Assess your speaking skills with our free english speaking test.

english speech test

No matter how long you’ve been studying English, you’re probably curious to know how your English speaking abilities compare to a native speaker. Unfortunately, assessing your own English conversation skills is not so easy. This is where a free English speaking test comes in handy!

There are dozens of English assessment tests available online, though the vast majority won’t test your speaking abilities. This is why our free English speaking test can help you determine your current level of spoken English.

But how does an English speaking fluency test assess your abilities? And what are the benefits of taking the test? We will answer both of these questions and more, but first, let’s take a look at the kind of questions you can expect on the Magoosh English speaking test:

How does the Magoosh English speaking test work?

The Magoosh English speaking test is fast, yet comprehensive. In a matter of minutes, you can finish the test and analyze your current English-speaking strengths and weaknesses! The test is divided into two distinct sections: Questions and Phrases.

Section 1 – Answering Questions

In the first section, you will be presented with 6 separate audios. When you hit play, you will hear a person speaking in English.

Each of these audios covers a wide range of topics. For the majority of questions, the person will describe a situation before asking a question related to the topic. These questions vary in difficulty, but you can listen to each audio as many times as needed.

Once you’re ready to answer, you must click the “record your answer” button below the audio. Depending on the device you’re using, you might need to grant access to the microphone before you begin speaking. You will repeat the same process for all 6 questions in Section 1.

This section is designed to test your listening comprehension since this is an integral part of English speaking. Additionally, it tests your vocabulary and grammar. Once you’ve recorded your answers for all 6 questions, you can move on to Section 2.

Section 2 – Repeating Phrases

In Section 2, you will not need to answer questions directly. Instead, you will simply listen to a spoken phrase and repeat the same phrase as you heard it. While the content of this part of the test is different, the format remains the same. You will need to listen to each audio and click “record your answer” when you’re ready to speak.

This section tests your listening and pronunciation skills. Your score will depend on your ability to repeat English words and phrases accurately; the better your pronunciation, the better your score!

The Magoosh English speaking test is scored on a scale from 0 – 100. Every question is weighted equally. This means that the maximum score you can get from each question is 10.

How to read your score?

  • 80 or Above : Your English is advanced. This means you likely fall within the C1 or C2 levels (CEFR). At these levels, we can help you refine your English and sound more like a native speaker!
  • Between 50 and 80 : Your English is intermediate. This means that you likely fall within the B1 or B2 levels (CEFR). At these levels, we can accelerate your English skills so that you can handle more situations with greater confidence!
  • 50 or Less : You are a beginner. We recommend using other resources to study before you come back to us!

Why should you try our English speaking test?

You probably want to know your current English speaking level as soon as possible. At the same time, it could be scary to take a formal test. We’re here to put your mind at ease. Here are some of the best reasons to take an English speaking test with Magoosh:

  • It’s Free – That’s right! You don’t need to pay anything to take our English speaking test!
  • It’s Fast – With the Magoosh speaking test, you won’t need to dedicate hours of your valuable time to answering questions. Instead, we consolidated our test format to focus on the most important aspects of English speaking.
  • You Get Your Results Immediately – Unlike other platforms for testing English speaking skills, Magoosh provides your results within seconds of submitting your answers!
  • You Get an Objective Analysis – At Magoosh, we believe in giving honest, useful feedback to everyone. This means that your score will be an accurate reflection of your current speaking level.

So, what are you waiting for? If you want to assess your current English speaking abilities, there’s no better time than the present.

Free online IELTS Speaking practice tests

There is just one version of the IELTS Speaking test for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

As the Speaking questions and topics are the same for both tests, you can be sure that the practice material provided here is suitable for you, whichever version of the IELTS test you are taking.

What to expect

In the IELTS Speaking test, you will have a discussion with a certified examiner lasting between 11 and 14 minutes. This will be interactive and as close to a real-life discussion as possible.

The test has three parts:

  • In Part 1 - you will answer questions about yourself and your family.
  • In Part 2 - you will speak about a given topic, which will be introduced by the examiner on the day.
  • In Part 3 - you will have a longer discussion with the examiner about the topic introduced in Part 2.

How to practise

This practice material is designed for two people working together, so you’ll need to find a study partner to help you. This might be a teacher or a friend.

You should take all three parts of the test one after the other without a break to make sure that your practice session is as realistic as possible.

Remember to speak clearly and accurately. It is important to say as much as you can (without rushing) and to be spontaneous. Do not prepare answers in advance as you will not have this option when it comes to the real-life IELTS Speaking test. The more natural and authentic you can be, the better the test is likely to go.

It’s a good idea  to record yourself (e.g. via your smartphone or laptop) so that you can go back and check your performance. If you can’t record yourself, ask your study partner if they can do so.

There are two practice tests below. Each test includes questions for your study partner to ask you as well as a sample topic for you discuss.

If you need more guidance, you can also listen to real-life audio recordings of a candidate taking the test.

How to review your Speaking test

Listen to your own recordings (if possible) and review your performance with your study partner.   You may want to discuss the following:

  • Think about how you spoke. Were you fluent? Did your speech sound natural? Were you able to express yourself clearly?
  • Did anything prevent you from doing your best? Is there anything you might approach differently next time?

IELTS Speaking test samples

If you wish to hear samples of the Speaking test, you can listen to the recordings and read the audio transcripts for each part of the test. These are designed to give you an understanding of the format of the test, and they do not represent model answers so you should not try to imitate them.

The S/W exam credit is required for accessing this module and covers both Speaking and Writing exams .

You will need a computer with the internal or external microphone and the modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari or similar).

You will be able try and adjust your microphone and other software and hardware settings before you proceed to the English Speaking test.

english speech test

Speaking test-how it works

The English Speaking test  takes about  10 minutes .  You record answers to eight general conversational questions in the English language.

You do not need to prepare specifically before the test, a practice in  English conversation  is enough. Your audio recordings are saved and evaluated by our trained assessors in four aspects- vocabulary range, accuracy, fluency, and coherence of your spoken performance.

You get the result in 7 business days after the test completion. The result includes the Speaking test protocol with comments about your performance from our experienced assessors.

The Speaking test methodology:

using the CEFR Speaking grid tests from the Association of Language Testers in Europe ( ALTE )

Duration of the speaking test as a whole:  Approximately 10 minutes (this includes 4 minutes of preparation time) Target CEFR level of the speaking test:  Separate tests for A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 proficiency levels Channel for test delivery:  Audio recording Test content:  General English language proficiency test ( vocational assessment upon request)

Key test purpose:   Proficiency test and placement tests

Other possible test purposes include:

  • Achievement tests sometimes called progress tests, which measure what students have learned. ‘The content … is generally based on the course syllabus or the course textbook’.
  • Diagnostic tests ‘seek to identify those areas in which a student needs further help’.
  • Placement tests are ‘designed to assess students’ levels of language ability so that they can be placed in an appropriate group or class’.
  • Proficiency tests , which ‘are not based on a particular language programme. They are designed to test the ability of students with different language training backgrounds.’

Rating method:  A combination of a holistic and analytical approach. It has been claimed that the holistic approach more closely resembles how language production is judged in real life and can be quicker than using an analytic approach. However, analytic marking can offer richer diagnostic information for L2 learners.

The TrackTest Speaking test combines a holistic approach with the analytical for rating . For the purposes of the certificate, it uses quantitative feedback: below the level / meets the level /above the level where is the test taker’s performance judged as a whole.

In the accompanying Speaking test protocol, raters also provide the 3-grade quantitative feedback as well as qualitative feedback for the specific rating criteria: coherence, fluency, lexical and grammatical range, and lexical and grammatical accuracy. However, these are intended mainly for additional diagnostics. The total result is not calculated from these specific ratings. Performance is rated by manual marking, using 1-2 raters.

Feedback:  Both quantitative and qualitative feedback are provided for test-takers.

Quantitative feedback: below the level / meets the level /above the level Qualitative feedback: General feedback and optional specific feedback based on rating criteria.

Instructions:  Task instructions are provided written and/or via audio prompts. The prevailing discourse type required is in the form of question and answer. The expected response is a short monologue (up to 1 min.) and extended interaction.

How to speak faster.

  • Use contractions when speaking. This will help you to speak faster and make you sound more natural.

How to calculate the speech speed rate?

Rate of Speech Speed can be calculated in words per minute (wpm) just like the typing speed. The average Speaking Speed Rate is 150 wpm (2.5 words per second). Traditionally you had to calculate your speech tempo manually by recording yourself talking for a minute and then counting the number of words in your speech. After you divide the number of words by the minutes your speech took, you can get the WPM score. Nowadays you can easily test your English Speaking Speed with TypingMaster's Free Speech Test above. This web page uses an automatic voice speech recognition features of your web browser to analyze your speed. Just follow the easy on-screen instructions carefully and remember to enable both your microphone and speakers. If the speed test does not work properly please use the latest Chrome Browser on your desktop device or mobile phone.

Are you speaking quickly or slowly?

What is the average speaking speed.

  • Less than 110 wpm - slow speech rate
  • 120-160 wpm - Normal Conversational speech speed
  • 100-150 wpm - Presentation speech speed
  • Over 150 wpm - Radio Podcast speech speed
  • Over 250 wpm - Commentator speech speed

How fast should I speak?

The ideal speaking rate varies depending on the context and audience, but generally, a speaking rate of around 150-160 words per minute is considered to be a good target for most speakers. This rate is fast enough to keep the audience engaged, but not so fast that it becomes difficult for them to understand you. However, it's important to note that the rate at which you speak should be tailored to your audience and the situation. For example, if you are giving a lecture, you may want to speak slightly slower to ensure that the audience has time to take notes. On the other hand, if you're giving a presentation at a fast-paced industry event, you may want to speak slightly faster to keep the audience engaged. Speaking slowly and clearly makes your articulation more clear and your audience stays more engaged in your presentation.
