With ‘Lalisa,’ Blackpink’s Brightest Star Steps Into the Spotlight

2021 has been a year of hotly anticipated music releases, but few have been as eventful as the debut single from BlackPink wordsmith , Lalisa Manoban aka Lisa . As one-fourth of the world’s biggest girl group, Lisa has broken barriers for K-Pop performers, but stepping into her own with new music meant reintroducing herself to the world. “2021 has felt like fate, like destiny,” she shared via email. “Releasing my long-awaited first solo album was truly a dream come true. I don’t think I can ever forget that. I was excited and nervous; I wanted to show who I am as an artist, as well as share the exact message that ‘Lalisa’ carries.”

The song takes the confident, playful persona she’s been known for since her days as a YG Entertainment trainee and sets it to music with lyrics like “being the greatest of all time ain’t a fantasy.” Originally from Buriram, Thailand, she incorporated elements of her heritage into the sound. “My ideas are reflected in the album, from the Thai-style melody line within the song to the music video sets, styling, album design, and choreography,” says Lisa. “I actively participated throughout the entire process, [so] personally it was an extraordinary experience. I worked hard just imagining the day I would get to showcase it and enjoy it with all my fans.”

Instantly viral—it has racked up 110 million streams since being released—the single currently sits atop Spotify’s charts and has been warmly received by critics and the “BLINKs,” BlackPink’s army of fans. Thanks to Spotify and social media, Lisa has been able to see the responses in real-time. “It’s cool to be able to directly see and hear what my fans like and are currently listening to,” says Lisa. “It also feels like we’ve become closer since we’re all sharing something that we enjoy through the platform. If this album brought joy to our BLINKs, then I couldn’t be more grateful. They’re the reason my music has received so much love and support.” Thanks to their devotion, Lisa now sits atop the Today’s Top Hits playlist , next to superstars like Dua Lipa and Adele. “I’m honored to have my name alongside such amazing artists,” says Lisa. “[Spotify] is so helpful for catching up with global music trends. You get inspired through all the diverse music you get to see at just a glance.”

For Lisa, variety is essential in music and fashion. That style philosophy is on full display in the music video for ‘Lalisa, ’ where she switches outfits fourteen times. Amongst the gems that feature onscreen are pieces from John Paul Gaultier, Alexander Vauthier and Vivienne Westwood. There is also golden tribute to Thai traditional dress; Lisa's custom cape top and mini-skirt by Asava designer Polpat Asavaprapha worn with a chada-inspired headdress by Prapakas Angsusingha and jasmine ear-cuffs created by designer Sarran Youkongdee of Saraan was a bonafide moment. “Fashion and I are inseparable,” says Lisa. “It’s important to me because fashion—along with music—is my way of expressing myself. I get inspired by the various styles, and I’ve learned to be confident [in my choices]. And also, it’s just fun!”

The melange of influences represented in the four-minute clip and her electric off-duty wardrobe connects with how she consumes fashion. Lisa pays close attention, whether she’s browsing online, flipping through magazines, or seated in the front row during Paris Fashion Week. “Fashion reflects contemporary culture and trends of the times, so I try to keep up to date,” she says. “I [wanted] to broaden my horizons by trying out as many different kinds of concepts as possible and show the sides of ‘Lisa’ that people haven’t really seen before.”

Experimentation resulted in dynamic looks on-screen and off-duty. Her personal style caught the attention of Hedi Slimane, who tapped her for the role of brand ambassador at Celine in September of 2020. “[This time] I did go for some bolder visual direction in my styling, experimenting with styles that I’ve wanted to try,” says Lisa. “Not only with the clothes, but also with my hair, makeup, and nails.”

With the video and single both racking up millions of streams, Lisa’s laying the foundations for an impressive solo career. Still, she’s not overly concerned with hitting milestones or winning awards. “Rather than focusing on those kinds of records and achievements, I just hope that the message my music carries can reach and touch many people,” she says, crediting her team and fellow BlackPink members for the role they’ve played in her solo success. “I could never have come this far on my own,” she says. “It’s the many lessons I’ve learned through [our] albums and help I received from numerous staff and team members, and the loving support of my fans; it’s thanks to all these things that so many people now recognize who I am as an artist. It makes me want to work towards bringing something new to the table in the future.”

With the music video for 'SG' her collaboration with DJ Snake and Megan Thee Stallion premiering today and a collection with MAC Cosmetics launching this December, Lisa has plenty on her plate. Still, she’s ready for whatever is on the horizon. “I’m looking forward to who I’ll become in the future,” she says. “I’ve started to think about what other aspects of myself I’d eventually like to show everyone. I think I will have to work even harder, especially with this fresh energy I received from my fans. I hope to continue to create positive energy and become an artist they’re proud of.”

Blackpink’s Lisa on Her Big Ambitions — and Why Going Solo Made Her Nervous

By Haeryun Kang

Haeryun Kang

L alisa Manobal was 14 when her life changed in an instant. In 2010, she attended an audition for YG Entertainment in her native Thailand — and became the only person to get accepted among 4,000 aspiring trainees. Soon after, she moved to Seoul, alone, without knowing a word of Korean (she’s now fluent), calling her mom in Bangkok every day.

Lisa has a knack for putting others at ease, laughing and joking easily, but onstage and onscreen, her eyes change: They’re alight with ferocity, as she raps, dances, and sings, an unfaltering symbol of the swag and confidence that’s Blackpink ’s calling card. Speaking in Korean and English, she talks about how she loves Blackpink but also has ambitions to try new things. Her 2021 solo single “Lalisa” is infused with a maximalist mix of rap, EDM, brass riffs, and even traditional Thai instruments. Another solo single, “Money,” dethroned Drake to take the top spot on  Billboard ’s Rap Digital Songs Sales chart. “I respect everyone’s roles within Blackpink,” she says. “I don’t want to break this image; I want to keep doing what I do within Blackpink. But personally, I have so many things I want to try. I love photography, I want to try acting, and more.”

(In celebration of Blackpink’s appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone , we’re publishing individual digital covers with each member of the group; check back throughout this week for more.)

You’re Blackpink’s main dancer and lead rapper, and you also sing. What are you bad at? Interviews! It’s so hard to express myself through language. Even in Thai. Like, when you ask, “Do you have anything to say to your fans?” In my head, there are so many things, but I don’t know which words to use. I’m completely confident expressing myself through my body, like, “Ohhh, my gawwwd, this is my stage!” But when it comes to speaking, it’s hard for me. I’m actually sweating now. So nervous.

It makes sense that you’re fluent in Thai and Korean. How did you come to speak English so well? I don’t! I learned English at school in Thailand. I went to a full Thai school until sixth grade. Since middle school I went to a bilingual school — well, not bilingual; they had an English program where you learn every subject in English. I have a little Thai accent when I speak English, so people can tell, “Oh, you’re not from here.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

You took part in dance competitions as a child in Thailand. Is that what you wanted to do? What was your childhood dream? A stewardess! I once went to Singapore with my family. I saw the beautiful flight attendants on Singapore Airlines, wearing this uniform — a really long dress with sleeves down to the elbow, maybe purple fabric, with patterns. And this pretty unni [“older sister” in Korean] talked to me in English: “Do you want some milk?” And I was like, “Wow, yes please!” So as soon as we landed in Singapore, I begged my mom to buy me their uniform, which she did. But sadly, I didn’t meet the height requirements — you have to be tall enough to reach the overhead luggage.

And then you trained to become a dancer, with encouragement from your mom. I’ve been going to dance classes since I was five. I competed in all these dance competitions. My dad would just say, “Oh, you won? Nice!” And that was that — it’s a dad thing. My mom was my audience at home, when I danced to the dance CDs she bought. Turns out, her dream was to be an actor. So when I was little, she sent me to acting and dancing classes. I hated acting. I was a baby, trying to memorize lines, but I didn’t know how to read! How could I memorize lines? I was bullied by an oppa [“older brother” in Korean] in my class, because I couldn’t read. I was, like, four.

You called your mom every day after you moved here to become a trainee. She’d say, “Don’t come back! Just hang on for another year!” There would be times when I’d say, “I just want to go back to school.” Our debut plans kept being pushed back and back, and I couldn’t see the end of this. “When was this going to end? Like, when?! Do we have to get tested every single month?” When I told her, “I want to quit,” my mom would say, “Think about your situation. How many kids want to be in your place? If you give up and come home, do you think you can have a normal life? You’re just going to try again. You’re here now, just hold on until the end.”

More than a decade later, you’re one of K-pop’s biggest stars. How do the young YG trainees greet you? Do you give them advice? They bow, like, 90 degrees, “ Annyeonghaseyo! ” [formal “hello” in Korean]. There is a Thai trainee that reminds me of when I was young. I’m trying to take care of her. It’s not so much about giving advice. We eat together, go shopping. She’s 17 and has been here for nearly two years. I asked her once, “Is there anything you’re struggling with?” And she started to cry. “I want to dance like you, unni, but I’m so bad, and I’m so sad about that.” I just tell her, “Keep practicing!”

I can see why she looks up to you. When you appear in Blackpink videos, the screen lights up. But you also know how to play — how to not take yourself too seriously. You know, I’ve never thought about it like that. You’re the first one to say it in such detail. Normally, people just tell me, “You look great! You look cool!” When I’m shooting a music video, there’s so much to care about: pretty facial expressions, outfits, is my hair too messy? And so on. But I also have all these ideas that I imagine for my particular scene. Should I try this gesture? Or that? Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way I want. But I just do things. I just try.

Many fans think of you as “Blackpink’s best dancer.” Do you sometimes want to break this image, or try different things? I respect everyone’s roles within Blackpink. I don’t want to break this image; I want to keep doing what I do within Blackpink. But personally, I have so many things I want to try. I love photography, I want to try acting, and more.

What are you curious about in music? Blackpink is trying different songs, but there’s still a lot we haven’t done. Reggae, even jazz, like you said before. Is hip-hop the only thing I’m good at? What if it turns out I’m also good at traditional Thai music? I’m curious to know how much I can expand what I do. Even within dance, there are so many genres I haven’t tried, like contemporary dance! Music-wise, dance-wise, I feel like I still have to learn more.

Are there any artists or colleagues who make you jealous? Not so much jealousy — Rosalía is so cool. She has her own Spanish culture, that’s inside her person, that influences her music. When you see her, you think, “Oh, she’s Spanish.” And she uses her culture so well, making it into her own thing. In [my 2021 solo single] “Lalisa,” I wanted to create a Thai atmosphere.

I just want people to know I’m Thai. Some people don’t know: “Oh, she’s part of a girl group from Korea, so maybe she’s Korean.” So I talked to our producer, Teddy, who put different Thai sounds into my music.

What was it like to go solo, standing onstage alone? Nervous. Very nervous. Normally when the four of us are together — let’s say Chaeyoung [Rosé] gives her 100 percent. Then the rest of us can feel it onstage. And unconsciously I also get this energy of “Shoot, I need to do more too.” We boost each other in that way. But if I stand alone, it’s different. I can’t take energy from anybody. It just has to come from me. And the fans just watch only me. It was a huge burden. But what can you do? This is my solo! I just practice and monitor myself a lot.

Your producer, Teddy Park, is probably one of the most important people for Blackpink. How does he stimulate you musically? Oppa  knows how to speak to me, and I understand him. And then he pushes so hard. He’d say, “Again, again, again. A little more, a little prettier.” In the past, I used to only rap. One day, he told me to try vocals. But I’m so bad at singing. At least, there was a time when I was really bad. That whole year between “As If It’s Your Last” [2017] and “Ddu-du Ddu-du” [2018] was really rough for me. When I went to the studio to record, nothing came out. I cried. I felt like I was bringing the team down.  Oppa  pushed me hard. “You can’t? No. Try harder. Go back in there.” Because of Teddy, I overcame that time. I feel a little more confident about singing now.

In Light Up the Sky, the 2020 Netflix documentary about Blackpink, you said, “I’m a role model in Thailand, but I don’t even know what kind of a musician I’ll be.” What did you mean by that? Whenever I go to Thailand, there’s this new generation of babies that all look up to me: “I want to be like Lisa, unni !” But when I look at myself, I am lacking in so many areas. There are so many things I don’t know because I’m still young. They look up to me as an idol, but I still don’t think I’m perfect enough to be their idol. Am I there yet? Am I ready? I’m actually really curious. In what ways am I an idol to those kids? I still feel I have a long way to go.

You went back to Thailand recently for your birthday. How was it? It was the first time in three years. My mom and dad are getting old. Now we don’t have quarantine; it’s easier to travel. Whenever I have time, I want to return to Thailand. I don’t want to waste my time. I don’t want to say, “I don’t care what the company is gonna say!” But I want to see them as often as I can.

What do you miss most about living with your family? I miss traveling together. My dad is Swiss, and he really values having a family day. We’d go to a mall together. And at least once or twice a year, we went traveling abroad together. I miss that so much. When Blackpink was doing the world tour, we did visit Europe together. That was so convenient because of packing. “Mom, come, please,” I’d say, and she’d just pack all my stuff. “Mom, take out my stuff, please,” and she’d unpack. It’s the best.

You’ll be her baby forever. I actually asked her, “Mom, how old do you think I look?” She said, to her, I’ll always be five.

Do you still talk to your mom on the phone everyday? You mentioned in the past that she takes care of your finances. I talked to her this morning. It’s her birthday soon. I just asked her, “Where are you gonna go on your birthday?” And she doesn’t take care of my finances anymore! Since debut, I’ve been managing my own money. I buy whatever I want. The advantage to Mom managing my money was, there was always a limit to how much I could spend a month. But now that I’m alone … “Huh? Where did it go?”

It’s clear that family is the most important thing in your life. Who is the funniest? My dad has the typical middle-aged-man humor. Mom is really affectionate and cute. I love their dynamics together. Daddy is like, “Ugh, whatever,” while Mom goes, “ Ooooh , Daddy.” Just watching them makes me laugh.

Have you ever wondered what will happen if Blackpink ends one day? I don’t think we’ve even talked about this amongst ourselves. We’ve jokingly said, “Jisoo unni is going to live in Hawaii. Lisa will return to Thailand,” but I don’t want to think about the end. It’s too sad. Someday we’ll get married and things like that. But then I see the Spice Girls, how they got together for a reunion concert. Can we do that too someday? Will I be able to dance then, like I do now? I mean, won’t Blackpink last at least 10 more years? We’ll be nearly 40 by then.

Who will Lisa be in her forties? I don’t know. I’ll still have good vibes, doing different things, like now.

What are you up to these days? We’re all going back and forth from the recording studio, or doing our own stuff, or going abroad because of fashion business. I’ve been working nonstop for the past week without a break. If I have a day off, I just stay at home. After this interview, I have nothing else scheduled today. I think I’ll go back to the house. . . . You know, in this interview, I wanted you to feel like my answers were coming from inside me, without a filter, as honestly as possible. I don’t have the prettiest words to tell you. I only have what’s inside me.

About

Lalisa Manoban (ปราณปริยา มโนบาล; born Pranpriya Manoban ), better known by her stage name Lisa , is a Thai singer, rapper, dancer, and a member of the K-pop group Blackpink under YG Entertainment.

She was born on March 27, 1997 in Buriram, Thailand as an only child. Her mom is Thai and her stepfather, Marco Bruschweiler, is a Swiss renown chef in Thailand.

Predebut and Childhood

In 2009, she joined the dance group We Zaa Cool in Thailand along with Bambam (from GOT7) and Ten (from NCT and SuperM). In 2010, at the age of 13, she auditioned for YGE during their Thailand auditions and ranked 1st; she was the only individual to pass the audition. In 2011, Lisa officially became part of YGE, moved to South Korea, and embarked on her new journey as a trainee where she practiced Korean, dancing, rapping, and singing.

In her early trainee days, she struggled communicating with others as she had no previous knowledge of Korean and others in the company were not allowed to speak to her in English in order to improve her Korean quickly. Her bandmates were very supportive throughout this time as she was the only non-Korean member of Blackpink. In 2013, prior to her debut, she made a small appearance in Taeyang's music video Ringa Linga.

Lisa spent over 5 years training with YG Entertainment before officially debuting with Blackpink in 2016. In November 2018, she officially released her YouTube channel, Lilifilm Official , which quickly garnered millions of subscribers. In October 2019, she joined the iQiyi’s Chinese survival show Idol Producer as a judge and mentor.

Lalisa Manobal (also spelled Manoban ; born Pranpriya Manobal ; March 27, 1997), known mononymously as Lisa ( Hangul : 리사 ), is a Thai rapper, singer and dancer. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink , which debuted under YG Entertainment in August 2016.

Lisa made her solo debut with her single album Lalisa in September 2021, which made her the first female artist to sell 736,000 copies of an album in its first week in South Korea. The music video for its lead single of the same name broke the record for the most-viewed music video in the first 24 hours on YouTube by a solo artist. Both "Lalisa" and the album's viral second single "Money" charted in the top ten of the Billboard Global 200, the latter becoming the longest-charting song by a female K-pop soloist on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart . Lalisa and "Money" became the first album and song by a K-pop solo artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify , respectively.

Lisa earned several accolades throughout her career, including the most Guinness World Records won by a K-pop soloist with eight, a Gaon Chart Music Award, a Mnet Asian Music Award, and the first MTV Video Music Award and MTV Europe Music Award ever won by a K-pop soloist. She is the most-followed K-pop artist on Instagram, as well as the most-subscribed K-pop solo artist on YouTube. Lisa was honored as a cultural ambassador leader by the Thailand Ministry of Culture and has been acknowledged by former Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha for her contributions to spreading Thai culture globally.

1997–2010: Early life and education

2012–2015: pre-debut activities, 2016–present: debut with blackpink and solo ventures, endorsements, fashion and photography, philanthropy, single albums, other charted songs, songwriting credits, music videos, other videos, television shows, state honors, world records, life and career.

Born Pranpriya Manobal on March 27, 1997, in Buriram Province, Thailand, she later legally changed her name to Lalisa, meaning "the one being praised", at the advice of a fortune teller for prosperity. An only child, she was raised by her Thai mother, Chitthip Brüschweiler, and Swiss stepfather and chef Marco Brüschweiler. Lisa completed secondary education at Praphamontree School I and II. She is multilingual ; along with her native Thai, she speaks fluent Korean and English, as well as basic Japanese and Chinese.

After enrolling in dance classes at the age of four, she began competing regularly in contests, including in To Be Number One, and joined the eleven-member dance crew We Zaa Cool alongside BamBam of Got7 . In September 2009, the crew entered the LG Entertainment Million Dream Sanan World competition broadcast on Channel 9 and won the Special Team Award. Lisa also participated as a school representative in the singing contest Top 3 Good Morals of Thailand, hosted by the Moral Promotion Center in early 2009, finishing as the runner-up.

In 2010, at age 13, Lisa auditioned to join South Korean record label YG Entertainment in Thailand. She gained an interest in the K-pop industry in her childhood, admiring artists such as BigBang and 2NE1 , and aspired to follow a similar path. Among the 4,000 applicants, she was the only individual to qualify, which prompted then-CEO Yang Hyun-suk into offering Lisa a chance to become a YG Entertainment trainee. At her audition, Lisa also impressed one of the judges, Danny Im of 1TYM, who later praised her on-stage confidence and her off-stage attitude.

In 2011, Lisa moved to South Korea to begin her formal training as a trainee. She officially joined the label as its first non-ethnically Korean trainee on April 11. In November 2013, she appeared in the music video for labelmate Taeyang 's single "Ringa Linga" as a background dancer alongside members of labelmates and boy bands iKon and Winner. In March 2015, Lisa undertook her first modelling job for the streetwear brand Nona9on, followed by South Korean cosmetics brand Moonshot in 2016.

In August 2016, Lisa debuted as one of four members of South Korean girl group Blackpink , the first non-ethnically Korean artist under the label. The group's debut single album Square One featured lead singles "Whistle", which topped all South Korean charts upon debut, and "Boombayah". In 2018, Blackpink signed with Interscope Records in a global partnership with YG Entertainment.

Lisa became a permanent cast member on the Korea Army Academy edition of the MBC military variety program Real Man 300 from September 21, 2018, onward. Her first role on a television program since her debut, it earned her the unofficial Character of the Year award at the 2018 MBC Entertainment Awards.

On November 5, 2018, Lisa unveiled her YouTube channel, Lilifilm Official, focusing on travelling, lifestyle, and dance. As of July 2019, she has over 1.3 million subscribers and received a YouTube Gold Play Button. One of her dance performance videos went viral in 2020 as a result of a meme derived from the video; celebrities such as Dolly Parton , Stephen Colbert , James Corden , Luke Evans , and Lil Nas X participated in the trend.

In March 2020, Lisa served as the dance mentor on iQIYI's Chinese girl group survival program Youth With You Season 2 . In February 2021, she returned as dance mentor in the show's third season for boy groups .

On April 19, 2021, YG Entertainment revealed to The Korea Herald that Lisa would be the third member of Blackpink to debut as a soloist, with the official schedule to be announced later. On July 12, through Star News , the label revealed that filming for her music video was underway. Lisa's debut single album Lalisa and its lead single of the same name were released on September 10, 2021. The music video for "Lalisa" became the most-viewed video by a soloist in 24 hours with 73.6 million views, breaking the record held by Taylor Swift 's "Me!" featuring Brendon Urie , for which she earned two Guinness World Records . The song debuted at number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number two on the Billboard Global 200, becoming Lisa's first top-ten song on the latter. The album sold 736,221 copies in South Korea in its first week, setting the record for the highest first-week sales among female artists domestically and making Lisa the first female soloist to surpass the 500,000-copy mark in one week.

The album's B-side track "Money" received an exclusive dance performance video that was released to YouTube on September 24. The song witnessed a surge in popularity after it became viral on social media, and began to rise in the international charts. As a result, Interscope Records sent the song to US contemporary hit radio on November 9, 2021, as the album's second single. The single peaked at number ten on the Billboard Global 200, becoming Lisa's second top-ten hit after "Lalisa". In the US, it peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 90, earning Lisa her second career solo entry, and became the first song by a female K-pop soloist to chart for multiple weeks on the chart. "Money" peaked at number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and charted for eight weeks, becoming the longest-charting female K-pop soloist song in the country as well.

Lisa collaborated with French record producer DJ Snake, Puerto Rican singer Ozuna , and American rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the single "SG". The single was released on October 22, 2021, and featured songwriting and composition credits by Lisa. A music video starring the four artists in Miami was directed by Colin Tilley and released simultaneously with the single. The song peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Global 200.
