These templates are free for you to use as starting points for any research poster you need to make. Feel free to experiment with different colors, fonts, and layouts! 

Be sure to find out the size and orientation requirements of your poster before you begin designing. Most digital posters are either in the ratio 4:3 (standard size) or the ratio 16:9 (widescreen). The most common size for print posters is 48 inches wide by 36 inches tall. See our Getting Started page for more information on how to adjust the size of a slide.

All of these templates include a general UNC logo as part of the design. Although you are welcome to use the general logo, many schools encourage students, faculty, and researchers to use the logo that is specific to their school. You may not edit the logos in any way (other than resizing the logo in its entirety). Please see our page on using UNC Logos before including a logo in your poster.

Free PowerPoint ® research poster templates in various sizes & styles.

If you don't see the specific dimensions you want, use a template that is the same proportion and we will correctly scale it at the time of printing. because powerpoint does not allow dimensions greater than 56", we use scaled templates for the larger poster sizes. our 42x90 templates are actually sized at 21x45 which we then print at 200%. tip: before selecting a template, bear in mind that most poster session boards have a one-inch metal frame. reducing the poster by a few inches allows it to mount flat on the board without the edges curling. if you are allowed a 48" x 48" space, we recommend using a 44" x 44" template. similarly, for a 48" x 96" board, we recommend no larger than a 42" x 90" template.    click here to see a comparison of how they fit on a board..

Template for A0 sized poster (84.1 cm X 118.9 cm) commonly used for European conferences. If printing using the library's 36-inch poster paper, the poster will need to be trimmed (or scaled up if the conference allows for larger posters).

To design your own poster using PowerPoint:

• Choose Design on the ribbon
• Go to Page Setup
• Under Slides sized for click on the black arrow
• Choose Custom
• The height of the paper is always 36 inches
• Plan the flow for the information. Usually it is in columns from left to right, but a horizontal arrangement might work for some information.
• Dark text on light backgrounds is easiest to read on paper and uses less ink than an overall dark background. However, including some information boxes with light text on a dark background is OK.
• The width of the poster can vary up to 56 inches.

How to make posters longer than 56 inches

• Make the poster half the size that you want, then enlarge 200% when printing.
• For example, to make 36 x 60 poster, enter the dimensions 18 x 30. We will scale by 200% on the print setup.
• Font sizes of 16 point for text and 24 point for headings are readable when increased to 200%.
