America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Specifically, the program is designed to accelerate the progress graduates make toward achieving meaningful impact in influential roles and/or crossing boundaries in the following spaces in the public education sector:

  • PreK–12 district or CMO leadership roles : superintendent of schools, chief academic officer, and/or deputy superintendent
  • Foundation/philanthropy roles:  director, president and CEO, senior fellow
  • Education nonprofit roles : president or executive director of backbone or collective impact organizations which support preK–12 schools. Ed.L.D. graduates will lead education nonprofits that explicitly focus on improving outcomes and opportunities for children, families, and communities.
  • State or federal education leadership roles : commissioner or deputy commissioner roles. Could also include public education advocacy or education policy advisers to senior government officials.
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation roles:  Founder, CEO, president

Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). Courses taken during the first-year focus on practice-based learning and serve as the framework of your first-year experience.

Each cohort member works with program advisers to choose an individualized sequence of electives from any of the Harvard graduate schools. You will work closely with the program faculty and staff during your second year to determine the best match with a partner organization for your third-year residency. Matches are driven by mutual interest between the resident and the partner organization, and each student's career and learning goals and geographic preferences.

  • Second Year Practicing Leadership Inside and Out
  • Driving Change
  • Education Sector Nonprofits
  • Negotiation Workshop
  • Coaching with Equity in Mind

You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector.

Strategic Project

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.

How is the third third-year residency determined? Will I get to choose where I go and for whom I work?

You will work closely with Ed.L.D. Program faculty during your second year to determine the best partner organization match for your third-year residency. In ascertaining a match, faculty take a number of factors into account, including a students' career goals and geographic preferences. The program expects that the current list of partners will continue to grow based on organizational and student interest.

The Ed.L.D. Program has partnered with organizations that are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in American preK–12 education. The partners are school systems, nonprofit organizations, mission-based for-profit organizations, and government agencies, all pursuing a common goal of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. You will work directly with partner organizations in the third-year residency and have some exposure to partner representatives in the first two years of the program. Your work with our partner organizations will be encapsulated in a Capstone, which is descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of the your leadership and contributions to a strategic project. Summaries of Capstones by several members of the first cohort of Ed.L.D. graduates are available in the curriculum section.

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (online)

USC-Rossier-Alumni-Mag_Rebecca-Aranda_August-2021-4

This program is designed for working professionals with leadership experience who desire to lead K-12 schools, universities, community colleges or other educational settings.

To address the existing gaps in education, the EDL online program empowers students to lead change through an equity and social justice lens. The program will prepare students to improve academic opportunities and outcomes.

Program Overview

The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership online (EDL online) program prepares you to be a critically conscious leader equipped with strategic thinking, evidence-based research skills, and the ability to create equity and foster continuous organizational improvement. The online program offers four concentrations: K-12 Leadership in Urban School Settings, Leading Instructional Change, Higher Education Administration, and Educational Psychology.

Through this program, you will:

  • Earn a doctorate recognized by employers in the field of education.
  • Be able to maintain a full-time work schedule while taking two courses one night a week.
  • Learn alongside a cohort of experienced educational professionals nationwide.
  • Become equipped to address critical issues in historically marginalized communities and make a lasting impact.

The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (EDL) program will equip you with knowledge and skills in six core competencies:

  • Accountability
  • Critical reflection
  • Diversity and equity
  • Learning organizations
  • Research and data

In the first year of the program, you will complete core courses that reflect USC Rossier’s mission and the program’s purpose. Explore the dynamics of power and privilege in education, leadership, and addressing inequities in learning opportunities. Subsequent coursework will build on this foundation and prepare you to become a leader in schools, colleges and universities or educational settings.

Online Concentration

Each concentration path includes four courses and a concentration-specific format for the dissertation in practice. A faculty member in your chosen concentration will provide guidance throughout your dissertation completion. Relevant career experience is a requirement for the concentration you select.

The K-12 leadership concentration will prepare you to become a leader in classrooms, schools or school districts. The courses help develop an understanding of how to create high-performing schools that address the diverse needs of all students regardless of school setting. The course sequence culminates in either EDUC 720: Leadership for Principals or EDUC 721: Leadership for Superintendents, an integrated composite of effective leadership practices that result in more effective organizational outcomes, including increased student achievement.

Recommended career background for this concentration:

Teacher, administrator or education professional in PK-12 education at the local, state and federal levels.

Dissertation in practice: Study an existing problem of practice and complete a traditional five-chapter dissertation.

Career Outcomes: The K-12 leadership concentration prepares you for employment as an educational leader in the K-12 field. Is an Online Doctor of Education, Leadership and Innovation the Right Fit for Your Advanced Leadership Goals?

Successful leaders know that learning is the key to innovation. Transformative change requires highly developed leadership and problem-solving skills; that’s why many professionals in leadership roles look to advanced learning opportunities, such as doctoral programs, to gain the expertise to achieve their goals. Finding the right program is critical.

The NYU Steinhardt online Doctorate (EdD) in Leadership and Innovation is designed for leaders motivated to create change through education and learning. Whether you work in education, philanthropy, government, nonprofit, or private sector, the Steinhardt EdD in Leadership and Innovation can help you enhance your skills to effect change. Read on to learn whether this program can help you achieve your career goals.

What will you learn in the EdD in Leadership and Innovation program?

The online EdD from NYU Steinhardt takes an innovative approach to education and leadership by gathering cohorts of leaders from different backgrounds and sectors to problem-solve collaboratively. The program focuses on the most critical issues leaders face today, applying an analytical approach to challenges to equip students with the core competencies required for most director and executive-level jobs.

Coursework covers policy analysis, change and innovation, organizational theory, learning theory, resource management, and data ethics. The capstone Problem of Practice (POP) project prepares students to solve real-world organizational challenges through research, collaboration, and leadership.

The case for online learning at NYU

Online learning offers several significant advantages for busy professionals seeking an advanced degree, including opportunities to apply what you learn immediately in real-life situations.

Flexible modality

The NYU online EdD program is built for professionals who want a high-quality, high-touch doctorate that offers flexibility alongside academic rigor. The curriculum includes seminars, immersive experiences on the NYU campus, research-intensive coursework, online synchronous class discussions with faculty, asynchronous instruction, and independent work.

As a former student, Dr. John Roth, a shareholder of Maynard Cooper & Gale, explains, “The doctoral program marries academic rigor with real-world problems. We’re looking through an academic lens to make sense of the world, but at the same time, we’re bringing problems from our own fields of practice and coming up with solutions that matter.”

Applied learning

The POP capstone project , which takes the place of a dissertation, enables students to apply their learnings to a real-world problem they are facing. A student defines their POP even before the program begins, when they identify an organizational challenge they want to address as part of their application. Then, with guidance from faculty, they frame this challenge through an academic lens and map a way to confront it.

For example, a student focusing on higher education might seek to answer the question: “Using technology, how may we coordinate student services to ensure effectiveness and affordability?” A student from a corporate organization might ask: “How can I effectively transmit organizational culture throughout a series of mergers?”

The program helps students to develop skills to make more informed, data-based decisions and teach them to leverage their leadership positionality to address their POP. Through this approach – which is unique among doctoral programs –  students may drive impact in their organizations while still in the program.

Cohort-based approach

The NYU EdD program is built on a cohort-based approach , connecting leaders from various sectors to engage around their unique Problems of Practice. This format challenges students to look beyond their discipline and industry for solutions, ultimately activating new networks of leaders eager and prepared to create innovative, cross-sector solutions to pressing issues.

As NYU EdD student Nadir Zafar explains, “The EdD program is not just for those in the education sector. My cohort has people from technology companies, social organizations, and the manufacturing industry. It’s a very diverse group, and I enjoy learning from them. These are people who possess great qualifications, including MBAs from top universities. They have rich experience in the business world and the education world, and it’s been very helpful to get perspectives from both sides.”

Faculty mentors

Throughout the program, students can connect with NYU faculty . The online EdD faculty includes thought leaders, researchers, and senior leaders from various industries, providing students with a diverse learning experience.

Ready to learn alongside distinguished leaders at NYU?

If you want to upskill your advanced leadership skills in a program that fits your busy professional schedule, the online EdD from NYU Steinhardt may be the perfect fit. NYU regularly offers virtual information sessions where you can find out more about the EdD program; join one to learn more.

You can also request more information and speak to an enrollment advisor for one-on-one advice. An enrollment advisor can answer any questions about the program, help you determine whether you are eligible to apply , and guide you through the application process.

Capstone Project

The capstone experience in the Ed.D. in Organizational Learning and Leadership program is the culmination of the academic rigor and practical learning acquired throughout the program. The capstone is designed to showcase the student’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge, empirical research, and innovative thinking to address complex challenges within organizational learning and leadership. While the capstone project comes later in the program, the curriculum has been designed carefully to scaffold student work toward the capstone throughout the program. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their expertise to make lasting improvements and impact in an organization. The capstone includes a three-semester course sequence in which students identify a problem of practice — a complex and/or pervasive problem within the organization in which they work or within another organization’s practice — and, using lessons from past coursework, explore ways to solve it. Their research results in a written capstone report that details the organizational challenge, their process and findings, and their decision-making — all of which their capstone committee will review. During capstone seminars, students explore best practices for working on large analytic projects, receive personalized guidance and feedback on their efforts from instructors, and learn from their peers as they both give and receive feedback on projects.

Key aspects of the capstone experience include:

Problem identification

The journey begins with the identification of a significant problem or challenge within an organizational context. This problem should be real and impactful, reflecting the complexities and nuances that leaders often face.

Literature review

Students will conduct an in-depth review of relevant literature and theoretical frameworks. This phase helps them establish a solid theoretical foundation for addressing the identified problem and provides insight into existing research and best practices.

Research methodology

Choosing appropriate research methods and data collection techniques is a crucial component of the program and is offered through a series of research methods courses. Whether the capstone involves qualitative or quantitative research, surveys, interviews, case studies, or a combination of methods, the methodology should align with the challenge being studied.

Data collection and analysis

Students will gather and analyze data to gain insights into the problem. This phase involves rigorously analyzing data to draw meaningful conclusions and patterns that will inform potential solutions.

Human-centered approach

One of the distinguishing features of this capstone is the emphasis on a human-centered approach. Students will focus on understanding the needs, perspectives, and experiences of individuals within the organization, recognizing that the success of any intervention or solution depends on the engagement and well-being of its members.

Solution generation

Based on research findings, students will generate innovative solutions and strategies that address the identified problem. These solutions are designed to be practical, actionable, and tailored to the specific organizational context.

Implementation Plan

A well-thought-out implementation plan is crucial for translating ideas into action. Students will develop a detailed roadmap for executing their proposed solutions, considering factors such as change management, resource allocation, and timelines.

Evaluation and impact

After implementing the solutions, students will evaluate the effectiveness and measure the impact on the organization. This stage often involves revisiting the research data to assess whether the problem has been successfully mitigated and whether new challenges have arisen.

As a final step, students will reflect on their journey, lessons learned, and the combination of their academic and practical experiences. The reflection process contributes to the development of critical self-awareness and a deeper understanding of their role as organizational leaders.

Organizational Leadership Careers

This program prepares graduates to pursue a variety of organizational roles across multiple industries. Whether working alongside HR to develop talent and support employees in healthcare settings, working directly with members of leadership in higher education to drive positive change, or implementing new systems and practices to achieve greater efficiency in a nonprofit, graduates will be expert leaders, ready to achieve goals to fulfill their organization’s mission and make a difference. St. Bonaventure’s online Ed.D. in Educational Leadership offers three dissertation options based on areas of interest and career objectives, while connecting goals with a focus on real-world educational problems. Each of the three dissertation pathways allows students to demonstrate what they have learned in the program while showing capacity to address local educational issues in light of broader theories, trends, and research.

  • Dissertation in Practice : With this option students perform in-depth, sustained-action research. An educational problem within the student’s sphere of influence is identified and research informs a change designed to improve conditions. The change is implemented and studied with analysis speaking to potential future changes in practice and research on the topic. An ability for students to develop a plan and enact change is crucial for this dissertation type.
  • Dissertation in Praxis (Theory/Practice connection) : Students draw from an educational theory or model to make and study a change to address a larger and more pervasive problem of practice. The student’s research looks at the theory-practice connection through experimentation and testing of the theory model to speak to the larger educational field. This theory or model is then applied within a specific context where some of the variables to test the theory can be controlled. Finally, analysis contributes to theory development or refinement, as well as ways to support the theory-in-action.
  • Dissertation in Planning : Students draw from research to propose a change in educational policy or practice. An issue is chosen that needs to be changed or improved, based on a pragmatic problem that is close to the student and also speaks to larger educational issues. In creating a plan for change, students look at wider literature on this issue, collect their own local data (e.g. interviews or surveys), make a research-based proposal for change, and discuss positive and negative implications and how this change would be analyzed. The ultimate product is a detailed proposal for changes to policy and/or practices backed up by research.

It is your responsibility to initiate the degree conferral application process by submitting an online application. Submitting an application means you intend to finish your degree requirements by the end of the term for which you have applied.

After you submit the application, you cannot register for any term after the one selected in the application.

Provided that all requirements and financial obligations are met, degrees are posted 30 days after the official end of the term. Official dates are listed on the Academic Calendar.

Types of Doctorate in Educational Leadership Online Programs

Types of Doctorate in Educational Leadership Online Programs

There are two doctoral degrees for Educational Leadership.

Though similar, they are designed to support different professional goals.

Earning a PhD is generally for those who either want to conduct research in the field or who want to teach at the university level.

As a researcher, you may conduct studies on educational practices and theories to better inform professionals in the field. Your curriculum can help prepare you to carry out accurate studies and present non-biased findings. This career path may involve quite a bit of professional writing, so your courses may also help you hone your writing skills.

For those who want to teach in a university setting, your course of study can help inform you of the latest research findings and teaching techniques to utilize and pass on to your students. It can also help you prepare to take up a leadership position in your department.

This degree, on the other hand, is for those who want to lead educational institutions. Your workplace could be anything from a preschool to an elementary school to a high school to a university. You might also work at a vocational training facility, a military training program, or for a specific business teaching employees how to better perform their jobs.

Your course of study will likely focus on the latest research in the field and how to conduct your own studies so that you can make informed decisions for your institution. You may also have the opportunity to upgrade your own teaching skills.

If you’d like to step into an administrative role, this may be the online education degree for you.

Differences Between a PhD and an EdD in Educational Leadership

group of professionals in a meeting

The difference between earning a PhD and a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Leadership is the career path that the course of study prepares you for. PhD students generally seek tenure as professors at university-level institutions, while EdD graduates usually enter the professional field via administrative and managerial opportunities .

Salaries are not guaranteed and depend heavily on academic performance, work experience, location, and other factors. That being said, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), both variations of this post-graduate community stand to garner more than adequate compensation.

PhD graduates often start off as professors, eventually moving into the role of dean of students and other leadership positions. EdD students usually end up serving as high school principals, district superintendents, and other high ranking administrators.

Take Your Education to the Next Level!

someone graduating with a doctoral degree

The first is to determine which Educational Leadership doctoral degree matches your career goals. If you see yourself teaching in a university or researching educational practices, a PhD is probably the right path. If you’d rather serve in an administrative role, you might be better off with an EdD.

After you determine which degree is the best fit for you, you should look at which schools offer the concentration you’re most interested in. Apply to 3-5 universities and begin researching financial aid opportunities. In 1-3 years, you may have your terminal education degree.
