Jetniphat Sasing directed Thesis . Here’s the synopsis…

“This thriller begins when a herb called Chalawan is sent to a fourth-year student of the Botany faculty, Nawa. Wanting to know the source of the rare plant, Nawa invites his friends Burin, Namwhan, Champagne, Fifa, et al. to travel through the western forest to meet with his relative Phee Sak who discovered the Chalawan plant.

“They meet with the village leader Ongsu at the lagoon deep in the forest who tells them Phee Sak has already left. He also tells them that the Chalawan herb they’re looking for is on an island far away. Importantly, gathering the herb can only be attempted at twilight.

“As the journey of finding the Chalawan plant progresses, so too do the past relationships of each member. All the while, the darkness creeps up on them and they discover they’re in danger of falling prey to an ancient crocodile.”

thesis 2022 movie

Now streaming on:

"Redeeming Love" is based on a best-selling novel by Francine Rivers , set during the California Gold Rush and inspired by the Biblical story of Hosea, a prophet, who married Gomer, an unfaithful woman. Publisher’s Weekly said about the book, “Writers like Rivers are why people buy Christian fiction,” and, as with the film, for some people that will be a recommendation and for others a warning. The novel has a lot of passionate fans who will want the movie to be exactly what they imagined on the page, and that is what they will find. It is sincerely made, with exceptionally attractive actors who give heartfelt performances in some beautiful settings, in a story that fits comfortably and reassuringly into a particular spiritual world view. For those who do not share that view or the storytelling traditions of giving oral testimony about horrific challenges leading to a connection to God, the film will not be as satisfying.

The title makes it clear that there will be no ambiguity about where it is going. First there will be sin and then there will be redemption through prayer. As Shakespeare said, though, the heroine in this story is “more sinned against than sinning.” She is called Angel (the angelically lovely Abigail Cowen ) and the man who will help her find redemption is Michael Hosea ( Tom Lewis ). I already pointed out the lack of ambiguity, but just to be even clearer, in the spirit of a movie that really spells everything out, it begins with a bunch of people panning for gold in the muck, one jubilantly finding a shining nugget.

Angel is the most sought-after prostitute in the town, so prized that there is a daily lottery to be with her. We first see her gazing dully out of the window as behind her a man puts money on the table before he leaves. One of the other young women from the brothel tells her, “You’ve got to hope for something more in this world.” Angel says she gets by because “I never look back and never look forward.” That is not exactly true as there are a bunch of flashbacks as she does look back, giving us several flashbacks to see the horrific abuse she has suffered.

Michael is a farmer who prays for a wife. He is led to Angel. He goes to the brothel and pays for her time but just talks to her. She is so traumatized that she is incapable of responding to kindness or even simple decency. He does not give up, though he wryly admits, “The next time I pray for a woman to share my life I’m going to be much more specific.” Finally, he gets her to marry him. Though she goes with him to the farm, she tells him she will only “play along until I pay you what I owe you.” He is so gentle and respectful that she begins to trust him, and so she leaves because she cannot be the woman she thinks he deserves. There will be more abuse and more healing before, well, see the title.

The relentlessness of the litany of tragic pain and loss inflicted on Angel, including incest, suicide, theft, abortion, child molestation, abandonment, sex trafficking, arson, and much more, may come across as unsettling to those not schooled in this specific form of Christian storytelling. Those from more fundamentalist traditions will be more at home with the “ Hell House ”-style fascination with (and amplification of) the sins of the world and the eternal damnation that is the consequence. Whether innate or learned, there are narrative beats familiar from most mainstream stories that make “Redeeming Love” uncomfortably unbalanced for audiences who are from other faith traditions or secular.

Cowan and Lewis make a very appealing couple, warm and natural even with the most heavy-handed dialogue. It's impossible not to root for them, and Lewis somehow makes Michael’s near-saintly patience and gallantry seem human. But the other characters are barely sketched-in props, the storyline is wildly melodramatic, and the movie is at best casual and at worst an endorsement of lynching (guilty) people accused of crimes. The biggest problem is that the most touching moments are hammered so hard. "Redeeming Love" could have tried to reach a broader audience but settles for preaching to the choir.

Uncharted 2 must use the games to fix a major problem i had with the tom holland movie.

2022's Uncharted movie made some unusual decisions when it came to its villains, but Uncharted 2 can do a better job if Sony greenlights the sequel.

  • Uncharted 2 should use villains from the game series to avoid the mistake of introducing unnecessary characters like in the first movie.
  • The Uncharted movie sequel has a rich catalog of antagonists to choose from, each of whom can translate brilliantly to the big screen.
  • The first Uncharted movie missed the mark with the introduction of a new two-dimensional villain, making it crucial for the sequel to tap into the source material for stronger adversaries.

Uncharted 2 has the chance to make up for one of the first movie's biggest downfalls, and it can find the solution by turning to the source material in the game series. The Uncharted movie cast was a blend of actors being assigned pre-existing characters as well as those stepping into original personas. 2022's Uncharted movie made various changes to the games , with results being mixed at best. The characters developed specifically for live-action were perhaps unnecessary, as the source material has no shortage of ancillary characters and compelling antagonists.

While Uncharted 2 has yet to be confirmed , various figures attached to the first movie have commented on the script's progress. Additionally, the first film was a success at the box office, so it would make sense for Sony to put a sequel into production sooner rather than later. As such, it seems inevitable that Tom Holland will eventually return as Nathan Drake , but his next adversary needs to be better than his last.

Uncharted's Shock Ending, Secret Characters & Sequel Setup

Uncharted 2 needs to use a villain from the games, 2022's uncharted included a brand-new villain.

One of the most surprising changes the Uncharted movie made was introducing a new villain to oppose Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg's Victor "Sully" Sullivan. All the Uncharted games are practically overflowing with bad guys that would have made a great addition to the movie adaptation of the story. While 2022's Uncharted explored the confusing option of creating an original antagonist , the sequel needs to take another look at the source material rather than making up another unfamiliar individual.

While broadening the Uncharted universe with a new villain could have been an interesting decision once the movie franchise was more established, doing so in the first movie was a waste of source material. Parts of the adaptation are already unrecognizable when placed alongside the games, and adding a new bad guy to the formula only compounds the disparities. Using one of the nefarious figures from the Naughty Dog game series would correct some of the issues with the first movie, and set up a more promising future for the film franchise.

Why Antonio Banderas' Uncharted Villain Didn't Work

Santiago moncada lacked depth.

Antonio Banderas played a new villain in the Uncharted movie called Santiago Moncada. While Banderas' performance was as brilliant as always , the character was a little two-dimensional. In addition, while the movie made an effort to use the protagonists from the games, it gave them an unproven adversary to race against for the treasure. While this may not have been a huge issue for those unfamiliar with the original games, it would have been a little unusual for any pre-existing fans waiting to see a familiar bad guy rear their head.

Uncharted should at least be commended for letting Benderas play "against-type," and the actor did a very good job.

While Banderas has been more prone to playing villains in recent years , he's still heavily associated with heroic figures such as Zorro and Shrek 's Puss in Boots. As such, Uncharted should at least be commended for letting Benderas play "against-type," and the actor did a very good job. However, the scenario in which he was playing Monacada was wrong, as in any other action-adventure movie franchise, the character would have been much more effective.

The Uncharted Games' Villains Are One Of The Games' Biggest Strengths

The uncharted movie sequel has a rich catalog of antagonists to choose from.

The main Uncharted games were released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, but there were also lesser-known games within the same continuity. In the collection, every Uncharted villain would translate brilliantly to the big screen. There aren't many franchises with so many ready-made bad guys primed for use, so Uncharted is in a very fortunate position . Ignoring these potential film antagonists is nothing short of a huge waste, so Uncharted 2 needs to avoid making the same mistake twice. With both Moncada and Tati Gabrielle's Jo Braddock dead at the end of Uncharted , the slate is clean to start again.

Uncharted 2 Can Rescue $400 Million Movie Franchise With Divisive 16-Year-Old Video Game Plot Twist

Jo Braddock, another villain from the first Uncharted movie, is based on Nadine Ross from 2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End , and even shares a similar dynamic with Moncada as her game counterpart does with her underling. So, Nadine is likely to be out of contention for an appearance in Uncharted 2 due to her similarities to Braddock. Nadine is one of the best Uncharted villains, so it's a shame to see her movie equivalent disposed of so quickly. That being said, her exit from the film franchise means any number of the game villains could appear in Uncharted 2 .

2022's Uncharted movie can be streamed on Hulu. Uncharted 2 has yet to be confirmed.

Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2 is the unconfirmed sequel to the 2022 action film, Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

‘Civil War’ and Its Terrifying Premonition of American Collapse

A close-up of a broken window, with what looks like a bullet hole in it.

By Michelle Goldberg

Opinion Columnist

Going into Alex Garland’s astonishing new film, “Civil War,” I expected to be irritated by the implausibility of its premise. I’m not talking about the idea that America could devolve into vicious internecine armed conflict. That seems possible, if not probable. In one 2022 poll , 43 percent of Americans said they thought a civil war within the next decade was at least somewhat likely. I wouldn’t go that far, but I won’t be surprised if political violence spikes after the upcoming election and eventually spirals out of control. I’m pretty confident, however, that if the sort of war Garland depicts ever actually broke out in this beleaguered nation, California and Texas wouldn’t be on the same side.

“Civil War” has received plenty of adulatory reviews, but Garland has also been widely criticized for eliding the ideological forces driving America’s fracturing. He’s repeatedly spoken about the dangers of polarization, a bit of a cop-out, given that only one American political party has leaders who lionize violent insurrection. This month A24, the powerhouse indie production company behind “Civil War,” released a map of the film’s fictional divisions on social media, under the hokey caption “Pledge your allegiance.” It showed an America split among the Loyalist States, stretching from the East Coast through the center of the country; the southern Florida Alliance; the secessionist Western Forces of California and Texas; and the New People’s Army of the northwest, which sounds vaguely Maoist.

This suggested a fictional universe in which far-right militias and antifa groups pose comparable threats, an impression strengthened by some of Garland’s comments at South by Southwest, the Austin, Texas, cultural festival where “Civil War” debuted . “I have a political position, and I have good friends on the other side of that political divide,” he said . “Honestly, I’m not trying to be cute. What’s so hard about that?” The obvious answer is that friendly disagreement between left and right is possible on some issues but not others; there’s no fruitful debate to be had about, for example, whether migrants are “poisoning the blood” of our country. Garland’s No Labels-style denunciation of extremism in general — as opposed to the particular kind of extremism behind America’s most deadly recent political violence — seemed to me a little glib and cynical, as if he wanted to make a hugely provocative movie but not risk offending potential audiences. If you’re going to dramatize many of our worst fears about the trajectory of American politics, I thought you should take the substance of those politics seriously.

But now that I’ve seen “Civil War,” which is neither glib nor cynical, Garland’s decision to keep the film’s politics a little ambiguous seems like a source of its power. The emphasis here should be on “a little” because, contrary to some of what I’d read, its values aren’t inscrutable, just lightly worn. Yes, there is a reference, early on, to “Portland Maoists.” We learn that the film’s heroine, a valiant, traumatized combat photographer named Lee, is famous for shooting the “antifa massacre,” but we never find out if antifa members were the perpetrators or victims. Still, it’s not a stretch to interpret the film as a premonition of how a seething, entropic country could collapse under the weight of Donald Trump’s return.

As “Civil War” opens, America’s third-term president — a man who will later be compared to Benito Mussolini, Nicolae Ceausescu and Muammar el-Qaddafi — is practicing a blustering speech. “We are now closer than we have ever been to victory,” he says, falsely, adding, “Some are already calling it the greatest victory in the history of mankind.” Nick Offerman, who plays the president, doesn’t imitate Trump’s mannerisms, but the phrasing — the absurd, mendacious hyperbole attributed to nameless third parties — is extremely familiar. Soon after this scene, a journalist imagines asking him if, in retrospect, disbanding the F.B.I. was a mistake.

The action in “Civil War” is driven by Lee and her colleagues’ quest to make it from New York to Washington, D.C., to capture the president’s overthrow by rapidly advancing rebel forces. (The front line, in a resonant note, is in Charlottesville, Va.) In the film’s most gutting scene, a paramilitary soldier filling a mass grave asks each of the journalists where they’re from. Lee is from Colorado, and a younger reporter whom she’s reluctantly taken on as a protégée is from Missouri. To the soldier, these women, who are, like him, both white, are the right kind of American. Others in their party don’t qualify.

Given this setup, the ideological indeterminacy of the rebels helps the movie avoid seeming schematic or didactic. “Civil War” is an antiwar war movie; you’re not supposed to root for anyone except the journalists witnessing it. Part of what makes it so searing, though, is that aside from its unlikely California-Texas alliance, its story doesn’t require too much explanation to make sense. Garland has said that the dynamics depicted in “Civil War” aren’t specific to America, but had he attempted a similar movie about his native England, a lot more narrative scaffolding would have been required to show how citizens turned fratricidal, not to mention where all the heavy weapons came from. In America, you need less signposting on the route from our uneasy present to an imagined implosion. The movie’s refugee camps don’t look all that different from the tent encampments in many American cities. The paramilitary guy, in his fatigues and goofy red sunglasses, could easily be a Boogaloo Boi or an Oath Keeper. The culminating battle in the capital is a more intense version of scenes we witnessed on Jan. 6.

Early in the movie Lee says, “Every time I survived a war zone and got the photo, I thought I was sending a warning home: Don’t do this.” “Civil War” works as a similar sort of warning. It’s close enough to where America is right now that we don’t need Garland to fill in all the blanks.

Need a way to celebrate 420? Weed recommend these TV shows and movies about stoners

Puff, puff, pass the remote.

The "high" and holy holiday of 4/20 is upon us once again, with plenty of pungent programming to toke. For the uninitiated, April 20 is an unofficial holiday also known as "Weed Day," dedicated to all things marijuana . It's traced back to 1971, when a group of high schoolers from San Rafael, California, known as the Waldos, agreed to meet at 4:20 p.m. with map in hand to search for a plot of marijuana plants that had been abandoned by its owner.

The notion of 420 as a countercultural celebration became a thing in the 1990s when a group of Grateful Dead fans posted flyers in Oakland, California, urging fans to light up on April 20 at 4:20 p.m.

What is 4/20? How April 20 became a holiday for weed-lovers everywhere

Wherever you fall on the pot spectrum, we're here to suggest stoner-themed movies and TV shows for just about every altered state, all of which are available to rent, buy, watch for free or stream with a subscription.

If you need a toke of stoner wisdom: 'The Big Lebowski'

If you think there's a more quotable stoner movie than "The Big Lebowski," well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. The Coen brothers' 1998 cult classic is an offbeat crime caper about a shaggy, White Russian-swilling stoner named The Dude (Jeff Bridges), who gets pulled into a ransom scheme involving a rich philanthropist's two-timing trophy wife (Tara Reid). Featuring an all-star cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and John Goodman (Oscar-worthy as a foul-mouthed Vietnam vet), the film also has plenty of outlandish dream sequences that are best enjoyed after a few bong rips.

Where to watch:   Hulu and Peacock

If you want to have your mind completely blown: 'Annihilation'

Next to 2023's " Beau Is Afraid ," one of the trippiest movies we've ever seen bar none is "Annihilation," Alex Garland's highbrow, thought-provoking 2018 thriller that bombed at the box office but has since become a source of endless analysis by science fiction fans. Natalie Portman stars as a biologist who ventures into a mysterious, bubble-like area called "The Shimmer" to find her missing husband (Oscar Isaac). There, she and her all-female team of scientists discover mutated creatures and eye-popping landscapes as they gradually lose their minds. The final 30 minutes – in which Portman encounters her alien-like double – will make you feel high without even smoking.

Where to watch: Prime Video

If you miss getting high with your friends: 'Broad City'

Oh, Abbi and Ilana, how we miss you. Few series better capture New York in all its sweaty, smelly, scrappy glory than "Broad City." If you want to live vicariously through Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson as they smoke a bowl and go on delightfully absurd adventures, this is your show.

Where to watch: Hulu and Paramount+

If you want to see how much attitudes about marijuana have changed: 'Reefer Madness'

Picture an after-school special with 1930s production values and you've got "Reefer Madness," a black-and-white morality tale intended to scare young people away from experimenting with "the burning weed with its roots in hell" – which, if you believed the film, might lead teens to commit murder, suicide or order someone to play the piano as fast as possible. But by the 1970s, "Reefer Madness" came to be seen as a case study of everything pot opponents got wrong – and something unintentionally hilarious to watch while blazing up. It even inspired a 2005 musical parody starring Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell.

Where to watch: Tubi and MGM+

If you want a classic with your chronic: 'Up In Smoke'

Pot comedy got its start this 1978 Cheech and Chong caper, in which the comics unwittingly drive a "fiberweed" van built entirely out of hardened marijuana resin from Mexico to the USA while being tailed by an incompetent narcotics officer (Stacy Keach).

Where to watch:   Paramount+ and Pluto TV

If you're going to be at it for a while: 'That '70s Show'

Eight seasons' worth of basement antics from Eric Forman and his friends should be more than enough to outlast anyone's weed supply.

Where to watch:   Peacock

If Sean Penn will always be Spicoli to you: 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'

If you're under 30, you've probably only ever known Penn, a two-time Oscar winner, as a Serious Dramatic Actor, having played a grieving father in "Mystic River," a condemned prisoner in "Dead Man Walking" and a gay political icon in "Milk." But Penn's big break came in this 1982 high school comedy, in which he played stoner dude Jeff Spicoli, whose worldview can be summed up thusly: "Surfing's not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying, 'Hey, bud, let's party!' "

Where to watch:  AMC+ and Philo

If you like bromantic bud comedies: 'Pineapple Express'

"Up in Smoke" may have invented the stoner movie genre, but this 2008 comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco as a process server and a pot dealer having a very bad night gave rise to an entire strain of marijuana. "As we were writing it," Rogen explained to The Cannabist in 2014, "we said, 'If we're ever at a weed store or buying weed and someone offers us Pineapple Express, we'll know we've made it !"

Where to watch: Netflix

If you like to contemplate the universe while high: 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey'

At least you'll know you are high while watching Neil deGrasse Tyson ponder the mysteries of the galaxy, as opposed to the time I nearly collided with Neil deGrasse Tyson while getting on the elevator at work and wondered if the cold medicine I was on at the time was messing with my head. (Thankfully, we had photographic evidence of his visit, proving that I did not hallucinate the whole thing.)

Where to watch:   Tubi

If you want to feel alright, alright, alright: 'Dazed and Confused'

Like Penn, Matthew McConaughey has graduated to playing Oscar-caliber roles – and thinking deep thoughts in Lincoln commercials. But the difference is that McConaughey still begins his Oscar acceptance speech by saying, "All right, all right, all right!" And that unscripted line came from his very first scene in his very first movie: "Dazed and Confused," the 1993 Richard Linklater comedy in which the unknown Texan played a 20-something who had nothing better to do than hang out with high schoolers on the last day of classes.

If you still quote 'Chappelle's Show' regularly: 'Half Baked'

Catch glimpses of Dave Chappelle's future greatness (including his Lil' Jon impression) in this 1998 comedy, which he co-wrote and starred in as Thurgood Jenkins, a research laboratory janitor who sells the pot intended for use in an FDA study so he can bail his friend out of jail. Eventually, Thurgood and his pot-selling alter ego, Mr. Nice, become a little too successful, incurring the wrath of the local drug dealer.

If you've ever used the phrase 'Bye, Felicia': 'Friday'

Rapper Ice Cube and writing partner DJ Pooh set out to create a "hood classic," and they pulled it off with this semi-autobiographical 1995 comedy about two friends (Cube and Chris Tucker) trying to figure out how to repay their pot dealer $200 before 10 p.m. And one throwaway line ("Bye, Felicia") entered the popular lexicon as a way to dismiss annoying people. Not too shabby for your first major script. In 2015, Friday even returned to theaters for a special 20th anniversary engagement on – you guessed it – 4/20.

If you'd do anything to satisfy your munchies: 'Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle'

Potheads are a suggestible lot. Mention any kind of junk food to them when the munchies are kicking in and they'll set off on an epic quest to find it. Such is the case for investment banker Harold (John Cho) and his medical school applicant buddy Kumar (Kal Penn), who see an ad for White Castle while getting stoned in this 2004 film and decide nothing else will satisfy their hunger but a bag of sliders – even if they have to survive a ride of terror with Neil Patrick Harris and hang-glide to get their hands on them.

If you think it's fun to mix Mickey Mouse and marijuana: 'Fantasia'

More than 75 years after its release, this animated classic, consisting of eight segments – including one on the history of Earth and another featuring Mickey as a sorcerer's apprentice – remains Disney's trippiest film, and the best companion for cannabis.

If you like to combine your sinsemilla with superheroes: 'Chronic-Con Episode 420: A New Dope'

Comedian and @midnight panelist Doug Benson has managed to milk two documentaries out of his marijuana habit: 2008's "Super High Me," in which he took a cue from Morgan Spurlock and spent a month off of pot and the next on a lot of it, and 2015's "Chronic-Con," in which he spends an entire Comic-Con stoned. And he may be onto something: being high would at least make it easier to stomach the exorbitant wifi fees at the convention center.
