Master's Student: The program is highly practical. The professors explain concepts in class and give us home works to submit on each topic discussed on a weekly basis. This enables us to grasp the concepts more. We are informed of the professors office time and so we can email them to make inquiries and get assistance when needed. We make presentations during class which train us to become more bold and be able to communicate the concepts easily. We are able to discuss and critic writings independently. We work on projects in groups of about 3-4 and discuss findings to the entire class and professor. We review research papers and make meta-analyses inform of class projects. The program is well structured and i am gaining skills. My worst experience is having to worry about Tuition and other related school bills. ... Read 2 reviews

Alum: Aside from being really cold, UW-Madison is a great school. Needless to say, it is one of the top schools in the U.S. with a beautiful campus that has Lake Mendota and a lot of student life to enjoy. Academic was really good too, but given how the city is college town, you can feel the emptiness when students go back home during summer break. It is known as party school too with Mifflin Street Block Party. But it is also highly academically renowned school. So you can make your campus life as fun or as beneficial as you can. There are many gyms and libraries that can handle 40k + students. In addition, you have to check out Camp Randall, the football stadium and attend The MadHatters A Cappella show. I really miss this campus except for the weather. State street has many diverse restaurants that are authentic and delicious. One of the best campuses in the world. ... Read 9 reviews

The faculty comprises experts in various fields, including finance, economics, international business, entrepreneurship, and marketing, creating a well-rounded educational experience. Limited Scholarships: A primary concern is the relatively limited number of scholarships and grants offered by Brandeis IBS. They provide a different perspective of hearing loss while educating the students in an exceptional manner with clinical and classroom studies. Economic Analysis & Policy

Our doctoral program in the field of economic analysis and policy prepares students for research careers in economics. The program offers rigorous training and has several distinct advantages:

Low Student-to-Faculty Ratio

First, enrollment in the program is small. This encourages close faculty-student contact and allows students to become involved in research very early. Students work first as assistants on faculty research projects and, as their interests and skills develop, on their own research. Students often begin their publishing careers before completing their degrees.

Flexible and Innovative Program

Second, the program is flexible and innovative; students can draw on both the school’s and the university’s distinguished faculty. In addition to the faculty in the economics group at Stanford GSB and in the university’s economics department, students have access to faculty in political and behavioral sciences; accounting and finance; mathematics, statistics, and computer science; and many other disciplines.

A Top-Ranked School

Third, the program is part of a top-ranked professional school. This setting allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the actual processes of business decision-making and public policy formulation.

Preparation and Qualifications

Students who enroll in this program have a substantial background in economics and mathematics. They are expected to have, minimally, mathematical skills at the level of one year of advanced calculus and one course each in linear algebra, analysis, probability, optimization, and statistics.

The faculty selects students based on predicted performance in the program. Evidence of substantial background or ability in the use of mathematical reasoning and statistical methods is important. Most successful applicants had quantitative undergraduate majors in economics, mathematics, or related sciences.

In addition to evidence of ability and letters of recommendation, the faculty considers carefully the applicant’s statement of purpose for pursuing the PhD degree. The successful applicant usually has clearly defined career goals that are compatible with those of the program.

Acceptance into the program is extremely competitive. Admitted applicants compare very favorably with students enrolled in the top economics departments of major universities.

Graduate Program

Ph.d. studies at princeton economics.

The Ph.D. program at Princeton Economics is one of the premier economics programs in the world. The small number of students admitted each year receive training in an exceptional research environment, supported by faculty members who are working at the forefront of research in their fields.

Admission to the program is extremely selective. Each year, the department receives approximately 800 applications for a class of 20 to 25 students. Students come from diverse backgrounds and from dozens of countries around the globe.

Princeton provides all admitted Ph.D. students tuition and fellowship support for the academic year. Admitted students also receive fellowship support through the summer months so they can continue their study and research when classes are not in session.

The Economics Department at Princeton does not offer a Master’s Degree. Students looking for information about the Master in Finance can learn more on the Princeton Bendheim Center for Finance website .

Our Program

Yale's economics faculty embraces a broad range of research and teaching interests. Courses and seminars span a wide spectrum of economics, from dynamic structural models to field experiments. Our students apply econometric and data analytic methods to a variety of subjects in macroeconomics, labor economics and finance. Our courses examine critical economic policy issues, including antitrust and environmental regulation. Our focus is global, spanning the United States and developed economies to the developing nations of Latin America, Asia and Africa. Whatever your interest, our faculty is ready to guide you through a wide offering of more than a hundred regular courses, seminars or workshops, combined with individually tailored reading and research courses to best prepare you for your Ph.D. research and dissertation.

Our faculty is eclectic in methodologies and views of economics. There is no Yale dogma or school. You will acquire a critical perspective on the full range of approaches to macroeconomics. You will be well trained in neoclassical theory and in the theory of public choice, externalities and market failures. You will master the skills of sophisticated modern econometrics and understand pitfalls in its applications. You will gain respect for the power of contemporary mathematical models and also for history and for the insights of the great economists of the past.

Columbia | Economics

Ph.D. in Economics

The Ph.D. program in the Department of Economics at Columbia University trains students to do cutting edge research in economics.  Students in our program do research in all major areas of economics including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, international economics, labor economics, public finance, industrial organization, development economics, and urban economics.  Our department provides strong training both in theoretical economics and in applied and empirical economics.  The Ph.D. program is primarily designed for students that are interested in pursuing a career in teaching and research within academia but is also useful for student interested in certain positions within governments, research organizations, or private businesses.

The first two years of our Ph.D. program is largely devoted to rigorous coursework. After the second year, however, students devote most of their time to their own research under the supervision of faculty advisors. Students in our program generally complete their Ph.D. in 5 or 6 years.

Admission to the Ph.D. program is highly selective.  We receive approximately 1,000 applications each year for an incoming class of roughly 25 students.  We place a high value on attracting the very best minds, and recruiting members of groups who will both enhance the diversity of research in the field and contribute to the diversity of the university’s academic and professional community.

The Ph.D. program has a long and illustrious history.  Alumni of the program include some of the most distinguished economists of the last century – including Nobel Prize winners Kenneth J. Arrow, Milton Friedman, Simon Smith Kuznets, and William S. Vickrey.

Ph.D. in Economics

The Ph.D. program at Berkeley is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced study and conducting original research in Economics. The Ph.D. degree is awarded in recognition of the recipient's qualifications as a general economist and of the ability to make scholarly contributions in fields of specialization.

In advancing to the Ph.D. degree, students pass through two major stages:

  • Preparation for candidacy typically takes two to three years. During the first two semesters, students take courses to achieve competence in econometric methods, methods of economic history and fundamentals of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory. During the next two years, students prepare for examination in two fields of specialization of their choosing, prepare a dissertation prospectus, and take an oral examination. When these steps are completed, students are advanced to candidacy.
  • Completion of a dissertation after advancing to candidacy typically takes one to two years. The dissertation must be based on original research and represent a significant contribution to the body of Economic knowledge.

The entire process takes approximately five to six years, although some students are able to complete the program in less time. Below is an overview of the program requirements by year and other pertinent information.

The UC Berkeley College of Letters & Science   provides students helpful resources, links, and tools for successfully completing the Ph.D. in Economics.

Doctor of Economic Development (DED)

The Doctor of Economic Development (DED) is a professional doctorate offered jointly by the Department of Economics, Applied Statistics & International Business in the College of Business and the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business (AEAB) in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

This doctoral degree program is primarily intended to provide advanced training for economic development professionals rather than academic economists. In a sense, the Doctor of Economic Development can be seen as the link between academic research in economic development and "real world" economic development problems.

Stony Brook Ranks Among 50 Best Graduate Programs for Entrepreneurs

Today, nearly 39 percent of Americans report having a side job, including 43 percent of full-time workers. According to a recent   Forbes   article, more than half of America’s “side hustlers” will become full-time business owners in 2024, driven by a changing economic and workforce climate. As more young professionals consider full-time entrepreneurship, it’s essential to understand the challenges that lie ahead.

Stony Brook has long been a champion of the entrepreneurial spirit.   Princeton Review/Entrepreneur   magazine recently recognized Stony Brook in its rankings for the   Top 50 Best Graduate Programs for Entrepreneurs in 2024.

“This ranking symbolizes the quality and resources present in Stony Brook’s entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Richard Chan, associate professor of management in the  College of Business . “It emphasizes our steadfast commitment to fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and skills and underscores the university’s crucial role in shaping the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

For more than 20 years, the College of Business has offered graduate courses in entrepreneurship that are unique due to their interdisciplinary nature and experiential learning approach, mentorship experiences, and competitions. MBAs and other graduate students find support and opportunities in the   Small Business Development Center, Center for Entrepreneurial Finance and   Innovation Center. Students have also heard firsthand from successful entrepreneurs such as Rob Basso, Marc Lore, Dawn Zier and Richard Gelfond.

Chan said the   Strategy and Entrepreneurship program   focuses on research, education and service. “In terms of research, we have specialized knowledge areas in entrepreneurial finance,” said Chan. “In fact, that’s our focus.”

It’s also a main reason he decided to start the   Center of Entrepreneurial Finance   — a joint effort with professor of finance Danling Jiang, professor emeritus Gerrit Wolf and other faculty — which focuses on how entrepreneurs acquire, transfer and manage financial resources.

“Our faculty leads students on either a research or industry-related project,” Chan said. “The student brings their own topic of interest and we match them to appropriate faculty members [who work] with students to publish papers, collect data, and with research activities. We also work with students who help external stakeholders solve their business problems.”

Chan said research focuses on how to approach innovation, development and commercialization.

“For example, last year we collaborated with Stony Brook’s   GENESIS Center, which focuses on the discovery of functional materials,” he said. “They were interested in boosting their ecosystem, so we collaborated to develop a workshop for their researchers and graduate students.”

The program, called   Tech Originator Practicum, is a three-day workshop for graduate students and postdoc researchers interested in learning about entrepreneurship. In 2024, Chan plans to expand through a collaboration with SoMAS that focuses on sustainability entrepreneurship.

“Scientists in the renewable energy arena will be able to better understand how the innovation commercialization process unfolds,” he said. “In addition, we have an MBA consulting project, a program that’s affiliated with our core classes. Then we’ll organize a team of MBA students to help business owners and other innovators figure out how they can best approach the innovation and commercialization process.”

Edward Fabian ‘08, an adjunct lecturer in the College of Business, is an alumnus of one of the program’s first MBA graduating classes.

“I first got involved with Stony Brook and their entrepreneurship and innovation programs as a student in 2007, so for me it’s been more than fifteen years of watching the curriculum and department grow,” he said. “Being named a Top 50 program really illustrates the dedication and brilliance of all the faculty and staff who are involved.”

Fabian is also president of American Eagle Systems, a Long Island-based audit compliance and data security company. He said his goal is to encourage students to be innovative thinkers.

“We live in a time where anyone can be an entrepreneur, as is evident by the millions of people who are finding success through technology and social media every day,” he said. “This generation spends hours a day marketing themselves and it’s important to think about how to innovate and take advantage of that.”

Chan said that the program has helped 28 businesses address market challenges in the past two years.

“This program not only allows students gain practical industry experience on how they can apply their knowledge to solve actual problems, it also allows companies to leverage the expertise of our budding entrepreneurs to help them find solutions to their own business challenges,” he said.

Alumnus Jawad Khalfan ’18, ’21 is co-founder and CEO of SecureTech Systems, which designs and implements electronic security systems for commercial buildings. “I gained a lot of inspiration and confidence from hearing my professors’ lessons and stories,” he said. “They brought in speakers who shared their own experiences of times when starting a business was very difficult and the odds were against them. These are people that were willing to question the status quo and do something differently and that’s not an easy path.”

Khalfan started the company after getting furloughed from his job early in the pandemic. “My partner also started to feel that his job wasn’t secure and we didn’t want to be in a place where we felt our jobs and lives were always going to be in jeopardy,” he said. “When I realized that someone can just eliminate my job, that became a reality check. So I started to really think about what kind of path I wanted to be on.”

Chan also cites the program’s importance to the future of   Stony Brook’s landmark Governor’s Island climate initiative.

“If we don’t build a foundation, we are going to miss out on some great business opportunities,” he said. “Right now we are putting a lot of effort toward establishing technology entrepreneurship and sustainable entrepreneurship.”

Fabian agreed, noting the importance of leveraging the growing power of AI.

“In terms of the current workplace, it’s time to get on the artificial intelligence and tech innovation bandwagon,” he said. “The speed of product and idea development is so rapid through technology, we all have to learn how to be more productive and use the tools to our advantage. Anyone can start a company in minutes with all the apps and software available, and today’s entrepreneurs can fail many times over with very limited cost, time, and effort. This allows them to learn from those experiences with less risk than ever.”

NSF graduate research fellowships go to 16 Tar Heels

The prestigious National Science Foundation award supports education, professional development and research.

Exterior image of UNC South Building.

This year, 12 graduate students and four undergraduates at UNC-Chapel Hill received fellowships from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program . Their research covers several STEM-related fields, including biology, sociology, genetics and anthropology.

Begun in 1952, this fellowship is the oldest of its kind directly supporting graduate students in STEM. Its purpose is not only to ensure the quality and vitality in U.S. scientific and engineering workforces but also to broaden and diversify the talent in STEM-related professions. Federal funding through a three-year stipend provides educational support, professional development and international research opportunities for recipients.

Beth Mayer-Davis, dean of The Graduate School, noted that the recipients of this year’s awards are making fundamental strides in overcoming obstacles that affect the lives of people and the environment not just in North Carolina but around the globe.

“The excellent work of these students highlights the depth of knowledge being generated through graduate education at UNC-Chapel Hill,” Mayer-Davis said. “It is this kind of impactful research that sets Carolina students apart as our next generation of leaders.”

The UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of the  Materials Research Society partnered with The Graduate School to help students develop key skills and provide opportunities to network with scientific professionals. One such opportunity is the NSF GRFP peer-review workshop. This annual peer-review workshop provides senior undergraduates and first- and second-year graduate students an environment to meet one-on-one with NSF GRFP fellows.

These UNC-Chapel Hill graduate students received NSF fellowships:

  • Andrew Boyle , College of Arts and Sciences’ physics and astronomy department.
  • Henry Dieckhaus , UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
  • Abigail Foes , UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
  • Georgina Gemayel , College of Arts and Sciences’ geography and environment department.
  • Camryn Gloor , College of Arts and Sciences’ chemistry department.
  • Lauren Hutchinson , College of Arts and Sciences’ chemistry department.
  • Micah Hysong , College of Arts and Sciences’ and UNC School of Medicine’s genetics and molecular biology curriculum.
  • Athena Owirodu , College of Arts and Sciences’ sociology department.
  • Ryan Salcido , College of Arts and Sciences’ and UNC School of Medicine’s genetics and molecular biology curriculum.
  • Gates Schneider , UNC School of Medicine’s biological and biomedical sciences program.
  • Samuel Weaver , College of Arts and Sciences’ chemistry department.
  • Adriana Wisniewski , College of Arts and Sciences’ anthropology department.

These UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students received NSF fellowships:

  • Stephanie Caddell , College of Arts and Sciences’ earth, marine and environmental sciences department.
  • Xinyi Li , College of Arts and Sciences’ and North Carolina State University’s biomedical engineering joint department.
  • Christine Mendoza , College of Arts and Sciences’ computer science department.
  • Dain Ruiz , College of Arts and Sciences’ biology department.

UCR joins group of leaders in tech partnerships, innovation

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities has 80 Innovation & Economic Prosperity member universities

best phd programs for economic development

In recognition of UC Riverside’s commitment to economic engagement, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, or APLU, has designated UCR as an Innovation & Economic Prosperity, or IEP, university. The national designation acknowledges public research universities that support economic development through innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development.

UCR is now one of 80 IEP universities.

IEP

“We join a select group of universities in the nation, including our sister campuses of UC Davis, UC Los Angeles, and UC San Diego,” said Rodolfo Torres, UCR’s vice chancellor for Research and Economic Development, or RED. “UCR is already recognized by our regional stakeholders as an engine for innovation and economic prosperity in Inland Southern California, and it is great to be recognized by our peer universities in APLU too."

Torres said SoCal OASIS™ is key to the successful IEP application. SoCal OASIS™, which is an overarching initiative including a technology hub and numerous programmatic activities, is RED’s primary mechanism for building innovation and economic development in the Inland Southern California region.

Rosibel Ochoa, associate vice chancellor in the Office of Technology Partnerships, said the designation “has cemented UC Riverside's position as a leader in technology innovation and entrepreneurship. It is a culmination of more than eight years of hard work and dedication from the university and its partners.”

The designation comes after an independent panel reviewed UCR’s application, which included an internal review of economic engagement activities, as well as input by outside stakeholders. The application required a self-study to identify areas of strength and develop a growth and improvement plan.

Applications for the designation are evaluated by a panel of reviewers representing other universities and regional and national partners. Scoring was based on criteria emphasizing universities’ development of their economic engagement enterprise, strategic communications around these efforts, and advancement of economic engagement among peer institutions.

The designation is five years in duration, after which IEP universities can be recertified by summarizing five years of “reflection memos.” At 10 years, institutions complete the same extension application, along with presenting a new growth and improvement plan. The sequence repeats every five and 10 years.

The distinction complements two designations UCR has received in the past year that similarly raise the university’s academic profile, while positioning UCR for new funding opportunities, awards, and networking opportunities. In June 2023, UCR was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities , or AAU, which includes the 71 top research universities in the nation. In January, UCR received the 2024 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement .

The APLU is a research, policy, and advocacy organization dedicated to strengthening and advancing the work of public universities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The organization has as members more than 250 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and affiliated organizations.
