and unique experiences into the content generated by AI to create a truly compelling and memorable resume.
  • Keep it concise and relevant. AI-generated resumes may generate extensive content, but remember that employers value concise and relevant information. Trim down and prioritize the most important details. The best resume length is one page, after all.
  • Customize for each application. Avoid the temptation to send out the same AI-generated resume for every job application. Tailor your resume to each specific job.
  • Validate and proofread. While AI algorithms are designed to assist with language and grammar, they are not infallible. Always thoroughly review and proofread your AI-generated resume.

How to Use ChatGPT to Write Your Resume

Struggling to create a perfect resume? Find out how ChatGPT can help you write it and land your dream job.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT helps you cut out manual work and summarize your resume.
  • Use ChatGPT to generate outlines and flesh out important sections that will impress potential employers.
  • ChatGPT Premium subscribers can use custom GPTs to analyze existing information and get more refined answers.

Standing out with your resume can be a huge challenge, but ChatGPT is a great tool to generate ideas and automate some of your editing. Learn how to write a high-quality resume with ChatGPT and how to fix common errors.

How to Write Your Resume With ChatGPT From Scratch

When writing your resume with ChatGPT, you can choose to either write everything from scratch or use a plugin. If you don't have a premium subscription, you're limited to using ChatGPT without custom GPTs. Let's start by looking at how to use the free version.

How to Draft a Resume Outline With ChatGPT

Contrary to popular belief, writing a resume in ChatGPT isn't as simple as a one-and-done prompt. You need to build on the information you add over time. Before adding customized information, it's worth asking the AI tool for a simple outline. To do this, I asked ChatGPT:

"Can you please help me write a resume? I want to land a job as a photographer at an agency."

It's also worth asking ChatGPT to keep everything to one page if that's your preference. ChatGPT provides a simple outline, including suggestions to add contact information, related skills, and a statement or summary.

ChatGPT also suggested that we add references, related educational and professional history, and links to our portfolio.

With these basics, you can spend some time thinking about how you want to customize your resume. Before you move on to the next section, consider learning about the most common ChatGPT prompting mistakes to avoid .

How to Write Your Professional Experience and Resume Summary With ChatGPT

With an overall outline of your resume, you can start filling it out step-by-step. Based on our testing, it’s best to start with your professional experience. This will make it much easier for ChatGPT to generate the rest of your resume appropriately. I gave ChatGPT this prompt:

"For Professional Experience: I have run my own Instagram page for six years about landscape photography. I have grown it to 25,000 followers and achieved 300% year-on-year growth this year. I also have my own blog which has 100,000 monthly readers about travel in the US, for which I have taken all of the pictures. As a freelancer, I have a retainer with my local newspaper and have also worked with agencies. For one agency project, my images helped contribute to a campaign generating $10 million in revenue. Can you please add this to the Professional Experience section and re-generate the draft?"

ChatGPT then fleshed out my Professional Experience section based on this information. You can ask to have your start and (if applicable) end dates added, but you can also add these manually if you'd prefer. Here's what ChatGPT gave me:

Rather helpfully, ChatGPT also adjusted my Objective Statement with the information provided:

The initial summary was quite long, so I asked ChatGPT to shorten it to 150 characters. But since that wasn't very informative, I upped the parameters to three sentences and 280 characters. The result was much better:

Besides avoiding common errors within ChatGPT, you should avoid easy-to-overlook resume mistakes when looking for a new job. Examples include putting education above experience and not customizing your resume for each application. You may also want to learn how to create a resume in Canva if you're interested in eye-catching designs.

How to Use ChatGPT to Outline Skills in Your Resume

Ultimately, your employer will want your skills to match their job opening. Make sure you showcase them in the best way possible when writing your resume with ChatGPT. I gave quite a detailed prompt here:

"Perfect. Now, let's outline my skills. I'm advanced in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, with knowledge of color grading, editing exposure, and using histograms and layers. I also have an Adobe CC All Apps subscription. Furthermore, I've taken over 200,000 photos in various conditions, including golden hour and at night—along with during the winter and summer. Soft skills include time management (I use Google Calendar to block out my entire day) and being excellent at communicating with other people. My visual storytelling skills are evident in my 1,000+ blog posts that clearly highlight the full story of each journey I take. I also know how to use Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and Canon mirrorless cameras."

ChatGPT then gave me a relatively detailed summary of the skills I asked it to showcase:

I felt like these needed some more information, so I then asked ChatGPT:

"I think we need to add a bit more. Let's also talk about my creative skills, and move Visual Storytelling into that section. I know all about the exposure triangle and experimenting with different forms of lighting, along with using aperture priority, manual, and shutter priority modes."

The edited section was much better and outlined the creative skills I wanted to showcase in further detail (along with putting these in a separate area).

ChatGPT also included the soft skills section that was in the first draft:

Once you've got the information you need, you can add these to your resume and tweak them further if you feel like doing so is necessary. Either way, it's important to proofread everything and make sure your resume is accurate before you send it to potential employers.

How to Add Your Educational History to Your Resume With ChatGPT

While employers care more about your work and project experience than your education, the skills you pick up while studying are still worth adding. To start, I gave ChatGPT this prompt:

"Great, let's now move on to educational experience. I studied journalism at university, during which I did several multimedia programs and an optional photojournalism module. I learned how to tell stories through pictures and what captivates audiences, along with the best photographic practices and how to maintain integrity. At university, I also freelanced for companies in the local area and founded my own media team for the university's basketball team."

ChatGPT gave me the following after I asked it to also include course dates and locations, which was pretty good:

If you're specifically going for a job in the tech space, consider checking out the best resume templates for tech professionals .

How to Write a Resume With ChatGPT Using a Custom GPT

If you use ChatGPT premium, you can create a resume using a custom GPT. The prompts from the previous sections should also work when using a custom GPT. However, if you already have a resume, you can upload it to get feedback and improve from there. Here's how to do so:

  • Upload a PDF version of your resume.

ChatGPT can help you customize your resume and save hours of time that you'd otherwise spend thinking about what to add. Use the tool to make your writing more concise and summarize the most important parts of your work-related experience. You can also analyze existing resumes if you already have an existing framework. Make sure that you proofread and customize everything to your own needs before you start applying for jobs.

If you think there’s a specific job you want to go for, but you’re not sure you meet all the requirements, you can bring that question to an AI platform.

You can also provide your work history to an AI platform and ask it to identify skills you likely possess.

Salary questions? Ask an AI what the average for the role is in your area. Just be aware that many AI models are limited in how up-to-date their information is. Bing AI, which is connected to the internet, might be your best option.

AI excels at generating content through the prompts you provide and can be a great tool to get over feeling stumped.

It can be as simple as entering “Write a cover letter for an IT director” and seeing what the algorithm comes up with.

As with your resume, AI makes mistakes and shouldn't be writing your cover letter for you to use unedited. Make sure it sounds like you and not a robot.

Job interviews are the most intimidating part of the process. It’s always been that way and probably won’t ever change.

Your prompt can be, “What questions would an interviewer ask for a marketing director role?” The AI will then produce a list of possible questions. It’s great for preparing.

Still, be cautious when using AI. When you sign up for ChatGPT, for instance, you'll receive this warning: “While we have safeguards in place, the system may occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information and produce offensive or biased content. It is not intended to give advice.”

So be sure to keep the human element at the forefront of your efforts. Artificial intelligence may be progressing in leaps and bounds, but it can’t replace you.
