Argonne awarded $6 million to develop technologies for recycling nuclear fuel

Awarded $4.9 million by ARPA-E, pyroprocessing engineers in Argonne’s Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies division will work with industry partners Oklo Inc. and Deep Isolation to increase the efficiency of the process used to convert UNF oxides to metals. They’ll do so using stable, next-generation anode materials and incorporating new process and product monitoring technologies.

Radioisotopes can be produced artificially from stable nuclei through the interaction with particles or highly energetic photons.
