Who Is Emma Watson?

Emma Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France, but raised in England. The actress got her big break as a child with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , growing up on screen as she reprised her role of Hermione Granger through the franchise's eight films. Watson went on to enjoy success in the fashion and modeling industries, and continued to prove her abilities as an actress with roles in films like My Week with Marilyn , The Perks of Being a Wallflower , Beauty and the Beast and Little Women .

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris. Her parents, both British lawyers, are Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson. Her brother, Alex, was born three years later. Her parents divorced when Watson was 5, and she moved back to Oxfordshire in England with her mother and brother.

Watson attended the Stagecoach Theatre Arts school at Oxford. She studied singing, acting and dancing, and performed in school plays. Her natural instinct for acting first came out when she won a poetry competition for reciting James Reeves' "The Sea" at age 7.

Playing Hermione Granger in 'Harry Potter'

Watson sufficiently impressed casting agents and the film's producers, and won the role of Hermione Granger, Harry Potter's smart, bossy best friend and voice of reason. Harry Potter was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe , and Rupert Grint was cast as Ron Weasley, Harry's other best friend. The trio of British child actors would become known around the globe for their roles as young wizards fighting a battle between good and evil, beginning with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in November 2001.

Watson's film debut was an enormous success: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone earned a record-breaking $33.3 million on its opening day in the United States, en route to grossing $975 million worldwide. It was nominated for three Academy Awards and seven BAFTA Awards, with Watson receiving critical praise to cement her status as an up-and-coming star.

For the next decade Watson stayed busy filming the Potter series. She reprised the role of Hermione for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002 and for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, and continued to star in the eight-part series through the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , in 2011.

Although they spent their adolescence on film sets, Watson and costars Radcliffe and Grint kept up with their lessons, with five hours of tutoring each day. Watson took high school equivalency exams, and made high scores in every subject. She took a year off from school to film the final two Harry Potter movies, but maintained that she was committed to furthering her education.

Watson tried hard to shed her child star image, one so closely tied to the Potter franchise. “I have lived in a complete bubble. They found me and picked me for the part. And now I’m desperately trying to find my way through it,” she said in an interview with Vogue in 2011.

Fashion and Education

As a teenager coming of age as an established movie star, Watson also emerged as a fashionista, her style catching the eye of many major figures in the fashion industry. "I love fashion. I think it's so important, because it's how you show yourself to the world," she once told Teen Vogue .

In September 2009 Watson announced that she was working with People Tree, a fashion label that promotes fair trade. Watson catapulted into the world of high fashion and modeling when she was chosen as the face of Burberry's Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, and again for the 2010 Spring/Summer collection.

Watson took fans by surprise when she chopped off her long locks, and debuted a pixie haircut in August 2010. The new 'do helped her shed the child star image of her Potter days, and in July 2011, Watson graced the cover of Vogue . The next month, she starred in a commercial for Lancôme perfume.

Maintaining her commitment to her education, Watson enrolled as a freshman at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in the fall of 2009. Watson claimed she chose an American university over a British education because the American system allows students to study many subjects at once. Brown was also a place, Watson said, where she could more easily blend in. “I want to be normal,” she said. "I really want anonymity."

In March 2011 Watson revealed that she was deferring her schooling to work on the Potter finale. In July she announced plans to return to Brown for a year to complete her degree after studying at Oxford University in the fall. She graduated from Brown in 2014 with an English degree. That same year, she was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

'Ballet Shoes,' 'The Tale of Despereaux'

Although Watson became closely identified with the character of Hermione Granger, as an adolescent the young actress wanted to be seen as more. In 2007 she starred in another film based on a children's novel, Ballet Shoes, by Noel Streatfeild. The film aired on BBC One, garnering decent reviews with Watson in the lead role. In 2008 she branched out into animated work, voicing the character of Princess Pea in The Tale of Despereaux .

'Beauty and the Beast'

After the conclusion of Harry Potter , Watson was cast in My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Bling Ring (2013), This Is The End (2013) and Noah (2014). In 2017 she played the lead role of Belle in the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast , which became the highest-grossing live action musical of all time.

That year Watson won the MTV Movie & TV Awards' inaugural gender-neutral award for Best Actor in Movie. “MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone,” said Watson. “But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. And that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories.”

'The Circle,' 'Little Women'

Also in 2017 Watson joined Tom Hanks and John Boyega for the thriller The Circle , which earned middling reviews despite its strong cast. Next up for the actress was the prominent role of Meg March in Greta Gerwig 's 2019 adaptation of Little Women .

Hermione_Granger

During the run of Harry Potter films, Watson received many awards for her acting, such as the National Movie Award (2007), several Otto awards and by 2010 she was named as Hollywood’s highest-paid female stars. (earning £19 million in 2009)

The final two books Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were filmed from 2008 to 2010, with the final film in the series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 released in July 2011.

It was the cumulation of one of the most successful film series in history and cemented Watson’s role as a leading female, young actor.

Post Harry Potter

Watson was gifted academically, achieving eight A* and two A at GCSE. These results were achieved despite long hours in working on the Harry Potter films. As the Harry Potter franchise came to an end, Watson became keen to break out from her role as Hermione and branch into new endeavours.

Watson continued her film career with new roles in films such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and the Bling Ring (2013). She also featured in an apocalyptic comedy This is the End (2013)

In 2005, Watson began a modelling career, appearing on the front of Teen Vogue. She has also worked as a model for Burberry and Lancome. She also acted as an advisor for People Tree, a fair trade fashion brand. She has committed to promoting vegan and sustainable fashion – that does not damage the environment.

In July 2014, Watson was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and later in the year gave an address at the United Nations in New York. Her speech was part of the UN Women Campaign HeForShe which sought to try and involve more men in the campaign for equal rights between men and women. Watson sought to refresh the concept of feminism – to get away from the idea of ‘man-hating’, but include men in the process of greater equality.

“ We want to end gender inequality — and to do this we need everyone to be involved. This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN: we want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.”

– Emma Watson, Speech at UN

She defined feminism as:

“The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

– Emma Watson

“Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong,”

– Emma Watson Speech at UN

The speech garnered widespread international coverage and received widespread praise. However, it also led to anonymous death threats and hate mail, which caused Watson to be afraid, but also more determined to continue her work.

Watson’s beliefs stemmed from her own experiences of growing up. In particular, her disapproval of the media’s attempt to sexualise her life, at aged only 14.

Since this moment, she has participated in many events which have sought to promote women’s rights and women’s political participation. Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai said Watson’s speech was helpful for her to see ‘Feminism’ as something she could identify with, without negative connotations.

In 2016, Watson started a feminist book club. Other recent roles include. Recent film roles include Noah (2014 – where she played Noah’s adopted daughter. She also starred in Regression (2015), Colonia (2015) and The Circle (2017).

Spiritual beliefs

Emma Watson has described herself as a spiritual universalist – preferring a spiritual approach which sees the unity of all main religions and spiritual paths. She does not belong to a particular religion.

I already, before I did [ Noah ], had a sense that I was someone that was more spiritual, than specifically religious. I had a sense that I believed in a higher power, but that I was more of a Universalist, I see that there are these unifying tenets between so many religions.  ( 1 )

The “Harry Potter” film series, spanning a decade from 2001 to 2011, became a global phenomenon, and Watson’s portrayal of Hermione Granger garnered widespread acclaim. Emma Watson nearly quit Harry Potter

It’s very difficult to imagine Hermione Granger as anyone other than Emma Watson, but that nearly happened!

Following Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix, rumours went around that Emma Watson might not commit to the final three films in the franchise due to concerns about her schoolwork.

The latest updates, reviews and unmissable series to watch and more!

She told MTV News that she had “a real fight on my hands to ensure that I was able to go to university and I was able to sit my A-levels”, as the filming schedule for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was full-on.

In David Heyman’s roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter , the former Potter exec told them that Emma was concerned about the impact every movie might have on her schoolwork during contract negotiations. He said “we had to be sensitive to her needs and how important school was to her” during contractual discussions.

She’s a bookworm

As Emma was so serious about her schooling while on the Harry Potter set and completed her English Literature degree at the Ivy League school, Brown University, in 2014 — it's probably no surprise that Emma Watson is a book lover.

She was responsible for launching Our Shared Shelf , a bi-monthly feminist book club in 2016. She told Vanity Fair that books have become ‘an escape, a means of empowerment, a friend I could rely on’ in her life.

Her favorite TV show is Friends

Speaking to Coveteur , Emma explained that her go-to binge-watch show is none other than the beloved NBC sitcom, Friends .

When asked what her favorite show was, she said: “This is going to make me seem very uncool, but Friends ! It blows my American friends’ minds, but in the UK, Friends still plays.

“There’s one channel that it’s on basically all the time, and I will watch Friends reruns forever.” Hopefully, she caught the Friends reunion on HBO Max !

Emma Watson is a certified yoga instructor

Amid questions about what she would do next in her life, Emma Watson decided she would learn how to teach yoga and meditation. As part of her certification, she spent a week under a vow of silence at a retreat in Canada.

She has spoken multiple times about wanting to have hobbies outside the film industry over the years and revealed that she was a board-certified yoga instructor, back in 2014.

She is a cat person

Emma Watson is an animal lover through and through, but she’s particularly fond of cats, especially her own cats, Bubbles and Domino!

She told Vanity Fair that she has even pressed pause on some opportunities in the past in favor of some downtime! In order to not “lose her mind”, she’s told people that she ‘just need[s] to go home and hang out with my cats’.

You can watch her desperately trying (and failing) to not be distracted by kittens in her interview with BuzzFeed below!

She almost starred in La La Land

Damien Chazelle’s 2016 Oscar darling La La Land nearly featured a very different leading couple!

When the film was first announced, Emma Watson and Whiplash star Miles Teller were originally attached to the project. Her involvement was publicized when La La Land was originally announced but, due to the amount of training and rehearsal time she needed for Beauty and the Beast , Emma explained she had to turn the role down in 2017.

As we now know, the lead roles of Sebastian and Mia went to Ryan Gosling and another Emma, Emma Stone — leading to Stone's first Oscar win.

[tab: Career – Harry Potter]

1999:  casting began for  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  (released as  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone  in the United States), the film adaptation of British author J. K. Rowling’s best-selling novel.

Casting Agents found Watson through her Oxford theatre teacher, and producers were impressed by her confidence.

After eight auditions, producer David Heyman told Watson and fellow applicants Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint that they had been cast for the roles of the school friends Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley respectively. Rowling supported Watson from her first screen test.

2001:  The release of  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  in 2001 was Watson’s debut screen performance. The film broke records for opening-day sales and opening-weekend takings and was the highest-grossing film of 2001. Critics praised the performances of the three leads, often singling out Watson for particular acclaim;  The Daily Telegraph  called her performance “admirable”, and IGN said she “stole the show”. Watson was nominated for five awards for her performance in  Philosopher’s Stone , winning the Young Artist Award for Leading Young Actress.

2002:  A year later, Watson again starred as Hermione in  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , the second installment of the series. Reviewers praised the lead actors’ performances. The  Los Angeles Times  said Watson and her peers had matured between films, while  The Times  criticized director Chris Columbus for “under-employing” Watson’s hugely popular character. Watson received an Otto Award from the German magazine  Bravo  for her performance.

[tab: Career HP Pg. 2]

2004:   Harry Potter  and the Prisoner of Azkaban  was released. Watson was appreciative of the more assertive role Hermione played, calling her character “charismatic” and “a fantastic role to play”. Although critics panned Radcliffe’s performance, labelling him “wooden”, they praised Watson; The New York Times lauded her performance, saying “Luckily Mr. Radcliffe’s blandness is offset by Ms. Watson’s spiky impatience. Harry may show off his expanding wizardly skills … but Hermione … earns the loudest applause with a decidedly unmagical punch to Draco Malfoy’s deserving nose.” Although Prisoner of Azkaban proved to be the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film of the entire series, Watson’s personal performance won her two Otto Awards and the Child Performance of the Year award from Total Film.

2005:  With  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire  (2005), both Watson and the  Harry Potter  film series reached new milestones. The film set records for a  Harry Potter  opening weekend, a non-May opening weekend in the US, and an opening weekend in the UK. Critics praised the increasing maturity of Watson and her teenage co-stars;  The New York Times  called her performance “touchingly earnest”. For Watson, much of the humour of the film sprang from the tension among the three lead characters as they matured. She said, “I loved all the arguing. … I think it’s much more realistic that they would argue and that there would be problems.” Nominated for three awards for  Goblet of Fire , Watson won a bronze Otto Award. Later that year, Watson became the youngest person to appear on the cover of  Teen Vogue , an appearance she reprised in August 2009. In 2006, Watson played Hermione in  The Queen’s Handbag , a special mini-episode of  Harry Potter  in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 80th birthday.

2007:  The fifth film in the  Harry Potter  franchise,  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , was released in 2007. A huge financial success, the film set a record worldwide opening-weekend gross of $332.7 million. Watson won the inaugural National Movie Award for Best Female Performance. As the fame of the actress and the series continued, Watson and fellow  Harry Potter  co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint left imprints of their hands, feet and wands in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood on 9 July 2007.

By July 2007, Watson’s work in the  Harry Potter  series was said to have earned her more than £10 million, and she acknowledged she would never have to work for money again. In March 2009, she was ranked 6th on the  Forbes  list of “Most Valuable Young Stars”, and in February 2010, she was named as Hollywood’s highest paid female star, having earned an estimated £19 million in 2009.

Despite the success of  Order of the Phoenix , the future of the  Harry Potter  franchise became surrounded in doubt, as all three lead actors were hesitant to sign on to continue their roles for the final two episodes. Radcliffe eventually signed for the final films on 2 March 2007, but Watson was considerably more hesitant. She explained that the decision was significant, as the films represented a further four-year commitment to the role, but eventually conceded that she “could never let [the role of] Hermione go”, signing for the role on 23 March 2007.

[tab: Career – HP Pg. 3]

Non-Potter:  Watson’s first non-Potter role was the 2007 BBC film Ballet Shoes, an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Noel Streatfeild. The film’s director, Sandra Goldbacher, commented that Watson was “perfect” for the starring role of aspiring actress Pauline Fossil: “She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her.” Ballet Shoes was broadcast in the UK on Boxing Day 2007 to an audience of 5.7 million viewers, to mixed reviews. Watson also lent her voice to the role of Princess Pea in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux, a children’s comedy starring Matthew Broderick with Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane (playing the character of Rubeus Hagrid) also starring in the film.

2008-2009:  Principal photography for the sixth film began in late 2007, with Watson’s part being filmed from 18 December to 17 May 2008.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  premiered on 15 July 2009, having been delayed from November 2008. With the lead actors now in their late teens, critics were increasingly willing to review them on the same level as the rest of the film’s all-star cast, which the  Los Angeles Times  described as “a comprehensive guide to contemporary UK acting”. The Washington Post  felt Watson to have given “her most charming performance to date”, while  The Daily Telegraph  described the lead actors as “newly-liberated and energized, eager to give all they have to what’s left of the series”.  The Tale of Despereaux  was released in December 2008 and grossed $87 million worldwide. In December 2008, Watson stated she wanted to go to university after she completed the Potter series.

2010-2011:  Watson’s filming for the final installment of the  Harry Potter  series,  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , began on February 18, 2009 and ended on June 12, 2010. For financial and scripting reasons, the original book was divided into two films which were shot consecutively.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1  was released in November 2010 while the second film was released in July 2011.

She also appeared in a music video for One Night Only, after meeting lead singer George Craig at the 2010 Winter/Summer Burberry advertising campaign. The video, “Say You Don’t Want It”, was screened on Channel 4 on June 26, 2010 and released on August 16. In her first post- Harry Potter  film, Watson appeared in 2011’s  My Week with Marilyn  as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant who has a few dates with the main character, Colin Clark.[END]

[tab: Career 2012 To Present]

2012: In May 2010, Watson was reported to be in talks to star in a film adaptation of  The Perks of Being a Wallflower . Filming began in summer 2011 and the film was released in September 2012.

In  The Bling Ring  (2013), Watson stars as Nicki. The film is based on the real-life Bling Ring robberies, with Watson playing a fictionalized version of Alexis Neiers – a television personality who was one of seven teenagers involved in the robberies. While the film mostly received mixed reviews, critics gave almost unanimous praise for Watson’s portrayal of Nicki in the film. Watson also had a supporting role in the apocalyptic comedy  This Is the End  (2013), where she played herself.

In June 2012, Watson was confirmed for the role of Ila in Darren Aronofsky’s  Noah , which began filming the following month for a March 2014 release. In August 2012, she confirmed that she would begin filming Guillermo del Toro’s  Beauty and the Beast  in the summer of 2013, ahead of a release in 2014. In March 2013, it was reported that Watson was in negotiations to star as the titular character in a live-action Disney adaptation of  Cinderella . Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct the adaptation, while Cate Blanchett had reportedly agreed to be the evil stepmother. Watson was offered the role, but turned it down.

In 2012, Watson was attached to the role of Emma Forrest in a film adaptation of her memoir,  Your Voice In My Head . At the time,  Harry Potter  director David Yates was attached. In a May 2013 interview, it appeared that Watson was no longer attached as the film’s star Stanley Tucci stated that the role would instead be played by Emily Blunt. However by September 2013, it was confirmed that Watson was once again involved in the production in the role of Forrest and that filming would begin in November that year with a new director, Francesca Gregorini.

2013 – Present: As of June 2013, Watson is set to work with  Harry Potter  producer David Heyman for her next film  Queen of the Tearling , based on a yet-to-be-released book trilogy. She will lead the film as heroine  Kelsea Glynn  as well as being an executive producer. Warner Bros. will distribute the film.

In September 2013, it was reported that Watson would star in  While We’re Young , the film adaptation of Adena Halpern’s 2010 novel  29 , which focuses on a young-at-heart grandmother who would rather spend time with her granddaughter (Watson) than her daughter. The film will be directed by Stephen Chbosky, who Watson collaborated with on  Perks of Being a Wallflower . In October 2013, she was chosen as the Woman of the Year by  GQ . Also, in 2013 she became certified to teach yoga and meditation.

[tab: Emma – Fashion Model]

In 2008, the British press reported that Watson was to replace Keira Knightley as the face of the fashion house, but this was denied by both parties. In June 2009, following several months of rumours, Watson confirmed that she would be partnering with Burberry as the face of their Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign, for which she received an estimated six-figure fee. She also appeared in Burberry’s 2010 Spring/Summer campaign alongside her brother Alex, musicians George Craig and Matt Gilmour, and model Max Hurd. In February 2011, Watson was awarded the Style Icon award from British  Elle  by Dame Vivienne Westwood. Watson continued her involvement in fashion advertising when she announced she had been chosen as the face of Lancôme in March 2011.

In September 2009, Watson announced her involvement with People Tree, a Fair Trade fashion brand. Watson worked as a creative adviser for People Tree to create a spring line of clothing, which was released in February 2010; the range featured styles inspired by southern France and London. The collection, described by  The Times  as “very clever” despite their “quiet hope that [she] would become tangled at the first hemp-woven hurdle”, was widely publicised in magazines such as  Teen Vogue ,  Cosmopolitan , and  People . Watson, who was not paid for the collaboration, admitted that competition for the range was minimal, but argued that “Fashion is a great way to empower people and give them skills; rather than give cash to charity you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting things they take pride in”; adding, “I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.” Watson continued her involvement with People Tree, resulting in the release of a 2010 Autumn/Winter collection.

Watson has appeared for six years running in men’s magazine FHM’s  100 Sexiest Women  list. She first appeared in the list, voted for by readers, in 2007, placing 98th. The following years saw her placed 33rd, 47th, 29th, 23rd and in 2012, 64th.

Emma Watson’s Parents, Birthplace, And Childhood

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson, or as she is more commonly known, Emma Watson, was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris. Both her parents are English lawyers who took their passion from the court to the city of love, combining English and Turkish blood to bless the world with this perfect magician. She is the gem that gave us one of the most satisfying punches in the history of fiction and taught us the right way to cast Wingardium Leviosa. And “It’s leviOsa, not levioSA”

Her father’s name is Chris Watson, and he met Emma’s mother, Jacqueline Luesby, in their shared field of profession. Emma spent her early childhood in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris. Sadly, her parents divorced when she was still a fledgling. Later on, she moved to Oxfordshire to live with her mother.

emma watson actress biography

Emma is unarguably a gifted child, brimming with character, brilliance, talent, and a burning passion. However, her career is filled with continuous efforts and hard work that further polished her raw potential into the person we know today. After moving to Oxfordshire after her parent’s divorce, Emma started attending the Dragon School.

Even as young as 6 years old, Emma knew that she wanted to become an actress. And unlike many others her age, Emma started taking extra classes to learn skills that would eventually help her secure the role that changed her life.

Emma began her training at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts. There she studied singing, dancing, and acting in part-time classes. After Dragon School, she moved to Headington School, London, and continued her education and pursued her acting career with firm devotion.

Becoming Hermione Granger!

The strings of faith started to move in 1999 when the castings for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone began. When the news of the cast needing a young talented actor to play the brilliant and adorable witch went out, Emma’s Oxford Theatre teacher recommended her for the role.

Later during a rehearsal, J. K. Rowling complimented her for her talent and remarked she was the perfect choice for Hermione’s character. This feedback was also echoed by her producers, and Emma got the role of Hermione Granger.

Fun Fact: Emma auditioned eight times before her director, David Heyman, selected her for the role.

Movie 3: Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Movie 3: Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was when Emma won the Child Performance Of The Year Award. However, the 2004 addition to the movie was arguably the least favorite among the audience. It was widely criticized and grossed the least amount of viewers and revenue relative to other parts of the series.

Still, Emma’s performance was widely praised. And I mean, who can’t love it. She gave us the best punch in the face moment in the history of movies. Being an anime fan, I love to compare it to Luffy’s punch to the Celestial Dragon at Sabaody!

Movie 4: Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Movie 4: Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

2005 was when the Harry Potter series finally popped off on the global scene. The lead actors became famous and were recognized for their excellent performances in the series. Despite being released near the end of the year, the movie broke all records and grossed over $273 million!

It consistently made into the top 3 of various best films of the year lists across the internet. Emma, in particular, won the Bronze Otto Award for her brilliant acting in the movie. The New York Times article praised her performance as “ gutsy, confident, and touchingly earnest.”

The following year, Emma appeared in a special mini-episode called the Queen’s Handbag, released to celebrate the Queen of England’s 80th Birthday. Pretty amazing to celebrate your 80 th birthday with a series, right?

Later that year, despite the success of the series and her worldwide popularity, Emma hesitated to sign for the next installment. This was because the hectic routine took a toll on her health and academics. However, she later gave in, stating that she could never let go of Hermione.

In 2010, Emma made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. Each of her films grossed an average of $753 million, and she became the highest-grossing actress of the decade.

This would be Emma’s last time acting as Hermione and working with her best friends. The group was rarely seen together on the set until recently, in 2022. Her fans were pretty excited to see her reunited with the multiple cast members of the film series for “ Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.”

Emma’s Life Outside of Harry Potter

Teenage years.

Emma Watson, along with her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, grew up on the sets of Harry Potter. For her, growing up in the spotlight was challenging mentally, physically, and of course, academically.

She often said in interviews that she never had an everyday teenage life. “I have never really been a teenager because I have been Hermione for such a long time.”

Education was the one thing Emma never compromised on. She and her co-stars were tutored for up to 5 hours a day. She took her GCSE examination in June 2006 and scored 8 A* and 2 A’s. In 2007, she took AS Levels in English, Art, Geography, and History of Art. However, she later dropped History of Art and scored straight A’s in the other three subjects.

Her education was greatly affected due to hectic schedules. Still, she was determined to complete her education. She once mentioned, “I feel it’s terribly important to continue with my education in case acting doesn’t work out for me.”

Further Education

Emma took a gap year after completing her A levels. She later accepted admission to Brown University, from where she graduated in English Literature on May 25, 2014. She completed her degree in 5 years and attended Worcester College, Oxford, during the 2011–12 academic year as part of the Visiting Student Programme. In 2016, she was appointed as a visiting Fellow in Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University.

Adulthood And Personal Life

Emma Watson has stated in several interviews that she wants to keep her personal life private and doesn’t want people to know about that part of her life. She calls herself a Spiritual Universalist.

It might be weird to know that Emma is also a certified Yoga instructor. She spent a week in a Canadian facility, where everyone took a vow of silence to learn how to be “at home with oneself.” It is pretty striking to know that the residents there were not allowed to speak for a whole week to learn this lesson, but it’s also an act of meditation.

She revealed that being in the limelight from such a tender age took a toll on her mental health. She found peace by remaining rooted in her own identity.

Other Acting Gigs (2007 – 2017)

Emma Watson will always be the ‘know-it-all’ Hermione Granger, but her first non- Potter role was in the 2007 BBC film Ballet Shoes . It was an adaptation of the novel by Noel Streatfeild. She nailed the role of Pauline Fossil in that movie, and there was no looking back for her after that.

With the end of the Harry Potter series in 2011, Hermione bid farewell to us. It was an end to a decade-long journey and commitment for Emma. In 2011, she appeared in another film, My Week with Marilyn , playing the role of Lucy, a wardrobe assistant.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower , directed by Steve Chbosky, and featuring Emma Watson, was released in September 2012. Her role as Sam Button received a good response from critics. One of them stated that Watson “sheds the memory of a decade playing Hermione in the Harry Potter series with an about-face as a flirtatious but insecure free spirit.”

She later appeared in the satirical crime film, The Bling Ring and was praised for her outstanding performance. Her other acting gigs included featuring in a comedy movie titled “ This is the end ,” opposite Seth Rogen and James Franco. I have to admit this comedy duo helped Emma outshine her previous roles and presented a view that was new to my eyes. With the cast of so many other characters, this movie is still one of the best comedy movies on my list.

Activism And Advocacy

Looking at Emma made me realize that you don’t need to have a law degree to become an advocate. Anyway, it is too late for me now. She was an Actress, Academic, and an Activist through and through.

The Emma Watson Effect

Emma’s impact on teenage girls’ view of women’s rights has been referred to as the “Emma Watson effect.” Her work has inspired many young girls, including Nobel winner, Malala, to refer to themselves as a feminist.

Emma is often called the “role model” for young girls and women, which she shies away from. Her role as Hermione in Harry Potter brought her phenomenal fame (money, too!) across the globe, and she became an overnight sensation. People from across the Globe loved her, and she was even named the Sixth Most Admired Woman In The World in surveys conducted by YouGov in 2020.

Many people even predicted her brilliant future as a model. Although Emma often attends photo shoots for various glossy magazines, she does not plan to get seriously engaged in this business and considers it just a fad.

Despite quite a successful actress career, Emma Watson pays much attention to her education. She has gone through several educational stages in her life.

From September 1995 to June 1998, Emma Watson attended Lynam’s kindergarten, a part of Dragon School. Lynams is one of the most prestigious kindergartens in England, considered a pre-stage of schooling. Emma showed her talent at the age of 7 years; she read a poem by James Reeves Sea and took first place in the recitation competition.

In 1998, Emma started her studies at the Dragon School in Oxford. This school is considered one of the best private schools in England. Many graduates who attended the Dragon School became famous in different areas and succeeded incredibly. She played field hockey club in Oxford.

From 2003 to 2007, after studying at the Dragon School, Watson enrolled at Headington School, Oxford private girls’ school.

This place may seem unusual for the modern generation because all students here are females. Also, each student had to participate in every school event, which was tricky for young Emma Watson due to her intensive schedule. The girl met her best friends: top models Sophie Sumner and Amy Vaver.

Because of the constant shooting and participation in various public events, Emma Watson was always exhausted, and she simply did not have enough energy or time to study correctly and attend school. After the work on the fifth part of the Harry Potter film series was over, Emma was determined to go back to school. However, when she received an offer to play one of the significant roles in the Ballet Shoes, she couldn’t refuse. Of course, because of her popularity, teachers forgave the girl for her absences in classes and delays with her homework, so Emma graduated from school without any difficulties.

In 2008, Emma Watson finished summer acting courses at The Royal Academy of Dramatic (RADA) in London. RADA is one of the most prestigious and influential theater schools in the whole world. After graduation, Emma took a sabbatical year from her studies to continue filming in the Harry Potter film series.

In 2009, Emma Watson decided to pursue her education and applied to Brown University, one of the oldest universities in the USA. This institution is a part of the system of the best educational establishments in the United States, the Ivy League. Emma’s primary focus was studying history, philosophy, and English literature. However, due to her participation in creating the last part of the Harry Potter movie series, Emma Watson had to pause her education in 2010.

From 2011 to 2012, the actress continued to gather knowledge and self-improve at Worcester College. This institution is an excellent mix of old traditions and modern views. The primary difference of this college from other establishments is that it has no limitations regarding the age of its students; it is open to everyone who has passed the exams. Emma Watson chose Worcester College because of the student exchange programs that allowed scholars to transfer to Brown University. She was there for only one year, studying English literature, but she never regretted her staying there.

In 2012, Watson enrolled in Brown University for the second time after taking a 2-year break. Despite all the difficulties and hurdles, she finished her education in May 2014 and earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. As she admitted, the university study was accompanied by inevitable hassles, but the students and teachers always treated her with understanding and were ready to help her.

Family and Personal Life

As for the family, Emma Watson, apart from her brother Alex, has twin stepsisters, Nina Watson and Lucy Watson, and brother Toby Watson. On the mother’s side, she also has brothers David and Andy. Even though the actress does not see them often, the family is always in the first place for her.

Emma’s father, Chris Watson, was born in 1958 in Britain. He graduated from Oxford University and obtained a law degree. During his studies, Chris Watson met Emma’s mother-to-be, Jacqueline Luesby, who also studies at the University of Oxford. In the late 80s, they moved to France. For some reason, the relationship between Chris and Jacqueline looked more like a friendship than love, and the couple decided to divorce in 1995.

Today, Chris Watson is a partner and one of the executives at the CMS Cameron McKenna company. He speaks English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. He has a vast professional experience. Chris was an intern in Iran and France, and his articles are often published in law magazines.

Chris Watson played a massive role in Emma’s life. After the divorce, Emma returned to Britain with her brother Alex and mother. The family’s financial situation is shaky because Jacqueline and Chris do not earn much money. However, Mr. Watson was determined to give his daughter an excellent education and insisted on her attendance at one of the most prestigious schools in England. Emma always says she is very grateful to her father for it; she tries to study as perfectly as possible to demonstrate her gratitude to her dad. Now, Emma and Chris often spend time together. They go for walks and attend various exhibitions. Chris Watson almost always accompanies Emma at different events and premieres.

Emma’s mother, Jacqueline Luesby, was born in 1959 in France. Just like Chris Watson, she graduated from Oxford University with a law degree. Jacqueline prefers to avoid the cameras, so she is rarely seen with Emma. But, according to Emma’s words, her mother is the one who influenced her style by her French elegance and charm. In every interview, Emma Watson speaks about her mother with incredible tenderness, warmth, and love.

Alexander Chris Watson was born in Paris, France, on December 15, 1992. Now, he is building his modeling career. He took part in photo shoots with Emma for Burberry and People Tree advertising campaigns. Alex Watson starred in the music video of a famous English singer, Pixie Lott. Also, on his account are a few bit parts in several movies and several photo shoots for British magazines. Emma and Alex have excellent and friendly relationships. Alex considers Emma a great support for him: she gives valuable tips that help his career development. She is not just his sister but also his best friend.

Nina Watson and Lucy Watson are the daughters of Chris Watson and his new wife, Julie. Twins were born on September 17, 2004. They also appeared in the movie The Ballet Shoes in episodic roles and played little Pauline Fossil. Toby Watson was born in 2003. He is also Chris and Julie’s child. He was seen several times in London together with Emma. In 2010, Emma Watson took him to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. At the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, all guests were touched when they saw Emma hugging Toby, Nina, and Lucy. Emma likes to be an older sister to her numerous brothers and sisters.

Emma also has stepbrothers David and Andy Taylor, from her mother’s side. They are the sons of Emma’s stepfather.

Love Affairs

Emma Watson prefers not to discuss her private life, so she rarely mentions her love affairs. The actress prefers to reply to such questions with general phrases about what qualities she likes in men and what kind of family she wants. However, apart from long relationships, Emma Watson also had numerous admirers, and she rarely lacked men’s attention.

During filming the first movie, she liked Tom Felton, who played the role of Draco Malfoy. Later, Emma Watson confessed that when she was ten-twelve years old, she had a terrible crush on Tom Felton, who ignored her. Tom saw Emma as his little sister, and it broke her heart. The first love is not always mutual.

The first profound love of Emma Watson was a rugby player, Tom Ducker. The couple started dating when Emma was 17, but, as often happens at their age, the relationship didn’t last too long.

In the summer of 2009, Emma Watson met a 27-year-old bank clerk, Jay Barrymore, with whom Emma developed her first lasting relationship: the couple had been together for over two years.

There is little information on Will Adamowicz, except that he was born between 1989 and 1991 and likes rowing. Once the couple’s first pictures appeared in the press, Will Adamowicz deleted all his social profiles from the Internet. In 2012, Will visited Emma at the film set of The Bling Ring, after which the couple attended the Coachella festival, where they celebrated Emma’s birthday and had a lot of fun. In January 2014, fans and the press found out about the end of their relationship right after journalists raised a fuss because of Will’s photo with the package of white powder. Later, it became known that Will and Emma had parted in the summer of 2013. According to their friends, the actress’s busy schedule was the reason for this.

At the beginning of 2014, there were only rumors about a new relationship with an Oxford rugby player, Matthew Janney. However, sometime later, the couple was caught together on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean, and this was the first time they were seen together. Twenty-two years old then, Matt played in the Oxford rugby team and was the best team player. Therefore, it explains why Emma Watson started to attend rugby matches more often at the end of 2013. In November 2014, the couple ended their year-long relationship . The official reason for the breakup was the busy schedules of both Emma and Matt. After the break up with ex Matt Janney, Emma Watson commented in an interview for the September 2015 issue of  Vogue UK : “I went on a silent retreat because I really wanted to figure out how to be at home with myself.”

The press and numerous fans always discuss Emma’s relationships with handsome guys. This is unsurprising because the actress is guarding her private life so carefully that it only stirs curiosity. As the Western media reports, Emma Watson is now in love. Her choice did not stop at some famous actors, models, or singers. The name of Emma’s protégé is William ‘Mack’ Knight, and he describes himself as a US tech and business entrepreneur. Mack has been working for four years as a senior manager at Medallia company, which sells software to improve the customer experience. A source in The Sun magazine told them: “Mack is just a normal, down-to-earth guy.” It remains unknown how William Knight got acquainted with Emma Watson. However, Mack visited Emma in her hometown of Oxford for New Year 2016.

Social Activity

Emma Watson can boast of stylish photo shoots, memorable roles in modern films, and social activities.

Emma Watson actively fights for women’s rights. Watson visited Bangladesh and Zambia to promote girls’ education in these countries.

In June 2014, Watson became a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women. This entity started its work in January 2011. It was created to combat discrimination against women in twelve significant areas of modern life: education, health, employment, human rights, and others.

In September 2014, Emma Watson gave a speech at the UN headquarters in New York to support the launch of the HeForShe campaign that encourages men to stand for gender equality.

Also, in September, Watson visited Uruguay for the first time as the Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women. There, she gave a speech emphasizing the need for women’s participation in politics.

The HeForShe campaign had a massive success on the Internet. Thanks to this campaign, the #HeForShe hashtag was mentioned more than 1.3 billion times on social networks, raising the question of inequality between men and women. In 2015, Emma Watson was named The Campaigner of the Year and received the Observer Ethical Award of 2015 .

Emma Watson wants to devote herself to social activities in 2016 as the Goodwill Ambassador for the UN. In January 2016, she started the feminist Goodreads book club Our Shared Shelf , which aimed to raise the topic of gender inequality by discussing scientific articles and books on this subject.

Emma Watson’s life story is vivid and bright but simultaneously challenging. Despite her young age, she is already involved in social activity and joined the women’s rights movement. We hope you have enjoyed exploring Emma Watson’s biography and her success story and that it inspired you to discover.

Emma is good looking pretty artist i had ever seen

Her shoe size is US 8.

I can say about this, how u get this info?,it is fake?

It’s 8.5, actually. I saw a close-up of her in heels with EU 39 on it. I’ll try to find it again.

emma ilove u i want to meet u i hope my message will reach to her my life is boring with out emma name i wnat to meet u and and tell u how much i love u

emma ilove u i want to meet u i hope my message will reach to her my life is boring with out emma name i wnat to meet u and and tell u how much i love u:….:…….:….:

Grandfather? Don’t you mean grandmother??

Yup, you are right. Corrected.

I LOVE YOU ”EMMA” Will You Marry Me???? ??? ?? ?

me 5’5″ /165cm ! oh height 5’5″ / 165cm

I love Emma. Interesting info. Though I find it hard to believe that her waist is 23″ at 5’5″ and 110 lbs. I am 5’1″, have a petite frame (smaller than Emma’s) and am naturally underweight at 86 lbs. My waist is 24″ with a flat stomach. I looked at the tape measure to see 23″. Even with Emma’s toned flat stomach there is no way she’s that small given her frame and weight. Logically, it doesn’t make sense that I would have a 24″ waist at 86 lbs and she 23″ at 110 lbs. I’d have to see the measuring done in person to believe it.

Actually it is. Given that she has a longer frame and hips that flare as so wide(there is more distance from her rib cage to her hips), her body has the ability to create the deeper dip of a 23″ waist. Also, judging by her toned body, her body fat % is low as well as her muscle mass. So, she is altogether as lithe as a model. (One with hips anyway)

That makes sense. Height and length of torso makes a difference. Given my thin frame, very low body fat % and muscle mass (I’m trying to tone what little I have)if I were taller I would look sickly. Everything is in perspective. In any case Emma looks great!

it doesn’t matter about height when it comes to waist sizes, there are people who are “5’7 with a 24 inch waist, i’m “5’3 and i have a 22 inch waist, megan fox is “5’4 and she also has a 22 inch waist (said it herself in an interview.) you can do waist exercises to reduce your waist size its no biggy (:

I LIKE YOU VERY MUCH “EMMA CHARLOTTE DUERRE WATSON” I want to meet you! Will you meet me ??? ??? ?? ?

Emma is a very private person. All I can find are rumours about her boyfriend’s. Today I found 2. Please feel free to discuss her measurements. Nothing more than that and her career will show up. Don’t Love her. Respect her. Damn it. She’s a Beautiful Woman, but that’s all I know. Guys in love with her, grow up.

My sister is 104 pounds at 5’7 and her waist is like 27 or 26 inches so weight has nothing to do with waist size. It’s possible to have an 23 in waist at her height

Emma is so beautiful and pretty!!! She is one of my favorite actress

Emma Watson was born in Paris, France, the daughter of English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson.Watson lived in Paris until the age of five. Her parents separated when she was young; following their divorce, she moved with her mother and younger brother to Oxfordshire, spending weekends at her father’s house in London.

You are so sweet

i like the actress emma Watson she is my favorite. speakin of measurements, I am also a 32b. I have a tiny waist but I have fairly muscular legs and a little bit of muscle in my arms. I like emma Watson cuz she seems like a nice person I watched her on ellen and I bet the people that talked to her and didn’t know who she was and then she told ellen what happened I bet those people feel really stupid for not recognizing emma sooner.

hey cherryblosson, we’d all be that pretty if we had professionals to do our makeup and make us look flawless.

U cannot be pretty anyway.

I love u emma i can die 4 u. I am 13 years old but still i can do anything 4 u. U r my life emma

Same here dude

Emma has never said that she smokes, nor has she ever been photographed smoking, nor has anyone ever seen her smoking

Just a small comment to correct her measurements…32-23-34 in… if she wears a 32B bra, then her bust measurement isn’t 32 as that is the measurement of her ribcage below the breasts. For each letter (A, B, C, etc) you add an inch. Therefore, her measurements would be 34-23-34… a ‘perfect’ figure as the goal is to have the same measurement for bust and hips with the waist 10 inches smaller. It would be nice to see these written correctly. Thanks.

32B is obviously the wrong size. The band should be roughly the same as the underbust measurement and the underbust measurement isn’t usually more than a couple inches larger than the waist measurement. Her bra size is more likely somewhere around 26E (26DDD US) if her waist and bust measurements were correctly reported, maybe around 28D if her waist was reported as smaller than it actually is or her ribcage expands much more quickly from the waist than most women around her build.

It is actually “The REMAINS of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro and not the remainders.

I love u so much emma ! So cuteyy emma

You are so so sweet !! !! !! !

I love your acting. & u

her and Matthew Janney are not dating anymore.

Emma is really get she is the ideal global superstar every thing she does has a grace she is an ideal women and a beautiful girl

She is French because she was born in France

She is not french! She is english but was born in France!

She looks so tinny tiny to me! 5′ 3″ 102 lbs. 32″ 21″ 32″ I’m wrong again!

Emma is soooo amazing!

Got my driver’s license a day after and past on my first attempt.

I LOVE EMMA WATSON! She has been my favorite actress since I was 6!

I love emma watson 🙂 Though I don’t think she has the french citizenship, she’s definitely british even though she was born in France. France does not give the citizenship if you’re just born there.

Hi I like emma emma watson is ao beautiful

she is pretty

She isn’t French. Her parents were British.

What the hell Emma doesn’t have dark brown eyes, her eyes are are light brown/hazel.

Emma doesn’t follow a religion. While doing press for Noah she stated that she doesn’t follow a specific religious doctrine but that she does believe in a ‘higher power’.

I always read different things about this height weight issue- here that she weighs 53kg at 165cm which sounds healthy to me on others 50kg…so what is more right? I always saw her as someone within a healthy weight range which is rare in Hollywood but now I am not so sure anymore…of course she is stunning in character/ Intelligence but because of that I was hoping for her to become a new role model in Hollywood..I really admire her not for her figure but for her as a person and actress of course. Hope you get what I mean.

She says in an interview that her biceps size is nearly 14 inches flexed and a bit over 10 inches unflexed

Emma Watson’s Complete Dating History: Prince Harry, Chord Overstreet and More Francis Boulle Jay Barrymore Rafael Cebrián George Craig Johnny Simmons Will Adamowicz Matthew Janney Prince Harry Roberto Aguire William “Mack” Knight Brendan Wallace

I was so happy to see Emma Watson finally posted on Twitter after her long absense. Although, I was sad to see the engagement rumors weren’t true… I guess her and Leo Robinton are not engaged. The last movie I saw with Emma was Beauty And The Beast. It was better than Harry Potter I thought.

Her other film roles include Regression (2015), Colonia (2015), and The Circle (2017).

From 2011 to 2014, Watson split her time between working on films and continuing her education, graduating from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature in May 2014. Her modelling work has included campaigns for Burberry and Lancôme. She also lent her name to a line of clothing for People Tree. She was honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2014, winning British Artist of the Year. That same year, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill ambassador and helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which encourages gender equality.

Early life and education

Watson was born on 15 April 1990 in Paris, France, to English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson. Watson lived in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris until the age of five. Her parents divorced when she was young, and Watson moved to England to live with her mother in Oxfordshire while spending weekends at her father’s house in London. Watson has said she speaks some French, though “not as well” as she used to. After moving to Oxford with her mother and brother, she attended the Dragon School, remaining there until 2003. From the age of six, she wanted to become an actress, and trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part-time theatre school where she studied singing, dancing, and acting.

By the age of 10, Watson had performed in Stagecoach productions and school plays including Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince, but she had never acted professionally prior to the Harry Potter series. After the Dragon School, Watson moved on to Headington School, Oxford. While on film sets, she and her castmates were tutored for up to five hours a day. In June 2006, she took GCSE school examinations in 10 subjects, achieving eight A* and two A grades. In May 2007, she took AS levels in English, Geography, Art, and History of Art. The following year, she dropped History of Art to pursue the three A levels, receiving an A grade in each subject.

Watson took a gap year after leaving school, to film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows beginning in February 2009, but said she intended to continue her studies and later confirmed that she had chosen Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In March 2011, after 18 months at the university, Watson announced that she was deferring her course for “a semester or two”, though she attended Worcester College, Oxford during the 2011–12 academic year as part of the Visiting Student Programme.

In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Watson said just before graduation that it took five years to finish instead of four because, owing to her acting work, she “ended up taking two full semesters off”. On 25 May 2014, she graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. In 2013, she became certified to teach yoga and meditation. As part of this certification, she attended a week-long meditation course at a Canadian facility, in which residents are not allowed to speak, in order “to figure out how to be at home with myself”. In an interview with Elle Australia, she said that an uncertain future meant finding “a way to always feel safe and at home within myself. Because I can never rely on a physical place.”

PERSONAL LIFE

Watson is single, which she described in 2019 with the self-coined phrase “self-partnered”. While promoting the film Noah, Watson was questioned about her faith, and she described herself as a spiritual Universalist.

In February 2016, Watson was appointed visiting fellow at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. Marai Larasi, an activist on the issue of violence against women, was her guest to the 75th Golden Globe Awards in 2018.
