With the ability to communicate instantly through various forms of media, such as audio, video, and text, the mobile phone has become an essential tool for people of all ages. From its early days as a device for making and receiving calls, to its current state as a multifaceted device with a wide range of capabilities, such as web browsing, gaming, photography, and navigation, the mobile phone has continually evolved to meet the needs of its users. The development of mobile telephony can be traced back to early radio engineering and has progressed through several "generations" with the introduction of 0G systems like Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service, to the current 5G networks.

One of the most significant advancements in mobile technology has been the introduction of smartphones. These devices have enabled us to access the internet, use various apps, and perform a wide range of tasks from one compact device. This has changed the way we consume and share information, making it easier than ever to stay informed and connected. From social media to online shopping, banking, and entertainment, the mobile phone has opened up a world of possibilities.

The widespread use of mobile phones has also had a positive impact on industries such as education, healthcare, and transportation. With the help of mobile technology, students can access online resources and virtual classrooms, while doctors can remotely diagnose and monitor patients. Mobile phone applications have also made transportation more convenient and efficient, with the ability to book and track rides, view real-time traffic, and access public transportation schedules.

500 Word Essay On Mobile Phone

History and development.

The development of mobile telephony can be traced back to early radio engineering, with the Finnish inventor Areic Tigerstedt filing a patent application in 1917 for "the pocket-size folding telephone with an extremely thin carbon microphone." The first predecessors of cellular phones were analogue radio broadcasts from trains and ships. Following the Second World War, competition between several countries to create portable telephone equipment began.

Beginning with early zeroth-generation (0G) systems like Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service and its replacement, the Improved Mobile Telephone Service, the advancements in mobile telephony may be followed in consecutive "generations." These 0G systems were extremely costly, non-cellular, and unable to handle several simultaneous calls.

The introduction of smartphones in the early 2000s marked a significant advancement in mobile technology. These devices have enabled us to access the internet, use various apps, and perform a wide range of tasks from one compact device. The development of mobile networks from 2G to 5G has also greatly improved the speed and reliability of mobile communications.

Impact On Daily Life

The convenience of being able to make and receive calls and messages from anywhere at any time has made our lives more efficient and productive. One of the most significant advancements in mobile technology has been the introduction of smartphones. These devices have changed the way we consume and share information, making it easier than ever to stay informed and connected. From social media to online shopping, banking, and entertainment, the mobile phone has opened up a world of possibilities.

A Necessary Evil

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives, and while they offer many benefits, they also have some negative effects. Many people consider mobile phones to be a "necessary evil" because they are vital for communication and productivity, but they can also have negative consequences on our social interactions, mental and physical health, and overall well-being.

One of the main reasons why mobile phones are considered a necessary evil is because they have become essential for communication in today's fast-paced society. They allow us to stay connected with loved ones, colleagues, and the world around us, which is critical for personal and professional relationships. However, this constant connectivity can also lead to a lack of face-to-face communication, which can negatively impact our social interactions and relationships.

Additionally, mobile phones can also have negative effects on our mental and physical health. The constant use of mobile phones can lead to eye strain, headaches, and poor posture, and the blue light emitted by screens can disrupt sleep patterns. Furthermore, the constant distractions and notifications from mobile phones can lead to a decreased ability to focus and increased stress levels.

Moreover, mobile phones have been blamed for the reduction in privacy and security, with many people concerned about the amount of personal data that is collected and stored by mobile phone companies, apps and other third-parties.

In conclusion, the mobile phone has come a long way from its early days as a tool for making and receiving calls. It has transformed into a powerful device that has made our lives more convenient, efficient, and connected. The mobile phone continues to evolve and improve, making it an essential part of our modern world. The history, development, and impact of mobile phones on our daily lives are significant, and it is clear that it has been and will continue to be a vital technology in our society.

Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

These days one of the major concerns is losing one’s privacy through mobile usage. Now anyone could easily access all the important information related to you with just one tap. An essay is a piece of writing that expresses the author's point of view; yet, the definition is ambiguous, merging with those of a letter, a paper, an article, a pamphlet, and a short fiction. The formal essay has a serious objective, dignity, logical organization, and length, whereas the informal essay has a personal element, humor, graceful language, rambling structure, unconventionality or freshness of theme," and so on.

Literary critique, political manifestos, academic arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author are all popular uses for essays. Although almost all modern essays are written in prose, compositions in verse have often been labeled as essays. While an essay is typically defined by its brevity, works such as John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population are exceptions. As the most advanced and modern living beings on the earth, human beings need equipment and devices to communicate with each other and with the world. Mobile phones are the most sophisticated communicating devices which enable people to not just talk with others, but also to play games, watch movies, listen to songs, and enjoy different modes of entertainment.

Mobile phones were established in 1973 as portable handsets. But from there it has evolved into walkie-talkies, small mobile phones, and later on the androids and iPhones. The greater the change in appearance, the better the quality of the phone. Today mobile phones are the definition of development. Without it, the internet cannot be used and one will remain completely disconnected from the world.

If there is anything that can define the 21st century is the gadgets that human beings use for their daily purposes. Several instruments are necessary for our daily needs and we simply cannot think of our lives without them. A mobile phone is one of those gadgets which occupies a very important position in our lives.

It was invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973 as a portable handset like the handset of the landline telephone connections. Its only purpose at that time was to make and receive phone calls. The portable form made it altogether more attractive. For a more extended period, such phones or walkie-talkies were in vogue.

However, with a change in time, mobile phones also have undergone evolution at different levels. In the beginning, the handsets were reduced in size, and a screen was added to see the time, place, and the name of the person calling.

It was equipped with other minimal settings and language changes and also provided with a small fun game. With the invention of smartphones as android systems and later through iPhones, today the concept of mobile phones is greatly altered. It includes a camera, internet, banking facilities, and several applications for shopping and selling. The Internet now defines the use of mobile phones. So without this device, one can hardly even exist in the modern world.

The mobile phone is one of the most important devices of all. It is the premium model of communication and environment in the present-day world. Since its invention, it has now undergone several evolution and changes. As a result, it has tied up with the developing century and accustomed itself to its needs. Today we can hardly think of living without a mobile phone for even some hours. It is the most indispensable need of mankind and a marker of its development.

Mobile phones were invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973, as portable headsets so that they can be used as a walkie-talkie. It is the first step towards the development of mankind in a more sophisticated method. It enabled humans to use it without the connecting wire of the landline telephone connections. However, those sorts of telephones were only used for calling and receiving phone calls. It had no screen and only buttons for calls.

Later on, with gradual research and developments, phones were modified into the first modern-day mobile phones, famously popularized by Nokia. It was the first handset with a screen that was much more than just simply calling the other person. It included a small screen for the first time that showed the time and simple details of the mobile phone. It contained several minimal settings and also some simple games for fun purposes.

The mobiles had ringtones and colour changes for personalized versions of their own. Thus with this more research took place and the present android system was created for the first time. Companies like Samsung, Nokia, Lenovo, and others started producing androids. It has much more developed functions with the application of the internet.

Thus more sophisticated games and software can now be accommodated into this new system. Systems like video calls and other messaging facilities, and social media applications like Whatsapp, Facebook, messenger, and others are introduced into android phones. Presently, iPhones are the most expensive and sophisticated ones.

With growing times mobile phones have also developed. However, that has created ample problems too. Many people including children are getting addicted to their phones. Harmful games and gambling are destroying the youth. Several health issues are happening due to the prolonged use of mobile phones. Also, phones are becoming quite expensive to afford by the common people with low capital. Thus with these difficulties in mind, one has to be quite careful in handling this modern electronic device.

I have tried to adopt a very simplistic approach to writing these essays for a better understanding of all kinds of students. Mobile Phones and Children

by Rony (Egypt )

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Last years have witnessed an increase in the number of threats and problems that unusually endangered children. In spite of being convinced that mobile phone might serve securing the child, I don't think it is an absolute importance. To start with the troublesome situations that might face the child to see how mobile phone could help him. First of all, threats that might endanger the child; kidnapping trials: the child could talk to his parents, or call for the police using his own portable phone, or falling in an emergency situation, like diabetic coma or asthmatic attacks Or getting wounded in the street he could also call his parents or ambulance. Second, complexities, that might be encountered these days, are for instance; getting lost while going school or home alone in this case making a call to his parents seeking help is very beneficial. Some new mobiles has many beneficial applications like maps, how to make fast foods in the absence of working parents, these apps would give a hand to children. To sum up, while complicated and threatening situations facing the child these days are rising, and mobile phones helpful applications and uses are increasing, I don't think that it is a must to give every child a mobile phone. As, this also, has its drawbacks on children, and not every family is leaving her child to face these problems alone. *** Is this a good essay? You can comment below on this Mobile Phone Essay.

can someone please proof read my answer to: The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? The ever changing society we live in these days is unfortunately acclaimed with increasing rates of crime making it a very unsafe place to live in for everyone. children safety is compromised where disturbing offences such as abduction and any kinds of abuse are more prevalent thee days. Due to this reason, the use of mobile phones particularly by children, have been considered as a must to address this issue. Parents or guardians nowadays have supplied their own children with mobile phones as a means of a safety reassuring device. Both parties benefit more from the technical use of a mobile phone especially in conditions we live, where dangers can arise at any point in time. Should safety be compromised from children, they can easily contact their parents or other members within the family, and other appropriate persons, such as the police, who is also concerned of their well being. This easy communication access, allows for relatives or the receiver on the line to act for safety in a timely manner. Furthermore, parents have the ease of mind to their children's whereabouts. The high technology of mobile phones allow them to easily contact or be informed with updates about their children's day. On the other hand, I believe such device is not a necessity for children in surviving this world evolved with crimes and complexities. Firstly, education can be provided to the young ones in regards to safety practices. This refers to knowing who can be trusted and not associating to strangers, never be physically in isolation and must be in large groups, and last but not least, informing them of where and who to go for safety, such as teachers, councillors or the police. These are very simple and cost effective, yet very effective ways in minimising and preventing dangers that can happen to children. Secondly, it is understandably important for parents to be aware of their children's day, however, constant communication which is considered as vital, can also interfere with these children's development of independence. Lastly, the use of mobile phones open endless opportunities of social and online gaming use, which can impact their interpersonal skills with other people and predispose them to violence. Evidently children are potentially imposed to dangers with their use of mobile phones. To conclude, although the device provide security for children while living in a troublesome and complicated world, I strongly believe it is unnecessary and inappropriate for children to own a mobile phone. Education and proper guidance should be provided for these children in order to live safely in this kind of environment we live in. GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU GUYS COMMENT ON IT ... :)

Cell Phones in the Classroom

by Deepak (Kathmandu)

It is argued that mobile phones and other electronic devices have no place in the classroom. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view? In the last decade, cell phones have become very famous and easily available throughout the world. Most of the students from across the globe have access to smartphones and they have been using these gadgets not only for study purposes but also for personal uses. However, I believe, the mobile phones should not be used inside the classroom because it distracts the pupils and also affect the effective interaction. One of the main reasons for not allowing mobile phones during the studying in classes is it hampers the student’s concentration. As a result, the student doesn’t understand the subject matter and gets poor grades in his mark sheet. For example, during my final year of undergraduate studies, there was a good student named Hari who failed in his favourite subject because of mobile chatting during the lecture times. So, to make a student distract less from mobile phones, these kinds of electronic devices should be kept out of the classroom. Another reason is a disturbance in proper discussion between teacher and students. Although the student can browse various sites using mobile data or Wi-Fi to get the information about subject matters in the classroom but he might lack to the point knowledge from his experienced teachers. In addition, he might waste too much time visiting the non-authentic sites. For instance, there are many personal blogs and websites where the student cannot get the relevant understanding of the subject matters. All in all, despite having a few advantages of using the mobile devices inside the classrooms, the students must not be allowed to use their cell phones to have the long-term good results for their studies and careers. Furthermore, this maintains good learning and teaching environment for both the students and teachers. *** Please help this students in their with their writing by feeding back on this IELTS Essay about Cell Phones in the Classroom.

Necessity of Mobile Phones Essay

by syed (Malaysia)

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? I agree that cellphones rather than an expensive commodity, is a must have for today's children as its function is not only for communication, but it also allows access to the worldwide web. Education has become more centralised and available for everyone online. In order to access information easily and rapidly, owning a cellphone is necessary. In the advent of technology, internet access is critical for knowledge, especially in the midst of current covid pandemic where tutorials are made online. Children no longer go to school, rather teachers expect every student to have at least a cellphone in order to access online classes. Increasing crime rate in the society and bullying in school have made children vulnerable to these perpetrators. Parents are not always there to supervise their kids, hence, cellphones allows children to contact family members when in danger without delay. Without cellphones, help might not be able to be attained immediately. However, unregulated access to the internet with the lack of supervision can lead to children browsing inappropriate content. Many studies have found that increase in time spent on screen has many negative impacts.Children lack fundamental communication skills. Dyslexia is also another common theme.Usage of mobile phone in the dark can lead to sleep disturbances, which can hamper children's concentrating ability in school. Owning a cellphone has become a necessity in the 21st century as it has many benefits. However, lack pf supervision can have a detrimental effect towards these children.

IELTS Essay - Necessity of Mobile Phones for Children

by Lalarukh

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? These days, there is an ongoing debate between people about how mobile phone have become a need for children due to the intense situation of the new era. While some people still argue that mobile phone have become an absolute need of a child, in my view, the disadvantages of mobile phone outweigh the advantages. In this essay i will explain my point of view by analysing both sides. These are several reason that i believe have cause more harm to children of keeping mobile phone then giving them benefit. Firstly, children spend much more time on cellphones rather than participating in other activities. It takes away precious time of sports and other recreational activities. Also, it affects the eye sight of the children. Many studies have shown that children who spend much more time on mobile phone have weak eye sight and thus end up wearing sight glasses at a very young age. Moreover, the more children spend time on mobile phone, the less exposure they have of the outer world. This reduces self confidence in children while dealing with people and socialising on a larger extent. From my personal experience, i would quote about my niece, who at a very young age have been given mobile phone. She spends majority of her time on games due to which she interacts less with the people around. Lastly, the use of mobile phone have damaged the mind of many children. The unnecessary or wrong use have made children exposed to certain objectionable things at a very young age. For example, there exist many application that are not for children under 18 years, but with mobile phone, children do have easy access to it. Now those who argue that due to the danger in the modern world have resulted the use of mobile phones claims that for the purpose of security it have become basic necessity. With fast moving education system, children have academies, schools and universities to go so with the help of mobile phone there remains a constant communication between the parent and a child. While, there is strong opinion on both sides of the case in my opinion, children still must be given mobile phone until a certain age. I would recommend that for the purpose of security due to the danger presiding in the outside world, the use of mobile phone can be allowed only in the hours of school, college etc or during travelling. Also, a strict check must be kept by the parents on usage of mobile phone .

Restricted Use of Mobile Phones Essay

by Aditya (Uttar Pradesh)

Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones. Is this a positive or negative development? Students of most schools carry cell phones with them. While these devices play a vital role in safety, connectedness and convenience, a number of schools have prohibited their use on campus. In my opinion, this is a positive decision and can benefit students not academically but also physically and socially as well. Restricting phone use in the classroom itself can improve learning. Uninterrupted studies can result in exceptional results as the primary focus remains on the subject. A continuously ringing or beeping device, for instance, can distract both teacher and student as well as other learners too and also amplifies the urge of the individual to check their phone every now and then for texts, calls and other notifications. Even the most observant teacher cannot ignore them from sneakily checking their messages or scrolling through irrelevant content mid-class. This eventually leads to imperfect knowledge which can adversely affect an individual's academic progress since half knowledge possess no value. Banning cell phones can prevent happening of these events and can bolster the academic performance of learners. In addition to banning phones in the classroom, constraining them outside the classroom as well can result in students wellbeing. Indeed, if cellular phone are banned at recess, children will be left with no other option than to interact with other students and indulge in numerous physical activities. Kids can play games, sports, or just sit and chat with their friends which is far better than sitting alone hunched over a screen. Without limitation enforced by schools, children simply cannot draw the line on their phone use. These social and physical gains are only possible with stern phone rules. In conclusion, despite cell-phones are a fundamental part of our modern lives, I strongly deem that their use in schools should be controlled. With firm boundaries and bans in some conditions, students are able to learn better, build up friendships and engage in healthier pursuits.

However, technological developments in the field of communication have made the mobile phones smart enough to be able to make video calls, surf the internet, play games, take high resolution pictures and even control other relevant gadgets. Because of this mobile phones today are also called “Smart Phones”.

World’s first ever mobile phone was demonstrated way back in 1973, by the Motorola’s then President and COO, John Francis Mitchell and an American Engineer, Martin Cooper. That mobile phone weighed around 2 kilograms.

Since then mobile phones have evolved in technology and shapes. They have become smaller, slimmer and more useful. Today mobile phones are available in various shapes and sizes, having different technical specifications and are used for a number of purposes like – voice communication, video chatting, text messaging, multimedia messaging, internet browsing, e mail, video games and photography. They also have short range wireless communication like Bluetooth and infrared. Phones having wide range of advance functions and large computing abilities are called smart phones. They have an edge over other conventional mobile phones, which are used only for voice communication.

Essay on Mobile Phone Uses and Abuses – 300 Words

There is no denying the fact that mobile phones are useful gadgets. They help us in our everyday life in a number of ways, making it easy and convenient. But, mobile phones are a blessing till they are used only for useful purposes. Using them beyond a certain limit even when there is no need at all, is not an use, but and abuse.

Uses of Mobile Phone

Mobile Phones can be used for a number of purposes like – voice communication, sending e mails, sending text messages, browsing internet, taking pictures. Smart phone today have better computing abilities and have many advance functions like – real time video chatting, interactive voice response, document manager, social media, high resolution camera, music player, location finder etc.

Communicating with our loved ones, friends or colleagues has become a matter of seconds due to the mobile phones. You just have to dial the other person’s number from your phone and wait till he/she responds to it. Mobile phones today have become so useful that, they have actually replaced the use of laptops and other bigger gadgets. Today, people send e mails, browsing the internet, manage social media accounts, power point presentations, perform calculations, and much more by using their smart phones.

Abuses of Mobile Phone

Excessive and unnecessary use of a mobile phone leads to its abuse. Even, talking for long durations on mobile phones over trivial and insignificant issues is also a type of abuse. Doctors have repeatedly warned that continuous and excessive use of mobile phones is harmful to health. Another abuse of mobile phones includes listening to loud music. Mobile phones are handy and are easy to carry in pockets. Some youngsters today have taken this entertaining capability of mobile phones to a new level of abusing it. They drive or walk on busy roads, listening to loud music, with ear plugs; unable to listen an approaching vehicle and respond on time, resulting in accidents.

It is established beyond doubt that mobile phones are useful and necessary gadgets for our everyday life. Without mobile phones, life would be harder, both personally as well as professionally. But, despite the uses that mobile phones serve in our everyday life, we must also be aware of its abuses. Mobile phones could have health and safety consequences when not used appropriately.

Essay on Mobile Phone Boon or Bane – 400 Words

Mobile phones are a boon as they are used for a number of useful purposes. Nevertheless, there is also no denying the fact that a gadget as useful as a mobile phone could sometime be annoying and irritating.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

A major concern these days is losing one’s privacy while using mobile phones. Anyone can now easily access all the important information concerning you with just a tap. Not only your information but also family, friends, personal life, career, etc.

Costly and time-consuming:

Using mobile phones is increasing day by day, so is the waste of time and money. It is also becoming more common for people to be addicted to their phones, whether they’re surfing the internet, playing games, or checking social media. In addition, people spend more money on a phone that is smarter than something useful.

Schools don't want kids on cellphones. Is banning them the solution?

Tweens, teens and their parents have mixed reviews of the new restrictions amid concerns about the effects on safety. advocates cite benefits on young people’s academic achievement and mental health..

In Flint, Michigan, students will return to class after winter break with a new rule in place : Their cellphones (and hoodies) will be banned from school, largely in the name of safety.

“When we think about our scores, when we think about all of the things that are surrounding the hurt and the pain that our scholars are feeling, cellphones are a big deal,” Superintendent Kevelin Jones II said ahead of the Flint school board’s vote Dec. 13 . “It’s a big part of the bullying. It's a big part of the reason why our scholars are not on task in class.”

The move is part of a growing – and familiar – trend. Such bans, which have been around with fluctuating popularity since the devices first cropped up, are back in the United States and around the world. Guidance recommending a ban took effect in England in October after the establishment of similar policies in recent years in Finland and France . A rule in the Netherlands is set to take effect this month .

In many cases, the rules are stricter than ever, prohibiting the devices at all times and in all locations throughout the school day and accompanied by severe consequences for rulebreakers. In Florida, for example, after the adoption this past summer of a statewide ban on cellphones during instructional time, at least one district took the rule further : In Orange County in the center of the state, use of cellphones is prohibited during lunch and in between class periods .

Tweens and teens have mixed reviews of the new restrictions, as do their parents. Proponents cite the benefits of phone-free schools for young people’s academic achievement and social-emotional well-being . At time when hundreds of districts have sued or considered suing social media companies over accusations that the platforms damage kids’ mental health, some students acknowledge the positive effect the rules have had on school climate: Kids are talking face to face again. They’re playing on the playground instead of on their screens.

But it’s hard to design and enforce an effective policy when kids are so glued to their devices and learning is so dependent on technology – when parents are so concerned, rightfully so, about school safety . Are strict bans the best way to curb the potential damage caused by cellphones?

2023 saw the return of school cellphone bans

Rules about cellphones range from students having unrestricted access to their devices all day long to locking them in specialty pouches upon entering the school and unlocking them on the way out.

Bans on devices are hardly a new phenomenon: New York City public schools banned communication devices – then namely beepers – in 1988 . Enforcement was, as it often is now, a patchwork, however. Then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg responded by sending metal detectors to schools at random starting in 2006. Former Mayor Bill DeBlasio ended the ban in 2015.

In fact, according to federal data , about 90% of school districts banned cellphones in the 2009-10 school year, and that fell to 65% by 2015. It ticked up to about 78% during the first school year disrupted by the pandemic, with the return to in-person classes, complete with adolescents glued to their screens, leading to a wave of new restrictions.

Back in Michigan, Flint schools used to prohibit the devices but then opened up to them as technology and learning circumstances changed, officials noted at the December meeting. Many schools nationally had moved away from bans to avoid penalizing kids who rely on them for their school work. Then came the chronic distractions and fighting, threats and filming of violence.

Now, personal electronic devices will be prohibited on school property and school buses during the school day. Some worried the policy was Draconian and patronizing. Yet the harm that comes from rampant cellphone use, the Flint school board concluded, outweighs the harm of banning them from campus. The district did not respond to requests for comment during the holiday break.

Teens, advocates: Bans are impractical, unfair

Schools in the nation’s capital lack a universal rule on access to cellphones, according to the school district. That leads to inconsistent policies and punishment as far as who is disciplined and when, said Shahad Mohieldin, a program coordinator for the Young Women’s Project, which helps develop leadership skills in teens at 22 schools in Washington.

Schools may intend to target apps or curb recording of video at school, but for the teens Mohieldin works with, the phone is a necessity to communicate with a parent who needs them to pick up a younger sibling from school or has another pressing concern. “They’re not calling the main office,” she said.

“Phones are a part of everyday life,” said Mohieldin, who started a Change.org petition challenging a ban at several D.C. schools. “I understand they can be distracting,” but students use their phones as calculators, to play music to stay focused or even connect with a therapist during the school day.

Cellphones at school: Should you let your kids have one? Are they even allowed?

And the most restrictive policies, Mohieldin said she has observed, have been installed at schools where a large majority of students are Black or brown or from low-income families. One school has reversed its policy since her April petition.

The imbalances in discipline are a major driving force behind the nearly 1,000 petitions on Change.org by students and parents in protest of cellphone bans at their schools . The aggrieved teens also cite everything from studies showing music improves focus to possible family emergencies and school shootings.

Sophomore Brennan Stephens is among those who wants cellphones back on his campus. Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, restricts cellphone use from 7:43 a.m. to 3:06 p.m., he said in an email. “If we are caught using them, it’s a major infraction.” That means in-school suspension or spending a day suspended from school altogether.

Stephens, 15, is adamant that access to his phone is a necessity for him and his classmates. “We need it because what if something happened at school? And what if we needed to be in direct contact with someone in case of medical emergencies?” He described a classmate whose mother has epilepsy and needs constant contact in case she experiences a seizure. What, Stephens wondered, is that kid supposed to do if that happens and they can’t be reached?

Active shooter situations are another concern that has come up frequently in debates over cellphone bans, though some experts say students aren't necessarily any safer with their devices on them.

More school districts consider suing social media companies

Proponents of bans say the inconvenient truth is that today’s teens may be ill-equipped to manage cellphone use on their own. A growing body of research frames young people’s usage of cellphones, and specifically social media, as addictive and psychologically deleterious, correlating with rising rates of depression and anxiety. Last year, the U.S. surgeon general issued an advisory warning of the effects of social media on mental health in young people.

Lawyer William Shinoff has lined up hundreds of school districts – about 820 and counting from school systems in 32 states – that are interested in suing social media companies over their effects on students. The companies have often cited federal law stating they are not responsible for the content on their platforms , but Shinoff highlighted a separate lawsuit brought by more than 40 states against Meta , the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, accusing the company of purposefully engineering its platforms to be addictive. The school district suits seek greater parental controls and better response when content about a student that can cause harm is posted.

Shinoff also hopes the litigation forces social media companies to change. “What you’ll hear from these companies is: ‘Blame the parents. Take their cellphones away, or iPads,’” he said. “Everyone’s realistic: Social media’s going nowhere. We want to make sure it’s safe for the children.”

But change through litigation takes time. For many districts, banning cellphones is more immediate means of restricting social media usage in the interest of students’ mental health.

Do cellphones interfere with learning?

Also fueling the 2023 trend toward cellphone restrictions is evidence of its harmful effects on academics. The latest results of an international standardized assessment point to significant rates of students worldwide being distracted by their own or their peers’ devices, and find that students are less likely to report distractions when there are bans.

Even turned off but in a student’s pocket or backpack, cellphones can be detrimental, said Kathleen McNutt, the head of Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia, where student access to their devices is restricted. “They feel that beep and their attention span is shot,” McNutt said. She has counseled the staff to put their phones away, too.

“Let’s not be walking through the hallways and texting. We are not Jesus for one another if we’re looking at our phone.”

One recent Common Sense Media analysis of a small group of adolescents found they received nearly 240 cellphone notifications over the course of the day, a fourth of them during school.

And those distractions take up so much of students’ time and mental energy that they often stall learning. A body of research backs this up. A 2016 study of schools in England, for example, showed banning cellphones can have academic benefits, particularly for students who struggle in school. The body of research has grown since then, with much of the literature suggesting such policies correlate with improved student achievement.

“There’s almost a consensus that mobile phones are hurtful” to children’s learning, said Louis-Philippe Beland, an economics professor at Canada’s Carleton University who co-wrote the study.

Pandemic learning: Showing up to school was hard amid COVID. Why aren’t kids (or teachers) returning to class?

High-achieving students tend to do well in school no matter what, Beland said. But lower-achieving ones are more likely to get distracted, which makes them more susceptible to the detrimental effects of cellphones in the classroom.

A host of other studies, including from Belgium, Spain and elsewhere in the United Kingdom, also show that banning mobile phones from schools improves academic performance, especially for low-performing students.

Against that backdrop, a United Nations report from last July concluded by recommending a global ban on cellphones in schools. Around the world, almost 1 in 4 countries have introduced such bans in laws or policies. Specifically, 13% of countries have laws and 14% have policies that ban mobile phones.

How to discipline kids over cellphone use

Yet the international data came with caveats. Across countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 30% of students in schools with cellphone bans report using their phones several times a day. The lack of consistent enforcement may then fuel unhealthy phone habits outside the school day. “Students in schools with cell phone bans might not have adequate opportunities to develop self-directed strategies for using cell phones,” an OECD report notes.

Todd Chandler has noticed improvements in his students’ mental health and social interactions since implementing a strict cellphone ban this school year at Luxemburg-Casco Middle School near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Students have to keep their devices in their lockers from first to last bell.

Today’s middle schoolers, he noted, were born sometime between 2009 and 2011, around the same time smartphones were cropping up and exploding in popularity. “The students we serve right now have spent their entire lives with the ability to have that kind of personal technology,” Chandler said.

The school has experimented with different cellphone policies over the years, including a red zone, green zone model in which kids can use their devices in certain campus locations. The bathrooms and locker rooms were obvious red zones, and teachers could also designate their classrooms as such if they chose.

But the lack of consistency made it difficult to enforce and apply in an effective way, Chandler said, and the increase in cellphone problems in recent years made it clear for the school community that a stricter rule was needed. The strict rules, however, are matched with education and reasonable expectations, he said.

Luxemburg-Casco takes a five-step approach to disciplining kids over cellphone infractions, for example, starting with a visit to the school office, followed by a chat with the family and ending, after repeated offenses, with regular check-ins with the office. Students get lessons in P.E. class on the mental health and academic consequences of being glued to screens and social media. That includes watching “ Screenagers ,” the documentary that helped convince him of the need for a more restrictive policy and that spearheads the “Away for the Day” campaign.

‘People are talking a lot more’

The early results have been promising, he said. Not only do students seem more engaged and connected with one another, they also seem to have acclimated to the rule. On Day 1, the school had to confiscate 10 or so devices, according to Chandler; by Day 2, it had gone down to six devices. And ever since, the daily numbers have been nominal if not zero.

“It seems as though the kids are feeling some of the positive effects of it,” he said. “And they seem to be communicating with each other more directly in places like the cafeteria during lunchtime.”

Parents have also embraced the change: About 80% have supported it in surveys. One of families’ most common concerns was safety – what happens in, for example, an active shooter situation?

This was one of Chandler’s biggest question marks, too. But after consulting with local law enforcement, the school concluded allowing students to have cellphones on them wouldn’t necessarily make them safer. Too many cellphone calls can clog up lines in an emergency situation; kids can become distracted and less alert. Classrooms also come equipped with their own phones, and teachers are allowed to keep their devices with them as well.

“It’s a big change for people,” said Owen Mears, 14, an eighth grader. He said it hasn’t affected him much, but “some people struggle with it.”

Fellow eighth grader Grant Seering, also 14, said he has found the school climate is much friendlier without classmates glued to their phones.

“People are talking a lot more, even with teachers. (It’s) a more fun atmosphere here,” he said. “You have to do other things, like actually talk to your friends.”

The invention of the mobile is the latest revolution in the field of communications, and that is why we present an essay on mobile phone for students, in which we show the importance of the mobile, and that it has become a necessity for every person.

When you are asked to write an essay on mobile phone for students, you must mention the characteristics of the mobile, its advantages and disadvantages, in addition to instructions for using the mobile in a correct manner because the mobile has become used by young and old, the poor and the rich.

The invention of the mobile

When the mobile was invented as a means of communication, that was a wonderful thing, because it was easy to connect, and it made us able to communicate anywhere. Where, before the invention of the mobile, we used the home telephone or the central telephone, which was connected by wires to the main network, and its faults were many, in addition to the inability to have a phone call except when we were at home or the office.

And you can’t make a video call and international contacts were very difficult.

Then the invention of the mobile came to bring about a great revolution in the field of communications, and the mobile was used for communication only, then the inventions that developed the mobile in terms of form and capabilities followed.

Mobile and internet

When the Internet was invented, the biggest revolution occurred in the world of communications, as there are many mobile applications that we can use when the Internet is present.

These applications make us able to make video communications (video chat), make videos, or use the mobile to photograph and transmit events as they occur.

We were also able by using the mobile and the internet to do business, pay bills, send or receive money, and many other uses of the mobile.

Mobile pros

The mobile has become a necessity for every person. Some countries even make your mobile number among the basic information that you must register in your personal data. The mobile number has become as important as the national number.

There is no doubt that the advantages of the mobile phone are many, and this depends on the way the mobile is used, and in the essay on mobile phone for students we will mention some of these advantages:

1- Ease of communication and its many forms

The mobile has become a wonderful means of communication, and it has allowed us to have many forms of communication, such as voice calling or video chatting, or sending voice messages, text messages and other various forms of communication.

This feature has completely changed our lives, as communication has become very easy, and this has provided opportunities to complete business remotely, as well as business management and team leadership.

The mobile has played a major role in relieving the pain of alienation, as we can talk to people residing in other countries, and communicate with them by voice and video, which made us reassure them, and made them share with us in all matters of life.

2- The mobile is a news and media tool

The world has become a small village thanks to the mobile and the Internet, so we can know the news of any country, no matter how far the distance is between us, and the news is transmitted directly by audio and video, leaving no way for doubt.

There is no doubt that each of us follows local or international news in a field that he likes, as there are those who follow football matches, news of the Russian-Ukrainian war, technological progress, or follow the stock exchange, currency rates, gold prices, and so on.

3- The mobile is a means of entertainment

The mobile is an easy-to-use entertainment tool that is not expensive, and in the essay on mobile phone for students we will mention examples of this.

At any time we can watch what we like from movies, songs, football matches or other means of entertainment, and all of this happens without any trouble or any Cost.

Also, electronic games, which a number of people can play together, have become attractive to many young people and adolescents.

4- The mobile phone is used to do business

One of the advantages of the mobile is that it provided an opportunity to manage work remotely, so you can follow up on the work team from wherever you are, exchange documents with them, give them orders and other work-related matters.

It is no longer necessary to come to the workplace, as you can follow everything with the work team by mobile.

There are also many jobs in which the mobile is the main factor, such as advertising, marketing, agreement with customers, and so on.

5- Uses the mobile as an educational tool

The mobile has become an effective educational tool, and in the essay on mobile phone for students we will explain the importance of the mobile as an educational tool, where through the mobile we can read books, watch educational content on YouTube, or participate in private groups for distance learning and so on.

The use of the mobile phone is not limited to academic education only, but through the mobile phone we can learn any profession or craft, as there are millions of videos that provide educational content in all fields.

6- Use of mobile in banking services

There is no doubt that the mobile has become a financial wallet, through which we can send money to someone, or receive money, and we can also use the mobile to pay bills, buy and sell.

Also, we can inquire about our mobile bank accounts, and upon withdrawal, a message comes to us from the bank on the mobile stating the banking transaction that has taken place.

7- The mobile phone helps us in making decisions

Any decision we make in our lives in general depends on the availability of information, and the mobile phone has become a way to know the information that determines the decision that you will make.

For example, knowing the traffic situation and areas of traffic congestion, or knowing the prices of currencies and gold moment by moment, knowing the train times, knowing the flight times and whether there are vacant places, the price of the ticket, and other important information on the basis of which you make your decision.

8- The mobile is a great store of information

We can store on the mobile a lot of information, whether it is files, videos, photos, documents, and so on. The benefit of the mobile was not limited to storing information only, but there is another advantage which is the ease of retrieval of this data.

Thus, we find that the mobile works as a computer, but the advantages of the mobile lie in its small size, and that it accompanies us everywhere.

9- Use your mobile phone to locate places

The mobile is used to determine the location through the GPS application, which is used by most drivers, especially taxi drivers, and the mobile is also used to call a taxi through some applications.

Disadvantages of mobile

There is no doubt that the mobile phone is a great invention, and it has many advantages. However, it also has drawbacks, and in the essay on mobile phone for students we will mention some of these shortcomings:

1- Wasting time

One of the biggest disadvantages of the mobile is that it wastes a lot of our time uselessly, due to the many attractive and interesting applications, in addition to electronic games and other funny videos, movies, series, etc., which makes us move from one application to another and waste a lot of time without using it for something useful.

2- Spreading rumors and lies

Due to the lack of strict control over everything that is presented through social networking sites, the mobile has become a means for spreading rumors, lies, and misinformation, and therefore we must verify the news before we promote it.

3- Social isolation

One of the most dangerous defects of the mobile phone is the phenomenon of social isolation. Every person has his own virtual world, which is greatly integrated into it, as the virtual world has become more important for some people than the real world.

This led to social distancing between members of the same family, and everyone in the family had different interests and ideas from the rest of the family, and this is a big mistake that must be addressed.

4- Loss of privacy

One of the most serious negatives of the mobile phone that we will talk about in the essay on mobile phone for students is the loss of privacy, as it has become easy for anyone to obtain your personal information, such as where you live and your job or family members and friends, as well as knowing your tendencies and interests and other personal matters that shouldn’t be  known by others.

5- Financial cost

In many cases, the mobile phone constitutes a high financial cost for many groups, especially since each family member buys his own mobile phone. Also, teenagers and young people tend to change their mobiles on an ongoing basis to acquire the latest mobiles. This is considered a significant cost to poor or middle-income families.

And we can write in the essay on mobile phone for students a summary of the advantages as follows:

  • Mobile has made our lives easier, and mobile has made a revolution in the field of communications.
  • The mobile is the most important news medium, so many people no longer watch TV or listen to the radio.
  • The mobile is used as an educational tool in all fields.
  • The mobile is a means of entertainment for all age groups, and it also allows the person to choose what suits him.
  • The mobile has provided many remote functions, and it is also possible to follow up on managing the business remotely.
  • Mobile helps us to make the right decisions as a result of obtaining information through it.
  • The mobile is a financial wallet and we use it in banking transactions.
  • The mobile works as a computer, and we can keep a lot of information on the mobile, such as files, photos, videos, etc.

We can write in the essay on mobile phone for students a summary of the defects as follows:

  • Wasting time is one of the most dangerous defects of the mobile phone, because everyone falls prey to it. For the most part, no one has been able to resist the temptation of different mobile applications, and from here most of us spend hours watching videos, listening to music, etc.
  • Social isolation is also a serious defect of the mobile phone, which may lead to our separation from reality, and the occurrence of disintegration in the family and society.
  • The loss of privacy is one of the drawbacks of mobile, as it becomes easy for anyone to find out personal information about you.
  • Excessive financial cost, as the price of mobiles is always increasing, in addition to the fact that teenagers and young people prefer to replace their mobile phones with newer ones on an ongoing basis.

Instructions for using the mobile

Undoubtedly, the benefits of the mobile phone are many, and we can benefit the most of the mobile phone and eliminate its shortcomings, by specifying the purpose of using the mobile, determining the time that we will spend in conversation, watching a video, knowing the news, or other things.

And we must be adhered to the time we have set, and there must be time dedicated to the family, and also time to practice our favorite sports and hobbies, all of which makes us not addicted to using the mobile. Thus, we can take  the advantages of the mobile and avoid its disadvantages.

At the end of the essay on mobile phone for students, we presented a short essay on the mobile phone, a paragraph on the advantages of the mobile, an article about the disadvantages of the mobile, and we also gave instructions for using the mobile correctly.

I hope that you have benefited from the essay on mobile phone for students, and that you liked the topic.

the essay about mobile phone

Looking at the year’s notable video essays, many grapple with issues at the heart of contemporary media itself. There are dissections of video-playing tools, exposés of how corporations restrict access, contrasts between tropes and reality, and thorough investigations of trends in plagiarism and/or fabrication. As the essay landscape refines, it seems to peer inward as much as out.

On the making of this list: I’ve been trying to stay up to date on video essays for a while, and have been contributing to lists and/or voting in polls about the best videos made each year since 2018. Over this time, doing these kinds of roundups has gotten exponentially more difficult. As YouTube has grown to become a mega-business hosting powerful creators (part of the general trend of social media video sites becoming the new primary forum for cultural influence), I’ve seen essayists I once thought of as niche accrue follower counts in the millions. It’s been surreal. For this year’s list, I tried to shake things up by keeping the essayists who have appeared in previous editions to a minimum, along with the usual considerations about incorporating a diversity of creator backgrounds and video style. Once again, the videos are presented simply in order of publishing date.

[Also, I’m going to preface this with a mega mea culpa: It was absolute malpractice of me to not include Platformer Toolkit by Game Maker’s Toolkit in the best video essays of 2022 list . I don’t have a good excuse, either; I just straight up missed the essay at the time it came out, and then overlooked it during my catch-up phase at the end of the year. But an essay about game design that instructs you on its ideas by letting you actively engage with them through interactivity feels like a breakthrough in the form.]

Practices of Viewing by Johannes Binotto

Johannes Binotto is a Swiss researcher and lecturer who has been adding to his “Practices of Viewing” series for several years now, and every installment preceding 2023’s videos, “Ending” and “Description,” is well worth checking out. With each essay, Binotto examines a specific element of the media viewing interface, and how they affect an audience’s engagement with it. Some subjects, like fast-forwarding, pausing, or muting, may seem like obvious touchstones, while others, like sleep, are more out-there approaches to the conversation.

A History of the World According to Getty Images by Richard Misek

This technically debuted last year, making the rounds at film festivals, but it was made available online this past spring, so I’m including it here. A History of the World According to Getty Images is a great example of a work embedding its own ethos into its construction. Misek, another academic, is scrutinizing how for-profit companies (specifically Getty Images) mediate information that’s supposed to be available for all. In practice, a great deal of visual material that’s technically in the public domain can only be accessed in decent quality by paying an archive like Getty. Misek circumvents this by paying the fee to use select footage in this essay and then making this essay itself available for anyone to cite and clip from, putting that footage out into the world for real.

The Faces of Black Conservatism by F.D Signifier

I feel that video essays that consist mainly of the creator talking directly into a camera stretch the definition of the term – to me, the best cinematic and argumentative potential of the form lies in the power of editing. F.D Signifier’s contrast between fictional depictions of Black conservatives and the reality of how they appear across media exemplifies is what sets him apart in this genre: not just the depth of his thought (though it is considerable), but also the playful ways in which he presents the objects of his discussion. The running gag here in which he films himself holding hairstyling tools over the heads of various people on his screen had me laughing harder with each appearance.

Games That Don’t Fake the Space by Jacob Geller/Why We Can’t Stop Mapping Elden Ring by Ren or Raven

I don’t actually think this is the best essay Jacob Geller released this year (that would be either “Games that Aren’t Games” or “How Can We Bear to Throw Anything Away?” ), but it pairs so incredibly well with Renata Price’s essay (an impressive video debut building on her experience as a games critic) that it felt more appropriate to present them as a double feature. Both videos are sharp examinations of the ways that video games conjure physical space. Geller illuminates the shortcuts and tricks games often employ through examples of ones that, as the title suggests, don’t use such devices, while Price analyzes the impulses beneath what one could call the “cartographic instinct” in open-world games.

Why Do Brands Keep Doing These Crazy Influencer Trips?? by Mina Le

It’s been encouraging in recent years to see Le grow more confident in her mixing of media in her videos on fashion and film/television. You might remember the controversy around Shein granting influencers a limited hangout in a clothing factory this past summer. Le contextualizes this story by delving into the wider, supremely odd world of sponsored tours. If you watch this on your phone, the transitions between Le speaking to the camera and the clips of TikToks and other videos and photos flow together in a manner not unlike how one would scroll a social media feed, creating queasy resonance between message and medium.

Feeling Cynical About Barbie by Broey Deschanel / The Plastic Feminism of Barbie by Verilybitchie

I present these two videos not as a contrarian attack on Barbie (a film I enjoyed), but to highlight the important role of considered critical voices that dissent against prevailing opinions. Both Maia Wyman and Verity Ritchie unpack the issues with a heavily corporate product attempting to capitalize on feminist sentiment. Ritchie emphasizes the history of Barbie the brand and how the movie fits into it, while Wyman reads more into the specifics of the film’s plot. Together these videos do a good job of elaborating on legendary critic Amy Taubin’s Barbie reaction : “It’s about a fucking doll !’”

TikTok Gave Me Autism: The Politics of Self Diagnosis by Alexander Avila

There’s a lot of social media discourse over who can and can’t — and should or shouldn’t — claim the label of “autistic.” As someone who’s struggled with both the logistics and appropriateness of sussing out whether I’m on the spectrum, this video hit me hard. There are parts that feel like they veer so far into philosophical query that they threaten to obfuscate rather than elucidate the subject, but the essay as a whole is undeniably compelling. Avila’s own confessed stake in the question of self-diagnosis is itself affecting. This is the most searingly personal video on this list, uniting self-inquiry with rigorous research.

Chaste/Unchaste by Maryam Tafakory

This years shortest entry is a deceptively simple interrogation of the concept of “chastity” as defined by Iranian censorship standards. Takafory is a veteran of the academic essay scene, and I’m delighted by the opportunity to present her work to a wider audience. The video’s text is minimal, and its visuals are simply a montage of clips from Iranian films, but the implicit question of propriety grips the viewer with each cut.

Journey to Epcot Center: A Symphonic History by Defunctland

This is the most boundary-pushing essay on this year’s list. Completely lacking commentary, it instead emphasizes visuals and reenactment in telling the story of how Disney’s Epcot park went from concept to realization over the decades. Kevin Perjurer also provides a detailed set of notes that are meant to be read along with watching the video, further demanding one’s full attention. This is a direct acknowledgement of how we use the internet, the windowed experience of browsing and watching videos. I don’t think everything works; many of the reenactments, while impressively professional, feel somewhat redundant. But I’d prefer a creator take big swings that result in a few flaws rather than play it safe, and I hope both Perjurer and others continue in such an experimental vein.

Plagiarism and You(Tube) by Hbomberguy

Harry Brewis is popular enough that he doesn’t need any boost, but even in the very brief period since this video’s release as of the time of writing, Plagiarism and You(Tube) has made seismic impact on the YouTuber scene . Does it need to be almost four hours long? Maybe not. Yet the sheer volume of evidence it pulls together to support various accusations of plagiarism does seem vital. The main focus of the piece, James Somerton, went into lockdown over the fairly comprehensive evidence presented against him (and has since attempted to apologize ). I’m seeing conversations flourish around the endemic problem of plagiarism on the internet and what is to be done about it, and a surge of creators recognizing and calling out others who have taken their work without credit. There’s a deeper issue at play here, which is that the growth of YouTube entertainment has come with a truly daunting mountain of crap content that nonetheless attracts views (and thus dollars).

On the subject of low quality standards on YouTube, beyond plagiarism, Todd in the Shadows’ recent exhaustive effort to fact-check various false claims Somerton has made in his work is a useful supplement to this video.
