The Knowledge Seeker: A YA Dystopian Novel by Rae Knightly is an epic adventure tale in a dystopian setting, 600 years in the future. Past civilizations of the ‘Enlightened People’ have disappeared in a total collapse caused by climate change and all-out wars. What remains are two feudalistic city-states engaged in a deadly struggle over the remnants of knowledge collected by one of them in their library of ancient printed books squirreled away from the ruins of past cities. All this knowledge, condensed in an ancient memory device, is entrusted to 16-year-old Eodain (nickname ‘Termite’) by the Grand Protector, so he can spread this knowledge to the whole world where it belongs. The story follows young Termite and a few of his helpers through hair-raising adventures, trials, and tribulations that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The narrative is from the first-person point of view, in the present tense, by the young Knowledge-Seeker and the language is expertly tailored to the target audience. In our current age of almost anti-science, denial, and misinformation, this is an extremely important book for young readers to learn and appreciate knowledge in all its forms. What I found delightfully unexpected was the use of leftover electronic technology, powered by still functioning solar panels from the Enlightened Era. This provides an intriguing contrast with the sword-wielding, horseback riding characters of the medieval setting. The characters are the usual antagonists representing good and evil in a classic struggle for all-out victory. The hair-raising adventures of young Termite are coupled with convincing inner monologues of the protagonist, projecting the conflicting emotions of the young crusader as he follows his sacred quest. I found the ending shockingly unexpected; it would leave any young reader gasping with a realization that they didn’t see it coming. I recommend The Knowledge Seeker by Rae Knightly to young adults who need all the encouragement to seek knowledge and humanistic values.

Jese Leos

Are you ready to embark on a thrilling journey through the pages of a young adult dystopian novel? Brace yourself for "The Knowledge Seeker," a riveting tale filled with adventure, rebellion, and the unstoppable thirst for knowledge. In this article, we will delve into the captivating world of this novel, exploring its essence, plot, characters, and its power to captivate young minds.

Unleashing the Essence of "The Knowledge Seeker"

In a society where knowledge is tightly controlled, and curiosity is deemed dangerous, young protagonist Ethan finds himself yearning for something more. Set in a dystopian future, the story paints a vivid picture of an oppressive regime that has successfully suppressed critical thinking, creativity, and the desire for exploration. However, Ethan possesses an insatiable curiosity that cannot be contained, leading him on a thrilling journey of self-discovery and rebellion against a system that seeks to keep its citizens ignorant and obedient.

The Riveting Plot

The story commences with Ethan's mundane existence, where life appears to have been reduced to nothing more than rigid routines and false contentment. But beneath the surface, a secret society emerges, dedicated to preserving knowledge and encouraging intellectual growth. Drawn towards this clandestine group, Ethan discovers a hidden library filled with forbidden books and ancient knowledge that challenges everything he has been taught.

4.5 out of 5

the knowledge seeker book review

Driven by his innate curiosity, Ethan embarks on a dangerous quest to uncover the truth about his world and the dark realities that lie beyond its controlled façade. Along his journey, he encounters unexpected allies and formidable adversaries, all driven by their own motivations and beliefs. The boundaries between right and wrong blur as Ethan is faced with difficult decisions, knowing that his actions may have far-reaching consequences for himself and those around him.

As the plot unfolds, "The Knowledge Seeker" explores themes of individuality, intellectual freedom, and the power of curiosity to ignite change. Through Ethan's struggles and triumphs, readers are encouraged to question the world they live in and examine their own thirst for knowledge.

Dynamic and Multifaceted Characters

The characters in "The Knowledge Seeker" are expertly crafted to resonate with young readers. Ethan, as the protagonist, embodies the restlessness and yearning for something more that many young adults experience. His journey is relatable, as he confronts the barriers of conformity and embarks on a path of self-discovery, highlighting the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of adversity.

Supporting characters add depth and complexity to the story. From enigmatic mentors who guide Ethan's quest, to loyal friends who share his rebellious spirit, each character plays a crucial role in unraveling the mysteries of this dystopian world. Some characters challenge longstanding beliefs, while others embody the consequences of blind obedience to authority.

An Intriguing Blend of Thrills and Philosophy

"The Knowledge Seeker" effortlessly blends pulse-pounding action with thought-provoking philosophical questions. As readers follow Ethan's journey, they witness heart-stopping chases, intricate puzzles, and adrenaline-fueled confrontations. Yet, amidst the excitement, the story also presents opportunities for readers to reflect on larger societal issues, such as the dangers of knowledge suppression and the importance of nurturing curiosity.

The novel masterfully explores the concept of knowledge as power, igniting a flame of rebellion and intellectual growth within its readers. It challenges the notion of unquestioning obedience and encourages critical thinking, making it an ideal choice for young adults seeking not only entertainment but also intellectual stimulation.

"The Knowledge Seeker" is an enthralling young adult dystopian novel that goes beyond conventional storytelling. It immerses readers in a world where the thirst for knowledge sparks rebellion against oppressive systems. The beautifully woven plot, relatable characters, and powerful themes make this novel a must-read for young adults who crave both adventure and intellectual exploration.

Prepare yourself to embark on a journey where curiosity paves the way for rebellion and unleashes the power of knowledge. Be captivated by "The Knowledge Seeker" and let it be a catalyst for your own intellectual growth and insatiable pursuit of truth.

Yet, here I am, barely sixteen-years-old, and it has fallen upon my shoulders to save what remains of humanity from a second Dark Ages.

Your civilization is gone now, lost six hundred years ago in cataclysmic wars brought on by climate change. Your virtual information vanished along with electricity. Knowledge seeker, the.

the knowledge seeker book review

What is your purpose in life? This is one of the questions Blair Stonechild explores in The Knowledge Seeker: Embracing Indigenous Spirituality .

In researching this book, Stonechild, a member of the Muscowpetung Saulteaux First Nation in Saskatchewan, interviewed numerous Aboriginal Elders. Among them is his mentor, Danny Musqua, who achieved the title of Knowledge Keeper, earning the right to pass sacred stories on to the next generation.

Stonechild’s exploration of Aboriginal spirituality is both philosophical and practical. According to him, Indigenous spirituality has a place far beyond the classroom, and the importance of this book is self-evident: “Indigenous spirituality holds the key for transforming our future.”

He explores the belief that when we die, we actually go home to the spirit world from which we came and reunite with the Creator. He also makes a strong case for reincarnation, citing several examples of children who spoke convincingly of having lived previous lives.

In looking at the larger picture of life, Stonechild views all people as one. “Humans are like leaves on a tree,” he says, “all thinking they are separate, but in reality connected together.” According to Aboriginal spirituality, the Creator is present in all things. All entities, including inanimate ones, are spirits and thus alive.

This 244-page book contains an index, bibliography, endnotes, glossary to translate words and phrases from Cree to English, and two black and white photos of Stonechild. One shows him in 1963 as a youth at the Qu’Appelle Indian Residential School in Lebret in southern Saskatchewan.

One feature of this book is Stonechild’s early educational experience – he survived the horror and trauma of the residential school system. “Despite the strict regime, I was reasonably content in residential school,” he says, fearing schoolyard bullies more than the authorities.

As a youngster, Stonechild had a mischievous streak. He and a friend once smoothed down their hair with butter so they could have a cool “duck tail” hairstyle like the bigger boys. On another occasion, they were caught red-handed raiding the food pantry. This cookie-stealing episode earned him the strap.

Stonechild earned a B.A. at McGill and an M.A. and PhD at the University of Regina. He was the first instructor hired at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, which later became the First Nations University of Canada. Along the way, he developed a keen interest in Aboriginal spirituality.

Stonechild’s purpose in life is to be a professor at the First Nations University of Canada. As a Knowledge Keeper himself, his ultimate purpose, as he so ably demonstrates in The Knowledge Seeker: Embracing Indigenous Spirituality , is to explore and share his wisdom with the Knowledge Seekers.

Do You Know the Places Mentioned in These Poems?

By J. D. Biersdorfer April 1, 2024

A green and white illustration of an open book in the grass.

A strong sense of place can deeply influence a story, and in some cases, the setting can even feel like a character itself. In a nod to the start of National Poetry Month, this week’s literary geography quiz celebrates poems about places. Even if you don’t know the poem, each question offers a hint about the location.

To play, just make your selection in the multiple-choice list and the correct answer will be revealed. Links to the poetry collections will be listed at the end of the quiz if you’d like to do further reading.

In 1914, Carl Sandburg published a poem that began:

Hog Butcher for the World, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler; Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders: What is the name of the city in the poem? (Hint: Despite having sports-team mascots that include Bulls and Bears, this city is not the high-finance capital of New York.)

Joy Harjo, a member of Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the 23rd poet laureate of the United States, reflects upon the tribal history of the Creek people and the impacts of colonialism on their former territory in a 1983 poem. That Creek land is now a major city along the Mississippi River and its name is the title of the poem. What is it? (Hint: The location is known for jazz and a fondness for pre-Easter parades.)

Minneapolis-St. Paul

New Orleans

Mary Oliver wrote many poems about the wooded areas and pond around her home in this East Coast community that has attracted creative people for decades. What is the name of the place, which is mentioned in “Coming Home,” a popular Oliver poem? (Hint: Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner were among the artists who also hung out here.)

Fire Island

Provincetown

Narragansett

A 1922 poem published in the collection “Harlem Shadows,” by Claude McKay, begins:

About me young careless feet Linger along the garish street;

Which garish New York City street is the poet talking about? (Hint: The name is also part of the poem’s title and yes, the street does get quite bright at night.)

42nd Street

125th Street

In this poem, Ada Limón — the current U.S. poet laureate — writes of two friends living in Brooklyn, but imagining:

and how sometimes it would be nice to see more sky than just this little square between the bridges and buildings, but then we’d miss Brooklyn and each other, and we ordered another beer. They talk of moving to which specific Western state? (Hint: Its name is included in the title of the poem; one of the state’s unofficial nicknames is “Big Sky Country.”)

North Dakota
