Undergraduate Summer Research Internships (USRI)

Information for faculty of health sciences faculty members and students.

Western Undergraduate Summer Research Internships (USRIs) provide undergraduate students with engaged research experiences under the mentorship of a faculty member and are intended to stimulate undergraduate students’ interest in research through direct exposure and hands-on experience conducting research. Through participation in this program, students gain valuable and high-impact research, technical, and professional skills that will help support academic and career development towards their future professional goals. Faculty mentors benefit from meaningful engagement, and assistance towards their research program, and can use the opportunity to further a diverse Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) training environment.

The USRI program was originally launched in 2020 as a pilot program and expanded to include professional development opportunities in 2021. Following the overwhelming success of the program in 2021 and beyond, Western Research, in partnership with Student Experience and Western Libraries, now offers the USRI fellows an expanded suite of professional development offerings. The professional development opportunities, which complement the engaged research-learning project, include sessions on scholarly writing, literature searches/reviews, citation management, GIS tools, knowledge exchange, resumes and CVs, research posters, equity, and diversity. Students have the opportunity to share their research with the broader community during a virtual exhibition event.

FHS has been allocated 41 USRIs for 2024 . Note that there will not be a separate allocation for cross-faculty application, i.e., undergraduate students from a Faculty outside of FHS counts as a part of the FHS USRI allocation.

Supervisor and Student Eligibility

  • Faculty members who hold a primary appointment in another Faculty at Western must apply via the USRI program of their home Faculty.
  • Subject to approval at the Faculty level, co-supervision is acceptable under this program and co-supervisors do not need to hold a research-eligible appointment in FHS.
  • Participation in program evaluation and demographic survey (at the end of the summer) is a condition of funding.
  • NEW THIS YEAR : FHS supervisors must have a named student co-applicant on their USRI application.
  • NEW THIS YEAR : Student-Supervisor Matching Support: FHS supervisors who have not yet identified a student co-applicant ("unmatched") have the option to submit a short description of their summer research opportunity for review by prospective students. Expressions of interest from prospective students will be shared with FHS supervisors to facilitate student-supervisor matching before the USRI deadline (see UNMATCHED SUPERVISORS tab for more information).
  • Participation in at least one EDID workshop as part of the Professional Development sessions is strongly recommended.
  • Participation in end-of-summer virtual student exhibition is encouraged and welcomed.
  • Faculties are encouraged to give preference to students completing 3rd year and/or returning students, but final decisions about internships are up to the Faculty.
  • Faculties are encouraged to give preference in their adjudication of applications to students from equity deserving groups, economically disadvantaged, and/or first-generation students.
  • Students must have been enrolled at Western in an undergraduate program in Winter 2024 and should be planning to attend Western in Fall 2024 as an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Specific dates of research engagement will be determined collaboratively with the faculty supervisor through the individual learning plan.
  • The USRI award should not be held concurrently with another paid student position.
  • Students must be selected by a supervisor and as co-applicant on the supervisor's USRI application.

Applying for a USRI

Please note that the application process has been updated from previous years: 1. All USRI applications must have a named student co-applicant (i.e., student-supervisory pairings must be made prior to the application deadline) 2. FHS has added (optional) Student-Supervisor Matching Support prior to final application submission. This will allow students and supervisors who have not yet found a match to be paired prior to the USRI deadline.

Unmatched Supervisors

  • If a supervisor has already identified a prospective student for an FHS USRI award, they may apply directly to the FHS USRI competition as a student-supervisor pairing (see MATCHED STUDENT-SUPERVISOR PAIRINGS tab).
  • Prospective "unmatched" supervisors should submit a 250-word broad description of the research opportunity and up to 5 research area keywords by Wednesday, January 31st 2024 via https://forms.office.com/r/WigkM6rnp3

  • Student evaluation and selection is the responsibility of the supervisor and will occur between February 20th to March 8th. Supervisors may elect to invite students for interviews as a part of their selection process, but this not mandatory and should not be conducted during reading week.
  • Once matched, student-supervisor pairings will be required to submit their FHS USRI application by Friday, March 8th 2024.

Unmatched Students

  • Prospective "unmatched" students must be selected for a student-supervisor pairing in order to considered for a FHS USRI award.
  • As part of the Unmatched Student Application Form, students will be able to apply to up to five research opportunities by completing a 250-word statement of interest for each opportunity and submitting a resume and unofficial transcript by Friday, February 16th 2024.
  • Complete the unmatched student application at https://forms.office.com/r/WWMuGX9UmU
  • Students will then be evaluated by unmatched prospective supervisors for possible selection as their USRI student co-applicant. Supervisors may elect to invite students for interviews as a part of their selection process, but this is not mandatory and should not be conducted during reading week.
  • Successful USRI student applicants will complete the FHS USRI application with their supervisor by Friday, March 8th 2024 (see MATCHED STUDENT-SUPERVISOR PAIRINGS tab).

Matched Student-Supervisor Pairings

Discovery of once theoretical methyl cation (CH3+) molecule

With Els Peeters and Jan Cami

Image of student in front of University College

Welcome to Western’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, where we passionately pursue knowledge about the fundamental laws that govern the Universe and all that it contains. Our interdisciplinary research investigates how matter, forces, and energy interact and shape objects and environments, from our own direct surroundings here on Earth to the event horizon of black holes in the distant reaches of the Universe. We are as curious about the practical applications of physics to medicine and the environment as the fascinating physics behind the largest structures in the cosmos! We bring that passion and curiosity into our student experience. Our students are an essential part of our community, and often key contributors to our research. We are dedicated to helping students and young investigators discover their potential by giving them guidance and support to become better scientists, community members, and people. We are excited to work with you at all stages of your career, to help develop your interests and achieve your goals.

Undergraduate Student Research Awards

The Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) program supports more than 3,000 students annually and is administered jointly by Canada’s three granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Applications for the USRA program must be completed and submitted  to the Canadian institution where you wish to hold the award  through NSERC’s online system. Selected applications are submitted to NSERC by institutions. No USRA applications may be submitted directly to the agencies.

Presently, CIHR and SSHRC USRAs are exclusively for Black student researchers. Institutions are assigned a specific allocation for these awards, as outlined in the  Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations  web page.

On this page

Important information, description, eligibility, value and duration of awards, location of tenure, supervision of the student at the institution, subject matter eligibility, san francisco declaration on research assessment, equity, diversity and inclusion, allocations, black student researchers, indigenous student researchers (for nserc only), application procedure, selection process, notification of results, payment of awards, travel allowances, use and disclosure of information.

  • Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations
  • Frequently asked questions about USRAs

Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRAs) are meant to nurture your interest and fully develop your potential for a research career in health, natural sciences and engineering, or social sciences and humanities. These awards are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies by providing research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting.

You are permitted to hold a USRA during a co-op placement. Your institution’s co-op office or USRA liaison officer (LO) may be able to assist you in finding a placement. LOs are institution administrators and usually work in your institution’s scholarship office.

To be eligible to  apply  for an award

  • you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the  Immigration and Refugee Protection Act  (Canada), as of the deadline date for applications at the institution
  • you must be registered, as of the deadline date for applications at the institution, in a bachelor’s degree program at an eligible institution
  • you must have obtained, over the previous years of study, a satisfactory cumulative average (normally at least B-; check with your institution)
  • you cannot be currently enrolled in an undergraduate professional degree program in the health sciences (e.g., MD, DDS, BScN)  (does not apply for CIHR USRAs)
  • you cannot be currently registered or have been previously registered, at any time, in a graduate program in the same field of study
  • you cannot have completed all your degree requirements

CIHR and SSHRC USRAs are, at the present time, exclusively for Black student researchers. To be considered, you must self-identify as Black (see the Black student researchers section for more details).

In addition

  • if you already hold a bachelor’s degree and are studying toward a second bachelor’s degree, you may still apply for this award
  • you may hold only  one  USRA per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31)
  • you may hold a maximum of  three USRAs  throughout your undergraduate career (regardless of the granting agency)

To  hold  an award

  • you must have completed all course requirements for at least the first year of study (or two academic terms) of your bachelor’s degree
  • you must have been registered in a bachelor’s degree program at the time of application and in at least one of the two terms immediately before holding the award
  • you must be working full time in eligible research and development activities in your proposed field of research during tenure of the award
  • you cannot be registered in a graduate program
  • You may hold an award at any time during the year as permitted by your academic program.
  • Tenure may start on a date acceptable to both you and your host institution.
  • USRAs have a value of $6,000, and the host institution is required to supplement the award.
  • The duration of the award is 14 to 16 weeks on a full-time basis.
  • The activities conducted during the tenure of the USRA are governed by the agreements, including employment agreements (if applicable), you have with the host institution and the relevant terms and conditions of awards.
  • The agency’s contribution is  paid directly to the host institution  and is included in the funds that you receive.

The USRA program makes no provision for sick leave or vacation, or for other types of interruptions. Should a USRA be interrupted or terminated early for any reason, the agencies must be informed immediately.

Without exception, USRAs are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions with an assigned allocation. Awards must be held at the institution where the offer of award originates.

An eligible supervisor is a person authorized by the institution to independently supervise students. Your institution will decide if your proposed supervisor is eligible. You must work under the supervision of a person who has been approved by the institution.

NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.

You must ensure that you are submitting your application to an institution that has an allocation for your selected agency (refer to the  Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations  web page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency).

If the granting agency determines your application was submitted to the wrong agency based on the subject matter, it will be transferred accordingly (refer to Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency web page for more information).

It is not necessary for your proposed supervisor’s research program to be exclusively within your selected agency’s field of study (health, natural sciences and engineering, or social sciences and humanities).

NSERC is a signatory to the  San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) . To promote NSERC’s support of research excellence in Canada and incorporate the principles of DORA, NSERC has developed  Guidelines on the assessment of contributions to research, training and mentoring . The guidelines highlight NSERC’s commitment to excellence in research funding and aim to ensure that a wide range of research results and outcomes are considered and valued as part of the assessment process.

The three agencies are acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the  Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and is aligned with the objectives of the Tri-agency EDI Action Plan .

When preparing the research proposal, supervisors are encouraged to consult the  NSERC guide on integrating equity, diversity and inclusion considerations in research web page.

Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned a separate allocation of awards to offer from each agency. Institutions must respect the agency-specific allocation of awards. Refer to the  Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations  web page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency.

For NSERC:  Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Black student researchers for USRAs beyond their allocation of awards.

For CIHR and SSHRC:  At the present time, CIHR and SSHRC USRAs are exclusively for Black student researchers. Institutions are assigned an allocation of awards, as outlined in the  Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations  web page. To be eligible to apply for these awards, you must self-identify as Black by checking the relevant box within the application form. Note that this self-identification information will be shared with the institution to which you are applying and, if awarded, publicly. Refer to the  Instructions for completing an Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) application – form 202  web page for more information.

Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Indigenous student researchers for USRAs beyond their allocation of awards.

To apply for these awards, you must complete and submit an application using NSERC’s online system. Refer to the  Instructions for completing an Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) application – form 202  web page for more information.

You can apply to more than one institution. You must apply directly to the institution where you would like to hold the award. However, please note that it is the institution’s choice whether to accept candidates from other institutions.

Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned an allocation of awards to offer each year. Refer to the  Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations  web page for a list of allocations by institution and agency.  Note:  CIHR’s and SSHRC’s allocations are, at the present time, exclusively for Black student researchers.

The selection process of USRA applications will be carried out by institutions with an allocation and will be based on the following three selection criteria:

  • academic excellence
  • research potential
  • expected quality of the training and mentorship to be received

All application and review processes are internal to the institution. It is the institution’s responsibility to establish its own selection criteria within the broad guidelines that the agencies provide. Institutions have the discretion to apply stricter selection criteria than those outlined above. When selecting students for awards, the institution will take into account the objectives of the USRA program. For details on the institution selection procedures, refer to the  Guidelines for Undergraduate Student Research Awards liaison officers or contact the USRA LO at the institution where you would like to hold the award.

Each eligible institution sets its own internal deadline dates for receiving applications. For information about these dates, contact the USRA LO at the institution where you intend to apply for an award.

Although awards may be held in the summer, fall or winter term, each institution will determine the number of selection processes it holds each year.

Each institution will inform applicants of its award decisions after it has completed its selection process. To find out if your application was recommended to the agencies, contact the USRA LO at your institution. Recommended candidates approved by NSERC and SSHRC will receive an award letter on SharePoint midway through their award. Recommended candidates approved by CIHR will receive an award letter by email. Award letters should be read carefully and kept for future reference.

Once the relevant agency has approved your USRA for tenure at one particular institution, you  may not  transfer it to another institution.

You will receive your payment from the institution. The institution will issue payments to you for the total value of the award in accordance with its pay procedures. It will also issue a T4 or T4A slip (statement of income) to you at the end of the calendar year.

NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC will pay their respective contributions directly to the institution.

Travel allowances are not provided by the granting agencies.

All personal information collected as part of this program is used by the agencies and by the relevant officials at the eligible research institutions to review applications and to administer and monitor awards. It may also be used to determine the most appropriate funding jurisdiction, or to monitor overlap in federal support. Details on the use and disclosure of this information by the agencies are described by CIHR on the Info source – Sources of federal government and employee information  web page, by NSERC on the  Use and disclosure of personal information provided to NSERC  web page, by SSHRC on the Collection, use and disclosure of personal information  web page and in the relevant program literature.

Each agency may publish the names and other limited award information of award holders on their websites in accordance with the agencies’ policies on disclosure under the  Access to Information Act  and their  Privacy Act  policies and guidelines related to the collection, use, retention and disposal of personal information. For more information, consult the Access to Information Act  and the Privacy Act .

For more details regarding CIHR’s use of personal information, refer to the Undergraduate Student Research Awards details on CIHR’s Funding Opportunity  web page.

The first point of contact regarding the USRA program should be the USRA LO at the institution where you intend to apply for an award or where you are currently registered in an eligible program of study.

For general information about the USRA program, policies and guidelines contact NSERC staff by email at  [email protected] .

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

How do I know which projects/supervisors are eligible for NSERC USRA funding?

NSERC has revised its funding eligibility requirements to include  any project description  that clearly falls within the Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) research domain.  Refer to  NSERC’s Eligibility Criteria for Students and Fellows  for additional information. It is not necessary for your proposed Project Supervisor’s research project to be exclusively within the NSE.

All research projects are eligible for a STAR Award.

Will the 2024 Undergraduate Research Awards continue if the university closes due to the COVID-19 pandemic?

Potential Project Supervisors have been asked to indicate if their project will be in-person, remote or hybrid. This will be noted with each project description for student applicants. Full-time research activity on-site at the university will need to follow all local and provincial health guidelines and university requirements.

The Statement of Interest requires an e-signature (endorsement signature) from the potential Faculty Project Supervisor. Is this signature necessary? How do I get it?

To be considered for a specific project, students must obtain the Project Supervisor’s e-signature (endorsement signature) on their Statement of Interest form. The form is uploaded by the student to the URA Application Form. Statement of Interest forms that do not have an endorsement signature (for each of the research projects the student is applying to) will not be accepted and the application will be deemed incomplete. Project Supervisors have the right to decline to sign your application if they feel you do not have the necessary skills for their research project. We recommend that you contact any prospective Project Supervisor(s) well in advance of the application deadline to discuss your interest in the research project. Project Supervisors may want to meet virtually before endorsing a candidate. You should discuss your interest in the project, skills and qualifications during your virtual meeting. We strongly recommend that you bring an unofficial copy of your transcript to this meeting.

I am currently in the fourth (or last) year of my degree; can I still apply for the Undergraduate Research Awards program?

Yes. A fourth-year student can apply for the Undergraduate Research Awards program provided that the student meets the following eligibility criteria:

  • The student is registered in a university undergraduate program at the time of application.
  • The student does not hold higher degrees in the natural sciences or engineering (e.g., Graduate, Masters, PhD).
  • The student will not be commencing a graduate program in the natural sciences or engineering before September 2024.

I am an international student enrolled in an undergraduate program at Ontario Tech University; am I eligible for an Undergraduate Research Award?

International students registered in a bachelor’s degree program at Ontario Tech University are eligible to receive the Ontario Tech STAR Award. The NSERC USRA is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada, according to NSERC.

My cumulative GPA is below the requirement; should I still apply?

The minimum cumulative GPA is required to receive an Undergraduate Research Award. Please connect with us directly at  [email protected]  for tracking purposes to inform future decisions.

I am not an Ontario Tech University student; am I eligible to hold an award?

Students who are not registered at Ontario Tech University may apply for an NSERC USRA as long as they are a Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and meet all other eligibility criteria (e.g. minimum GPA, etc.). STAR awards are only available to Ontario Tech students. Non-Ontario Tech students: Please complete the same application form as internal students.

I am not an Ontario Tech University student; is my application process different?

Non-Ontario Tech student applicants will submit through the same form as internal students. If you have any issues, please contact [email protected] .

External applicants must upload a copy of their transcript with the URA Application Form.

How do I complete the transcript request form? I am an Ontario Tech student (internal student).

You must complete and submit the Request for Official Record of Transcript form linked in the URA Application. You do not need to submit this to the Office of the Registrar and you do not need to pay for this - simply complete the form and upload it within your URA Application.

My transcript is being ordered from another university; what if it doesn't make the application deadline?

It is the responsibility of the applicant requesting official transcripts from institutions outside Ontario Tech University to ensure enough time is given for the transcript to arrive by the application deadline. You should contact the transcript office at your institution to ask about delivery times and plan accordingly. To ensure fairness, late transcripts will not be accepted and the corresponding applications will not be considered for awards. Please have your Official Transcript sent to you directly. Non-Ontario Tech Applicants will upload their transcript directly into the URA Application Form.

Can I apply to a research project in a faculty other than my own?

You may apply to projects outside of your faculty as long as you hold the skills and qualifications listed in the project summaries on our website.

What is the spacing requirement and page limit for the Statement of Interest?

The Statement of Interest is limited within the application form to just less than one page.

Can I apply to more than one project?

Yes. We encourage students to choose two projects they are interested in so they have a backup in case their first choice is awarded to another student. You can apply to a maximum of two projects across all faculties. Be sure to rank your projects in order of preference on your application.

Do I need a separate application or Statement of Interest for each project I apply to?

Students may submit only  one  application and  one  Statement of Interest. If you are applying to two research projects, you must list both projects on your application form and discuss both projects in your Statement of Interest. Be sure to rank your projects in order of preference on your application.

Will including a resume/CV help my application?

Please do not include a resume/curriculum vitae (CV) with your application. If you submit one, they will be removed from your application package. This will ensure all selection committees choose successful applicants in a fair manner using the same required information for each applicant.

How do I submit my application?

Please click on the blue 'Apply Now' button at the top of this page to submit your application.

How will I know my application has been received?

Please check that you received a confirmation email to your .NET account. Email  [email protected]  if you require additional confirmation.

If I miss the deadline to submit my application, is there a chance it will still be accepted?

No. To ensure fairness and to allow us to start the application review procedures immediately, the deadline is firm and late applications will not be accepted after the deadline date and time has passed. For this reason, we encourage students to plan ahead. Remember to email Project Supervisors in advance of the application deadline to request their endorsement signature.

I have received an Undergraduate Research Award - when and how will I receive my award funds?

This information will be outlined in your official Award Letter. Award letters are distributed beginning in March on a rolling basis.

Are award funds taxable?

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations require the university to issue T4A statements for all awards/scholarships/bursaries disbursed in a given calendar year.  An award is not subjected to any tax deductions at source (income tax, CPP or EI) and the university will issue a T4A statement reflecting the value of the award received for the calendar year. This does not eliminate your own tax responsibilities and you may wish to set aside funds to cover income tax obligations upon filing your tax return.

My question was not answered in this list - who do I contact?
