What should you know before planning a trip to Cameron Highlands?

Whether you’ve only got one day or 3 days to spare, having an itinerary to fall on will benefit you in more ways than one. Take it from us as we’ve been to Cameron Highlands countless times.

Read this post if you want to know when to go, how to go and where to stay. As well as how long to stay! And it doesn’t hurt to have some handy travel tips in your arsenal before you go.

Main Highlights Of Visiting Cameron Highlands

When you’re in Cameron Highlands, there’s  no need to rush  from one attraction to the next!

The point of it all is to take your time and appreciate the natural beauty around you!

View Of Boh Sungai Palas Tea Plantation Before The Entering The Plantation

  • Visit a Cameron Highlands tea plantation
  • Pick strawberries at a strawberry farm
  • Stroll through Lavender Garden (we do prefer the newer attractions like Agro Market over this one)
  • Visit a local market like Brinchang Night Market or Kea Farm Market
  • Admire how big flowers get in a  rose garden

Large Rose At O&R Garden

  • See plenty of cacti – maybe buy a couple
  • Enjoy British cream tea at a colonial-style tea house
  • Do some hiking (e.g. mossy forest, Gunung Brinchang, Robinson Falls, Gunung Jasar etc)
  • Have a steamboat meal

And if you run out of things to do in Cameron Highlands , don’t fret! There’s more that we did not cover in this post!

Our Suggested Cameron Highlands Itineraries

Unless you plan to do some serious hiking or visit Brinchang Night Market :

You can cover most of the main highlights in Cameron Highlands in one day! Provided that the weather behaves, and that traffic is not too crazy.

Cameron Highlands Golden Hills Weekend Night Market On A Rainy Day

The peak time for most attractions seems to be 10am to 12pm. At the same time, you should avoid passing back and forth through Kea Farm to save yourself the trouble of getting through the traffic again.

It really pays to plan your route carefully before starting on your journey. Check Waze too before you begin your journey. You never know when a tree or landslide is holding up the traffic!

Classic Itinerary (Great For Families Too)

This is a  classic  itinerary for  first timers  to Cameron Highlands! The order in which you see these attractions depends on your priority and how much you detest being stuck in traffic.

This itinerary assumes that you are making a day trip from Ipoh.

BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre Has Hilltop Views

  • Have an early morning local breakfast at a kopitiam or dim sum restaurant in Ipoh

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands in Pahang is the biggest and arguably the best highland resort in Malaysia.  Popular amongst both locals and tourists, it provides a cool respite from the sweltering heat of the lowlands.    The sprawling lush valleys about the size Singapore has much to offer nature lovers.  My family stayed 2 nights in Cameron Highlands and did a full day local tour of the beautiful countryside.  We visited  tea plantations , strawberry farms , Rose Valley , Lavender Garden , Bee and Butterfly farms, the Brinchang night market and more.  Here are 10 places to visit or things to do in Cameron Highlands .

1.  Tea Plantations

Visiting a tea plantation is the top thing to do in Cameron Highlands .  We visited the Sungai Palas Boh Tea Plantation  which offered an educational tour of the tea factory.

Boh-Tea-Factory Sungai Palas Cameron Highlands

No visit to a tea plantation is complete without sipping a cup of tea while enjoying the view of the plantation.  We had a lovely English-style breakfast with aromatic tea, scones and pastries at the Boh Tea Centre at Sungai Palas.

Boh Tea Sungai Palas Cameron Highlands

Here is a better view of the stunning vistas of rolling hills where the tea plantations are tendered.  Did you know that  Cameron Highlands  got its name from a British surveyor called William Cameron back in the 1800s?

Boh Tea Sungai Palas Cameron Highlands

It is also worth exploring the scenery just outside the Boh Tea Centre .

Boh Tea Sungai Palas Cameron Highlands

There was another Boh Tea plantation in Cameron Highlands which was further away from other attractions and where you have to traverse a windy road to get there. Definitely not suitable for my kids who would throw up or get a headache.  Apart from Boh Tea,  there were two other tea plantations  in Cameron Highlands – Cameron Valley and Bharat tea plantations . Both had tea cafés overlooking the plantation and stores to buy tea as souvenirs.  I especially liked the strawberry tea from the Cameron Valley tea plantation , pictured below.   Cameron Valley tea plantation was the easiest to get to, although the carpark was rather small.

Bharat Tea plantation Cameron Highlands

2. Strawberry Farms

3. Rose Valley

Located at Kea Farm, a short distance from the Sungei Palas Tea Plantation , the Rose Valley is filled with more than 100 variety of roses and other types of flowers. The Rose Valley is perched on slopes along a small hill. Flower lovers would enjoy the Rose Valley .

Rose Valley, Cameron Highlands

4.  Cameron Lavender Garden

More flowers bloomed at the Cameron Lavender Garden .  As we entered the garden, we saw a sea of purple, red and yellow flowers sheltered under a large canopy.

Lavender Garden, Cameron Highlands

On the higher slopes,  there were rows and rows of gerberas in all sorts of colours.  Visitors could also pick strawberries there.

5. Vegetable Farms

Our local day tour also brought us to visit the Watercress Valley , and a local vegetable farm that grew tomatoes and cauliflowers.

 Watercress Valley Cameron Highlands

6. Bee and Butterfly Farms

Apart from flowers and vegetables, Cameron Highlands also has Bee Farms and the Butterfly Farms .  See more pictures of the beautiful butterflies and bees here –   Cameron Highlands Bee and Butterfly Farm .

Cameron Highlands Butterfly Farm

7. Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel

The Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel is a local museum with lots of vintage items and memorabilia.   At first, I didn’t think we would enjoy the Time Tunnel much, but to my surprise it was actually quite educational for the kids.  My trio kept asking “What’s this?”, “How does it work?” or “Why?”  There were also things that I haven’t seen for ages and have totally forgotten about them, like the old light switches.  The Time Tunnel even had a photo of Singapore’s father and son PM,

8. Sunrise on Gunung Brinchang & Mossy Forest

Something really worth doing while in Cameron Highlands  is waking up at around 4.30am, drive up to the top of Gunung Brinchang , climb up a watch tower with the cool crisp wind blowing at your face, and wait patiently while the sun reveals itself and the spectacular scenery.   Read more .

9.  Brinchang Night Market (Pasar Malam)

We went to the  Brinchang night market  (locally known as “Pasar malam”) near Star Regency Hotel.  It normally opens on Fridays and Saturdays but during Malaysian school holidays, it opens every night.  Local produce like  strawberries, vegetables, and fruits were sold in abundance at the night market.  There were also many stores selling vegetable fritters, crab fritters and prawn fritters. One thing to try was the corn with the white kernels.  The white corns could be eaten raw and surprisingly, it was sweet!  Apart from food, there were lots of value-for-money stuff and souvenirs on sale.  If you are driving, you need to go there early to find parking.

Cameron Highlands Brinchang Night Market

10.   Enjoy the local delights

Apart from the food at the  Brinchang night market , steamboat restaurants seem to be quite a hit in  Cameron Highlands .  We only ate at the steamboat restaurant once, though.  Most of the time, we ate the local food fare there.  Our favourite was Nolina food.  The food was cheap and good.   Try the blue nasi lemak with sambal chicken.  Nolina Food was just 5 minutes from Copthorne Hotel at the bend towards the direction of Ipoh.

Tips on visiting Cameron Highlands

  • If you are coming from the North-South highway, drive up from Ipoh instead of from Tapah.  The road from Ipoh is less windy than the one from Tapah.
  • Don’t plan on visiting the Sungai Palas Tea Plantation on Monday because they are closed.
  • Do consider joining local tours, especially to the Boh tea plantations and Gunung Brinchang, if you are not comfortable driving or if you don’t want to risk damaging your car.  The road was too narrow for bi-directional traffic.  Other attractions were easier to drive to.  I joined the local tour CS Travel and Tours which I booked from the Hotel travel desk  www.cstravel.com.my .
  • Don’t plan on going strawberry picking in the afternoon, especially after other tour buses have come and gone.  There won’t be much red and juicy strawberries to pick.  Try going for one which only opens on certain days a week (e.g. Thursday-Sunday). Go on the first day and first hour of the opening to get the best pick of strawberries.  I went to the one just outside Copthorne Hotel on Thursday morning when they just opened for the day and got the best pick of plump and juicy strawberries.
  • Copthorne Hotel (formerly known as Equatorial Hotel) – It has 2 and 3 bedrooms with terrific view of the sunrise
  • Strawberry Park Resort – It has family suites for up to 6 guests
  • Other Cameron Highlands accommodations

We also went to enjoy the hot springs at the  Lost World of Tambun, Ipoh, Malaysia  before going to Cameron Highlands.

I really miss the cool weather of Cameron and having tea and scones at the Sungai Palas Tea House

HJ

Did you guys join a local tour or hired a driver for the day to cover all these places?

If its a local tour, what is the name of the travel agency?

Rosie

Hi HJ, We joined a local agricultural tour which we booked through the Hotel Travel Desk. The tour company is called CS Travel and Tours and their website is http://www.cstravel.com.my . They have different types of tours around Cameron Highlands, with some more adventurous than others.

Cheryl

Thanks for the wonderful tips!

1. May I know did you join a full or half day tour with CS Travel and Tours?

2. If it’s half day, what time did it start and end?

3. Do they pick you up from your hotel? If yes, which hotel? Or is there a specific meeting place you have to be at?

I’m planning to visit Cameron Highlands later this year, trying to see if I can join a local half day tour in the morning. Thanks for your help!

Hi Cheryl, I booked two back-to-back half-day tours with CS Travel with our own lunch in between. The morning tour starts at around 8.30am and ends around 12-1pm. the afternoon tour starts at 2.00pm. The tour guide picked us up from our hotel. At that time the hotel was known as Equatorial Hotel, now it is called Copthorne Hotel.

Marcus

May I know does the Pasar Malam in Cameron Highland open on Sunday also ? This is our first time to visit Cameron and we want to avoid the crowd during weekend and school holiday. Does Sunday too crowded and does road will have heavy traffic jam ?

We plan to visit on 28-Jun-15(Sun) to 30-Jun-15(Tue) and we around 18 ppl (13 adults and 5 small kids). Is there any recommended apartment or homestay or resort for such a big family ?

Hi Marcus. The Pasar malam only opens on Fridays and Saturdays. There are accommodations for 13 people, however, now they are already booked. You can find accommodate your group in two 3-bedroom apartments. Check out the available listings here – Cameron Highlands.

Myka

Hi! I have read the comments and also checked the CS Travel and Tours website. May I ask if a half day tour would be enough? Our stay is limited for one day and we want to go back to Kuala Lumpur by evening. Could you help us suggest alternatives if there is any? Thank you so much!

Hi Myka, The tours are mostly half days. The most popular one is the one that goes to the tea plantation. I would choose that if you can only spare half a day.

Lex

This is my first time travelling to Cameron Highland via Singapore. How do you move around from the hotel to night market and different attractions? Is there taxi services? I look through Google map and I think the places are far from Copthorne Hotel. Please advise. Many Thanks!

Hi Alex, we joined a local tour to bring us around the attractions, including the night market. Within walking distance of Copthorne Hotel, there is a strawberry farm and also a number of shops.

Thank you very much for your updates! How about walking from Copthorne Hotel to the night market at the shopping areas at Tanah Raja? Is it walking distance? Many Thanks!

Hi Lex, Copthorne Hotel is in Brinchang, whereas Tanah Rata is another area about 20 minutes away by car. It is too far to walk. However, if you are referring to the Brinchang town, it is possible to walk, but if I recall, it may be up the hill.

Timothy

How do you get to Cameron Highland from Singapore? By driving a car or taking a coach? Many thanks.

Hi Timothy, we drove, but not directly from Singapore. We stayed at Ipoh’s Lost World of Tambun before driving up to Cameron Highlands. On the way back, we stayed in Malacca before driving back to Singapore.

Jackie

Nice write-up and great pictures! I wrote about some beautiful places in Cameron where you can take awesome pictures. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments. 😀 Best Places To Take Pictures In Cameron Highlands Take care and cheers!

hi, any suggestions for car rentals from Ipoh? we are coming from SIN-IPOH. from there how to go to IPOH. any idea?

Hi, you might want to try online car rental companies or Expedia which will search through several car rental companies for you. The link to Expedia is to the right or bottom of this page.

Essay_an education trip to cameron highlands.

These are three essays I copied from other websites for your reference.

An Educational Trip to Cameron Highlands

On 21 June 2010, the Geographical Society of our school made an educational trip to Cameron Highlands. Thirty students/ members of the society accompanied by four teachers went on the trip. We set off at 6.30 am by coach and reached there at 9.00 am sharp.

The main purpose of the trip was to enable the members of the society to study nature and build better rapport among them. In addition, the students would be able to gain first hand knowledge on what they have learned in their Geography lessons. This would enable them to understand their lessons better.

The weather there was cool and refreshing. All the way up the hill, we saw beautiful lush greenery on the hill slopes. Our first stop was at a huge rose garden, probably one of the best in our country. Many varieties of roses were planted there. It was a fascinating sight to see shades of red, pink, yellow and orange roses swaying gently the breeze! There, we observed the workers working in the farm. Some were aerating the soil; while others were watering and trimming the plants.

After the rose garden, we visited a large tea plantation. There we saw vast areas of green tea shrubs growing on the hill slopes. The scenery was beautiful and refreshing! We witnessed women workers plucking young tea leaves with their nimble fingers, throwing them into the baskets strapped on their backs.

At 6.00 p.m. we headed home. We found the trip educational and beneficial. The members saw for themselves highland features such as hills and waterfalls and the co-relation between the cool climate and the economic activities.

How much does an essay cost?

Starting your search for an agency, you need to carefully study the services of each option. There are a lot of specialists in this area, so prices vary in a wide range. But you need to remember that the quality of work directly depends on the cost. Decide immediately what is more important to you - financial savings or the result.

Companies always indicate how much 1000 characters of text costs, so that the client understands what price to expect and whether it is worth continuing to cooperate.

At Essayswriting, it all depends on the timeline you put in it. Professional authors can write an essay in 3 hours, if there is a certain volume, but it must be borne in mind that with such a service the price will be the highest. The cheapest estimate is the work that needs to be done in 14 days. Then 275 words will cost you $ 10, while 3 hours will cost you $ 50. Please, take into consideration that VAT tax is totally included in the mentioned prices. The tax will be charged only from EU customers.

When choosing an agency, try to pay more attention to the level of professionalism, and then evaluate the high cost of work.

Election Updates: Trump’s first criminal trial begins and Biden and Harris hit the trail.

Former President Donald J. Trump gesturing in a dark suit.

Vice President Kamala Harris attacked Donald Trump at her second stop of the day in Las Vegas, an abortion-focused campaign event. She tied him to the ruling last week from the Arizona Supreme Court that upheld a near-total abortion ban from 1864. “When he sits back and most recently says, ‘Well, I believe that the states should make these decisions,’ OK. So you believe that the states have a right to reinstate laws from the 1800s.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is in Las Vegas today for a White House event on gun violence and a campaign event later this afternoon. At the White House event, held at a high school campus, she played up the Biden administration’s recent expansion of background checks for people who buy guns at gun shows, which is likely to face legal challenges. “We do see progress, and therefore we cannot give up,” she said.

Jason Palmer, the obscure Democratic presidential candidate who briefly caught national attention last month when he tied President Biden in the caucuses in American Samoa, said on Monday that he was endorsing Biden. “I’m proud to endorse Joe Biden as the leader of our Democratic Party and plan to campaign vigorously for his re-election,” Palmer said on social media.

The Biden campaign generally does not directly address Donald Trump’s trials. But on X, an official campaign account highlighted Trump appearing to fall asleep during his appearance in a Manhattan courtroom today. Trump has referred to Biden as Sleepy Joe.

Today is a quarterly filing deadline for the Federal Election Commission, which means that we will see fund-raising and spending numbers from the joint fund-raising committees for President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump. Those are the primary vessels through which these candidates raise cash, so this will provide a lot more detail on the overall sums their campaigns have been reporting.

A little over a month after ending her presidential campaign, Nikki Haley has her next job: The Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank, announced on Monday that she would be its next Walter P. Stern chair.

Ruben Gallego, Democrats’ likely nominee for Senate in Arizona, is running an ad highlighting how his likely Republican opponent, Kari Lake, spoke about abortion while running for governor in 2022 — very differently than she does now . “We have a great law on the books,” it shows her saying of an 1864 abortion ban. When the Arizona Supreme Court upheld that ban last week, she criticized the decision.

Reporting from Washington

Biden and his allies are likely to stay quiet on Trump’s Manhattan trial.

As former President Donald J. Trump goes on trial on Monday in Manhattan, President Biden and his allies are not likely to say much.

For Democrats, a former president facing criminal charges over covering up a sex scandal surrounding the 2016 campaign speaks for itself. The media coverage will be constant, especially if Mr. Trump takes the stand, which he has floated as a possibility. And while Mr. Trump faces up to eight weeks in court, Mr. Biden will be on the campaign trail and employing a “Rose Garden strategy” as he governs from the White House, a contrast that the president’s aides hope voters will view favorably.

The approach could be bolstered by the fact that Mr. Trump will be appearing in a court case involving salacious details and questionable financial maneuverings while Mr. Biden is addressing a conflict in the Middle East.

Mr. Biden and his campaign have said nothing publicly about the criminal indictments against Mr. Trump, worried about improperly influencing the cases or stoking Mr. Trump’s repeated allegations — made without evidence — that Mr. Biden has engineered the charges.

Many of the deep-pocketed outside Democratic groups supporting the Biden campaign are charting a similar path. Part of their calculation, they say, is that ads promoting Mr. Biden’s record or arguing that Mr. Trump is a threat to democracy are testing better with voters than highlighting Mr. Trump’s legal troubles. Another consideration is that the Manhattan case, which is being brought by the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, is not easily explained in a sound bite or a 30-second ad.

“I just don’t think in the end it’s the strongest argument for voters,” said Steve Schale, a Democratic strategist running a pro-Biden super PAC called Unite the Country. “Campaigns have limited resources and you spend those resources in a way that moves the most votes.”

Mr. Schale’s group is planning to spend roughly $40 million later this spring on an ad campaign in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin focused on Mr. Biden’s accomplishments and attacking Mr. Trump for being anti-democratic.

The Biden campaign declined to comment on its strategy and the main pro-Biden super PAC, Future Forward, did not respond to a request for comment. Nor did a spokesman for Mr. Trump’s campaign.

When Mr. Trump goes on trial on Monday, he will be the first U.S. president to face criminal prosecution. He stands accused of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels, the former adult film star, as part of an effort to influence the 2016 election. The case is one of four criminal indictments he faces , although it may be the only one that reaches trial before Election Day. Mr. Trump has denied guilt in them all.

“Two days from now, the entire world will witness the commencement of the very first Biden trial,” Mr. Trump said at a rally in eastern Pennsylvania on Saturday night, baselessly implying that the president had engineered the charges.

The other argument for the Biden campaign and affiliated groups to focus elsewhere is that there doesn’t appear to be much voter interest in the proceedings. A New York Times/Siena College poll found that just one-quarter of voters said they were paying “a lot” of attention to Mr. Trump’s legal cases. Other polls have shown that voters consider this case the least serious of the indictments against Mr. Trump.

That said, Democratic groups certainly won’t ignore the trial. Those that specialize in “rapid response” communications plan to monitor Mr. Trump’s behavior in court and at his frequent post-court news conferences and deliver their messages on social media.

“Whenever we see Trump in court, he’s one of the worst and most undisciplined versions of himself,” said Brandon Weathersby, a spokesman for the liberal opposition research group American Bridge. “He’s combative with the judges, prosecutors, members of the press. He’ll toss out rants on social media during court proceedings. And so for us, we think that our job in all of this is to highlight those moments for voters to kind of cut through the noise.”

Meanwhile, as Mr. Trump sits in court this week, Mr. Biden will campaign in his hometown, Scranton, Pa., on Tuesday, with stops in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Thursday. That is the kind of split screen that Democrats believe will favor them.

There is, of course, no guarantee that Mr. Biden won’t be tempted into popping off about the trial as he interacts with voters and the news media. The president has never been viewed as the most disciplined campaigner.

And Democrats could change their calculations about the wisdom of highlighting Mr. Trump’s legal troubles if he should be convicted in the Manhattan case. Some polling shows that swing-state voters could be moved if Mr. Trump heads into Election Day as a felon.

The federal election interference case against Mr. Trump over his efforts to retain power, known as the Jan. 6 case, could also shift how Democrats approach the issue, if it goes to trial. That case is seen as the most directly illustrative of the Democratic argument that Mr. Trump is a threat to democracy.

But for now, many Democrats believe the frequent presence of Mr. Trump in a Manhattan courtroom will do their work for them.

“The Republican Party right now is led by the most extreme members of the party and they’re led by Donald Trump,” said Representative Suzan DelBene, of Washington, the head of the campaign arm of the House Democrats. “The trial reinforces the extremism and who’s in charge of the Republican Party right now.”

Lisa Lerer , Ruth Igielnik and Michael Gold contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll. It found that one-quarter of voters said they were paying “a lot” of attention to Mr. Trump’s legal cases broadly, not only to his case in Manhattan.

How we handle corrections

Under pressure from Trump, Arizona Republicans weigh a response to the state’s 1864 abortion ban.

Facing mounting pressure to strike down a near-total abortion ban revived last week by Arizona’s Supreme Court, Republican state legislators are considering efforts to undermine a planned ballot measure this fall that would enshrine abortion rights in the Arizona Constitution, according to a presentation obtained by The New York Times.

The 1864 law that is set to take effect in the coming weeks bans nearly all abortions and mandates prison sentences of two to five years for providing abortion care. The proposed ballot measure on abortion rights, known as the Arizona Abortion Access Act, would enshrine the right to an abortion before viability , or about 24 weeks. Supporters of the measure say they have already gathered enough signatures to put the question on the ballot ahead of a July 3 filing deadline.

Republicans in the Legislature are under tremendous pressure to overturn, or at least amend, the 1864 ban. Former President Donald J. Trump, the national standard-bearer of the Republican Party, directly intervened on Friday, calling on Republican legislators, in a frantically worded post online, to “act immediately” to change the law. A top Trump ally in Arizona who is running for the Senate, Kari Lake, has also called for the overturning of the 1864 law , which she had once praised.

Abortion rights have been a winning message for Democrats since the Supreme Court, with three justices appointed by Mr. Trump, overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. And even though it is an objectively unpopular aspect of his White House legacy, Mr. Trump has repeatedly bragged that he is personally responsible for overturning Roe.

Republicans in Arizona, however, have already resisted efforts to repeal the 160-year-old law and are bracing for the potential for another floor battle on the ban that is looming for the Legislature, which is set to convene on Wednesday. The plans that circulated among Republican legislators suggest the caucus is considering other measures that would turn attention away from the 1864 law.

The presentation to Republican state legislators, written by Linley Wilson, the general counsel for the Republican majority in the Arizona State Legislature, proposed several ways in which the Republican-controlled Legislature could undermine the ballot measure, known as A.A.A., by placing competing constitutional amendments on the ballot that would limit the right to abortion even if the proposed ballot measure succeeded.

The plan, the document said, “Changes narrative — Republicans have a plan!” adding that the plan “puts Democrats in a defensive position to argue against partial birth abortions, discriminatory abortions, and other basic protections.”

One proposal would have the Legislature send to voters two other ballot initiatives that would “conflict with” and “pull votes from” the A.A.A. ballot measure. Ballot measures for a constitutional amendment can be proposed through a petition, as with the A.A.A. ballot measure, or through the State Legislature , and the document suggests that voters could read the Republican ballot measures first on the ballot if they are filed before the A.A.A. ballot measure.

One of the Republican ballot initiatives outlined in the presentation would enact an abortion ban after the fifth week of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest and medical necessity. The other ballot option would propose a ban after the 14th week of pregnancy. The language of the measures would be intentionally written to mislead voters on when exactly an abortion would become illegal, according to the presentation.

The second option, for example, would be known as the “Fifteen Week Reproductive Care and Abortion Act.” But “in reality,” according to the presentation, “It’s a 14-week law disguised as a 15-week law because it would only allow abortion until the beginning of the 15th week.” Similarly, the wording of the five-week abortion ban would make abortion illegal “after the sixth week of pregnancy begins.”

An alternative to those two options would be to put forward a ballot measure that would take effect only if the A.A.A. ballot measure also passes. That plan, known as “conditional enactment,” would insert language in the state Constitution declaring that the right to an abortion in the A.A.A. ballot measure “is not absolute and shall not be interpreted to prevent the Legislature from” regulating abortion in the future. It would also include language used by anti-abortion activists, referring to “the preservation of prenatal life” and “mitigation of fetal pain.”

Ben Toma, the speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, confirmed the authenticity of the document and said in a statement that it “presents ideas drafted for internal discussion and consideration within the caucus. I’ve publicly stated that we are looking at options to address this subject, and this is simply part of that.”

State Senator Anna Hernandez said in a statement that she and fellow Democrats would continue to push to repeal the 1864 law and that the Republicans’ proposals were “intentionally drafted to confuse voters” with policies “based in arbitrary numbers of weeks that have no factual grounding in science or health care.”

Dawn Penich, a spokeswoman for Arizona for Abortion Access, the liberal coalition organizing the A.A.A. ballot measure, said in a statement that the Republican presentation “shows yet again why Arizonans can’t leave our most basic and personal rights in the hands of politicians.”

Kate Zernike contributed reporting from New York.

The split-screen campaign: Trump on trial, and Biden on the trail.

Welcome to the split-screen campaign.

President Biden is navigating an international crisis after Iran launched a retaliatory attack on Israel over the weekend. But he also has a fairly normal week of campaigning scheduled. He is set to be in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, making stops in Scranton, the Pittsburgh area and Philadelphia.

Former President Donald J. Trump, on the other hand, will have a decidedly abnormal campaign week: Having already become the first former U.S. president to be indicted, he is about to become the first to stand trial on criminal charges. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Monday in his Manhattan criminal case, which involves accusations that he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal during the 2016 presidential campaign.

You can follow those proceedings here.

The trial could keep Mr. Trump in New York City and off the campaign trail for as many as four days a week for two months.

With the trail largely to himself, Mr. Biden may try to keep voters’ attention on abortion, which dominated the news last week. Almost immediately after Mr. Trump said that states should be able to decide abortion policies, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a 160-year-old abortion ban — underscoring the concrete results of letting states decide, which they can do because the judges Mr. Trump appointed to the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade.

That will be one of Vice President Kamala Harris’s focuses on a campaign stop on Monday in Las Vegas, where she will attend what the White House described as “a reproductive freedoms organizing event.” Abortion-rights advocates in Nevada are collecting signatures for a constitutional amendment that would guarantee abortion access in the state.

Mr. Biden is not, however, likely to say much about the Trump proceedings, hoping a contrast between one candidate’s defending himself in court and another’s governing and traveling the country will resonate.

The trappings of a typical campaign year will also play out with a campaign-finance deadline on Monday, the last day for campaigns and political action committees to report how much money they raised and spent in the first three months of 2024.

Sununu says Trump ‘contributed’ to an insurrection, but will still have his support.

Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire said on Sunday that former President Donald J. Trump “absolutely contributed” to an insurrection and that Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election were “absolutely terrible” — but that nothing, not even felony convictions, would stop him from voting for Mr. Trump because the economy, border security and “culture change” were more important.

The interview, on ABC News’s “This Week,” showcased Mr. Sununu’s transformation from Trump critic — while supporting Nikki Haley in the Republican primary, he said Mr. Trump was “ worried about jail time ” and “ not a real Republican ” — to loyal foot soldier.

It is a transformation that has repeated itself time and again within the Republican Party, and one that Mr. Sununu previewed in January, when he was campaigning for Ms. Haley but said he would support Mr. Trump if he won the nomination.

“No one should be surprised by my support,” he said on Sunday. “I think the real discussion is, you know, Americans moving away from Biden. That’s how bad Biden has become as president. There’s just no doubt about it, right? You can’t ignore inflation. You can’t ignore the border and say that these issues in the courthouse are going to be the one thing that brings Biden back into office.”

The interviewer, George Stephanopoulos, pressed Mr. Sununu on why he was supporting a man who he said had “contributed to the insurrection” on Jan. 6.

Mr. Sununu affirmed that he still believed that. But he said it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a Republican governor would support a Republican nominee, and suggested that Mr. Stephanopoulos was out of touch with public opinion if he thought concerns about democracy or felony convictions would sway voters.

“You believe that a president who contributed to an insurrection should be president again?” Mr. Stephanopoulos asked.

“As does 51 percent of America, George,” Mr. Sununu said. “I mean, really. I understand you’re part of the media, I understand you’re in this New York City bubble or whatever it is, but you got to look around what’s happening across this country.”

He went on: “It’s not about just supporting Trump. It’s getting rid of what we have today. It’s about understanding inflation is crushing families. It’s understanding that this border issue is not a Texas issue, it’s a 50-state issue that has to be brought under control. It’s about that type of elitism that the average American is just sick and tired of, and it’s a culture change. That’s what I’m supporting.”

Inflation has declined sharply from its 2022 peak, but was higher than expected in a report released last week .

Mr. Sununu said that Americans’ desire for “culture change,” a phrase he used eight times but did not concretely define, outweighed concerns about Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election or the four criminal trials he faces, the first of which begins this week.

While Mr. Trump as the Republican nominee wasn’t what he wanted, “we’ll take it if we have to,” Mr. Sununu said. “That’s how badly America wants a culture change.”

Mr. Stephanopoulos pushed back once more.

“So just to sum up, you would support him for president even if he was convicted in classified documents,” he said. “You support him for president even though you believe he contributed to an insurrection. You support him for president even though you believe he’s lying about the last election. You’d support him for president even if he’s convicted in the Manhattan case. I just want to say, the answer to that is yes, correct?”

“Yeah,” Mr. Sununu said. “Me and 51 percent of America.”
