Biosketch Format

The biosketch format used for this library guide is from the NIH Biosketch page and approved through January 31, 2026.

 Personal Statement

Briefly describe why you are well-suited for your role(s) in this project. Relevant factors may include: aspects of your training; your previous experimental work on this specific topic or related topics; your technical expertise; your collaborators or scientific environment; and/or your past performance in this or related fields, including ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to (previously captured under Section D. Research Support).

You may cite up to four publications or research products that highlight your experience and qualifications for this project. Research products can include, but are not limited to, audio or video products; conference proceedings such as meeting abstracts, posters, or other presentations; patents; data and research materials; databases; educational aids or curricula; instruments or equipment; models; protocols; and software or netware. Use of hyperlinks and URLs to cite these items is not allowed.

You are allowed to cite interim research products.  Note:  interim research products have specific citation requirements. See related  Frequently Asked Questions  for more information.

  • If you wish to explain factors that affected your past productivity, such as family care responsibilities, illness, disability, or military service, you may address them in this "A. Personal Statement" section.
  • Indicate whether you have published or created research products under another name.
  • You may mention specific contributions to science that are not included in Section C. Do not present or expand on materials that should be described in other sections of this Biosketch or application.
  • Figures, tables, or graphics are not allowed.

Using ScENcv

How to Edit the Personal Statement using SciENcv

Recommendations

  • Tailor the Personal Statement to the application.
  • In the first sentence, mention the name of the grant application (e.g., R21) and speak directly to the purpose of the funding mechanism. Sell your role in the proposed research. Why are you a good fit? What strengths do you have for the proposal?
  • Use the Personal Statement to discuss your future research direction if you are a new investigator.
  • If someone is sponsoring/mentoring/collaborating with you, include this in the Personal Statement.

Notes: Peer-Reviewed Publications and Other Research Products

  • N on-peer-reviewed articles and research products can be cited in the Personal Statement along with the peer-reviewed publications. Follow the rules for citing Interim Research Products .
  • NIH requires a PMCID for works that apply under the NIH Public Access Policy and are authored by the applicant or arise from an applicant’s NIH award.
  • No specific style guide for citations is required. SciENcv formats citations from My Bibliography using the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Style Guide: Citing Medicine .
  • To save on space for the Personal Statement or Contributions to Science sections, applicants may use ‘et al’ in lieu of listing all authors in a citation.
  • Citations can be reused among the Personal Statement or Contributions to Science sections .
  • Manuscripts being prepared or under peer review can be described in the Personal Statement or the Contributions to Science narrative sections, (e.g. “I am preparing a manuscript for Journal on my work about X”), but not cited.
  • Publications noted in a My Bibliography account can be used to auto-populate the Personal Statement or the Contributions to Science sections .

Use SciENcv to create a biosketch. My Bibliography will connect to SciENcv, allowing for auto-population of  the biosketch sections for publications and work products.

There are two ways to populate a My Bibliography collection:

  • Template for publications and research products not found in PubMed

To start: select the blue "Add citation" button on the upper right of the main My Bibliography page.

A drop-down menu box will appear and prompt you to select the publication type to enter or to add the work from PubMed.

Tips for writing an effective NIH biosketch

The biographical sketch (biosketch) is an essential component of any National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant application.

It gives you an opportunity to both sell your project to peer reviewers – and to make a compelling argument for why you are uniquely qualified to contribute to the proposed research.

Research Development offers its “Top 5” tips for writing an effective NIH biosketch:

  • Read the NIH instructions. NIH biosketches must conform to a specific format. Refer to the NIH instructions , being careful to select fellowship or non-fellowship instructions, as needed. Small mistakes, such as including figures/tables/graphics or a URL hyperlink that is not to a Federal Government website (a .gov suffix), can cause a proposal to be rejected. By following the instructions, you will produce a biosketch that meets all NIH requirements.
  • Use the first person (e.g. I, me, my, we) for the personal statement. Within the personal statement, you are speaking directly to reviewers about your background and experience – and that of your team of collaborators and/or mentors – so personalize this section by using first person.
  • Articulate how your qualifications and past performance align with your role on the proposed project. The personal statement is an excellent space to frame the research problem that lies at the heart of the proposal and to tell reviewers how the project will make meaningful contributions to the field. But it also gives you space to market yourself. Utilize the personal statement to tell reviewers how your training and academic accomplishments make you the right person at the right time to fill your specific role on the team.
  • In Section A. if you elect to highlight ongoing and completed projects from the last 3 years, be strategic and cite projects that are most relevant to the project at hand. Include a sentence or two that explains to reviewers why you chose to highlight those specific projects. Perhaps those projects gave you the opportunity to develop research methods, determine feasibility, generate preliminary data, or otherwise leverage a unique skill set that will benefit the proposed project.
  • In Section C. Contributions to Science, consider what story you want to tell your reviewers. There is no singular “right way” to organize this section of a biosketch, but there are approaches that work well. Consider organizing your contributions by career phase – e.g. graduate research, postdoctoral scholarship, faculty research – using a narrative style to engage readers in your journey as an investigator. Alternatively, a descriptive writing style can be used to group contributions by scientific foci, methods, or public health relevance. Whatever approach you choose, be selective about the contributions – and citations listed. Most importantly, keep in mind that while the NIH instructions allow for a biosketch to include up to five (5) contributions, reviewers tend to base their expectations on the individual’s seniority. Focus the contributions on relevant accomplishments and expertise – and choose quality over quantity.

Get feedback on your biosketch Research Development’s biosketch reviews focus on format, style, clarity and effective use of language. To request a review of your NIH biosketch – or for further questions, email [email protected] .

Personal Statement

The Personal Statement section is where you make your case for why you are well-suited to your role on the project. You might include key aspects of training or past experience, technical expertise, significant collaborations, and past performance in this or related fields.

This is also an opportunity to explain anything else you’d like the reviewers to know about your career and research directions. For instance, this is where you can describe how you are proposing work in a new direction, or significant training or mentorships relationships.

If you wish to explain impediments to your past productivity, you may include a description of factors such as family care responsibilities, illness, disability, and active duty military service.

Following the May 25, 2021 changes in the biosketch, this is now the section where you include a list of the ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to. This was previously captured under Section D. Research Support. Here you want to briefly indicate the overall goals of the projects and your responsibilities. Do not include the number of person months or direct costs. While including this information is optional, it will be used by the reviewers in the assessment of your qualifications for a specific role in the proposed project, as well as to evaluate the overall qualifications of the research team.

Finally, you can provide information on up to four publications or research products that specifically highlight your experience and qualifications for this project. Research products can include, but are not limited to: audio or video products; conference proceedings such as meeting abstracts, posters, or other presentations; patents; data and research materials; databases; educational aids or curricula; instruments or equipment; models; protocols; and software or netware. The inclusion of active hyperlinks to the URLs to cite these items is not allowed.

For outputs that are not publications any popular citation style guide is acceptable. However if they are interim research products, such as a preprint, they require a particular citation standard that includes elements like a DOI, object type, and most recent date modified. The NIH provides citation examples on their website.

While there is no limit to the length of the personal statement, keep in mind that the entire biosketch cannot exceed five pages. This total length limitation may affect what you choose to include in the personal statement section.

  • While there is no requirement on writing in first or third person voice, biosketches generally sound better when written in first person.
  • Indicate whether you have published or created research products under another name.
  • Define any acronyms when you first present them.

Details on New Components

1. Contributions to Science

  • the historical background that frames the scientific problem
  • the central finding(s)
  • the influence of the finding(s) on the progress of science or its application to health and technology
  • your specific role in the described work
  • Each contribution can reference up to four peer-reviewed publications OR other non-publication research products including:  audio or video products; patents; data and research materials; databases; educational aids or curricula; instruments or equipment; models; protocols; and software or netware. Keynote addresses, conference presentations, and posters can count as research products for the Contribution to Science section. (added 11/17/15)
  • The description of each contribution must be no longer than one half page including citations and figures .  Effective with May 25, 2016 applications, graphics, figures and tables are not allowed . (added 11/17/15)

2. URL to Complete List of Published Work (component of Contributions to Science section)

  • My Bibliography in your My NCBI account : Use the sharing feature to create a public link to your works that you can add to your biosketch (created using either the online SciENcv tool or the NIH Word template).
  • Alternatives to My Bibliography? (From NIH Biosketch FAQ #4 ):

"Per NOT-OD-15-032 , the new biosketch format allows applicants to include a link to a full list of their published work as found in a “publicly available digital database” such as My Bibliography. The link is optional.

NIH cautions reviewers against accessing URLs that may compromise their anonymity. The NIH prefers applicants use My Bibliography because the NIH can assure reviewers that their anonymity will be protected if they review publications at that site. Use of a publicly available database other than My Bibliography is at the discretion of the applicant, but applicants should bear in mind that reviewers are unlikely to click on unknown links. These links must be accessible to the general public without registration and must not point to informational websites that may violate page limit rules (NOT-OD-11-080).

For these reasons, linking to a lab or researcher's site would be inappropriate."

Other publicly available sites which include data from a broad spectrum of institutions and maintain anonymity of the users accessing the sites are acceptable (e.g., Google Scholar). Links to sites managed by the investigator or applicant organization or URLS including the applicant organization name should not be used."

  • Spell the URL out in full, beginning with ‘http://’ (e.g., -->http://grants.nih.gov/grants/oer.htm -->).
  • Do NOT include the link as hyperlinked text (e.g., NIH Grants Web page ) as eRA system processing will not retain the active link in the assembled application image in eRA Commons.

New Biosketch Creation Tools

  • SciENcv : This is a new online tool that is designed to create biosketches for NIH grant applications. This tool eliminates the need to repeatedly enter biosketch information. SciENcv will output a biosketch in Word, PDF or XML formats. NOTE: It is recommended that you set up your My Bibliography first.  See SciENcv details below .
  • NIH Templates (Word) : NIH has created  new biosketch templates in Microsoft Word for use by those who wish to create in Word and then convert to PDF for submission.

For more instructions, a blank format page, and sample Biosketches, go to the NIH Biosketch page.

Biographical Sketch

SciENcv is a new tool designed to help researchers complete biosketches efficiently. This tool will link to and pull in biographical information from your eRA Commons account (or other sources) and publications from your NCBI My Bibliography account. An ORCID ID can be linked as well to provide a unique author identifier.  SciENcv currently includes templates for the new NIH biosketch format as well as for the NSF biosketch format. SciENcv will support additional biosketch formats in the future.

Why should I use SciENcv?

  • Eliminates the need to repeatedly enter the same information
  • The researcher can control the content and edit it as needed
  • Creates multiple profiles so each biosketch can be tweaked to support a particular grant application and funding agency
  • Export the results as a PDF or share via a URL
  • Grant access to other people (delegates) to view and manage your profiles

To create a biosketch using SciENcv, follow these steps:

  • Sign into My NCBI .
  • If this is your first use of SciENcv, select the link "Click here to create a new CV."
  • If you are a returning user, select the link "Manage SciENcv" and then select to "Create a new profile" or edit an existing profile.
  • Select the second tab "From an external source." Enter a name to identify the profile.  (You can also elect to create a biosketch profile from scratch (1st tab) or from a copy of an existing profile (3rd tab).
  • Choose "NIH BIosketch" as the type of profile (the other choice is "NSF Biosketch (alpha)"
  • Select eRA Commons as the external source from which to pull in your biographical information. (Other choices are ORCID or National Science Foundation)
  • Choose whether to make your profile public or private.
  • Select "Create." Now your My Bibliography references and eRA commons both linked to the new profile and can be used to generate a biosketch.
  • Fill out your biosketch profile, and choose citations to include from your My Bibliography collection.
  • Share or download your biosketch by using the URL or PDF.

Tailor Your Biosketches Early, Coordinate with Key Personnel

When preparing to submit an application you’ve probably thought a lot about how you are going to present your proposed project. You may have also thought about what to put in the personal statement that is now part of your biosketch. But what about other investigators whose biosketches will be included? In the past, biosketches were one size fits all. Now, each biosketch includes a personal statement that describes why your experience and qualifications make you particularly well-suited for your role in the project. Let the other members of your team know well in advance of the application due date that it is time to update their biosketch.
