Aparoopa Movie Review: A fresh take on a classic love template with promising newcomers

Love stories often pose a unique challenge as they tend to follow a familiar pattern: boy meets girl, encounters misunderstandings or obstacles, and eventually reconciles or rarely makes sacrifices.  Breaking away from this template can be difficult. Has director Mahesh Babu presented a fresh take on romance in his latest, Aparoopa ?

Vijay (Sughosh), a carefree boy from a middle-class family, enjoys life with his friend, played by Vijay Chendur, indulging in occasional excesses like drinking. His world changes when he meets Haasini (Hrithika Srinivas), a disciplined girl whose parents are absorbed in their work. Despite their contrasting personalities, they become friends and eventually fall in love. However, a small misunderstanding drives them apart. Can they overcome their differences? And which side of the family will support their reunion? These questions form the heart of the story.

Despite technological advancements and differences in storytelling, the essence of young romance remains the same in cinema. Mahesh Babu’s storyline may seem clichéd, focusing on the classic trope of a middle-class boy falling for a rich girl, leading to challenges arising from their differing backgrounds. Although the plot follows a familiar path, the introduction of two fresh faces injects new energy into the film.

Love knows no terms or conditions, but the resolution of differences becomes crucial for these characters. In the end, the parents play a pivotal role in bringing them together, evoking empathy from the audience. The inclusion of the song “ Oh My Kareena, ” sung by Puneeth Rajkumar,  which concludes on a happy note, is a poignant moment.

Hrithika Srinivas shines as the girl-next-door, showcasing her charm, especially in dance sequences. Sughosh, portraying Vijay’s character, seems to have enjoyed showcasing different facets of an actor. The director provides every opportunity for the newcomer to shine, showcasing his skills in action, dance, dialogue delivery, and allowing him to explore his acting abilities. Both newcomers make a decent effort in their first film, and it is now intriguing to see how they will shape their careers going forward.

The supporting cast features familiar senior actors such as Ashok and Aruna Balraj,  as Sughosh’s parents, who are pleasant on screen. Avinash, as a doting and possessive father, adds depth to the story. Love stories ultimately revolve around matters of the heart, and Mahesh Babu remains true to the principles of the genre. The wholehearted efforts of the newcomers are definitely a reason to encourage the film and its stars.

Aparoopa review: Mahesh Babu is back with the basics for newcomers

Despite churning the old wine into a new bottle, director Mahesh Babu doesn't go overboard and ends the tale in just two hours.

One may lose count of films where a boy meets a girl and the story ends on a happy note but only after some fights and a song that is mandatorily shot at a hill station or abroad.

Aparoopa is no different from those movies. However, it marks the debut of Sughosh and Hrithika in Sandalwood.

Of late, the Kannada film industry is busy experimenting with new ways of entertaining the audience in terms of content and making.

Nevertheless, director Mahesh Babu falls back on the simple boy-meets-girl tale. Interestingly, he is credited with blockbuster hits like Akash (2005) and Arasu (2007) — both featuring the late Dr Puneeth Rajkumar.

Aparoopa kicks off with Vijay (Sugosh) kicking the bad guys in the introduction fight sequence. Like in all such onscreen scenarios, there is a sidekick here too, played by Vijay Chendoor (the hero’s friend).

Now, we have to wait till the heroine is introduced.

Hasini (Hrithika), the only daughter of a wealthy father, is lonely and looking for some attention as her parents are busy with their work life.

She finds solace in Vijay who has nothing to do but roam around during the day and consume alcohol at night.

However, he is gold at soul and comes from a decent family comprising the typical onscreen father, mother and sister.

How the two meet and fall in love before they break up just before the film breaks for the interval is the crux of the story.

Yes, 99.99 percent can easily guess what’s going to happen next and how it may end!

The sole point of watching Aparoopa is — the late Dr Puneeth Rajkumar who sang the number “ You are my Kareena ” along with Sangeetha Ravindranath for Prajwal Pai’s music.

It’s an emotional moment for the Power Star fans as the track is the final piece recorded by the late actor.

Nevertheless, despite churning the old wine into a new bottle, Mahesh Babu doesn’t go overboard and wraps up the tale in just two hours of screen time.

After launching several actresses like Kriti Kharbanda, Aindrita Ray and Ashika Ranganath in Sandalwood, he manages to find another talent — Hrithika who turns out to be a good dancer with pretty good acting skills.

For those missing the regular love story, Aparoopa has some twists and turns in abundance.

What doesn’t work.

Factors that work in favour also don’t work for Aparoopa , especially for serious viewers who are done with cliched onscreen romantic stories.

For instance, the girl uses a bunch of air-filled balloons as a messenger that flies exactly to the place where our hero is waiting for it. This one defies all kinds of gravity and aerodynamic laws.

The film, despite being two hours, feels lagging with the inclusion of unwanted characters.

Usually, songs from Mahesh Babu’s films remain a highlight. But minus Puneeth Rajkumar’s peppy number, there are hardly any soothing numbers that could have made it more appealing.

Apart from Mahesh Babu’s rendering of the basics with the introduction of two newcomers and the final singing performance by the Power Star, Aparoopa is a one-time watch that works in parts.

It is for lovers of old-style romance and not for serious brains seeking logical experience.

ಆ್ಯಕ್ಷನ್‌ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳೇ ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿರುವ ನವಿರಾದ ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಪ್ರೇಮಕತೆ ಇದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೇಮವಿದೆ, ಡ್ಯೂಯೆಟ್‌ ಇದೆ, ಬ್ರೇಕಪ್ ಹಾಡಿದೆ, ರುಚಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಷ್ಟು ಫೈಟಿಂಗ್ ಇದೆ, ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಹಾಡುಗಳಿವೆ, ಕುರಿ ಪ್ರತಾಪ್ ತಮಾಷೆ ಇದೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಸೇರಿ ಅಪರೂಪ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಆಗಿದೆ.

ಬ್ರೇಕಪ್‌ ಆಗಿರುವ ಲವಲವಿಕೆಯ ತರುಣನೊಬ್ಬ ತನ್ನ ನೋವಿಗೆ ಮದ್ದು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನ ಪ್ರೇಮಕತೆಯ ಅನಾವರಣ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಕಾಂಗಿತನದಿಂದ ನೋಯುತ್ತಿರುವ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಬಯಸುವ, ವಿಸ್ಮಯ ಸಂಭವಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕಾಯುವ ಹುಡುಗಿಯ ಭೇಟಿ ನಾಯಕನ ಜೊತೆ ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕವಾಗಿ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇಮದಾರಂಭ. ಕತೆಯಾರಂಭ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೂ ಉಡಾಫೆಯಿಂದ ಇದ್ದ ನಾಯಕನ ರೂಪಾಂತರ.

ಇದೊಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭಾರವಿಲ್ಲದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ. ಭಾವನೆಗಳು ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಹಗುರ ಸಿನಿಮಾ. ಹಸಿರು ದಾರಿ ಇದೆ, ಒದ್ದೆಯಾದ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಿವೆ, ಪ್ರೇಮಗೊಂದಲವಿದೆ, ಹಿಮದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನರ್ತನವಿದೆ, ಹಿತವಾದ ಹಾಡುಗಳಿವೆ, ಸೊಗಸದ ಕೌಟುಂಬಿಕ ಚಿತ್ರಣವಿದೆ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಸೇರಿ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಕಾವ್ಯಮಯವನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿದೆ. ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಹಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪುನೀತ್ ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್ ಧ್ವನಿ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಖುಷಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷಾದ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಉಂಟು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು ತುಂಬಾ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವಾದದ್ದೇನೂ ಹೇಳಲೂ ಹೋಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲೂ ಹೋಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಭಾವಗಳನ್ನು ತಾಕುವ ಕತೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯನಿಗೂ ತಲುಪುವ ಪ್ರೇಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೈಕ್ ರೈಡ್ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಿಮರಾಶಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಹುಡುಗ, ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಡಾನ್ಸ್ ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಒಲವು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಕೊಂಚ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಹಾಕಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಷ್ಟರ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇದೊಂದು ಚೆಂದವನ್ನೇ ಹಾಸುಹೊದ್ದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಫೀಲ್‌ಗುಡ್‌ ಸಿನಿಮಾ.

ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಅಚ್ಚರಿ ನಾಯಕ ಸುಘೋಷ್ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಯಕಿ ಹೃತಿಕಾ. ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಪೈಪೋಟಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ನಟಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತೆರೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುವಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನೃತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿನ ಚಾಕಚಕ್ಯತೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಂಕಗಳು ಕೊಡುವಂತಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲ್ ಪೈ ಸಂಗೀತ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಿಳಿತಗೊಂಡು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳೇ ತುಂಬಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ, ಹಸಿರು ದಾರಿಯಂತೆ ಆಹ್ಲಾದ ಒದಗಿಸುವ, ಮಳೆಯಂತೆ ಖುಷಿ ಒದಗಿಸುವ ಸರಳ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಕಾವ್ಯ.
