Centuries prior to the French Revolution, the " World Formula " theory was proposed by Paracelsus which posited that the world was governed by mathematical formulas whose variables could be identified and altered. He aspired to change these variables in an attempt to erase suffering and bring happiness to humanity, which resulted in the event known as " Babel ." Innumerable calamities rocked the world to its core, causing massive amounts of death, and once it subsided new entities came into being in the world, primely the Vampire species . Deemed abominations before God, normal humans attempted to wipe out these new beings, and a race war ensued. This attempted genocide failed and Vampires began to hide their existences which came to be believed as no more than myth and legend, despite dwelling only one step beyond the human world.

Noé Archiviste , a young vampire living in late 19th century France, is sent by his Teacher to Paris to find the Book of Vanitas and discover its true nature. Supposedly, the Book of Vanitas is a cursed grimoire created by the Vampire of the Blue Moon from which the incurable disease Malnomen originates. Noé successfully discovers the Book on his way to Paris, as well as the person possessing it—a human calling himself Vanitas who uses the grimoire to cure Malnomen. Vanitas declares his goal to be the salvation of the entire race of Vampires, and Noé accompanies him for his entire journey, wishing to understand the true nature of not only the Book but also the enigmatic owner who wields it.

The story consists of Noé's memoirs on how he would come to eventually kill Vanitas with his own hands.

Terminology [ ]

Vampires [ ].

Though referred to as "vampires," the Vampire race within The Case Study of Vanitas are distinct from mythical vampires, and were in fact named after them for having certain similarities. The main distinguishing feature between Vampires and humans is the ability of Vampires to see and interact with the World Formula , allowing them certain superhuman abilities. Unlike mythical vampires, Vampires within The Case Study of Vanitas do not have to drink blood or harm others to survive, and the vast majority go their entire lives without harming humans. While most (but not all) Vampires do enjoy the taste of blood, it is not a biological need, and is compared to alcohol, smoking, or sex. Compulsive blood drinking only occurs in the case of blood addiction or Malnomen .

Most Vampires are born under the Crimson Moon, and have a natural fear of the Blue Moon. Those who are born under the Blue Moon, as in the case of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , are scorned and ostracized by other Vampirekind.

The Book of Vanitas [ ]

A cursed grimoire supposedly passed on to Vanitas by Vanitas of the Blue Moon themself. It is the originator of the disease Malnomen, created in revenge against Vampires for their prosecution of those born under the Blue Moon. The human Vanitas now has the Book of Vanitas within his possession and is the only person capable of using it. However, contrary to the Book's original purpose, Vanitas uses it to cure cases of Malnomen and desires to save the Vampire race.

Malnomen [ ]

A disease created by Vanitas of the Blue Moon . It attacks the True Name of vampires, causing their bodies and souls to warp. Those infected with Malnomen, usually called curse bearers, gradually grow insane and begin to obsessively search for blood, escalating until they assault and even kill others without hesitation. In addition, their bodies will corrupt, though the onset of physical symptoms appear to happen rapidly in the final stages of the disease. Once warping of the body occurs, the curse bearer will continue to attack others until it dies. Until very recently, there was no possible way to cure those infected with Malnomen, and thus all curse bearers would be sentenced to execution by decapitation once their condition was discovered. The human Vanitas reverse engineers the different forms of Malnomen to find and restore the curse bearer's True Name, curing them.

The Case Study of Vanitas is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki and began serialization in Square Enix's monthly shōnen magazine Monthly Gangan Joker on December 2015. There are currently nine tankōbon volumes collecting serial chapters released in Japanese. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press and published simultaneously with its Japanese release.

The Case Study of Vanitas is an anime television series adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. On March 28, 2021, Aniplex announced at AnimeJapan an anime adaptation for the manga, animated by the studio BONES. It started broadcasting on July 2, 2021.

Stage Play [ ]

Stage "Vanitas no Carte" is a stage play adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. Announced by the official Twitter account on October 28, 2021. The show was initially scheduled from January 21st to January 30th, 2022 at the THEATRE1010 (シアター1010), in Tokyo, Japan. An encore was performed from March 10th to March 12th, 2023 at the Sunshine Theater (サンシャイン劇場), in Tokyo, Japan.

10 Anime That Need To Get Darker To Get Better

While not every series needs to be dark, some modern anime like Black Clover or MHA could benefit from adopting more daring narratives.

A recent trend in anime has been a growing demand for darker, more mature storylines, even in genres that have previously been labeled lighthearted. Anime has featured plenty of grotesque stories throughout its long history, with some of the medium’s most influential works, such as Akira or Berserk , being extremely violent and gruesome. Yet, never before has the darkness been so sought-after in the mainstream.

The explosive popularity of gritty, fatalistic series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man , which, despite belonging to the shonen genre, take a lot of inspiration from seinen, signals that fans are done with bright and jolly anime clichés of the past. Today's audience is actually more interested in shows that dare to be violent and realistically macabre. And while not every series, or even every genre, needs this added layer of darkness to succeed, some modern shows would benefit from adopting the daring disquietude of their bleaker counterparts. An unwillingness to defy conventions and allow their plots to get harsher holds many excellent anime back, and they can’t truly become modern classics unless their stories embrace the darkness.

25 Darkest Anime That Only Get Darker

10 fans are getting tired of bungou stray dogs’ death scares, characters in bungou stray dogs have a lot of plot-armor, 25 must-watch detective anime.

Despite being a seinen series, Bungou Stray Dogs is a fairly lighthearted story by the genre’s standards. A thrilling fantasy centered on a group of superpowered detectives protecting their home city of Yokohama, the show became popular, first and foremost, thanks to its memorable characters. Yet, in how Bungou Stray Dogs chooses to approach their development lies the series’ biggest flaw.

Despite featuring multiple death scares, from fan-favorite Chuuya Nakahara almost drowning to Akutagawa Ryuunosuke near losing his head in the latest season, the show has been adamantly refusing to part with any major character for good. And while no fan wants to see their beloved heroes die, many are wondering just for how long Bungou Stray Dogs can continue getting away with fake deaths before it starts hurting its narrative.

Bungou Stray Dogs

Follows Atsushi Nakajima as he joins the Armed Detective Agency in battling the Port Mafia and other superhuman threats to public safety.

9 The Case Study of Vanitas Has Been Teasing Darker Developments for Long Enough

The case study of vanitas has yet to reach the soul-crushing darkness of its predecessor.

An aesthetically glorious shonen fantasy, The Case Study of Vanitas is commonly praised for its delectably alluring ambiance, memorable characters, and unique interpretation of two seemingly clichéd themes - vampires and Victorian-era mystery . Focused on the adventures of an unlikely duo - the noble vampire Noé and an enigmatic “vampire doctor” Vanitas - The Case Study of Vanitas has a reputation to uphold.

Coming from Jun Mochizuki, the mangaka behind Pandora Hearts , one of the most gut-wrenching shonen stories in history, the series, despite featuring plenty of unsettling themes, is yet to reach the same levels of soul-crushing darkness that made its predecessor famous. Thankfully, few doubt that Mochizuki will disappoint the fans of her dark and gut-wrenching storytelling style with the future direction of The Case Study of Vanitas .

8 My Hero Academia’s Cheerfulness Couldn’t Be Maintained till the Very End

Mha's kind-hearted nature would have been more popular decades ago.

The current shonen landscape is ripe with dark shows. As such, My Hero Academia always stood out from the rest as almost childish in refusing to abandon the genre’s lighthearted canons. Unfortunately, this also caused many to lose interest in the series over time, as, without an element of apprehensive tension, the plot about a group of superpowered high schoolers striving to become the best Heroes felt like it was going nowhere.

The aspects that would’ve made MHA a monumental shonen a few decades ago, like its kind-hearted underdog protagonist or whimsical high school setting, gradually stopped resonating with fans, who moved on to more mature shows. Yet, the most recent developments in the MHA manga might point to the show veering in an unexpectedly morbid direction .

My Hero Academia

7 spy x family needs to address the darker elements of its premise, spy x family seems to ignore the grander conflicts of the world.

Despite being, first and foremost, a family comedy , Spy x Family always possessed an underlying element of darkness. From its Cold War-esque setting to one of the main characters, Yor, being an assassin, the show allowed some macabre themes to peek through its facade of jovial fun. However, the series’ development might benefit from finally putting these dark story beats in the spotlight.

Many of the biggest mysteries and unresolved plot threads in Spy x Family - the truth behind Loid’s past, the grander conflicts of the show’s world, and, most importantly, the future of the Forger family - revolve around these bleaker themes. And, as the series nears the point of confronting these questions, it will have no choice but to get darker.

Spy x Family

A spy on an undercover mission gets married and adopts a child as part of his cover. His wife and daughter have secrets of their own, and all three must strive to keep together.

6 Classroom of the Elite Needs to Take Character Development More Seriously

Cheap drama interrupts moments where classroom of the elite could be darker, 10 best anime like classroom of the elite.

Dark anime doesn’t necessarily need to include gore or excessive violence, and some popular series would benefit from incorporating more realistically mature themes into its writing and character development. One of the aspects of Classroom of the Elite that made it stand out from other power fantasies with a genius protagonist is the series’ seeming willingness to give its characters grounded depth.

Yet, more often than not, the show’s attempts to explore Ayanokoji’s dark, troubled past or his schoolmates' macabre interpersonal problems are interrupted by cheap melodrama and childish harem antics. Even the protagonist’s infamous mind games, the part of the series fans find the most entertaining, waste much of their potential if there’s nothing substantial for the characters to lose.

Classroom of the Elite

When Kiyotaka enters government-sponsored elite high school, he finds out just how merit-based this education system is.

5 Black Clover Can’t Commit To Killing Characters

Black clover has excessive use of plot armor.

Inspired by such shonen classics as Hunter x Hunter, Bleach, and Yu Yu Hakusho , Black Clover has always maintained the same happy-go-lucky attitude in its storytelling the shonen franchises of the past were famous for. Yet, for this reason, many couldn’t take Asta’s underdog adventures in the world of magic.

The lack of meaningful character development, as well as excessive use of plot armor, has been holding Black Clover back from joining the ranks of the modern shonen greats since the very beginning. Deaths of significant characters are basically nonexistent in the series, and even if an important hero faces mortal peril like Julius Novachrono did in his fight against Patolli , their demise gets undone too easily.

Black Clover (2017)

Asta and Yuno were abandoned together at the same church and have been inseparable since. As children, they promised that they would compete against each other to see who would become the next Emperor Magus.

4 Mashle: Magic and Muscles Pulls Its Punches in Serious Moments

Mashle's comedy clashes with the tonal shifts.

When it comes to masterfully executing comedy beats, few modern shonen titles can compete with Mashle: Magic and Muscles. Watching Mashle, an overtrained boy with not an ounce of magical energy in him, beat powerful wizards into a pulp with the sheer strength of his muscles is always hilarious, and if the show chose to stick to just comedy, few things could’ve made it better.

Unfortunately, Mashle insists on pairing its humor with semi-serious shonen storytelling, and that aspect of the series could really benefit from improvements. Clichéd and needlessly edgy, serious plots like headmaster Wahlberg’s fight against Innocent Zero lack real stakes or grittiness that makes darker shonen comedies work.

Mashle: Magic And Muscles

Into a world of magicians is born Mash, a young boy who lacks magic but is the strongest person around. His existence and destiny will change his world.

3 Oshi no Ko Didn’t Get Much Darker After the First Episode

Oshi no ko contained all its bleakness in one episode.

A thrilling drama about the dark side of Japan’s entertainment industry , Oshi no Ko initially captivated everyone with its shocking first episode. The plot twist finale of the series’ opening act made everyone anticipate Oshi no Ko as a dark, mature drama that doesn’t shy away from the bleak realities of its subject matter, similar to Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue .

Regrettably, most of the series’ darkness was contained in that shocking first episode, and Oshi no Ko turned much more lighthearted as it went on. While following Aqua’s investigation doesn’t ever get dull, the series could really benefit from going back to its initial premise of exploring the darkness within show business.

A doctor and his recently-deceased patient are reborn as twins to a famous Japanese musical idol and navigate the highs and lows of the Japanese entertainment industry as they grow up together through their lives.

2 Dr. Stone’s Optimistic Storytelling Makes It Less Believable

Dr. stone refuses to take darker narrative turns.

For having one of the most original premises in modern shonen history, Dr. Stone does regrettably little with the tension and stakes that come with rebuilding civilization from zero in the Stone Age. Initially keeping the audiences captivated with Senkuu’s eccentric inventions and vibrant interactions with the people of the Stone World, the series turned less appealing as its focus shifted from science to quite predictable, low-stakes shonen battles.

Even death, something that seems infinitely more pressing and unavoidable in the Stone Age, is always preventable in Dr. Stone , be it thanks to Senkuu’s inhuman ingenuity or simple plot armor. As the world of Dr. Stone continues to expand, it actually loses much of its appeal due to the series’ unwillingness to take darker narrative turns.

Awakened into a world where humanity has been petrified, scientific genius Senku and his brawny friend Taiju use their skills to rebuild civilization.

1 One Piece Is at Its Best When It’s Allowed to Be Dark

Fans want one piece to lean into its darker tone.

While One Piece has a reputation for being extremely jovial, basically embodying the age-old “power of friendship” trope, the series has its fair share of dark moments. In fact, One Piece’s darkest storylines, from Ace’s death in Marineford to Sanji’s disquieting backstory in Whole Cake Island, are universally recognized as the series’ best.

Fans yearn to see the show take itself seriously more often. The Straw Hats’ voyage through the expansive seas of the Grand Line saw its fair share of tragedies. However, with the series now in its Final Saga, fans can’t help but anticipate One Piece leaning into its dark side more.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, the One Piece franchise explores the adventures of pirate Luffy D. Monkey and his crew, the Straw Hats. Since the manga first debuted in 1997, One Piece has been adapted into an ongoing anime that has seen multiple movies. Most recently it was adapted into a live-action series by Netflix.

Boeing released its first-quarter financial results Wednesday, and, despite the disastrous Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year and the ensuing public scrutiny the plane manufacturer has faced, the report was not as bad as expected . Revenue came in slightly higher than forecast, but still down 8% from the year before.

Boeing has a storied history that reaches back well over a century. Its current problems raise the question of how we got here — and magnify worries about American manufacturing at large.

Jerry Useem, a contributor to The Atlantic, joined “Marketplace” host Kimberly Adams to talk about Boeing and what he calls the dark age of American manufacturing . An edited transcript of their conversation is below.

Kimberly Adams:  You open your piece with a pretty stark comparison of Boeing of the past and Boeing of more recent days. Can you lay that out for me?

Jerry Useem:  Well, the comparison is a stark one in that early in Boeing’s existence, it paid very close attention to the process of manufacturing. And the original founder, Bill Boeing, had his office right in the building adjacent to the shop floor and would often stroll over and inspect individual pieces. And what we’ve arrived at now is a situation where the management of Boeing is very much detached from the actual building of its planes.

Adams:  Can you briefly sort of take me through the timeline of Boeing, of how they went from this superprestigious company that was doing everything in-house, had all of its engineers very plugged into what was going on, to what we’re learning as these investigations continue about such a disparate chain of events that led to, you know, the door blowing out on the plane and things like that.

Useem:  The timeline is kind of a long one. I think it was in the early 2000s that a lot of the key decisions were made. And airplanes are that kind of business where the errors of yesterday take a long time to show up. But around 2005, they really got serious about what they called offloading. And this meant doing less and less of the work in-house. You know, for some of its planes, having the wings built elsewhere, having the entire tail section built elsewhere. But they took this further and further. And I’d say, prior to the accident, it was beginning to recognize that it had taken this too far and was beginning to sort of reintegrate and try to make some steps to bring itself back to kind of its engineering-manufacturing roots.

Adams:  How common is what Boeing has done in the rest of American manufacturing?

Useem:  I think it’s actually not uncommon. It’s a very visible case for what I think has been a fairly pervasive phenomenon. I mean, as recently as the early 2000s, Intel was seen as the absolute last word in manufacturing prowess, and its CEO frankly admitted that it lost its edge on the shop floor. And they’ve pronounced what he’s called a “death march” to get back to leadership and the actual process of making things better, ensuring quality, etc.

Adams:  Yeah, one of the issues you point to in American manufacturing is that power in these companies like Boeing moved from engineers to financial managers. How did that happen, and what’s been the consequence?

Useem:  The engineers who first were sort of in charge of the executive suite when the American corporation came to be. Henry Ford and Bill Boeing, these were people who arose from the shop floor. And over time, it’s been pretty well documented that the CEO class came to be populated by people out of the finance function, which meant they spoke the language of numbers and accounting, they didn’t speak the language of engineering. And so those best equipped to understand how to put things together were no longer in charge. And I think that’s a process that’s now gone too long, gone too far.

Adams:  What’s the lesson for other American manufacturers to take from this situation? Not just, you know, what Boeing is doing right now, but how Boeing got to this point?

Useem:  I think the lesson is ignore the process of making at your peril. You know, a lot of people have set up the Boeing story as sort of a case of a company that’s put costs in front of quality. But the thing is, really what they’ve done is actually made it more expensive for themselves. I mean, they’ve had their production lines shut down. This is extremely costly. So you’ve got to find sustainable ways to keep on driving costs down, keep on improving quality. So it’s a matter of: Are you going to do it bluntly, by getting rid of your experienced workers, your advanced machine tools, and the managerial attention required to make those continual improvements? Or are you going to lean into it?
