Error presenting powerpoints in Skype for Business

Jorge Raigoza (TCSP)

I have the same issue no matter which powerpoint files I present (share powerpoint files).  I have no other devices to test this on and there is no way I am going back to the previous version of Windows 10.  I want the added functionality of it (dark mode file explorer for instance).  Further I am past the 10 day period so I cannot go back any more. I did some further testing and I think I identified the source of the problem; it seems to be related to how onedrive is behaving. All my files are synced in onedrive.  When I try and present the file from the onedrive folder thats where I am having problems.  If I go instead to "This PC" and find the same file there it seems to work.  I dont know why that is the case but its a real problem because the onedrive folder should be the one to use for all the documents.

I have the answer for you. I logged this bug with Microsoft over a month ago as it affected over 500 of our devices, but Microsoft tech was useless and probably did not log it.

The issue you have is a OneDrive glitch. You have to  disable  1 option under OneDrive settings ( Office tab) called " Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open ". To save yourself other issues, disable the other option you mentioned in an earlier post, the one that downloads the files on-demand.

To prove this is the issue, place the PowerPoint in a folder under C drive that is not synced with OneDrive. You will be able to share it.

Share and present content from Skype Meetings App (Skype for Business Web App)

You can show your entire desktop or just a program to everyone in a Skype Meeting, call, or instant messaging (IM) conversation.

Keep in mind that you need to be a presenter in a Skype Meeting to share your screen. If the option is grayed out or you see a message that says "Sharing controls are disabled by policy," ask one of the presenters to give you presenter access.

Share your screen or a program

Share Screen when you need to switch between multiple programs, or work on files from different programs.

Share Programs when you need to present specific programs or files and don’t want people to see anything else on your computer.

Click the Share button at the bottom of the meeting window.

Click the Share button

Click Share Screen to share your desktop view or click Share Program to share a specific program on your computer.

Important:  When sharing your desktop, everyone in the meeting can see your programs, files, and notifications. If you have confidential information or files that you don’t want people to see, close them or use Share Program instead.

To share one or more programs or files, click Share Program , and then select a program or press Ctrl + program to choose more than one.

On the sharing toolbar, at the top of the screen, use any of these options:

Click Stop Presenting when you are done sharing your screen.

Click Give Control to share control of your desktop or program with the participants

Click the pin to hide the toolbar and have more space. To un-hide the toolbar, move your mouse to the top of the screen. When the sharing toolbar appears, use any of the controls you need or click the pin again to keep the toolbar visible.

If you want a meeting attendee to share their screen, give them presenter access, so they can use the controls.

Share your desktop or a program

Present Desktop when you need to switch between multiple programs, or work on files from different programs.

Present Programs when you need to present specific programs or files and don’t want people to see anything else on your computer.

At the bottom of the conversation window, point to the presentation (monitor) icon.

Configure integration with Office Web Apps Server in Skype for Business Server

  • 13 contributors

Summary: Read this topic to learn how to configure integration between Office Web Apps Server and Skype for Business Server to enable PowerPoint presentations for web conferencing.

Skype for Business Server employs Office Web Apps Server to handle PowerPoint presentations for web conferencing. For information about the advantages to this approach, see Plan for conferencing in Skype for Business Server .

Before you can configure Skype for Business Server to use Office Web Apps Server, you must ensure that Office Web Apps Server is already deployed and configured. For information on Office Web Apps Server, see the article Deploy the infrastructure: Office Online Server .

After Office Web Apps Server has been successfully installed and your Web farm correctly configured, you must then configure Skype for Business Server to communicate with the new server by adding the Office Web Apps Server discovery URL to your Skype for Business Server topology.

The latest iteration of Office Web Apps Server is named Office Online Server, which is supported by Skype for Business Server. For more detail, refer to the Office Online Server documentation .

Configure Skype for Business Server to communicate with Office Web Apps Server

To add Office Web Apps Server to your topology, complete the following steps:

Open Skype for Business Server Topology Builder.

In the Topology Builder dialog box, select Download Topology from existing deployment and then click OK .

In the Save Topology As dialog box, type a name for your topology document (for example, PreWebAppsServerTopology ) in the File name box and then click Save . This topology can later be retrieved and republished if you encounter problems with your new topology.

In Topology Builder, expand Skype for Business Server , expand the name of your site, expand Enterprise Edition Front End pools , right-click the name of one of your pools, and then click Edit Properties .

In the Edit Properties dialog box, on the General tab, find the heading Associate Office Web Apps Server and then click New (or select an existing Office Web Apps Server from the drop-down list).

In the Define New Office Web Apps Server dialog box, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of your Office Web Apps Server computer in the Office Web Apps Server FQDN box; when you do this, your Office Web Apps Server discovery URL should automatically be entered into the Office Web Apps Server discovery URL box.

If the Office Web Apps Server is installed on-premises and in the same network zone as Skype for Business Server then the option Office Web Apps Server is deployed in an external network (that is, perimeter/Internet) shouldn't be selected.

If the Office Web Apps Server is deployed outside your internal firewall, then select the option Office Web Apps Server is deployed in an external network (that is, perimeter/Internet) .

In the Define New Office Web Apps Server dialog box, click OK , and then click OK in the Edit Properties dialog box. The discovery URL will then be listed as one of the pool's Associations.

You'll have to repeat this process for each pool that needs to be associated with your Office Web Apps Server.

After you've added the discovery URL to the topology, you must then publish the updated topology. To do that in Topology Builder:

Click Action and then click Publish Topology .

In the Publish Topology wizard, on the Publish the Topology page, click Next .

On the Publishing wizard complete page, click Finish .

Close Topology Builder.

Configure access for external users

If you want external users (that is, users logging on from outside your organization's firewall) to have access to Office Web Apps Server PowerPoint presentations, then you'll need to use Office Web Apps Server and a reverse proxy server. You'll also need to create and configure a website publishing rule, which will help ensure that users are able to connect to the server.

Validate the configuration

After Office Web Apps Server has been added to the topology, and after that topology has been published, you should see two new event log events in the Skype for Business Server event log. First, an LS Data MCU event (event ID 41034) should be added; this event will report that the Office Web Apps Server has been discovered:

Web Conferencing Server Office Web Apps Server is discovered, PowerPoint content is enabled.

In addition to that you should see another LS Data MCU event (event ID 41032) that reports back Office Web Apps Server URLs. For example, you should see something similar to this:

Web Conferencing Server Office Web Apps Server discovery has succeeded.

Office Web Apps Server internal presenter page: https://atl-officewebapps-001.litwareinc.com/m/Presenter.aspx?a=0 &embed=

Office Web Apps Server internal attendee page: https://atl-officewebapps-001.litwareinc.com/m/ParticipantFrame.aspx?a=0&embed=true&=

If you have configured access for external users, you'll also see something similar to:

Office Web Apps Server external presenter page: https://atl-officewebapps-001.litwareinc.com/m/Presenter.aspx?a=0 &embed

Office Web Apps Server internal attendee page: https://atl-officewebapps-001.litwareinc.com/m/ParticipantFrame.aspx?a=0&embed=true&amp ;

If you see an LS Data MCU event with the event ID of 41033 that means that Office Web Apps Server discovery has failed. In that case, Skype for Business Server will try as many times as needed to discover the newly-configured Office Web Apps Server. If the discovery process fails repeatedly you should remove Office Web Apps Server from your topology document, publish the updated topology, and then try adding Office Web Apps Server back to the topology after the connectivity issues have been resolved.

If Office Web Apps Server appears to be configured correctly and has been recognized by the discovery process you can verify that Office Web Apps Server is working as expected by sharing a PowerPoint presentation between a pair of Skype for Business clients. If User A can load and display the PowerPoint presentation and if User B can then join the meeting and see that presentation then Office Web Apps Server is working.

Even if Office Web Apps Server appears to be configured correctly, you could potentially receive the error message "Some sharing features are unavailable due to server connectivity issues" when you try sharing a PowerPoint presentation. If you receive that error message you should restart the Front End server (or servers) associated with the new Office Web Apps Server.

PowerPoint Presentation with Skype for Business in Office 365 Workflow

Workflow process with skype for business client.

skype for business powerpoint presentation not working

Hi, we just established Skype for business with polycom video confrconfe. We test with 3 clients. One of the client share his display, it is working. Then he present PPT at the time video conference display shows "unsupported file content". Other connected user also not see the PPT presentation. What is the issue??

Hi, there might be two different issues. If you use RealConnect or any Group system, the PPTX cannot be displayed because it is rendered on the Office Web App Server and send by DHTML. So this means, it is not a video stream like Desktop Sharing. This might cause the issue. Simply try sharing the screen or the PowerPoint App directly. Hope this helps.

For anyone else experiencing the same symptoms. Check your PowerPoint file isn’t in a OneDrive folder. (including Desktop if thats on OneDrive) As of writing this comment, sharing from OneDrive is not supported.

See the following article from MS https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/preload-attachments-for-a-skype-for-business-meeting-fd3d9f9d-b448-4754-b813-02e49393f251

—- Note: At this time, you cannot present a PowerPoint file from the cloud. You can open the file and then share your screen.

You might be on to something here. Just re-tested on one of my failing clients and its working when I use a file not syncing to OneDrive. Is that article the correct link? I’m not seeing any specific info about this issue (but it is 6AM, so who knows!).

Link is good. I quoted the exact line of text. It’s between steps 3 and 4 😀

I did see that, but that’s referring to documents attached to meeting invite which is only supported in SfB Online. In any case you are 100% correct about it being an issue with documents synced to OneDrive. Couldn’t find any more detail from MS on this.

Andrew, we have seen this and believe it is due to the Collaborative authoring of OneDrive locking the file. If you move Powerpoint outside of OneDrive and upload or you switch off File Collaboration in OneDrive then I suspect you will find this problem goes away. We were aware Microsoft were working on a fix for this and have confirmed that the new client does fix this issue.

Thanks Simon, James and yourself look to be on to something here. Appreciate the feedback Both!
