Step 1 : Visit the official website of the educational institute and go through all the details of the Ph.D. courses offered by the institute and select the area of research that the candidate wants to pursue.
Step 2 : Candidates need to keep an eye out for any admission advertisement in newspapers or visit the official website of the university to fill the application form for admission in the course of their choice. Usually, the admission notification is released 4-5 months before the commencement of the course cycle.
Step 3 : Next, candidates need to fill and submit their application forms for the Ph.D. course as per the schedule shared by the educational institute. Aspirants also need to ensure that they pay the application fee on time and submit all the required documents along with their application forms for Ph.D. admissions.
Step 4 : Some educational institutes also specify that candidates need to submit a research proposal along with their application form. The application form along with the research proposal is submitted at the Research Unit of the educational institute where scrutiny of the application is conducted.
Step 5 : After scrutiny of the Ph.D. course application form is complete then most of the educational institutes shortlist the names of the candidates who need to appear for the entrance exam and other admission rounds that are conducted for shortlisting aspirants for admission in Ph.D. programs offered by them.
Step 6 : Candidates who are selected for Ph.D. programs on the basis of the admission rounds are then assigned supervisors/ guides for their Ph.D. research.
PHD Course Structure
Steps that candidates need to follow when pursuing a Ph.D. course in order to be conferred a Ph.D. degree are listed below:
Once candidates are selected for Ph.D. courses offered at educational institutes they need to submit their Research Proposal along with their Research Topic.
Then, candidates are allocated a research supervisor/ guide.
After this candidates are provided details of the Course Work, evaluation methodology, and the teaching schedule by the Research Programme Coordinator/ Guide/ Supervisor.
While performing research work most educational institutes require aspirants to submit six-month progress reports for their research work.
Further, as a Research Student one needs to give at least two seminar presentations as part of their tenure as a Research Scholar and thereafter submit a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Research Unit.
Next, Ph.D. students need to publish at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed/refereed Journal and also submit a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Research Unit before they submit their Ph.D. thesis.
Before aspirants submit their thesis, their supervisor or guide will organize a Pre-submission Seminar. This seminar will be open to all. As part of this seminar, a report will be submitted which will include suggestions for improvement and the supervisor would ensure that candidates incorporate all these suggestions in the final thesis.
Candidates then need to incorporate all the changes and submit a summary of their thesis to their supervisor or guide at least 45 days before the submission of the thesis.
Finally, candidates need to submit their thesis in hard copy as well as soft copy. This thesis will be examined by external experts. In case any expert suggests any modifications in the research paper submitted by the candidate then he/ she needs to re-submit a modified thesis.
Next, a viva-voce is conducted wherein candidates can openly defend their thesis and present their point of view before a panel of experts.
Candidates who complete all these steps to perfection would only be conferred a Ph.D. degree.

The idea of introducing Geophysics as a subject of study in Andhra University was conceived during 1946, and the Department of Geophysics was started in 1949 to train students in two branches viz. (1) Meteorology and Oceanography and (2) Physics of Earth. It is not a mere coincidence that the Geological Survey of India had commenced extensive geophysical surveys for oil in the cambay basin a couple of years later in 1948. It signifies the vision of successive Vice-Chancellor of the university to initiate new courses to provide trained man power to cater to the new needs of the nation although Banaras Hindu University (BHU, Varanasi) has the credit of starting for the first time in the country a full fledged M.Sc Course in Geophysics. Consistent with the healthy practices that the university had followed, the department was initially headed, in succession, for proper orientation and direction by retired directors of India Meteorological Department, Dr. N. K. Sur and Dr. S. R. Savier, and later by Prof M.S.Krishnan, the renowned geologist and retired Director of Geological Survey of India. The erstwhile Department of Geophysics was bifurcated into Department of Geophysics and Department of Meteorology and Oceanography in 1962. Prof. C.Mahadevan headed the department in 1962 for short time and later Prof.B.S.R.Rao, who was deputed and trained at the Imperial College, London for the purpose, was appointed as Head of the Department of Geophysics in 1962. Prof. B.S.R.Rao developed the Department in his long tenure from 1962-1975. He was succeeded by savants like Prof.V. Bhaskar Rao, Prof. V. V. J. Sarma,Prof. P. Sitapathi Rao, Prof. I. V. Radhakrishna Murthy, Prof. T.K. S. Prakasa Rao,Prof. P.Rajendra Prasad, Prof. M. Gangadhara Rao, Prof. C. Visweswara Rao, Prof. C. Subba Rao, Prof. A. Lakshmipathi Raju, Prof. D. Bhaskara Rao, Prof. NVVBS Prasad, Prof K. V. V. Satyanarayana, Prof. P.Rama Rao, Sri M.R.S. Sampath Kumar, and Prof. SK.Kareemunisa Begum acted as Heads of the Department and under their stewardship the Department achieved National and International recognition in research field and also developed rich traditions, new techniques of teaching to the students. At present Prof. C. V. Naidu is acting as Incharge Head of the Department.
The curriculum of the Geophysics course has always been balanced blend of topics concerning structure and composition of the earth and exploration methods for locating oil, minerals and water. When a compromise had to be made, the tilt was always towards the latter. When it has been increasingly released that root cause for the dynamics of the earth's crust lies with the oceans, the University was prompt in introducing the 2 year M.Sc course in Marine Geophysics in 1976, again for the first time in India.
Hydrology has always been a part of the syllabus of the Geophysics course. Frequent failures of monsoon increased dependency on groundwater for agriculture and unpredicted cyclone every year brought out the need for a better management of water resources and identification of groundwater at larger depths. A part-time PG diploma course in "Hydrology and Groundwater Exploration" was started during 1980, and later it was upgraded to 2 year M.Sc course in Hydrology in the year 1985. This course ran up to the year 2014 successfully. This course maybe restored within short time with the permissions of University authorities.
Well qualified and highly experienced faculty manages the academic programs of the Department.Almost all the faculty have been trained at National Laboratories and habit to present papers in National and International conferences in their specialized fields.
The Association of Hydrologists of India (AHI) was initiated in 1981 with senior faculty of Department of Geophysics. The senior faculty of Department of Geophysics were responsible for a research center named as Center for Studies on Bay of Bengal in Andhra University.

What is Applied Geophysics
Applied geophysics is an interdisciplinary field that utilises the basic principles of physics to interpret subsurface phenomena. Applied geophysics mainly focuses on gathering and interpreting of data obtained on subsurface phenomena. These data are interpreted and the results are used for various practical purposes like gas and oil exploration, groundwater exploration, mineral exploration, geothermal exploration, archaeological interest, and so on. This branch of geology is often referred to as "quantitative geology". An easier definition claims geophysics to be a course where pupils learn the physics of the earth and its atmosphere. This includes studying oceanography, seismology , geomagnetism and volcanology.
Since humans cannot locate the mineral deposits under the surface with simple methods, we need fields like geophysics which helps in locating underground resources. Thanks to the rapid development in recent years, all geoscientists including geophysicists are in high demand. The energy industry is facing the greatest challenge in this respect. Hence, they are in need of efficient geophysicists.
Due to the importance of this course, applied geophysics is offered as a specialisation in a number of colleges across India. Applied geophysics is taught as a course that is a part of the wider course of geology. So the colleges also provide degrees with specialisation in applied geophysics. In this article, we shall discuss in detail the course of applied geophysics including the available courses, the job profiles, and upcoming trends in the field of geophysics.

- Geophysics Ph.D. Program
Once entered into the Geophysics Ph.D. Program, degree requirements explained below include course requirements, the Comprehensive Examination, and the dissertation defense.
Course Requirements
The geophysics Ph.D. course requirements, residency requirements, and the requirements for the Comprehensive Examination are formulated within the regulations of the Graduate School . Students are referred to the document, Graduate School Checklist for Graduation and Other Helpful Information , and the University Catalog for general information on requirements for the Ph.D. degree. In case of a conflict between those documents and the requirements stated here, the rules of the Graduate School apply.
A core of graduate courses , included in the minimum of 30 semester hours required for all Ph.D.'s, is specified for students completing the Ph.D. in geophysics. This core coursework is designed to assure competency in appropriate subject matter at the Ph.D. level. The number of required courses is limited, so that the student is free to design an overall academic program that meets his or her needs in terms of specialized scholarly interests.
The required courses for the Geophysics Ph.D. include the following:
- A three-semester sequence of geophysics courses: Earth and Planetary Physics I, II, and III (course numbers 6610, 6620, and 6630, cross-listed in the Geology, Physics, and Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Departments). These three courses do not have to be taken in any particular order. A student may petition the Geophysics Program Committee to substitute another course for one of these three core courses, but not for more than one.
- One semester of graduate-level applied mathematics selected from the list of Approved Math Courses on the Academics page. The student may petition the Geophysics Program Committee to substitute a comparable mathematics course for one of these courses. It is recommended, though not required, that students fulfill this requirement either before, or at the same time as, they take their first of the three core Earth and Planetary Physics courses.
- The student is also expected to take irregularly scheduled seminars on topics in solid earth geophysics, notably ASTR/GEOL/PHYS 6650.
- The student must take additional courses of his or her own choosing. The CU Graduate School requires a total of at least 30 semester credit hours. It is expected that the student, in consultation with his or her thesis advisor, will choose courses that are compatible with the student's research interests. Possible additional courses could include, but are not restricted to those listed on the Academics page.
Comprehensive Examination
A research project, preferably involving original research, must be written up as a paper (comparable to publishable quality) and provided to the committee members 2 weeks before the oral examination, where the student will briefly present the paper and answer any questions the committee has. Such a research project may be in the student's proposed thesis area but could also be in an unrelated area of geophysics. There should be at least 2 faculty from the geophysics program on the exam committee (which, per Graduate School rules, must have 5 faculty members), the composition of which should be approved by the chair of the geophysics program. Preferably the chair of the committee will not be the student's research advisor. The oral exam can include basic questions of geophysics to test the student's understanding of fundamental concepts. It is recommended that geophysics students complete their comps exam before the end of their 5th semester.
The proposed exam tests both geophysics knowledge as well as research skills.
By the time of the Comprehensive Examination, the student has applied for and been admitted to the Geophysics Program. Geophysics should be listed as the department on both the candidacy form and the examination report.
Dissertation Defense
The public defense of the dissertation is conducted in the usual way by a committee of 5 or more faculty, as approved by the geophysics program chair . The chair of the defense committee is normally the student's research advisor. Because the geophysics faculty is broadly interdisciplinary, the requirement that not all of the committee members for the defense be from one department is usually automatically satisfied.
If the student has a grievance that falls within the framework of the Program, every effort should be made to settle the difficulty by the discussion between the student and the faculty member or members directly involved. If such discussion fails to yield a resolution of the problem, the aggrieved student shall prepare a written statement describing the situation and present it to the Committee. The Committee shall meet with the student and the faculty members involved and shall render its decision on the appropriate resolution of the problem. If the student remains dissatisfied with the Committee's decision, he or she may file a formal complaint with the Dean of the Graduate School, who will involve the Graduate School's normal procedures for reaching a final resolution.
