Ozone Day Speech - International Ozone Day (September 16)

Every year on September 16, International Ozone Day is celebrated to draw attention to the harmful effects of ozone depletion and to highlight the importance of the ozone layer. This day is a reminder of the need to protect the ozone layer. It also highlights the need for more effective action. Several reports claim that the already affected ozone layer will continue to be affected for 50 to 100 years or more, which could worsen the human condition in the future. There are many ways to celebrate World Ozone Day, and one of them is to educate people about the benefits of protecting the ozone layer.

10 Lines on Ozone Day Speech

Short speech on ozone day, long speech on ozone day.

Ozone Day Speech - International Ozone Day (September 16)

Every year on September 16, we monitor the world's ozone layer and disseminate information about it.

The United Nations General Assembly declared this day as World Ozone Day.

Ozone is made up of three oxygen atoms and exists in the stratosphere.

It protects us from the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can be fatal to live organisms.

These rays can cause serious injuries such as cancer if the ozone is weakened.

However, scientists have found several holes in it, which is not a good sign.

This is due to environmental deterioration and rising temperatures.

Human activities that harm the environment should be monitored regularly.

Increased vehicle use, heating and cooling, and deforestation, even over short distances, are just a few factors contributing to ozone depletion.

Planting trees and using sustainable products protects the ozone layer.

Ozone Day is a day established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer. Also on this day, they talk about harmful substances that threaten the condition of the ozone layer. The United Nations General Assembly designated September 16 as Ozone Day because it signed the Montreal Protocol for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1987.

Every year, World Ozone Day for the preservation of the ozone layer is celebrated with a unique theme. This theme is presented by the United Nations and is the basis of numerous events, debates and celebrations around the world. This year's theme for ozone day 2022 was "Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth".

The theme of World Ozone Day 2022 represents the need to work together to overcome global crises such as climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer.

Ozone Layer Day is considered an important annual event. Many prominent global organisations gathered on this day to talk about the need to protect the ozone layer. Depletion of the ozone layer poses a serious threat to existing life on Earth. As such, events such as Ozone Day highlight global cooperation to eliminate substances and human activities that threaten the ozone layer.

The main purpose of celebrating World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness to people about the depletion of the ozone layer and to find possible solutions to save it. First, it is important to understand what the ozone layer is and why it is so important to human life. It contains high concentrations of ozone (O3) in different parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important for protecting human life because it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth from the sun. Plants cannot live or grow in strong UV light, and plankton cannot be food for most marine life. A weakening of the ozone layer will make people more vulnerable to skin cancer, cataracts and compromised immune systems.

However, there is an important point we need to keep in mind. Ozone can either protect the Earth or harm it. For example, if there is an ozone layer in the atmosphere's stratosphere, it acts as a protective barrier. However, when ozone is present in the troposphere (about 10 km above the Earth's surface), it is harmful. In the troposphere, it is a pollutant that can damage lung tissue and plants. Most of the ozone remains in the stratosphere, where it acts as a shield and protects the earth's surface from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 as World Ozone Layer Preservation Day to protect the ozone layer. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on substances that use up the Ozone Layer turned into signed, a global conference used to shield the ozone layer. It is designed to protect the Earth's ozone layer by stopping the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and reducing their concentrations in the atmosphere.

The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful environmental agreement signed in 1987. It established a mandatory schedule for phasing out ozone-depleting substances.

Governments of all countries take necessary steps to protect the ozone layer, but did you know that they can also take several other steps to protect the ozone layer? For example, it is said to minimise vehicle use. You may want to avoid using some cleaning products that are harmful to both you and the environment. What many people don't realise is that many cleaning products on the market today also contain caustics and solvents, and these harmful substances can be replaced with products that are not environmentally toxic, such as bicarbonate or vinegar. There are a few more things we can do to protect the ozone layer.

As responsible citizens, all we can do is educate people on this serious topic. We should share them with our friends, family and followers. It's a wonderful and inspiring job for us to do. One person doing something and another person doing it all add up to a big change.

Ozone Day is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol. This milestone led to a collaboration between 24 countries to protect the ozone layer and fight substances that threaten it. On September 16, 2009, the Montreal Protocol became one of the first treaties to receive universal ratification.

Sun in the sky

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet.

The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth.

Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change

This year Ozone Day is held under the theme Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change. Today, we celebrate the achievements of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This year’s theme highlights and reiterates the positive impact of the Montreal Protocol on ozone layer recovery and reducing climate change. Especially emphasizing the Kigali Amendment, which through the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and improved efficiency in the cooling sector, will provide additional climate mitigation benefits. The UNEP Ozone Secretariat has prepared a social media package in six languages, including cards, videos, and suggested messages, available on this Trello board .

A number of commonly used chemicals have been found to be extremely damaging to the ozone layer. Halocarbons are chemicals in which one or more carbon atoms are linked to one or more halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine). Halocarbons containing bromine usually have much higher ozone-depleting potential (ODP) than those containing chlorine. The man-made chemicals that have provided most of the chlorine and bromine for ozone depletion are methyl bromide, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and families of chemicals known as halons, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

The scientific confirmation of the depletion of the ozone layer prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer. This was formalized in the  Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer , which was adopted and signed by 28 countries, on 22 March 1985. In September 1987, this led to the drafting of The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Montreal Protocol

The principal aim of the  Montreal Protoco l is to protect the ozone layer by taking measures to control total global production and consumption of substances that deplete it, with the ultimate objective of their elimination on the basis of developments in scientific knowledge and technological information. It is structured around several groups of ozone-depleting substances. The groups of chemicals are classified according to the chemical family and are listed in annexes to the Montreal Protocol text. The Protocol requires the control of nearly 100 chemicals, in several categories. For each group or annex of chemicals, the Treaty sets out a timetable for the phase-out of production and consumption of those substances, with the aim of eventually eliminating them completely.

The timetable set by the Protocol applies to consumption of ozone depleting substances. Consumption is defined as the quantities produced plus imported, less those quantities exported in any given year. There is also a deduction for verified destruction. Percentage reductions relate to the designated base-line year for the substance. The Protocol does not forbid the use of existing or recycled controlled substances beyond the phase-out dates.

There are a few exceptions for essential uses where no acceptable substitutes have been found, for example, in metered dose inhalers (MDI) commonly used to treat asthma and other respiratory problems or halon fire-suppression systems used in submarines and aircraft.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer ( resolution 49/114 ).

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol progressed well in developed and developing countries. All phase-out schedules were adhered to in most cases, some even ahead of schedule. Attention focused initially on chemicals with higher ozone-depletion potentials including CFCs and halons. The phase-out schedule for HCFCs was more relaxed due to their lower ozone-depletion potentials and because they have also been used as transitional substitutes for CFCs.

The HCFC phase-out schedule was introduced in 1992 for developed and developing countries, the latter with a freeze in 2015, and final phase-out by 2030 in developed countries and 2040 in developing countries. In 2007, Parties to the Montreal Protocol decided to accelerate the HCFC phase-out schedule for both developed and developing countries.

Universal ratification

On 16th September 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal ratification.

Kigali Amendment

The Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer reached agreement at their 28th Meeting of the Parties on 15 October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius is still possible if we immediately and drastically accelerate climate action. António Guterres

Speech on Ozone Day

Ozone Day is a special day dedicated to the protection of the earth’s ozone layer. It’s celebrated on September 16th every year.

You might wonder why we need to protect the ozone layer. It’s because it shields us from harmful sun rays that can cause skin cancer and other health problems.

1-minute Speech on Ozone Day

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning to all. The reason we gather here today is to raise awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and to commemorate World Ozone Day.

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Without the ozone layer, our planet would be exposed to harmful radiation, risking the survival of all life forms. However, due to human activities, this important layer is depleting, causing what we know as the ‘ozone hole’.

The main culprits are the Chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, found in many everyday appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners. These CFCs, when released into the atmosphere, gradually deplete the ozone layer, causing serious environmental concerns.

The good news is we are not too late. By making conscious decisions to reduce the use of products containing CFCs, we can help to restore the ozone layer. Governments around the world have taken steps by banning these harmful substances. Through the Montreal Protocol, nations have come together to phase out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.

Let us use this day to reflect on our actions and consider how we can contribute towards protecting the ozone layer. Let us choose to be part of the solution, and not the problem. Every small contribution, every small change can make a big difference.

So, this Ozone Day, let’s pledge to be more mindful of our actions and their impact on our environment, for the sake of our planet and future generations. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Ozone Day

Dear respected dignitaries, teachers, students and my dear friends, I feel honored to stand before you on this special day, known globally as World Ozone Day. This day of significance is not merely a day, but a reminder and a call to action to protect the Earth’s fragile ozone layer.

The ozone layer, as we all know, is an invisible shield that protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. However, human activities have caused immense damage to this protective shield, leading to the creation of a ‘hole’ in the ozone layer. It is alarming to know that despite being thousands of kilometers away, our actions can negatively impact something so far away.

The primary culprits causing this damage are man-made chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and other ozone-depleting substances. They are found in everyday items like air conditioners, refrigerators, and even aerosol propellants. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere, they destroy the ozone molecules, depleting the ozone layer.

On this note, World Ozone Day serves as a stark reminder of our responsibilities towards our planet. It is a day to reflect upon our actions and understand the dire consequences they bring. More importantly, it’s a day to strengthen our commitments to work collectively to protect the ozone layer.

We must remember that every small step matters. Reducing our dependency on products that emit harmful chemicals, promoting the use of ozone-friendly technologies, and raising awareness about this issue – all contribute to the larger cause. We can encourage our peers, our families, and our communities to make ozone-friendly choices.

In closing, I would like to highlight that the theme of this year’s Ozone day is, ‘Ozone for life: 35 years of ozone layer protection’. This theme encourages us to reflect on the progress we have made in the past decades and motivates us to continue these efforts in the future. It underlines the fact that if we could collectively achieve a significant reduction in ozone-depleting substances, we can certainly continue this momentum to completely phase out these harmful substances.

Remember, our actions today will determine the future of our planet. Let’s pledge to work together in protecting our ozone layer, not just for us, but for the generations to come. Ozone is not just a layer, but a protector of life. Let’s preserve it to save life on earth.

Thank you for your attention and I hope this World Ozone Day inspires us all to act for a better, healthier future!

Global cooperation to protect the ozone layer can ensure a better future for us all

Found high up in the atmosphere, the ozone layer shields earth from most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

As the Montreal Protocol to Protect the Ozone Layer turns 35 on Friday, World Ozone Day, the United Nations has said that continuing the level of cooperation that led to the treaty’s adoption and success is just what is needed to protect life on Earth, end the climate crisis and ensure a brighter future for us all.

Hailing the Montreal Protocol as the most successful environmental treaty ever, the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ) said the instrument’s adoption ended one of the biggest threats ever to face humanity as a whole: the depletion of the ozone layer.

“When the world found out that ozone-depleting gases used in aerosols and cooling were creating a hole in the sky, they came together,” the agency said in a press statement, adding: “They showed that multilateralism and effective global cooperation worked, and they phased out these gases. Now the ozone layer is healing, allowing it once again to shield humanity from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.”

Catastrophe averted

This action has protected millions of people from skin cancer and cataracts over the years since. It allowed vital ecosystems to survive and thrive. It safeguarded life on Earth. And it slowed climate change: if ozone-depleting chemicals had not been banned, we would be looking at a global temperature rise of an additional 2.5°C by the end of this century.

“This would have been a catastrophe,” said UNEP.

In his message on World Ozone Day , UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Protocol was a success because, when science discovered the threat we all faced, governments and their partners acted.

“The Montreal Protocol is a powerful example of multilateralism in action. With the many problems facing the world – from conflicts to growing poverty, deepening inequality and climate emergency – it is a reminder that we can succeed in working together for the common good,” said the UN chief.

The Protocol has much more to give

Mr. Guterres said that the Montreal Protocol has already contributed to tackling the climate crisis, and indeed, by protecting plants from ultraviolet radiation, allowing them to live and store carbon, it has avoided up to an extra 1 degree Celsius of global warming.

“The Protocol’s work to phase out climate-heating gases and improve energy efficiency through its Kigali Amendment can further slow climate disruption. But, only by mirroring the cooperation and speedy action of the Montreal Protocol elsewhere can we stop the carbon pollution that is dangerously heating our world. We have a choice: collective action or collective suicide,” he warned.

UNEP said that the Montreal Protocol has much more to give. Under the Kigali Amendment nations have committed to phase down hydrofluorocarbons – a move that could avoid up to 0.4°C of global temperature rise by the end of the century. The Protocol and its Amendment are helping the world adopt climate friendly and energy-efficient cooling technology.

What does this mean for humanity? UNEP said that as the international community continues to protect the ozone layer , the Protocol will continue to safeguard us and all life on Earth.

“It also means a cooler planet as more countries ratify the Amendment. It means more people being able to access vital cooling technology without further warming the planet. It also means the Protocol continuing to send a clear and lasting message: global cooperation to protect life on Earth is our best chance at a brighter future for everyone,” concluded UNEP.

Check out the best short World Ozone Day speech that would surely help you to prepare your best speech on World Ozone Day.

Good morning to everyone present.

I’m XYZ from ___Standard, and I’m here to give a World Ozone Day Speech.

This year’s theme is “A Healthy Atmosphere-the Future We Desire.” Since 1995, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer has been observed on September 16th. The United Nations General Assembly chose this date in its resolution to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987. The ozone layer is a natural part of our atmosphere. It acts as a sun screen by blocking the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Certain chemicals, such as CFCs, HCFCs, and halons, have been shown to deplete the ozone layer. These can cause holes to form in the layer and allow more UV rays to reach the earth’s surface. As a result of ozone depletion, the earth’s temperature will rise, glaciers will melt, cancerous diseases will spread, ocean levels will rise, and many other effects will occur.

Our Queen Azhi Jetsun Pema, Bhutan’s ozone diplomat, is still working hard to ensure that the ozone layer is well protected. As a result, in order to fulfil Her Majesty’s dream of protecting the ozone layer, there are numerous and simple ways in which we can save our ozone layer. Avoid purchasing and using CFC-containing aerosols and sprays. Avoid the use of ozone-depleting fire extinguishers. Choose a CFC-free refrigerator or air conditioner. Use alternative modes of transportation such as buses, bicycles, or simply walking or carpooling. Follow the 4Rs policy at home and school: reduce, reuse, refuse, and recycle. Purchase energy-saving devices and bulbs.

We can all do our part to protect the environment. Before we demand that politicians implement policies to protect the ozone layer, let us start doing something for the environment ourselves.

Finally, let us make the well-known phrase “Any long journey begins with a first step” a part of our daily lives as we work to create a sustainable planet.

Thank you for your time.

Ozone Day Speech in English 2023

The speech on Ozone Day in English is provided below.

Good morning, everyone, today on the occasion of World Ozone Day , I would like to pay my gratitude to my teachers, seniors, and friends who have given me a chance to present my views on this important topic. Do you know, why we celebrate ozone day on September 16 every year? What is the importance of this day? Well, the main purpose to celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. First, it is important to have an idea about what the ozone layer is and why it is so important for human life. The ozone layer or we can say ozone shield is a region of Earth’s stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a high amount of concentration of ozone (O 3 ) in other parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important to protect human life, as it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun. Without the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, life on Earth would be challenging. Plants cannot able to live and grow in heavy ultraviolet radiation, nor can the plankton serve as food for most of the ocean life. Because of the weakening of the Ozone Layer shield, humans would be more susceptible to skin cancer, cataracts, and impaired immune systems.

Check Teachers Day Speech Now! But there is an important point that we need to keep in mind. Ozone can both protect and harm the Earth, it all depends on where it resides. For example, if the Ozone layer is present in the stratosphere of the atmosphere, it will act as a shield. However, if it is present in the troposphere (about 10 km from the Earth’s surface), Ozone is harmful. In the troposphere, it is a pollutant that can cause damage to lung tissues and plants. Hence, it has upset the ozone balance and can have serious consequences. Most of the ozone stays within the stratosphere whereby it acts as a shield and protects the surface of the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun. To protect the ozone layer, in 1994, the UN General Assembly signed 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed which is an international agreement used to protect the ozone layer. It was designed to stop the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and to reduce their concentration in the atmosphere to help protect the earth’s ozone layer.

Check World Literacy Day Speech Now! The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful environment protection agreement made in 1987. It sets out to be an obligatory timetable for the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances. This timetable has been reviewed regularly, with phase-out dates accelerated by scientific understanding. The government of each country is taking necessary steps to protect the ozone layer, but did you know that there are several different things that we can also do to protect the ozone layer? Like, such as minimizing the use of vehicles. You can also avoid the use of some cleaning items that are harmful to us and to the environment at the same time. A lot of people do not realize that many cleaning products on the market today contain substances that are corrosive and solvents too, and these dangerous substances can be replaced with products that are not toxic to the environment, such as bicarbonate or vinegar. There are several other things that we can do to protect the ozone layer.

Check Engineers Day Speech Now! Now, what we can do as responsible citizen is to make people aware of this serious topic. We should share these with our friends, family members, and followers. This is something good and inspiring, that we should do, you may think that one person cannot make a difference, but they can. If one person does something, and then another, and so on, it will all add together to make a big change. Thank You!

World Ozone Day – September 16, 2024

World Ozone Day, observed every year on September 16, is also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, commemorating the date in 1987 when nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The need to declare an action to preserve the ozone layer came as a result of the outset of its depletion. In 2017, 30 years after the Montreal Protocol, the closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed and the effects of this have been projected to last up to 100 years.

History of World Ozone Day

The ozone layer is a region of the earth’s stratosphere absorbing most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a higher concentration of ozone than other parts of the atmosphere, though compared to other gasses in the stratosphere, it is rather small. It is mainly found in the lower portion of the stratosphere, from about 10 to 22 miles above the earth, varying according to geography and seasons.

French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson discovered the ozone layer in 1913. Measurements of the sun had shown that the radiation released from its surface to the ground on earth is usually consistent with a spectrum of a black body having extreme high temperatures, but there was no radiation below a wavelength measuring about 310 nanometers at the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. This led the scientists to deduce that the missing radiation at the ultraviolet end of the spectrum was being absorbed by something in the atmosphere. Upon several scientific tests, the spectrum of the missing radiation was eventually matched to just one known chemical, which was ozone.

The properties of this chemical were explored extensively by British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer with which stratospheric ozone from the ground could be measured. The photochemical mechanisms from which the ozone layer is formed were discovered by the British physicist Sydney Chapman in 1930. The ozone in the earth’s stratosphere comes about as a result of ultraviolet light striking ordinary oxygen molecules with two oxygen atoms, thereby splitting them into individual oxygen atoms after which the atomic oxygen then combines with unbroken Oxygen.

World Ozone Day or International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer is observed on September 16 every year. The motto behind its observation is spreading awareness among people about  Ozone Layer depletion and searching for possible solutions to preserve it.

This article will give relevant details on the International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer within the context of the IAS exam .

Aspirants can check out the following relevant links to assist their preparation –

International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer

  • In December, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly- UNGA proclaimed September 16 as World Ozone Day.
  • According to the UN, the Montreal Protocol has led to the phase-out of 99% of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators, air-conditioners and many other products.
  • Ozone layer protection efforts have also contributed to the fight against climate change by averting an estimated 135 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, from 1990 to 2010.
  • Part of the ozone layer has recovered at a rate of 1-3% per decade since 2000, and it is expected to return to pre-1980 levels by 2050.

World Ozone Day 2020

  • The slogan of World Ozone Day 2020 was ‘Ozone for life’. The slogan reminds that ozone is crucial for life on Earth and the world must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations also.
  • In 2020, World Ozone Day celebrated 35 years of ozone layer protection. It marks 35 years of the Vienna Convention.

Global Conventions to Protect Ozone Layers

  • It prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer.
  • The Vienna Convention provided the framework necessary to create regulatory measures in the form of the Montreal Protocol.
  • Its purpose is to regulate the production, consumption, and emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs).
  • The parties to the Protocol meet once a year to make decisions aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the agreement. These include adjusting or amending the Protocol, which has been done six times since its creation.
  • The most recent amendment, the Kigali Amendment, called for the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in 2016.
  • According to the amendment, the signing countries are expected to decrease the manufacture and usage of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by about 80-85% from their baselines until 2045.
  • This will curb global warming (by arresting global average temperature rise to 0.5 degrees Celsius) by the year 2100.

Ref : Oz.Sec./World Ozone Day 2023                                                                    Date : 23 May 2023

Dear Parties to the Montreal Protocol and other Stakeholders,

I am pleased to confirm the theme for this year’s World Ozone Day on 16 September.  It is:

Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change

This year’s theme aims to highlight and reiterate the positive impact of the Montreal Protocol on ozone layer recovery and reducing climate change, especially through the Kigali Amendment, which phases down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a group of strong greenhouse gases.

With universal ratification and full implementation of the Kigali Amendment, the avoided warming by 2100 is estimated to be up to 0.5º C. Combined with energy efficiency measures while phasing down HFCs, these gains could potentially double.

Our planet is heating up. Average temperatures are soaring and with it the demand for cooling. This could also increase the amount of HFCs being used and emitted. Universal ratification and implementation of the Amendment to phase down HFCs from cooling systems and make them more sustainable is a critical climate warming mitigation tool.

With the theme visualized in the posters, we are inviting all parties to join the celebration of World Ozone Day and use the assets created to raise awareness among the public on the important work of the Montreal Protocol to safeguard us and the planet.

As always, the World Ozone Day theme and taglines are available in all the six official UN languages on the WOD 2023 website .

To further support your World Ozone Day communication activities, the Secretariat will also develop a comprehensive social media pack in all the six official UN languages along with additional materials such as the video message from UNEP’s Executive Director, which will be made available for further dissemination nearer to World Ozone Day 2023 here .

As you prepare for your events, we would also be pleased to receive any information on your planned commemoration of World Ozone Day 2023 to be featured on our website and social media channels ( Instagram , Twitter , Facebook and LinkedIn )

As in-person events again are the norm, the Secretariat is pleased to provide limited financial assistance to selected developing countries to contribute towards organizing their national activities to commemorate the day. The Secretariat invites interested parties to submit their plans of celebration activities, including a planned budget, and requests for assistance by  Friday, 30 June 2023 . Kindly send them to the Secretariat at [email protected] with a copy to [email protected]

As in previous years, the United Nations Secretary-General’s message for World Ozone Day will be shared prior to the day.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact the Secretariat for any clarification or further information you may require at [email protected] or [email protected]

Yours sincerely

Everything You Need to Know About Earth Day 2024

By Emily Chan

As the climate crisis becomes ever more serious, each Earth Day that comes along takes on extra significance. Established in 1970 in the US, the annual event brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.

Earth Day 2024 comes as a worrying new report found that global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—the top three heat-trapping gases—reached a record high again in 2023. Meanwhile, a separate study found that Antarctica saw an astonishing rise of 38.5 degrees Celsius above its average seasonal temperature back in 2022, leading to major concerns about the alarming rate at which global warming is affecting our planet.

That’s why it’s more important than ever that Earth Day is seen as a rallying cry for real action on the climate crisis. Want to ensure that you play your part? Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Earth Day?

Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.

When is Earth Day 2024?

Earth Day takes place on April 22 every year, but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month)—and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week)—is a time when environmental issues take center stage.

Why is Earth Day on April 22?

Earth Day was the brainchild of US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson, following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California . He came up with the idea of having college teach-ins to highlight the importance of clean air and water, with April 22 chosen as a convenient date between Spring Break and finals.

Organizers decided to name the date Earth Day , with the first event in 1970 leading to an astonishing 20 million people across the US taking to the streets—around 10 percent of the country’s population at the time. The event undoubtedly had a major impact, with President Richard Nixon creating the Environmental Protection Agency just months later in December 1970, as well as signing the Clean Air Act.

Earth Day later became an international campaign in 1990, when environmental activists asked one of the original organizers, Denis Hayes , to help create another event to spotlight the ecological challenges facing our planet.

What is the Earth Day 2024 theme?

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet v Plastics , highlighting the fact that 380 million tonnes of plastic are now produced every year—while only 9 percent of plastic ever produced has been recycled. Campaigners are now calling for a 60 percent reduction in plastic by 2040. “The Planet v Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet,” Kathleen Rogers, president of Earthday.org, explains.

How can you celebrate Earth Day?

There are thousands of events taking place around the world this Earth Day. You can find out what’s happening near you via this map , or even create your own event. Organizers have put together a number of ideas for celebrating Earth Day via its handy action tool kit , from avoiding single-use plastic to taking part in The Great Global Cleanup campaign. Other suggestions include signing the Global Plastics Treaty petition and saying no to fast fashion, the majority of which is made from plastic.

What else can you do to help the planet?

Of course, at Vogue we believe that every day should be Earth Day, so it’s vital that we continue to take action throughout the whole year. If you want to find out more about the challenges we’re facing, here are the books to read , the documentaries to watch, and the activists to follow .
