World Environment Day Essay

100 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a global event celebrated each year on 5 June. It's a day when people from all walks of life come together to celebrate our environment and take action to protect it. The day was first celebrated in 1972 after the United Nations General Assembly declared that it should be observed as an annual event. The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage people to take positive environmental action and to raise awareness about the issues our planet faces. In recent years, the focus of World Environment Day has shifted towards climate change and its effects on the environment.

200 Words Essay On World Environment Day

Every year, on June 5th, the world celebrates World Environment Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the state of our planet and the importance of taking care of our environment. It was first celebrated in 1974 and has since been observed by countries all over the world.

The theme for World Environment Day 2022 was ‘Only One Earth’ with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. World Environment Day 2022 was hosted by Sweden. The campaign encourages people all over the world to live sustainably while highlighting climate action, environmental action, and pollution action.

While the consumer decisions we make on an individual basis certainly have an impact, it is our collective efforts that will bring about the profound environmental transformation we require to move toward a more sustainable and just world where everyone may thrive.

Every World Environment Day is an opportunity to reflect on our role in creating a more sustainable future. We can all do something to make a difference, and the cumulative impact of many small actions can be significant. We should all work together to protect our planet and ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and resources just as much as we did.

500 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a day that encourages us all to become activists and take positive steps in improving air quality, reducing waste, preserving ocean life, and protecting threatened species. It’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for Mother Earth and protect it for future generations.

How to Celebrate World Environment Day

There are plenty of ways to celebrate World Environment Day, and it really depends on what you're most interested in. If you want to do something hands-on, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with local organisations or get involved in cleanup events. You could also plant a tree, or join in a march or rally to raise awareness for environmental concerns.

If you're more of a learn-and-do kind of person, you can find plenty of great educational resources online or at your local library. You can also attend workshops and panel discussions to learn more about how you can make a difference. Furthermore, you can always reduce your own environmental impact by making small changes in your everyday life.

Challenges Of Achieving Environmental Sustainability

As it stands, achieving environmental sustainability presents many challenges. One of the primary issues is that environmental degradation is caused not just by local, individual human behaviour, but is often a result of global industrial systems and large-scale capitalist businesses. This means that those who can have the biggest impact rarely feel the most immediate consequences, and it’s up to us to enforce better practices for the whole planet.

Another challenge is that even if we can get large entities on board with implementing sustainable practices, these changes may take years to fully implement and take effect. Additionally, individual human behaviour tends to be hard to change as we are creatures of habit; this makes it increasingly difficult to get people to really make an effort in changing how they interact with their environment. We can't just talk about making environmental changes—we have to implement them.

Lastly, there's the issue of resources not being balanced or distributed evenly—many areas are already running very low on resources such as water or food, and implementing sustainable practices in these kinds of regions will be even more difficult than in areas with resource availability. All these challenges mean that proper dedication needs to be given in order to make real progress towards a sustainable future for our planet.

How You Can Make Your Contribution

World Environment Day is a global movement that unites citizens from across the world to take action to protect and preserve our planet. This annual event, started in 1974 by the United Nations, helps us all understand how our actions can help in making our environment healthier and cleaner.

There are plenty of ways you can help make a difference on this special day. From organising or taking part in clean-up events, planting trees, or encouraging your community or family to reduce their energy use and conserve water—the possibilities are endless. You could also support environmental organisations by donating or volunteering with them. Taking those small steps will bring us closer to creating a healthier planet.

Stay up to date:, climate crisis.

  • Humanity is using up the world’s resources faster than they can naturally recover, says the UN.
  • World Environment Day, on 5 June, is a global event to celebrate and encourage action on the climate crisis.
  • The cost of climate adaptation in developing nations is now estimated to be $500 billion a year.
  • CO2 emissions will need to halve by 2030, the UN says, to avoid temperature rises of 2.7C and higher by the end of the century.

We’re running out of time to save our planet - using up the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life - and nature simply cannot keep up with our demands. That’s the message from the organizers of World Environment Day 2022 on 5 June.

What is World Environment Day?

First held in 1973, World Environment Day is described as “a global platform for inspiring positive change” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the organization that created it.

It is now the largest global environmental event, with millions of people in more than 150 countries participating. The idea is to engage “governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities [in] raising awareness and celebrating environmental action”.

The 2022 World Environment Day, hosted by Sweden, campaigns for “collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet”, encouraging everyone, everywhere, to live sustainably and take action on the climate crisis.

This year marks 50 years since the first global environment summit. The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm led to the founding of UNEP .

An close view of an insect

UNEP says that, despite a raft of climate agreements, progress towards halting climate change is still too slow and individuals and civil society must play a key role in raising awareness and urging governments and the private sector to make large-scale changes.

Closing the adaptation gap

The cost of climate change is rising, says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, as is the gap between what is being spent to adapt to climate change and what is needed . As recently as 2014, the cost of adaptation in developing nations was estimated at $100 billion a year . Today that figure is $500 billion .

To limit the rise in global temperature, which is driving climate change, to 1.5C, worldwide CO2 emissions will need to halve by 2030, UNEP says. If there is no change in current plans, temperatures will be 2.7C higher by the end of the century .

Climate change poses an urgent threat demanding decisive action. Communities around the world are already experiencing increased climate impacts, from droughts to floods to rising seas. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report continues to rank these environmental threats at the top of the list.

To limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, it is essential that businesses, policy-makers, and civil society advance comprehensive near- and long-term climate actions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The World Economic Forum's Climate Initiative supports the scaling and acceleration of global climate action through public and private-sector collaboration. The Initiative works across several workstreams to develop and implement inclusive and ambitious solutions.

This includes the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, a global network of business leaders from various industries developing cost-effective solutions to transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. CEOs use their position and influence with policy-makers and corporate partners to accelerate the transition and realize the economic benefits of delivering a safer climate.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2022 rated climate action failure as the most severe risk facing the world over the next decade, a risk it said had been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A chart showing the date of Earth Overshoot Day if the world's population lived like the following countries

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Another way of measuring how humanity is using Earth’s resources faster than they can be replaced is Earth Overshoot Day , the day in the year on which the world stops living sustainably. The earlier in the year it falls, the more unsustainable life on Earth becomes.

It is calculated annually by the Global Footprint Network (GFN) by dividing the amount of resources Earth can generate in a given year by human demand for resources in that year. In 2021 it was 29 July. The global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed 2020 Earth Overshoot Day back to 22 August. The date for 2022 has yet to be calculated.

For World Environment Day 2022, the theme #OnlyOneEarth, which was used at the first global environment gathering in 1972, is being revived. Sweden will also host an international conference called Stockholm+50 to accelerate climate action.

Across the world, events are planned from seminars and concerts to beach and countryside clean-ups. Brussels will be staging a city environment festival , while Mumbai will stage the Green Ride Cyclothon to promote a more sustainable way to travel.

Solutions to plastic pollution

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled.

An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

Discarded or burnt single-use plastic harms human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor.

With available science and solutions to tackle the problem, governments, companies and other stakeholders must scale up and speed actions to solve this crisis.

This underscores the importance of this World Environment Day in mobilizing transformative action from every corner of the world.

Cover of a practical guide for Environment Day 2022

#OnlyOneEarth Practical Guide

UNEP has published a practical guide outlining some of the collective, transformative actions that governments, cities, businesses, organizations and individuals can take to protect and restore our planet.

Fifty years celebrating World Environment Day

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2023, it is hosted by Côte D'Ivoire.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

Did you know?

  • Some 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into oceans. This may triple by 2040.
  • More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers.
  • A shift to a circular economy can reduce the volume of plastics entering oceans by over 80 per cent by 2040; reduce virgin plastic production by 55 per cent; save governments US$70 billion by 2040; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent; and create 700,000 additional jobs – mainly in the global south.

Last year, 175 UN Member States endorsed a historic resolution to end plastic pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement that will be ready by the end of 2024. This is the most significant environmental multilateral deal since the Paris accord. It is an insurance policy for this generation and future ones, so they may live with plastic and not be doomed by it.

Plastic, a danger for climate change

Plastic is predominantly produced from oil and gas, both of which are fossil fuels. The more plastic we make, the more fossil fuel is required, the more we intensify the climate crisis. Also, plastic products create greenhouse gas emissions across their whole lifecycle. If no action is taken, greenhouse gas emissions caused by plastic could account for 19% of the Paris Agreement's total allowable emissions in 2040 to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Environmental Protection Essay

How to Protect the Environment Essay

Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment against various human activities that degrade, destroy, or otherwise reduce its quality for future generations. Environmental protection has become a widespread issue in recent decades as human pressures on the environment have increased exponentially.

There are many ways to protect the environment. One way to protect the environment is by recycling – a way to reduce the carbon footprint and conserve natural resources. It also decreases the amount of waste that goes into landfills, which causes less pollution to water bodies. Another way is to use eco-friendly products in your life. This can contribute to a healthier environment by reducing the number of harmful chemicals and toxins in the air, ground, and water.

To protect the environment, we should be conscious of what we consume and how we consume it. Many factors affect the quality of our air, water, and land, but it is best to start small by always considering its impact on the environment.

Afforestation and tree plantation help protect our environment by reducing global warming, soil erosion, etc. We can reduce our carbon footprint through carpooling instead of driving, which is cheaper and reduces our energy usage and emissions.

When is Earth Day 2024? How the day raises awareness about climate change, our environment

Earth day started over 50 years ago, on april 22, 1970, and the celebrations are still going strong..

environment week essay

Earth Day is today. But what does the day even mean? Here's what you need to know about the annual commemoration and how to celebrate our planet while fighting climate change .

"For me, every day is Earth Day," Leila Yassine, Rainforest Alliance's global advocacy engagement manager, told USA TODAY. "But I think it's really important to have this Earth Day as a yearly wake-up call for everyone."

She goes on to say that the day itself brings attention to organizations that are working to bring attention to climate change and what folks can do to help the Earth recover.

Earth Day 2024: In honor of Earth Day, today's Google Doodle takes us on a trip around the world

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day falls on April 22 every year. This year, however, it falls on a Monday and shares the date with the start of the Jewish holiday, Passover.

The day has been celebrated for over 50 years, but isn't federally recognized, as previously reported by USA TODAY .

Why do we celebrate Earth Day?

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 when 20 million people went to inaugural events at schools, universities and other public areas around the country, according to the Library of Congress's website .

Senator Gaylord Nelson advocated for Earth Day and called on "students to fight for environmental causes and oppose environmental degradation with the same energy that they displayed in opposing the Vietnam War," states the library.

Then, the library adds, in July of 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency was created after the public demanded cleaner water, air and land as more disasters caused by climate change and pollution impacted the country.

How can we celebrate Earth Day 2024?

Yassine said her favorite way to celebrate Earth Day is by taking a walk through nature.

"It just reminds us how the earth is beautiful and how nature is powerful," said Yassine. "So I think for me this is a way of celebrating Earth Day."

But, she adds that it isn't the only way to celebrate Earth Day, and there are simple things folks can do, too.

She said people can do something as small as going to the grocery store and buying sustainable produce.

Since Earth Day falls on a Monday, it can also be celebrated by participating in Meatless Monday. The movement, according to its website, was started in 2003 by Sid Lerner, with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. It aimed to reduce the amount of meat in one's diet to improve health and the health of the planet.

According to a study published by the National Library of Medicine , a more plant-based diet would not only improve environmental health, but human health too.

But, if that's not your cup of tea, there's always the option to go to a local park, beach clean-up or attend an Earth Day event in your area.

"Everyday actions count," said Yassine. "Fighting climate change doesn't always require that we have ground-breaking innovation or technology."

Folks can also research news regarding climate change and the work that needs to be done. But, Yassine says it's important to look at positive news regarding the situation, too.

Have a positive outlook on Earth Day 2024

According to Yassine, sharing positive news about the climate crisis and avoiding doom-scrolling on social media can encourage others to tackle the issue and keep folks optimistic about the future of the climate crisis.

No matter how one chooses to celebrate Earth Day or fight against climate change, Yassine said it's important to stay positive about the future.

"Share ideas and this will really cultivate collective optimism," she said. "It's like you have little seeds and then you're feeding it. You're feeding it until gives you this beautiful tree of hope."

U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) sites across the country are taking steps to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce their carbon footprints. EM sites are implementing new water and energy conservation measures, installing onsite renewable energy systems and updating vehicle fleets with 300 electric and hybrid vehicles already purchased. The world's largest environmental cleanup remains committed to further reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy use at cleanup sites. EM also supports measures to improve efficiency among its sites using LED lighting and more efficient heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and electronics, all while encouraging sustainability within the workforce and supply chains.

West Valley Team Members Present Photos Representing World's Beauty

In celebration of Earth Day, U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) employees and contractors submitted their best photos depicting the beauty and magnificence of the world for a contest. Photos fall under one of four categories: wildlife, scenery, foliage, and sustainability projects or activities. The submitted photos are displayed onsite and at the Ashford Office Complex for team members to view and vote for their favorite photo. West Valley will award a trophy to the winner in each category following the voting period, which ends April 30. “This Earth Day activity helps create awareness of nature’s beauty and reinforces the importance of environmental stewardship for everyone,” said Julie Sansone, environmental engineer with CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, EM’s cleanup contractor at West Valley.

Additionally, students from local high schools compete in the 2024 Cattaraugus County Envirothon this Wednesday with support from WVDP. The Envirothon is an outdoor, hands-on environmental competition that emphasizes teamwork while testing students’ knowledge in aquatic ecology, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife, and a current environmental issue topic, which this year is renewable energy for a sustainable future. Teams work together to complete exams at different stations, identifying various species of trees, wildlife and fish on display, and answer questions about habitat and other environmental related issues. A presentation on the current issue topic is rated as part of each team’s score. The Envirothon competition encourages student interest in the environment and reinforces the importance of protecting natural resources. Scores for the five exams are totaled, and the team with the highest cumulative total wins the competition.

The One Hanford team is all about cleanup. In honor of Earth Day, a group of employee volunteers recently spent their free time giving back to the community and cleaning up a local park. The team expressed pride for its contribution to cleanup progress at the Hanford Site and surrounding community.

In honor of Earth Day, members of the Green Team for U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management Paducah Site infrastructure contractor Swift & Staley Inc. set up collection points across the site to recycle plastic. The group collected approximately 50 pounds of plastic items for recycling. Those who brought items were rewarded with reusable bags for their efforts and to educate others on further recycling opportunities.

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the Savannah River Site (SRS) liquid waste contractor, celebrated Earth Day by participating in a local Earth Day event. Several SRMC employees from the Environmental Compliance and Operational & Informational Technology groups participated in the city of Aiken, South Carolina, Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 20. The SRMC exhibit appealed to all audiences from K-12 to adults and featured an interactive robot, games, and information about the meaningful cleanup work that SRMC performs to achieve its tank waste cleanup mission for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management. SRNL volunteers helped students create clouds in a bottle by mimicking the part of Earth’s water cycle in which evaporated water, or water vapor, cools and condenses, forming clouds as they connect with dust. In the experiment, alcohol acts like the dust, providing something cool for water droplets to attach to. When students pressurized the soda bottle by pumping air in, the air molecules collided with each other and warmed the bottle. Releasing the pressure causes the water vapor to condense quickly, forming a cloud.

NPR editor Uri Berliner resigns with blast at new CEO

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

NPR names tech executive Katherine Maher to lead in turbulent era

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.

She said in a text message earlier this week that that initiative had been discussed long before Berliner's essay, but "Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it."

She added, "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."
