Donations: Get Your Act Together, CR UK!!!
I have nothing but respect for the work Cancer Research UK do, but like many similar charity organisations, there seems to be this strange, often rude and dismissive attitude towards those wishing to donate. I have often left bags out on collection day only to still find them languishing on the doorstep come the end of the day. Recently, I called the number on the bag and left a message to report this pattern. Radio silence ensued despite the promise to return the call. I'm not expecting a thank you written on embossed paper and delivered by a unicorn but a little gratitude would be nice.

I would give it zero if I could
I had trouble buying the stand up for cancer star baker apron, but eventually managed. I ordered in fggo time for a birthday gift. My expectations for the CRUK brand were high as I respected their work. However, this was peroved to be totally missplaced. The 5 to 7 day delivery came an went. No communication at all to let me know. I emailed and was told it was a Royal Mail error and it had happened to many. Looked at the tracking number they eventually send and RM has not had it yet. I called almost 20 days after the order to be told, there is nothing they can do, they have no idea where it is etc, etc. A completed customer service rail crash. Angry and frustrated an dweill NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN. All donations will stop also.

Not a penny more for this charity
I have given a lot of money to Cancer Research over the years, both direct donations, via fundraising and donations to the shops. I took a lot of valuable items to the Bromley store last week including a couple of iPads only to be told by an indignant assistant 'we are NOT taking donations at the moment'. I'd walked a long way with three large and heavy bags so was not best pleased! I get plenty of begging letters from them for fund raising so they could have sent an email to say the shop was not accepting donations or put something on the website. So it's Cancer Research's loss. They have become just another large, arrogant organisation. ***UPDATE*** I was promised a call by one of the 'sales' staff at C/R, but nobody bothered. By the way, the CEO of Cancer Research is paid OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION. How many people might have lived if that money had been spent on cancer patients, instead of a Fat Cat CEO

I worked at the Falmouth store
I worked at the Falmouth store. I took time off sick due to anxiety and depression due to the nasty manager, the hours I covered for her whilst her bus was so called late or she was ill or just never turned up. She's nasty to the volunteers and nasty to me the way she speaks to people is absolutely shocking, if you knew how this shop was run you wouldn't go there. There all about money don't care about family life and headoffice is the same . Avoid working for this company

Hamza saves the day!
Like many others, I would have given a one star, if not for one member of their team who saved the day. My cousin died a couple of weeks back and for various reasons I was unable to go to the funeral. As a way of marking his passing, I made a donation to CR in his name. I was guaranteed that I would receive an Email acknowledging the donation that day, so I could send it to his wife. Despite that lie, I had to chase the Email up twice. Eventually I got through to Hamza, who agreed that it wasn't acceptable. I'm not sure it was Hamza's job to do so, but he personally compiled an Email and sent it to me within the hour. Over a week later I received the official Email, which of course would have been too late to send. And I think Hamza's wording was better than the official one, which just came across as a Begging letter. CR, unacceptable! Hamza, well done, thank you. I'm not sure I'll bother in future.

Overpriced Charity Shops
I have been to multiple Cancer Research UK charity shops and all of them have insane prices. They sell clothes for the same price you could get them new. Other than that, they stock decent quality items and have shops in good locations.

Expecting contractors to fund their projects
Recruited building services professionals to mange their shops, had works planned and instructed only to be told that they expect contractors to “fund” their projects on “good faith” and they will only have budget in April 2024 (2.5 months from now) to pay the contractors. Totally unreasonable and out of the blue, how such a big charity can operate with poor management is shocking.

Keeping my money
Order a surgical bra and paid £6.99 for next day delivery. Two days later no sign of the bra nor confirmation of despatch. Received an automated email response to my emailed enquiry, saying expect a reply in 5 days. Call up, unhelpful woman … need to talk to despatch department can’t say when she’d have a reply, never mind when I could expect to receive the item I’d paid for. Asked for my order to be cancelled and a full credit, to which she replied it takes 15 days to process a refund. 15 days!!!! That’s not due to bank rules and process. That’s Cancer Research policy. A clear case of Cancer Research wilfully holding onto my money. So, long story short, I’m out of pocket for 15 days. Disgrace and has left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth for what I had previously thought was a wonderful charity and one for whom I have raised funds for over the years. They should be ashamed.

Started volunteering at the store in AbbeyGate Street. I was made very welcome. Beverley the shop manager made me feel at ease and the volunteers there that day made me feel I was part of a team . Beverley did a great job at the induction and I look forward to my next shift . Anyone looking to volunteer for the charity pop in and ask for more information.

Changing shape of charity shops
People go into charity shops to get a bargain. If an item is, for instance, £2.80, why not make it £3 initially instead of asking customer to round up to £3, as directed by Head Office. Also asking people 'if they gift aid' is fine but 'do you pay tax' is not. That is an intrusive question, which I object to being asked. Staff should hand out a leaflet about gift aid for customer to read for themselves. Finally, most of the good quality donations don't reach the shop floor, but, go on eBay. I know Cancer Research has to rely on donations for their income but the shops are beginning to be run like businesses. Targets are expected to be reached.

Prices too high …
Visited the Amersham shop today and found the prices extremely high! People go into a charity shop not only to support the charity but to pick up a bargain. Some of the second hand goods were dearer than they would be new. Needless to say I didn’t see anyone buy anything. These high prices aren’t doing the charity any favours. Won’t be returning!!

Worthless charity
Cancer research UK does next to nothing in terms of cancer treatment. Most of the current treatments have not changed in 30 years. The fact remains that more people are dying of cancer than ever before. The CEO earns £240,000 plus per year, so if you like funding hefty salaries then please continue to donate. Having recently lost a family member to cancer, I realised that treatments available are virtually worthless. If you are young enough and fit enough to cope with chemotherapy, then you stand a fighting chance; but if you are old and weak then your chances of surviving cancer are almost zero. 12/4/24. Their latest advert slogan is a joke "Together we are beating cancer". No we are not beating cancer. Cancer now riddles our society. It was hardly heard of in the 60's.

Greed, money making no care for the people
Here goes , im sick and tired of you guys begging on tv its excessive. If you truely cared about people and cancer youd actually look into alternatives You'd look into cannabis Herbs like tumeric You'd look into other routes instead of solely basing it on kemo which is mainly money money money.. while also pumping out multiple side effects. You'd promote a better diet an alkaline diet All of which will help not only cancer coming in the first place but will help reduce if not remove all together!!! Start fighting the government more and You'd get respect far more from far more people.

Disappointed
I recently went to drop off some donations to the Bromsgrove branch, I called first to explain what I had got, I was asked what I was donating, after telling me they were very busy, I eventually got some help to bring the donations inside, and was told ‘we don’t want any more than that’! And was asked again, what was in the bags. I’ve never had this kind of issue before, I felt like taking it elsewhere where it might be a little more appreciated. CRUK has been an important charity for me in the past, I’m hoping that the member of staff was simply having a bad day.

Cancer Research UK superstore opens in Bristol
16 April 2021
Two new Cancer Research UK superstores officially opened their doors this week, as 500 shops also reopened to the public.
Leading cancer scientist Professor Richard Martin was on hand to cut the ribbon at a large-scale charity shop in Bristol’s Brislington Retail Park – which also includes a brand new coffee shop, Coffee Together. A new superstore in Newport – the largest Cancer Research UK outlet in Wales – was also unveiled on Wednesday 14 April.
It’s hoped the new stores will play a role in the charity’s recovery from the loss of income from COVID-19, generating funds for life-saving research.
“Every day, every pound counts, so I hope people in Bristol will support this new superstore so that we can help keep making discoveries.” – Josephine Mewett, head of retail operations at Cancer Research UK
‘To save lives tomorrow, we need the public’s support today’
The Bristol superstore will be stocked with everything from furniture to electrical items, clothing and soft furnishings – while Coffee Together will offer a range of barista hot drinks, sandwiches, salads and a selection of healthy snacks.

Strict health and safety measures will be followed in Bristol and Cancer Research UK shops across the UK to ensure customers can shop, volunteer can return and supporters can donate goods safely.
Cancer Research UK shops typically contribute more than £25 million a year to our life-saving work to beat cancer.
“We support thousands of scientists and world-leading initiatives in all parts of the UK, all with the aim to improve the lives of people with cancer,” added Mewett.
“But to save lives tomorrow, we need the public’s support today.”
As well as the two new superstores, 500 of the charity’s 600 shops have reopened this week, with the remaining Scottish shops set to reopen on Monday 26 April. A date has yet to be confirmed for the reopening on non-essential retail in Northern Ireland.

As well as clothes, the Bristol superstore also sells gardening supplies, homeware and books.
A safe environment
Cancer Research UK is accepting donated items as usual but recommends people call ahead to arrange a drop off time with their local store. The charity’s superstores are located in retail parks across the UK with plenty of parking and storage space to accept items set aside during lockdown clear-outs.
The health and wellbeing of staff, volunteers, donors and customers is paramount and the charity is continuing to follow government guidelines across all our stores.
This includes social distancing, controlled shopper numbers, hand sanitiser stations, cough guards at till points, face coverings for shop staff and volunteers, and additional cleaning. Fitting rooms will be closed until further notice and we encourage contactless payments.

Cancer Research UK’s staff and volunteers are looking forward to welcoming you to the new store.
Cancer Research UK is also encouraging anyone considering volunteering to pop into their local shop to make enquiries or check online if the shop needs extra help. Even an hour a week can make a difference.

Exploring knowledge sharing approaches in NIHR research: a systematic review
Evidence on the effectiveness of knowledge sharing techniques and approaches in National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded research could be improved, according to a newly published systematic review, which was supported by the NIHR Dissemination and Knowledge Mobilisation team.
The study, published in BMC Health Research Policy and Systems , looked at NIHR funded research that described knowledge sharing techniques or approaches. The researchers concluded that there is little evidence of the effectiveness of these approaches in these studies in influencing change in practice or ongoing research. However, this doesn’t mean they aren’t effective in instigating change or impacting on practice, rather that clear evidence for this has not yet been produced.
Although a complex and often messy field, there are theories, models and frameworks that can be used to shed more light on techniques and approaches that currently show promise but lack evidence for their effectiveness.
The authors searched databases for published NIHR-funded studies that described knowledge sharing between researchers and stakeholders like clinicians, policymakers, patients and the public. Through screening, they identified 17 relevant studies.
They found five main knowledge sharing techniques or approaches:
- Embedded researcher / practitioner models
- Knowledge brokers
- Stakeholder engagement (workshops, events)
- Involvement of non-researchers in research / service design
- Organisational collaborative partnerships
Seven studies reported creating new knowledge through these approaches, but only one showed an actual change in practice resulting from an embedded researcher model.
The use of an explicit theory or framework to guide the knowledge sharing process was limited, with only six studies using one.
Evaluations often focused more on acceptability rather than effectiveness in creating new knowledge or change.
The authors conclude that while promising approaches exist, there is little evidence yet of their effectiveness in influencing real-world change in policy and practice. They recommend clearer reporting, use of theories and frameworks, and evaluations linked to intended outcomes.
Dr Helen Baxter , lead author of the study, NIHR Senior Research Fellow (Knowledge Mobilisation) and Research Fellow in Knowledge Mobilisation and Implementation at NIHR ARC West said:
“We know that knowledge mobilisation techniques are used in NIHR funded research, especially research conducted by Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs). However, our systematic review has shown that reporting on the use of these approaches, and their effectiveness, is patchy. There is an opportunity to improve the evidence around knowledge mobilisation approaches, specifically in relation to NIHR funded research, but potentially more broadly too.”
Dr Alyson Huntley , Senior Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis at the Centre for Academic Primary Care , University of Bristol, and co-author of the study, said:
“Capturing the current status of knowledge sharing techniques and approaches that create new knowledge in this systematic review is of crucial importance to stakeholders. The next step is to assess the effectiveness of these approaches in influencing change in practice or policy.”
Paper: The effectiveness of knowledge-sharing techniques and approaches in research funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR): a systematic review by Helen Baxter, Lindsey Bearne, Tracey Stone, Clare Thomas, Rachel Denholm, Sabi Redwood, Sarah Purdy and Alyson Louise Huntley. Published in BMC Health Research Policy and Systems. April 2024.

Vanessa's Story
I’ve entered the Great Bristol 10k as I wanted to give something back to cancer research and to raise awareness.
I did my first run 4 years ago, so I am not completely new to running and it will be great to run in such a popular event with so many other people doing it for great causes.
I have chosen to run for Cancer Research UK because my auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year, she had the lump removed along with 3 lymph nodes with 1 having cancer in. Therefore, she has had to undergo chemotherapy and will soon begin radiation therapy.
She has been incredibly strong and brave throughout the treatment process by taking everything in her stride and I am so proud of her, she has been a true inspiration for those fighting cancer. I want to be able to raise money that will help continue lifesaving research and to be able to help give back for the amazing treatment and support my auntie has received.

Students tackle gap in black and brown skin cancer diagnosis.
Press release issued: 11 April 2024
Three medical students are solving the shocking disparity in skin cancer care between those with dark skin and those with white skin.
Stunned to learn that UK doctors were far more likely to misdiagnoses skin cancers in those with black or brown skin, University of Bristol medical students Mariana Wickramarachchi, Harvey Hill and Elizabeth Maregere decided to act.
Their start-up DermSpectrum is building the UK’s most diverse and advanced skin image bank, to teach students and clinicians how to diagnose skin conditions regardless of colour.
In the US, 5-year skin cancer survival rates are 70% for black people and 92% for white people. In the UK, equivalent studies are not widely available – but a study of GPs found they were much more likely to misdiagnose melanomas in dark skin.
The students hope that improving early diagnosis of skin cancer in black and brown people will save lives, improve equality and lighten the load on the NHS. Upskilling students before they qualify is key. After surveying students at UK medical schools, they found trainee doctors were nearly twice as confident at diagnosing conditions on white skin compared to skin of colour.

9 reviews and 5 photos of Cancer Research UK "This is one of my favourite charity shops. They have more books, clothes, CDs and videos than most, and they're all really cheap. There's always something interesting hidden here somewhere, and the staff are ...
I have been to multiple Cancer Research UK charity shops and all of them have insane prices. They sell clothes for the same price you could get them new. Other than that, they stock decent quality items and have shops in good locations. Date of experience: 05 March 2024. Useful.
