LaTeX template for theses (i.e. dissertation) at the Institute of Geomechanics and Underground Technology at RWTH Aachen

GUT-Aachen/latex-template

Folders and files, repository files navigation, gut thesis latex template.

LaTeX template for theses (i. e. dissertation) at the Institute of Geomechanics and Underground Technology at RWTH Aachen. The template is based on the scrbook-class of the KOMA-Script . Some design modifications are made to match the design demands of the chair:
  • fonts and fontsize
  • linespacing
  • header/footer
  • headings (chapter/section/subsection)
  • captions (tables and figures)

License: GNU

Requirements

  • MiKTeX v20.7
  • KOMA-Script v3.31
  • Babel v3.51

Other required packages are listed under the topic Packages .

Include the biblatex citation and bibliography styles. This can be done in two different ways:

Add the texmf folder (in biblatex-style) to your miktex installation:

  • Open Miktex Console
  • Select Operation Mode
  • Goto Settings > Directories > Add
  • Choose texmf folder from ./biblatex-style folder
  • Task > Refresh file name database
  • You are good to go

Copy the files rwth-gib.bbx and rwth-gib.cbx contained in one of the subfolders to the root directory of your document (same folder where main.tex is stored).

It is highly recomended to choose the first solution, as an update to a newer version of this repo is much easier and less confusing.

Include designGiB.tex to your main document:

Optional: Change language from english to ngerman in document class. This needs to be hardcoded into the designGiB!

Setup user configuration file user_config.tex in subfolder ./additionals . You must not include this file, this is automatically done by the template.

Set document \def\myThesisType{xx} type BA for bachelor thesis, MA for master thesis or DISS for dissertation:

Set author, reviewers/examiners and exam date

Setup additional information like title/subtitle (for dissertation) or german/english title, supervisor and location (for master/bachelor thesis).

Find additional information in Data input for headings and title page .

Optional: Load additional packages

Optional: Include bibliography and acronym sources in main.tex not in user_config.tex .

Begin the document.

Include a specific title page (automatically set by template)

Remember to use /frontmatter , /mainmatter and /appendix . (see Additional Hints|Document segmantation)

Start your thesis!

This repository consists of a design template, title pages (different per document type), a bibliography style and samples (minimal and full).

  • lmodern changes fonts and makes them clearer
  • longtable table enrivonment for tables longer then a single page (in this case its used list of symbols)
  • microtype better results in line breaks and overfull boxes
  • scrlayer-scrpage is part of KOMA-script and is used to manipulate header and footer, i. e. adding seperation lines
  • setspace changes the linespacing in an easy way

  • todonotes insert to–do items in your document

Recommended packages for germans

  • ziffer activates the german punctation conversion: , is decimal separator; . is thousand separator (will be replaced by protected space)

Data input for headings and title page

Different title pages are available depending on the document type. To create a nice and correct title page some additional information are needed and the kind of intermation depends on the title page. The information have to be written into commands, that are going to be used by the title page, e. g. \def{\myAuthor}{Jane Doe} . These additional information have to be stored in a seperate file called user_config.tex stored in additional subfolder (see full sample).

  • \myThesisType type of document: BA, MA or DISS
  • \myAuthor author of the document
  • \myFirstReviewer first reviewer or examiner
  • \mySecondReviewer second reviewer or examiner
  • \myExamDate date of the presentation or submission

Additional for dissertation:

  • \myTitle title of the thesis
  • \mySubtitle subtitle of the thesis

Additional for bachelor/master thesis:

  • \myTitleDe title of thesis in german
  • \myTitleEn title of thesis in english
  • \mySupervisor name of supervisor
  • \myExamLocation location of the examination, i. e. Aachen

Additional Hints

Setup template to german language.

Modify language in template designGiB . Change english to ngerman as follows from

Include package ziffer

Change headings for bibliography:

  • When calling \printbibliography set option to title={\myBibCaption} \printbibliography [title={ \myBibCaption }]

Error(s) while compiling

If you are running into errors while compiling your latex document, these hints might help you to solve your problem:

  • Update your miktex installation to prevent errors due to oudated packages.
  • Check if compiler is set to PdfLaTeX and not XeLaTex or LuaLaTeX .
  • Check if bibliography interpreter is set to biber (biblatex) but not to bibtex
  • Take a deeper look into the log files and try to solve it on your own.
  • Running on Linux? Inlcude inputenc package and set option to utf8 .

Bibliography

Set up/declare the bibliography file *.bib in your main document and not in the user_config.tex . Due to the software you are using this can cause problems, because the software, e.g. TeXstudio, doesn't recognize the bibliography files, doesn't run biber and therefore the compiler tells you, that main.bbl is missing. Furthermore will the bibliography compiling not be done automatically, as changes of the bibliography file are not automatically recognized by your software.

Document segmantation

Insert the title page before the frontmatter starts to ensure the start of page numbering at the TOC.

Use \frontmatter at the beginning and set the page numbering to Roman . The front matter includes all lists of something, e. g. figures and table of contents.

Following use \mainmatter for the main part of the document, closing with the bibliography. In this and the upcomming parts page numbering is set so arabic automatically.

Close the document with \appendix .

Easy Review

  • Include package lineno \usepackage { lineno }
  • Put the following code at the beginning of your document \begin { document } \linenumbers % add numbers to each line \setstretch {2} % set line spacing to factor 2 ...

Preset default figures path

You can preset a default path where figures are stored to reduce typing in your main document. Set default path via

Now you can use

Create a list of symbols

The easiest way to create a list of symbols is to create a table containing your symbols and the description. You should use a longtable in this case to be prepared for a table enlarging a single page. Each column has a fixed width to ensure linebreaks if a description is to long for a single line.

Use value-unit-pairs (siunitx)

To create a value unit pair the opportunities of siunitx package should be used.

Captions for tables

To create a caption above a table, respecting design margings \captionabove must be used instead of \caption .

As an incoming guest student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, you may also be interested in conducting project work or research, or might want to write your thesis at RWTH Aachen University. The following paragraphs will explain how to approach such endeavors. Please note: you should clarify with your home institution any stipulations that may exist with regard to what your faculties expect from any of said projects!

How to approach a research project

As mentioned, we cannot arrange project work. Our institutes are autonomous in their choice of candidates – as you will enjoy the same status as any other RWTH student, equal conditions apply as well.

At the time of your application, the International Office will ask you to indicate who will supervise your project. We urge you to take all the necessary steps when contemplating whether you would like to study at RWTH Aachen University. However, if you cannot find a suitable project in advance, please let us know!

1. Identify your interest

Students at RWTH Aachen University are expected to take care of project work themselves. With over 10.000 students, the faculty staff cannot arrange projects for each student. Therefore, in a first move, you should identify your research interests and look out for institutes at RWTH Aachen University whose research focus matches your own. First of all, take a look at the various institutes affiliated with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

2. Locate available projects online

Many of our institutes regularly publish available project or thesis work online, including a detailed description of what is expected of a candidate and how to apply. We would advise you to continuously check the respective homepages.

3. Contact the institute

Once you found a project online, contact the professor or assistant in charge via e-mail. We recommend that you do so rather formally, including a short introduction of yourself and attaching a CV in order to give the professor or his/her assistant an impression of your academic career to this point. There is no need to worry – our institutes are always on the lookout for talented students!

Alternatively, you may, of course, also suggest a project which corresponds, more or less, to the respective institutes overall research field.

4. Clarify formal requirements

As a rule, you may compose your research project either in German or in English – depending on the consent of your supervisor. Please inquire at your home institution whether formal criteria, such as minimum duration of a project or a certain number of ECTS to be awarded, apply. At RWTH Aachen University, we award ECTS in correlation with the duration of the project:

Students can commence with their Master thesis when the admission requirements of the respective Examination Regulations have been fulfilled. The form required for registering the Master thesis is available from the Central Examination Office (ZPA), which will also check fulfillment of the admission requirements. Only in exceptional cases will the ZPA grant admission before fulfillment of the admission requirements, e.g. when only one mandatory module still has to be completed. In such cases, a written application must be made to the Examination Board. The application must have been approved beforehand by the academic member of staff who provided the topic for the Master thesis

The required form for registering the Master thesis needs to be signed by the student, the professor, the chairperson of the Examination Board, and the Central Examination Office (ZPA). Due to this procedure, approximately 2 weeks will elapse before the registration process is complete.

The completed Master thesis must be submitted threefold:

  • two (paper-based) copies including a digital version for both of the assessors
  • one digital version (preferably a CD) for the archives

The three versions are submitted to the Central Examination Office, which will check that the submission deadline has been complied with

Please use the following Form for the digital CD version

Information about Thesis Process

A diploma or master’s thesis aims at demonstrating the student’s ability to apply computer science methods in a larger project mostly self dependently. In practical computer science, such projects often appear as extensions of larger software systems developed within scientific research projects at the chair. In such a case the thesis consists of an implementation part (including the documentation!) and a written elaboration on the theoretical foundations. A detailed discussion of computer science problems and an analysis of computer science methods that are used must always be at the center of the investigation. Even for more application-oriented theses, these issues have to be considered at least equally important to the analysis of the application area.

All the details below apply to a diploma as well as bachelor’s and master’s theses – they are not treated differently.

Orientation Phase and Proposal Presentation

Depending on the student’s previous knowledge an orientation phase precedes the thesis. This phase is intended to be used for

  • reviewing related work (literature),
  • becoming acquainted with the environment conditions for the implementation, and
  • clearly defining the problem which has to be tackled in the thesis.

The orientation phase results in an abstract (“proposal”) which is about 15-20 pages in length and has to include:

  • the well-defined problem to be solved and goals to be achieved,
  • a comparative study of first ideas for solution esp. with regard to related work (literature),
  • a short presentation of the chosen approach, and
  • a well calculated working plan.

This proposal is discussed with the tutors (professor and assistant) and therefore has to be presented in form of a so-called proposal presentation (duration approx. 30 min) at the I5 seminar at the end of the orientation phase. It is seen as a kind of a “contract” both sides can refer to. This is to avoid misunderstandings concerning the topic of the diploma thesis and a serious misjudgment of the workload (resulting in an excessive duration of the thesis). Consequently, a proposal is also enforced for external diploma theses where Prof. Decker is only the second reviewer.

Working on a Thesis

The work on the diploma thesis follows the detailed working plan established during the orientation phase: at first, the chosen approach has to be detailed. This step is then followed by the implementation of the approach, its analysis, and documentation. Eventually, the results have to be written down. The assessment of the thesis is based not only on the accurateness of the implementation and written elaboration but also on the student’s autonomy regarding defining the topic, reviewing the literature, and finding solutions. Additionally, a discerning review of design decisions and alternatives (from the computer science point of view and possibly also from the application-specific point of view) affects the assessment. For a practical thesis the following basic outline for the written elaboration can be used as a starting point (while it does in no way claim to be complete):

  • introduction to the topic of the thesis and clarification of the concrete task
  • review of literature on the given topic
  • given environmental constraints (hardware, software)
  • justification: why does the thesis make sense?
  • critically review literature: what can be used?
  • based on the previous chapter: develop a concept for the solution of the problem
  • this part must NOT contain any implementation details!
  • tool selection (e.g. programming language)
  • description of the implementation (no programming code, possibly architectural figures)
  • documentation of important design decisions
  • discerning evaluation of the realization: tests (performance etc.), possibly a case study, potential weaknesses of the implementation, reasonable extensions for the future, …
  • summary: what are the main results?
  • what do the results mean to the field of computer sciene?
  • outlook: what has to be done in the future?

The written elaboration is NOT documentation of the created programs. It shows the student’s ability to apply or develop computer science methods autonomously. Results taken from the literature have to be marked carefully to be distinguishable from the student’s own work. Programming notations like for example “if a=b then s1” must be formatted different from descriptive texts and other notations (e.g. mathematical expressions) to avoid misunderstandings. The thesis has to be written in English or German. A mixture of languages must be avoided.

Final Presentation

The final presentation takes place about 2-8 weeks after the final delivery. In contrast to the proposal presentation, the emphasis here is on the results achieved. The 20-45 minutes to be spent on the presentation should be used as follows:

  • short (!!) re-consideration of the problem
  • short review of relevant literature
  • presentation of the solution and to some degree also of design decisions
  • possibly a case study or application experiences

The latter two points are more important than the first two ones. While program code should not be presented, design decisions possibly can be explained. The student has to expect questions during and after the presentation.

Thesis presentation lengths (presentation time incl. Demo):

Your thesis advisor (usually a PhD student) should register a thesis presentation time slot with the respective thesis supervisor (usually a Professor).
