‘Close to You’ Review: Elliot Page Makes an Affecting Big-Screen Return in a Fragile Homecoming Drama

In his first male film role, the actor brings palpable personal investment and empathy to director Dominic Savage's study of a strained family reunion.

Close to You

British director Savage is known for his improvisatory collaborations with actors, which recently drew career-best work from Gemma Arterton in the 2017 feature “The Escape,” and extended to the TV project “I Am…,” a series of intimate standalone character portraits by the likes of Samantha Morton, Letitia Wright and a BAFTA-winning Kate Winslet. Crossing over to Canada to work with Page on his home turf, the director’s technique once again gives his star ample leeway to explore himself on screen, in the process capturing something that feels truthful, however fictionally constructed. That sense of raw integrity has stood the film in good stead on the festival circuit, attracting particular interest from LGBT-oriented programmers and distributors, since its buzzy Toronto premiere last fall, shortly after the publication of Page’s memoir “Pageboy.”

Dramatically, however, improv yields mixed rewards in “Close to You,” which bounces between scenes that are finely detailed in their examination of open prejudice and subtler microaggressions in the family sphere, and others that are more vaguely essayed, building relationships on backstories that don’t yet feel fully formed. From-the-gut acting, not just by Page but a fine ensemble of Canuck character players, carries the film across the line, though even at a modest 98 minutes, it could feel tighter.

Sure enough, the reunion begins amicably but never quite comfortably, the mood aptly set by DP Catherine Lutes’ frosty, dun-hued lensing of the family home’s low-lit, timber-heavy interiors. Sam’s mother Miriam (a wonderful Wendy Crewson) is eager to make up for lost time, offering effusive affection but trying too hard: When she absentmindedly uses the wrong pronouns, her apologies put Sam in the position of comforting her. Dad Jim (Peter Outerbridge) is more relaxed, content simply to see his once severely withdrawn child leading a productive, independent life; Sam’s older sisters are more passive-aggressive, almost reproachful in their persistent enquiries as to his happiness.

“You weren’t this worried about me when I was actually not okay,” Sam responds, in one of the film’s most cutting lines — a sentiment that lays the groundwork for a more heated familial dispute in response to the less politely disguised transphobia of his brother-in-law Paul (David Reale). This scene serves as the film’s centerpiece, bringing any number of latent conflicts collectively to the surface, though there is an air of contrivance, workshopping even, to its heavily pointed rhetoric.

Counteracting this tension is the separate, gentler subplot of Sam’s unexpected reconnection with former high-school BFF Katherine (Hillary Baack), now a married suburban mother with clear yearnings for something more. They meet by chance on the train from Toronto, later reuniting in town for a heart to heart. In contrast to the trickier tacit negotiations with his family, Katherine’s acceptance of his new identity is unquestioning and unconditional (“You look the same, just more you,” she tenderly observes), and realigned desire is stirred between them.

This tentative romance is poignant, but timidly approached: Katherine never comes fully into focus as a character outside her relationship to Sam, which itself is drawn in soft pastel strokes, while the sparse piano and sorrowful strings of the score (composed by Savage with Oliver Coates) is called on to fill in some emotional blanks. The stories of a brittle family fallout and a second-chance spark don’t entirely mesh together, though they afford Page a full spectrum of feeling to play: hard and soft, guarded and unbound, combative and seductive. For any viewers who have lost touch with the star, it’s a happy reacquaintance.

What happened to blue-sky thinking? … Shakira.

Shakira: Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran review – revenge served disappointingly tepid

(RCA) Despite a hit diss track so withering it affected the stock market and enlivening turns from Cardi B and leading regional Mexican musicians, the Colombian’s wan 12th album washes out her adventurous spirit

T he cover of Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran features a closeup shot of Shakira crying, her tears turning into diamonds as they run down her face. It’s a neat summation of relatively recent developments in the singer’s career. Her 2023 single Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol 53 transformed the toxic fallout from her breakup with footballer Gerard Piqué into one of her biggest ever hits. Within days of release, it was the most streamed track in the world and had broken the record for the number of YouTube views for a Latin American song. It was so huge, it apparently affected the stock market. “You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo,” she railed, “you traded a Rolex for a Casio” – and, incredibly, both Renault and Casio’s share prices dropped.

after newsletter promotion

Shakira: Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album cover.

Moreover, the cover suggests that there’s more where that came from, that Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is Shakira’s big breakup album – her Blood on the Tracks, her Here, My Dear – a development that might cause long-term observers of her career to prick up their ears. Her arrival on the international stage with 2001’s Laundry Service was one of 00s pop’s more cheering events. Here was a 24-year-old Colombian who seemed to have a completely unique approach to being a pop star. She proffered mainstream bangers and AOR ballads alongside musical experiments off-the-wall enough to make you wonder how they’d got past reception at a major record label: Gregorian chants, surf guitars, bursts of music hall oompah and homages to Led Zeppelin. Her lyrics were so odd that some observers patronisingly suggested their author had a shaky grasp of English, but a quick scan of their Spanish-language equivalents revealed she was using exactly the same weird metaphors and imagery in her native tongue. It was all hugely entertaining, until the commercial underperformance of 2009’s She Wolf in the US seemed to rattle her: Shakira’s albums have been getting less idiosyncratic and more dreary ever since. Perhaps the hell-hath-no-fury mood here might inspire her to recover her sense of daring: after all, a woman who expresses her feelings about her ex’s mother by allegedly putting a lifesize model of a witch directly outside her home doesn’t seem minded to meekly curry favour.

Alas, anyone harbouring such expectations should dampen them. It’s certainly an album mired in her romantic travails, from sorrow at a failing relationship (Entre Paréntesis) to brutal enumeration of her ex’s failings (Te Felicito), to tentative steps back into dating, beset by doubts and fears which seem to have been assuaged by the conclusion of Nassau (“After doing it nonstop / We repeat it”). There are occasional flickers of the blue-sky-thinking Shakira of yore, in the lyrics of Puntería (which, if the translation provided by the record company is to be trusted, contains the intriguing command “give me your fire, squeeze my buttocks”) and in the moment when Cómo Dónde y Cuándo briefly threatens to transform itself from a We Will Rock You stomp into raging drum’n’bass. But these are scattered moments in an album primarily concerned with strolling through a selection of familiar modern pop styles: some Afrobeats, a big piano ballad (complete with guest vocals by Shakira’s children), a bit of mournful reggaeton on TQG and plenty of wan pop-house of both the EDM-inspired and disco-influenced varieties. The melodies range from strong to irritatingly rinky-dink: none of them has a tune grabby enough to override the sense that you’ve heard a lot of this kind of thing already. There is a guest appearance from Cardi B – who briefly livens things up by comparing her vagina to an empanada – and there is the perennially depressing sound of a vocalist who patently doesn’t need to be Auto-Tuned submitting to it anyway because that’s the way things are done these days.

The best moments come when Shakira seeks out bands who deal in regional Mexican styles, a sound currently on the ascent in the Americas: Grupo Frontera on Entre Parentésis, and especially Fuerza Regida, who perform a frantic corrido on closer El Jefe. The latter jolts you not just because of its sweary lyrics – “I work harder than a whore but I fuck like a priest” – but because it feels unexpected. This is not music that Shakira has essayed before, which suggests the adventurous spirit that was once her USP isn’t entirely extinguished.

But if she’s still capable of making striking music, why doesn’t she do it more often? The majority of Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran settles for gliding in one ear and out the other without leaving much impression, but without actively driving you up the wall either: the state of sublime mediocrity in which a lot of current pop chooses to operate. Perhaps that’s the point here. Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran sounds like the work of someone who has decided that sales are born of playing it safe and that success in itself is the best revenge.

CSK vs RCB, IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings player ratings as Ruturaj Gaikwad captaincy era starts on winning note

T he Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got their 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign off to a winning start as they beat the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six wickets at Chepauk on Friday, March 22.

Interestingly, Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis batted first after winning the toss but lost wickets in quick succession towards the end of the powerplay and the start of the middle overs. They ended up scoring 173/6, and the home side got over the line with eight balls to spare.

Here are CSK's player ratings from Match 1 of IPL 2024 against RCB.

IPL 2024, CSK vs RCB: Mustafizur takes 4 for home side

Ruturaj gaikwad: 5/10.

Gaikwad was decent with his captaincy and struck a boundary off his first ball. However, Yash Dayal's away angle troubled him and eventually dismissed him cheaply. Nevertheless, it was a winning start to the 27-year-old's captaincy career.

Rachin Ravindra: 8.5/10

Ravindra had an excellent game as he plucked a stunning catch and essayed a superb cameo in the powerplay that put CSK ahead of the chase. He seems to be a seriously well-rounded cricketer.

Ajinkya Rahane: 7/10

Rahane did his job after coming in towards the end of the powerplay, striking two sixes in a breezy cameo. He also put in an excellent tandem fielding effort with Ravindra to dismiss Virat Kohli .

Daryl Mitchell: 6.5/10

Mitchell struck two sixes down the ground in trademark fashion off Karn Sharma . Although he struggled against back-of-a-length pace, he chipped in with a few runs that helped CSK's cause.

Shivam Dube [IP]: 7/10

Dube struggled to get going after coming to the crease as RCB peppered him with short stuff. He eventually found a way to steer a few boundaries and even middled a pull into the stands in the penultimate over. It will be interesting to see how the tall southpaw adapts in IPL 2024.

Ravindra Jadeja: 9/10

Jadeja bowled an economical spell and polished things off in the chase. He seemed to be in good batting nick, and the Super Kings will hope that the same continues over the remainder of the campaign.

Sameer Rizvi: 6/10

Making his CSK debut, Rizvi was safe on the field and didn't get to bat. He receives a standard rating.

MS Dhoni: 8/10

Dhoni was tidy behind the stumps, taking two catches and pulling off a run-out. He wasn't needed with the bat and was seen giving his successor some valuable inputs.

Maheesh Theekshana: 5/10

Theekshana's control wasn't at its best against RCB as he dished out a few full-tosses and overpitched balls. His four overs were wicketless and went for 36 runs.

Deepak Chahar: 4/10

Chahar did pick up the wicket of the dangerous Glenn Maxwell , but he got both his lines and his lengths all wrong. The swing bowler leaked 37 runs in the four overs he bowled and needs to do better in the upcoming games.

Tushar Deshpande: 3/10

Like Chahar, Deshpande was off the mark. He did make a decent comeback in the final over, which went for just nine runs, but his third over nearly cost the Super Kings the game. The fast bowler needs to have more tools in his arsenal at the death.

Mustafizur Rahman: 9.5/10

Mustafizur was the star of the show in the bowling attack as he picked up four wickets in his first two overs to rip through the RCB batting unit. The left-arm pacer used his changes of pace and cutters to great effect and could turn out to be a major value addition to the Men in Yellow.

When CSK's MS Dhoni Lost His Cool With Sushant Singh Rajput: 'He Used to Ask...' | Watch Video

Curated By : Dishya Sharma

Mumbai, India

Sushant Singh Rajput played MS Dhoni in the CSK player's biopic.

Sushant Singh Rajput played MS Dhoni in the CSK player's biopic.

Sushant Singh Rajput headlined the biopic of MS Dhoni. At the press conference of the film, SSR and Dhoni revealed an interesting anecdote.

Sushant Singh Rajput famously played the role of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in his biopic, MS Dhoni. The actor essayed the role with perfection and won hearts over. However, did you know that the Chennai Super Kings aka CSK’s former captain once lost his cool while helping SSR prepare for the film. During the promotions of the film, Sushant admitted he saw Dhoni, fondly known as Captain Cool due to his calm nature, lose his cool.

In a video from the press conference of the film, Sushant revealed, “For the first time, I have seen Dhoni losing his cool. First two to three days I asked him some questions and he answered them calmly. Then he said you ask a lot of questions let me come back. I was just asking him one question in different ways again and again."

Dhoni chipped in to add that it was a little awkward for him to talk about himself. “He (Sushant) used to ask one question repeatedly and if he gets a similar answer then he used to believe that I am being honest and then he used to go to the next question," MS Dhoni said. He added, “It was a bit awkward initially to speak about yourself. After 15 mins you get bored talking about yourself and I was like I need a break, I am going."

Watch the video here:

MS Dhoni released in 2016. The film also starred Kiara Advani and Disha Patani. The film was a blockbuster. Years after the film released, in June 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput passed away. He was found dead in his Mumbai apartment. The investigation is still on. Dhoni’s IPL team, CSK, had issued a statement on behalf of all the players at the time. They offered their condolences to his family and fans.

Meanwhile, Dhoni made headlines after CSK announced that he has handed over the captaincy of the team to Ruturaj Gaikwad. IPL 2024 kicks off on Friday, March 22.
