Supreme hero Sai Dharam Tej is back with a mystical thriller, Virupaksha, to entertain the audience. The movie, directed by Karthik Dandu, has Samyukta Menon as the female lead. Amidst good buzz, the film has hit the screens today, and let’s see how it is.

Set in the backdrop of the 1990s, the story takes place in a village named Rudravanam. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), along with his mother, visit their village after a long time. He instantly falls in love with Nandini (Samyukta Menon), a village belle and daughter of Rudravanam’s sarpanch. Suddenly a series of mysterious events happen in the village, and people keep dying one after the other. What’s actually happening in Rudravanam? What’s the reason behind the continuous deaths? How did Surya unravel the mystery? The movie has the answers.

Plus Points:

The first half is mostly racy except for the romantic track. The movie begins on an interesting note as the director wastes no time in setting up the plot. One would get involved in the proceedings right from the very first frame. Sukumar shows his brilliance with the screenplay in the first hour. The amount of effort put in by the production design team to take us into the world of Rudravanam is brilliant.

The sound effects in Virupaksha are scintillating and are sure to send chills down the spine. Not one, but there are many sequences in the film that are brilliantly executed with the help of these sound effects. The first half will thrill and scare the viewers at the same time. The makers made sure not to miss out even on the minute detailing and thus enhances the viewing experience.

Sai Dharam Tej sheds his mass image and plays his part neatly. He, as a person who tries to unravel the mystery in the village, did a fair job. The mega actor has shown a lot of maturity in his performance and did what exactly the script demands from him.

Samyukta Menon gets a meaty role, and she did a spectacular job as well. Samyukta played the village girl role with utmost conviction, and the film has ample scope for the actress to display her acting prowess. The gorgeous beauty grabbed the opportunity with both hands and gave it her all.

The writing is trenchant in most places, and the terrific background score elevates the proceedings superbly. The characterizations are strongly written, and even those who appear for a brief time will drive the story forward. Ajay, Sai Chand, Shymala, Soniya Singh, and Brahmaji did their roles well.

Minus Points:

After a very good first half, one would obviously expect the second half to have the same momentum, but this part disappoints slightly. Though it has a couple of well-executed twists, the pacing dips, weakening the impact. The climax also could have been a bit better.

The romantic track in the initial parts of the movie is a bit boring. The scenes that come in this regard could have been written better. The routine nature of the love track and the song here come as a speed breaker for the film’s flow. The movie is not for the faint-hearted, as it has gore sequences.

Technical Aspects:

Virupaksha is one of the well-crafted movies technically. The background score by Ajaneesh Loknath is top-notch, and it keeps one haunted till the end. It won’t be an overstatement to say that Ajaneesh Loknath is the second hero of Virupaksha. Kudos to the team for such exhilarating sound effects, which were made an integral part of the story. The cinematography by Shamdat is fantastic and gives the required depth. The production values are excellent. The editing could have been slightly better.

Coming to the director, Karthik Dandu, he has done a good job with the movie. The way he penned the story and the amount of depth in his writing is awesome. He made fantabulous use of technical values to present his story effectively on the screen. Sukumar’s association with the film is the icing on the cake. However the second half and climax were not that great.

On the whole, Virupaksha is an engaging mystical thriller that is high on technical values. A good storyline, commendable performances by the actors, pulse-pounding sound effects, and neat direction are its trump cards. Barring the slightly slow second half, this movie very much deserves a theatrical experience for its incredible technical values. Recommended.

తెలుగులో రూపుదిద్దుకున్న మ‌రో పాన్ ఇండియా సినిమాగా విడుద‌ల‌కి ముందే ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించిన చిత్రం.. ‘విరూపాక్ష‌’ (Virupaksha). అన్ని భాష‌ల్లోనూ ఒకేసారి విడుద‌ల కాక‌పోయినా.. మంచి ప్ర‌చారాన్ని మాత్రం సొంతం చేసుకొంది. సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్ (Saidharam Tej) ప్ర‌మాదం నుంచి కోలుకున్నాక చేసిన సినిమా ఇది. అగ్ర ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే స‌మ‌కూర్చగా.. ఆయ‌న శిష్యుడు కార్తీక్ వ‌ర్మ దీన్ని తెర‌కెక్కించారు. ప్ర‌చార చిత్రాల‌తో ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో తెలుసుకునే ముందు క‌థేమిటో చూద్దాం (Virupaksha Review).

క‌థేంటంటే: రుద్ర‌వ‌నం అనే ఊరి చుట్టూ సాగే క‌థ ఇది. చేత‌బ‌డి చేస్తూ చిన్న పిల్ల‌ల మ‌ర‌ణానికి కార‌ణ‌మ‌వుతున్నారంటూ ఆ ఊరికి వ‌చ్చిన ఓ జంట‌ని స‌జీవ ద‌హ‌నం చేస్తారు గ్రామ‌స్థులు. వారు మంట‌ల్లో కాలిపోతూ పుష్క‌ర కాలం త‌ర్వాత ఈ ఊరు వ‌ల్ల‌కాడు అయిపోతుంద‌ని శపిస్తారు. అందుకు త‌గ్గ‌ట్టే స‌రిగ్గా ప‌న్నెండేళ్ల త‌ర్వాత ఆ ఊళ్లో వ‌రుసగా మ‌ర‌ణాలు సంభ‌విస్తాయి. దాంతో గ్రామాన్ని అష్ట‌దిగ్బంధ‌నం చేయాల‌ని తీర్మానిస్తారు పెద్ద‌లు. కొన్ని రోజుల‌పాటు అక్కడి జ‌నాలు బ‌య‌టికి వెళ్ల‌డానికి కానీ.. కొత్త‌వాళ్లు ఊళ్లోకి రావ‌డానికి కానీ అవ‌కాశం లేకుండా చేస్తారు. అయినా స‌రే మ‌ర‌ణాలు మాత్రం ఆగ‌వు. త‌న త‌ల్లితో క‌లిసి బంధువుల ఇంటికి వ‌చ్చిన సూర్య (సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్‌) (Saidharam Tej) తిరిగి వెళ్లే అవ‌కాశం ఉన్నా.. తాను మ‌న‌సుప‌డిన నందిని (సంయుక్త‌) (Samyuktha) ప్రాణాల్ని కాపాడ‌టం కోసం మ‌ళ్లీ ఊళ్లోకి తిరిగొస్తాడు. ఈ చావుల వెన‌కున్న ర‌హ‌స్యాల్ని ఛేదించ‌డానికి న‌డుం బిగిస్తాడు. మ‌రి సూర్య త‌ను అనుకున్నది చేశాడా? ఈ వ‌రుస చావుల వెన‌క ఎవ‌రున్నార‌నేది మిగ‌తా క‌థ. ఎలా ఉందంటే: 1979లో మొద‌లై 90 ద‌శ‌కం నేప‌థ్యంలో సాగే క‌థ ఇది. మిస్టిక్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌గా ప్ర‌చార‌మైన ఈ సినిమా.. తాంత్రిక శ‌క్తులు, ఆత్మ‌లు అంటూ చాలాచోట్ల భ‌య‌పెడుతూనే థ్రిల్‌కి గురిచేస్తుంది. ఊరి శివార్లలో పాడుబ‌డిన ఓ ఇల్లు.. అక్క‌డ దాగిన ర‌హ‌స్యం అంటూ ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు స‌గ‌టు థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ సినిమాల‌కి త‌గిన సెటప్‌నే ఎంచుకున్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ  గత చిత్రాల‌కి భిన్నంగా ఓ కొత్త నేప‌థ్యంతో కూడిన క‌థ‌ని రాసుకున్నాడు. ఆ క‌థ‌కి అంతే బ‌ల‌మైన స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే తోడ‌వడంతో సినిమా అడుగ‌డుగునా ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తూ సాగుతుంది. దంప‌తుల తాంత్రిక పూజ‌ల‌తో క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. క‌థానాయ‌కుడు రుద్ర‌వ‌నంలోకి అడుగుపెట్ట‌డం నుంచి ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌తో సినిమా మొద‌లైనా.. ఎవ‌రూ ఊహించ‌ని రీతిలో మ‌ర‌ణాల నుంచే ఆస‌క్తి మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ప్ర‌తి మ‌ర‌ణం వెన‌క ఓ అంతుచిక్క‌ని కార‌ణం. ఆ మ‌ర‌ణాలు సంభ‌వించే విధానం కూడా ప్రేక్షకుల్ని ఉత్కంఠకు గురిచేస్తాయి. అస‌లు ఎవ‌రు కార‌ణ‌మో తెలుసుకోవాల‌నే ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు స‌ఫ‌ల‌మ‌య్యాడు. రైల్వే స్టేష‌న్ ద‌గ్గ‌ర స‌న్నివేశాలు, క‌థానాయ‌కుడి సోద‌రి ఆత్మ‌హ‌త్య నేప‌థ్యంలోని స‌న్నివేశాల్ని డిజైన్ చేసిన విధానం చాలా బాగుంది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధం వర‌కూ వ‌రుస‌గా నాలుగు మ‌ర‌ణాలు చోటు చేసుకోవ‌డం.. సినిమాలో కీలక‌మైన మ‌రో పాత్ర మ‌ర‌ణం నేప‌థ్యంతో విరామ స‌న్నివేశాల్ని తీర్చిదిద్దారు. ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే అస‌లు క‌థంతా. నాయ‌కానాయిక‌ల పాత్ర‌లకి కూడా ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే ప్రాధాన్యం ల‌భించింది. ర‌హ‌స్యాన్ని ఛేదించే క్ర‌మంలో కథానాయకుడికి అడుగ‌డుగునా స‌వాళ్లు ఎదుర‌వుతుంటాయి. వాటిని అధిగ‌మిస్తూ ముందుకెళ్లే క్ర‌మంలో ర‌హ‌స్యాలు ఒకొక్క‌టిగా వెలుగులోకి రావ‌డంతో సినిమా ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా సాగుతుంది. భైర‌వ ఎక్క‌డున్నాడో క‌నిపెట్టే క్ర‌మం.. అస‌లు ఊరి జ‌నాల ప్రాణాల‌న్నీ ఎవ‌రి గుప్పిట్లో ఉన్నాయో తెలియ‌డం వంటి స‌న్నివేశాలు సినిమాకి కీల‌కం. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడికి సాంకేతిక బృందాలు చ‌క్కటి స‌హ‌కారం అందించాయి. అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా సాగ‌దీత‌గా అనిపించినా మొత్తంగా సినిమా ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌కి ఓ మంచి థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌ని చూసిన అనుభూతి క‌లుగుతుంది. ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్ క‌నిపించిన విధానం బాగుంది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధంతో పోలిస్తే ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే ఆయ‌న పాత్ర‌కి ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. వీరోచిత విన్యాసాలు చేయ‌క‌పోయినా.. ర‌హ‌స్యాన్ని ఛేదించేందుకు ధైర్యంగా ముందుకెళ్లే యువ‌కుడిగా చ‌క్క‌టి అభిన‌యం ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శించాడు. ఆయ‌న పాత్ర‌, న‌ట‌న‌లో సహ‌జ‌త్వం క‌నిపిస్తుంది. యాక్ష‌న్ స‌న్నివేశాల్లోనూ ఆయ‌న ప‌నితీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. సంయుక్త న‌ట‌న‌లో మ‌రో కోణాన్ని ఆవిష్క‌రించే చిత్ర‌మిది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధంలో ఎంత అందంగా క‌నిపిస్తుందో.. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో అంత‌గా థ్రిల్‌కి గురిచేస్తుంది. ప్రతి దశలో ఓ కొత్త పాత్ర క‌థ‌లోకి వ‌స్తూ ప్ర‌భావం చూపించ‌డం ఈ సినిమా ప్ర‌త్యేక‌త‌. అజ‌య్‌, రాజీవ్ క‌న‌కాల‌, బ్ర‌హ్మాజీ, సాయిచంద్‌, సునీల్, శ్యామ‌ల త‌దిత‌రుల పాత్ర‌ల‌కి మంచి ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. సునీల్ పాత్ర‌లో ప్రతినాయక ఛాయ‌లు క‌నిపించినా ఆ పాత్రని పూర్తిస్థాయిలో తీర్చిదిద్ద‌లేదు. ర‌వికృష్ణ‌, సోనియా సింగ్‌... ఇలా మ‌రికొంద‌రు పోషించిన‌వి చిన్న పాత్ర‌లే అయినా అవి సినిమాపై బల‌మైన ప్ర‌భావాన్ని చూపించాయి. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఉన్నతంగా ఉంది.  శ్యామ్ ద‌త్ కెమెరా అద్భుత‌మే చేసింది. రాత్రిళ్లు సాగే స‌న్నివేశాల్ని, రుద్ర‌వ‌నాన్ని ఆయ‌న చూపించిన విధానం చాలా బాగుంది. ప్రొడ‌క్ష‌న్ డిజైన‌ర్ శ్రీనాగేంద్ర ప‌నిత‌నం మ‌రో ఎత్తు. ఆయ‌న త‌న క‌ళా ప్ర‌తిభ‌తో రుద్ర‌వ‌నంకి ప్రాణం పోశారు. అజ‌నీష్ లోక్‌నాథ్ సంగీతం చిత్రానికి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. పాట‌ల కంటే కూడా నేప‌థ్య సంగీతంపై ఆయ‌న బ‌ల‌మైన ప్ర‌భావం చూపించారు. రాసుకున్న క‌థ‌, ఆ క‌థ‌పై అంతే ప‌ట్టుని ప్ర‌దర్శిస్తూ తెర‌పైకి తీసుకొచ్చిన విధానం ద‌ర్శ‌కుడి ప్ర‌తిభ‌కి అద్దం ప‌డుతుంది. సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. ఆరంభం నుంచి చివ‌రి వ‌ర‌కూ  క‌థ‌లో మ‌లుపులు ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తాయి. నిర్మాణం ఉన్న‌తంగా ఉంది. విజువ‌ల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్‌, ఇత‌ర సాంకేతికత విష‌యంలో రాజీ ప‌డ‌కుండా సినిమాని తీర్చిదిద్దారు. Virupaksha Review: A Formularized Thriller With A Supernatural Climax!

Virupaksha Introduction: Actor Sai Dharam Tej kind of made a comeback to films with the latest horror-thriller titled Virupaksha. The movie, written and directed by debutant Karthik Dandu hit the screens in five languages all over the world on April 21.

Ever since the film's title and first-look poster was released, expectations were high for the film. The film's trailer took them up a notch higher. Coming from Sukumar, Sai Dharam Tej, and Ajaneesh Loknath made Tollywood maniacs expect so much out of Karthik Dandu.

Samyuktha Menon, who has turned into a golden-leg for tier two Telugu films was cast as the female lead in Virupaksha.

Virupaksha Story: In a village called Rudravanam, a possessed man mysteriously goes into the sanctum of a temple and dies after puking blood in front of the deity. The village's temple priest decide to lock down the village for eight days. The protagonist, who is about to leave the village returns to give medicine to his lover, Nandini (Samyuktha) and stays back in the village due to lock down.

On the very first day of the lockdown, a woman tries to elope with her lover. In a twist, they both die at different locations. It is implied that blackmagic is enabled in the village through these deaths.

By the end of its first half, Nandini is possessed by the evil entity. What does the protagonist do? How he brings an end to this superstition/curse on the village? Who is behind these mysterious deaths?

Performances In Virupaksha:

Sai Dharam Tej, who shouldered the responsibility of the film in the role of Surya, an inquisitive person who believes in science and logic, has exhibited his best yet. This is the first release of the actor following his accident. He played the character subtly without going board, to stay true to the character.

Samyuktha on the other hand, who has been doing Telugu films continuously, has performed well in the character that she portrayed. She got hold of a tailored role for herself delivered exactly. In addition, Samyuktha also looked desirable on the screen in half-sarees and in a typical Telugu fashion.

Ajay, Sai Chand, and others have efficiently played out in their respective characters.

Virupaksha's Technical Aspects:

B Ajaneesh Loknath's background score and cinematography by Shamdat have competed in enhancing the output of Virupaksha on the big screen. The movie is better enjoyed in theatres for these reasons.

Although the director has lost grip on narration here and there, he did a commendable job for a movie of that genre, in his first attempt. Karthik Dandu is another new name in the industry to look out for. The film's editor Navin Nooli could've done even better had the love scenes and a bit of drag were avoided for the final cut. Screenplay for Virupaksha written by Sukumar B was impressive and makes a difference to the entire story.

Virupaksha Movie Review: A layered, taut thriller

Arundhati , Kodi Ramakrishna’s superb horror-fantasy drama in 2009, successfully wove the strong narrative of a chosen one rising to meet challenges prescribed by destiny, against a backdrop of religion, sorcery and the supernatural. Thirteen years since, Virupaksha offers a wholly new story borne of the thematic juxtaposition of this cinematic predecessor. 

Rudravanam, circa 1991. As villages are wont to be, this hillside hamlet is characterised by close-knit bonds and a propensity for age-old traditions. Behind this facade lies a dark crime from over a decade ago (shown in the film’s prologue) that every resident of Rudravanam is complicit in. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), a city-bred boy, enters Rudravanam with his mother to give their land for a school. Soon enough, he meets Nandini (Samyuktha) and… love happens. The romantic subplot is reminiscent of love stories from Sukumar’s oeuvre, consent be damned. Another reminder of Sukumar’s school of thought is how there is so much more written around and into an already-explored trope. For instance, think of how Nandini keeps rebuffing Surya’s advances. She is shown, in the first few scenes, as someone haughty. But before we might witness a ‘Taming of the Shrew’ situation, we get Surya propose to Nandini, rather beautifully, by saying, “ Neeku kopam osthadi ani telusu, kani nenu aa kopani jeevithanthamu bharisthanu. ” (I know you would be angry at me for proposing, but it is anger I want to endure for the rest of my life). Just as I wondered why Samyuktha was not being as histrionic as arrogant girls usually are in films, her character’s true colours come to the fore, putting doubts at rest. After last month’s Dasara , made by Sukumar’s protege Srikanth Odela, we see yet another film subvert its skeletal material delightfully.

While Karthik Dandu and Sukumar are the primary writers of the film, it is not an exaggeration to suggest that the film’s composer, Ajaneesh B Loknath, is almost its honorary screenwriter. His music, combined with sound design by Sync Cinema, take care of the narrative heavy lifting. While the film’s songs are not much to write about, the background score takes the cake. The sounds of Virupaksha are eerie, indicating tension and foreboding in all the right places, rising and ebbing like a dark dream. The heavy use of music and sound design in many a film is often an attempt to mask story deficiencies, but here, in a horror film, it is par for the course. Virupaksha tiptoes the pathways of horror without committing to its tropes wholesale. 

The film, more often than not, feels like a homage to the filmography of M Night Shyamalan, setting up its story gradually, with increasing levels of fear and ominousness while grounding it in strong psychological undercurrents. Crows, in all the metaphoric value they lend to a supernatural feature, form the glorious extras of Virupaksha , alongside the usual suspects of blackened coconuts, reddened lemons and an eclipsing moon. The film is set in the 90s, and the presence of rotary telephones and ambassador cars gives Virupaksha a cinematic sheen, a film set amidst smartphones and sedans will never quite give. The film’s dialogues are chock-a-block with dense words like Raktha Darpana, Ashta Dibbandham and Pasuthatvam . They are as effective as they are amusing. 

Virupaksha truly finds its footing in its second half, as conflicts heighten, and various threads of the narrative come together. The film’s revelations are a stream of expositions but to the credit of Karthik Dandu, interest or excitement never wanes. Sai Dharam Tej’s character, who is partly a saviour, partly an investigator, sets ahead on a journey to find answers and solve problems in the third act of the film. There are two reveals about a brother and sister duo in the film that neatly wraps the film’s questions. Beneath the gory, dramatic proceedings of Virupaksha lies a subtle but important message against the perils of groupthink and superstitions. Between the rationalism of Karthikeya or the faith-centric religious overtones of Karthikeya 2 lies Virupaksha which makes a case for the merits of black magic while simultaneously urging people to err on the path of reason.

Sai Dharam Tej and Kamal Kamaraju’s characters in the film are the proverbial fish-out-of-the-water outsiders who enter dire situations with no perspective. One wins, the other loses. In Spotlight, Stanley Tucci’s Mitch Garabedian is seen telling Mark Ruffalo’s Michael Rezendes that it is outsiders that usually possess greater perspective and skill to crack a deep-seated crime wide open. The same happens here. The protagonist’s perspective is also reflected aptly in the title of the film. While Virupaksha, another name of Shiva, is a Shaivite clapback (like Rudravanam), it also means the ‘all-seeing one’, displaying the balanced perspective of someone who is not on the Pratipaksha (in favor) or Edhurpaksha (against). Perspectives also play an important role in the cinematography of Virupaksha. We often get to see overhead shots, scenes where the camera is placed at many voyeuristic angles, which make the audience feel like they are almost eavesdropping. One of my favourite shots displays the lead actress from the point of view of a…crow. Delightful. The penultimate parts of the film is an elegant incorporation of the Trolley problem. Is it fair to kill one to save many? Or let many die but not intentionally kill one?  The casting of the film for the supporting characters is a good mix of casting for and against type. Brahmaji and Sunil ably play the roles they have portrayed in many films while Ajay’s performance as Aghora comes as a breath of fresh air. Speaking of which, it is equally refreshing to witness Rajeev Kanakala’s character stay alive in the film, from start to finish. Old wine in a new bottle is often a cause of worry and consternation for film critics, often using that phrase to actively criticise a film. Virupaksha is for the large part, old wine in a new bottle, but hey? Is wine not supposed to taste better with age?

Virupaksha Review: A pulsating thriller with great visuals and good performances

Surya(Sai Dharam Tej) and his mother visit their ancestral village of Rudravaram. There, Surya falls for Nandini(Smayuktha Menon). When things are going fine in his love story, a series of deaths shock the village. The temple head reveals to everyone that the village is haunted by an evil spirit and no one can enter or leave the village for eight days. In all this, Surya starts his own investigation and finds out that there is someone behind these mysterious deaths. The rest of the story is as to how Surya unravels the mystery and saves the entire village.

There is no denying the fact that Virupaksha is one of the most well made films in recent times. It is a film where every craft shines and gives their best to the audience. Be it the visuals, sound design, or the taking, everything is spot on. The film is co-produced by Pushpa director Sukumar and his screenplay during the first half is arresting as one gets drawn into the suspense right away.

Debut director Karthik Dandu creates a mystic atmosphere in the film as his interesting storyline only adds to the visual experience. He does not waste any time and takes you into the world of Virupaksha with his gripping visuals. The romantic track between the lead pair looks lethargic but the director cuts it short and engages the audience with a good twist.

In a way, the sound design and background score is one of the heroes of the film. Ajaneesh Lokntah's sound design and background score elevate the film to the next level and keeps the audience invested in the storyline. Virupaksha is devoid of regular commercial format but one does not get a chance to complain about such things as the narration keeps the audience hooked to their seats

There are so many spooky moments in the film which jolt you from your seats. The interval bang where Sai Dharan Tej unravels the mystery is showcased in a superb manner. What draws your attention in Virupaksha is the writing part which is very good. Debutante Karthik Dandu has made sure that his story has thrills, horror elements, and proper emotions. His story had enough twists for the audience to get invested into the storyline.

Yet another major plus point of the film are the performances. Every character etched by Karthik Dandu has a proper graph. Sai Dharam Tej sheds his mass image and is perfect in his lead role. The manner in which he showcases subtle emotions suited the film's tempo quite nicely. But the meaty part goes to Smayuktha Menon who shocks us with her performance. She, as the fun loving girl in the first half and with a solid twist in the second is the mainstay of the film. With Virupaksha, she will surely go to the next level in her career.

Noted actor, Ajay gets a good role after a long time and Brahmaji, Rajeek Kanakala, and Sunil are decent in their respective roles. Anchor Shyamala is very neat in her key role. Virupaksha also has its fair share of issues. As said earlier, the romantic drack is dragged for no reason and the key second half becomes a bit slow. The manner in which the director reveals the actual villain could have been shown in an arresting manner. To create more suspense for the audience director Karthik Varma adds many scenes in the climax which derails the drama a bit and makes the film look dragged for no reason.

When compared to the first half, the latter part has fewer thrills. If the second half would have been more racy the result would have been even better. Having said this, for the first time director Karthik Dandu has done a fabulous job. His narration and the way he immerses the audience into a different world with mystic thrills and gripping screenplay is worth an applause. The icing on the cake is the fabulous production design by Shamdat which holds your attention till the end.

On the whole, Virupaksha is a breath of fresh air amidst the plethora of commercial films that are made in Telugu cinema. The mytich thriller has a great storyline, spellbinding music score, and arresting narration. Barring a few issues with the pace, Virupaksha is a film that should be enjoyed on the big screen. Go for it.

What’s it about?

Mysterious deaths occur in the village of ‘Rudra Vanam’ as a result of an unknown person’s occult practice. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), who has come to the village on a visit from the city, decides to investigate the deaths. Meanwhile, the poojari of the village performs astadigbandhanam (the locking of the village from eight corners) to save them. According to the scriptures, no one should leave the village for a few days, and no outsiders are permitted to enter the village.

Surya, on the other hand, discovers a pattern in these mysterious deaths, and the next victim is none other than Nandini (Samyuktha Menon), the village belle with whom he falls in love.

Will Surya track down the person responsible for the deaths? Will he be able to save Nandini?

Karthik Varma Dandu, a protégé of director Sukumar, previously directed “Bham Bolenath,” which starred Navdeep and Naveen Chandra. After a long gap, he came out with his second film, “Virupaksha,” with a screenplay written by his guru Sukumar. The story and setting of Karthik Dandu stand out in the film.

The period setting and the forest village provided the director with the opportunity to create some thrilling episodes. The majority of horror films take place in a house. The story in “Virupaksha” is also confined to a single location, but this time it is a village rather than a house. Furthermore, he wrote the story in such a way that the village could be locked, limiting the drama to a single location. In many ways, it adheres to all of the genre elements of horror drama. Yet, the overall packaging of the story has given a fresh look.

This spooky thriller also benefits greatly from a compelling narration. The first act is fairly routine, but things pick up and stay on track dramatically once the second act begins. A thriller isn’t a thriller unless there’s a final twist. The surprising conclusion in “Virupaksha” is also a huge win.

As I watched the proceedings, the Netflix’s “Kingdom” series came to mind. While the series is a zombie drama, many similarities can be found between “Kingdom” and “Virupaksha”. Of course, the recent Kannada film “Vikrant Rona” is also on the similar lines. But “Virupaksha” is in its own different and quite an engaging period horror drama.

Karthik Dandu deserves praise for his captivating storytelling in the second half. His skills shine through in the main sequence of the hero’s journey to uncover the occult practitioner. This segment provides the most exciting, surprising parts of the whole setup.

On the downside, the film is also suffers from excess runtime, regular scenes and some practicable portions. But they are very few.

Sai Dharam Tej does a neat job. Even though he has recently recovered from a serious bike accident, he looks fit and apt for the role. Samyuktha Menon shines in the climactic scene. She does well in those parts. Sai Chand is convincing in his role of a poojari. Rajeev Kanakala is good.

Cinematographer Shamdat, the film’s score composer, and the set decorator all deserve a lot of credit. They’ve all put forth their best effort.

Bottom line: “Virupaksha” is a well-crafted period horror drama. The film makes an engaging watch to the most part. The setting make it stand out from the crowd of standard thrillers, despite a few problems.

Virupaksha review: Samyuktha leaves a mark as village belle in this mystical thriller

Karthik Varma Dandu's directorial debut has both its merits and shortcomings but succeeds to keep the audience engrossed.

Sai Dharam Tej’s much-awaited Virupaksha released in the theatres on Friday, 21 April, amid much fanfare. This occult-based horror thriller also features Samyuktha in a key role.

Read on to know if it impresses audiences or falls flat.

Virupaksha starts with a heart-wrenching incident that occurred in 1979.

A young couple — Krishna Murthy (Kamal Kamaraj) and his wife — are burnt alive by the villagers of Rudravanam, suspecting that they are performing black magic that was leading to a series of deaths of children in the village.

While dying, Krishna Murthy’s wife curses that the whole village will be destroyed after 12 years.

Twelve years later, in 1991, Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) along with his aunt visits Rudravanam to donate their land for a school building. He meets Nandini (Samyuktha) and love blossoms between them immediately.

But the 12-year-old curse comes true and the village witnesses mysterious deaths again. Also, a mystical spell is cast on Nandini, putting her life in danger.

How Surya unravels the reason behind the supernatural occurrences and whether he saves Nandini from the spell form the main plot of Virupaksha .

L oose ends amid i nteresting backdrop.

Director Karthik Varma Dandu chooses an interesting and challenging story for his debut. He also ensures that the narration is fast-paced with enough twists and turns.

Senior director Sukumar wrote the screenplay. But too many loose ends and unrealistic premises spoil the intensity of the story.

While the first half is gripping and entertaining, the second half veers towards unrealistic scenarios. As a result, audiences will find this occult-based movie thrilling, but only in parts.

Samyuktha puts up a good show

While Virupaksha has been publicised as a Sai Dharam Tej-starrer with him playing the lead role, it is actually Samyuktha who gets the most screen space and importance.

Samyuktha dazzles in this supernatural thriller. From a simple and cute village belle to a woman possessed by an evil spirit, she brings different hues and variations in her performance.

Sai Dharam Tej is fine as her lover.

Rajiv Kanakala, Yashoda, Sunil, and Sonia Singh play important supporting roles and are good.

Technical crafts elevate the plot

Virupaksha is an intense mystical thriller relying heavily on fine technicalities.

Cinematographer Shamdat Sainudeen does an impressive job.

Art director Sri Nagendra Tangala deserves praise for creating rustic and horror settings with equal finesse.

Visual effects are partly impressive.

Editor Navin Nooli should have trimmed the movie further.

Ajneesh Loknath’s background score is engrossing. There are just a couple of passable songs but are all part of the flow.

Virupaksha is a mystical supernatural thriller that banks heavily on occult practices. It has both its merits and shortcomings.

Virupaksha Movie Story కథ మరియు వివరణ:

80, 90వ దశకంలో జరిగిన కథ ఇది. 1979 నేపథ్యంలో ఓపెన్ అయిన మూవీ మళ్లీ 1990 కి మారుతుంది. రుద్రవరం అనే గ్రామంలో జరుగుతున్న వరుస మరణాలు ఎంతో భయానకంగా ఉంటాయి. ఈ చిత్రంలో సూర్య గా సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్, నందినిగా సంయుక్త మీనన్ కనిపిస్తారు. అయితే ఈ రుద్రవరం అనే గ్రామంలో అనుమానాస్పద మృతుల సంఖ్య రోజుకి పెరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. ఈ ఊరిలో అసలు ప్రజలు ఎందుకు చనిపోతున్నారు, ఎవరైనా చేతబడి చేస్తున్నారా..? లేక మరేవైనా ఇతర కారణాల వల్ల చనిపోతున్నారా అన్న మిస్టరీని సాయిధరమ్ తేజ్ ఛేదిస్తాడు. దీని వెనుక ఎవరు ఉన్నారు..? ఆ ఊరిని పట్టి పీడిస్తున్న శక్తి ఏంటి..? వాటిని హీరో ఎలా ఎదుర్కొన్నాడు..? అనేవి తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.

2 గంటల 25 నిమిషాల రన్ టైం తో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ థ్రిల్లర్ జానర్ మూవీ అద్భుతంగా ఉంది. సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ కి ఈ మూవీ మంచి కం బ్యాక్ అని చెప్పవచ్చు. అద్భుతమైన టేకింగ్ తో డైరెక్టర్ కార్తీక్ దండు ఈ చిత్రాన్ని చక్కగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు. ప్రారంభం నుండి చివరి వరకు సినిమా ఎంతో ఉత్కంఠ భరితంగా సాగుతోంది. రూపంలేని కన్నును విరూపాక్ష ( శివుడి మూడో కన్ను) అంటారని.. ఈ సినిమాలో రూపంలేని శక్తితో పోరాటం చేస్తారు కాబట్టి ఈ చిత్రానికి విరూపాక్ష అనే టైటిల్ ని పెట్టారు. ఇక తేజ్, సంయుక్త మీనన్ కెమిస్ట్రీ కూడా బాగా పండింది. సంయుక్త పాత్ర కూడా ఈ సినిమాకి ఓ పిల్లర్ గా నిలుస్తుంది అనడంలో ఎలాంటి సందేహం లేదు. ప్రీ క్లైమాక్స్ లో ఇరగదీసింది. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు అయితే దర్శకుడు ముందుగా చెప్పినట్లుగానే వణుకు తెప్పించే విధంగా ఉన్నాయి. మొత్తంగా ఈ చిత్రం ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా ఉంది.

Virupaksha Review - Mystery Thriller with a Mesmerizing Story Value!

Virupaksha is a psychological mystery thriller starring Sai Dharam Tej and Samyuktha Menon in the lead roles.

Sai Dharam Tej visits his village for a festival. He falls in love with Samyuktha Menon. After a point, the whole village becomes haunted and the heroine happens to be the main target. How the hero saves the day is the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction:

The arc of the lead characters, the screenplay pattern and the revenge formula are usual and much-seen-before. But what makes the film afresh is its compelling concept, how the story neatly evolves to be big in the flow and reasoning for the vengeance. Being a mystery movie that too on a horror tone, it never felt like the regular formulaic flick. There are plenty of unique elements to keep us engrossed, also nothing is overly stuffed, knots are tied and unfold fluently one by one. Yes, there are some biscuity moments here and there that fool around conveniently. The detailing is fascinating, the Astram points are crystal clear, the backstory has several layers that are revealed with twists that work well. Just the fact that conveys how powerful a human eye is even after death is such a unique selling point and sums the whole logic of the script. The flow of the first half is a bit familiar and even though the love portions make a lot of sense later on in the movie, especially in the climax, they were a tad bit long. Sukumar wins yet again with his writing that is completely justified by Karthik Varm Dandu’s gritty vision and promising directors skills.

Performances:

Sai Dharam Tej isn’t a spoilsport as a measured performance with stock expressions is enough to make it convincing and he has delivered that. But the problem relies with his screen presence, he struggles to be naturally heroic at many places, while he is running for example. On the other hand, Samyuktha Menon hits it out of the park, she is intimidating and suits the rural backdrop nicely. All round performance from her, she has given her best both in romantic and serious situations. There are some other well-written characters played fine by the artists, a mix of fresh and popular faces.

Technicalities:

The first impression the film gives is that it is technically rich, in all aspects. No-nonsense songs, just a couple of passing montages as the focus is mainly on the subject. Background score matches the happenings at the right level. Splendid camera work with apt angles along with disturbances, the props are also covered in a sufficiently captivating manner. Sharp cuts in most parts, but editing could’ve been a little crisper in the first half. Solid sound effects and mixing, helped to create goosebumps moments during the dark sequences.

మిస్ట‌రీ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ జోన‌ర్ లో...

మిగిలిన లాంగ్వేజ్‌ల‌తో పోలిస్తే తెలుగులో మిస్ట‌రీ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ జోన‌ర్‌లో సినిమాలు రావ‌డం కాస్త త‌క్కువ అనే చెప్ప‌వ‌చ్చు. అందులోనూ చేత‌బ‌డులు, క్షుద్ర‌పూజ‌లు అనే పాయింట్స్ జోలికి వెళ్లే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం యంగ్ డైరెక్ట‌ర్స్ ఎవ‌రూ చేయ‌లేదు. ఈ రేర్ పాయింట్‌ను ఎంచుకొని తొలి సినిమాతోనే ద‌ర్శ‌కుడిగా వైవిధ్య‌త‌ను చాటుకున్నాడు కార్తిక్ దండు.

ఓ ఊరిలో జ‌రిగే అనూహ్య ప‌రిణామాల‌కు స‌స్పెన్స్‌, థ్రిల్‌, హార‌ర్ ఎలిమెంట్స్‌తో పాటు ఓ రివెంజ్ డ్రామా, ల‌వ్ స్టోరీని అల్లుకుంటూ విరూపాక్ష సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించారు. మెయిన్ స్టోరీతో ముడిప‌డిన‌ ఉప‌క‌థ‌లు, స‌ర్‌ప్రైజింగ్ చేసే ట్విస్ట్‌ల‌తో చివ‌రి వ‌ర‌కు సినిమాను ఎంగేజింగ్‌గా న‌డిపించారు.

రుద్ర‌వ‌నం మిస్ట‌రీ...

1979లో ఓ జంట స‌జీవ‌ద‌హ‌నంతో విరూపాక్ష మూవీ ప్రారంభ‌మ‌వుతుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఆ ఊరిలో త‌న త‌ల్లితో క‌లిసి సూర్య అడుగుపెట్ట‌డం, నందినితో ప్రేమాయ‌ణంతో ఫ‌స్ట్ హాఫ్ ఫ‌న్‌, హార‌ర్ ఎలిమెంట్స్‌తో సాగుతుంది. . ఓ వ్య‌క్తి ర‌క్తం క‌క్కుకొని చ‌నిపోవ‌డం, ఆ మ‌ర‌ణాల‌కు సాక్షులుగా నిలిచిన వారు వ‌రుస‌గా క‌న్నుమూసిట్లుగా చూపించి ఆస‌క్తిగా క‌థ‌ను ముందుకు న‌డిపించారు.

హీరోయిన్ ప్ర‌మాదంలో ప‌డిన‌ట్లుగా చూపించి సెకండాఫ్‌పై ఇంట్రెస్ట్ క్రియేట్ చేశారు. రుద్ర‌వ‌నం మిస్ట‌రీని సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్‌తేజ్ ఛేదించే క్ర‌మంలో ఎదుర‌య్యే మ‌లుపులు స‌ర్‌ప్రైజ్ చేస్తాయి. హార‌ర్ సినిమా కాస్త చివ‌ర‌లో రివేంజ్ డ్రామాగా మారుతుంది. అస‌లు విల‌న్ ఎవ‌ర‌న్న‌ది లాస్ట్ సీన్ వ‌ర‌కు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ఊహ‌ల‌కు అంద‌కుండా న‌డిపించారు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌.

ల‌వ్ ట్రాక్ మైన‌స్‌...

ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు కార్తిక్ దండు రాసుకున్న క‌థ కొత్త‌గా ఉంది. ఈ క‌థ‌కు సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే మ్యాజిక్ తోడ‌వ‌డంతో సినిమా ఆద్యంతం థ్రిల్లింగ్‌ను పంచింది. అయితే క‌థ‌లో చిన్న చిన్న లోపాలుగా అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డ ఇబ్బందిపెట్టాయి. హీరోహీరోయిన్ల ల‌వ్‌ట్రాక్ లో ఇంట్రెస్ట్ లోపించింది. కొన్ని చోట్ల క‌థ‌ను సాగ‌దీసిన ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది.

సంయుక్త స‌ర్‌ప్రైజింగ్ రోల్‌...

విరూపాక్ష మూవీలో సూర్య‌గా సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్‌తేజ్ యాక్టింగ్ బాగుంది. గ‌తంలో ఎక్కువ‌గా ల‌వ‌ర్‌బాయ్ త‌ర‌హా పాత్ర‌ల్లో సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్‌తేజ్ క‌నిపించాడు. వాటికి భిన్నంగా సీరియ‌స్ రోల్‌లో ఇంటెన్స్ యాక్టింగ్‌తో విరూపాక్ష‌లో అద‌ర‌గొట్టాడు. సంయుక్త మీన‌న్ (Samyuktha) పాత్ర స‌ర్‌ప్రైజింగ్‌గా ఉంటుంది. ఆమె పాత్ర తాలూకు ట్విస్ట్ రివీల్ చేస్తే సినిమా చూడాల‌న్న క్యూరియాసిటీ ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో పోతుంది. త‌న న ట‌న‌తో ఆక‌ట్టుకుంది. రాజీవ్ క‌న‌కాల‌, బ్ర‌హ్మాజీ, సునీల్‌, అజ‌య్ ప్ర‌తి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌ను కొత్త‌గా డిజైన్ చేశాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌.

Virupaksha Movie Review -కొత్త అనూభూతి....

రెగ్యుల‌ర్ క‌మ‌ర్షియ‌ల్ సినిమాల‌కు అల‌వాటుప‌డిన తెలుగు ఆడియెన్స్‌కు కొత్త అనుభూతిని పంచేసినిమా ఇది. చ‌క్క‌టి మిస్ట‌రీ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ సినిమా చూసిన అనుభూతిని విరూపాక్ష మూవీ పంచుతుంది. క‌మ‌ర్షియ‌ల్‌, కామెడీ హంగుల జోలికి పోకుండా తాను అనుకున్న క‌థ‌ను ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు నిజాయితీగా స్క్రీన్‌పై ప్ర‌జెంట్ చేశాడు.

సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ (Sai Dharam Tej) కథానాయకుడిగా నటించిన తాజా సినిమా 'విరూపాక్ష' (Virupaksha Movie). ప్రమాదానికి (బైక్ యాక్సిడెంట్) గురైన తర్వాత ఆయన నటించిన చిత్రమిది. సుకుమార్ శిష్యుడు కార్తీక్ దండు దర్శకత్వం వహించిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? కమర్షియల్ సినిమాలకు భిన్నంగా సూపర్ నేచురల్ మిస్టరీ యాక్షన్ థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమా చేసిన సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ విజయం అందుకుంటారా? లేదా? 

కథ (Virupaksha movie story) : రుద్రవనంలో అమ్మవారి జాతర ఉండటంతో సూర్య (సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్) వెళతాడు. ఆ ఊరి సర్పంచ్ హరిశ్చంద్ర ప్రసాద్ (రాజీవ్ కనకాల) కుమార్తె నందిని (సంయుక్తా మీనన్)ను ప్రేమిస్తాడు. ఊరి నుంచి సూర్య వెళ్ళిపోయే సమయంలో అమ్మవారి గుడిలో ఓ వ్యక్తి మరణిస్తాడు. దాంతో ఊరికి అరిష్టం అని అష్టదిగ్బంధనం వేస్తారు. అప్పుడు ఒకరి తర్వాత మరొకరు... నలుగురు మరణిస్తారు. ఒక దశలో ఆ మరణాలను ఆపడానికి ఏకైక పరిష్కార మార్గం నందిని సజీవ దహనమే అని పూజారి చెబుతారు. అలా ఎందుకు చెప్పారు? ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయిని, ఊరిలో ప్రజలను కాపాడటం కోసం సూర్య ఏం చేశాడు? అనేది సినిమా.    

విశ్లేషణ (Virupaksha Review Telugu) : లాజిక్ ఎండ్ అయిన చోట మేజిక్ మొదలు అవుతుంది (Magic begins where logic ends) - చిత్ర పరిశ్రమ బలంగా నమ్మే సూత్రం ఇది. దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు సైతం ఓ మేజిక్ నమ్ముకున్నారు... అదే అజనీష్ లోక్ నాథ్ సంగీతాన్ని! ఆ నేపథ్య సంగీతానికి తోడు గురువు సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే & ష్యామ్ దత్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ!

'విరూపాక్ష' ప్రచార చిత్రాలు చూస్తే... ఇది ఏ తరహా చిత్రమో ప్రేక్షకులకు అర్థం కావడం పెద్ద కష్టం ఏమీ కాదు. ఇటువంటి సినిమాల్లో ప్రేమకథను ఆశించి ఎవరూ థియేటర్లకు రారు. ఆ ప్రేమ కథే సినిమాకు అడ్డంకిగా నిలిచింది. సినిమా మొదలు, చివరిలో ప్రేక్షకుడికి పంటి కింద రాయిలా తగులుతుంది. ప్రేమ కథను పక్కన పెట్టి హారర్ అంశాలకు వస్తే సినిమా అద్భుతమే!

'విరూపాక్ష' ప్రారంభమే ఆసక్తిగా మొదలైంది. ఒళ్ళు జలదరించే సన్నివేశంతో కార్తీక్ దండు సినిమాను మొదలు పెట్టారు. నేరుగా కథలోకి వెళ్ళిపోయారని సంతోషించే లోపు ప్రేమ కథను తీసుకొచ్చి కాసేపు పక్క చూపులు చూసేలా చేశారు. అయితే, అసలు కథలోకి వెళ్ళింది మొదలు పతాక సన్నివేశాల వరకు ఉత్కంఠకు గురి చేస్తూ, మధ్య మధ్యలో భయపెడుతూ ఎడ్జ్ ఆఫ్ ది సీట్ థ్రిల్ ఇచ్చారు. 

సినిమా ప్రారంభం నుంచి ప్రేక్షకుడి మదిలో సందేహాలు కలుగుతూ ఉంటాయి. ఈ క్షుద్ర పూజలకు కారణం ఎవరు? అని ఆలోచిస్తూ ఉంటారు. అసలు వ్యక్తిని చివరి వరకు రివీల్ చేయకుండా సస్పెన్స్ మైంటైన్ చేయడంలో సుకుమార్ 100 శాతం సక్సెస్ అయ్యారు (సినిమా చూడాలనుకుంటే సోషల్ మీడియాలో స్పాయిలర్స్ జోలికి అసలు వెళ్లొద్దు). ఆయన స్క్రీన్ ప్లే సూపర్బ్! దానికి తోడు అజనీష్ నేపథ్య సంగీతం, శ్యామ్ దత్ ఛాయాగ్రహణం కొన్ని చోట్ల భయపెట్టాయి. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమాలో ఉన్నత విలువలు ఉన్నాయి. 

అందరి నుంచి మంచి అవుట్ పుట్ తీసుకున్న దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు... క్లైమాక్స్ ట్విస్ట్ తర్వాత సన్నివేశాన్ని ఇంకా బాగా రాసుకుని ఉంటే థియేటర్లు దద్దరిల్లిపోయేవి. అప్పటి వరకు ఉన్న 'హై'ను ఆ సీన్ కాస్త డౌన్ చేసింది. అందులో లాజిక్ కూడా లేదు. అయితే, క్లైమాక్స్ ట్విస్ట్ మాత్రం సూపర్బ్! రెగ్యులర్ హారర్ థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమాలకు భిన్నంగా కొత్త కథను చూపించడంలో, పల్లెటూరిలో హారర్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ సెటప్ చేయడంలో దర్శకుడు సక్సెస్ అయ్యాడు. 

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : హీరోయిజం చూపించే సినిమా కాదిది. హీరో క్యారెక్టర్ కూడా కథలో భాగంగా ఉంటుంది కానీ ప్రత్యేకంగా ఏమీ ఉండదు. ఇటువంటి కథ, ఆ పాత్రలో నటించడానికి ముందుకు వచ్చిన సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ (Sai Dharam Tej)ను ప్రత్యేకంగా అభినందించాలి. పాత్రకు ఏం కావాలో, ఆయన అది చేశారు.

'భీమ్లా నాయక్', 'బింబిసార', 'సార్'తో సంయుక్తా మీనన్ వరుస విజయాలను తన ఖాతాలో వేసుకున్నారు. అయితే, ఆయా సినిమాల్లో ఆమె పాత్ర పరిధి తక్కువ. కొన్ని కీలకమైన సన్నివేశాల్లో కనిపించారు. 'విరూపాక్ష'లో అలా కాదు... చివరకు వచ్చే సరికి కథే ఆమె పాత్ర మీద నడుస్తుంది. ఆ సన్నివేశాల్లో నటిగా సంయుక్త నటన నెక్స్ట్ లెవల్. కమర్షియల్ సినిమా కథానాయిక పరిధి దాటి నటిగా ప్రూవ్ చేసుకునే అవకాశాన్ని పూర్తిగా సద్వినియోగం చేసుకున్నారు.

సాయి చంద్, సోనియా సింగ్, అజయ్‌, రవి కృష్ణ, సునీల్, యాంకర్ శ్యామల, రాజీవ్ కనకాల... ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ తమకు ఇచ్చిన పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు. దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు అందరి నుంచి మంచి నటన రాబట్టుకున్నారు.

Virupaksha, featuring Sai Dharam Tej and Samyuktha Menon in the lead roles as Surya and Nanidini is a mystical supernatural thriller that hit the theaters today. The film is directed by debutant Karthik Dandu and the story/screenplay is provided by Sukumar. Here’s our review of the film.

The story of Virupaksha happens in the late 1900s in a village named Rudravanam. A couple was lynched in the village on a black magic allegation that was taking the lives of young kids. The woman that got lynched casts a curse on the village that it will be wiped out in the “Pushkaram” time frame. After 12 yrs, the village starts to see the effects of the curse and people start committing suicide. Why are the people in the village committing suicide? How is this related to the curse? How Surya, who visits the village for jathara gets pulled into it? How he gets to the root cause of the mystery and solves the problem forms the rest of the story.

What about the onscreen performances?

Sai Dharam Tej has changed the track for the first time in his career as he has come up with a mystical action thriller, a genre he hadn’t attempted in the past. Sai does a fine job and he looked similar to his uncle Megastar Chiranjeevi in some scenes which is a plus, but he needs to lean down for the future.

Samyuktha Menon as Nandini is a surprise factor in this movie. She emoted really well throughout the movie. Her performance and looks in the movie should bring more offers and accolades. Rest of the main cast – Sunil, Rajeev kanakala, Ajay, Bhramaji, Sai Chand did their part well.

What About Off Screen Talents?

The director Karthik picks a challenging script for his maiden film and executed it in a convincing manner. He does well at combining the script with good technical finesse. He extracts the best from his cast and crew. Sumukar’s story and screenplay worked in favor of the film by keeping the tempo and not letting down the curiosity factor of the audience with some good twists in the second half.

The cinematography, Visual Effects, and Production values are good. The background music is worth mentioning and it really helped the movie at numerous occasions to elevate the mood of this mystery thriller.

Virupaksha on the whole is an engaging mystery thriller that works for the most part. The first half of the movie is ok building up the curiosity factor (although it is a bit slow at times) and the second half sustains the inquisitiveness with good twists in the story towards the end. For someone who likes supernatural mystery thrillers can easily watch the movie once. Sukumar’s story and Screenplay definitely add to the merits of the movie.

‘Virupaksha’ Review: A gripping horror thriller with a stellar performance by Sai Dharam Tej

Virupaksha is a Telugu horror film that released on April 21, 2023. The film stars Sai Dharam Tej and Samyuktha Menon in the main lead roles. The film is written by Karthik Varma Dandu and has screenplay by Sukumar. The film is produced by Mythri Movie Makers and has music by B. Ajaneesh Loknath.

The film revolves around a mysterious village called Rudravanam, where paranormal activities take place. Sai Dharam Tej plays Surya, a doctor who visits the village with his mother and falls in love with Nandini (Samyuktha Menon), the daughter of the village head. When a series of deaths occur in the village due to black magic, Surya decides to unravel the mystery behind them and save his love.

The film is a well-crafted horror thriller that engages the audience with its suspenseful plot and effective narration. The director Karthik Varma Dandu has created a convincing world of Rudravanam with the help of Srinagendra Tangala’s production design and Shamdat Sainudeen’s cinematography with a 1990s setting that adds to the authenticity and atmosphere of the story.

Samyuktha Menon also impresses with her expressions and emotions in the scenes where the evil entity possesses her.

The movie also has some notable actors like Rajiv Kanakala, Sai Chand, Brahmaji and Abhinav Gomatam in pivotal roles. They all do justice to their characters and add value to the story.

The movie has some spine-chilling moments that are enhanced by Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score, Navin Nooli’s editing and remarkable sound design. The film does not rely on cheap jump scares or gore, but rather creates fear with its subtle and smart storytelling.

The flick also has some references and homages to some classic horror films like “The Exorcist”, The “Sixth Sense” and “The Conjuring.” The film also has some twists and turns that keep the audience guessing till the end.

It does have some drawbacks, such as the predictable romance between Surya and Nandini, some cliched scenes involving the villagers and their superstitions, and some loose ends in the climax. However, these do not take away much from the overall impact of the film.

Virupaksha is a gripping horror film that invokes fear without the gimmicks. It is a must-watch for horror fans and for those who appreciate good cinema.

The storyline is rooted in 1979, when the villagers enact vengeance on Rudravanam, Venkata Chalapathy, and his wife, accusing them of sinister rituals leading to numerous deaths. The dying woman curses Rudravanam with destruction in twelve years. Bhairava, their son, is spared and placed in an orphanage. In 1991, following Siddhaiah's disappearance, Anasuyamma and her son Surya visit Rudravanam. Mysterious deaths, a temple lockdown, and Surya's investigation reveals a curse that is spreading through deaths. How it all unfolds is the rest of the drama.

Star Performance

The cinematography, editing and the background score of the film are well done bringing the film to life.

The film exhibits a mediocre performance from the cast. The background score of the movie was excellent. The cinematography and the editing of the were enthralling. The direction is decent but the cast's performance was the downside of the movie.

Malayalam film “Manjummel Boys” was released in February 2024 in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and received widespread acclaim from audience and critics. It became the first film in the Malayalam film industry to earn more than Rs 200 crore. Now, the Telugu dubbed version was released by Mythri Movie Makers.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: In 2006, a group of friends decided to visit Kodaikanal. After touring the hill station, they go to the caves that are commonly referred to as Guna Caves (due to Kamal Haasan's movie).

Inebriated, the young men boldly venture into a prohibited zone. Subash, one of the boys, tumbles into a deep hole.

According to the locals, no one has ever survived exiting that ravine. The rest of the drama is about the efforts employed by the other friends to rescue their friend, with the assistance of government officials and local people.

Artistes’ Performances: The actors' performances are superb. All of them have done a great job. For us, all these actors are unfamiliar.

Soubin Shahir and Sreenath Bhasi get more scope, other actors including Chandu Salim Kumar and Deepak Parambol have flawlessly performed their roles.

Technical Excellence: The cinematography executed by Shyju Khalid warrants particular acknowledgment. Not only did he beautifully film the picturesque landscapes of Kodaikanal, but he also skillfully captured the intense atmosphere of the caves and the aftermath of the accident.

Sushin Shyam enhances the tension even more with his exceptionally impressive background score. The unsettling music evokes a chilling sensation during pivotal moments.

These types of films are most effective when the editing and sound design are of the highest quality. The editor's work is exceptionally impressive. The crisp runtime is another additional benefit. The sound design is exceptional.

Drawback: Initial portions

Analysis "Manjummel Boys" is based on a true story that happened in Kodaikanal in Tamilnadu. This film replicates the actual events involving a group of young men from Manjummel, Kerala, who bravely saved their friend from being trapped in Guna cave in 2006. Manjummel is a village in Kerala. Hence, the title.

Director Chidambaram has added a dramatic element to this incident and presented the film in an exciting and suspenseful way. "Manjummel Boys" is not only a survival thriller, but also a film that explores the theme of friendship.

This is not a ‘story’ film. It revolves around rescuing a friend who unintentionally fell into a ravine. But director Chidambaram employs numerous screenplay techniques to captivate our attention from start to finish. His screenplay writing is excellent.

The survival sequences in director Chidambaram's film are not as exhilarating as those in the Hollywood film "127 Hours". However, Chidambaram's skillful narration succeeds in keeping us on the edge of our seats. In addition, he incorporates Kamal Haasan's "Guna" film and its song quite well into the screenplay adding a beauty to the overall theme.

The intriguing aspect of this film lies in its absence of exaggerated moments. The rescue unfolds in a natural manner, with the reactions of the people and the subsequent sequences portrayed using cinematic techniques. The technical team has provided excellent support to director Chidambaram in his writing and execution.

While some episodes may not be particularly thrilling, they still contribute to the overall appeal of the movie. An admirable aspect of the film is that the viewer never experiences a sense of being overwhelmed while observing the rescue sequences. Furthermore, there is no exaggeration or excessive theatricality present.

Overall, "Manjummel Boys" is a well-crafted survival thriller. Do not anticipate the movie to be great, but you will certainly enjoy and experience excitement while watching this narrative of friendship and survival drama.
