السلام علیکم حاضرینِ محفل!! میرا آج کا عنوان بہت خاص ہے۔ آج میری تقریر کا موضوع اساتذہ کا عالمی دن ہے۔

پانچ اکتوبر کو منایا جانے والا یہ دن ہمیں اساتذہ کی اہمیت کے بارے میں بتاتا ہے۔ جب بےشمار طلباء اپنے اساتذہ کو کارڈز اور تحائف پیش کرتے ہیں۔ کہتے ہیں کہ استاد روحانی باپ ہوتا ہے اور یہ پیشہ اپنانا دراصل سنتِ بنویﷺ کی پیروی کے مترادف ہے کیونکہ ہمارے نبی کا فرمان ہے :        “اور میں معلم بنا کر بھیجا گیا ہوں”

عزیز سامعین!! اساتذہ کے لیے ایک دن مختص نہیں کرنا چاہیے بلکہ سارا سال اور پوری زندگی ان کی خدمت اور عزت کرنی چاہیے۔ اساتذہ کی نصیحتیں اکثر ہمیں  غیر اہم لگتی ہیں لیکن وقت کے ساتھ ہی ان نصیحتوں کا اندازہ بھی انسان کو ہوتا ہے۔

پیارے لوگو!! دنیا میں بہت کم لوگ دوسروں کو خود سے آگے نکلتا دیکھنے کی خواہش رکھتے ہیں۔ ان میں سرِ فہرست تو  ہمارے والدین ہوتے ہیں اور دوسرے ہمارے اساتذہ جو چاہتے ہیں کہ ان کے طلباء ان سے بھی زیادہ کامیاب ہوں۔ وہ لوگ اپنے طلباء کی کامیابی کو ہی اپنی کامیابی سمجھتے ہیں۔

حضرت علیؓ نے فرمایا :   “جس نے مجھے ایک لفظ بھی سکھادیا میں اس کا غلام ہوں۔” اس سے ہمیں اساتذہ کی اہمیت کا اندازہ ہوتا ہے۔ حضرت علیؓ نے چھ چیزوں کی شکایت کرنے سے منع فرمایا جن میں سے ایک شکایت اساتذہ کی شکایت ہے۔

اکثر دیکھا جاتا ہے کہ استاد کی ذرا سی ڈانٹ پر بچے کے والدین استاد جو گھبردار کرنے پہنچ جاتے ہیں حالانکہ یہ غلط ہے۔ ہمارے والدین ہمیں اس دنیا میں لاتے ہیں اور ہمارے استاد ہمیں جینا سکھاتے ہیں۔ ہماری جسمانی پرورش اگر ہمارے والدین کرتے ہیں تو ہماری روحانی پرورش کرنے کا ذمہ ہمارے اساتذہ اپنے سر لیتے ہیں۔

ایک مشہور واقعہ ہے کہ انگریز قوم نے علامہ اقبال کو سر کا خطاب دینا چاہا تو انھوں نے انکار کردیا اور خطاب قبول کرنے کی یہ شرط ظاہر کی کہ ان کے استاد کو بھی خطاب سے نوازا جائے۔ اس واقعے سے ہمیں اساتذہ کی اہمیت کا اندازہ ہوتا ہے۔

کسی ملک میں وکیل ، ڈاکٹرز ، انجنئیرز نے احتجاج کر کے مطالبہ کیا کہ ہماری تنخواہیں اساتذہ کی تنخواہوں کے کم کیوں ہیں تو ایک بہت خوبصورت جواب دیا گیا کہ : “تمھیں ان اساتذہ جتنی تنخواہیں کیسے دی جاسکتی ہیں جن سے پڑھ کر تم اس مقام پر پہنچے ہو۔”

کہا جاتا ہے کہ بہت سے ممالک میں استاد کہیں پڑھانے جارہا ہو تو سب اسے راستہ دیتے ہیں کہ پہلے آپ گزر جائیں۔ افسوس کے ساتھ وطنِ عزیز میں والدین ہی کے ساتھ حسنِ سلوک نہیں کیا جاتا تو اساتذہ کے ساتھ اچھا برتاؤ کیسے کیاجاسکتا ہے۔ اب استاد بھی اپنی اس خدمت کو پیسوں میں تولنے لگے ہیں لیکن اب بھی ایسے ایماندار اساتذہ و طلبہ موجود ہیں جو پوری لگن سے اپنے فرائض سرانجام دیتے ہیں اور  بیشک وہی لوگ کامیابی کی منزلیں بھی طے کرتے ہیں۔

ہمیں چاہیے پورا سال یا کم از کم اساتذہ کے عالمی دن اپنے اپنے اساتذہ کو خاص محسوس کروائیں۔ اللہ ہم سب کا حامی و ناصر ہو۔ شکریہ۔

On April 12, Sanborn Library hosted a Q&A with three professional translators: Czech specialist Alex Zucker, Hindu and Urdu specialist Daisy Rockwell and Italian and German specialist Alta Price.

The event, dubbed "The Bridge," was catered by the Nest Café and co-sponsored by the Comparative Literature Program, the English and Creative Writing Department, the Leslie Center for the Humanities and the Office of the Associate Dean for Interdisciplinary Programs. French and Italian Department chair Andrea Tarnowski organized the event, which drew around 40 students from across the College's humanities departments.

"Planning this event has really been an education, finding out the sources for who translates what languages, what the signs of successful translation are," Tarnowski said. 

Zucker reflected on the powerful calling he felt to become a translator, explaining that he and his fellow translators had felt an "innate responsibility" to share certain non-English texts with the English-speaking world.

"Translation is … how we can understand people from across the world who are always to some degree different from us, yet also inextricably linked to us," Tarnowski said. "It's another individual, another representative of another group. You have to do a form of translation to understand that individual [and] understand their experience." 

During the panel, one student said learning a language can be like "building a lego" — as one learns language by building a cohesive structure of meaning. Yilu Ren GR , who is studying comparative literature, said she appreciated this metaphor.

"As a Chinese drill instructor, I use the lego metaphor to show students how the Chinese characters are combined into one Chinese word as the infrastructure of Chinese vocabulary, which is vastly different from the English vocabulary," Ren said. "You're putting pieces together, but it's an organic new entity which we're making from the pieces." 

Ren — who hopes to pursue a career in translation after graduating this June — asked whether the "top experts in the field" are willing to teach prospective translators the art of translation. 

"Absolutely, I would love to lecture at a university about … the art of translation, but it's just not a luxury that I particularly have or anticipate having, at least in the coming year or two," Zucker responded.  

According to the Dartmouth English department website, the event was held in honor of English professor Monika Otter , who died on May 5, 2023. Otter, whose scholarship focused on the use of language, worked in Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Provençal, Spanish and medieval Welsh.

A UC Berkeley law professor confronts a pro-Palestinian student during a backyard dinner

A dinner for graduating law students at the University of California, Berkeley, has become the latest flashpoint over free speech and concerns about Islamophobia and antisemitism on college campuses as the war in Gaza rages on. 

Video shot by a law student and shared with NBC News shows law professor Catherine Fisk trying to grab a microphone out of the hands of a Palestinian student during a protest at an invitation-only event this week.

Fisk and her spouse, law school dean Erwin Chemerinsky, hosted the event at a dinner in their home’s backyard Tuesday.

Malak Afaneh was one of 60 students invited to what was supposed to be a quiet evening before graduation next month. But it took a turn when Afaneh stood up and started delivering an unsanctioned speech through a cordless microphone she had brought with her.

“Peace and blessings upon you all,” she began. “Tonight we are gathered here in the name of commemorating our final few weeks as law students.”

The video shows Chemerinsky immediately interjecting and asking Afaneh to leave.

“Please leave. No. Please leave. Please leave,” he says.

Afaneh continues, and Fisk walks down the steps toward her. Fisk puts an arm around Afaneh’s shoulder and grabs the microphone with her other hand. The two appear to briefly jostle for the microphone before Fisk releases her grip.

Afaneh, the leader of Berkeley Law Students for Justice in Palestine, and a group of nine other protesters eventually left. She said the interaction was an “assault” and discrimination against Palestinian students. She did not file a police report, she said, because she is considering all her legal options.

“It was clear Islamophobia,” she said Thursday. “Assault is assault. No way should a law professor have put their hands on a student, period.”

Chemerinsky, who is Jewish, called the disruption “ugly and divisive.”

“I am enormously sad that we have students who are so rude as to come into my home, in my backyard, and use this social occasion for their political agenda,” he said in a statement.

At the end of a different video, Fisk says, “We agree with you about what’s going on in Palestine.”

Fisk did not respond to a request for comment.

Asked whether legal or disciplinary action would be taken against Afaneh, Chemerinsky or Fisk, Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for the university, said he could not comment on matters pertaining to students and personnel.

In an emailed statement, university Chancellor Carol Christ said she has been in touch with Chemerinsky to offer her “support and sympathy.”

“I am appalled and deeply disturbed by what occurred at Dean Chemerinsky’s home last night,” the statement read in part. “While our support for Free Speech is unwavering, we cannot condone using a social occasion at a person’s private residence as a platform for protest.”

Afaneh said the chancellor has not contacted her.

Afaneh, a law clerk at the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Bay Area office, had encouraged students to boycott the dinner because the university has investments in companies with ties to Israel.

Chemerinsky said in his statement that students had circulated a poster on campus and social media with a caricature of him holding a bloody knife and fork, with the words “No dinner with Zionist Chem while Gaza starves.”

“I never thought I would see such blatant antisemitism, with an image that invokes the horrible antisemitic trope of blood libel and that attacks me for no apparent reason other than I am Jewish,” he said.

Afaneh said the boycott targeted Chemerinsky because he is a representative of the university and has influence with school officials.

She and the nine other students agreed about two weeks ago to disrupt the dinner by giving a speech and then walking out, Afaneh said. They consulted attorneys beforehand to understand their free speech rights and what legal fallout they could expect, she said.

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a watchdog group, said on X : “Peaceful protest on public campuses is protected speech. Disruptive protest and trespassing on private property is not. 

“The First Amendment doesn’t protect seriously disrupting events on public college campuses, much less at someone’s backyard dinner party.”

The UC Berkeley School of Law said in a statement Thursday that it paid for the dinner at the private residence, “as it does for all the student dinners.”

“There is not a First Amendment right to use private property for speech,” it said. “Even if the event had been held on the legal equivalent of government property, it still would be what is known as a ‘limited public forum,’ where there are allowable limits on who can attend the event, and what can be expressed.

“The source of funding for the event has no bearing on either,” it said.

UC Berkeley, the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s, adopted guidelines in 1966 to help students and administrators navigate First Amendment issues, which included creating “time, place and manner” policies.

Some students have recently been ignoring the guidelines, insisting they are being used as a tool to suppress their free speech, said law student Maryam Alhakim, a protester who attended the dinner.

“It’s being used against us in a way to curtail our activism,” Alhakim said.

Zahra Billoo, executive director of CAIR Bay Area, said she was more concerned about how a student was treated by a faculty member.

“It says something deeper about the racist way in which they perceive Palestinian students and those who stand in solidarity with them,” she said. “How would it have hurt for her to have made her speech?”

The confrontation is the latest in a spate of heated exchanges on college campuses across the county since the Israel-Hamas war started on Oct. 7.

UC Berkeley graduate students have spent months protesting beneath the school’s iconic Sather Gate, sometimes clashing with pro-Israel student groups. In February, a protest turned violent at an event featuring a former member of the Israeli army.

Last Friday, 20 students at Pomona College in Southern California were arrested after they stormed and occupied the college president’s office.

Several students were suspended from Columbia University in New York this month after they hosted an unsanctioned event on campus featuring a speaker linked to a terrorist organization.

Oscar Alejandro Pérez , a popular Venezuelan YouTuber who uploads travel videos, was arrested on terrorism charges on Sunday, March 31.

Pérez was detained, and subsequently held for 32 hours, over a video he uploaded in 2023. In the video, he points to the Credicard Tower, a building in Caracas that hosts the servers that facilitate the country’s financial transactions, and jokingly adds: “If a bomb were to be thrown at that building, the whole national banking system would collapse.” He was accused of urging people to blow up the building, something Pérez denies .

His arrest is the latest evidence of President Nicolás Maduro’s growing crackdown on human rights and civil liberties as the country prepares for presidential elections in July.

Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez, was a hugely popular president. While in office, he led a social and political movement called the “Bolivarian Revolution” , which aimed to address social, economic and political inequalities through a series of progressive reforms funded by Venezuela’s vast oil wealth.

Then, in 2013, Chávez died and Maduro (who was then vice president) came to power after narrowly winning a special election. Initially, Maduro enjoyed the sympathy and support of many Venezuelans loyal to Chávez and his socialist ideals.

But since taking office Maduro has presided over a series of economic crises . Hyperinflation, shortages of basic goods, and a deep recession have all made him increasingly unpopular. And Venezuela’s economy has contracted by about 70% under Maduro’s leadership.

Consolidating power

The last time Venezuelans went to the polls was in 2018. The contest was so rigged that many neighbouring countries branded the election illegitimate. Two of the most popular opposition candidates were disqualified or barred from running, and Maduro won the contest amid claims of vote rigging and other irregularities.

Many Venezuelans have grown disillusioned with Maduro and have taken to the streets to vent their anger. But widespread discontent and protests have only fed more insecurity, criminality, poverty and social unrest.

Now lacking support from within the Chavista political movement and the Venezuelan military, Maduro has turned to criminal groups to promote a state where illegal armed groups act at the service of the government.

Maduro has consolidated power by using state institutions to silence critics, while at the same time engaging in human rights abuses and profiting from corruption. He has been accused of committing crimes against humanity, including torture, kidnapping and extrajudicial killings. And according to Amnesty International, between 240 and 310 people remain arbitrarily detained on political grounds.

Unsurprisingly, around 7.7 million Venezuelans have fled repression and economic hardship at home. Roughly 3 million of those displaced have started a new life in Colombia, 1.5 million of them have migrated to Peru, while others have made their way north to the US.

The Venezuelan migrant crisis has become the largest in the world, with the number of displaced people exceeding that seen in Ukraine and Syria.

Silencing dissent

Venezuelans will head to the polls on July 28. The arrest of Pérez is part of a wider strategy aimed at silencing dissent and strengthening the regime’s hold over its people as Maduro seeks re-election.

On February 9, a prominent lawyer and military expert Rocío San Miguel was arrested in Caracas before several members of her family disappeared . San Miguel is known for her work exposing corruption in the Venezuelan army. She appeared at a hearing four days later accused of “treason, conspiracy and terrorism” for her purported role in an alleged plot to assassinate Maduro.

Her arrest set off a wave of criticism both inside and outside Venezuela, including from the UN Human Rights Council. Its office in Caracas was subsequently ordered to stop operations on the grounds that it promoted opposition to the country and staff were told to leave the country within 72 hours. It is unclear whether San Miguel remains in jail.

In March, Ronald Ojeda, a 32-year-old former lieutenant in Venezuela’s military, was found dead in Chile ten days after he had gone missing. He had protested against the Maduro government on social media wearing a T-shirt with “freedom” written on the collar and prison bars drawn on the map of Venezuela.

His body was found in a suitcase beneath a metre of concrete. Chilean prosecutors later announced that his abduction and killing was the work of El Tren de Aragua, one of Venezuela’s most powerful criminal organisations.

Don’t bank on free and fair elections

The crackdown on civic society poses a dilemma for the Biden administration. In October 2023, Maduro secured a partial lifting of US economic sanctions (which have been in place since 2019) in return for a commitment to holding “free and fair” presidential elections, in addition to political reforms and the release of political prisoners.

But that deal is quickly unwinding. In January, the leader of the opposition and a clear favourite in the polls, María Corina Machada was banned from holding office for 15 years. The Biden administration has since reimposed some sanctions and has threatened new ones on Venezuela’s vital oil sector if political reforms are not made.

Venezuela has become a deeply corrupt, authoritarian and criminal state that shuts down dissent, forces millions of its own people to flee, and kills or abducts whoever threatens the regime. Its occasional displays of reason are motivated purely by economic gain.

In many ways, Maduro’s political repression reflects his growing fear that his regime’s days are numbered, driving him to desperate measures to force a different fate. Once a dictator takes hold, it becomes very difficult to dislodge them.
