It was about a guy who liked to cook and garden and was a househusband but her wife was tired of listening to him all day and she decides to ask a psychologist for help and make him fall in love with her to show his unfaithfulness. But in the end the guy was just so simple and caring that his character seemed soo much better than in the start even though he had little to no change in it. I think the gradual understanding and time were the factors that led the audience to understand his emotions. Some comments include that the movie isn't really &quot;women empowering&quot; but they are quick to forget that loyal love isn't about gender. If either of them makes a mistake it's their job to repent for it not the other way around. For me this movie was a 10 because of how simply the ambiance and flow of the movie displayed the human emotions. The betrayal, disloyalty, and lies were felt throughout. And it was a heart warming ending.<br/>The people crying about women in this movie please open your eyes. You guys are just defaming a decent movie with the excuse of be the change blah blah. Do you even get the idea here? The other things like that are subtlety pointed out too. It is a out how we view it. We saw the struggles Kajal had faced throughout her life and we also saw Mouna's guilt for never actually listening to her husband. Why are you insulting the movie for something you didn't get to understand I suppose. They also portray the act of forgiveness and how important it is to forgive people too. I, as a woman, will not be a part of some absurd claims about this movie not being so-called women empowering enough. Please go and wave this flag elsewhere. Thank you!

Hey Sinamika review: Dulquer Salmaan, Aditi Rao Hydari star in ‘how to lose a husband in a month’

Hey sinamika review: dulquer salmaan, kajal aggarwal, and aditi rao hydari-starrer is about two women fighting for the same man, a theme that has been explored innumerable times in tamil films and soaps..

hey sinamika movie review greatandhra

Hey Sinamika movie director: Brinda Hey Sinamika movie cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Kajal Aggarwal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shyam Prasad Hey Sinamika movie rating: 2 stars

Hey Sinamika is the directorial debut of popular choreographer Brinda. Despite her extensive experience in the film industry, her movie is replete with rookie mistakes. It seems like her attempt to copy all the romantic movies made before hers, particularly the style of Mani Ratnam (OK Kanmani) and Gautham Menon (Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa). With hardly any novelty or heart, the film feels more like a mishmash than a wholesome romance. What’s more important is that this is a film we have already watched many times before.

hey sinamika movie review greatandhra

The movie opens with the hero sitting at a coffee shop located at the beachside. The ocean breeze seems stronger than usual as the heroine walks in with her hair blowing in the wind. They look at each other and are transfixed. Love at fight sight, indeed. There is a beautiful line from Kambaramayanam, ‘Annalum nokkinaan Avalum nokkinaal’, which talks about the first sight of eternal love. Unfortunately, the scene is not half as poetic as the underlying emotions need it to be. As a matter of fact, it couldn’t be more cold and visually conventional. The shot was so unimaginative that I wondered whether it was Brinda’s way of ridiculing the romantic stereotypes in Tamil cinema. Alas, that wasn’t the case.

The film’s central theme deals with two women fighting for the same man, which is something all Tamil TV serials have flirted with over the years.

Watch Hey Sinamika trailer:

Yaazhan ( Dulquer Salmaan ) plays a man secure in his skin. He doesn’t have any qualms about taking care of household chores as his highly-paid wife Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari) takes care of the bills. In one scene, Yaazhan is comfortable going to a wedding in his wife’s dress and holding her handbag. He is shown as an evolved species that feels no need to resort to violence, dominance or other masculine tropes to prove his worth as a man. He seems like a catch, no? But Mouna would vehemently disagree with that observation. So much so that she wants to end their marriage. She claims she is tired of Yaazhan’s clinginess and need to share, and cannot fill the void of a companion in his life anymore. And she is right. It does feel a bit too much when your partner tries to feed you cake while you are in the shower. Yaazhan may be well-read but that doesn’t mean he’s flawless. And that should have been the focus of this movie — Yaazhan understanding how his clinginess is affecting Mouna, and Mouna having a conversation like an adult with him, instead of hiring a temptress to seduce away her husband.

Festive offer

Sadly, this film is bent on painting Yaazhan as a perfect man, while Mouna is shown as a fool for not appreciating his love unconditionally. This film squanders the opportunity to be an intimate movie about relationships and the importance of maintaining a healthy space between couples. Instead, it settles on complaining: why all girls are like this only ya?

Hey Sinamika movie review: Dulquer, Aditi, Kajal stand out in this decent romantic drama

Hey Sinamika movie review: Dulquer, Aditi, Kajal stand out in this decent romantic drama

Story: A young, career-oriented woman who is not able to tolerate her husband's talkative nature and obsession for cooking, seeks the help of a psychologist to get separated from him. She also requests the psychologist to get close to her husband and build a fake relationship with him so as to get a divorce citing this as a valid reason.

Review: It's been a while since Tamil cinema has attempted a love triangle. What makes such romantic dramas work are the chemistry between lead actors, compelling screenplay, relatable sequences and effective emotions. Leading dance choreographer Brinda's directorial debut, Hey Sinamika, too, boasts of a few of these aspects.

The movie begins with Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan) and Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari) meeting at a restaurant in Kochi in an unusual setting. Without wasting much time in introducing the characters and their background, the director establishes a fairy tale love which appears brittle and rushed, thanks to the staging.

image_item

Yaazhan is a happy-go-lucky guy who is full of life. A proud house husband, his interests lie in gardening, cooking and other household chores. Mouna, on the other hand, is a career-oriented professional, whose area of interest is study of winds. Everything went fine for two years until Mouna started feeling awful about Yaazhan's talkative nature, obsession with cooking and constant offering of advice.

With no option left, she decides to get separated from her husband. Though she hatches a few plans for the same along with her colleagues, all those turn out to be futile, much to her disappointment. So when she gets an opportunity to spend a year in another city for a work-related assignment, she grabs it immediately.

After moving to the new place, she seeks the help of Malarvizhi (Kajal Aggarwal), a psychologist who is expert in relationships. Mouni narrates her problems to her and even goes on to request her to build a fake relationship with him so as to get rid of him forever, citing infidelity as the reason.

Will Mouni's plan work this time? Will Malarvizhi be able to convince Yaazhan to fall in love with her?

A poster of Hey Sinamika

First things first. It's been a while since a complicated love story has been told from a female lead's perspective despite a star like Dulquer playing the husband character. The story revolves around Aditi's character; we empathize with her issues despite knowing the fact that Yaazhan is a caring and close to perfect husband.

Coming back to Mouni, we have come across several similar characters played by male actors. But it was fun to watch Aditi running the show with Dulquer taking a backseat. On the other hand, we feel for Yaazhan as well. Like Mouna's colleague says, he has certain characteristics which any girl would love to have in their husband.

This aspect has been interestingly dealt with, thanks to the effective screenplay and convincing chemistry between the two actors. The plot becomes interesting when Yaazhan takes up a job which he instantly falls in love with. Malarvizhi's entry in his life as per Mouna's plan makes things even more complex.

This is where the director starts exploring the love triangle. But as the story progresses, the way Malarvizhi's character has been handled falters a bit. There is a reason as to why her character is judgmental about something, but we feel slightly disconnected about this part which affects the story's further sequences.

It is the flawless performances of the three lead characters complemented by Preetha Jayaraman's beautiful cinematography which make the viewers glued to the screen. The character of a person who is full of life is a cakewalk for Dulquer. Though his appearance and some mannerisms remind you of a few of his previous films, he comes up with outstanding performance, especially in a crucial scene where he realizes that he has been living in an unreal world.

In many sequences, it is Aditi who carries the movie on her shoulders, thanks to her expressions and body language. Kajal is convincing as the matured, practical doctor who also has a vulnerable side to her.

Every song of Govind Vasantha belongs to a different genre; this aspect along with the background score elevates the emotions impressively. Some of the dialogues by Madhan Karky stand out; they are simple, real and relatable.

A little more care in the screenplay in the latter half and addition of a few unpredictable moments in the climax would have made the movie a completely compelling watch. An intriguing aspect associated with AR Rahman's songs in the story is left unexplored after the plot becomes complex.

Verdict: Effective screenplay and convincing chemistry between the lead actors work in favour of the movie, despite a few shortcomings.

Hey Sinamika movie review: Dulquer Salman and Aditi Rao Hydari's breezy comedy is almost spoiled by soulless drama

Hey sinamika movie review: starring dulquer salmaan, aditi rao hydari, and kajal aggarwal,  it is more entertaining as a relationship comedy..

Dulquer Salmaan ’s Hey Sinamika, which marks the directorial debut of choreographer Brinda, tries to be both a romantic drama and a relationship comedy at the same time. Though it works fairly well as a romantic drama, it’s more entertaining as a relationship comedy, especially when it doesn’t take itself too seriously. In a refreshing departure from the kind of roles Dulquer has essayed so far, Hey Sinamika allows him to tap into his comical side and bring forth a special performance. Also Read: Aditi Rao Hydari: People’s relationship with theatres seems to be a bit different now

Hey Sinamika, starring Dulquer Salmaan, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Kajal Aggarwal, released on March 3.

When Mouna ( Aditi Rao Hydari ) is tired of her husband’s (Dulquer) relentless attention towards her, she hires a psychologist (Kajal Aggarwal) to make him fall in love with her so that she could end their marriage. Dulquer plays Yaazhan, a hopelessly romantic house-husband who can suffocate anyone with his love. He is the kind of husband that’s rare to come across. He is not jealous of his wife’s financial independence and doesn’t mind being at home and taking care of things.

As long as the film tries to be a relationship comedy while keeping the tone lighthearted, it works like a breeze. When it shifts the gear to drama, the film struggles to work and can barely keep the audience engaged. If only it remained a romantic comedy right till the end and treated the subject on an even funnier note, the film would have worked even better.

Nevertheless, the film manages to work to some extent, thanks to the comical portion in which Dulquer shines effortlessly. Aditi Rao Hydari is earnest and she delivers a mature performance. It is Kajal Aggarwal who struggles to make an impact in a poorly written, superficial character.

When the film eventually turns into a love triangle, it loses all the charm it had managed to stir up in the beginning. Even the performances turn uninteresting when the story gets serious and the film feels boring to sit through. Aditi’s character comes across as someone who isn’t sure what she wants from her marriage. She wants to get away from her husband because he suffocates her with his love and doesn’t give her any space. However, when her plans to make him fall for her psychologist come through, she starts to feel jealous and it just doesn’t go well with her character.

Hey Sinamika needed to be a breezy romantic comedy but what it ends up becoming is a problematic love triangle.

What's the Story?

In HEY SINAMIKA, Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari) is a self-confident weather scientist who falls for and marries Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan), a controlling know-it-all who can't stop talking or telling her what to do. Fully choreographed dancing and orchestrated singing break intermittently into the action. Yaazhan takes up all the oxygen in every room and corrects his wife's "mistaken" notions and constantly cooks and shovels food into her even when she says no. He claims he's just a great communicator, yet he rarely listens to her or her needs. She's soon driven mad by his nonstop monologues and seeks advice on how to get him to divorce her so she can be free. Although he defends his overbearing demeanor, at one point he admits that he knows it has prevented him from having any friends. Unable to communicate her displeasure, Mouna enlists friends to help. All Mouna's schemes to get away from him fail and, finally, to get a year of peace, Mouna accepts a work assignment that will split them up. Oblivious to his wife's displeasure, he shows up at her new place and takes over her life again. Desperate, Mouna hires a beautiful psychologist named Malar (Kajal Aggarwal) to seduce Yaazhan so that she can leave him without hurting him. Will this be enough to finally be free?

Is It Any Good?

Hey Sinamika 's biggest problem is that the audience shares Mouna's distaste for the unbearable Yaazhan. Viewers may find themselves just as desperate as Mouna to escape Yaazhan, as well as this two-and-a-half-hour talk-fest. The man stops the poor milkman to engage in a monologue on "the logic of milk bottles." People run from him when they see him coming. The movie somehow tries to suggest that the insufferable Yaazhan is a great catch and that Mouna is problematic and faulty for not recognizing his greatness, a premise every living, breathing woman will reject outright.

Most frustrating is Mouna's continuing refusal to tell Yaazhan outright that she can't stand him and that she wants a divorce. This makes her pretty annoying, too. The movie is an hour too long at best, and it becomes only more ridiculous when, without any reason offered, Mouna changes her mind and wants the intolerable man back.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about why people divorce. Did this couple have a good reason? Why, or why not?

Why do you think the wife changed her mind? Did you believe her turnabout? Why, or why not?

How does this compare to other romcoms you've seen?

Hey Sinamika is a romantic comedy film written by Madhan Karky, directed by Brinda, and produced by Jio Studios in association with Global One Studios. It has Dulquer Salmaan, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles, while Mirchi Vijay, Nakshatra Nagesh, Abishek Kumar and others play supporting roles. The film has music by Govind Vasantha and cinematography by Preetha Jayaraman.

Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan) is a software engineer who loves to cook and talk about everything under the sky. Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari) is an ocean paleotempestology expert (a person who studies and researches about storms and winds) who is on a work trip to Cochin. Both of them meet at a cafe when a storm strikes, and while escaping they fall in love with each other and marry.

However, 2 years into the marriage, Mouna is fed up with Yaazhan's talkative nature and wants to get divorced. She doesn't know how to convey this, and gets the help of Malarvizhi (Kajal Aggarwal) who is a counselling psychologist. Despite a comparatively lesser screen time, Kajal Aggarwal makes the most of it and gives us a matured performance. The drama that follows here form the rest of Hey Sinamika's plot.

Hey Sinamika doesn't waste any time and gets into the story right in the first frame itself. And the story by Madhan Karky is focused, crisp and emotionally deep. It explores the emotional arc a woman in a toxic relationship goes through, and how it affects the people around her, including her husband as well.

Dulquer Salmaan portrays the character of Yaazhan beautifully. His character is a mix of youthful exuberance and the calmness of the ocean. On the other hand, Aditi Rao Hydari looks gorgeous and emotes really well as Mouna. However, contrary to her name, she is the storm that blows away the ocean called Yaazhan. This contradiction keeps the movie lively and energetic throughout, and also engages us.

While there are not many flaws in the writing or the technical stuff, there's always a feeling that the film could have dived deeper into the plot points and tapped into its potential better. There are a lot of solid moments but after a point they are underwhelming. Though Yaazhan's talkative nature is used as a tool to generate humour, it becomes repetitive and therefore predictable after a point.

Another big positive about the film is Govind Vasantha's songs and background score. He has created a Tamil version of his independent band Thaikudam Bridge's 'Fish Rock' as Yaazhan and Mouna tie the nuptial knot. This is a well known song belonging to the rock genre, and has heavy percussion as a part of it. And when Mouna rediscovers her love for Yaazhan, the same song's classical violin version alone plays as the background score. In short, he is trying to tell a story on his own, rather than just composing music.

Preetha Jayaraman's cinematography is brilliant, especially the lighting in the indoor scenes. There are two specific scenes that show how talented she is as a cinematographer. The first one is a Sangeet Dance where we see Kajal Aggarwal for the first time. The lighting in all the frames are topnotch, and gives us the feel of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. The second one is the pre-climax scene in a terrace where she breaks the 180 degree rule and the camera work is just fantastic. The edit could have been marginally better but there's nothing that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Overall, the music and camerawork make sure most of Hey Sinamika's flaws are hidden well, and the performances lend proper support in bringing to life Madhan Karky and director Brinda's vision. The film engages you for most of its duration but could have been trimmed. A good choice for a casual watch this weekend and you won't be disappointed.

Hey Sinamika Review: When love comes with conditions

 alt=

There are those who can suffocate you with their love. The ones who will do anything to make you happy. But the same love can eventually be difficult to handle. And then you will be finding ways to get out of it. But you will also miss out on a lot of things in the process. After all ‘I miss you’ has many connotations to it. Dulquer Salmaan’s ‘Hey Sinamika’ communicates exactly these sentiments to the audience. Love isn’t enough to keep a relationship going, more than anything else you need to understand each other. That’s when life starts to look up.

‘Hey Sinamika’ is a lovely cocktail of music, love, and dance. There are a lot of things in the film we have not seen before. Romance is fresh, the narrative has novelty and the film tells us exactly how to love and how not to love! A new and updated rulebook for marriage! It’s during the entry of Kajal Aggarwal into the beautiful romance between Dulquer and Aditi Rao that the film starts to unfold.

It’s been two years since Yazhan and Mouna had a love marriage and things are going smoothly as Yazhan is a model husband. Their marriage is a success and Yazhan seems to have altered his life to accommodate his wife’s happiness. He takes care of her like a child. When some of Mauna's decisions seem to feel like an encroachment on his freedom, the story takes a new turn, especially with the entry of psychologist Malarvizhi.

We are used to seeing the stereotypical sacrificing, loving, and giving wife characters in Indian cinema since time immemorial. The kind who eventually discovers a new passion and pursues it. But in ‘Hey Sinamika’ Dulquer’s Yazhan plays a husband like that. Therefore Yazhan subverts the cliches associated with husband characters in cinema.

Choreographer turned director Brinda Master has applied her heart into the song and dance sequences and they are magical. The emotional scenes are handled with subtlety.

Dulquer has handled Yazhan with restraint. He has once again retained his position as one of the most popular actors among the younger generation. Aditi Rao and Kajal Aggarwal also have done their characters well.

Though a Radio Jockey might not be the most novel of depictions, Brinda master has succeeded in adding some new touches to the depiction.

Preetha Jayaram’s cinematography needs special mention, and they enhance the film greatly. So did Brinda master’s choreography and Govind Vasantha’s music. One of those films you really need to watch with your family.

Hey Sinamika  may be the remake of a remake (the Korean film, All About My Wife (2012), which itself was an adaptation of the Argentinian film, Un Novio Para Mi Mujer (2008)), but all of this really, really doesn’t matter because the dynamics are changed in choreographer Brinda’s directorial debut.

The original was the story of a man who wanted out from his nag of a wife. Here though, it’s not just that the genders get switched (the wife wants out here); it’s also that Dulquer’s protagonist, Yaazhan, has been redesigned into being a dream man, shall we say? He’s opinionated, yes, but his opinions stand for all the right causes—against fast food, against urgency, against bottling up emotions, against silly optimism… It’s hard to disagree with him because he’s particularly well-read and it’s hard to engage with him because he’s eloquent to boot. Say, if you were to offhandedly mention something about flirting, he would stifle you with a night-long explanation of the 23 rules of flirtation. I found him to be a bit of a bore. Oh, and he’s morally upstanding as well. If you, his spouse, were to even catch him flirting, it would never be with a lady… only with a lady's finger (which happens in this film). Understandably, Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari’s character named so because he hardly lets her speak?) gets frustrated and yearns for a moment of respite from her sanctimonious chatterbox of a husband. And you know this is coming because the opening scene, all too literally, depicts them as they meet each other during a storm (I really enjoyed the callback to this scene later on in the film).

Director: Brinda

Cast: Aditi Rao Hydari, Kajal Aggarwal, Dulquer Salmaan

First things first. I found quite a bit about Hey Sinamika to be refreshing. I liked that a mainstream actor like Dulquer normalises being a househusband and liked that his lack of employment never gets called into question or becomes the subject of mockery. It just is. I wish we had understood a bit more about his choice to be a househusband though, especially because his situation changes rather dramatically later in the film. The actor plays the role with great self-assurance, and even when a situation forces him into wearing a flowing dress that belongs to his wife, he seems greatly secure. I also enjoyed that this attribute of talkativeness—that is often attached to women and portrayed as a cute trait—is here ascribed to a man and is slightly problematised.

The role of the man as a househusband means that some usual moments get subverted. For instance, take the scene that shows Mouna going on a working vacation. Where we would typically get a scene of the husband yelling ‘ en pondaati oorukku poitaa ’, we see the wife revelling instead. Above all, these films, with their focus on interpersonal relationships, come as a welcome departure from all the star-worshipping.

Kajal Aggarwal is quite likeable and seems rather invested in playing Malarvizhi, a psychologist suffering the burden of male-inflicted trauma. Her conviction in this role ensures that the character never comes across as a caricature, even though Malarvizhi is not exactly well-defined. Perhaps because Malar speaks of all the men who have wronged her or perhaps because our society is an easier place for a man, I kept wondering about the choice to portray Yaazhan as a flawless man. In a sense, he’s almost a fantasy. He’s loyal to a fault, sensitive to boot, well-spoken, secure in his sexuality… and did I say, flawless? He doesn’t put a foot wrong. I don’t know about you, but being flawless is a sort of flaw, wouldn’t you say? I say this despite Yaazhan being a big fan of movie critics who problematise films. You see what I mean? That I dig into these characters as much is credit to how this film is populated with interesting, new people. And the score by Govind Vasantha, of course, which seems to communicate bits and pieces of peace and soul (‘ Thozhi ’ is a great example of this).

This film which seems to mean well, for the most part, takes a major misstep by making Mouna the cause of all problems. One particular shot of the woman on her knees seemed like a particularly cruel writing decision, given how it seems to absolve Dulquer’s Yaazhan of all responsibility in the relationship breakdown. Is it problematic only when someone cheats or falls in love with a person outside marriage (as Mouna attempts to stage)? Is it problematic only when you inflict physical harm on your spouse (like a couple we see in a song montage)? Is Mouna’s concern that this overbearing, spoonfeeding, talkative man won’t give her any space to exist, not valid? And yet, save for a cursory line towards the end, we barely ever see Yaazhan’s behaviour getting subjected to any scrutiny, despite it being ridiculous enough to get milked for humour for much of this film. The film’s end left me fighting a bitter aftertaste.

Also, despite all the emphasis on Malarvizhi’s character and her transformation, it appears that our films will continue to prioritise existing relationships over potential new ones. And this film, at one point, seemed so primed to do something new with its romantic triangle and create an unlikely resolution, but then, it opts for the safer route. Perhaps if the film hadn’t ended the way it did (including that rather cheesy Malarvizhi line about her career), I might have remembered it with more fondness. As it exists though, it’s still interesting enough to fuel conversation. And that’s more than you can say about most films.

Hey Sinamika Movie Review

Release Date : March 03, 2022

123telugu.com Rating : 2/5

Starring: Dulquer Salmaan, Kajal Aggarwal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Nakshathra Nagesh

Director: Brinda

Producer: Jio Studios and Global One Studios

Music Director: Govind Vasantha

Cinematography : Preetha Jayaraman

Editor: Radha Sridhar

Dulquer Salman’s choice of films is always interesting. His latest release is Hey Sinamika, which has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Aryan(Dulquer Salman) and Mouna(Aditi Rao) are a couple. But the over-sweet and possessive behavior of Aryan does not go well with Mouna. Fed up with him, she approaches a psychologist named Malar(Kajal Aggarwal) and asks her to woo her husband so that she can take divorce citing infidelity. But Malar falls in love with Aryan and creates more problems. What will Aryan do? Will he fall for Malar? or leave Mouna? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

The last ten minutes of the film make some sense as the emotions are decent. The realization of Aditi Rao’s character is shown in an impressive manner and the film is ended on a sensible note.

Dulquer Salman is quite subdued in the film but makes it up in the last half an hour. The film belongs to Aditi Rao as she has the best role and performs superbly. Not only does she look beautiful but the way she showcases emotions like jealousy, frustration, and love was good to see.

Minus Points:

The film is filled with so many drawbacks that everything cannot be put up here. Firstly, the basic plot chosen by Vrinda is horrible and showcases nothing new. A top-notch actor like Dulquer Salman is pushed aside and is lost in translation. In so many scenes, he sleepwalks in his role and one wonders as to why he even chose this film.

The basic drawback of the film is there is no bonding between the couple. The film starts on a weird note and why Dulquer behaves in such a way with his wife is not established properly leaving the audience clueless.

The entire first half goes for a toss and excessive length bores the audience. Aditi wanting to leave her husband is showcased in a funny manner that looks weird and has no strong conflict.

Last but not the least, Kajal looks weird with her makeup and the glamor associated with her is not at all showcased here. The way her character comes into the picture and falls for the hero is also showcased in a silly manner.

Technical Aspects:

The music is decent and so was the camera work. All the actors were styled horribly. Dialogues and Telugu dubbing is decent. Editing is pathetic as close to 15 minutes could have been chopped off.

Coming to the choreographer turned director Brinda, she has done a poor job. Even after having so much experience, she has written a water-thin plot. Such love stories have come in the ’80s and 90’s already.

She showcases nothing new and right from the beginning, her narration lacks clarity and basic emotion for the audience to connect. Even after having seasoned stars like Dulquer and Kajal, the film looks so dull and outdated.

On the whole, Hey Sinamika is a badly made romantic drama that makes sense only in the last ten minutes. The film is dull, lacks romance, and has no proper connection. Even though the film has big names, don’t get tempted and avoid it this weekend and look for something else.

Hey Sinamika movie review: Even Dulquer Salmaan's delightful charm can't save this hopeless romance

Hey Sinamika aspires to be a commentary on the realities of modern love, but it really does nothing

Hey Sinamika movie review: Even Dulquer Salmaan's delightful charm can't save this hopeless romance

Language: Tamil

Tamil cinema is no stranger to love triangles, especially ones where the protagonist (usually male) is in an unhappy marriage. He falls in love with another woman, only to realise his mistakes and the ‘value’ of his wife. The protagonist returns to his wife and lives happily ever after with her. From older films like Sathileelavathi to newer films like Oh My Kadavule , this narrative is so popular that it should be deemed as a subgenre.

Hey Sinamika , veteran choreographer Brinda’s directorial debut, tries to give this subgenre a new twist by exchanging the genders of the leads. Instead of the usual nagging housewife, we have a househusband. Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan) is happy managing the house while his wife Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari) brings home the money. He loves to cook, manages his garden, is a stickler for healthy food, etc. But true to the nagging housewife stereotype, Yaazhan has no respect for personal boundaries. He micromanages his wife’s daily routine and leaves no space for her desires or thoughts. In fact, he ups the ante by a notch and launches into a condescending lecture at every opportunity. Unable to breathe in the relationship, Mouna decides to find ways to divorce Yaazhan.

Usually, this is the point where the protagonist finds new love – an affair. But in Hey Sinamika , there’s a twist there too. Mouna decides to seek psychologist Malarvizhi (Kajal Agarwal) and ask her to seduce Yaazhan. If he falls for it, Mouna gets a reason to divorce him. It is baffling why any sane person would opt for such ludicrous measures. Mouna could have simply fallen in love with someone else or had an affair. But, no. That would make her ‘unforgivable’. Thus, asking a stranger to seduce her husband proves to be an easier choice. (Madan Karky is credited with story adaptation, screenplay, and dialogues) And Hey Sinamika becomes yet another film where two women end up fighting over a man.

If you think that’s the worst, there is plenty more. Hey Sinamika makes you wonder if Malarvizhi has a PhD in psychology or sleuthing. Despite all her talk about helping women find agency in their relationships, she finally terms her work as ‘separating happy couples.’ Both Yaazhan and Mouna face no familial or parental pressure – family is non-existent. There seems to be no social or emotional logic in the film.

Hey Sinamika wants to say and achieve a lot of things. It aspires to be a commentary on the realities of modern love. It wants to strip down toxic masculinity and question cultural gender roles. But it really does nothing.

Hey Sinamika holds back several necessary punches. Yaazhan calls his wife out for considering him an embarrassment. But there is nothing afterward. And Mouna never really talks to Yaazhan about his condescending demeanour; the film does not acknowledge it as well. Yaazhan says he does not want a partner just like him, but does he appreciate the differences? The film conveniently wraps it up with a platitude at the end. The film’s visuals are aesthetic – a tad too much maybe, like a music video, with its aesthetic faces and frames. But Hey Sinamika has no real conversation between Mouna and Yaazhan.

Despite the mess, it’s refreshing to see a character like Yaazhan. Dulquer’s delightful charm makes him highly endearing, despite his flaws. Amid all the toxic masculinity, it’s heartwarming to see a man so comfortable with his wife’s financial independence. There’s a scene where Yaazhan wears Mouna’s clothes because his clothes get caught in transit. In any other film, this would have been a distasteful joke. Yaazhan truly doesn’t see it as an insult or a problem. He also calls out the hypocrisy in our gender roles. It is a scene that stands out. It is a pity that the rest of the film doesn’t match up.

Hey Sinamika (2022)

  • User Reviews
  • Yaazhan takes great pleasure in handling the house, dabbling in gardening and cooking, etc.
  • In one scene, Yaazhan is shown going to a wedding in his wife's dress. He is shown as a secure man who feels no need to resort to male stereotypes to prove his worth as a man.
  • Yaazhan is constantly talking and never listening. Mouna is never shown to express her opinion on anything, except how sick of Yaazhan's habits she is, which paints her as the bad guy.
  • He is overbearing and intellectually domineering.
  • He is constantly force-feeding her - either actual food or food for thoughts. Yaazhan has an opinion on everything, which he shares without being asked. But he never asks his wife how she feels on the subject.
  • On the subject of food, he is always force-feeding her. Quite literally. For instance, there's a scene where he barges into the shower to feed her cake.
  • After a relatively brief separation that allows both Yaazhan and Mouna to take some distance and view their relationship with a pair of fresh eyes. They choose to recoil back into essentially the same routine instead of venting their frustrations and acknowledging areas of improvement within their relationship.
  • The movie ends on the very frustrating note that they both decide to make ZERO changes to their very unhealthy and toxic dynamic.

Hey Sinamika Movie Review

Actors, or musicians, or technicians shifting gears and becoming a film maker is a regular happening in Tamil cinema. The latest one to join the big list is veteran choreographer Brinda master. The dance icon who has a serious reputation for her trade makes her directorial debut with Hey Sinamika. Lyrist Madhan Karky has penned the script for the flick. Actor Dulquer Salmaan who was last seen in Tamil in the romantic comedy caper film Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal is back to Tamil cinema nearly after two long years. Actresses Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal plays the female lead roles. So, how has the drama come out? Will it be a successful outing for actor Dulquer Salmaan in Tamil after a long time? To know that let us get in to the movie review.

Hey Sinamika tells us the tale of a newly married young husband and wife, Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan) and Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari). Yaazhan is a loquacious dynamic young IT professional. He meets Mouna, on the opening scene of the film and it is love at first sight. The duo goes under wedlock at a stoke. Yaazhan understands his wife’s demanding job and takes care of the house and chores. He is sort of obsessive about Mouna and does not want her to miss him anytime even when she takes a shower. Mouna grows tired of him and feels she is in a tight space in the marriage. She wants to get away from Yaazhan for the time being. She gets a transfer to Pondicherry to be free from his fixated love. But what does a Tamil cinema hero do to impress his girl? When Suriya travels all the way to United States to impress his girl Meghna in Vaaranam Aayiram, why not travel 150 odd kilometers to impress you wife? Yaazhan does it. But on seeing Yaazhan, Mouna is not pleasantly surprised as Meghna was by seeing Suriya.

Instead, she decides to break the marriage. To do so, she comes up with a devious plan. She brokers a deal with Dr. Malarvizhi (Kajal Aggarwal), a relationship expert with a belief that all men are promiscuous. She is also, it is said, is a person with a reputation of breaking up marriages. The game is for Malarvizhi to make Yaazhan fall in love with her. So, Mouna can use that as an excuse to break her marriage with Yaazhan. Malarvizhi walks in to their life. Yaazhan gets close to her. But things are not what Mouna anticipated. Will Mouna break up her marriage, if so, will Malarvizhi and Yaazhan end up together, is what makes the rest of the flick.

Hey Sinamika aims to be auteur Mani Ratnam’s Ok Kanmani and Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa but all we get unintentionally is C. S. Amudhan’s Thamizh Padam. Hey Sinamika makes us feel as if it was a satire drama of all popular love flicks of Tamil cinema. Take the opening scene of the movie, when Yaazhan meets Mouna for the first time the cosmos reacting to their first meeting. The scene could not be staged in a more cliched way. Just like us audience, they have no idea about each other’s character but begin to talk of marriage. Seriously? If only falling in love and getting married was this easy, everyone in the world would have a love marriage.

To be fair, Hey Sinamika works well, and perhaps would have worked even better if it had been approached in as a comedy film rather than trying to force it as a poignant triangle love drama. Because the stage was set so well to draw comedy out of the couple set up. In fact, the movie does it, in the first half with the things Mouna resorts to, to shut Yaazhan from speaking incessantly. As long as the film navigates within these borders, it entertains us. That is changed when it starts to take itself seriously. As it really has nothing up its sleeves to be a serious relationship drama, and is effortlessly predictable. Another good thing about the flick is how the male character Yaazhan is shaped. Being so used to seeing male characters as an arrogant husband, watching Yaazhan as a gentle husband is refreshing.

Dulquer Salmaan and Aditi Rao Hydari combats hard to keep us invested in the dearth romance drama but it is only so much actors can do in a weak script. Actor Dulquer Salmaan fits perfectly in the role of Yaazhan. He has got under the skin of the character quite well. Actress Aditi Rao Hydari is gorgeous as Mouna. She makes up for the passably written role with her performance. Actress Kajal Aggarwal is functional. Actress Nakshatra Nagesh is adequate. Actor RJ Vijay lights up the mood. Comedian Yogi Babu serves his purpose. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them.

On the technical front, musician Govind Vasantha’s tracks are passable. His background score aid in setting the feel-good mood of the flick. Cinematographer Preetha Jayaraman has covered the flick from all the best angles possible. Editor Radha Sridhar has done a fine job with his sharp cuts.

On the whole, Hey Sinamika entertains in bits and pieces but falls flat when regarded as a whole romance drama.

Hey Sinamika review: Brinda’s directorial debut is a superficial take on modern love

Hey sinamika, brinda's first stab at direction, falls under the heavy shadow of mani ratnam in whose films, including the upcoming ponniyin selvan, her choreography is now considered a given..

hey sinamika movie review greatandhra

The poster of Hey Sinamika. Image from Twitter.

At the green age of thirteen, choreographer Brinda, known today in the industry with reverence as Brinda “Master”, started working as a background dancer. Following that, she assisted her brother-in-law, till she got her break as the lead choreographer with Iruvar (1997), directed by Mani Ratnam. The decades since have been bursting with movement — Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Karthi — as well as a National Film Award for her choreography in Daya (1998).

Hey Sinamika, her first stab at direction, falls under the heavy shadow of Mani Ratnam in whose films, including the upcoming Ponniyin Selvan, her choreography is now considered a given. The name of the film, Hey Sinamika, itself comes from the song ‘Aye Sinamika’ from Mani Ratnam’s 2015 romantic drama Ok Kanmani, an amorphous, seething yet simmering longing of a melody — like vapour slowly hissing out of a pressure cooker. The word ‘Sinamika’ was made up — “seenam” meaning anger, padded with “ika” to feminise its spirit. (Babynamespedia has a strange, questionable graph that shows the sudden spurt of female names ending with “ika” since the 1950s.) Then there are two of the three leads of this film — Aditi Rao Hydari and Dulquer Salmaan — whose bodies she has sculpted and shaped into movement for Mani Ratnam.

You may wonder, why is this context important? For suddenly, we now recognize where to locate the compelling beauty of a marriage song like ‘Sarattu Vandiyila’ from Ratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai where Brinda choreographed Aditi Rao Hydari, or the restrained erotic energy of Dulquer Salmaan in ‘Parandhu Sella Va’ from OK Kanmani.

When technicians begin to helm movies, their myopic preoccupations — either as choreographers, cinematographers, etc. — are suddenly forced to broaden. You recognize the importance of a director to elevate good choreography, good cinematography into a good song. It needs not just beauty — which itself can be produced by good textiles swirling, synchronized choreography, a hint of a melody — but vision, too, context, too.

In Hey Sinamika, charmlessness is in motion. Take ‘Siragai’, the marriage song in this film, a technical adequacy — butter creamy lighting, loose, flaring ghagras, art direction with jalis looking like stipples of light in the background — but an emotive emptiness. Nothing is budding, bubbling, building, bursting. Even the deep purple on Aditi Rao Hydari, a colour that looked poignant, melancholic in the sari of ‘Vaan’ from Kaatru Veliyidai, looks like a familiar dullness thrifted from a Fashion Week ramp, with carpet-like patterns.

Hey Sinamika, decked with beauty, with an insistence on flowing hair, subversive costuming (a sleeveless turtle-neck as a blouse), and poetic flourishes (Bharathiyar, Kaatrin mozhi) doesn’t have the necessary vision or writing. Mouna (Hydari) and Yaazhan (Salmaan) meet in the first scene in the slow-motion umbra of a gale, and a song later are married. Then, jettisoned two years ahead, Mouna is seen irritated, resentful of Yaazhan’s know-it-all verbal diarrhea, his cloying, over-protective clinging that comes with his love. She wants to divorce him, but he is too sweet — her words, not mine — and instead she enlists a relationship therapist, Malarvizhi (Kajal Aggarwal) to fall in love with him, so that he asks for a divorce.

Mouna insists she is doing this because she doesn’t want to hurt Yaazhan. But is she doing this to, also, prevent confrontation? To not be the person who ripped apart a marriage that looked fine on paper? This film, written by Madan Karky, isn’t interested in that difference. Employing the kind of radical coincidence we have now come to recognize as narrative laziness, it is happy complicating a love that it doesn’t even want to clarify to begin with.

Malarvizhi is, in some sense, an antithesis to Mouna. Not just the names, giving both Yaazhan and Malarvizhi the Tamil ‘zh’, but also in her costume design. (This, despite Aggarwal’s lack of Tamil, badly dubbed over her ill-timed mouthing, making any proximity with the Tamil language dubious.) While Mouna is mostly seen in flowing dresses, tops, denim, Malarvizhi is entirely in salwars and saris.

Seeing Malarvizhi together with Yaazan, Mouna reincarnates her love as jealousy. This is a fascinating change of heart — the kind that philosophical treatises have racked their brains over. Why do we love people? Is it something specific, particular to them, or because you recognize their desirability in the eyes of others? In the first half, there is no hint of love. In the second half, the dams burst open, because suddenly, it was not love as love, but jealousy as love.

The problem with the film is that these are characters suspended in narrative vacuum. Nothing grounds them, signals their complexity, their tectonic roots. You don’t meet or hear their parents — even their marriage is proposed and performed in a slow motion shot with just the two of them. We only vaguely hear of their parents as hurls of back stories, suddenly creeping up in dialogues like an afterthought. Yaazhan, to add to this, has no friends.

Hereon, there are mild spoilers. Hey Sinamika not only refuses to show love as love, but insists on it as a pyrotechnics that involve mind games, guilt, and money. In the second half, when Mouna’s feelings are being reconsidered, so is Yaazhan’s personality. He is no longer flinging monologues at strangers about cooking and information. Instead, he has become a coveted RJ, as though all his verbal tics have alchemized into a job. Take what is most annoying about you and make it into your cash cow? The true capitalist utopia.

But, like, what does this mean? That being a stay-at-home spouse maroons one’s worst instincts and habits? In the end, Malarvizhi accuses Mouna that it is not Yaazhan who has changed but she. That her falling back in love with him has nothing to do with him reforming his garrulous grunts. But that certainly isn’t the whole story, and I could produce reams of scenes where I contest this. The film refuses to talk about this, but Mouna changes because Yaazhan changes. He is the central protagonist. She, merely, swirls along. For a movie with two female working protagonists, and a woman at the helm of the ship, this feels like a glaring gap. But, perhaps, this movie isn’t interested in being distilled into ideas, suspending its scenes like its characters in ether, neither bringing to the surface the conviction needed to establish tension, or revel in the pay-off.

I don’t mean to entirely scribble over the film with my skepticism, though it sure does seem like that, because there is enough sweetness in the artifice of the performances — beauty, even skin-deep, is beauty, with the edges of Aditi Rao’s eyes pointing towards her nose with a pin-like sharpness, Dulquer Salmaan’s dry lips, waiting for lip balm or love — to want to know where the 2.5 hour runtime will land-fall. Somewhere between investment and intrigue, Hey Sinamika unfurls. There is, in this film, enough charm for the soggy foundations of love, the lacking tensile grip that propels them, and the general disinterest in dramatic progression, to not ruin itself into boredom. But what does one do with a spoonful of sugar?

  12. Hey Sinamika Review: When love comes with conditions

Dulquer Salmaan's 'Hey Sinamika' communicates exactly these sentiments to the audience. Love isn't enough to keep a relationship going, more than anything else you need to understand each other. 13. Hey Sinamika Movie Review: Invested performances lift this interesting

Hey Sinamika may be the remake of a remake (the Korean film, All About My Wife (2012), which itself was an adaptation of the Argentinian film, Un Novio Para Mi Mujer (2008)), but all of this really, really doesn't matter because the dynamics are changed in choreographer Brinda's directorial debut.. The original was the story of a man who wanted out from his nag of a wife.

  14. Hey Sinamika Movie Review: A Trite Film With No Romance Or Humour

Hey Sinamika is the story of Mouna (Aditi Rao Hydari), who is frustrated by her life with her husband Yaazhan (Dulquer Salmaan) and wants a break. Instead of having an honest conversation with her unemployed, over-talking, mansplaining, always-cooking, but doting husband, she tries to run away to Pondicherry.

  19. Hey Sinamika Telugu Movie Review

On the whole, Hey Sinamika is a badly made romantic drama that makes sense only in the last ten minutes. The film is dull, lacks romance, and has no proper connection. Even though the film has big names, don't get tempted and avoid it this weekend and look for something else.
